When Jeff Beck Opened His Final Tour, With Johnny Depp

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp opened their collaborative tour with a show at The Anthem in Washington, DC on Oct. 4, 2022. The evening began with a solo set from Beck and his backing band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson). Opening with “Freeway Jam” he continued with his signature versions of “You Know You Know,” “Big Block,” and “Brush with the Blues” and from his new album with Depp, 18 , “Caroline No”. At the midway point of the set, Depp stepped out from the wings to join Beck on songs from the new album including “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” and “Isolation” before ending the night with their take on the Killing Joke song, “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

The tour, originally announced on Aug. 15, began on Sept. 23 in Texas where Beck (alone) shared the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. Beck joined ZZ Top on stage each night for their encores. Here they are performing “La Grange” on Sept. 25.

Beck and Depp headed up the east coast before continuing with several mid-west stops (including one date in Canada) before heading to the west coast.

From the original Aug. 15 tour announcement: Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.

Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said at the time. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.” The pair had previously wrapped a European tour.

One of the Oct. 4 opening night encores was a cover of “Little Wing”

The tour spanned 21 dates, ending on Nov. 12. Beck, born on June 24, 1944, was universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ year career, he earned eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with a concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Johnny Depp brought his tour with Jeff Beck at the Hackensack Meridian Health Center at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, NJ, Tuesday night, four months after a jury awarded the actor $10 million in damages following his Virginia defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Popular on Variety

The crowd rose to its feet when Beck announced that his “beautiful baby” — Depp — was about to join the stage. The actor, wearing a newsboy hat, flannel-patterned jacket, sunglasses, bandanas, chains and holding a cigarette, strolled out to the sounds of Link Wray’s “Rumble,” joining Beck in a hug as the crowd exploded in applause. Depp and Beck played off each other, backed by Nilles’ pulsating beat, as Depp swayed from side to side, grinning and acknowledging screaming fans in the crowd, holding his hand to his heart.

Depp and Beck cruised through the rest of the set, with a performance of John Lennon’s “Isolation,” an instrumental of the Beatles’ classic “A Day in the Life,” a swirling odyssey through the Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” and a fiery finale of Killing Joke’s “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

Show opener Desure used his time wisely, making an impression with an acoustic set that was well received by the audience. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Desure deftly navigated a nine-song set that featured songs from his new record, “Still Blue,” including the single, “Threads.” The stripped-down setting gave Desure’s lyrics a chance to shine, particularly on “Cinderella” and a song written for the singer’s hometown of “Los Angeles.” With a guitar and harmonica, Desure’s sound passed for a certain New Jersey singer, and the indie artist endeared himself to the New Jersey audience with a sweet version of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

Following reports they were working on new music together , Depp – who, at the time, was waiting for the verdict in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard – appeared on stage alongside Beck at a gig in Sheffield on May 29, 2021, performing covers of Lennon, Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix . The duo then appeared together for the second time at London’s Royal Albert Hall two nights later.

They announced their first collaborative album , ’18’, in June of this year. The artists then went on to release a handful of album cuts as singles – a cover of The Beach Boys ‘ ‘Caroline, No’ and one of The Velvet Underground ‘s ‘Venus in Furs’ .

A third cover single dropped back in July, with Beck and Depp reuniting for a take of ‘The Death And Resurrection Show’ the titular 2003 song by Killing Joke .

Last month, both men were accused of having allegedly stolen lyrics from a 1974 poem, Hobo , by Bruce Jackson, to feature in album cut ‘Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade’.

The poet’s son, Michael Lee Jackson, claimed the current credits on the song “do not reflect the actual authorship of those lyric” and that he was looking into possible legal options.

Spokespeople for Depp and Beck then came forward to say the duo would review the allegations brought against them. “We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song ‘Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade’ on the ’18’ album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp,” they said. “If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album.”

Playing a role in Still Blue’s sonic sweep are a number of collaborators, including Texas-based solo artist Jonathan Tyler, Midland’s Cameron Duddy, outlaw country vocalist Nikki Lane, and producer/chart-topping songwriter Joe Janiak. Together, the group spent days at a studio coaxing new sounds out of vintage gear, guitar pedals, and other electronics. The goal? To lace Desure’s organic songwriting with something truly unexpected. Still Blue is the result: an autobiographical record that mixes its old-school nostalgia with a modern emphasis on adventurous arrangements.

Jeff Beck announces mammoth list of US tour dates, including a string of shows with Ann Wilson and ZZ Top

The shows follow the release of Beck’s collaborative album with Johnny Depp, 18, and kick off in Texas on September 23

Jeff Beck 2022 US Tour dates

British guitar legend Jeff Beck has announced a 27-date US tour, beginning September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater, in Del Valle, Texas.

The first six shows will see Beck share a bill with ZZ Top and, for selected dates, former Heart vocalist Ann Wilson , on a brief jaunt across Texas, Tennessee and Alabama.

Beck will then undertake a solo run beginning October 1 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, through to November 12 at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Reportedly, the bulk of the tour’s setlist is going to focus on Beck’s recent album, 18 (a collaborative project with Johnny Depp), which has given the guitar legend his first top 10 album entry on the Billboard chart.

However, we’re told the guitarist is also promising to pay tribute to friends and influences, alongside some older material, with his interpretations of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s You Know You Know and The Beatles’ A Day in the Life , plus Brush with the Blues all set to make appearances.

Speaking of appearances, we wonder if Depp will be showing up for any of the dates.   Depp previously joined Beck onstage for a number of shows, including a gig in the UK city of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Beck’s revealed another star collaboration – a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne track Patient Number 9 , back in June.

Johnny Depp to Join Jeff Beck on Bulk of 2022 North American Tour

The post Johnny Depp to Join Jeff Beck on Bulk of 2022 North American Tour appeared first on Consequence .

Jeff Beck will be joined by Johnny Depp for the bulk of the legendary guitarist’s upcoming North American tour. The news follows the release of the pair’s joint album, 18 , which arrived on July 15th.

The dates were announced earlier this month , but Depp’s involvement wasn’t revealed at the time. The actor-musician will be joining Beck on the road beginning October 4th in Washington, D.C., and will remain on the outing through its closing date of November 12th in Reno, Nevada. Tickets are currently available via Ticketmaster .

Prior to Depp joining the tour, Beck will play a handful of late September shows supporting ZZ Top, as well as one headlining gig in Atlanta on October 1st.

Depp and Beck have already played a number of UK and European dates together this year, including a few shows while a jury was deliberating Depp’s defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Their collaborative album, 18 , features mostly cover songs and a couple of Depp originals. Among the artists who Depp and Beck cover on the LP are The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, John Lennon, and others.

On one of the Depp originals, “Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade,” the actor was accused of lifting lyrics from an old poem titled “Hobo Ben.” The record label responded by stating, “If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album.”

Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck to play NY gig as they kick off US tour

Johnny Depp will be performing on Long Island with Jeff Beck next weekend.

Beck to basics.

Actor-turned-rocker Johnny Depp joined forces with Jeff Beck as the pair kickstarted their North American tour last week before heading to New York.

The duo will take to the stage in back-to-back performances at The Paramount in Huntington, Long Island on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15. The show will feature special guest Desure.

Tickets for each show are nearly sold out with resale tickets fetching anywhere between $214 and $746 VIP Packages, according to Ticketmaster .

Only seven tickets remain at face value between the two shows. The venue holds a capacity of 1,573 people.

Beck and Depp kickstarted the 29-date tour on Sept. 23 near Austin, Texas, and will run through Nov. 12, finishing up in Reno, Nevada.

Beck and Depp performed together while Depp awaited the jury's decision during his defamation suit.

Depp, 59, has performed with Beck, 78, several times this year, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s recent UK tour.

The duo’s performance garnered a lot of attention as it took place while Depp awaited the jury decision in his bombshell defamation trial  against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The pair performed together several times earlier this year, as well as released an album dubbed “18” on July 15.

Eight-time Grammy Award winner Beck was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice; in 1992, and in 2009 while Depp dabbled in the music scene for years. He even formed the band Hollywood Vampires with Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry.

Hall of Fame musician Jeff Beck has performed with Depp several times this year.

Depp and Beck’s album was released just weeks after the actor won his highly-publicized trial against Heard.

Depp originally  sued Heard for $50 million  in 2019 claiming the actress lied about him abusing her in order to get more money in their divorce settlement. One year later, his ex-wife  countersued him for $100 million .

Ultimately, the jury ordered Heard to pay the 59-year-old actor $10 million in compensatory damages plus $350,000 in punitive damages after  deciding she defamed the actor  in the  2018 op-ed piece she wrote for The Washington Post.

But after the counter-lawsuit she filed, in which Depp was ordered to pay $2 million, and the state of Virginia’s cap on damages, Heard was left to pay $5 million — money she says she does not have.

Heard has since  asked the judge to toss the jury’s verdict  claiming that the judgment wasn’t supported by the evidence.

Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp prove an entertaining combination in concert

State Street might as well have been Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday night as a flock of Jack Sparrows, Johnny Depp lookalikes and other anxious fans piled into the Chicago Theatre where the actor joined guitar star Jeff Beck for a sold-out show to promote the duo’s collaborative new album “18.”

Depp was announced as Beck’s special guest back in September, a late add-on to the musician’s scheduled tour, now on hiatus until Nov. 1. A mere 90 minutes and 20 songs later, the night could be best described as a tale of two concerts that met at the crossroads of guitar hero adulation and celebrity worship, without much crossover in the middle.

Beck began the night on his own merits, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer hitting the stage amid a standing ovation from his fans — no doubt diehards since his Yardbirds days. Dressed in a leather vest, jeans and a pair of shades, Beck looked every part the bonafide rocker as he delivered 11 songs of pure instrumental glory (save for a talk box accompaniment on a cover of the legendary Robert Johnson’s “Me and the Devil Blues”).

Seamlessly transitioning through decades of material like “Freeway Jam,” “Loose Cannon” and “Star Cycle,” Beck’s performance was a master class in the guitar from one of music’s greatest players. Even sans vocals, he captivated the audience by speaking to them through the stringed vessel, showing its dramatic and emotive side — if not also the breadth it can accomplish, from straight-up blues to prog rock to jazz fusion.

Of course, Beck was not alone in this task, supported by a phenomenal backing band including bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson, who were ambassadors of their instruments and had the kind of musical chemistry that produces explosive results.

When it was time for Depp’s entrance at song 12, the room’s temperature shifted so fast you might have thought a weather front moved across the theater. Down went many of the classic Beck fans who took their seats and paused the hooting and hollering that had created the air of a rough-hewn blues club just moments prior. And up went a sea of celebrity gawkers lighting up the aisles with the glow of their paparazzi smartphones while screaming a chorus of “I Love You Johnny.”

Over a near 60-year career, Beck has worked alongside with the likes of Buddy Guy, Rod Stewart, Beth Hart, Ronnie Wood — the list goes on. But Depp is perhaps one of his most eclectic choices, especially in the wake of the actor’s highly publicized court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.

In fact, Depp’s first appearance with Beck was at a show in the U.K. in late May as the jury was still deliberating in his trial, to offer the first tastes of “18,” their album (made up heavily of cover material) released via Rhino in July. It’s been in the works for three years, after the two met in 2016 and found kinship in music.

The duo performed much of it during the second half of the night as Depp took on vocal duty and shifted between electric and acoustic guitars. There was a gripping take on John Lennon’s “Isolation,” a ripped rendition of The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” that showed off Depp’s lower register, and a punchy, boot-stomping offering of Killing Joke’s great track, “Death and Resurrection Show.” There was also original material, like the bittersweet “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr,” a song about the pitfalls of fame that, not surprisingly, was Depp’s most vulnerable moment.

Though the actor has played a swashbuckler, a murderous barber, an off-kilter candy man and a sweet soul with scissors for hands in films, portraying himself on a live stage is a place where he really shines. A fact some might forget: Before he was ever a Cry-Baby, Depp was a musician who dropped out of high school to pursue rock stardom.

The silver screen may have gotten in the way of that pursuit, but Depp has since found his way back in recent years with The Hollywood Vampires supergroup and now working with Beck.

Deep clearly has a staunch fan base all too ready to give him a rock ‘n’ roll resurrection — on this night begging for autographs mid-show, vying for a coveted guitar picks and waiting outside by the tour buses for a peek at the star. The kind of stuff that makes people feel “18” again.

Revisiting Jeff Beck’s Final Concert

On Nov. 12, 2022 Jeff Beck took the stage in Reno, Nev. for what would turn out to be the final concert of his illustrious career.

The performance was the guitar great’s last tour date alongside actor-turned-rocker Johnny Depp . The two men became friends in 2016, later becoming collaborators. “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity,” Beck explained , calling the Hollywood star a "kindred spirit."

In 2020, the duo released their first song together, a cover of John Lennon ’s “Isolation.” Depp later admitted that Beck helped keep him “alive and sane and happy” through his chaotic defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The 2022 tour was in support of 18 , Beck and Depp’s collaborative album made up largely of covers. Many of those tunes made it into the set list during that final performance, including the Beach Boys ’ “Caroline, No” and the Velvet Underground ’s “Venus in Furs.”

Plenty of Beck originals were also featured in the set. The night’s opening song was “Freeway Jam,” the guitarist’s famous instrumental from 1975. “Loose Cannon,” “Big Block,” “Star Cycle” and “You Never Know” were the other Beck tunes performed that night.

The lone Depp original in the set list was “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr,” a tune the actor slyly coaxed Beck to record for their album.

“I sent a very cheeky text to Jeff and said, 'Hey, don’t think that I’m asking you to play on this because I’m really not,'” Depp recalled to Hollywood Authentic . “'Don’t feel any pressure at all. I’m just sending you this song that I wrote. Of course, if you wanted to play on it, that’s fine. But I’m not saying you should , and I’m not asking you to, because I wouldn’t do that to our friendship.'”

Beck’s response? “Send me the stems, you fucker.”

By all accounts, the Reno performance was a triumphant end to the duo’s tour. More than 2,500 people turned out to watch the gig, including Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale , who raved about the show.

The final tune of the night was a rendition of Killing Joke’s “Death and Resurrection Show.” Tragically, song's title that would carry much more weight just two months later, as Beck died at the age of 78.

Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp New Album 18 – Out Today – July 15

For The 13-Track Collection, The Legendary Guitarist And Hollywood Vampires Co-Founder Record A Range Of Covers That Touch On Motown, The Beach Boys, John Lennon, The Velvet Underground, Killing Joke, And More, Along with Two Depp Original Compositions

LOS ANGELES – Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp’s highly anticipated musical collaboration, 18, is available today !  The duo’s 13-track album, dubbed 18 , is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30.

The cover features an illustration of Beck and Depp as 18-year-olds that was drawn and designed by Beck’s wife Sandra. Beck explains the album title: “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity. We would joke about how we felt 18 again, so that just became the album title too.”

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016.

“We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

The result is a wild roller coaster ride through different genres where hairpin juxtapositions deliver some of the album’s biggest thrills. A remarkable example comes early on when the industrial stomp of Killing Joke’s “Death And Resurrection Show” gives way to the intense heartache of Dennis Wilson’s “Time.” Each performance stands on its own, but the sharp contrast created by sequencing them together heightens the emotional impact of both songs.

The choice of those particular tracks, Beck says, reflects a pattern that played out across the entire album. “We suggested songs the other might not think of. It pushed both of us out of our comfort zones. Johnny got me excited about ‘Venus In Furs,’ and I persuaded him to try ‘Ooo Baby Baby.’ Interesting things happen when you’re open to trying something different.”

Beck and Depp will wrap up a European tour on July 25 in Paris, France. Then Beck will launch a U.S. Tour on September 23 in Texas where he will join ZZ Top for the first six dates before headlining additional dates through November 11. Full details of all dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

JOHNNY DEPP will join JEFF BECK on his upcoming North American tour beginning in early October and including the October 23 concert at The Chicago Theatre. In concert, the duo will highlight songs from their newly released musical collaboration, 18 , and join forces with Beck’s current band (bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson) to perform a lengthy set heavy with tunes from throughout Jeff Beck’s career.

Beck and Depp’s 13-track album, 18 , debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.  The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France - including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp returned to his musical roots over the weekend, two days after lawyers delivered closing arguments in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard .

According to multiple posts on social media and videos shared online, the actor surprised fans at a Jeff Beck concert Sunday in England. Depp hit the stage with his guitar alongside Beck at the show, which took place in Sheffield, to perform their 2020 collaboration “Isolation,” a remake of John Lennon’s 1970 song, according to reports. They also performed a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.”

Before becoming an actor, Depp had wanted to be a musician. He even testified about his early musical aspirations on the stand, noting that he wasn’t having as much success as he wanted, spurring him to turn to acting.

Depp also is part of the group Hollywood Vampires, which features Alice Cooper and Joe Perry.

Depp and Heard have been in district court in Fairfax, Virginia, since April 11, with each testifying; the case went to the jury deliberation Friday. Depp is suing Heard for $50 million in damages over an op-ed she wrote that was published in The Washington Post in 2018, while she is countersuing him for $100 million.

Event Details

Jeff Beck has never been shy about speaking his mind through his music. For more than 50 years, the Grammy-winning guitarist has expanded rock’s sonic vocabulary with an inventive style of playing that defies categorization.

With LOUD HAILER , Beck’s first new album in six years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer shifts gears once again for an album packed with topical lyrics that touch upon his concerns about the future. Loud hailer — another name for a megaphone — is the perfect symbol for the 11 tracks.

“I really wanted to make a statement about some of the nasty things I see going on in the world — greed, lies, injustice — and I loved the idea of being at a rally and using this loud device to shout my point of view.”

To help him write LOUD HAILER , Beck enlisted two young women — guitarist Carmen Vandenberg and singer Rosie Bones.  It was a chance meeting with Vandenberg last year at a birthday party for Queen drummer Roger Taylor that eventually led to the trio’s collaboration.

“She invited me to one of their shows, and I was blown away,” the guitarist recalls. “When we got together in January, I explained the subject matter I had in mind, we sat down by the fire with a crate of Prosecco and got right to it. The songs came together very quickly; five in three days.”

Beck recorded most of LOUD HAILER at home and produced it with Filippo Cimatti, who also works with Bones. In addition to the core trio, the album also features drummer Davide Sollazzi and bassist Giovanni Pallotti, who were both recruited by Cimatti.

The album’s roots, Beck explains, reach back to September 11, 2001. In particular, the plight of the “Jersey Girls,” four women who lost their husbands in the attacks and were instrumental in the creation of the 9/11 Commission.

“These women wanted answers, but were given none, which I found shocking and appalling,” the guitarist says. “I told Rosie about their fight to find the truth and she came up with ‘Ballad Of The Jersey Wives.’ That creative process repeated itself for most of the songs on the album. All credit to Rosie — she was able to bring these different ideas to life.”

Beck says he enjoyed his new role as lyrical director. “You can set the mood with an instrumental, but you can’t really tell a story. That’s not what you would expect to hear from someone who once remarked, ‘Good riddance to singers.’ But the truth is, I play better when I play off the lyrics in a song.”

A sense of outrage comes through loud and clear on the first single, “Live In The Dark,” as well as “Right Now,” which targets superficiality in pop culture. Beck adds: “I think Rosie says it all with the line, ‘Famously famous for nothing at all.’ Unfortunately, that’s where we are today.”

Anger may be the over-arching theme, but one of the album’s biggest strengths is its musical ebb and flow. Beck says: “It’s a careful balance of extremes that define the album: dark and light, heavy and tender.”

The mix ranges from the ethereal instrumental “Edna” and the country-tinged “Shrine,” to the greasy funk of “O.I.L.,” which includes a wicked slide solo played on a oil can guitar; a gift from ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. But there are also several ballads, “Shame” (inspired by 1950s doo-wop) and “Scared For The Children,” in which Beck pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix with a moving solo. The guitarist adds: “I can’t help it; Jimi is forever in my blood.”

In many ways, Beck says LOUD HAILER is his most honest album. “Lyrically, I set the mood and subject matter. And musically, I used fewer electronic gadgets than ever before. It’s mostly just me playing through a Marshall head or a Fender Champ. What you hear on the album is what you’ll hear live in concert.”

This summer, Beck will co-headline a U.S. tour with one of his heroes, the legendary Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy. The joint tour begins in July — just a few days after the album’s released — and continues for most of the summer.

On August 10, Beck will make his Hollywood Bowl debut for a very special, career-spanning concert that celebrate 50 years of ‘dynamic music making.’ “Many years ago, a girlfriend took me there as a tourist. I remember standing on that stage and thinking, ‘One day I’ll play here.’ But I never got the chance until now.”

In addition to recording LOUD HAILER , Beck also wrote, BECK01 (Genesis Publications, jeffbeckbook.com). This signed, limited edition book explores Beck’s passions for hot rods and rock ’n’ roll. Hand-bound in leather and aluminum, the book features more than 400 rare and unpublished photos. Narrated by Beck, BECK01 is the definitive visual and historical record for this dynamic musician.

The trailblazing guitarist has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice. He entered as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo artist in 2009. Beck has earned a total of eight Grammy Awards — including one for his previous album Emotion and Commotion — and has recorded with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Buddy Guy to Tina Turner and Mick Jagger. He is widely regarded by his peers and fans as one of the greatest guitarists of all time thanks to his ability to make the impossible sound effortless.

Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Max Gomez has always had the heart of an old soul. As a child, the first songs he learned to sing were originally recorded in the 50s by Johnny Cash. As a teenage guitarist he adopted Big Bill Broonzy as his blues master. And as a budding performer, he apprenticed in the rarefied musical climate of northern New Mexico, where troubadours like Michael Martin Murphey and Ray Wylie Hubbard helped foster a folk and Western sound both cosmic and cowboy. You’ll find his hometown of Taos and nearby Red River right there between Colorado and Texas on both your sonic and Google maps. Splitting his childhood between there and a farm in the Flint Hills of Kansas, Gomez is at home in the heartland, too.

Judging by the company he keeps, Gomez is positioned to emerge as a prominent voice of Americana’s next generation. Since the release of Rule the World he’s shared billing on hundreds of stages with stalwarts of the genre like Shawn Mullins, James McMurtry, Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Patty Griffin, and John Hiatt. And Jim Scott—who’s worked with Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, and Lucinda Williams—produced Gomez’s latest EP Me & Joe , which features Williams collaborator Doug Pettibone on guitar and Eric Clapton and Jackson Browne accompanist Greg Leisz on pedal steel. The soundscape is acoustic and warm, a comfort zone for Gomez’s buttery vocals.

Gomez grew up in a rich musical environment, but he represents more than the sum of his influences—he’s got that ineffable and instantly recognizable x-factor called talent. Melodies that flow naturally. Trenchant lyrics that express wise-beyond-his-years observations on the ways of the heart. Laconic phrasing in a cafe mocha timbre, and guitar skills that can stand alone. In short: the whole package.

Former pirate Johnny Depp returns to the screen as King Louis XV. But will audiences care?

It’s a long way from “Pirates of the Caribbean” to the Palace of Versailles.

But that’s the journey of Johnny Depp , who goes from playing an 18th-century pirate scoundrel to an 18th-century monarch, France’s King Louis XV, in the French-language film “Jeanne du Barry” ( in theaters Thursday ). The movie officially marks Depp's acting comeback from Hollywood limbo.

Think of "Jeanne du Barry" as a subtitled combination of “Napoleon” and “Pretty Woman," a stunningly costumed and photographed exploration of how a dynamic modern woman turns stereotypes and preconceptions upside down.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The film opened the Cannes Film Festival last May, where a tense Depp told journalists , "I don't have much further need for Hollywood."

The star will no doubt prefer the publicity surrounding his screen return to the glaring spotlight ignited by his 2022 defamation case against his ex-wife, actress and model Amber Heard. Though a civil jury ultimately awarded Depp $10 million and Heard $2 million , the trial exposed shocking claims of mutual physical and emotional abuse.

Depp, 60, started out targeting a career in rock 'n' roll, and over the decades, he has played with icons ranging from Joe Perry to Jeff Beck. But his switch to acting, turbocharged by his ‘80s TV series “21 Jump Street,” led to three best actor Oscar nominations (no wins) and an iconic role in the “Pirates" franchise.

Here's what we know about Depp’s latest star turn.

Where is 'Jeanne du Barry' streaming?

"Jeanne du Barry" is in theaters only for five days (May 2-6). The movie will stream on Apple TV+ at a later date.

Does Johnny Depp speak French in his new movie 'Jeanne du Barry'?

Yes, Depp delivers all his lines in French in this French movie with English subtitles. His accent is excellent, although his lines are kept concise – more short statements than rambling speeches – to best keep the illusion that he's a native speaker.

Why does Depp, who is from Kentucky, speak French? From 1998 to 2012, he was in a relationship with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis. The couple share two children and spent their time together shuttling between the U.S. and France.

What is Johnny Depp’s new movie 'Jeanne du Barry' about?

“Jeanne du Barry” is based on true events. The title character was a French commoner turned courtesan (a polite term for high-class prostitute) who lived from 1743 to 1793. She was eventually introduced to King Louis XV, who not only took her as a mistress but also grew deeply fond of the spirited, intelligent woman.

The relationship between the king and the courtesan gathered steam after the king’s wife died, but their love affair scandalized high society. As the French Revolution neared, upending the rule of monarchs, du Barry’s fate took an unexpected turn.

Who else is the cast of 'Jeanne du Barry'?

The true force behind “Jeanne du Barry” is Depp’s co-star, Maïwenn Aurélia Nedjma Le Besco, 48, known simply as Maïwenn. She plays du Barry, but also co-wrote and directed the film. Maïwenn, whose professional incarnations have included stand-up comedian, actress and filmmaker, has had a complex personal life.

She met French director Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element”) when she was just 12 (he was 29), married him at 16, and immediately had a daughter with him, Shanna. When she was 20 in 1996, Besson left her for his “Fifth Element” star Milla Jovovich.

Maïwenn stirred controversy when she was quoted in Britain's The Independent as saying Depp was "scary" and difficult to work with on the set. She later clarified those comments , saying she was simply referring to the actor's inherent star status.

Is Johnny Depp planning to make another ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie?

Speculation and rumors continue to swirl around whether Depp will ever return to his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, a perpetually drunk and exceedingly crafty pirate who pilots his Black Pearl while plundering treasure around the Caribbean. The movie series, based on a Disney theme park ride of the same name, ran from 2003 to 2017 and has grossed $4.5 billion worldwide.

But while another installment would provide a lucrative payday for Depp, fans should temper expectations. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer cryptically told ComicBook.com in March that “we're gonna reboot ‘Pirates.’ ” But whether Depp will be a part of such a comeback remains unclear.

During the Depp v. Heard trial, the actor was asked by Heard's lawyer Ben Rottenborn : "The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film? Correct?"

Depp's curt response: “That is true.”

This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Former pirate Johnny Depp returns to the screen as King Louis XV. But will audiences care?

Johnny Depp plays France's (real) King Louis XV, whose affair with Jeanne du Barry scandalized Paris society. "Jeanne du Barry" finds Depp, who was once partnered with French singer Vanessa Paradis, acting exclusively in French.
