Great country, excellent tour leader but very poor comfort...so think about it twice before taking the tour, little space in a boat, no real shower...and I won't comment the toilets. ..and in august, it's very windy so you will never be able to relax in the deck..just watch the others being sick...Just so you know.....but the country is nice and worth exploring.

Best of Greece

Overall, our 8-day trip to Greece in September of 2023 was fantastic! Our trip started in Athens where we had excellent accommodations (including breakfast) and a great tour of the Acropolis, the museum, and the Temple of Poseidon. We arrived in Mykonos on Day 3 to find our hotel had moved to a different location on the island. The company accommodated us with a vehicle as the hotel was in a completely different part of the island. Thankfully someone in our group was willing to drive! The hotel was really nice and located within walking distance of shops/dining. Our final part of the trip was in Santorini. The tours in Santorini were amazing (afternoon/dinner/sunset cruise on a catamaran and a bus tour of the island with wine tasting)! However, the hotel accommodations we less than desirable in Santorini. Our room was very old and rundown. All transfers to/from the airports/ferries were excellent, as well! I would highly recommend utilizing Tourratdar for your upcoming holiday! They were accommodating and communicative throughout the entire process. Personally, in hindsight, we would've planned for 1 additional day in Athens and 1 additional day in Santorini.

We had a wonderful time visiting Greece. Dilimar from Travel Zone was great to work with from the beginning and very accommodating when I asked for a couple of changes to our Itinerary. The only complaint that I have is after we arrived, we found that our tours in Mykonos and Santorini were rescheduled on the last day instead of the first day. If they had been scheduled as originally planned, I may have revisited some of the places that we stopped at. All in all though Travel Zone did a great job. Nice hotels, all pickup and drop offs on time and the tour guides at each stop were excellent.

Greece is a beautiful country with plenty of history. We have a great extra days in Athens visiting most of the historical places. Great shops and foods in trendy Plaka and Monastiraki. The island hopping to Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini was perfect though the ferry queuing was a challenge but manageable. An extra day in Santorini could have been better as the wooden boat tour time consumed the full day activity. The itinerary description was perfect, guided us through all the way to the last day of the tour. The pick-up and transfers were prompt. Thank you!

I LOVED this tour, 3 days in each place was perfect to get to know them and do what you want! Our tour guide Kiki from Costsaver was phenomenal and when I had my back give out, she went to the ER in Santorini with me and helped me a lot BC she knew Greek and I didn’t! Santorini was my favorite! Would definitely visit Greece again!

  • Coach / Bus
Bus service, tour guides were excellent. Time management was good but some breaks could have been avoided. Itinerary showed that arrival to ATH airport was 12 pm. Based on this we booked returning flight later in the evening. Instead we reached ATH at 9.15 AM thus ended up a very long return journey.

Authentic Greek Islands Tour

Authentic Greek Islands

This is a great tour if you want you accommodation and transport handled but want to be in control of everything else. The only thing that would have made it better was if I'd been with a group of other people doing the tour rather than completely on my own (just so there were familiar faces around).

Charms of the Cyclades Tour

Charms of the Cyclades

The train from Athens literally fell off the tracks. And the people at Tour Radar were waiting for us when our bus for the train finally arrived at the terminal. They went way out of their way to give us a nice tour of as many sights as we had time for. The train ride was pretty awful but the tour was worth the ride.

What people love about Athens Santorini & Mykonos Tours

Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again
Mia our leader gets 10/10! We were lucky to have her as our guide. She made everything easy and we saw so much in a short time. This has been a memorable trip. It's my first Intrepid tour. I will definitely be doing more and will recommend them to my friends!! Thanks Intrepid
Max was an amazing Skipper and went to great lengths to ensure we all had an amazing experience. I highly recommend this trip and will definitely be coming back for future adventures.

Day-by-day itinerary

greece tours athens mykonos santorini

Board your overnight flight to Athens today.

Close your eyes and take in the smell of orange blossoms and olive trees—you’re in Greece. Meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Nothing can prepare you for the sheer sense of awe you’ll feel when you come face-to-face with Athens, where ancient architecture and artifacts coexist with modern life. Meet up with your dedicated local guide, who will introduce you to the highlights of this bustling capital.

  • Pass by the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely out of marble—the only such stadium in the world.
  • Continue to Syntagma Square, home to the neoclassical Greek Parliament building, and admire the plaza’s imposing marble steps, fountain, and lush shade trees.
  • Reflect on the Arch of Hadrian, built to honor the Roman emperor, and imagine how its Pentelic marble stones were carted more than 11 miles from Mount Pentelikon in 131 AD.
  • View the remains of the sixth-century Temple of Zeus and gaze up at its 16 ornate Corinthian columns.
  • Drive through the Plaka district, one of the oldest parts of Athens, known as “the neighborhood of the gods” due to the dozens of monuments strewn throughout the area at the foot of the Acropolis.
  • Set off on a walking tour around the ancient Acropolis—site of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion. You may have seen these enduring icons of antiquity in books and film, but now you’re traipsing through the work of craftsmen who quarried and honed these marble blocks thousands of years ago.

Enjoy a free afternoon in Plaka, a neighborhood largely unbothered by time and modernity, with distinctive red-tiled rooftops, outdoor cafes, and colorful street vendors. Prefer to taste your way through Athens? Add an excursion and remember to say kali orexi—local speak for “have a good appetite.”

Food of Athens Walking Tour

From $95 per person

We’re off to the islands! Travel by ferry to Mykonos and join your Tour Director on a walk through Mykonos Town’s narrow, labyrinthian streets bursting with cafes, galleries, and shops. Surrender to the soft, salty air on The Island of The Winds.

  • See the iconic white windmills in Mykonos Town, built as early as the 16th century and originally used to mill wheat and barley, and watch their thatched roofs dance in the sea breeze.
  • Delight in Little Venice—perched right alongside the Aegean Sea shoreline and inspired by its Italian namesake—where the colorful sun-splashed residences seem to melt into the water, their balconies hanging over the sea.
  • Pass the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, eminently photographed for its Byzantine-era, whitewashed facade and intriguing curves.

Sit down this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Want to add another island to your list? Add an optional excursion to legendary Delos for a guided tour steeped in history and Greek mythology.

Not joining the excursion? Use your free day in Mykonos to hit the cobblestones early and take your time. If visiting the island’s famous beach clubs isn’t your speed, head back to Little Venice for a stroll along the Old Harbor; hike down to Armenistis Lighthouse, one of the oldest in Greece; or get lost in Matogianni Street’s shops and galleries.

You’ve seen the photos—now get ready to star in them yourself. You can eat your way through traditional dishes—like moussaka, a hearty eggplant dish, or tomato fritters—then use your free time to explore unique pebbly beaches and crystal clear waters.

Looking to expand your palate? Add an excursion to a local winery for a tour and a tasting.

Please note: For an additional cost, you can book a visit to the village of Oia through your Tour Director. The visit will either take place on the evening of day 6 or the morning of day 8, depending on ferry and flight schedules.

Santorini Winery Visit & Tasting

From $69 per person

Your guided tour of Santorini will take you from dramatic black-sand beaches to jagged cliff-lined shores and back—a stark contrast to the island’s beloved whitewashed buildings and sprays of bright fuchsia bougainvillea vines.

  • Visit the archaeological excavations at Akrotiri, a settlement buried in volcanic ash, where richly pigmented Bronze Age frescoes and other Minoan artifacts survived a devastating volcano eruption in the 16th Century BCE.
  • Ride to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias panoramic views of Santorini, neighboring island chains, and the blue waters kissing the horizon.
  • Stop in small, picturesque Pyrgos, where you’ll weave through the steep streets of this slightly off-the-beaten-path village.

Spend a free afternoon poking around authentic shops and sampling the local wine, or join the optional excursion and hop on a catamaran for a steal-your-breath-away cruise starring the village of Oia.

Santorini Caldera Cruise & Dinner

From $149 per person

This afternoon, fly to Athens and celebrate your trip with your group at tonight’s farewell dinner, served with beer or wine. Kali antamosi—or “until we meet again.”

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your stay to the Eternal City—Rome—where you’ll traipse across timeworn paths as the city’s monuments keep enduring watch. And if you have the chance to cap off a week of Greek food with a few days of pasta and gnocchi, seize it!

Fly to the Italian capital today. When you arrive, you can—and may we say, you should—choose to treat yourself to a culinary-themed walking tour of the lively, historic Trastevere neighborhood and its countless trattorias. To unwind on your own, spend your free time this evening following in the footsteps of the ancient Romans to the Colosseum—the monumental amphitheater—and the evocative ruins of the Forum, once the pulsating heart of Roman life. Listen for bygone echoes of parades and gripping trials as you explore the remnants of this age-old marketplace.

Food of Rome: Walking Tour of Trastevere

From $135 per person

Meet a local guide for a morning walk through central Rome, visiting the Eternal City’s bewitching squares and fountains.

  • Start at the Spanish Steps to view the Fontana della Barcaccia, a sculptural fountain in the shape of a sunken ship overflowing with water, commemorating the flooding of the Tiber River in 1598.
  • Continue to the iconic Trevi Fountain, built in the 18th century to celebrate water and the god Oceanus, dripping with Baroque glamor, statues, and intricate carvings.
  • Pause for a gelato break—pistachio? Chocolate? Better get both—and continue to the Pantheon to enter the best preserved ancient Roman temple dating to the second century. Feast your eyes on its perfect symmetry and engineering brilliance.
  • Finish at the sumptuous Piazza Navona, site of Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. We especially love it illuminated after nightfall if you’d like to return.

Later, you won’t want to skip the guided tour of St. Paul’s Basilica—one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas. You can also choose to spend your free afternoon in Rome exploring on your own. Be sure to ask your Tour Guide for recommendations.

Please note: On some departures, the Rome sightseeing tour and the Ancient Rome: St. Paul’s Basilica & the Catacombs excursion may take place on day 11 and the Iconic Sights: Vatican City excursion may take place on day 10. Entrance to the Pantheon may not be possible on certain days, your tour will explore the Pantheon’s exterior instead.

First off we think we had the best tour Director. He made sure we were safe and informed. Give him a raise . The hard part for us was the travel to and from Greece . It would have been nice to know what to expect. We did not know what to ask because we did not know what we were going to encounter.

This trip was amazing and would highly recommend to anyone interested in visiting Greece. I was skeptical about the tour at first because I thought a week is too short to see anything. We did so much in that week and we had some free time as well. If I go back on this tour, I would like to stay a...

That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Transportation by motor coach, public ferry and commercial flight
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day- this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Stone and marble walkways may be slippery even when dry.
  • Access to the Acropolis requires travelers to navigate a steep hill including uneven stairs with no railing.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months (June-September), travelers can expect heatwaves with temperatures consistently above 90F.
  • In July and August, Greece experiences Meltemi, or strong winds, which can make for rough ferry rides.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!

  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.

  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which include ferries and flights.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights. Please note that your included on-tour flights may have more restrictive baggage limits.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels, airports, and boarding ferries.

  • Greece’s warm climate ensures a constant supply of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Salads served with aromatic olive oil, feta cheese, and oregano are plentiful. Simple grilled fish and meat are integral to Greek cuisine, as are squid and octopus. Don’t miss the spinach and cheese pies, called spanakopita.
  • On the tour extension, Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese, and pepper) and supplì (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily’s arancini).
  • For more authentic meals on the tour extension, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Greece is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 7 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • Italy, on the tour extension, is 1 hour ahead of GMT and 6 hours ahead of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 7pm in Greece (and 6pm in Italy).
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.

Best time for travel greece island hopper featuring athens, mykonos and santorini.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Greece Island Hopper tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

On Tour Air Included

  • The cost of all internal flights on tour or within an extension are included into the total tour cost on our website and brochures.
  • Purchasing internal flights through Collette is now required on tours where applicable.

  • The cost displayed is based on availability at the time of booking.

Extend your tour longer with a 3-night stay in Istanbul, Turkey’s most popular city. Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures and legendary architecture. As the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, walk in the footsteps of centuries of travelers before you. From the towering Hagia Sophia to the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, you’ll find an indescribable blend of nostalgia and modernity. • Athens - Istanbul, Turkey
  • Fly to Istanbul,* Turkey’s most popular city. Considered to be the bridge between the East and the West, Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures, complicated history, and legendary architecture. The city was the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires – which is seen through its blend of times-gone-by nostalgia and ever-evolving modernity. This evening, kick-start your exploration of Istanbul by sampling Turkish cuisine during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Discover the city with a local guide. Start your morning at the famous Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time it was built, this massive cathedral was the largest in the world. Continue on to the Blue Mosque,** where vibrant blue tiles line the building’s opulent interior walls. This morning also includes a visit to Topkapi Palace, the main residence of sultans of the Ottoman Empire. After free time for lunch, continue exploring Istanbul with your local expert. Make your way through the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, surrounding yourself with artisan crafts, buzzing energy, and exciting vendors. Enjoy an evening at leisure.
  • Start your day with a relaxing cruise on the Bosphorus, and see the city from a different vantage point. The rest of the day is yours! Immerse yourself in the flavors of the Cycladic Islands during a tour of Mykonos’ culinary gems. Begin the morning at a local farm where you learn about the traditions and history of cheese making, a craft that in Mykonos achieves almost the status of a local art form with secrets passed down through the generations. Sample Xinotiro, Kopanisti, and Vrasto cheeses and freshly-made yogurt, all produced at the farm. Later, explore more flavors of the island at a local bakery before visiting Ano Mera, a traditional rural village with picturesque whitewashed chapels and iconic blue trimmings.

Make the most of a day at leisure and see all that Greece has to offer with an island-hopping adventure! Set sail for the tiny islet of Nea Kameni – an uninhabited island that is formed on an active volcano. Make your way up the side of the still-active volcano with your local guide, pausing at the top of the crater for unparalleled views. After exploring, return to the boat to set off for your next destination – Palea Kameni. Similar to Nea Kameni, this islet is also of volcanic descent. Jump into the water and swim to the island’s rejuvenating hot springs, where you will find ethereal sulfuric waters and therapeutic mud - or choose to relax on the boat. Continue on to Thirassia, an authentic island that embodies the traditional culture of Greece. Enjoy a Greek buffet onboard and take in an unparalleled view of the island as you dine. After dinner, make a stop close to Oia as the sun sets. Marvel as the sky turns shades of orange and gold before sailing back to port.

Take a step into the past with a half-day excursion to the island of Delos, the fabled birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. After a quick 30-minute boat ride, allow your guide to introduce you to this sprawling UNESCO site. See how the Greek myths intertwine with prehistoric ruins, passing through narrow streets from the Hellenistic age. Tour the awe-inspiring House of Dionysus, a relic from the 4th-century BC containing ancient mosaics and preserved columns. Peruse the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Lake, and the guardian Naxian Lions with your guide before enjoying time to explore independently. Take in views of the Sacred Island of Delos as you ferry back to Mykonos.

Join a local expert in Athens and explore the city's world-renowned sites.

Greece is THE land of ancient sites and architectural treasures: the Acropolis in Athens, the amphitheater of Epidaurus, the reconstructed palace at Knossos, the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, and frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete. But don't expect a visit there to be a sober study of the ancient world, the Greek propensity for partying dates back to Dionysus. Then there are 1400 islands to explore. Greece is much more than what you were taught at school or the predictable summer image of glorious sunsets and sandy beaches.

Santorini is considered to be the most sought after place for a romantic getaway in Greece, since there are not many places in the world where you can enjoy exquisitely clear waters while perched on the rim of a massive active volcano in the middle of the sea! Fira, the picturesque capital of the island, is perched high up on the edge of the Caldera, looking like a marvelous painting. Some of the villages are cosmopolitan some more peaceful; they are surrounded by vast vineyards; whitewashed cliff-top towns with castles affording amazing views out over the Aegean. Soaking up the villages' distinctive traditional atmosphere is a very rewarding experience. Athens – Santorini – Mykonos: 7 Days In Greece Itinerary

The Athens – Santorini – Mykonos itinerary is very popular for first time visitors who have a week in Greece. Here are some travel tips to help you plan a 7 day Greek vacation.

greece tours athens mykonos santorini

Plan your Greece trip to Athens – Mykonos – Santorini

Santorini, Mykonos and Athens are three of the best known destinations in Greece. Millions of people from all around the world visit every year to enjoy the ancient history, the beautiful, diverse landscapes, the delicious cuisine, and the overall vibe.

The three destinations are very different from each other. Athens , the capital city of Greece, is renowned for the ancient sites and vibrant city center.

Mykonos is best known for its fantastic sandy beaches, luxury beach clubs and nightlife.

Santorini is famous for the volcanic landscapes, white-washed churches with blue domes, and iconic sunsets.

A blue dome church in Santorini

There’s various combinations of the Athens – Mykonos – Santorini itinerary you can put together. However, it can be quite complicated!

As an Athenian who’s traveled a lot around Greece, I’d love to share with you some local advice, so that you can make the most out of your vacation.

My first tip is that there’s little point in visiting Mykonos during the off-season, which is roughly from November to March / April. Most businesses are closed, and even the nearby UNESCO site of Ancient Delos is not open at this time of year.

So, here are some travel tips and suggestions for your 7 days in Athens, Santorini and Mykonos!

Where are Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in Greece?

Greece is a small country in south Europe, close to Italy and Turkey. It’s divided into mainland Greece, and various groups of islands, known as “the Greek islands”.

Athens, the Greek capital, is located on mainland Greece. Mykonos and Santorini are two of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, and they are located to the southeast of Athens. Here is a map, and here is a guide on where is Mykonos .

A map of Athens, Santorini and Mykonos

Santorini, Mykonos and Athens all have international airports as well as ferry ports, and they are very well connected. Here is how to travel between them.

How to travel between Athens – Mykonos – Santorini

You can either fly or take a ferry between Athens and each of the popular Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini.

You should note that there are no direct flights between Santorini and Mykonos. The best way to travel between Mykonos and Santorini is by ferry.

The best order to visit Santorini, Mykonos and Athens

In my opinion, the best possible order to minimize travel time, would be to land at Athens International Airport, fly directly to Santorini, then take a ferry to Mykonos.

From Mykonos, you then have a choice of a ferry or a flight back to Athens, which will be your last destination. This way you will make the most of your time, and enjoy a hassle-free trip.

If you are flying to Greece from Europe, check for direct flights to Santorini. This way, you could potentially arrive in Santorini, and return to your own country from Athens.

Towards the end of this travel guide, I’ve gone into detail about flying to Greece, flights from Athens to Santorini and Mykonos, and your various ferry options. It is definitely worth spending some time looking at this section to get your head around the logistics of putting the itinerary together!!

How long to spend in each destination

With 7 days in Greece, I would suggest that you spend 3 days in Santorini, 2 days in Mykonos, and the rest of your time in Athens.

This is the perfect balance if you want to enjoy the best of all three destinations. In addition, if you are jet-lagged after your trip, you can relax at your Santorini hotel room and take it easy.

Accommodation in Santorini – Mykonos – Athens

And now, let’s have a quick look at the best areas to stay in Santorini, Mykonos and Athens.

In my experience traveling in Greece, Booking.com offers more properties and, actually, better value than AirBnB or other similar platforms.

Where to stay in Santorini

Santorini is a crescent shaped island. The east side is full of black sand beaches, while the west side is right on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the sunset. If, like most visitors, you want to stay at a sunset view hotel in Santorini, you will have to stay somewhere on the west coast.

The best areas to stay in Santorini if you want to enjoy the stunning views and sunsets from your hotel are the famous Oia, Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli. Fira and Oia are more crowded, whereas Firostefani and Imerovigli are quieter.

Santorini Greece

Before you book your Santorini hotel, please read the hotel descriptions very carefully. Some of these properties are built at the edge of the cliff, so you’d have to climb several sets of stairs to get to your room!

Here are a few great hotels in Santorini with sea view:

Oia is the most famous sunset spot in Santorini, and it’s located at the north end of the island. It can get very busy with cruise visitors, so if you are traveling during summer you might find it too crowded. Regardless, here are some top-rated hotels in Oia:

  • Aspaki by Grand Maisons
  • Katikies Villa Santorini
  • Art Maisons Oia Castle

Hotels in Imerovigli Santorini

Imerovigli is my favourite area with sunset views of Santorini, as it’s quiet and yet not too far from Fira, the capital. These are some of the best hotels in Imerovigli:

  • Atoles Retreat
  • Iliovasilema Hotel
  • Dreams Luxury Suites
  • Absolute Bliss
  • Altana Heritage Suites
  • SantAnna Luxury Suites
  • Starlight Luxury Seaside Villa & Suites

Hotels in Firostefani Santorini

Firostefani is just a short walking distance from Fira, so it’s ideal if you want to be close to the main town but have some peace and quiet.

  • Homeric Poems
  • Dana Vilas and Infinity Suites
  • Exclusive Suites

Hotels in Fira Santorini

Fira is the main settlement in Santorini, and where buses depart from to all other areas. If you want to stay close to all the museums, shopping, action and nightlife, Fira is your best bet.

  • Caldera Cliff Illusion
  • Astro Palace Hotels and Suites
  • Celestia Grand
  • Aroma Suites

Finally, if you prefer to stay at one of the beach resorts, look for accommodation at the areas on the east coast, like Kamari, Perivolos and Perissa. You won’t have the sunset views, but you’ll see some pretty amazing sunrises!

Where to stay in Mykonos

Mykonos has one main town, called Mykonos town, and several beach resorts. There is plenty of accommodation everywhere on the island, so it all comes down to your preferences.

Remember that Mykonos is an exclusive island. Accommodation prices are among the highest in Greece, but they go hand in hand with the levels of luxury and service. Here are some of the best hotels in Mykonos:

Hotels in Mykonos Town

  • Villa Anema
  • Belvedere Mykonos
  • Bonzoe Homes and Villas

Hotels close to beaches in Mykonos island

  • Santa Marina – Ornos
  • Kensho – Ornos
  • Mykonos Grand Hotel & Resort – Agios Ioannis
  • Alissachni – Psarou
  • Mykonian Mews Luxury Suites – Psarou / Platys Gialos
  • Lyo Boutique Hotel – Super Paradise
  • Manu Mykonos – Agia Anna

Where to stay in Athens

The best areas to stay in central Athens include Plaka , Koukaki, Monastiraki, Psiri and Thissio. These areas are walking distance from most of the famous attractions such as the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and the Ancient Agora.

Of course, you should expect these neighborhoods to be busy and vibrant, especially during the peak season! Here are a few great properties to stay in central Athens:

  • Triple A – Ideal for a couple, close to lots of tavernas, restaurants, bars and nightlife
  • Auntie’s Home – Fantastic location for a party of up to 5 people
  • Dreamin Athens – Another great choice, they also have bigger apartments for up to 6 people
  • The Marble Suites – A bright, spacious suite right in the middle of everything
  • Fos Residential Apartments – Some of them offer an exceptional view of the Acropolis
  • Acro+Polis – If you don’t mind a few stairs!

Please note that there are certain areas in central Athens that many visitors consider to be less safe, such as Omonia, Metaxourgio and Exarhia. It’s true that these areas can feel intimidating to a certain degree. In addition, they are further out from the main sights, so you might prefer to avoid them, given your limited time in Athens.

Greece travel logistics

So, this was your example 7-day itinerary for Greece and where to stay. And now, as promised, here is some detailed information on the flights and ferries you’ll need to get around in Greece during your week-long vacation.

Flying to Greece

International flights arrive at the Athens airport year-round. There are flight connections with the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Santorini and Mykonos also have international airports. During spring, summer and autumn, there are direct flights to these famous islands from many European countries. There are, however, no direct international flights from USA, Canada or Australia into Santorini or Mykonos.

Arriving in Athens

Passengers arriving from the US, Australia or Canada, will often land in Athens. If this is the case, my suggestion is to immediately fly out to Santorini, and spend your time in Athens at the end of your trip. This way, if there are any ferry delays or other unforeseen circumstances, you won’t risk missing your flight back home.

When booking your onward flight, allow for at least 2.5 – 3 hours for customs clearance and other airport procedures, especially if you have checked luggage.

Tip: If you are flying to Greece from outside Europe, you can also look for flights from any European city to one of the islands. For example, you could fly from the USA to London, catch an onward flight to Santorini, take a ferry to Mykonos, and finally make your way back to Athens. Or you can find flights to Mikonos Greece, go to Santorini afterwards, then fly to Athens.

Flights between Athens and Santorini / Athens and Mykonos

There are two companies flying on both the Athens – Santorini and Athens – Mykonos routes: Aegean / Olympic, and Sky Express. In addition, the low-cost Ryanair flies to Santorini, and Volotea flies to Mykonos.

Each of these flights takes about 40-50 minutes – though sometimes there may be delays, so you should definitely allow some extra time. You can check all available routes on Skyscanner , and book your air tickets directly on the company websites.

You can fly from Athens to Santorini in under an hour

Which domestic carrier should I choose in Greece?

As a rule, Aegean and Sky Express offer more comfort and better service. Aegean has received multiple awards over the years, and is generally considered the best Greek airline.

Ryanair and Volotea might offer better budget options, but some of the add-on costs are unclear to begin with. In addition, they often fly out at awkward times of the day.

One thing you should know is that there are several types of airplanes flying the Athens – Santorini and the Athens – Mykonos routes. Whichever company you choose, have a look at the seating areas / airplane specs before you book your plane tickets.

Some planes have four seats in a row, which means two seats either side of the aisle. These planes are much smaller, and can feel claustrophobic for some people. There are also planes with six seats in a row – three per side. These are bigger, and feel more comfortable overall.

Every airline has several luggage options, so make sure you choose the one which is appropriate for you. Airlines can be very strict about weight limits, especially when the flights are full. However, if you are visiting Greece in summer, you can comfortably travel with hand luggage only.

Here is my guide on what to pack for Greece for each season. Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring comfy walking shoes for our cobblestone streets – here’s why I personally love Teva sandals !

Ferries from Athens to Santorini and Mykonos

Athens has two main ferry ports, Piraeus and Rafina. This means that you could choose to take a ferry to Santorini or Mykonos if you wanted. There are ferry connections year-round.

There are many daily ferries during the summer months, which is the peak season in Greece. You will also have a lot of choice during spring and autumn, which is the shoulder season. In winter, which is the off-season, there are fewer routes.

You can check all ferry routes and book your tickets here: Ferryscanner

Ferry routes between Athens, Mykonos and Santorini

Choosing a ferry in Greece can be mind-boggling if you’ve never visited Greece before. This guide will walk you through the entire process!

Generally speaking, there are two types of ferries: the fast ferries / high speed ferries, and the slow ferries.

Most travelers with limited time in Greece usually prefer to take the high speed ferries. Here is an indication of how long the fastest ferries take:

  • Athens to Santorini – 4 hours 45 minutes (flight time: 50 minutes)
  • Santorini to Mykonos – 2 hours (there is no flight from Santorini to Mykonos)
  • Mykonos to Athens – 2 hours 10 minutes to Rafina port (flight time: 50 minutes)

While there are usually multiple ferries per day, tickets can get sold out. If you are traveling during the peak season, you should definitely book your ferry tickets in advance .

You can take a Seajet ferry from Santorini to Mykonos

Passenger-only SeaJet ferry in Greece

Which are the best Greek ferries to travel on?

When you compare ferries, you will notice that they have many different features. Here’s a quick overview of things to consider.

To begin with, you’ll notice that the fastest ferries are much more expensive than the slow ferries. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, it’s really a question of time vs money.

However, not all of the fast ferries are born equal. Broadly speaking, there are two types of fast ferries – those that carry passengers and vehicles, and those that only carry passengers.

The passenger-only ferries are smaller, and are generally less comfortable to travel on, as they can be affected by the strong meltemi winds , which are common in summer. This can result in a very bumpy ride, and it won’t be enjoyable for anyone, especially if you get seasick easily.

In case of very strong winds, the ferry ride may be delayed, or even cancelled. I’ve personally had very few ferries cancelled in my entire life, but it can happen. This is why you shouldn’t book a ferry to Athens on the same day that you are flying back home.

You should know that ferry delays are fairly common – I’ve had several ferry delays of 1-2 hours in the past, and even longer. Again, this is usually due to the winds. Hopefully it won’t happen to you, but leave yourself enough wiggle room, just in case.

Best ferries on the Santorini – Mykonos route

Let’s take a look at the popular route Santorini – Mykonos. On most years, there are usually 7-8 ferries per day , and they are all high speed ferries – no slow ferries run on this routes.

As you can see from the table below, some of these ferries carry vehicles, while others don’t. Passengers-only ferries are indicated by a car symbol crossed with a red line.

If you are traveling from Santorini to Mykonos in 2024, it’s best to take one of the bigger ferries that carry vehicles, such as the Worldchampion Jet or the Power Jet.

Best ferries Mykonos - Santorini

Note that all of these high speed ferries have designated seats, and all seating is indoors. There is no deck area, and you are not allowed to sit outdoors. However, there is air-conditioning, a restaurant / snack bar, comfortable seating, toilets and more amenities that will make your journey more comfortable.

If you have heavy luggage, you will be asked to leave it at designated areas near the entrance of the ferry. While I’ve actually never heard of luggage being lost on a ferry, please make sure you don’t leave any of your valuables behind.

Last tip: If you are traveling on a windy day, consider taking some Dramamine pills or ginger tablets, to avoid getting nausea.

What else should I do if I can spend longer in Greece?

Travelers with an extra day or two could allocate them to whichever destination appeals the most. Have a look at these other travel guides that will help you decide:

  • How many days in Santorini do you really need
  • A wonderful experience kayaking in Mykonos
  • How to spend three days in Athens
  • Best things to do in Athens

If you can spend even longer in Greece, e.g. two weeks, you could add another Greek island in the Cyclades to your itinerary. Some of the most beautiful Greek islands include Tinos , the neighboring island of Mykonos, Andros , Naxos or Milos .

If you want to see another part of Greece, you could visit one of the Dodecanese islands, like Rhodes, or the Ionian islands, like Corfu. To get there from Mykonos, you would have to catch a flight to Athens, and then an onward flight to the other island.

FAQs about the Athens – Santorini – Mykonos itinerary

Here are a few questions that readers have asked in the past:

How do I get from Athens to Mykonos and Santorini?

There are two ways from Athens to either Mykonos or Santorini: by flight from the Athens International airport, or by ferry from either Piraeus or Rafina port in Athens. The best way to get from Mykonos to Santorini is by highspeed ferry.

Is it better to go to Mykonos or Santorini first from Athens?

If your first stop is Athens, it doesn’t really matter which of the two islands you visit first. It’s best to check all available ferry schedules in advance of your trip, and see the timings that suit you the most. With that said, consider visiting Santorini first, followed by Mykonos, and leaving Athens for last – this combination minimizes travel time.

How far is Athens from Santorini and Mykonos?

How many days do you need in Athens Mykonos and Santorini?

Anywhere from 7 to 10 days is a good amount of time to experience Athens, Mykonos and Santorini. If you only have 6 days or less, it’s best to stick to just two destinations, for example Athens and Santorini.

What is the best way to travel between Greek islands?

The best – and often the only – way to travel between the Greek islands is by ferry. There are hundreds of different types of ferries connecting the Greek islands. However, note that certain island combinations would require a mix of flights, or flights and ferries.

What’s the best way to plan an island hopping trip in Greece?

When to visit Greece

The best times to visit Greece are April–June and September–October. The weather is mild, and most places have few crowds. High season is late June to early September, and prices will reflect that as will the crowds, the number of cruise ships and accommodation availability.

Summer is still great, especially for beach time and in some of the lesser-known spots. The water is warm, there are blue skies every day and a fun holiday atmosphere.

Best beach and swimming weather: June to September Best sightseeing weather: March to June and September/October

IMPORTANT TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR GREECE

Basic facts about greece.

Greece is known as Hellas with its official name being the   Hellenic Republic  “Helliniki Dimokratia”.  It consists of 132,000 sq kilometres of land including 227 inhabited islands. The population is just over 10 million people.

The religion is East Orthodoxy ( Christian) , they drive on the right-hand side of the road and the calling code is +30.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN GREECE

Greece has many   incredible destinations   and is considered home to some of the most beautiful and interesting sites in the world. There are 19 UNESCO   World Heritage Sites   with another 16 under consideration.

There are 6 island groups –   the Cyclades , the   Dodecanese , the   Saronic Islands , the   Sporades Islands , the   Northern Aegean Islands,   the   Ionian Islands , and   Crete,   so island hopping in the Greek Islands might be popular but it does require some research, as most of these groups do not connect with each other by ferry or flights.

There are also some incredible things to see on the mainland including   Athens   – ancient sites like   Delphi   and   Olympia   as well as places of considerable natural beauty and wonder such as   Meteora   and   Mt Athos . The northern city of   Thessaloniki   is also wonderful with some incredible sites and attractions close by. It’s also very affordable too.

The   Peloponnese peninsula   is becoming more popular and is thought by many to be the ‘real Greece’. It is one of our favourite parts of Greece, in fact anywhere really.

HOW TO GET AROUND THE GREEK ISLANDS

The train and   bus network   is not as modern or efficient as those in say, France or Italy but the   Ferry network   is probably the most extensive and effective in the world.

In Athens taxi drivers, like many cities, can be a bit hit and miss so it pays to have the details of a trusted one. For private transfers, we use and recommend   CATTaxi   and if you use the Promo code “GTS” when you book through   this link   you will receive a further   10% off . If you do catch a taxi make sure the meter is on!

For   port and ferry transfers   you can book via   this article   too.

For Ferries we use   Ferryhopper  and we invariably   hire a car   at each destination even if it’s just for a day or two.

GREEK CULTURE

The Culture in Greece is rich and varied and is over 6000 years old.

There are a number of things that make it so unique including the world-famous Greek Hospitality but there’s also the unique architecture,   food , dancing, music and more. The Greek Language is one of the oldest in the world and it always pays to know   a few key phrases   for your trip.

We have a lot of resources including   a whole page on the Greek Culture   as well as a   Recipe page , and an   article full of reading suggestions , one with our   recommended Greek Playlist   and another about   movies set in Greece   as well.

If you’re a history buff then be sure to check out this   article on Greek Mythology   and where to see the most amazing archeological sites.

Santorini – Mykonos – Athens

This article focuses on an itinerary that ticks the most boxes for the most people with these three destinations and can usually be done between May and November. Mykonos is a very summer focused destination and outside of thuse months many things are closed.

Why this sequence?

We always recommend doing Athens at the end, if possible. This ensures you are back on the mainland well before your international flight home and allows for ferry or flight delays or cancellations. Athens is also best for shopping so do it at the end and don’t lug everything around the islands with you.

Our recommended minimum duration would be:

Santorini – 3 nights

Mykonos – 3 nights

Athens – 3 nights  (although you could spend a month or more)

Looking for laid-back islands that are more family oriented? Swap Mykonos for Naxos .

Looking for off-beat islands with no airports?   Swap Santorini and Mykonos for   Sifnos   and   Folegandros .

Not interested in the beach but love culture? Stick with Santorini but add   Syros   or   Hydra   ( also great in the off-season)

Visiting in the off-season?   (November to April): stick to the   Mainland

Santorini – 2 to 4 days

10 days in Greece

Santorini is a bucket list destination for most people and for good reason.

Despite the cruise ships and the crowds, it remains one of those places that not only meets your expectations but probably exceeds it. The views truly are the stuff of legends and it is little wonder it is so popular with honeymooners.

It can get a bit crazy when the cruise ships come in each day so a room with a pool and terrace makes for a great escape for an afternoon siesta and sundowners. When you re-emerge for dinner most of the tourists will have floated away!

We love to stay in Oia which is considered the most picturesque village, although a lot of people also enjoyed Imerovigli which is about a 20 minute walk along the nice flat footpath that runs along the Caldera seam.

There are a surprising amount of things to do on Santorini with  beaches, wineries, hot springs, great shopping and some of the worlds most iconic and photographed sunsets.

How to get to Santorini

We always recommend you try and fly straight through to your furthest island, in this case, Santorini. Allow at least two hours on the ground in Athens airport between your arrival and your domestic flight and book with Aegean Airways/Olympic or Sky Express, both Greek-owned and run.

The small international airport has several flights from Athens a day as well as regular flights in summer from other European destinations like Rome and England. Check flight schedules HERE.

There are also many ferries each day, year round. Most service either the Western or Eastern Cyclades Islands and some will go on to Crete.

Book ferry tickets HERE.

TIP : Both the port and the airport in Santorini can be quite nuts in summer and there can be long waits for the cablecar, taxis and donkeys . It REALLY pays to have a private transfer waiting for you!

Where to stay in Santorini :

For couples : Ducato Di Oia ( adults only) suites in Oia or Above Blue Suites in Imerovigli for more isolation and at a lower price point.

Armeni Luxury Villas are also more private than many and  Cave Suite Oia is another. Aloia Villas face the other way from the church domes but are really quite amazing, as is Ducato Di Oia.

Imerovigli is also a great choice. It’s north of Fira and one of the highest points of the island so the views are quite spectacular. It’s very popular with couples and has lots of upscale hotels and restaurants including Kasimatis by La Perla which is adults-only and Altana Cliffside Villas where you get your own plunge pool.  Canaves Oia Epitome is one of the most iconic luxury hotels in Europe and is incredibly romantic. Aspa Villas are great value for money and most rooms have hot tubs.

For families and groups : White Harmony Suites have 2 bedroom suites or Theoxenia Boutique Hotel has quad rooms and is not far from, dare I say it, McDonald’s. Doukas Caldera Suites are also hard to beat ( with 2 sofa beds), or Altemar Suites have 1 and 2-bedroom suites that can sleep up to 4 and have jacuzzis on the terrace with great views.

In Oia we have had a great stay with our family at Armeni Village and Myst Boutique Hotel is also worth checking out. It’s a little out of town but that’s why it is more affordable.

If you want to be right near a beach then Crystal Blue in Kamari is great or Damma Luxury Villas have a wonderful 4-bedroom beachfront villa that can sleep 8. Tristhenia Hotel or Anezina Villas in Perissa will be the most budget friendly of all.

Solo : Kivotos in Imerovigli for a splurge or Abelonas Retreat on a tight budget. For something a bit different stay at Pyrgos 1870 winery or in the authentic medieval village of Pyrgos at Aroma Cavas Apartments or Skyfall Suites (adults only) .

Where to eat in Santorini

Breakfast : this will likely be included in your hotel tariff. Otherwise, Our Corner in Fira and La Scala on Oia are great choices.

Lunch : Lefkes Taverna in Oia is hard to beat for food or service. It often books out well in advance. Some of the Wineries such as Santos are great for lunch but be sure to book head there too. Other spots we love are Aeolos Taverna in Akrotiri or Akro Beach Bar at Black Beach.

Dinner: Santorini Mou in Oia or Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna in Ammoudi Bay are wonderful. For stunning clifftop views check out Lycabettus , Lauda and Strogoli for special occassions and Melitini , Thalami and Pelekanos for traditional meals.

You also MUST book a sunset dinner cruise on the Caldera for one of the nights.

Drinks : PK Cocktail Bar is amazing and check out V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar in Fira or Le Moustache Pool Lounge  too.

Things to do in Santorini

  • explore the maze of streets in Oia including Panagia Platsani Church & Oia Castle
  • a half day tour of the island
  • tour the world renowned wineries with a sommelier
  • do wine tasting AND a cooking class
  • swim at Black Beach, Red Beach and Kamari Beaches
  • visit authentic Pyrgos village and see what Santorini is like for long time locals
  • do a sunset fishing trip with dinner and drinks
  • attend a ‘traditional’ Greek wedding !
  • have a professional photographic session done – hard to beat the backdrop
  • or do a ‘ Flying Dress’ photography session – the hottest thing on Instagram!

How to get to Mykonos

There are regular ferries between Santorini and Mykonos, although a very limited schedule in winter. In Summer there can be over a dozen daily with most stopping via Naxos, Paros and often Ios islands. The faster catamaran ferries are the quickest but can be less reliable and more unpleasant in bad weather. We go out of our way to book the Bluestar to Naxos or Paros and change there ( sadly Bluestar does not service Mykonos).

Where to stay in Mykonos

It can be confusing trying to work out where to stay on Mykonos. Some of the most popular attractions are spread across the island and transport can be challenging.

If you’re looking for a home base that will allow you to easily explore other parts of the island without your own vehicle, Mykonos Town may be perfect.

Ornos is also a popular choice especially for families as it has a wide, usually calm, beach.

For couples : Check out   Boheme  with its ultra-cool Boho interiors in Mykonos Town. Not far from there is  Portobello Boutique Hotel   which is a lovely mid-range option.

In Ornos it is hard to beat   Mykonos Blanc while   Myconian Ambassador Relais & Chateaux in Platys Gialos is one of the most popular, and iconic, hotels in Greece.

Mykonos Drops   is also a beautiful mid-range hotel that has a very high standard of finishes and service at a great price point.

For families and groups : Villa Kampani  is right on the Old Harbour and can sleep 8 people in stunning, sophisticated luxury or, if you want to stay right on Nammos beach and live like the rich and famous patrons then  Villa Santa Katerina  is the perfect luxury option for you. Sleeping 12 people with an infinity pool and spectacular views over the whole bay this would be a vacation to remember!

Solo : Lyo Boutique Hotel  is our pick of the hotels in Super Paradise while budget travellers will love  Andriani’s Guest House  which is in a great location and excellent value.

Where to eat and drink in mYkonos

Breakfast : Breakfast is always included in hotel tariffs ( amazing ones too!). If you have chosen an Airbnb you will have to budget to self-cater or go out & many places will not open before 10am. The Liberty Breakfast Room is fantastic as is Cosmo Cafe and El Burro.

Lunch : Lunch by the beach is part of the reason people love Mykonos. Being able to swim, sunbathe, ride on a jetski and then wander into the taverna or have food bought to your sunbed is Mykonos 101.

If it’s just a meal you are after then Alesta View has amazing views across the island or Kastro’s in Mykonos Town is an institution. For cheap and cheerful eats To Maereio and Amades Eat Local are great or grab a Souvlaki at Sakis, Souvlaki Story or Lounda Pikantiki.

There is also a great sushi place at Super Paradise called Lyo and a fried chicken place near the airport called Airfast Chicken.

Our all-time favourite place to have lunch on Mykonos is Kiki’s Tavern in the north of the island near Agios Sostis Beach. Great food, great views, great service and good prices. This is a MUST DO!

Mykonos BeachClubs

Beachclubs such as Scorpios , Nammos , Jackie O’s and Super Paradise are the stuff of legends and are famous ( or infamous) worldwide. These are places where you come for lunch and a swim and leave at sunrise. There are international DJ’s and crazy beach parties in summer at all of them. If you want a sunbed you will need to book in advance.

Dinner: When the sun goes down lots of the beachfront restaurants become lovely places to sit under the stars. We love Yialo Yialo and Avli Tou Thodori in Platis Gialos or Nikolas Seafood Tavern on Agia Anna Beach. Hippie Fish on Agios Ioannis Beach is world-famous and has amazing sunsets too ( book this very early!).

In Ornos Appaggio and Kostantis are fantastic while in Mykonos Town D’Angelo and Captains are institutions. It’s also worth the drive up to Limnios Tavern not just for the food but also the amazing views.

Vegans must check out Koukoumi Vegan Restaurant in the hills above Kalo Livadi Beach.

Drinks : There’s no shortage of bars on the most famous party island in Greece. In Mykonos Town Katerinas, Scarpa Bar, Galleraki, Bao’s, Negrita and Caprice are the ones you’ve all seen in photos lined up alone Little Venice in the colourful waterfront huts. These are also some of the most expensive bars but one drink wont hurt, right?

Nearby Notorious and 54 Cocktail & Sunset Lounge are worth a look. Elsewhere on the island Pasaji and 180 Sunset Bar are great too, but you need to book well in advance in summer.

Late into the night places like Queen of Mykonos and Astra kick on well into daylight while Void, Scandinavian Bar and Addiction are full on nightclubs.

Things to do in Mykonos

  • Visit the sacred neighbouring island of Delos , birthplace of Apollo
  •  Hang out at Little Venice
  • Take photos with the iconic windmills
  • Spend the day celebrity spotting at the world-famous beachclubs ( see above)
  • Do a cruise around Delos and Rhenia islands

Athens – 3 days (or more)

10 days in Greece

Athens is the capital of Greece and home to some of the most iconic and important historical sites and monuments in the world.

It’s one of the oldest cities in the world and considered one of the most fascinating. You could easily spend a month in Athens and only scratch the surface so be sure to allow at least a few days here, and always make sure your last night in Greece is back on the mainland before your flight home, even if its at an airport hotel or close by.

Apart from the many things you can do in Athens including  great shopping, incredible food, and all the ancient sites there is also great nightlife with a plethora of bars, tavernas, and clubs to choose from. There are a lot of new hotels and rooftop restaurants many with incredible Acropolis views .

The Acropolis Museum is world-class and needs to be enjoyed either before or after you visit the Acropolis .

How to get to Athens

From Mykonos, you can either fly or ferry to Athens, it’s really a personal choice. They take roughly the same time door-to-door and are often a similar price.

We also love Athenian Residences in Psyri ( our favourite neighbourhood) which have a very romantic vibe, and a swimming pool!

For families and groups :

Great hotels that have one and two bedrooms suites and apartments include Met34 , Athens Ikon and The Gem Society . All are in excellent central locations and all include breakfast too!

Auntie’s Home in Plaka is a fantastic 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment with a huge terrace and amazing Acropolis views too. I can’t believe it’s so cheap actually!

If you want to stay in Psyri check out A.P. Acropolis View Apartments . A lot of group members have loved it there and you can book a Suite that has its own Hammam with a connecting 2 bedroom family room. Amazing views too!

If none of those work out have a look at Chloe Boutique Apartments that are right in the middle of Pysri and Plaka. They have a 4 bedrooms apartments that is very good value too.

Solo : I love to stay at Ergon House when I’m on my own. It’s across from Zillers and part of the famous Ergon food emporiums . They have even let me use my room until my 6 pm International flight at no extra charge!

Another great option is gorgeous Monsieur Didot and beautiful, chic Shila , both small, intimate and in quiet, leafy streets close to everything.

Where to eat in Athens

Breakfast : If you are staying in a hotel breakfast ( and usually a very delicious one) is likely to be included in your hotel tariff. Otherwise, the Brunch Factory does incredible meals for breakfast and lunch.

Lunch : Nikitas in Psiri for cheap and cheerful homecooked meals or Kostas for amazing Gyros. Cafe Melina is one of the prettiest spots in the Plaka or Gyros Pou Gyrevis for fantastic Gyros near the Acropolis Museum.

Dinner : Maiandros or Athinaikon in Monastiraki/Syntagma. We also love Yiasemi in Plaka ( the much-photographed steps) or Lithos Taverna in Psiri does my favourite Moussaka. And book yourself at least one night at an amazing Michelin Starred and/or Rooftop restaurant , for a truly unforgettable night!

Drinks : enjoy Sunset drinks at the Grand Bretagne Rooftop bar, 360 Cocktail Bar, A fo Athens Roof top bar ( be sure to book this as its small) MS Roof Garden or Thea Terrace. The Clumsies is one of Europes most famous bars as is Brettos. We also love to catch some jazz at The Speakeasy or a quite drink at Drunk Sinatra.

If it’s lively nightlife you are after the whole of Kolokotroni Street and Agias Irinis Square is where you find the best of Athens bar and club scene.

Everything and everyone is around you, Myths, Legends and the grandeur of the 5 th century BC which with the help of our guide will excite your imagination. We will rewrite history and you will have the leading role. The first light of the day vows to the glory of the magnificent Parthenon. The exceptional architectural structure that is considered the focal point of the known “Western Civilization”. That is why your private tour with our guide starts on the famous hill of Acropolis. Erechteion, Propylaea, Mars Hill, the Herodeion Theater are some of the sites that you can visit on this wonderful trip. You will tour at classical landmarks of Athens such as the columns of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium which hosted the first Olympic Games. You will learn about Syntagma square (the Constitution square) where the Guard shake with their synchronized steps the marble square during every Guard change in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. It is like wanting to say “thank you” for everything he offered our country and he is not forgotten. You will tour the glass museum of Acropolis and walk in Plaka “the neighbor of the gods”. You will wander in the Ancient Agora which was the epicenter of the political and philosophical life of Ancient Athens. The institution of Democracy was born there a lot of centuries ago. We will climb the hill of Lycabettus to enjoy the breathtaking view as you see the city of Athens stretching out like a white carpet to the edge of the sea. The day is complete and we will return to the hotel to get some rest. Tomorrow, a new experience awaits you….

Day 3, Tasting trip of flavors and Athenian Riviera

A wonderful day today too, our guide will accompany you to a tasting trip combined with strolling in the historical town and Monastiraki where the flea market with all kinds of things is. Old and new, furniture, antiques, traditional uniforms and coins of the drachma which was the currency before euro. People wander around you endlessly strolling towards the central market that sells fresh local meat and fish. A bit further you can smell the aroma of herbs, spice and oregano of the Greek countryside. We move towards Psiri square where small taverns await you ready to give you savor and aroma of Greece. Gastronomical delights from the traditional cuisine that traveled through time and was passed on from generation to generation. The traditional dishes are full of food, you cannot get enough of the traditional varieties. You will taste the blessed olive oil, honey and yogurt. Delicious dishes where the eggplant coexists with potatoes in Mousaka, tomatoes are stuffed with rice and the fresh cabbage embraces the mashed beef meat in Ntolmades. Who can refuse the roasted lamb and resist a portion of souvlaki gyros of pork? The food is made with care and affection, for sure you are looking forward to the next meal. You return to the hotel to get some rest and in the afternoon our guide will pick you up for new experiences.

The time has passed and our driver will pick you up to start a wonderful tour. We drive along Athens Riviera looking at the deep blue of the Aegean Sea and the fishing boats on which the waves bounce off. Some skerries a bit further invite us to admire them and in no time we have reached Cape Sounion. You will visit the temple of Poseidon that stands high and mighty on the rock beaten by the gods of the wind and the saltiness of the sea. A wonderful moment is when the sun disappears embracing the sea and the light of the Attica sky comes from the stars. Lunch in a tavern by the sea to taste the local cuisine of seafood and snacks and then we return to the hotel in Athens. Tomorrow a new experience awaits you.

Day 4, The blue hug of the Aegean, island like a painting

Our driver picks you up from the hotel and transfers you to the port or the airport where you can depart for Mykonos. Soon you will be in the Cycladic beauty of a civilization that bloomed and advanced around 6,000 BC. The stone houses and the narrow alleys are painted with the color of purity adding blue brushstrokes. The landscape, in total harmony, inspires artists from all over the world. Arriving on the island, our driver will guide you to the hotel for relaxation. In the afternoon you will wander around the famous wind mills of the island, the little Venice with its picturesque houses beaten by the saltiness of sea and then in Hora (the main town of the island). Hora is the most popular town of Mykonos “dressed” in white to give the sensation of coolness to the visitors. It maintains the tradition and hospitality while it awaits you patiently to get lost in the labyrinth of its cobbled streets. If you want, the driver can suggest different places for sunset on the island and ideal spots for dinner and night life.

Day 5, Relaxation and chilling out on the wonderful beaches

Today, the program is free, appropriate to relax in the bright sun and the blue water of Mykonos enjoying peaceful moments. The wonderful color of the sea, the golden sand, the restaurants with local seafood delights, the night bars offering intense amusement until the morning and in general the distinct atmosphere that surrounds the island made it so popular. This has resulted in making Mykonos the most popular island destination for a lot of celebrities for the last decades. The island awaits you to explore freely every spot. You never know…. maybe, a celebrity enjoys his Greek coffee next to you. Get dressed ideally, enjoy the breeze and for sure you will take some selfies with someone famous. Tomorrow a great day awaits you.

Day 6, Reviving the great history

What a great day has dawned… The sun lights the Aegean Sea cooling its rays on the surface of the sea. Today our driver will take you to the private marine to be transferred on a private boat to the neighboring and historical island of Delos. Incredible experience and a special day to stimulate your imagination while you obtain deep knowledge. According to mythology Delos was the birthplace of Apollo. He was a member of the Amphictiony of Delos, cultural and religious center that once attracted pilgrims from all the Greek world. A civilization that started much earlier than the rest of the Ancient Greece. Our guide will lead you through the ruins of the old town dating back to the 9 th century BC. The visit of the archeological site gives you the opportunity to understand the Cycladic civilization and answer questions to a lot of mysteries connected with Ancient Greece. The priceless findings in the area prove how powerful the island was. We go back to Mykonos for getting some rest, tomorrow a full program awaits you.

Day 7, Lost in the Aegean islands, wild beauty versus hospitality

Wonderfully, the sun unfolds its rays and like a dream the whole planet collaborates so that you can get to a unique destination. Our driver will pick you up from the hotel to transfer you to the port where you can board the boat to Santorini. The wild beauty of the island vows to the hospitality of the locals. It is really impressive the structure of the island; result of the volcanic dust and the Ancient civilization. The local driver will transfer you to an overwhelming tour in a traditional vineyard that will enrich your knowledge regarding the production of wine. As known the ground of Santorini is rich in elements that enhance the local production of high-quality wine. You will enrich your knowledge tasting particular, distinct, full-bodied creations from the vineyards of the island. We go to the hotel for resting and maybe an afternoon walk for relaxation. The next day will be fabulous.

Day 8, Santorini – experience the grandeur of a sunset cruise

Another day has started enjoying the tasty breakfast with a view of the magical landscape of Santorini. Today you can enjoy the beauty of the island, visit the capital of Fyra and explore the pedestrian streets, the squares and the churches with the blue domes facing the rocks of Caldera. In the afternoon, the guide will offer you a ride to the marina where you can board on a private boat for a marvelous cruise. The boat will approach the colorful shore of the Red beach under the volcanic rock, you will visit the volcanic springs and experience the view of the unique in the whole world sunset along the Caldera. Our driver will wait to pick you up from the marina to take back to the hotel.

Day 9, Heritage of another era

You can do whatever you wish. You can relax on the dark colored sand of the volcanic shore of Black Sea or revive the history of the place and the surrounding islands through a tour in Akrotiri. The archeological site was a Minoan settlement that dates back to 16 th century BC and it is often mentioned as the “Greek Pompey”. Our guide will direct you through the ruins of the old town where the findings reveal how prosperous the island was. It is high time you experienced the wonderful feelings that filled joyfully your heart…

The beauty of the islands and the experiences will remain in your thoughts for a very long time after this tour. But we are going to be on your side so that we can help you have a new experience. Our driver will meet you at the hotel to take you to the airport of Santorini for your return flight.

Still traveling but wanted to thank you for planning a marvelous trip.  It is truly a trip of a lifetime.

Best,

Susan Lachtman

The IBMT Bar Mitzvah tour was fantastic! It was the perfect blend of family time and peer group time, of sites with religious/historic significance and just plain fun. The guide was personable and informative, and even the bus driver was great. All the details were attended to and you didn’t have to concern yourself with or worry about a thing. It was a true vacation. We would highly recommend it to anyone. If you are going to Eilat, Petra is a must!

We went on a church group to the Holyland with IBMT Tours and had a great trip, everything was planned for us perfectly. There was over 123 people in four different bus groups and things went smoothly, I thought it was going to be hectic with that many people in the group but IBMT did a wonderful job and made sure the buses did not go convoy, every bus had its own time table and itinerary for the day, our guide Dani was so knowledgeable and loving. We love you IBMT and we will recommend you guys. Thanks for everything you have done for us.

We just returned from Israel on an IBMT Bar Mitzvah Tour for our three grandsons.  We had enough family members to warrant our own bus.  After checking out many tour companies we went with IBMT and all of us were glad we did.  The hotels were fabulous and the rooms allotted even more so.  From the INBAL in Jerusalem, KFAR BLUM in the Galilee, the SHERATON in Tel Aviv, to the ROYAL BEACH in Eilat we couldn’t have asked for more.  Our meals were equally excellent.  Beginning with a welcome reception at the INBAL to the closing dinner at the CANAAN restaurant in Tel Aviv one and all loved them.

It was a busy tour made even more so by my husband who was determined the grandchildren see “everything”.  Fortunately for us, we had the best guide when Ornan (from IBMT) gave us GADI.  All of the groups loved their guides but Gadi was  special.  He was able to reach the kids (ages 7-13) as well as the adults.  His knowledge, willingness to adjust the schedule, and good nature gave him a soft spot in all of our hearts.  He filled in at Yad Vashem when the guide droned on a bit too much for some of us.  He searched out a cemetery where a father, grandfather and great grandfather was buried and proceeded to enlighten us on the rituals and customs of a military cemetery.  He adjusted our times to include those little extras.  When weather precluded the camels, we visited Qumran.  After the Bar Mitzvahs, some wanted to walk down Masada - again, no problem.

We loved everything.  Friday night dinner with an Israeli family (coincidentally the husband was from Toronto), meeting the soldiers on the kibbutz, the Druze lunch, sampling different foods at the shuk, the bullet factory and on and on.  Although the weather was precarious in December, it didn’t stop us and we were able to celebrate Chanukah in Israel...menorahs  everywhere, sufganiyot of every kind, celebrations in the street galore.

Would we recommend this tour...without a moments hesitation.  We had a family trip of a lifetime.  Thank you also to our bus driver Louie, whom we all loved and who got us around safely.

“Gadi” - what else can we say ... g double o - d, j-o-b. Good job, good job.  V-e-r-y-n-i-c-e, very nice, very nice.💕

I cannot imagine a better, more organized, more perfect experience! IBMT went above and beyond all expectations!

Loved the trip! The itinerary was fantastic and really kept us moving. We were able to see and do so much. Best of all was our tour guide Natalie. She was very kind, patient and extremely knowledgeable on every aspect of Israel.

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

I have booked all accommodation except for Athens and have realized i actually have an extra night up our sleeves, is it worth spending an extra night in santorini (4 all up) or spending 3 nights in Athens? We weren’t super keen to spend more than 2 nights in Athens, particularly because our flight to Australia leaves at 6pm so we have 3 full days almost already there.

would you suggest spending time elsewhere?

My options im thinking are:

1. Add the extra night into one of the island we are visiting ( which is tricky still as our accommodation at all islands are booking or booked up completely so need to find other accommodation)

2. Drop a night in Santorini and choose a 4th island to visit for 2 nights (could feel rushed however)

3. Spend 3 nights in Athens (is this overkill for Athens, we don’t have set plans for this city?)

Any advice is appreciated!

Your itinerary already looks quite busy so I wouldn’t add an extra island, otherwise you’re going to be spending a lot of time packing, unpacking, checking in and out of accommodation, and travelling to and from the ports.

(I’m not sure how you have calculated your time in Athens: you tell us that you have nearly three full days, but have only booked two nights in the city. Two nights only equals one full day, and perhaps a half day either side, so only two days at most.)
