The best golf courses in Oklahoma

When thinking of Oklahoma golf, it's hard not to think of Perry Maxwell. The Oklahoma native was one of the great golf course architects of the 1920s and '30s, and was arguably the most successful designer working through the Great Depression. He designed over 30 courses in the state, including a handful with his son, Press, and five of those make this year's ranking, beginning with his landmark design at Southern Hills in Tulsa, host of numerous major championships (the 2022 PGA Championship being the latest) and occupant of the top spot in Oklahoma since we've published state rankings. His most personal course, however, is Dornick Hills, entering the list at number 13. It was Maxwell's first venture into architecture, built on family land, and the subject of numerous revisions over the years.

Below you'll find our 2023-'24 ranking of the Best Golf Courses in Oklahoma.

Setting the Pace

On Saturday, February 11th, I played in my second tournament of the 2023 season. The tournament was put on by the Fairway Golf Tour at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City. It was a pretty small field of players because its early in the year but there were still a handful of low handicap players coming to get their game sharpened up for the season.

If you read my blog about the first event I played this year, you know my takeaways were focused on the mental side of the game. I need to have an unbreakable mental strength if I am going to play at the highest level of the game. Leading into this event, I was putting forth time and effort every day to my mental game as well as the usual routines of physical practice and training. I felt confident as I was heading into this event and I could clearly visualize myself winning. As I reflect on my performance, I believe my efforts are proving to be a step in the right direction.

This was only an 18 hole tournament. Everyone paid $240 to enter and the winner would take a $1100. We played on the west course of Lincoln Park which stretches close to 7000 yards from the tournament tees as a par 71. The temperatures were cold but the sun was out and the wind was calm setting up for optimal weather conditions in early February. The course had recently received a lot of rain so even though the fairways and greens are dormant and very tight they were playing fairly soft.

I got off to a steady start making my first birdie on the third hole. After placing my tee shot in the middle of #5 fairway, I hit my approach shot fat leading to my first bogey of the round. It was a soft bogey. One that is easy to beat myself up about, but I knew I would have to deal with adversity during the round and this was the first opportunity to show how I can respond. I stepped up on the 6th tee box and striped a 3 wood into the center of the fairway. Knocking down a 9 iron from 134 yds, my approach shot landed on the green and rolled to within an inch of the hole leaving an easy tap in birdie to erase the bogey and get back to 1 under par. Smooth sailing followed as I made pars on the remaining front 9 holes.

I have always felt the back 9 on the west course was very score-able but it still demands good course management to take advantage of the birdie opportunities. As I made the turn, I felt determined and I knew my game plan was in place. I stood on the par 3 12th with a five iron in hand. 205 was the number to the front right pin. The wind was sightly hurting and left to right. I set up for a patent cut shot that would bleed towards the hole. Instead, I double crossed the swing and hit a shot starting left of the hole turning left into the far edge of the green side bunker. Clearly out of position. I now had a slight downslope lie in the bunker needing to cover a 4 foot lip and land on the green sloping away and hard left to right. The length of the shot was about 23 yards total. My mind was calm and as I stepped into the bunker, I knew it was like me to hit great shots out of green side bunkers. I do it all the time in practice. I executed the shot perfectly and poured in the putt for par which felt like a great momentum saving up and down.

I continued steady play with birdies on 13 and 15. As I was now coming down the stretch, thoughts about my score and results began floating around my head. I knew efficient play on the last few holes could post a pretty competitive number and winning was maybe within reach. But I also knew the only way to successfully close out the round was one shot at a time. How mentally strong could I be? A poor shot into the 17th would leave me on the very front of the green somewhere around 60 ft from the hole cut in the back. 3 putt.. as I watched my second putt from 5 ft subtly change direction as it went around the edge of the cup it was hard to not feel frustration. But too much emotion on the 17th green could pour over and affect performance on the 18th, so I remained unfazed.

The 18th hole is a short par 4 reaching 320 yards. There are fairway bunkers protruding from the right side at 255 yards cutting off the fairway and requiring the player to either carry them or lay up short. My game plan was the more aggressive option taking driver over the bunkers directly at the green. The hole was into the wind and I knew I would have to smash driver to reach the green but covering the bunkers shouldn’t be a problem and that would leave me with a pitch from somewhere short. I hit a great drive and came up 22 yards short of the front hole location. A pitch to 2 feet and a solid stroke gave me birdie on the last to shoot a 3 under par 68 finishing in 2nd place two shots behind the winner.

It felt good to post a red number on the scoreboard and finish in the top 2. I felt I had made progress from my performance in the first tournament to this one and its progress I will continue as the season gains momentum. I am thankful for the opportunity I had to play in this tournament, the results, and experience I gained. And of course walking away with a pay check from the day feels great and helps with the expenses of the season. God has provided exactly what I have needed and I move on from this event with peace, confidence, and determination. My game was solid but there are certainly things that can be cleaned up and improved upon after this performance. I will continue working as hard as I can and sharing my journey in this game as I chase my biggest dreams and ride the wild rollercoaster of professional golf!

I am hoping to tee it up in competition again next week but my schedule has changed a little bit as we are now going on 6 weeks that our truck has been in the shop and we have been unable to move the RV to follow the tournament schedule. Crossing our fingers we can get back on the road soon to ramp up the 2023 season! Going to be a big year.

Back to work!

Ive played on TFT, its run real well, tough fields and play good courses. It is one of the best payout mini handicap based tours in the area... the only one better that Ive found is The Long Shots Tour which pays more. Long Shots has a problem generating alot of players though along with not having really big payouts. The fairway tour has single events, 2 day majors, and 2 day super majors which payout up to 10K the fairway tour is also more wide spread, playing events in houston, austin, dallas, okc, tulsa, and even vegas!

I have had the same question in my mind about playing with The Fairway Tour, being in the houston area. I would like to get out on that tour, and it sounds like a great fun opportunity. but havent heard enough about the tour to really convince me.

(Usually between $50-$75 depending on the course, the Tournament Director usually gets a break on the rate which is nice.) 2. Do players walk or ride in carts? This is rare that players would have a caddy since laser/range finders are legal (models that give distance only).
TFT has been featured on Fox Sports Southwest too (probably on YouTube somewhere).

2024 Masters Tournament | Friday Updates

A UGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – There is a three-way tie atop a very crowded leaderboard through two rounds of the 88th Masters Tournament. Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler are all -8 entering the weekend, with 21 players within six shots of the lead.

DeChambeau, low amateur at the 2016 Masters Tournament, followed up his opening round 65 with an even-par 72 in blustery conditions with winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour.

“I’m very excited. I get an opportunity to show my skill set, and hopefully it’s good enough to do something special this weekend,” DeChambeau said. “I feel like the game is in a great spot. Mindset is in a solid place. Caddie is keeping me in check. We’re joking out there, having fun in some tough conditions.

So I feel like everything is lining up pretty well. Just got to make sure my lag putts are doing well and striking it well off the tee. That’s all that matters. If I can do those things, I think I’ll put myself in a good place.”

DeChambeau is playing with irons that were created by a 3D printer. They were just approved by the USGA last week.

“I designed them with someone from back home, and they have just got a different curvature on the face than other equipment. Most equipment is flat. These have a different curvature on the face that allows me to have my mis-hits to go a little straighter sometimes,” he said.

Playing Saturday’s final pairing with DeChambeau will be Max Homa. Homa (-6) played 23 holes on Saturday finishing his weather-delayed first round in the morning with a 67 and followed it up with a 71 later in the day.

“I have a wife that does not let me gloat, and I have friends back at the house that will just want to hear about what Tiger did today,” Homa said after playing the first two rounds grouped with Woods. “So I’m surrounded by some awesome people.

I will appreciate this opportunity and all these cool things that I got to do. Going to Butler Cabin was pretty awesome. I will probably hang out with my son, Cam, probably change a diaper or two, and wake up tomorrow and go back to work.

Yeah, it will be different tomorrow than at a TOUR event. But I don’t know if you guys have seen ‘Hoosiers,’ but the whole same size is 18 of them, and I’m just going to try to do my best.”

In the penultimate group of the day, 2022 champion Scheffler finished off a second-round 72 to join the trio at -6.

“It was extremely challenging,” Scheffler said. “The winds were up very high, and it blows from everywhere out here. I think even par this afternoon was a really good score.

Everything out there is extremely difficult when it’s this windy. So I was definitely — definitely pleased to get in there at even par.”

Five-time champion Tiger Woods (+1) also played 25 holes on Friday, finishing his weather-delayed first round in the morning before shooting 72 in the second round in the afternoon. He made history by making the cut for the 24th consecutive time.

“It means I have a chance going into the weekend,” Woods said. “I’m here. I have a chance to win the golf tournament. I don’t know if they’re all going to finish today, but I’m done. I got my two rounds in. Just need some food and some caffeine, and I’ll be good to go.

I’m tired. I’ve been out for a while, competing, grinding. It’s been a long 23 holes, a long day. But Lance and I really did some good fighting today, and we’ve got a chance.”

Augusta resident Luke List (+6) made the cut on the number after back-to-back 75s. The cut line ended up at +6 with 60 players advancing to play the weekend.

Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters for his second green jacket

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 14: Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates on the 18th green after winning the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 14, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler has been stating his claim as the No. 1 player in the world for three years. Sunday, Scheffler declared himself the dominant force of his era.

Scheffler, 27, won the Masters by four strokes over a star-studded leaderboard for his second green jacket in three years. He becomes the fourth-youngest golfer to win the Masters twice, following Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Tiger Woods. He joins Nicklaus and Woods as the only three players with two Players Championship wins and two green jackets.

For some time on a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon at Augusta National, it appeared an all-time race for the Masters championship was coming into form. The four men playing in the last two groups — Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa and Ludvig Åberg — were all tied at 6-under at one point on the front nine.

But then Scheffler, who shot a final-round 68, put his foot down, and everyone else got out of the way.

As he stood in the fairway on the ninth hole, Scheffler unfurled a shot so good it’ll have a chance to become part of Masters lore — hitting it just high of the flag stick from 89 yards away and watching it spin back to six inches. A foot away from the hole, it looked like it was rolling in for eagle, patrons leaping out of their chairs in anticipation. He “settled” for birdie and took the lead at 8-under.

Scheffler then birdied the par-4 10th, a hole he had double-bogeyed on Saturday, to get to a two-stroke lead over Homa and Åberg.

Morikawa, playing with Scheffler, was the first to drop from contention. He doubled-bogey the 9th hole, parred the 10th and then put his second shot in the water on No. 11, venting his frustration as he watched the Masters slip from his grasp with a second double bogey.

Åberg was next, also finding the water on Augusta National’s treacherous 11th hole and scoring a double bogey to drop four shots behind Scheffler.

Last was Homa, still within reach of Scheffler until his tee shot on the par-3 12th flew the green, took a nasty bounce into the greenery on the hill behind it, and forced Homa to take an unplayable lie penalty. He had a double bogey after a poor chip, and was three shots behind even after Scheffler’s bogey on No. 11, his second of the day.

From there it became clear there could only be one, Scheffler adding birdies on holes Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to keep the rest of the field hopelessly chasing. Åberg finished second (7-under) in his first Masters appearance, followed by Morikawa, Homa and Tommy Fleetwood (tied at 4-under).

How the ‘Scottie Shuffle’ is Scheffler’s unique weapon as he seeks a second Masters

fairway golf tour oklahoma

Two years ago Scottie Scheffler held a three-stroke lead the morning of the Masters and broke down in his wife Meredith’s arms, confiding in her that he did not feel ready for what was about to come. He was. He is, even though he did not have Meredith with him this week , as she stayed behind at their home in Dallas to await the birth of their first child. Scheffler had promised to withdraw from the tournament should she go into labor (she’s due later this month). It wasn’t necessary. Nothing was stopping him from this Masters win.

He now has nine PGA Tour wins with two majors, compiling a resume of excellence unmatched this decade. Those nine wins include two Masters, two Players Championships, two Arnold Palmers Invitationals, two Phoenix Opens and a WGC match play win. But maybe more telling has been Scheffler’s unprecedented consistency. He’s played 15 majors as a tour player, and he’s been top 25 in all but one. He’s been top 10 in 10 of them. The last time he finished a professional tournament outside the top 31 was in October 2022.

Scheffler’s been world No. 1 for 83 of the last 107 weeks, and his win Sunday further solidifies the belief that nobody is reaching him any time soon. The only question left for Scheffler was if he could stabilize his putting to ensure he added more majors and had a trophy room to match his special level. Now, he’s on a four-event run of winning the Players, the Arnold Palmer and the Masters as 4-to-1 favorite.

Suddenly, the question is not whether Scheffler can truly operate like golf’s biggest star. It’s if anyone can stop him.
