Ford Excursion

ford excursion

No matter what the new Ford Excursion's virtues may be--and there are many--a fair number of folks seem to have a problem seeing past the sheer mass of this thing. Some of these same folks raised an almighty furor when Ford's new imperial-size utility vehicle--now the absolute monarch of the motorized mastodons--was unveiled earlier this year. They portrayed the Excursion as an unmitigated menace to smaller vehicles and, with fuel economy unlikely to top 18 mpg, a serious spewer of carbon dioxide--the so-called greenhouse gas--despite the Excursion's Low-Emission Vehicle status.

To be sure, there's no denying the Excursion's dimensions. At 226.7 inches by 80.0 inches by 77.4 inches (including roof rack), it's 7.2 inches longer, 3.3 inches wider, and between 5.4 and 5.8 inches taller than the current General Motors Suburban. It's also heavier, with curb weights crowding the four-ton frontier.

But let's acquire a little perspective here. The Excursion is one big bopper, for sure, but the Suburban is no wraith, and it's had the full-size-sport-utility market cornered for about 65 years. Although Ford did grab a chunk of the full-size-SUV business with the Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator, Suburban sales continued to soar, topping 150,000 last year. Ford execs couldn't see any reason to allow GM to define and dominate a steadily expanding segment.

"This has been essentially a one-vehicle segment for a long time," says Ford Division president Jim O'Connor. "That's simply unheard of in this business."

Ford's entry into the mastodon market is driven by a couple of compelling motives. First, the Expedition/Navigator program, which succeeded beyond Ford's wildest dreams, proves that the market for king-size sport-utilities still has a considerable potential for growth. People want the big utes for heavy-duty chores, such as towing, that the smaller ones can't handle, or can't handle as well. The Expedition's upper towing limit, for example, is 8300 pounds; a suitably equipped Excursion can drag a trailer weighing up to 10,000. The same goes for the Suburban.

Second, there's money to be made on big expensive SUVs based on large-volume pickups. Financial analysts calculate that every Navigator nets almost $15,000 for FoMoCo. It's not unreasonable to assume that each Excursion will contribute almost as much cash to the corporate bottom line. You don't make that kind of money on Escorts, folks. Or on Explorers.

There are a couple other ironies relative to the initial Excursion backlash. Although it's heftier, the Excursion's dimensions are about the same as those of the largest Ford Econoline van, a vehicle type that has thus far failed to provoke righteous indignation among the self-appointed environmental ombudsmen. For that matter, there are Ford full-size pickups that are a root and a half longer than the Excursion. Where were these people when the civilian edition of the AM General Hummer came along? Of course, the Sierra Club doesn't go after companies that sell only a handful of $70,000-to-$85,000 vehicles.

Speaking of safety, one of the major concerns of the anti-ute hysteria is what happens when a giant SUV, with its high ground clearance, smites an ordinary passenger car. We think Ford has a pretty good answer in the Excursion's patented BlockerBeam system, a tubular steel fixture mounted below and behind the front bumper. If or when hard contact occurs, the beam is designed to prevent the Excursion from riding up and over a smaller vehicle. In the rear, a modified Class IV trailer hitch serves the same function.

The Excursion can ingest up to 165 cubic feet of car go with its center seats folded forward and its rearmost seat removed. Thanks to a pair of rollers, one person can manage the removal task, although it entails crawling inside to lift the base free of the latches. There's room for those ubiquitous four-by-eight-foot sheets of building material on the almost-flat floor, despite the inside spare-tire stowage (which helped to make space for the 44-gallon fuel tank).

It's a Beast From the Past

The Excursion is simply enormous. It's ridiculously large; however, it's unsurpassed for cargo and hauling capacity. The handling is clumsy but you expect that from such a large vehicle. The V10 Triton is smooth and bullet proof, more reliable and much less to maintain than the diesel. It's thirsty, 8 mpg around town and about 11 hwy. The Expedition, which I owned before, is more refined and much easier to drive. It's actually very impressive off road with the right tires. I love the Expo, it's nuts!

7.3 diesel excursion MPG tuning

excursion diesel mpg

  • Add to quote

Hi, I just bought a 2002 7.3 diesel Excursion with 3.73 rear end and 289,000 miles. I am looking for some advice for improving MPG and overall ride. Cold Air intake? Chip? An easy plug in dash module? Rear end swap? Rear end suspension? Anything else? I hear talk of guys getting MPG in the mid-twenties when towing on the freeway with their Excursion 7.3. So far everything is stock, it has been well maintained, and it runs great. The roof-mounted computer tells me I am getting about 15-16 MPG at 70mph. The front end and steering seem a little loose. I am looking for cheap, safe, and comfortable. I will be towing a 6500# dry wt 30' travel trailer and have a family of 7(4 lil kids).

and that 15-16 MPG at 70 MPH is unloaded, no trailer or passengers, just me.

excursion diesel mpg

The overhead display is normally off a few mpg. Ours would show 17-18 mpg and would actuly be 13 if hand calculated. I have heard claims of 18-20 mpg... more than that is not as common. This is an 8,000 lb hunk of steel, after all. We like ours... room for us and our 6 kids. Wife drives it daily. Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

Small non aggressive tread tires. It doesn't look cool but it will gain you a couple MPG. Don't trust the overhead. My overhead says I get 22 MPG but I actually am getting 15. Best I've ever got was 17 with the small bald tires that came on it. I put the tallest tires that can fit on the stock rims on there and I lost 2 or 3 MPG's right away. I improved MPG's by removing a wheel weight that was jammed in a rear break caliper. It got me thinking, with 200k on the truck, I'm betting if I put new wheel bearings in and anything else I can do to reduce rolling resistance I might pick up another 1 or 2 MPG's. Mods so far are AIS intake, 4" exhaust & power hungry chip. I drove mostly on the 100 hp tune but I drive like an old lady. I've averaged 15 MPG's all winter. A lot of that was driving with the hubs locked. A couple weeks ago I put x code springs in the front and it is like driving a new vehicle. Old stock springs are junk and you don't know how bad it is until you've replaced them.

Mid 20's on an Excursion? That would be nice! In all reality in over 600K miles on the 4 PSD's the best mileage was in the 00 X out West on flat land lots of 55 mph travel, 19.8mpg. The F250 has gotten close to 18mpg a few times but again lots of 55-60mph few stops. The dually even with an economy tune is hard pressed to achieve 14 mpg. In most cases when you chip or tune a diesel it will add 2-4 mpg on the overhead which rarely equals 2-4 mpg on paper. Most likely to get 20+mpg on a full tank it would have to look like this, 2wd Excursion, xlt base model, rear seat out, no passengers, no wind, cruise at 55mph on the interstate with no wind and no stopping. BTW, congrats on your purchase! We like our 02 X as it's now all blacked out and planning to put in a 5in Icon full suspension kit with Bilsteins (already purchased 7). As far as shocks the 00 X has adjustable Rancho 9000's while the 02 X has the Bilstiens (non lift versions). When the 02 X gets the lift will swap out the Bilsteins for the Rancho's. Within 3 months one of the Rancho's failed and it rides really rough no matter what setting it's on.

best way to add mpg....your foot, other wise other stuff MIGHT add 1-2 at a 1-2k cost, not worth the cost of return...just my :twocents:

I own two 6.0's. My Excursion would get 17 mpg on its best day ever but would average around 16(my overhead lie-o-meter doesn't work). My 04 F350 will get 18.5 mpg. The truck weighs 7800 lbs not sure about the excursion. I replaced the front calipers on my truck and it picked up 2 mpg. I also don't haul stuff around I don't need. The excursion will get worse mileage because of aerodynamics. My cousin loses 2 mpg when he puts the cap on his 04 F350 6.0l.

I just did a trip up north and towing a rx400 with a steel trailer and loaded to the max in my truck I got around 13.5 hand calculated... Coming home I got 18.25 with the trailer empty. I drove 65 and stopped just for fuel so every 650 miles I was putting in 35-36 gallons. I stopped twice going up and twice coming back... 1200 miles each way. If you can stay out of the pedal and learn to cruise they do extremely well. If you drive it like a pissed of teenager well enjoy stopping to put fuel in lol. The only thing you need to worry about is a tune with a lot of miles on the 7.3X's. I don't trust the trans. That is why I have not chipped mine yet.

Thanks a lot for the input! I'm pretty sure a TS chip is in my near future.

So my Ex on a "bone stock" setup - but with a 4in. Exhaust from the turbo on out. 12mpg in the city, normal traffic. Highway - best I could get was 15mpg. The first mod I did was the ZooDad mod to the airbox. That really shocked me. 14mpg in the city and got up to 17mpg on the highway (still on a stock tune) Current setup KC turbo's KC66 + Tony Wildman Tunes on a Ts Chip, AFE bigboost filter (ie, 6637 equivalent) Rebuilt and beefed up trans with Triple disc converter. 15mpg/avg (on the spring/summer fuel) in the city and 20mpg highway (yes, hand calculated on a road trip) and 16mpg towing 9000lbs on the highway, 14mpg towing on hills (from Arizona back up to Denver) Been keeping track of all this after each mod I do. Next mod on deck will be adding RiffRaff's FRx mod here in a couple weeks. And hopefully the hutch/harpoon mods before winter. Hope that helps.

While your doing the frx, gut the check valves in the stock fittings.

Which fittings? Was planning on getting the fuel bowl rebuilt kit from Guzzle when I do all this. You mean the fuel filter check valve?

http://riffraffdiesel.com/content/RESOURCES/High Flow Fuel CVD Fitting Instructions.pdf Here are some instructions. Riffraff sells the fittings for $36. But you can gut yours for free.

excursion diesel mpg

With 289k miles, your going to be due for injectors any day. Unless they've been changed. If they are stock, you may want to consider the PHP Hydra. Much nicer chip with E-mail capabilities for tunes. I've got plenty of each in stock.

Banjos are a waste of money. No real gains. You could always do Corey's quad feed and get rid of all the stock lines and fittings from the fuel bowl to the heads.

Agreed with sbluke there Pat. The race truck I sponsored last year was at 730hp fuel only and still had 70psi fuel pressure running down the track on factory banjos (not drilled out either)

I have a 2002 2wd Excursion with some mods and I consistently get 25-27 MPG on the highway going 70-75 MPH, however that's based on the overhead computer. I haven't really done any hand calculations so it's probably a few MPGs less. I bought it a little over a year ago bone stock and I would get 17 at the very most on the highways and 10-12 in the city. After a few months I stuck in a DP Tuner, AFE Stage II intake, 4" turbo back exhaust and gauges, my MPG significantly went up. I use the 80hp daily driver tune 98% of the time and I almost always get 25-27 MPG highway and 14-16 MPG city. The city is probably lower than it should because I've got a short commute and my engine fully heats up at around 3/4 of the drive there. I'll be making a ~750 mile road trip this weekend, mostly highways, so I'll do some hand calculations with pictures and update y'all when I get back.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Tank ride & bazooka Moscow

Only in Russia!

Ask us for availabilities

Starts at 9am

Duration: 1 day

Tour available in

Want to ride a tank? Of course you do.

Welcome to Russia, where everything and anything is possible—especially riding on a tank, shooting an AK-47 and a bazooka, all while drinking vodka.

At Put-in tours, we have put together the ultimate excursion for men (and their girlfriends). Join us in our Soviet van for an entire afternoon of all-inclusive Russian fun on the battlefield!

Start by visiting Park Patriot, the impressive Russian army exhibition center and museum. There, try your driving skills at the T-80 tank official simulator ,  before you ride on two iconic Soviet armored vehicles (BMP-1 and/or BTR-80) on an off-road training path. Along the way, hone your skills while a drill sergeant shouts commands at you. You may not understand, but impress him anyway with your grenade launching technique and AK-47 assembling speed. Or suffer the consequences.

After that, take another shot of vodka , enjoy the army field lunch provided, and move on to the next activity…

Tank & Shooting Excursion

Honey, I shot a bazooka!

Phase two brings a variety of iconic Russian war weapons to the tip of your trigger finger. Learn about and test the Makarov PM, PPSH-41, Kalashnikov AK-47, RPK, DP28 machine gun, several semi-auto or auto carbines and more… Firing off a bazooka is the grand finale, sure to leave you breathless—just before you send the photos to your mom.

To prevent you from inadvertently blowing up your best friend or transforming your girlfriend into a strainer, we only use non-lethal (but real!) ammo.

And because you’ll want to keep the good times rolling, we also offer a 10% discount on pub-crawl tickets.
