Move over, Barbiecore. Leading up to her latest film, Challengers , Zendaya has been sporting tenniscore looks to tease the sports rom-com. Directed by Lucas Guadagnino and co-starring Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, the movie features costumes created by Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson — and fashion fans can score the very same luxe tee worn by the film’s stylish star.

The apparel comes in white and grey melange colorways and in men’s sizes XS to XXL (so you’ll want to size down for women’s fits). During Challengers ‘ global press tour, Zendaya teamed with stylist Law Roach (who encouraged fans to celebrate the film with court-ready style) for her tennis-inspired looks. She kicked things off in Sydney with a sparkling green Loewe gown with a plunging neckline and the silhouette of a tennis player in action, followed by Marc Jacobs-era archival looks by Louis Vuitton (including two ensembles in vibrant vert hues) in Paris.

Another head-to-toe Loewe look in Rome called for a sequined white pleated mini dress with stilettos that were finished with real tennis balls, and her London ‘fit was a Wimbledon-esque Thom Browne tennis racket print gown with a polo neckline and pleated high-slit skirt.

In Challengers , Zendaya plays Tashi, a retired tennis prodigy-turned-coach caught in a love triangle with her tennis champion husband, Art (Faist), and her former lover, Patrick (O’Connor). The 131-minute film features a score by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and frequent collaborator Atticus Ross.

Over at the Kit Kat Club at the August Wilson Theatre, Sally Bowles laments, “Everybody loves a winner, so nobody loved me” in the hit revival of Cabaret . But that’s not the case for [Spoiler Alert!] RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16 runner-up Sapphira Cristál.  The Philadelphia drag legend kicks off a North American tour in Vancouver on July 11, with 24 more cities to follow. Expect “a magical musical comedy extravaganza!” says Sapphira. “It’s a funny, interactive, audience-driven show about my life, complete with songs off my upcoming album and humorous anecdotes of things I’ve experienced. I sing, perform, dance, and give you a guided glimpse into the crystal ball that is Sapphira Cristál!”

The classically trained opera singer is also teasing her upcoming debut album with a sneak peek at the lead single, “Enough.”

Can you feel the love tonight?

The Lion King marks its 30th anniversary this spring with a screening and live performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Originally released in 1994, Julie Taymor famously adapted the animated film for the stage three years later, where it continues to play on Broadway, surpassing 10,000 performances. 

Famous faces will grace the stage to reprise their film and Broadway roles, including Nathan Lane (Timon), Jeremy Irons (Scar), and Billy Eichner , who voiced Timon in the 2019 remake. Jennifer Hudson is also joining the tribute. We can only hope for an encore from her season 3 American Idol performance — roar, Jennifer, roar! 

Broadway is wet for all the right reasons

The movie-to-musical machine continues to chug along. This Broadway season is no exception, but if you dig a bit deeper, you’ll realize that some of this year’s arrivals began as books. The Outsiders , S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel about a group of boys on the wrong side of the tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was first published in 1967. But it was Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film adaptation that made the young ones swoon.

With a cast led by a who’s who of 80s heartthrobs, including Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, and Tom Cruise, The Outsiders captured the endurance of families of choice, but the film score by Coppola’s father, Carmine, never quite captured the tone of the film’s inhabitants.

Enter the folk duo Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justine Levine to score the new musical with a book by Levine and Adam Rapp (older brother to Queerty favorite Anthony Rapp ) and breathe new life into an American classic.

The vibe often feels like a Grease – West Side Story mash-up, a bit over-earnest, and too many storylines to invest beyond the central character of Ponyboy Curtis (an endearing Brody Grand) and brothers Darrel (Brent Comer) and Sodapop (Jason Schmidt). But the musical’s exhilarating choreography is some of the season’s best, thanks to real-life brothers Rick and Jeff Kuperman , who capture the Greasers’ fraternal bond.

In one of the musical’s most compelling scenes, the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socialites) come head to head in a rumble that would make Jerome Robbins’ breath gasp. Torrential rain showers upon the angsty youth as a switchblade delivers a fatal thrust, catapulting the story into new territory.

What to expect at the return of ‘Cats’

We were excited (terrified?) and intrigued (skeptical?) when we first heard that Cats was making a New York City comeback. Perhaps one of the most polarizing megamusicals of the 20th century, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s feline extravaganza was begging for another life. We’ve had a peek inside the room where the claws have come out, and let us tell you, expect fierceness.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball (we see a revival theme emerging —  Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club — what’s next? Jersey Boys at Asbury Park ?) reimagines those famous felines in the world of New York City ballroom culture. But what exactly does that mean? The show’s creators are dangling a cat wand to tease and tempt theatergoers. Here’s a first look at what to expect when the show opens at the newly opened PAC NYC this June.

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses ‘Getting Kicked Out of Show Business’ on Her New Comedy Tour: ‘It’s Been a Toll on My Ego’

As she strode onto the famed comedy stage of the Largo at the Coronet Theater in the heart of West Hollywood on Wednesday night, Ellen DeGeneres was a woman in command. A sold-out crowd of about 200 fans burst into roaring applause, eager to see the comedian turned talk-show host return to her comedy roots on the first night of her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour . And she didn’t disappoint. Dressed in a simple, black long-sleeved shirt, white pants, and sneakers, DeGeneres addressed the elephant in the room with her first words.

“I used to say that I didn’t care what other people thought of me and I realized…I said that at the height of my popularity,” DeGeneres said, prompting the audience to erupt in laughter. “It is such a waste of time to worry about what other people think…Right now I’m hoping you’re thinking, ‘This is marvelous, I’m so happy to be here.’ But you could be thinking, ‘Let’s see how this goes.’”

Her Wednesday night set — culled from material DeGeneres said she’s been working on for about six months, including in a handful of performances — kicked off with a recap of what she’s been up to since her talk-show ended: gardening, a lot of sweatpants-wearing, and collecting chickens as pets. She joked that as someone who once hosted a daily show, she appreciates the plight of the chicken who has to lay an egg every day. Still, most of the routine found her grappling with having become Public Enemy No. 1 — a whiplash turn from her once-firm reputation as the happy-go-lucky talk-show host who ended each episode telling her audience to “be kind to one another.”

“What else can I tell you?” she mused, mock-reflecting on her recent past before adding sarcastically, “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

“I didn’t go to business school. I went to Charlie’s Chuckle Hutt,” DeGeneres joked. “The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said ‘Ellen’ and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said ‘Ellen,’ but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge.”

She chalked up some of the vitriol she faced at the time to sexism, noting that “there are consequences” for not following the pre-existing rules and gender roles. Referencing the cancellation of her eponymous sitcom in the 1990s after she’d announced to the world that she was gay, she added wryly, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business…Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

The demise of her talk show seems especially painful for DeGeneres since, as she described in her set, it had been her way back to being embraced after her Nineties exile. “I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

As a 66-year-old woman, DeGeneres said she’s also grown increasingly aware of the aging process both physically and mentally. She finds herself thinking about existential subjects like time and the universe, and said her doctor recently told her she has osteoporosis and arthritis. Plus, she joked, now she’s at a point in her life where she’s obsessing over Wheel of Fortune .

Bringing up chickens as another metaphor for women and gender roles, DeGeneres made her point with “one last chicken joke,” as she put it. “Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she wanted to and you wouldn’t ask a rooster that.”

At the conclusion of her set, the crowd gave DeGeneres a standing ovation, prompting her to return to the stage for a candid conversation with the audience. DeGeneres called on people one by one as they asked questions and shared messages of gratitude. One same-sex couple said they had gotten married earlier that day and asked for marital advice. (DeGeneres’ wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi, briefly made an appearance onstage during the Q&A, at fans’ request; DeGeneres explained that the last few years had been very tough on de Rossi as well, saying, “We were both just laying low for a while.”) One woman thanked DeGeneres for her original Netflix comedy special (2018’s Relatable ) because it made her mom laugh when she was diagnosed with cancer. Another woman expressed her thanks to DeGeneres for participating in her autistic daughter’s bat mitzvah. One person who said they’d been inspired by DeGeneres’ positivity asked if she used dancing as a means of escape during her recent tough period. 

“No. It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres replied. “But I am dancing now.”

DeGeneres flashed another moment of sensitivity and bewilderment when a fan asked if her first go-round with public scrutiny after coming out prepared her for the next one, when The Ellen DeGeneres Show collapsed.

“This was a whole different thing,” she replied. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal… I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”

DeGeneres added that it took her a long time to figure out what she wanted to say on the topic and how she wanted to say it.

Citing the self-help book The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom , DeGeneres explained that she’s made her peace with the fact that everyone has their own reasons for making certain choices and “they have to live with their stuff.”

“I do realize that whatever happens may have nothing to do with me, it’s just somebody else’s stuff,” she said. “So no, I will not [seek revenge].”

Bunched Leaderboard Means a Hollywood Ending in Store at Wilshire

It should come as no surprise that, in the shadow of the Hollywood sign in California, we’ve got a dramatic final act set to unfold at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro with a pair of Australians tied for the lead through 54 holes.

Hannah Green – the defending champion at Wilshire Country Club – and Grace Kim, sit at 7 under and own a one-shot advantage over a trio of players including Jin Hee Im, who fired a new 18-hole scoring record Saturday, an 8-under 63.

Green had a tidy, if turbulent, moving day at the JM Eagle LA Championship. She was the only golfer in the final five groups of the day to shoot under par after a 1-under 70.

“I feel quite exhausted to be honest,” Green admitted. “Hopefully tomorrow I can be a bit more consistent. Didn't hit many greens today and that's probably led to some of my bogeys. Hopefully I just play boring golf tomorrow and those putts go in.”

Green made three bogeys in her final five holes of her front nine and then righted the ship after making the turn. She rolled in an impressive eagle on the par-5 13th and very nearly dunked her approach shot on the par-4 14th. She managed to save par on 18 after nailing a 20-foot slider to put a bow on her day.

Im, Maja Stark, and Esther Henseleit are tied for third at 6 under, just a shot back of the Aussies, while Nasa Hataoka – who shot a 7-under 64 and would have tied Im’s record score had she not bogeyed her final hole of the day – is in sixth and just two back of the lead.

“Obviously saw some of the scores that people produced in the morning, 7-, 8-under. Some really great rounds. I knew it would be trickier in the afternoon when it gets a little bit bouncy, so I wanted to make sure that I was at least trying to shoot under par. When I was over par I was feeling like I was really behind the eight ball,” Green said. “The momentum switch on the back nine there made a big difference. Hopefully that putt, especially on 18, gives me some momentum into tomorrow as well.”

Green and Kim, who played a practice round together earlier in the week, will go off together in the final group Sunday. Kim won her first LPGA Tour title a year ago, while Green is a winner already this season, having won the HSBC Women’s World Championship this past March.

After Friday it seemed like Kim was in the drivers’ seat, sitting at -12 and holding a four-shot advantage. She struggled Saturday, however, and shot a 5-over 76 to fall back to the pack. Kim said she had a frustrating afternoon on the poa annua greens but tried to stay present.

“I think knowing I can go that low is always a good reminder that I can win the thing,” said Kim, who tied the previous-best 18-hole score in the first round, a 7-under 64. “I think at the end obviously I shaved a few edges today, so I couldn't take things personally from the greens and the results, because, again, it was very tough. But just mentally I'm telling myself I'm saving the birdies for tomorrow.”

Kim said that she and Green are “friends before competitors” so she’s looking forward to a comfortable grouping for Sunday’s finale.

Green didn’t believe anyone was going to get to -12 (Kim’s score after 36 holes) but now that Kim’s fallen back, Green is going to lean on her winning experience at Wilshire – even as she is paired with a long-time pal for the finale – to see if she can lift the trophy for the second year in a row.

“It's really nice I do have that experience and positive memories. Hopefully, yeah, I don't get too ahead of myself and think about that too much,” Green said. “Just keep playing every hole and not really think about the end result.”

15 people injured when tram collides with guardrail at Universal Studios theme park near Los Angeles

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — More than a dozen people suffered mostly minor injuries when a tram used for tours crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, authorities and the company said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the theme park in Universal City, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA, the agency said in a social media post.

The California Highway Patrol said that while the tram was negotiating a turn, its last car collided with a metal guardrail, “causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers.”

The fire department said 15 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The highway patrol’s statement on Sunday said some of the injuries were moderate, but didn’t specify a number.

Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement Sunday afternoon that tours have resumed with a modified route.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority,” the statement said.

The highway patrol, which is leading the investigation, said alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor.

The tram circuit, called the World-Famous Studio Tour, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Universal movies including “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tour starting Friday.

Puzzling out Moscow for visitors under 30

Hugging strangers, reciting poetry and looking for bird-shaped graffiti is not usually part of a city tour—but Moscow Game Tour is no ordinary company.

Nikita Bogdanov, 25, founder of the company, says: “It’s not a regular tour, it’s a quest. You interact with Russian people, and you gain more experience.”

Moscow Game Tour is one of a new breed of innovative tours run by and for young people. They are either low-cost or free, and prioritise interacting with locals over traditional sightseeing.

Mr Bogdanov started Moscow Game Tour in 2009 to encourage visitors to explore areas outside the city centre. In the tour, which costs 700 roubles (about $22), participants are “players” and complete challenges that lead them to clues in the shape of a matryoshka doll.

Many tasks involve asking passers-by for directions or trying a Russian phrase. Along the way, players discover interesting features such as a monastery canteen, or a Socialist Realist statue.

Some clues are easier to locate than others. “There was one spot that we absolutely could not find,” says Vera Baranova, 25, who took part in a quest at Tsaritsyno Park in south-east Moscow. “When we asked someone, it turned out that we were actually right on top of it.”

Mr Bogdanov also operates the Moscow Free Tour, which provides an overview of major sites between Kitai Gorod and the Kremlin free of charge. In peak season, this more traditional outing attracts between a dozen and 40 people every day; the Game Tour runs only once or twice a week and usually attracts between five and 10 participants. Convincing visitors to sign up for an unconventional tour can be a challenge. “The Free Tour is more popular because it’s more easily understandable,” Mr Bogdanov says. “For the Game Tour, you need to explain to people what it is.”

Business has picked up as Mr Bogdanov has formed relationships with hotels, major tour agencies including TUI and companies such as Google. This year, he also began receiving support from Moscow’s Committee for Tourism and the Hotel Industry, which has launched a programme called “Moscow Fresh” to support creative tourism.

In addition to the Free Tour and Game Tour, Mr Bogdanov’s company offers daily paid-for tours with a variety of themes. The retro Communist Tour visits central Soviet landmarks, including the Lubyanka (former headquarters of the KGB); the Gulag Museum; a Soviet-style canteen and Eliseevsky, a regal shop on Tverskaya Street considered the grandest store in the Soviet Union (which these days sells imported French yoghurt and other modern luxuries).

Visitors can also venture below ground on the Metro Tour.  The latter stops at some of the most ornate stations in Moscow’s beloved Stalinist metro system, such as the mosaic-adorned Komsomolskaya. In an attempt to supply visitors with information beyond the average pocket guide, the tour recounts little-known facts about the metro, such as how many babies have been born on it.

Alexei Sotskov, 30, was inspired to start Moscow Greeter , a local franchise of the international Greeter network, after giving informal tours to friends. “I have a lot of friends in foreign countries, and when they come to Moscow I show them interesting places. So I thought it would be a great idea to start running a tourist service,” he says.

The greeters are mostly students learning English who take visitors to lesser-known sights, such as the former royal estate Kolomenskoye, as well as exhibitions and sporting events. The greeters not only show the tourists around but they also chat to them. “Greeters talk about their lives, their parents, where they’re from in Moscow, and where they study,” says Mr Sotskov. 

“Traditional guides just give people information they read in a book.”

Valentina Lebedeva, a second-year linguistics student, has been a greeter for two months. “When most people come to Moscow, they visit the Kremlin and everything, but they go back and they still don’t really get how people really live here,” she says.

“Greeters offers tourists a good way to get a real impression of Russia, so that you don’t just visit the usual tourist sights.”

Another unconventional tour company, Lovely Russia , also strives to provide a more engaging experience for tourists. “A lot of the tours I saw being run by tour providers were really boring, just buses with large crowds of 60 year-olds,” says the company’s co-founder Anna Shegurova, 25. “There was not a lot for a younger crowd, a more off-the-beaten-path kind of thing.” Lovely Russia offers a variety of $22 tours in English. Locations include metro stations, Constructivist landmarks and a “Moscow as it is” outing that winds through the city’s side streets. At the end of the tour, guides suggest places where participants can enjoy a beer.

Ms Shegurova says the guides try to show visitors “a different side of Russia”.

“It’s a great city with a really long and interesting history… but you wouldn’t really know unless you have someone with you who’s able to share this history and make it interesting,” she says.

For visitors without a guide, getting around Moscow can still be a challenge. Over the past year,  some English-language signs indicating the locations of historical sights have been put up, but metro and street signs remain in Cyrillic.

“Coming here, it’s very hard to get orientated,” says Irina Tripapina, 25, the organiser of WowLocal . “We decided to compensate for the lack of information in English by establishing a community of volunteers who are willing to help visitors find their way.” After passing language and navigation tests, WowLocal volunteers are given T-shirts and badges emblazoned with the phrase “Ask Me, I’m Local.” 

“Tourists can meet WowLocal at any part of the city and at any time – even at night in Butovo,” says Ms Tripapina, referring to the suburb south of Moscow.

Since the project started in July, Ms Tripapina says it has recruited about 400 volunteers. She wears her badge every day on her way to work, and says she’s frequently stopped by foreigners asking for directions (as well as Russians looking for the metro).

Occasionally, she fields some more unusual requests: “Once, a guy from Britain asked me where to get a bowl of pelmeni,” she says.

WowLocal also brings together local people and tourists through city navigation games and conversation clubs at hostels. “We bring volunteers together with the travellers, so that they can share with each other,” explains Ms Tripapina.
