With soft white sand and exquisitely clear blue water, the islands that makeup Turks and Caicos (which include Grand Turk) are known for phenomenal snorkeling and scuba diving.

Grand Turk Cruise Ports

The two-berth dock at the Grand Turk Cruise Center is the primary port for cruise ships. The Cruise Center was designed by Carnival Cruise Lines in 2006 to be a full-service destination. When you dock here, you are steps away from a gorgeous public beach, a free swimming pool, and numerous restaurants, bars, and excellent duty-free shopping.

Many passengers will enjoy their entire port day at Grand Turk within the Cruise Center.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Grand Turk Cruise Port

Upon exiting your ship, you are steps away from the beach. On the left side of the pier, the first section of blue chairs is free to use. There are plenty of palm trees, however if you plan to spend the day at the Cruise Center beach, you’ll want to get there early.

There are many shops, restaurants, and bars located within the Cruise Center boundaries, including the largest Margaritaville in the world.

The official currency in Grand Turk is the U.S. Dollar (USD).

English is the official language of Grand Turk island.

Grand Turk island is located in the Eastern Time Zone (ET).

High temperatures in the Turks and Caicos Islands hover around 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The hottest months are July, August, and September when the average high temperature is 89 degrees F and the lows are 80 degrees F.

The water temperature near Grand Turk island ranges anywhere from 3-6 degrees lower than the high temperature on land.

Getting Around Grand Turk

This small island is mostly known for white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. If you decide to leave the Cruise Center, there are a few different ways to explore this little island.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is easily walkable on foot and wheel chair accessible. If you decide to explore beyond the center, it is not recommended that you explore Grand Turk island on foot. The lack of sidewalks and spotty signage makes the island difficult (and dangerous) to walk.

Public Transit

There is no public transportation available on Grand Turk island.

Taxi cabs are one of the primary modes of transportation here. There are taxi cab stands as you exit the Cruise Center terminal.

Golf carts are an easy way and fun way to get around Grand Turk Island. Venture outside of the Cruise Center gates for the most golf cart rental options.

Electric Bikes (EBikes)

There are a few eBike rental companies right outside of the Cruise Center terminal. Because the island of Grand Turk is so small, an eBike is an ideal way to enjoy the sunshine and fresh ocean air as you see the sights.

Rentals include a bike lock, helmets, and a map for easy navigation. Just beware of wild donkeys!

Car Rentals

Many streets on the island are one-way and parking can be limited, so renting a car may not be your best option for getting around.

However, there are cars for rent, including Jeeps. Look for rental options near the taxi stands as you exit the Cruise Center.

Grand Turk is the largest of the Turks Islands that make up Turks and Caicos. The island is small, measuring only 6.9 square miles, however it has both historic and natural wonders that cruise passengers will enjoy exploring.

1. Go Shopping in the Grand Turk Cruise Center

The Cruise Center has an astounding 45,000 square feet of shopping including Diamonds International, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Tanzanite International, and Colombian Emeralds. There are also locally crafted souvenirs and gifts available to purchase as well as 10,000 square feet of duty-free shopping .

If you love to shop-until-you-drop, the Cruise Center is a convenient location with many unique offerings. All stores at the Grand Turk Cruise Center accept credit cards.

2. Relax by the Pool

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the Caribbean. There is no charge to use the swimming pool and loungers, but it is “first come-first serve” and a popular attraction for cruisers.

There are private air-conditioned pool cabanas available to rent through your cruise line. However, there are no towels provided, so be sure to bring your own from the ship.

3. Spend some time in Margaritaville

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is home to the Caribbean’s largest Jimmy Buffett ’s Margaritaville restaurant, bar, and retail shop.

Cruisers could easily spend the whole day in Margaritaville enjoying the laid-back, Caribbean vibes. Be sure to try the nachos, burgers, jerk salmon and conch fritters, and swim up to the bar for a signature Margarita.

4. Catch a Wave on the Grand Turk FlowRider

In the Cruise Center, near Margaritaville, you’ll find a self-contained water attraction called the FlowRider. High-pressure water jets shoot a thin layer of water moving over a cushioned surface creating an artificial wave perfect for surfing, bodyboarding, or kneeboarding.

You can schedule this hour-long, shared excursion through your cruise line, and don’t forget to purchase pictures of your epic wave. If you’re cruising with teenagers , this could be a fun port activity!

5. Enjoy a Catamaran Excursion

Starting from the Cruise Center, you’ll board a catamaran and set sail for a dreamy deserted beach.

6. Have an Off-Road ATV Adventure

If you’re looking for a non-water excursion on Grand Turk, you can see another side of the island on an ATV tour.

Most ATV excursions leave from right outside of the Cruise Center. You’ll be outfitted with a helmet and goggles and your own four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle.

ATV excursions last around an hour and a half. Your guide will take you past local attractions including the Ridge Trail, Grand Turk lighthouse, and the North Creek Bird watching area.

7. Try Conch Fritters at Jack’s Shack

Located about 500 yards up the beach from the Cruise Center, this restaurant is a favorite of both locals and tourists. Besides a gorgeous setting right on the beach, Jack’s Shack is famous for their conch fritters, jerk chicken and rum punch.

If you purchase something at Jack’s you can use their free wi-fi. They also have beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent if you want to relax on this beach.

8. Whale Watch at the Grand Turk Lighthouse

Built in the 1850s to help ships navigate the shallow reefs at the northern end of the island, this historic building is the only lighthouse on Grand Turk island.

The lighthouse is included in many tour itineraries. However, if you want to go on your own it is an easy 20-minute taxi ride, golf cart or bicycle ride to get there. In February and March, this is also a popular spot for whale watching.

9. Swim with Stingrays in Gibbs Cay

Gibbs Cay is a tiny, uninhabited island on the eastern side of Grand Turk. It has some of the most beautiful beaches and the best diving sites the Turks and Caicos islands have to offer.

Located a 1-mile boat ride away from Grand Turk island, the best way to visit stingrays in Gibbs Cay is through a tour. They will provide information and instructions to ensure your safety.

Many tours include additional stops to snorkel and some have a unique opportunity to dive for conch and feast on fresh conch salad. You won’t want to miss out on the stunning beaches and chance to interact with marine life at Gibbs Cay.

10. Relax at the Governor’s Beach

Most cruisers use a Grand Turk port day as a beach day, and there are plenty of picture-perfect beaches to choose from on this Island. If you want to venture from the more crowded beach at the Cruise Center, Governor’s Beach is a short distance away.

Your best option is to grab a quick taxi which should cost around $4 per person each way. Governor’s Beach is perfect for sunbathing or swimming, however, the absence of reef in this area means this isn’t the beach for snorkeling or scuba diving. There are usually vendors selling cold drinks and souvenirs here.

11. Try Power Snorkeling

If you want the magic of snorkeling with a little more speed and adventure, power snorkeling is an exciting excursion available in Grand Turk.

The power snorkel is a lightweight, underwater propulsion device that helps you to cover greater distances, get past rougher currents, and view more underwater creatures.

Power snorkel excursions depart out of the cruise center and include transportation to and from a snorkeling beach on Grand Turk, and all of the equipment you’ll need for this unique snorkeling adventure.

12. Learn About Local History at the Caicos National Museum

If you want to learn more about the intriguing history of the Turks & Caicos Islands, you might want to visit the national museum located on Grand Turk.

Located in the lovely Guinep House, built during the colonial era, the museum is small in size, yet full of fascinating exhibits. It is a great place to learn about the splashdown of John Glenn’s Mercury spacecraft to the south of Grand Turk, the Lucayan Indians indigenous to the islands, the salt trade, and the oldest shipwreck in the northern hemisphere dating back to the 1500s and located in the waters off Grand Turk.

The museum is about a 12-minute taxi ride north of the Cruise Center. Plan on about an hour and a half for your visit.

13. Enjoy solitude at Pillory beach

This idyllic beach is worth a visit if you want to get away from the cruise ship crowds. Pillory is less than a 15-minute taxi ride from the Cruise Center. There used to be a resort here (Bohio Dive Resort), that is currently being renovated.

The bottom can be rocky, so bring your water shoes .

14. Snorkel or Dive at the Grand Turk Wall

Grand Turk island is the site of the world’s third-largest coral reef structure. Located approximately 1km offshore of the west side of the island, the Grand Turk Wall offers snorkelers and scuba divers the chance to see colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, barracuda, reef and hammerhead sharks, rays, and more.

17. Peek into Prison history at Her Majesty’s Prison (H.M. Prison)

This waterfront prison complex was built in the 1830s and was operational as Grand Turk’s only prison until 1994.

Take a self-guided tour through the prison, which housed both men and women and as many as 60 prisoners. Learn about the day-to-day life of inmates as well as the mass escapes during the Great Hurricane of 1866.

18. Horseback Ride on the Beach

If you like horses, Grand Turk offers horseback tours that include an exciting ride on the beach. After a historical guided tour through Cockburn Town, you can choose to ride your horses straight into the ocean for a cooldown you’ll both enjoy.

Between January and April, Humpback whales migrate close to Grand Turk island as they move to the warm Caribbean waters to mate and give birth.

You can book a whale watching boat tour, departing near the Cruise Center, or head up to the Grand Turk Lighthouse for a chance to view these majestic creatures during migration season.

Sitting roughly 600 miles southeast of Miami and about 350 miles northwest of Puerto Rico, Grand Turk enjoys a spot that’s a world away and nestled in some of the most beautiful water on the planet.

The island itself is small — only about six miles long and two miles wide. And sitting near the southern tip is the Grand Turk Cruise Center.

This port area features everything that a cruise passenger could want to enjoy the day, from a pool to a beautiful beach to easy access to the rest of the island. And it’s all there for passengers alone to enjoy, literally in the shadow of the cruise ship in some cases.

For what to expect on visiting Grand Turk, keep reading.

Grand Turk Port Features & What to Expect

The first thing that you’ll notice when you visit the Grand Turk port is that your ship is close to the beach… as in real close. The dock sits out only about 400 feet from shore, meaning the ship towers over the port area.

Walk down the dock and you’ll enter the port area through a duty-free store. Exit the store, and you’ll enter the main plaza of the port area.

Like most cruise ports in the Caribbean, Grand Turk features a dedicated port area that’s enclosed and offers a number of amenities to cruise passengers.

In the center area surrounding the plaza are a number of shops, selling everything from t-shirts to an actual Starbucks location. If you’re wanting a souvenir to remember your trip, you’re sure to find something here.

Head to the right and you’ll pass through some shops before getting to an outdoor restaurant/bar (Beach Whale) and a more “beachy” area where you can relax. There’s also a large sculpture of a whale that makes a fun photo.

If you instead head to the left as you enter the port, you’ll wind through the buildings until you reach Margaritaville Grand Turk. This spot features the famous restaurant, but also a massive pool with thumping music in a party atmosphere. Near this spot at the back of the port is also where you’ll find the port exit to grab a taxi to explore the rest of Grand Turk.

No matter which direction you head, you’ll always be within a few steps of the beach that runs the entire length of the cruise port. Frankly, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. The sand is a soft, white powder with electric blue water. And the ship overlooks the entire area making for a one-of-a-kind scene. Just know that some areas of the water have a rockier bottom (more details in the tips section below).

Free or Cheap Things to Do in Grand Turk

To be honest, given the small size of Grand Turk there isn’t a ton of variety of things to do like you might find elsewhere. Still, there’s plenty to keep you entertained for a day in port without spending a lot of money.

Hit the Beach

Without a doubt the biggest draw at Grand Turk is the beach that sits right at the cruise ship. It’s beautiful, wide, and runs a nice distance so there is a spot for everyone and it’s free. However, its popularity can mean it gets crowded, especially close to the ship.

The area north of the pier (to the left as you enter) features a sandier bottom that’s more forgiving on your feet. The area south of the pier sees smaller crowds, but you’ll also want some water shoes if you venture out into the water. There are also rentals available for everything from snorkel gear to clamshell chairs to give you a little shade.

One other alternative? There are excursions offered to other beaches from the cruise line. You can also catch a cab to other beaches around the island, which will be less crowded.

Hit the Pool

If the beach is the biggest draw at Grand Turk, then the pool in the port area is a close second. Here, there is a massive pool that circles around, complete with loungers. It’s right next to Margaritaville, so you can sit and relax (even hangout at the swim-up bar) and get food and drinks served. There are also rentals available for things like umbrellas and cabanas.

Just know that here the atmosphere is lively with music pumping. If you’re thinking of a quiet, relaxing time by the pool, that’s not really the case.

Hit the Water

If you’re looking to get out of the port area, one of the popular things to do is to get out on the water. During our stop, there were excursions available that took passengers out on catamarans for snorkeling tours, often with drinks afterward while on the boat. This part of the world has some of the most beautiful water anywhere, so getting out and enjoying it is well worth the cost of the excursion.

Hit the Town

Want to go explore on your own? It’s easy enough to do with an inexpensive cab ride. The city on Grand Turk is called Cockburn Town and if you want a feel for the “real” Grand Turk, it’s a neat place to visit, albeit a bit spread out. A good spot to start your visit is the Turks & Caicos National Museum .

As for cab rides, the price is set based on zones. The cruise port is in Zone A, and downtown is in Zone B. The trip costs $5 per person one way. It’s only $9 per person to go the entire length of the island.

Get Your Starbucks Fill

If you just can’t live without your Starbucks, then Grand Turk is the spot for you. While many cruise ships offer Starbucks beverages on board, finding them in port is usually another story. But the port area features a full-fledged Starbucks (painted a very noticeable pink). The next closest location? That’s in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, about 200 miles away.

Take a Turn on the Flowrider

One unique feature of Royal Caribbean cruise ships is the Flowrider — a never-ending “wave” that you can surf or boogie board. At the Grand Turk port there is a land-based Flowrider that you can ride for a fee (sorry, it’s not free!). It’s right next to the pool on the north end of the port area. If you have kids or teens, it’s definitely something they’ll want to check out.

Get a Picture With John Glenn

One of the claims to fame for this area was that it was the spot where astronaut John Glenn splashed down after orbiting the earth. That’s why on the port’s southern side you’ll see an area with some information about the NASA program, a model rocket, a sculpture of the capsule splashing down, and a statue of John Glenn in his spacesuit that you can get a picture with.

Tips & Things to Know About Visiting

If you’re visiting Grand Turk, there are some tips and things to know that can make your trip even better. We mentioned some of these above, but in case you missed them, we’ve included them here as well.

Go Down in the Morning for Your Picture of the Ship

By far the most unique thing about Grand Turk is that the ship is unbelievably close to shore. It means there’s a great photo opportunity of the ship right at the beach (also docked at a perfect angle). But one suggestion is to get your photos around mid-morning. Not only will the beach crowds be thinner, but the morning sun will be shining right on the ship, making the colors pop.

The Best Beach is North of the Dock

The beach is phenomenal at Grand Turk and the biggest draw for the majority of passengers. You’ll see people up and down the shore, but if you want the best spot then we’d suggest heading north of the dock (to the left as you face the shore from the ship). This area is sandy from the beach out into the water. The bottom is rockier on the southern side of the pier.

The Beach Is Quieter to the South

While the water to the south side of the pier is rockier, the beach itself is just as nice with lots of sand. And for those wanting a little more space and not as many people, this area is ideal. Head as far down the path as you can go and you’ll find a large group of loungers (near the whale sculpture) with hardly any other people — even on busy days in port.

Taxi Rates Are Set

If you plan to head into town, then a cab is easy. There’s a taxi stand at the port exit and you’ll see the set rates explained. The island is broken into four zones (A, B, C, and D). The cruise port is in Zone A. The rate from the cruise port to the other zones is set at:

Zone A: $4 per person
Zone B: $5 per person
Zone C: $8 per person
Zone D: $9 per person

Beach Rentals Are Available

To the north side of the pier, you’ll see a stand for beach rentals. While loungers are first-come, first-served, anything else that you need can be rented. This includes snorkel gear, foam mats, clamshell loungers that offer shade, and you can also buy sunscreen and water. Need other items like a cold drink or a snack? There’s a small convenience store right next to the beach rental booth.

Grand Turk, an island in the Turks and Caicos, is a British Overseas Territory located in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean, between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.

Grand Turk is only one of many islands in the Turks and Caicos archipelago. It’s been the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands since 1766.

Grand Turk cruise port is the only one in the Turks and Caicos. The island is home to Cockburn Town, the capital city and government center of Turks and Caicos.

Grand Turk is a very small island with less than 5,000 residents. It’s common to see slow-moving donkeys and wild horses roam just about everywhere.

Where is Grand Turk? Grand Turk is only 7 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. Located at the southern end of the Turks and Caicos Islands between the Bahamas and Hispaniola Island (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), about 575 miles southeast of Miami.
What is Grand Turk famous for? The world’s best coral cliff wall dive. Possibly the first landfall for Christopher Columbus on his journey to find the New World. Plus, John Glenn held his first press conference in Grand Turk a couple of days after his space capsule splashed down offshore.
Currency: The US dollar is the official currency of the Turks & Caicos.
Language: English is the official language, but you’ll also hear Creole and Spanish.
Time Zone: Grand Turk is on Eastern Standard Time, the same as Miami or New York. Daylight Savings kicks in from March to November.
What’s the weather? Sunny and warm almost year-round. Except for the end of the hurricane season, September and October, there’s not much rain. Summer temps can quickly get into the 90s, while winter months are a balmy 80 degrees on average.
Best time to cruise to Grand Turk: Almost any season is beautiful in Grand Turk. If you’re an avid diver, it is best to avoid the late summer/fall hurricane season.
What travel documents do I need? A current US passport is the recommended document, but it is not required if your cruise begins and ends in the United States. If you are traveling without a US passport, you will need to present two official government-issued IDs.
Please check with the US Department of State for the proper travel requirements. Non-US citizens should check with their embassy for appropriate documents.
How do I get from the Grand Turk cruise port to town? Cockburn Town is located three miles from the port. You can walk there, but you won’t find any sidewalks along the way, and the weather can get scorching. The best suggestion is to take a shore excursion or hire a taxi.
Best way to get around: There is a car rental office at the Cruise Center, but driving is on the left as a British territory. Bike tours, as well as motor coach tours, are offered.
What’s suitable for kids? The Cruise Center has family-friendly kid activities, from playing on the beach to the only land-based Flow Rider ($). There aren’t any zip-lines or bungee jumps (yet!), but there is a swim with the stingrays’ tour and kayaking and for older kids.

At the Cruise Center: Visitors can use traveler’s checks and major credit cards at the Grand Turk Cruise Center.
Cash for shopping : is king when it comes to handicraft markets, so if you’re looking for locally made souvenirs in and around Cockburn Town, bring some green.
ATM machines: There is an ATM near the Cruise Center.
Credit cards: Most restaurants and stores will take credit cards and Traveler’s Checks if you’re heading into town.
Tipping: It’s polite to tip 15% at restaurants. Some restaurants add an automatic 10% service fee to the bill, so know what you’re paying. Tipping your taxi driver for good service is standard procedure.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock In Grand Turk?

There is only one place to dock on all of Grand Turk. Your cruise ship will dock at the popular Grand Turk cruise port complex, easily visible as you approach the island.

The dock is located at the southern end of Grand Turk, just to help you get your bearings.

This port is technically a pier, located south of Cockburn Town and next to a stunning beach spanning nearly 780,000 square feet. You’ll see locales and tourists sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing as you walk off the ship.

Carnival Corporation’s Grand Turk Cruise Center consists of 18 acres of shopping, beaches and endless recreational activities located right where your ship docks.

With only a few hours to spend in Grand Turk, you could easily spend a relaxing day at the enormous Grand Turk Cruise Center.

Or you can choose from a variety of shore excursions, many of which will take you on a full tour of Grand Turk.

What to Do in Grand Turk

The Cruise Center Complex is just one of the best things you can do in Grand Turk. This complex is a large open-air area with tons of excursion booths, gift shops, and restaurants.

One of the largest Margaritaville restaurants in the Caribbean is right next door, featuring a swim-up bar and free loungers for your use.

One of the main attractions at the Cruise Center Complex is an immense lagoon-like swimming pool. This pool also features a FlowRider, where people can test their surfing skills on artificial waves.

The center also has a John Glenn Splashdown memorial to commemorate his mission and landing site. A picturesque humpback whale is also nearby to celebrate the year-round sea life found at Grand Turk.

Don’t forget to hit up all of the boutique stores to shop for souvenirs and gifts for you and your loved ones. There’s a rental car service is at the center complex, but be sure to make reservations before your visit.

If you didn’t reserve your shore excursions ahead of time, there are tons of vendor booths within the complex for you to choose your tour. Planning excursions can be overwhelming, so try to research before visiting.

Visit the Grand Turk Lighthouse

If you’re going to Grand Turk for a day, you have to visit the lighthouse. This lighthouse, completed in 1852, is the only lighthouse in all Turks and Caicos Islands. Although this is no longer an active lighthouse, for only $3 per person, it’s a perfect spot for tourists and locales to spend the day and catch some sights.

The grounds around the white, french-style lighthouse are stunning. You can admire the old light-keepers house and a scenic coastal path that leads along the top of the marine limestone cliffs of the coastline. You may even see some donkeys on the grounds!

Although you cannot bike or walk to the lighthouse, you can use a rental car, taxi, or ATV. Be sure to check any island tours you’ve reserved, as the lighthouse may be part of the excursion.

Stop By the Turks and Caicos National Museum

The Turks and Caicos National Museum offers tours year-round, a perfect spot for the history buff. Located in the capital, Cockburn Town, the museum opened in 1991.

Enjoy an array of exhibits, including the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest European shipwreck excavated in the western hemisphere. You’ll also see an exhibit dedicated to the first inhabitants of Grand Turk, the Tainos. You’ll see how they lived and what they contributed to the island to make it what it is today.

See the Salt Salinas

Grand Turk was only one of three islands in the Turks and Caicos that produced salt. Turks and Caicos had one of the world’s first and largest salt industries.

Ultimately, production declined on the island; however, you can still see what used to be magnificent salt flats. Take a ride into Cockburn Town and view the dividing lines and salt ruins from the shore. You can also take an ATV trip to a more underdeveloped area called Hawkes Nest Salina. There you’ll see tons of natural white crystal sea salt.

Spend a Day at the Beach

When you get to Grand Turk, the first beach you’ll see is Cruise Center Beach, right at the pier. However, there are many other beaches where you can spend the day!

Governor’s Beach

On the west side of the island between the cruise port and Cockburn Town is Governor’s Beach. Most guests agree that this beach is the best beach on Grand Turk because of its beautiful landscape and shallow waters, perfect for swimming.

Cockburn Town Beach

This beach is home to many surrounding restaurants, hotels, and shopping. Cockburn beach spans far and sections into smaller beaches due to seawalls. Mainly, the waters are calm, but when the tide is high, you may catch some waves.

Pillory Beach

Pillory Beach is one of the quieter beaches located north of Cockburn Town. Away from the crowds at the other beaches, this is a place to come if you’re seeking solitude or somewhere quiet to read a book. If Christopher Columbus did first land at Grand Turk, this would have been the beach where he arrived.

Splash in the Water!

If you find yourself in Grand Turk for the day, take advantage of all of the water excursions available! If you’re a diver, you’ll want to go diving in Grand Turk. Plenty of charters are available.

You can rent kayaks, stand-up paddles, and boats for a day out on the water. Looking for an adrenaline rush? You can rent jet skis and go kiteboarding.

Try a Land Tour

Besides seeing the island from the water, there are plenty of tours to see the island from land. Explore the capital on a segway tour with guided audio. There are also open-air trucks available to cruise around and learn about the town.

You can also rent ATVs to explore the more underdeveloped eastern side of the island, where many roads are unpaved, including Hawkes Nest Salina. Horseback riding is also a lot of fun to do along the shore of the beautiful beaches.

Head Over to Gibbs Cay

Gibbs Cay is a small island about a mile off of Grand Turk. This island is a short trip away and accessible by jet ski or boat.

Gibbs Cay may have the best snorkeling in all of Grand Turk, unlike some shore beaches. Here you might see plenty of colorful reef fish, sea fans, corals, turtles, stingrays, and maybe even a small shark!

With snorkel and flippers, you can make your way out about 300’ to the edge of a coral reef or just wade into the water and watch for the throng of graceful stingrays as they come in for a scheduled feeding.

If a slow horseback ride along a white sandy beach is on your to-do list, Grand Turk might just be the perfect place to try it. Available as a ship’s shore excursion, it’s necessary to sign up at the beginning of your cruise to avoid a sold-out disappointment.

After a short van ride to the stable, guests are given a safety briefing before mounting their steed. First is a short ride through some scrub brush and pathways.

Then you’ll reach another stable where you’ll don a life preserver and your horse will be refitted with a water-suitable saddle. Then off you and your group will go, into the ocean.

A few minutes in one direction and the leader gives the signal for the horses to head for home. Almost in unison, the horses turn in the ocean and set their sights on a quick return trip to their home.

Hold on, because the herd really wants to get moving. It’s a wonderful experience, both in the water and on land.

Where to Dine in Grand Turk

Grand Turk has some of the best and freshest seafood you could imagine with plenty of restaurants.

Jack’s Shack is one of the most popular restaurants on the island because of its proximity to the cruise center port and its authentic Jamaican dishes.

While in Grand Turk, you need to taste all the local flavors it has to offer. The most common seafood on the island is Conch. Considered a delicacy, Conch is served both raw and cooked.

One of the most popular Conch dishes for tourists is Conch fritters. Breaded, spiced, and fried, this dish is usually paired with an equally delicious dipping sauce.

Lionfish and Snapper are also popular seafood choices on the island along with Mahi Mahi and Lobster.

The local spices of Grand Turk have a kick, so don’t be surprised if you get some heat with your dinner! Plantain chips and jerk chicken are popular selections accompanied with peas and rice.

Here are a few places to grab lunch, a cold brew and maybe stay for the entire afternoon!

It is easy to find Jacks Shack in Grand Turk. Stand on the cruise dock and look north. Thats it at then end of the beach.

Jack’s Shack has become the afternoon escape from the hub-bub and tackiness of Margaritaville at the Cruise Center. Located just a short walk from the cruise dock, Jack’s Shack is only 540 yards north of the Cruise Center.

Chef Leroy cooks up a mean jerk chicken on the grill, plus local conch dishes and fried fish. You can even print out a coupon from their website to get a free shot of locally-produced rum.

If a quieter luncheon is more your taste, hop into a taxi to the Osprey Beach Hotel and the Bird Cage Restaurant. There you’ll find poolside dining with a bird’s-eye view of the ocean. Free wifi, too.

Of course there’s good ol’ Margaritaville back at the Cruise Center. Great for those less adventurous or prefer to stay close to the cruise port.

It’s basically the same menu at all of Jimmy Buffet’s restaurants, but if you plan to go back and forth to the ship all day, it’s convenient.

INSIDER TIP:

If you plan to use WiFi at Margaritaville, you should know that it’s very slow. However, I found that fastest connection is near the router on the second level. Just bring your lunch upstairs.

Where to Shop in Grand Turk

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is a great stop when you arrive or right before you leave because it is right at your ship’s dock. Expect to see a big crowd since it’s one of the most popular areas on the island for shopping. Before you leave Grand Turk, you have to walk away with a gift or souvenir.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center will have jewelry, t-shirts, alcohol, and more. You’ll also be able to stop at the only Starbucks in all of Turks and Caicos for a one-of-a-kind Starbucks Grand Turk souvenir mug.

You can also find a lot of gifts on Front Street in Cockburn Town. There are a few permanent shops, but when tourism is at its high point, you’ll see many vendors pop up a tent to sell their handmade items.

If you’d like something very authentic to Grand Turk, try heading to the National Museum Gift Shop. Here you’ll find books, postcards, and gifts related to the island. The Grand Turk retail outlet also hosts many items from local artisans, including handmade baskets, sailboats, and more.

Shells are also a popular souvenir from the island. However, there are specific rules that tourists need to follow. For example, non-locales are only allowed to leave with no more than three conch shells. Be sure to follow the rules and protocols to help protect the natural ecosystem and island of Grand Turk.

Hi Linda, Unfortunately, the Turks and Caicos National Museum is permanently closed, due to severe hurricane damage last year. However, they are happy to report that their gift shop is open! The distance from the Cruise Center to the museum (gift shop) is about 1/2 mile. If anyone in your group likes to ride horses, I’ve done that with the ship’s shore excursion and it was a lot of fun. There are several companies that offer shore excursions and to the best of my knowledge, they all provide a fairly similar experience to that of the cruise line…many times with a smaller group. While going with the cruise line’s shore excursions does ensure a level of confidence, many if not all of the alternative shore tour companies guarantee you will get back in time for your ship’s departure. Here are a few of the shore excursion companies that I have paid for and used: Shore Excursions Group, Viator, Shore Tours. There is also CruisingExcursions.com but I have not tried them.

Sometimes, word of mouth or going online to a particular port’s page may give you ideas, too.

With your wide range of ages, families may want a more kid-oriented shore excursion while millennials may go for the adrenaline-inducing experiences. Your oldest in the group may want more overview tours aboard a motor coach. I hope this is helpful. Have a wonderful family reunion cruise! Sherry

Grand Turk is so much fun. I’d check with Cunard’s shore excursion options – it should include the horseback riding tour. While Grand Turk is up and running post-hurricanes, I don’t know 100% for sure that the stables are all repaired. I will check into it.

In Grand Turk, your ship will dock at the beach so there’s really not too much more to do than walk over to it. In Aruba, my favorite beach is Baby Beach, around the other side of the island. You might though, need to make arrangements to be picked up by the taxi or use an Uber or Lyft app if that’s possible.

Hi Gira, Lucky you! I really enjoyed Carnival Sunshine a year or so ago. Grand Turk is lovely. I’ve done horseback riding there and it was wonderful. I think 6 is the minimum age so your 8-yr old would qualify. Other things I like in Grand Turk is the history and town tour. But…the bus ride on the way to the riding stable is a mini town tour in itself so you almost get both. Try to leave a little time to wander the cruise center too or cool off in the pool at the end of the day. Margaritaville is fun…but crowded. Upstairs is less busy if you and your kids want a snack later. When you read the shore excursion reviews on Carnival’s site, be sure to check the age range for the reviewer. That’s a good clue to the demographic you’ll find on the tour. Horseback riding attracts all age groups.

Hi Sherry, We are taking a cruise with Carnival Sunshine on Aug 20th. Grand Turks is one of the ports we will be stopping at from 7am to 4pm . I have my 14 yrs old daughter and 8 yr old son with me and we are cruising for the 1st time. I would love to get your suggestions on how we can spend our time there. I like the horse back riding excursion as none of us have done that before. Would you suggest to book that through the cruise or once we get to the port? Anything else that would be great for us to try?

Hi Ana, Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary! My recommendation would be to contact the hotels on Grand Turk as inquire if any can arrange a vow renewal ceremony. Your cruise line might also be able to arrange someone on the island…but it might be more expensive. Turks and Caicos tourism has a list of event planners and maybe someone there can point you in the best direction for Grand Turk.

Hi Buffie, Good question. If you’re thinking of renting a vehicle, please note that cars drive on the left. Maybe you live in the UK so that’s not an issue. But if you’re willing, there are several car rentals companies just outside the port. Also Grand Turk has wild ponies and donkeys that can appear out of nowhere. I’ve always taken a shore excursion on Grand Turk or just hung out at the Cruise Center or walked down to Jack’s Shack. There are a lot of historical and interesting points and places on this small island that you might otherwise miss without a tour guide. Whatever you decide to do, be safe and enjoy the island. We are docking with a group. Someone had suggested renting jeeps or something and just driving around the island and exploring, any suggestions?

Hi Chelsey, Thanks for your question. If you simply want a day at the beach, it’s walkable to get there. When you dock in Grand Turk, just look to the left of the Cruise Center. There’s a huge stretch of beach (it’s in the photo in the article). Grab your gear and head on over! As far as other beaches around the island, Governor’s Beach is gorgeous but requires either a taxi, golf cart or car rental to get there. But really, if you just walk a little bit further away from the Cruise Center complex, you’ll find the crowds beach continually thin out. Only about one-third of a mile north (to the left) of the Cruise Center is Jack’s Shack, a landmark stop for drinks and nibbles. Keep walking north and the beach widens and there are less visitors. I hear the beaches are beautiful at Grand Turk. My family and I are cruising there in January. I noticed our cruise line doesn’t offer exclusive beach excursions and we really just want to spend the day at the beach. Any recommendations?

If you haven’t been snorkeling before, I wouldn’t recommend it as your first try. The water here is saltier than anywhere I’ve ever snorkeled. Take lots of water if you do try it. I was sick in about 10 minutes, and I’ve snorkeled on all the other islands with no trouble. The second time we went we did the two person kayak tour. Wasn’t a lot to see but it was a lot of fun.

Grand turk is a beautiful island not much to do on the island other than touring or goin to acouple of restaurants if theyre open would not recomend more than a 2 night stay on this island after the cruiseship leaves it becomes a ghost town

The colors of the water (at least seven layers of blue that you can count) against the green hues of the native plants and the jagged marine limestone cliffs are almost too much for my eyes to absorb. It is that beautiful!

Experience a piece of history at the Astronaut John Glenn Replica Park on the beautiful island. Walk in the footsteps of the legendary astronaut as you stand where he first set foot on dry land after his groundbreaking space mission in 1962.

I lived on Grand Turk for three months in 2009! It is my favorite place on earth. If you get to go back, you should stop by the museum. It has the oldest shipwreck in the Western hemisphere! I dream of retiring here. Glad you loved it too.

Nice pictures!! The island and the water looks beautiful, and it seems to have its own charm. I'm a big Buffett fan, so I could definitely see myself having a pina colada in Margaritaville!!!

Of the typical Caribbean cruise port stops, Grand Turk definitely offers a unique atmosphere, and is one of the best destinations for the beach and exploring on your own. Cruise ships land directly off the beach, so you can be relaxing in pristine and crystal-clear ocean water as soon as you step off the pier.

Booking your Grand Turk Cruise

The cruise center is owned and operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, which also operates the majority of cruises to Grand Turk. However, several other companies also operate routes here, including Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Costa Cruises and Crystal Cruises.

Arrival Process

It’s a breeze to land at the Grand Turk Cruise Center . You won’t have to deal with visa, immigration or customs issues. This complex has shops , restaurants , the largest Margaritaville in the Caribbean, the only Starbucks in the Turks and Caicos, and is the departure point for shore excursions.

It varies a bit according to each ship’s schedule, yet cruise ship guests unfortunately don’t have a lot of time on Grand Turk. Ships typically land mid to late morning, and depart in the afternoon. To get the most out of your visit, it makes sense to plan your day before disembarking.

Transportation

One of our top recommended ways to spend your day is to explore Grand Turk on your own. The island is easy to navigate, and it’s simple to book your transport . Car and vehicle rentals are typically picked up and dropped off right outside the entrance to the Grand Turk Cruise Center. With your own rental, you’ll be able to discover the beaches and sights at your own pace, and you’ll be able to escape the crowds too.

If you’d prefer not to drive, taxis are readily available from the cruise center.

Incredible Beaches

Exquisite beaches are a defining feature of the Turks and Caicos, and Grand Turk is no exception. Beautiful and diverse beaches surround the island.

The island’s top beach is the pristine Governor's Beach , which offers unbelievable sparkling waters and white sand. Considering the unrivaled quality of this beach, it’s surprisingly uncrowded.

The popular Cruise Center Beach fronting the cruise port doesn’t lag far behind. The ocean’s usually calm, clear and warm here, and there are complimentary beach loungers to relax on.

There’s a perfect beach for almost any activity. Cockburn Town Beach is near great restaurants and offers a historical backdrop, English Point is secluded, Pillory Beach has snorkeling , and East Side Beach and White Sands Beach are great for beachcombing .

All beaches and coasts in the Turks and Caicos up to the high tide mark are public and free-to-access. You don’t have to pay up to enjoy a non-existent “private beach”.

Many of the hotels and resorts in the Turks and Caicos maintain a fleet of non-powered water sports equipment for guest use, such as ocean kayaks , paddleboards , and windsurfers.

Snorkeling and Diving

Grand Turk is a world-renowned scuba diving destination. Abrupt and sheer wall sites, where the depths drop from around 40 feet (12 m) into the thousands, offer vibrant coral and varying marine life. You won’t waste time on long boat rides either, as many of the best dive sites are only minutes from shore.

Snorkeling is a bit of a mixed situation. There are definitely spectacular sites to be found, but most are too far off the coast to swim out to. A boat snorkeling cruise can get you to some great sights, or check out our snorkeling page for details on what can be seen from the beach.

The quantity and variety of marine life thriving at the reefs of Grand Turk is astounding. There’s colorful reef fish, lobsters, eels, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, small sharks , vibrant coral, sea fans, and sponges.

Snorkel and dive excursions can be arranged through your cruise line, or private charters can be booked directly with local tour businesses.

History and Attractions

More so than the other islands in the country, many of Grand Turk’s attractions are of historical interest. The Grand Turk Lighthouse , Turks and Caicos National Museum , and old H.M. Prison are great places to visit, and the oceanfront and historical Cockburn Town offers remnants of British-Bermudian Colonial architecture. Cockburn Town is also a great place to get some food away from the crowds at the Cruise Center. The Museum has an exhibit on the Molasses Reef wreck, which is the oldest European shipwreck in the Americas to have been excavated.

Another fascinating sight are the old salinas from the bygone sea salt industry . The features near town still exhibit the brine gates and windmill pumps, in contrast to Hawkes Nest Salina near the cruise port, which has essentially become an extensive salt flat.

Gibbs Cay and Stingrays

Found off the east coast of Grand Turk, the small and scenic Gibbs Cay stingray encounter is another highlight of the area. At this small and uninhabited sea oat-covered island, friendly wild stingrays swim up to meet visitors. Discovering this island is a fun family vacation activity.

You’ll be able to snorkel with these majestic sea creatures in their natural environment, an all-too-rare encounter with wild animals. For those who may be unsure in the water, the white sands of the beach here and the views from the bluffs are also draws.

Humpback Whales

Although only a winter season activity, humpback whale watching is another interesting activity. The southern-most migration point for many western Atlantic humpbacks, the whales journey to banks around the Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic to mate and give birth.

It’s not predictable, however the opportunity to snorkel with these giant marine mammals may present itself. Swimming in the spectacularly blue ocean with whales is an unforgettable experience.

Boat Charters and Tours

There’s a wide selection of boat cruises and fishing tours for those who’d like to get out on the turquoise and blue ocean. Choose from a private tour or shared excursion.

A day trip on the water to explore our uninhabited cays is an amazing experience. There are quite a few little islands located within boating distance of Grand Turk, including Gibbs Cay , Round Cay , Long Cay , and Martin Alonzo Pinzon Cay , the easternmost land in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Exploring and Island Tours

Last but definitely not least is simply getting out and exploring on your own, one of our top recommended activities.

Grand Turk is an excellent place to discover by rental car, golf car or scooter . The island is small, it’s almost impossible to get lost, there are no dangerous areas, and there are many interesting sights and beaches to find.

Horseback riding is offered to cruise guests with rides on the eastern coast.

If you’d rather have a guide, there are several organized island tours to choose from, including open-air truck tours, and led ATV and dune buggy adventures.

Several fishing charters operate from Cockburn Town with reef and deep sea sport fishing. However, be advised that due to the time constraints of cruise visitors, these types of tourists may find they don’t have enough time.

For shore fishermen, remember that all fishing requires a license and fishing in National Parks is prohibited. The Columbus Landfall National Park (named after Christopher Columbus' presumed new world landfall in Grand Turk) covers much of the western coast, starting from near the Carnival-managed Cruise Center.

As it approaches its 20th anniversary, it continues to attract more than a million cruise guests annually. But what sets this destination apart and makes it so appealing to cruise passengers? Let’s dive in.

Grand Turk Cruise Port History

Built in 2006 by Carnival Corporation, the $50 million cruise center is located on the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, meaning they are under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center encompasses 14 acres and features a two-berth pier, port complex, bars, a pool, retail, a shore excursion hub, on-site attractions, and gorgeous white-sand beaches.

The beaches are just a short walk from the cruise center, allowing visitors to swim, sunbathe, and relax in the warm Caribbean sun.

A wide range of water sports and activities are available right off the ship, like diving, parasailing, and floating obstacle courses. The island offers many options for guests to take an organized tour or explore independently.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is a popular destination for several major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, which owns and operates the port. Carnival Cruise Line has a long history with Grand Turk, with the first ship docking at the port in 2006.

Since then, Carnival Cruise Line has brought millions of passengers to the Grand Turk, making it one of the most popular private destinations in cruising.

Carnival Cruise Line operates several ships regularly visiting Grand Turk Cruise Center, including the Carnival Venezia, Carnival Horizon, Marella Discovery, and Carnival Celebration.

Location of the Grand Turk cruise port

Grand Turk Cruise Center is situated on the island’s western side, just a short distance from the capital city of Cockburn Town, home to about 5,000 residents.

The pier can accommodate up to two mega-ships at a time, making it a popular destination for cruise lines leaving from the East Coast. The pier was recently expanded to accommodate Carnival’s largest ships, including the 180,000-ton, 5,200-passenger Excel class.

Additionally, the terminal is easily accessible for visitors with disabilities, with ramps and other accommodations available to ensure equal access for all. Some locals can assist if a guest has mobility issues and can not walk down the long pier.

(NOTE: Extending a few dollars’ gratuity if you require assistance is customary as the cruise line does not employ the individuals.)

Attractions and Facilities

One of the main attractions at the center is Margaritaville. This popular restaurant and bar offer a lively atmosphere with music, drinks, and food.

One standout for Grand Turk’s Margaritaville is a swim-up bar where guests can enjoy a cool, refreshing beverage without leaving the pool. Cabanas are available for those who want to relax in a more private setting.

The pool area at Margaritaville can sometimes be inappropriate for children due to alcohol and language, so be cautious.

Two public restrooms in the cruise port area are attended by janitorial staff who work hard to keep the facilities clean and tidy.

In addition to the pool at Margaritaville, there are two beaches at Grand Turk, the main beach off to the left side of the pier and a recently added second beach on the right side of the pier with shade trees at the main beach, beachside bar, ice cream, and retail shop.

For the adventurous, the FlowRider is a must-try. This simulated surfing experience suits all levels, from beginners to experts. This is the same experience found on Royal Caribbean ships but is less reliable than its shipboard counterpart as it is only sometimes operational.

There are also loungers for guests to relax and soak up the warm Caribbean.

Be mindful of sand fleas at the beach early in the morning and toward the end of the day; they didn’t seem as prevalent in the day’s heat.

Governor’s Beach is a little past the port, but it is not accessible unless you leave the port complex, as there is a cargo dock with no trespassing signage between the two beaches. Once you reach Jack’s Shack, you can only get a little further.

Poolside cabanas are available for those who want to relax in a more private setting. The cabanas can go fast depending on how many ships are in port (remember, two ships can dock there, adding up to a combined 10,000 visitors a day.

As of late 2023, the cabanas are $399 for six hours and do not come with food or drinks, making the price steep. Cabana renters won’t have to go without nourishment as a dedicated server from Margaritaville is assigned to deliver food or drinks from the restaurant.

Starbucks at Grand Turk

For those who need their caffeine fix – even in the Caribbean – there’s an on-site Starbucks just outside the duty-free shop where guests debark the ship – it’s hard to miss as it’s a giant pink building albeit a little pricier than a typical U.S.-based Starbucks, the Grand Turk version offers various drinks. A large latte costs $8.

Note that the Grand Turk Starbucks does not accept the Starbucks app for payment – it is strictly cash or credit card. The credit card machine is hit or miss, so having cash as a backup wouldn’t hurt.

Outside of the Port Area

Grand Turk is a beautiful and scenic destination with lots to do outside of the port area, but remember that when you are off Carnival’s property, you are not under the eye of port security.

While Grand Turk is generally as safe as any other tourist destination, it’s always best to use common sense when traveling. Once guests are past the gates, they can be approached by vendors trying to offer them everything from trinkets to boat rides.

One caveat – beach chairs are available for rent outside the cruise port property. Many guests think that is part of the package, but fees are associated with umbrellas or other services, so be forewarned.

In addition to the beach, the Grand Turk Cruise Center offers visitors the opportunity to explore the island with organized tours onboard the ship.

The island has various historic sites and attractions, including the Grand Turk Lighthouse, a visit to the salt mines, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum.

Shore excursions are available through third-party vendors; however, because there isn’t a lot of competition on Grand Turk, prices for independent tour operators companies and the cruise line tend to align with one another.

Diving the Grand Turk Wall

The Grand Turk Wall, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Caribbean, is a massive underwater cliff that drops off 7,000 feet just off the coast of Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is one of the deepest walls in the world and is home to a diverse range of marine life, including sharks, rays, turtles, and colorful fish.

The Grand Turk Wall is a popular destination for cruise shore excursions because it offers a unique and exciting opportunity to experience the underwater world.

Snorkeling and diving tours are available, and visitors can get up close to the wall and see the incredible marine life that calls it home.

In some instances, a cruise-organized tour can be less expensive than Carnival’s Stingray excursion, which costs $89 per person – roughly $10 cheaper than those from independent tour operators.

The Turks and Caicos National Museum , located near the Grand Turk Cruise Center, offers visitors a chance to learn about the islands’ history. The museum has a collection of artifacts that tell the story of the islands’ history, including exhibits on the Lucayan Indians, the salt industry, and the wreck of the Molasses Reef. A highlight is a replica of a traditional Caicos sloop used for fishing and transportation in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Shopping at Grand Turk Cruise Center

Like most Caribbean destinations, Grand Turk Cruise Center offers a variety of retail stores. Remember, the island has nothing unique – think of spots like Diamonds International, Effy, etc.

Most retail shops are limited to the cruise port as the island is not developed for tourism besides the occasional grocery store, electronics shop, or bar.

One of the most popular shops at the center is the Ron Jon Surf Shop, offering surf gear, beachwear, logo items, and accessories. Visitors can find everything they need for a day at the beach, including swimwear, towels, and sunscreen.

Cruisers sailing out of Port Canaveral might be tempted to pick up a Ron Jon shirt in Grand Turk and then go to the Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, located minutes from the Port Canaveral cruise terminal, to get one.

Margaritaville has a small gift shop with T-shirts, towels, magnets, and other trinkets with stand-alone kiosks and stands offering souvenirs and other items.

Dining Options

Grand Turk does offer its share of restaurants, but guests who plan on eating something ashore – whether it’s a full, sit-down meal or just a snack – can expect a pricey dining experience. Generally speaking, island cuisine tends to be pricey because of the logistics of getting food from the mainland to the island as food and beverages arrive on cargo ships.

Here are a few notable places to eat:

Jack’s Shack

Just a short walk from the cruise port, Jack’s Shack is a favorite among visitors. It offers a relaxing beachfront setting where diners can enjoy tasty Caribbean and American dishes with their toes in the sand. Their jerk chicken and fresh seafood options are particularly popular. A jerk chicken combo and cocktail will set guests back about $30.

For those who don’t want to make the 10-minute walk to Jack’s Shack, a taxi ride costs about $7 each way. Note that the walk is not accessible for people with mobility issues.

Margaritaville at Grand Turk

Located steps from the Grand Turk Cruise Center, Margaritaville is convenient for cruise passengers. This chain restaurant offers a familiar menu with various burgers, salads, and its famous (and pricey) margaritas. It’s a fun, laid-back place to enjoy a meal, with a large pool, swim-up bar, a DJ, and a lounging area for guests to relax.

One can’t-miss is their signature margaritas. Just bring your wallet, as the “frozen concoctions that help you hang on” start at $18.

Beached Whale

A fairly new addition to the Grand Turk cruise port is the Beached Whale Bar and Grill. This offers Caribbean eats and drinks, with open-air views and servers that will tend to you in the shade or on the beach. Having eaten at different venues within the cruise, this is by far the best choice. Great food with Margaritaville prices (this is a subsidiary of Margaritaville)!

Guests who are up for a short taxi ride or a stroll, venturing into downtown Grand Turk opens up more dining options with eateries that serve up traditional Turks and Caicos cuisine, allowing you to sample dishes like conch fritters, peas n’ rice, and other island specialties.

Rooted in History and Space

Grand Turk Cruise Center is not only a popular tourist destination but also has historical significance dating back to the pre-Columbian era and has played a significant role in the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

One of the most notable events in Grand Turk’s history was the landing of astronaut John Glenn in 1962. Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, and he made history when his space capsule splashed down right outside Grand Turk.

Today, visitors can visit the landing site and see the replica capsule and monument commemorating this historic event. Grand Turk has also played a role in the history of navigation.

Aside from serving as an important stop for ships traveling between Europe and the Americas, Grand Turk was used as a base by the United States Navy during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the island’s historic lighthouse and view maps and other navigational tools used by sailors in the past.

The pier where cruise ships dock in Grand Turk is next to a stunning beach, inviting passengers to spend the day basking in the sun, swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying water activities.

Grand Turk is a small island (7 miles long and 1.5 miles wide). Inevitably there are only a few excursions to explore farther inland and just a few activities to enjoy.

Amongst top attractions, we have a few adrenaline-pumping favorites such as the 4x4 safari tour, the Dune Buggy drive, a Horseback Ride N' Swim, and the Catamaran sailing. For those who like cultural things, the excursions touring Historic Homes, the Old Town, and the Museum are the most interesting.

Where ships dock and the cruise center

Unlike most Caribbean ports (where cruise ships dock close to a principal town), you will only find the Grand Turk Cruise Center at the end of the pier. The Grand Turk Cruise Center is a large open-air cruise terminal dotted with excursion booths offering most of the possible tours and activities in Grand Turk. Most of these shore excursions can be booked online or onboard your cruise ship.

Tour Booth, Grand Turk

On the left side (north) of the Cruise Center, the traveler will find a very large Margaritaville bar, restaurant, with a huge pool and its signature retail shop - the Trading Post. Next to Margaritaville, you will find the Flow Rider surfing attraction that is exclusively offered as a shore excursion through the cruise lines. It is also on the North side that the most popular beach in Grand Turk is located - palm tree lined, with beach chairs on the white sugar powdered sand by the crystal clear turquoise water.

This is where the overwhelming majority of cruise travelers go to and it can get a bit crowded when there are two mega-ships in port (never more than two ships can dock at Grand Turk). The beach is free and so are the beach chairs, but if you would prefer a Clam shell shade, floats, or snorkeling gear you can rent these at the Beach Rental Hut located on the beach. Naturally, at this beach, you can also get all the pampering expected in a Caribbean beach - massages, drinks, food, and all sort of vendors roam the beach.

If you prefer a more quite spot to enjoy the stunning sea in Grand Turk, there is a nice stretch of sand to the right side (south) of the Pier - known as South Beach - with less vendor hassle but also with free chairs. Close by, there is a Massage Cabana and at the southern tip, there is a Beach Volleyball Area. And, last but not least, the Editor's favorite spot in Grand Turk to enjoy a quick bite - the Beached Whale Bar & Grill .

NASA Splashdown, Grand Turk

Also on the south side of the Cruise Center, you will find a rarely mentioned historical exhibit commemorating the NASA Mercury space program and the historic 1962 Splashdown of the Friendship 7 capsule off the coast of Grand Turk. Besides interesting storyboards, the exhibit features replicas of an Atlas rocket, the Friendship 7 capsule and a three-dimensional replica of astronaut John Glenn in spacesuit.

Shopping in Grand Turk

The open area of the Terminal is surrounded by the inevitably ubiquitous shops to be found in all Caribbean: Dufry, Colombian Emeralds, Effy Jewelers, Diamonds International, Piranha Joe, Silver Emporium, Del Sol or Tanzanite International. But also by a few local souvenir shops and craft market.

Grand Turk's Top Attractions

With so many facilities with such easy access, most cruisers do not venture much farther than the Cruise Center. However, either because you have been in Grand Turk before or just because you have an explorer's soul, this small island has a couple of sites to explore. The oldest town in the island - Cockburn Town - and the Salt Museum close by are offered on tours and the Lighthouse is a famous landmark. The pristine beaches are a must if you wish to experience how an idyllic deserted island feel like.

Even if you just enjoy the beach - and the ones by the Cruise Center are stunning enough - there a few other beaches that any cruise traveler should explore. One of the most popular is Governor's Beach , just 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of the Cruise Center, and considered by many as the best on the island. It is located close by the historical Governor’s mansion, Waterloo, hence the name.

This pristine beach with shallow water is lined by a thick Casuarina tree grove, ideal for shade and families but not for snorkeling. Although close to the pier, there isn't a walking path along the beach and the road is not well signed.

Taxi Dispatch, Grand Turk

IQCruising recommends a taxi to get there - $5.00 per person each way. At the Cruise Center, you will be offered a snorkel and swim package including transportation to and from the Governor’s Beach for $29.99 per person - this also includes snorkel gear (not of great use at this beach).

Shore Excursions or On Your Own

Unless you want to do something special that can only be done on an excursion - like Deep Sea Fishing, a Stingray Encounter on Gibbs Cay, Whale Watching Tours (seasonal) or a Glass-bottom Kayak tour - there are attractions that are perfectly feasible on your own. In fact, if you wish to explore Cockburn Town - the quaint capital of Turks and Caicos - and its attractions (the National Museum , Her Majesty’s Prison or the St Mary's Anglican Church ) a taxi ride costs around $5.00 per person each way. Even a trip by taxi to the Grand Turk Lighthouse , on the northern tip of the island, is affordable - $10 per person each way. The cruise traveler will find a taxi stand with metered fares by the east exit of the Cruise Center.

Grand Turk and the 2017 Hurricane Season

Although Grand Turk was hit by both hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the cruise pier wasn't affected and the terminal area has been revamped. Fact: Carnival's Ecstasy was the first cruise ship returning to Grand Turk on November 1, 2018.

Soak Up the Sun on a Grand Turk Beach

One of the things cruisers fret about most is having so much fun off the ship that they lose track of time and can’t make it back on time. When you spend the day at the Cruise Center Beach, there’s no chance that can happen as you’re literally just steps from your ship as you lounge on the gorgeous white sand and wade into the crystal clear waters which remain very calm throughout the day thanks to the shelter offered by the cruise pier. It’s a great spot to enjoy the day with family and friends.

You’re so close to the ship, you can even pop back on board for lunch and head back to the beach before it’s time to leave for good. Don’t forget your sunscreen and towel!

Other popular beaches found on the island include English Point Beach, Pillory Beach and Norman Saunders Beach, all found on the leeward side of the island.

Where to Eat on Grand Turk

There are popular spots to enjoy a meal just steps from your ship, like the Margaritaville bar and restaurant with a giant lagoon-style swimming pool and swim-up bar, the Beached Whale Bar & Grille and Aunty Nann’ homemade delights for dessert!

For those venturing outside of the port, Sandbar Restaurant in Cockburn Town, Arches on the Ridge and Barbie’s Restaurant are popular with cruisers and serve up authentic Caribbean cuisine cruisers will love. Whether you’re looking for a casual beach experience or a high-end dining experience, Grand Turk has a variety of restaurants and watering holes to choose from!

Where to Stay on Grand Turk

For those staying on the island for a few days, there are plenty of resorts and hotels offering all the best Grand Turk has to offer. Visitors can choose between high-end resorts, beachside hotels and even private bungalows for a more intimate experience while staying on Grand Turk.

The Turks Head Inne is one such beachside hotel with a stellar location just steps from the sand and a high rating from guests who have enjoyed a stay. Just down the beach is another option, the Manta House Hotel which offers private bungalows which are perfect for larger groups looking for the perfect place to stay on Grand Turk. Other options popular with visitors are the Bohio Dive Resort, the Grand Turk Inn, the Osprey Beach Hotel and Reef House.

Grand Turk Shore Excursions

If you’re looking for a little more adventure when you cruise to Grand Turk, make sure you check out all the unique excursion options available to cruise passengers and visitors alike. Along with Caribbean classics like snorkeling, scuba diving, bike excursions or kayaking, there are a number of unique tours available for visitors.

Some of the most popular shore excursions and activities include diving and snorkeling, horseback riding on the beach, dune buggy safaris, catamaran tours and the FloRider surfing simulator found next to the Margaritaville lagoon pool. The surfing simulator, which is found on some cruise ships, is perfect for all ability levels as you can stand up or lay down while riding the perfect wave that never ends!

Just South of the cruise port is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, Boaby Rock Point. This secluded beach and reef is a popular spot for snorkeling as it’s within walking distance of the port and is perfect for snorkeling and diving.

The island also caters to golfers thanks to the Waterloo Golf Club found on the grounds of the Office of the Governor of the Turks& Caicos Islands.

The Turks and Caicos National Museum in Cockburn Town is a great place to learn more about the history of the islands from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 through becoming an independent colony in 1959. The museum itself is located within the 200 year old Guinep House building named for the large Guinep tree found outside.

Swim with the Stingrays at Gibbs Cay

Also known as Stingray City, Gibbs Cay is a tiny stretch of sand located just a mile to the East of Grand Turk. The main attraction is the fever (large group) of stingrays which enjoy the warm, shallow waters of the cay. Though they visit the cay naturally, years of being fed squid and fish by tour guides and visitors means the rays are very friendly and only looking for a free meal! There are a number of tour operators offering visits to Gibbs Cay, many which also offer time for swimming, snorkeling and lunch for guests.

When most people imagine a trip to Turks and Caicos , they picture Grace Bay — a dreamscape of calm, clear waters and pristine white sands that’s consistently ranked on every list of the most beautiful beaches in the world . While it’s certainly understandable to immediately jump to the Caribbean nation’s most well-known asset, putting all your attention on Providenciales means overlooking some less obvious gems with plenty of vacation appeal — from tiny cays crowned by luxury resorts to Grand Turk. The capital and the second most populated island of the Turks and Caicos archipelago delivers all the sand-in-your-toes fantasies you’d expect. It’s also home to some tourist-oriented amenities such as a world-class cruise port and the largest Margaritaville in the Caribbean.

Getting to Grand Turk

All inbound international flights to Turks and Caicos arrive at Providenciales International Airport (PLS). Travelers headed to Grand Turk then hop on a quick charter operated by one of the two local airlines: Caicos Express Airways or interCaribbean . Several cruise lines port at Grand Turk Cruise Center. It’s also possible to anchor private yachts and boats here.

Best Things to Do on Grand Turk

The breathtaking beaches are the main reason people come to Turks and Caicos. And those visiting Grand Turk certainly won’t be disappointed in that department. The bean-shaped island is fringed by stunning stretches of soft sand and sparkling turquoise tides. Wild horses and donkeys even roam free. Many laud Governor’s Beach on the western coast as the prettiest seaside spot. It also benefits from a lack of trade winds and shade-giving casuarina trees, so it’s ideal for taking a relaxing break from the afternoon sun. Cockburn Town Beach, Pillory Beach, Cruise Center Beach, and English Point Beach are lovely, too. Active travelers will have a blast kayaking, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. Fans of offshore snorkeling and scuba diving should consider booking a boat excursion to swim with colorful marine life.

As the only port in Turks and Caicos, the island really caters to cruise passengers. The modern Grand Turk Cruise Center, which was built in 2006, offers shops, restaurants, bars, and a giant swimming pool. It’s also a hub for tours and vehicle rentals and is a short walk from Cruise Center Beach, which — not surprisingly — gets quite busy when ocean liners dock.

Travelers with an interest in the past will also find plenty to satisfy their curiosity. The Taino and Lucayan people called the area home for almost 700 years. After colonization decimated the Indigenous population, Grand Turk spent a century passing through the hands of pirates and various European countries before British colonialists from Bermuda established the salt industry there around 1680. Visitors can still see the remains of salt ponds and windmills today. The blufftop Grand Turks Lighthouse is among the most famous historic landmarks, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum in Cockburn Town displays artifacts such as a Lucayan carved wood ceremonial chair and Molasses Reef shipwreck remains.

Best Places to Eat and Drink on Grand Turk

Ridge Cafe at Arches on the Ridge is a lovely spot for homemade breakfast dishes like huevos rancheros, freshly baked goods, and espresso. It also serves lunch and dinner on weekends. Grand Turk Island is a must-visit destination on your cruise itinerary. This is a port when you should get off your ship to take in the stunning beaches, experience excursions, and take in the local culture. This attractive serene island has gorgeous white-sand beaches with crystal-clear waters and is packed with cultural and historical beauty. There are so many things to do in Grand Turk!

Carnival Cruise Line noticed this too. They turned the island into a cruise port in 2006 and is only open to Carnival and its subsidiary cruise lines. Grand Turks is the only cruise port on the islands of Turks & Caicos.

Grand Turk is one of those laid back islands where wild donkeys wander along the beach and in town. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, and not the Caribbean Sea, this small island is part of the islands that comprise the Turks and Caicos archipelago. Grand Turk is home to the government center at Cockburn Town. It has been the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands since 1766 but doesn’t feel like a stuffy capital city at all.

Popular Excursion Destinations in Grand Turk

Cockburn town.

Take a taxi into Cockburn Town (pronounced Co-burn) or sign up for an excursion that will take you into and about town. Reminiscent of Bermuda’s British influence during the salt industry boom, the older houses are examples of 18th British architecture and sport typical Victorian porches and some houses even have chimneys. A taxi between the cruise port complex and Cockburn Town will set you back about $4 to $9 USD each way.

While the Caicos and Turks have several perfect snorkeling and diving spots, Gibb’s Cay is an area where animal lovers can come and have an altogether different experience — playing with gentle stingrays. Do not allow their harsh name to fool you, these underwater flying creatures are frequently as gentle as a cat. While you disembark from your boat, you will probably notice the velvety feel of friendly stingrays around your feet. Something of a symbiosis developed here, and now stingrays approach boats and people to play with them and get fed by them. The stingrays are wild, and so should be treated with the utmost respect, but Gibbs Cay provides what other islands cannot: a magical experience and a chance to interact with one of Mother Nature’s most delicate underwater creatures.

Turks and Caicos National Museum

Visit the museum on the island. Situated on Front Street at Cockburn Town, the museum is housed in one of the old buildings on the Island. It hosts the oldest excavated shipwreck ever, which was found in West Caicos. The museum has other shipwrecks too, such as the treasure hunting Spanish ship, a slavery ship, and Taino’s artifacts. Tainos were the indigenous natives of the island believed to have inhabited it between 700 AD and the 15th century. They became extinct because of slavery and diseases in the 1500s, which left the island uninhabited for over a century. The tour of the museum costs about $5.

Grand Turk Lighthouse

The only lighthouse in Turks and Caicos is found at the northern end of Grand Turk. Built in 1852, the historical structure still stands but is no longer functional and visitors cannot enter the building. However, you can pay $5 (cash) to enter the grounds. While I don’t necessarily think this is worth the entrance, this was the one spot where we saw the most donkeys. My son was really happy that he got to touch one and that alone made it worth the ride to the lighthouse.

Grand Turk Cruise Center

Relax at the grand turk cruise port center.

If you do not want to wander away from the cruise ship, then relax at the cruise port center. Carnival spent $50 million making this cruise port for its cruisers. The cruise port is situated in the southernmost part of the island and a short walk after you disembark. It’s a big complex of about 30 acres. The cruise port is designed to be a small center of luxury for your port day. There are amenities like restaurants, spas, and if you love shopping, there’re gift shops and local jewelry stores at the port. At the cruise center, you’ll find a large beautiful swimming pool. Book a poolside cabana and enjoy private time away from the crowds and a dedicated waiter. Here you can swim or hang out with other shipmates, enjoying the tropical magic that’s Grand Turk.

Hang out at Grand Turk Margaritaville

Once you’re at the port head over to the Margaritaville, it is just one and a half minutes from the pier. Once there you’ll be greeted by a big yellow parrot statue at the entrance. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Grand Turk is the largest Margaritaville in the Caribbean. The popular dining establishment is the main restaurant at the cruise center, situated right next to the giant swimming pool and Flow Rider. It sports a swim-up bar, a trading post, and serves delicious meals in the assortment of Mexican, American, and Caribbean menus. Fill up on as much as you can and kick back and relax just some minutes away from the ship.

Try the Flow Rider

If you have wanted to hang ten, Grand Turk is the place to do it, no experience needed. At the Grand Turk Cruise Center, you can sign up for a 30-minute body and kneeboarding session on the Flow Rider, which simulates the feel of ocean waves. Enjoy the ride and do not forget to smile as photographers are on hand to capture your moment of glory, and maybe a wipe-out to laugh about later.

Learn about the Space Program

NASA’s Friendship 7 capsule splashed down near Grand Turks back in 1962. Grand Turk displays the capsule on the road between the Cruise Center and Cockburn. In 2011, a display was created in the Cruise Ship Port that explains the mission and pays homage to the Friendship 7 mission. It is just a few steps away from your cruise ship and worth stopping by.

Best Grand Turk Beaches Worth Exploring

All the beaches are public and free — so no need to pay an admission fee. You will have to pay for amenities like lounge chairs and umbrellas though. No matter which beach you go to on the island, you will find gorgeous, fine white sand and the clearest greenish blue water you’ve ever seen. It is a tropical paradise.

Cruise Center Beach

Stepping off the cruise ship is the perfect slice of beach heaven. You don’t have to go anywhere if you’re just looking to enjoy the beach. The best part about staying at the Cruise Center Beach is that you have the ability to go back on the ship to enjoy your meal plan if you’d like to save some money. Also, if you tend to get sunburned easily or want to get back out of the sun, you can easily get back on ship. Plus the Margaritaville is right there, so you’re never far from some fun. But if you want a lounge chair and umbrella – get there early!

Governor’s Beach

The next beach north from the Cruise Center is Governor’s Beach. You can’t walk there through the beach due to a secure merchant dock but it isn’t a bad walk on the road and it is a cheap and short taxi ride. You won’t find the lounge chairs and umbrellas. What you will find is the same gorgeous sand and water but without all the crowds! A few vendors sell snacks and drinks out of coolers – so bring cash!

English Point Beach

Between Governor’s Beach and Cockburn Town Beach is a stretch known as English Point Beach. The access point is near the end of the airport’s runway, near the Friendship 7 capsule. This beach is a bit rockier than the others but even more secluded than the others we found. There were only two vehicles parked there when we stopped. You’ll find the same gorgeous sand and same clear water. But we saw no vendors on this beach though.

Cockburn Town Beach

If you’re going into town, you’ll be able to enjoy the beach in town.The beach is not as wide in town and there are big walls to climb down to access the beach. But again, it was even less crowded than the other beaches we saw and just as gorgeous but with the backdrop of the town behind and the added advantage of small shops to pick up snacks and drinks nearby.

Boaby Rock Point

We did not make it to Boaby Rock Point. It is supposedly the best spot for snorkeling and reputedly hard to find. It certainly proved to be so for us. Sunburned from the other beaches we already saw, we ended up skipping it once we turned around about three times when we couldn’t find the entrance.

Local Grand Turk Eats with A View

Because most visitors spend only an afternoon in Grand Turk, there are not a slew of restaurants to choose from. There are some places to grab lunch, a cold brew, and perhaps hang out for the entire afternoon.

Margaritaville

There is a huge Margaritaville at the Cruise Center! It is perfect for those less adventurous with their food experiences and those who prefer to stay close to the ship. It is essentially the same menu as all the other Jimmy Buffet’s restaurants, but if your strategy is to go back and forth to the ship all day, it is convenient. If you are looking to use their Wi-Fi, be warned that it is slow and the good connections can be found near the router on the 2nd level. They have lots of activities to keep crowds entertained all day.

Jack’s Shack

Jack’s Shack has become the afternoon escape from the crowded Cruise Center. The Shack is just a short 540-yard walk north from the cruise dock. Print out a coupon from their site to get a free shot of locally produced rum. They’re known for their delicious jerk chicken which goes for around $10, barbeque shrimp with fries, and strong cold drinks. Possibly the best thing about this restaurant is that it accepts credit cards when most other restaurants take cash only. They serve conch fritters, which are perfect. Head on over there and grab a bite while being entertained to enchanting reggae tunes.

Osprey Beach Hotel Restaurant

If a quieter luncheon is your taste, hop into a taxi to the Osprey Beach Hotel. There you will discover poolside dining with a bird’s-eye view of the ocean. They offer free Wi-Fi, too.

How to Explore Grand Turk on Your Own

The island is about 7 miles long, so it is easy to explore on your own. There are several ways to do so:

There are a handful of cars available for rent on the island. But you’ll need cash for the experience. There are also several 4×4’s available. All of these are substantially more expensive than renting a golf cart — unless there is a reason you need a vehicle, just relax and enjoy it!

Rent a golf cart

The most popular and a great way to explore the island on your own is to rent a golf cart. For about $100 a day, you’ll get to ride around the town. The only thing is that we only saw one gas station in town and you do have to fill it before returning it to the center. We had the most fun driving around in our golf cart! At one point there was a small caravan of golf carts following each other from one point to the next.

Hire a taxi

As soon as you disembark from your cruise ship, you will find lots of options for exploring the island, including taxi drivers who will take you to your preferred destination. This is the perfect option if you know where you’d like to go and want to make arrangements with a driver for a specific pick up time at the end of the day.

Ride the tram

One of the tours that can be booked is an open air tram which explores the island. The 3 hour tram ride limits visitors exploration but there is an all day option which also allows more flexibility for visitors to spend more time visiting the island’s stops.

We saw a few couples walking around the island but mostly to one of the beaches near the Port and as far as Cockburn Town. We do not recommend walking for a few reasons. First, it is incredibly sunny and hot, with absolutely no cover. Second, there are a lot of donkeys around and you may have to walk around them, just in case. Third, the area just north of the Cruise Center is a secure, guarded area, so you cannot walk through the beach and have to walk around.

Grand Turk Excursions

The Grand Turk excursions listed below are not unique to Grand Turk but Grand Turk is a great place to experience them if you’d like to try them during your cruise.

If a slow horseback ride along a white sandy beach is on your to-do list, Grand Turk can be the best place to try it. Sign up for horseback riding at the start of your cruise to avoid disappointment as it frequently sells out. After a short van ride to the stable, guests are given a safety briefing before mounting their steed. You will don a life preserver, and your horse will be fitted with a water suitable saddle. After some time in one direction in the water, the leader gives the signal for the horses to head back. Almost in unison, the horses turn in the ocean and set their sights on a fast return trip. Hold on tight because the herd actually wants to get moving. It is a wonderful experience, both in the water and on land.

If you are a certified scuba diver, you’re in luck. Grand Turk is surrounded by the 3rd-largest coral reef in the world. Scuba diving excursions may take you inside the explosion of color that lives beneath the surface of the water. It all starts just a 10-minute boat ride away from where the cruise ships dock. Oh, and get ready to meet some of the locals on your dive as the area is home to turtles, stingrays, and a whole host of brightly colored fish.

Snorkel & Swim

Even if you aren’t a certified diver, you can explore the reef of Grand Turk with your own snorkel gear or on a snorkeling excursion. Children aged five and up can typically come along, and a guide will offer safety instructions and lead you on a tour of the highlights beneath the surface. Snorkel equipment will be offered on most excursions but bring a towel and sunscreen with you from the ship. To maximize your time in port, reserve some time for hitting the beach after your snorkel so you can swap stories of what you have seen. Yes, that means it is time to brag about your barracuda sighting and swimming with sea turtles!

Catamaran Sail

Yes, you just got off a ship. But this one is smaller than your cruise ship an promises a smooth ride. Stepping aboard a catamaran is a perfect way to explore Grand Turk’s coves and beaches, marine, and reef life. On catamaran excursions, you can sit back and enjoy ocean breezes as you take in the Instagram worthy vistas, or you can opt to snorkel the reef, swim, and just lie back and float in the crystal-clear water. You control the pace but whatever activity you select, you can count on photos and scenery that will make everybody back home green with envy.

Kayak or Paddleboard

If you are looking for a little exercise and need to get out into Grand Turk’s beautiful water, consider a kayak and stand up paddleboard (SUP) tour. Even if it is your first time trying one of these water sports, you will be in the best hands and learn good techniques from knowledgeable guides. Plus, you will be getting a workout at the same time as learning more about the history and natural side of the island. Allow time for a dip and even a snorkel and this excursion is the definition of a win-win situation.

Know Before You Go to Grand Turk Island

Grand turk weather.

The best times to visit Grand Turk are between October and May as that is when the weather is clear and sunny. Grand Turk has tropical weather all through the year. It is hot most of the year, particularly from May to October. The cooler season starts from December to March. The average daily temperature is around 75 Fahrenheit.

Grand Turk Currency

The US Dollar is the official currency in the Turks and Caicos. However, a lot of places do not accept credit cards, so plan to bring cash to pay for your purchases, including vehicle rentals. While there is an ATM machine in port, do not count on it working or being available.

Grand Turk Beer

It has to be said but you can either pay a ton of money to drink American beer or pay very little money to drink delicious local beer. May we suggest that you try the local Turks Head beer and save the American beer for once you’re back on the ship. We stopped at one of the local liquor stores and stocked up on two of each kind — a light lager, IPA, and amber. They were a great value and really good!

Why You Should Visit Grand Turk

With beautiful weather nearly year-round (the exception obviously being the unpredictable height of hurricane season – August through November), cruise passengers have come to love their brief visit to this modest, small island. Whether you select to hang out, eat, and shop at the cruise center, venture into town, or buy a shore excursion, a port call in Grand Turk is sure to be a fun and memorable experience.

We get it that sometimes, you don’t want to do an excursion when you’re on a cruise. Grand Turk is a perfect port to just walk off the ship and relax on the beach.

We rented a golf cart and explored the island on our own during our port day in Grand Turk. Grand Turk is a beautiful island to just enjoy the beaches and relax away from the stress of everyday life.

Ah, Grand Turk . Where the sun shines down on turquoise waters and white sand stretches as far as the eye can see. But there’s more to this tropical outpost in Turks & Caicos than its stunning beaches. When you cruise to Grand Turk, don’t forget to make time for one or more of these other great ways to see the island. (And, don’t worry, those gorgeous beaches made our list, too!) In no particular order, here are the top things to do in Grand Turk.

1. Scuba Dive

If you’re a certified scuba diver, you probably already know that Grand Turk is surrounded by the third-largest coral reef in the world. A scuba dive excursion can take you inside the colorful explosion of color that lives beneath the water’s surface—and it all starts just a 10-minute boat ride away from where the cruise ships dock. Oh, and get ready to meet some of the locals on your dive—the area is home to turtles, stingrays, and a whole host of brightly colored fish.

To book a diving excursion, you must present a valid C-Card and must have logged a dive within the last two years.

2. Snorkel & Swim

Even if you’re not a certified diver, you can still explore the reef of Grand Turk with your own snorkel gear or on a snorkeling excursion . Kids 5 and up can usually come along and a guide will provide safety instructions and lead you on a tour of the highlights beneath the surface. Snorkel equipment will be provided on most excursions but bring a towel and any other beach or sun essentials you need with you from the ship. To maximize your time in port, reserve some time for hitting the beach after your snorkel so you can swap stories of what you’ve seen—yes, that means it’s time to brag about your barracuda sighting!

3. Off Road ATV

Rev up your sense of adventure with an ATV excursion that lets you explore the beauty of Grand Turk via rugged trails and paths. You’ll visit salt ponds and mangroves, and traverse the island’s hills so you can scope out some of the best views. Hang on tight and enjoy the views of the water and surrounding cays.

Drivers typically must be 16 years of age with a valid driver’s license. Check for additional safety restrictions.

Royal Caribbean International has canceled stops at its private beach in Haiti through September as a result of the violence plaguing the island nation, a private fan blog, citing messages to travelers, reports. AP

MIAMI – Royal Caribbean has canceled stops at its private port of Labadee through the summer because of simmering violence in Haiti.

In March, the cruise line canceled stops at the private beach area through May, but this week Royal Caribbean reworked cruise schedules through the summer and into September, a post on the Royal Caribbean Blog said.

“Guests booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are getting notifications from Royal Caribbean that their visits to Labadee have been canceled,” the blog said. “On Tuesday (April 23), cruisers began to share updates they received from Royal Caribbean that their itineraries have been updated to drop Labadee and replace it with another port or a sea day.”

Labadee is a beach area on a peninsula in northern Haiti near Cap-Haitien used exclusively by Royal Caribbean. The cruise line has its own security force at the site, which is walled off from the rest of the country.

The 260-acre site has been leased by Royal Caribbean since the 1980s. It is about a six-hour drive from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and thus far has not seen any incidents of violence, the blog said.

More than 2,500 people were killed or injured in gang violence from January to March across Haiti, a more than 50% increase from the same period last year, according to a report Friday by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti. The vast majority of violence is in Port-au-Prince .

Cap-Haitien, Haiti’s former capital, has been spared much of the violence and is going through a bit of a resurgence, The Associated Press said . Business owners, anxious parents and even historic state ceremonies have been relocating there, and that began even before gangs started attacking key government infrastructure in Port-au-Prince in late February.

Royal Caribbean International had no formal announcements of the changes posted to its website. Royal Caribbean Blog is an unofficial site for fans of the cruise line and is not affiliated with Royal Caribbean International.

But it cited chatter and messages from cruise ticket holders about changes to their itinerary that showed stops at Labadee were being canceled and replaced with either an extra day of cruising at sea or stops in alternate ports.

A notice from the cruise line, reposted on the blog, informed guests about the change in travel plans, without explicitly mentioning the violence.

“Due to the continuing situation in Haiti, we’ll now visit Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, instead of Labadee, Haiti,” the notice reads. “We’re sorry for the change – your safety is our top priority. Nevertheless, we’re excited to visit a new port with you!”

Grand Turk is the capital island in the Turks and Caicos archipelago north of Haiti.

Royal Caribbean has stopped ships from docking at a private island port in Haiti due to ongoing violence in the region.

The cruise line canceled ships from docking at that port through May, but last week Royal Caribbean modified cruise schedules to avoid the port throughout the summer and into September, according to a post on the Royal Caribbean blog.

“Guests booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are getting notifications from Royal Caribbean that their visits to Labadee have been canceled,” the blog post stated . “On Tuesday (April 23), cruisers began to share updates they received from Royal Caribbean that their itineraries have been updated to drop Labadee and replace it with another port or a sea day.”

Labadee is a beach area owned by Royal Caribbean located on a peninsula in northern Haiti. It is barricaded from the rest of the country and has its own security force.

Between January and March of this year, more than 2,500 people were killed or injured due to violence across Haiti, specifically in the capital of Port-au-Prince.

Royal Caribbean International did not formally announce any changes on its website. Royal Caribbean Blog is not connected with Royal Caribbean International and is just a site for fans of the cruise liner.

However, the blog reposted a notice from the cruise liner about the itinerary changes without mentioning the violence.

This decision by Royal Caribbean comes after the U.S. issued a warning to tourists to avoid traveling to Haiti at this time due to an increase in gang-related violence.
