Freewheeling Adventures is a family-owned tour operator based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Founded by Cathy and Philip Guest, this fun-loving team offers self-guided and guided walking and biking holidays throughout Canada and Europe. Some trips can be self-drive as well. Though their primary focus is cycling and guided trips, they offer an excellent selection of self-guided hiking routes so this is the kind of company you can stick with for multiple trips.

Mid Range to Luxury

Visit website, small operator, no badge yet, review of freewheeling adventures website.

Freewheeling Adventures’ website is excellent. It’s simple in design, easy to navigate and provides all of the necessary details, including daily elevation changes, lodging details and very good FAQs. They actually provide links to places in their itineraries, like lodging, places to visit and public transit. We’ve never seen another company do this and we applaud them for doing so! Each trip includes a section with introductory information about the destination, another detail we appreciate but don’t often see from other companies.

Search filters allow you to narrow by:

  • activity (bike, hike, multi-activity, sea-kayak)
  • difficulty level
  • categories (cultural walks, family friendly, low traffic bike routes, wilderness hikes)

We couldn’t get their blog page to load and they aren’t consistently active on social media. We’d love to see photos and stories of recent trips to give us a more personal connection, but they must be doing something right because they are busy planning trips as you can see on their Growing Groups page. It’s a good sign when a company has such a loyal fan base without having to do much marketing.

Freewheeling Adventures is pricier than most of their competitors but their loyal following suggests they’re worth it. If budget is of utmost concern, consider Bootprints Hiking Tours for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland or  Randonnee Tours for western Canada. If you prefer more rugged accommodations and trekking, consider Great Canadian Trails .

Freewheeling Adventuers

Lots of interesting adventures are available, including Iceland, Israel, Czech Republic, Croatia, Japan, Canada and Mexico. Freewheeling goes to all the other, more common regions (Italy, France, Spain), but we counted at least 12 destinations that NONE of the major tour companies cover. They keep the group sizes small - usually less than 12. This is refreshing, as many other companies are letting group sizes creep up to 20.

Also, they provide self-guided tours with a nice twist. They call them privately-semi guided trips. There is still a guide with extensive local knowledge that looks over the riders. We find this refreshing, as we have had problems with other self-guided companies not being there for us when we needed help. Freewheeling wins the contest for "most website pictures of people having loads of fun". With Freewheeling Adventures, the name pretty much sums it up.

I found Freewheeling through this site, and I was thrilled with them! I had a fantastic time on this small group trip (there were only four of us plus the Freewheeling guide and the local guide). The guide was very knowledgeable in the area and quick to suggest alternate routes that we might enjoy more. The local guide knew all the back roads, and we saw things we never would have seen otherwise. The accommodations were great, and the food was incredible! I found the costs to be significantly lower than some of the big-name American companies offering the same tour, and I definitely felt I got my money’s worth. I love that it’s a small, family-owned business. They were also very helpful in connecting me with others from my group before the trip, without compromising anyone’s privacy, so that we could arrange to meet when we got there the day before the tour started. I will definitely be using this company again!

They do guided and self-guided trips, with small groups. There are some easy trips, but there are also great rides for cyclists who like some challenges. Van support on guided trips is great because the groups are so small (12 and fewer).

We’ve been on a number of self-directed and guided trips but have never had better equipment or more personal attention, first to last.

Freewheeling never ceases to amaze us in how much the past trips and dreams of future trips give us continuing pleasure. It is not only the trips, but everything you put into the whole adventure from beginning to end as exemplified by how you can touch us in the middle of winter.

My 2 adventures –to NS and Newfoundland, have been the highlights of my adult life. I yearn to return.

Traveled w/ Freewheeling to Provence. Freewheeling will never cancel a trip, no matter how few participants. We stayed at the same luxurious locations as Backroads but our trip cost much less. Groups are smaller than most other groups. I was impressed both with the quality of our guides and the quality of our accomodations and level of organization.

Freewheeling Adventures

www.freewheeling.ca/

Freewheeling was conceived in 1987, and the adventure has now grown from ten new bicycles in a garage to a wonderfully-staffed office and well-maintained bike fleets, and from six adventures in Eastern Canada to more than 90 tours around the world.

Today, your experience is enhanced both by all they have learned in 30 years, and by the technology used to plan all the details of your active holiday.

Your joy is our joy; and that is our purpose. We acknowledge that we are different from other tour planning companies.

We are based in rural Nova Scotia, and we choose to stay small. We do not “do” travel shows; we do not succumb to the financial temptation to put 16 or 30 people on a small group trip; and we work together in an atmosphere of fun and team spirit. There are only six of us year-round, working in a small office in a beautiful setting. We are friends and family; we care about the experience with which you have entrusted us; and when you join us for a week of active exploring, we encourage you to find your inner child as you drop the concerns of the workaday world. Laughter and sharing are our intentions and rewards. Please join us as soon as you have a chance. We will show you good food, quiet routes, comfy sleeps, unobtrusive service, and genuine care. The trips proposed herein are blank canvases of organization upon which, with the help of our guides, partners, and friends, you can paint rich tapestries of colourful experience. As a partnership between your exploratory desires and our experience and capabilities, your holiday can unfold in the true spirit of adventure.

Seven nights; six days of southern Italian bicycle touring on easy terrain with variable distance choices, beginning in the cave town of Matera and descending through the Itria Valley to the Adriatic coast.

This quiet and peaceful region remains seemingly untouched by mass tourism, and is an insight into ways of life that have been maintained in Southern Italy for centuries. The terrain is bicycle-friendly, and the climate is perfect for spring and autumn visits. The inns are welcoming, and the dining divine! The adventure takes you first to Matera where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Sassi – century old caves, carved from rock cliffs and lived in up until the 1950’s. From there you will ride into the lush Val d’Itria to stay among olive groves at a converted farm, then to Otranto, whose castle inspired the first Gothic novel. The last ride is along a gorgeous coast road overlooking the Adriatic Sea. As you ride your bike through this calm and mysterious region, and sample its exquisite cuisine, you will often feel as if you are traveling back in time, experiencing an Italy that is very different from the well developed and busier tourist routes found in the northern parts of the country.

Confederation Trail Bike Tour

  6   days   (Bike: 6 days)

  349   km   (~ 58 km  per day)

  Cycle paths/trails , Mostly flat

Easy bicycle touring along the traffic-free Confederation Trail, bike paths of PEI National Park, and short sections of shared-use roadways to connect them.

Prince Edward Island’s Confederation Trail follows the abandoned rail bed through fabulous pastoral landscapes. Originally constructed by a contractor who was paid by the mile, it follows an unusually circuitous route for 280km (174 miles) through many communities whose existence is mainly due to the old railroad. The cycling is relatively easy on flat and smooth, well-maintained crushed stone surfaces, and the distances are moderate. You will have many opportunities to leave the trail and explore surrounding towns and villages and will be delighted by the abundance of charming caf√©s, restaurants, and galleries along some sections of this idyllic ride.

You will bike PEI from one end to the other along The Confederation Trail, stopping to enjoy the beaches of PEI National Park before heading through rolling farmland to the picturesque East coast. The East Point lighthouse, superb dining, fabulous inns, blueberry farms, and some of the nicest long, deserted beaches you'll ever see, are the highlights of this trip. Come and discover the magic with us!

Trip history: A summer destination for generations of Atlantic Canadians, PEI’s beaches and warm waters make it a family favourite. Most FA staff are familiar with its secrets and charms. Until 1997 it could only be reached by ferry or air, which gave it an exotic, island cachet. There is now an 8-mile bridge connecting it to the mainland – good for farmers, and still of debatable merit to residents and summer visitors.

Eastern Townships Bike Tour

  7   days   (Bike: 6 days)

  388   km   (~ 65 km  per day)

  Mixed on/off-road , Hilly

Cycling through L’Estrie – Quebec’s lovely south, with nice lodging, outstanding cuisine, and pretty towns, farms, and forests.

The Eastern Townships of Québec combine the convenience of access from Montréal with the true pleasures of Québecois tradition and culture, and a largely anglophone culture. Outstanding cuisine is being discovered, and the quiet roads, charming towns and green pastures are a perfect canvas for this exquisite holiday. The flavours and luxuries will pervade your senses and lead you to a deep appreciation for the townships, known locally as L’Estrie. You will tour through the vineyard region near Dunham, and bicycle through forests and villages past stone churches toward Sutton, stopping for great bowls of caf√©-au-lait and rich croissants at fabulous bakeries along the way. At L’Abbaye St-Benoît-du-Lac, you can try the cider and cheese made by monks in their picturesque lakeshore monastery. Circumnavigating Lac Memphremagog, you will enjoy splendid views on your way to a particularly luxurious final two nights, where the dining is among the most highly rated in Canada. Be careful! Not only will this adventure treat your palate, but the local joie-de-vivre will easily rubs off on visitors, and is likely to send you to new heights of lively appreciation for all the Townships have to offer. Why this trip? Fabulous, hilly cycling easily accessible from Montreal, on bike paths and paved roads. Haskell Opera House straddles the Canada-USA border. Québécois tradition with Anglophone culture. Vineyard region near Dunham. Pedal on an aerial bikeway through the trees near Sutton. Cider and cheesemaking at L’Abbaye Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. Excellent cuisine, including sweet maple syrup, delicious ice wine, great beer, fantastic cheese, aromatic bakeries, and generally wholesome meals.

Slovenia Bike Tour

    Slovenia

  314   km   (~ 52 km  per day)

  Some hills , Quiet roads

Seven nights; seven days. A leisurely paced bicycle tour passing through Slovenia's beautiful mountain valleys, lush vineyards, and picturesque olive groves toward the progressively warmer climates of the Adriatic coast.

Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe, where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet the Pannonian Plains and the Karst Plateau, but this is a delightfully less-developed country than much of Europe. You will experience amazing contrasts during this week of relatively easy bike touring, including the pristine Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, and the Bohinj Lake countryside. This route offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains and valleys whose clear skies are popular hangouts for hang gliders. Challenging climbs are avoided using short train hops through the mountains. You too will enjoy the vitality that comes from mountain travel, clean air, and perhaps the healing waters of the Soca Springs, as you descend through the limestone labyrinth of Karst, following the same trails upon which Napoleon led his army. Wild beauty is everywhere. From the heart of the Julian Alps you will ride through old-growth forests and winegrowing hills, and eventually to where you can swim and relax on the Adriatic shore of the Mediterranean before returning to Ljubljana. Slovenia is rich in resources, naturally gorgeous, and beautifully peaceful. It is simply a pleasure to explore by bike the countryside and affluence of this country on the sunny side of the Alps, and to fathom its roots in the Habsburg Empire and the Venetian Republic. We hope you can join us for this fabulous ride, an adventure for all senses!

Iceland Fertile South Bike Tour

    Iceland

  380   km   (~ 63 km  per day)

Seven nights; eight days. A bike tour on paved and smooth gravel or lava roads in South Iceland, with options to hike, ride horses, explore Thorsmork by foot, and visit the beautiful Westman Islands. In June and July the sun never sets and hotpot soaks are nightly rituals.

Iceland is awe-inspiring. The landscape, so newly formed, refreshingly pristine, and geologically active, defies portrayal with words and pictures, although it will inspire you to try! Steam rises from hot pools on volcanic mountainsides, and glacier-fed waterfalls tumble down to the lush lands below. We have combined the best scenery with the least used roads, and the most comfortable hotels, to create a bicycle tour you'll never forget. We provide abundant vehicle support, while you ride the wide open spaces, breathing clear air warmed by the Gulf Stream, and bathing in water heated by the earth. When the road beckons in front of you, and the sun illuminates the rivers, pastures, and icecaps all around, you will be moved by the sheer magnificence of your surroundings. You may ponder, as you gaze into the Mid-Atlantic Rift, or soak in your hotpot beneath the midnight sun, the humbling power of the dynamic earth.

The cycling begins in Hverager√∞i, not far from Reykjavik. You will ride your bike around the lake of √ûingvallvatn to the ancient parliament at √ûingvellir, then to Geysir and the impressive waterfall at Gullfoss. Skirting the mountains on fairly level roads at their base, you will cross the fertile Biskupstungur (“Fields between Rivers”) to the lava fields below Mount Hekla, and riding under the M√Ωrdalsj√∂kull Glacier between Hvollsvollur and Vik before taking a ferry to the spectacular Westman Islands for a final afternoon of exploration on foot. You will rest in a charming combination of small inns, Scandinavian-style guesthouses, and comfortable hotels. You will be able to bicycle until your heart’s content.

Bring your sense of wonder and adventure!

Vienna to Budapest Danube Bike Tour

    Austria ,   Hungary &   Slovakia

  373   km   (~ 62 km  per day)

  Mostly flat

Seven nights; six days of easy cycling along the banks of the Danube River. You will experience a region rich in art and architecture influenced by the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

This route is a continuation of the cycling trail from Passau to Vienna and winds its way along the Danube between the two important European cities of Vienna and Budapest. They hold the legacies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the form of exquisite and impressive architecture. The route goes through the capital city of Slovakia – Bratislava, and the historically significant towns of Gyor and Esztergom where you can marvel at the largest cathedral in Hungary. The fascinating town of Szentendre is a highlight. Full of churches, galleries, and museums, such as the renowned Hungarian Open Air Museum, you can enjoy this town’s charm and situation on the banks of the Danube below the Pilis Mountains. This bicycle tour gives you relaxed and easy cycling all the way to Budapest on quiet roads and bike pathways, through a nice balance of vibrant centers and rustic, traditional landscapes of fields, vineyards and forests.

Amsterdam to Antwerp Bike Tour

    Belgium &   Netherlands

  8   days   (Bike: 7 days)

  493   km   (~ 70 km  per day)

Seven nights; seven days of easy and leisurely bicycle touring on paved bike routes through the heart of South Holland, Zeeland, and Flanders.

Delve into the history, culture and geography of the Netherlands and Belgium on this flat and leisurely bike ride linking Amsterdam and Antwerp, two of Europe’s most historic cities. This region appears made for the bicycle; the tulips, cheeses, dykes, canals and windmills enhance the intrinsic pleasure of cycling one of the world’s best developed bicycling networks, beside the friendly, practical, and charming Dutch populace that use the routes on a daily basis. The countryside here is a quilt of colour from spring to fall, as the crops of tulip, hyacinth, daffodil, narcissus, and crocus give way to canola, sunflowers and potatoes as the seasons progress. Cycling along the North Sea coast, you will also be amazed to see firsthand the effort and engineering ingenuity the Dutch have invested in their dyke systems. The recently finished “Delta Works” took over 30 years to complete, and are designed to protect a large part of the country against such massive flooding incidents as the numerous ones in the 13th century that left their toll on the people here and their way of life.

We recommend arriving in Amsterdam a few days early. Bikes are in amazing abundance here and beyond the multitude of sites and museums you’ll be tempted by opportunities to explore several great bike rides through the city and surrounding countryside.

Connemara Bike Tour

    Ireland

  396   km   (~ 57 km  per day)

Seven nights; seven days by bicycle on the gently rolling paved roads of Connemara. Ride your bike between small inns, a charming castle, and an elegant 130 year old fishing lodge tucked among the Twelve Bens.

The cliffs, coves, beaches, moorlands, and beautiful, quiet lanes of Western Ireland are the setting for this fabulous bicycle tour. Dramatic skies, bracken and heather-clad hills, and remarkably emerald fields create scenery beyond your imagination. This is the landscape that inspired Yeats and Joyce to their litany of legendary prose. Populated by the musical folk of Celtic descent, the pub-peppered villages create wonderfully photogenic opportunities for exploration and indulgence in rich Irish culture. This is a place where you’ll wish you lived.

Starting at the Cliffs of Moher, you will descend to the coastal village of Doolin. From there, you will ride around the ancient Burren before ferrying out to Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands, to see such highlights as the cliff top fort of Dun Aengus. Another short ferry will take you to County Galway, where you will meander along the convoluted coast and many of the wee villages which make Connemara such a stimulating, rewarding place to ride. You will spend two nights in a lodge near the shore of Lough Inagh, surrounded by inviting mountains and breathtaking stillness. An exceptionally scenic ride will take you along the Sky Road and to Westport on to Achill Island.

Brittany & Normandy Bike Tour

  7   days   (Bike: 5 days)

  359   km   (~ 72 km  per day)

  Cycle paths/trails , Quiet roads

Six nights; six days. A moderately easy bike tour on level and lightly rolling coastal roads in the north west of France, with visits to D-day beaches and the Bayeux tapestry.

Gliding along quiet, hedgerow-lined roads of Normandy and along the emerald coastline of Brittany, this memorable bicycle tour takes you into the heart of rural and beachside France, where the pulse includes fabulous French gastronomy and some very civilized notions of European holidaying.

Bicycle paths and coastal roads link the ancient fortified town of Dinan to the fairytale world heritage site of Mont St. Michel – one of the veritable marvels of the western world. You will be able to sample the shellfish and seafare in Cancale, and the farm and orchard fare in Calvados and Normandy. You will appreciate the historical significance of the area first as you visit the beaches, military sites, and cemeteries of WWII, and even more when you see the Bayeux Tapestry - a unique record of the invasion of England by William the Conqueror, including the Battle of Hastings, and events of 1066.

One of the biggest thrills is understanding how customs originating here in medieval times have survived to influence the modern western world. This is both a simply lovely and a thoroughly thought-provoking cycling holiday.

Innsbruck to Venice Bike Tour

    Austria &   Italy

  8   days   (Bike: 5 days)

  252   km   (~ 50 km  per day)

  Quiet roads

Seven nights; six days of easy riding from the Austrian Alps to the Adriatic coast, cycling on paved paths and quiet country roads. Visit historical passes, villages and monasteries.

Leave the snow capped Alps behind as you cycle towards the Italian Po plains, and the Renaissance jewel of Venice on the Adriatic. Lush green valleys, forests, vineyards and orchards will make the backdrop for your adventure, and a boat ride the length of Lake Garda is a highlight.

You will start with an exhilarating descent from the top of the Brenner Pass into the Isarco River valley. You will follow the Isarco to its confluence with the Adige on riverside roads and paths through picturesque villages, near ancient forts, and between hillsides covered in vineyards and orchards.

A relaxing boat ride will carry you the whole length of the famous Lago di Garda. A final transfer will take you to Venice, known affectionately as the Queen of the Adriatic. During the evenings, you will savor the region’s finest wines and cuisines, considered even by Italians to be the best the country has to offer, and you will rest in well appointed villas and inns. This is an easy ride through beautiful country that will appeal to active travelers who enjoy a relaxing pace, the comforts of hearty food, delicious wine, and comfortable rest.

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. An Eerie adventure: The Brewerie at Union Station celebrates half way to Halloween tours

freewheeling adventures tours

We are almost halfway to Halloween, and The Brewerie at Union Station at 123 W. 14th St. is celebrating by bringing back its Haunted History Tours.

The Haunted History Tours usually take place in October, closer to Halloween, but because of their popularity Brewerie owner Chris Sirianni wanted to add on to the annual tradition, so he added April tour dates over 10 years ago.

“So this is the spinoff of the 20-year tradition of our Halloween Haunted History Tours which sell out very quickly," Sirianni said. "So we saw that there obviously was a want and a demand for it. So something fun to do in the spring and we would mark halfway to Halloween with these tours."

The 2-hour Halfway to Halloween Tours are similar to the tours given in October, but Sirianni said he can never guarantee what you will see when walking around the building.

“Odd things go on here, and I wish I could explain that," Sirianni said. "I let all the people on the tour understand that I’m not making anything up. We don’t populate the place or decorate the place or have anything mechanical or anything hidden. It’s all natural.”

More: Erie's Splash Lagoon nominated in best US indoor water park poll. Where to cast your vote.

What the Haunted History Tours entail

The Haunted History Tours begin by explaining the history of Union Station along with what has gone on before The Brewerie came along. This includes the people who have traveled through, certain urban legends and stories that have been passed along.

"So we talk about stories that have been passed along the way," Sirianni said. "But we talk about some of the obituaries, the oddities, the mystique and all these things that we’ve been fed over the years and we’ve read about. We package everything together in a two-hour tour.”

How did these tours begin?

The Haunted Tours generated from popular demand, starting as simple brewery tours that generated interest about the building and urban legends that have been around for decades.

Visitors passing through whether for a meal or for Amtrak found interest in the eerie tales about the building.

The tours have generated interest from local paranormal activity groups, or ghost hunters, as well.

Mike Brennan from Eerie Unknown once investigated The Brewerie with his group. While investigating, Brennan wandered off near the bathroom where he suddenly heard a noise that brought him to a halt.

Brennan heard sticky footsteps coming from inside the bathroom. When he opened the door, no one was there.

Dozens of other ghost investigating groups, coming from different regions along the East Coast, have checked out The Brewerie.

"Stand alone the tours have been great," Sirianni said. "You have beer enthusiasts, you have ghost hunters, you have historical enthusiasts, you have railroad people, you have people in town, you have people from out of town. We have people that come every year on this tour because it changes just a bit every year with the more information we get and the more history we have to share. It is so revolving and so cool to see people get excited.”

Staff ghost stories

The staff at The Brewerie can even share some personal hair-raising stories of their own when you come for a meal or drink.

"One story I have is I was in early at 5 a.m. and I got a phone call, but it wasn’t a call, it was a page from my office," Sirianni said. "Only no one was in the building and no one has a key to my office. It was not only improbable but impossible that that could be happening. I even had a ghost hunter with me when it happened."

Bartender Mike Dobson recalls opening the restaurant one morning and finding a light on in the back room. He turned it off only to find quickly after it was back on. He later confirmed with his general manager that he was the only one in the building.

The legend of Clara's stairs

One urban myth shared on the tour is a story concerning a young girl by the name of Clara.

Clara was traveling with her parents at Union Station. When they were walking up the back stairwell, Clara's father was carrying the luggage and quickly turned around to check on her, not realizing she was right behind him.

More: 2 men convicted in murder of Erie woman in dispute over broken iPad. Life sentences await

The legend then states that the luggage struck Clara and knocked her down the flight of stairs which resulted in her death.

Sirianni says that they do not have any articles or obituaries tied to the death, but there are multiple stories tied to a Clara that died upstairs at the station.

Take the haunted tour and see for yourself

Tours begin on April 17 at 7:30 p.m. They will continue on April 19 at 7 and 9:30 p.m., April 25 at 7:30 p.m., and April 26 at 7 and 9:30 p.m.

You can purchase tickets on The Brewerie website, or for $20 in person at the restaurant. For more information, call 814-454-2200.
