Day Trip From Hamilton Island To Whitehaven Beach

Home » Day Trip From Hamilton Island To Whitehaven Beach

Known as the best beach in the world, Whitehaven Beach is ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities.

It is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and has been regarded as the cleanest beach in Queensland . While the vast beach implores you to sit back and sunbathe with a glass of wine, the turquoise water invites you to explore the aquatic life.

Now, you must be wondering how to reach this scenic spot and what activities to indulge in. Well, we’ve been there, done that! And today, we are going to share our experience at Whitehaven Beach and the tour package we had opted for.

So, without further ado, let’s get started…

Getting To Whitehaven Beach From Hamilton Island

H amilton Island , one of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland, is approximately 11 km away from Whitehaven Beach, making it easy to commute between the two tourist attractions.

Whitehaven Beach - Dreamy Places in Australia

We opted for the half-day tour package by Sailing Whitsundays . Considering the comfortable afternoon timings and the discount offered to families, we thought this tour was ideal for us.

It was a smooth sail from Hamilton Island on an air-conditioned boat with a friendly guide who filled us with many historical insights about the area.

Not to forget that the accompanying view was absolutely breathtaking, so our daughters didn’t even realize when we reached our destination!

South Whitehaven Beach

As soon as we got off the deck, we were welcomed by the sparkling water and soft sand of Whitehaven Beach. The beach stretches across 7 km, so there was a lot to explore during the 2-hour halt.

HAMILTON ISLAND TO WHITEHAVEN BEACH - South Whitehaven Beach

Thanks to the expansive indoor and outdoor seating areas, we could relax and soak up some sun while the kids were having a blast splashing around.

However, note that due to many tourists flocking towards the beach, the constant boating and traveling has polluted the surrounding water.

Since the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, it is our duty, as responsible citizens, to maintain its purity and cleanliness.

Hence, tourists are advised not to take any plants, rocks, animals, and shells from the beaches, as these elements make a safe habitat for the exotic marine life out there.

The South Whitehaven Lookout

Opened for the public in 2019, the South Whitehaven Lookout is a walking trail of approximately 7 km.

South Whitehaven Beach Lookout

If not in a rush, a beach picnic would be perfect in this sandy area. Or take a dip into the crystal clear water and try snorkeling to witness the beautiful life underwater.

In case you’re worried about the walking stretch, it is a beginner-grade walk that requires low-medium level fitness. So, rest assured that the entire family will be able to enjoy the activity and reap the benefits of the fresh surrounding environment.

Inclusions On The Half Day Whitehaven Beach Tour

Coming back to the tour package, it includes a complimentary beach tent, stinger suits, afternoon tea, and a light lunch on the way back to Hamilton Island .

HAMILTON ISLAND TO WHITEHAVEN BEACH - South Whitehaven Beach

However, you can purchase additional drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and refreshments, if required.

HAMILTON ISLAND TO WHITEHAVEN BEACH - South Whitehaven Beach Half Day Trip Inclusions

You are advised to carry a photo ID, any type of sun protection (sunscreen, hat, etc.), swimsuit, towel, water bottle, camera, and an additional layer of clothing (during colder months). Note that a photo ID is mandatory to justify your ticket type and enter the boat.

Our Experience

Overall, we were able to spend some quality time at Whitehaven Beach, surrounded by nature’s bounty. However, whichever tour package you choose, ensure you check the itinerary carefully.

Best Things To Do In Hamilton Island - Whitehaven Beach - Daytrips from Hamilton Island

Unfortunately, we made a blunder thinking that the tour includes a visit to the Hill Inlet Lookout. And as you can probably tell, we actually went to the South Whitehaven Lookout, which was quite a bummer.

Nevertheless, our daughters enjoyed feeding the fish and clicking some pictures around the beach. But had we known that this half-day tour did not include the Hill Inlet Lookout, we would have definitely looked into other options.

So, that was our bittersweet experience at Whitehaven Beach! We hope you can learn from our mistake, and opt for a suitable tour pack.

HAMILTON ISLAND TO WHITEHAVEN BEACH - South Whitehaven Beach

But we would still recommend this afternoon tour by Sailing Whitsundays for families who are short of time and budget. Overall, we had a pleasant experience, and we are sure you will, too!

Pristine, pure, perfect – the silica sand here is dazzlingly white, washed in on the tide over thousands of years. Located on the largest island in the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach offers up 7km of shore to explore – swim, snorkel, laze on the sand or even take a hike through the forest to an ocean lookout or secret swimming spot: your time here can be as energetic or relaxed as you’d like it to be.

Don’t miss the walk to the spectacular viewpoint over Hill Inlet at Whitehaven’s northern end, where a swirl of white sand and turquoise water fuse to create a stunning blend of colours.

Explore the Whitsundays GREAT BARRIER REEF & WHITEHAVEN BEACH

Located in the heart of the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is an ideal base from which to explore these natural wonders.

Great Barrier Reef & Whitehaven Beach

Hamilton Island is a perfect base for exploring two of the region’s most famous and renowned attractions: the magnificent Great Barrier Reef and the pristine Whitehaven Beach.   The world’s largest expanse of coral, the Great Barrier Reef is home to the most diverse plant and animal life on the planet, with spectacular coral formations, hundreds of species of fish, turtles, manta rays and even visiting dolphins and whales. Located in the heart of the Whitsundays, and with a range of accommodation near the Great Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is an ideal place from which to explore this unique part of the world. The Hamilton Island Tour Desk offers a selection of well-organised tours, activities and excursions.   Whitehaven Beach, with its warm, turquoise-hued water and soft, impeccably white sand, is one of the world’s most unspoiled and beautiful beaches - named as the number one beach in Australia by TripAdvisor*. The Hamilton Island Tour Desk can also help you explore Whitehaven Beach in a way that best suits you.  In 2017, Whitehaven Beach was rated the #1 Beach in the South Pacific in the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards.

What you’ll love about the Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach:

Proximity to hamilton island.

Whitehaven Beach is just a thirty-minute trip on a high-speed catamaran, and Hamilton Island offers several Whitehaven Beach day trips and Whitehaven Beach tours. A trip to Reefworld, a permanently moored pontoon on the Great Barrier Reef, takes around two hours from Hamilton Island via catamaran, making it a superb destination for a half-day or full-day tour.

Endless ways to enjoy

There are multiple ways to visit and enjoy Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef from Hamilton Island, depending on how much time you have, your budget, and your travel preferences. You can take a scenic helicopter ride, a seaplane, sail in one of the island’s yachts, or take a tour via a high speed catamaran.  You can select from a range of day-trips and tours to various reef destinations, where you can dive, snorkel, or simply relax and enjoy the view.

World-famous, iconic destinations

No visit to this part of the world would be complete without a visit to these remarkable natural wonders. Whitehaven Beach stretches for seven kilometres and is washed by swirls of turquoise, blue and green water. The sand is 98 per cent pure white silica, which gives it a brilliant, near luminescent colour. It has been voted as the world’s top eco-friendly beach, and Queensland’s cleanest beach. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living thing on earth and is even visible from outer space. It spans close to 350,000 square kilometres, includes thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands, and is home to countless species of fish, molluscs, starfish, turtles, dolphins and sharks.

Family-friendly tours

Both Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef are family-friendly destinations. Little ones can happily snorkel at Reefworld, and there’s also an underwater submarine which runs frequent and free tours. They can also admire the reef’s resident grouper through the viewing hole. Whitehaven Beach offers plenty of opportunities for children to play on the sand, or to swim or snorkel in the delightfully warm turquoise water.

Can you get to whitehaven beach without a tour.

Whitehaven Beach is located in the Whitsunday islands and is only accessible by boat, seaplane, or helicopter tour. There is no public ferry terminal at Whitehaven Beach and chartering your own boat is the only way to visit without a tour.

What is the cheapest way to get to Whitehaven Beach?

A half-day boat tour is the cheapest way to travel from Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach or Daydream Island to Whitehaven Beach.

If you are worried about seasickness, choose a fast boat like ZigZag Whitsundays , fast boats sit on top of the water and do not get the rolling motion that causes seasickness.

When the tour boats stop at each location it’s away from the wind so you don’t need to worry about a rocking boat.

What should i take on a Whitehaven Beach Tour ?

Inside a small daypack, we recommend you should take the below on any Whitehaven Beach Tours.

  • Change of clothes

What is the best Whitehaven Beach Tour?

Choosing the best Whitehaven Beach Tour comes down to what you want for a day in the Whitsunday Islands, here are my 3 recommendations

  • ZigZag Whitsundays – for visiting the south end of Whitehaven Beach and the south Lookout, they also include Chalkies Beach, Haslwood Island Lookout and 1 Snorkel Location. Pros – Fast boat, more locations, inclusive ticket pricing, small group tour of 30 people, very comfortable boat seats, very low seasickness probability. Cons – does not visit hill inlet lookout
  • Thundercat Whitsundays – for visiting the north end of Whitehaven Beach, hill inlet lookout, they also include 2 snorkel locations. Pros – fast boat, 2 snorkel locations, hill inlet lookout. Cons – does not visit the south end of the beach, no dietary requirements provided, plastic seating.
  • Cruise Whitsundays Half Day Tour – perfect for guests low on time and just want to visit Whitehaven Beach without snorkelling. Pros – Half day tour, south end and lookout, an air-conditioned ferry ride. Cons – Large group numbers in the 100s, no snorkelling or lunches.

Is there a shop at Whitehaven Beach?

There are no shops on Whitehaven Beach the island is uninhabited.

Can you walk on Whitehaven Beach?

Visitors can spend time walking the beach or the tracks at each end of the beach which leads to the lookouts.

Where is the best spot on Whitehaven Beach?

In my opinion, the best spot on Whitehaven Beach is the south end, specifically the South Lookout. This area offers stunning views of the pristine beach and is considered the true Whitehaven Beach.

On the other hand, the northern end accessed through Tongue Bay, known as Betty’s Beach and Whitehaven Bay, can get quite crowded between 10am and 4pm. While still beautiful, and you will see Hill Inlet (at the right tide) there is no beating standing on the named beach.

Is Whitehaven Beach accessible by wheelchair?

Unfortunately no, there is no wheelchair access on the beach

What is the sand at Whitehaven Beach made of?

Whitehaven Beach’s sand is cool to touch on hot days and perfectly compliments the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays. Made up of 98.9% pure silica, it has a unique white colour and powdery texture. The sand is so fine that it can easily get into and harm electronic gadgets.

Is it safe to swim at Whitehaven Beach?

You can swim at Whitehaven Beach all year round due to the warm tropical waters. There are no large waves or rips and the shoreline is shallow with a light decline.  However, during the months of November To April, it is advised to use a stinger suit due to jellyfish.

Are there any dangerous animals at Whitehaven Beach?

Dangerous marine stingers can be found in the waters all year round but mostly from November to April, like any ocean there are sharks, and saltwater crocodiles can be in the sea at all times of the year, but is very rare to see them around the islands

Are there any public restrooms at Whitehaven Beach?

Public restrooms are available at the South end of Whitehaven Beach only. These are hybrid compostable toilets.

Is there any shade available at Whitehaven Beach?

The south end of Whitehaven Beach has picnic tables with sunshade roofs, there is also shade under the trees that line the beach. Some tours also provide shade tents.
