Ford Expedition Brake Warning Light: Meaning, Causes, + How to Fix

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Your Ford Expedition ‘s brake light indicator is there to inform you of an issue with your vehicle’s brake system. It is a light different from the anti-lock brake system, which has its own ABS warning light .

2005 ford excursion warning lights

The brake light indicates a problem with the physical braking system itself.

Ford Expedition Brake Warning Light

Check the Emergency Brake First

2005 ford excursion warning lights

If you read this article trying to figure out whether to drive your vehicle, check the emergency brake first.

If it’s engaged, the brake light will stay lit. If the handle isn’t all of the way down, it’ll cause the brake warning light to stay on. Check to make sure that there isn’t a little bit left that it needs to turn the brake light off.

Now if the emergency brake didn’t fix the situation, it’s time to look into what is causing your Expedition’s brake warning light to stay on. The brake light is perhaps the most critical warning light of all.

We do not recommend driving with this light on at all . Doing so may lead to injury when the brakes fail.

Ford Expedition Brake Warning Light Causes

The brake warning light indicates that your Expedition has detected that one of its major brake components has failed, typically seen through a pressure loss.

You’ll feel a loss of pressure that manifests itself in the form of a “mushy” brake pedal (low brake fluid level).

If the brake light is only coming on when you push the brakes, that’s a definite indication that the pressure in the brake system is too low. Either the brakes need to be bled, or there is a leak.

Brake Fluid Leak

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Since you’ve already checked the emergency brake handle, now it’s time to check the master cylinder and see if the brake fluid is low or not. Now if it is low but not empty, adding more may provide a temporary fix.

If the brake fluid looks like it is out, you’ll need to add more, bleed the brakes, and ideally fix the problem so that you aren’t repeating all of this again. If the brake fluid leaks over the brake pads and shoes, it means poor brake performance.

Just remember, it had to leak out somewhere, and adding fluid without fixing the problem is a temporary solution. The leak can get worse over time and lead to brake failure.  Look around the brake calipers and brake lines for the leak. Look for fluid under your Expedition, where you usually park.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Pressure Differential Switch

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Your brake system is divided into two circuits. These circuits cut the brake system in two. That way, if the brake system gets a leak or fails, you still have brakes on half of your Expedition’s wheels.

The pressure differential switch measures the difference in pressure between the two circuits and will report that there is a difference by turning on your Expedition’s brake warning light.

In most vehicles, this switch is located in the master cylinder . You’ll see a harness plugged in somewhere around there.

Worn Brake Pads

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Worn brake pads are often a cause of the brake warning light coming on. The pads have built-in wear sensors that will trigger the light whenever they get down to a certain thickness.  These sensors are known as squealers, and you’ll hear.

This is important because it alerts you to replace your brakes before they become too thin and can’t stop the vehicle properly. If your brakes are worn, be sure to have them replaced as

Check the Brake Lights

Some vehicles will now activate the brake warning light on the dash if the actual brake lights behind it have failed. Check to see that both of them are lighting up. If not, try replacing the bulb and see if that solves the problem.

How to Turn off Your Expedition’s Brake System Warning Light

2005 ford excursion warning lights

The only way to turn the brake light off is to restore proper line pressure to both brake circuits when the pedal is pushed.

Don’t drive if your Expedition is having trouble stopping or noticeably leaking fluid. Have it towed to a mechanic.

If you mess up fixing your engine, the vehicle does not move. If you mess up fixing the brakes, it doesn’t stop. That’s infinitely more dangerous.

If your Ford Expedition’s brake warning light is on, and you’ve checked the emergency brake, you’ll need to look for a leak in the lines, calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, etc. Good luck diagnosing the issue. If there is anything that you would like to add, please leave a comment below.

Ford Excursion ABS light is on – causes and how to reset

The ABS, short for anti-lock braking system, is a safety feature in Ford Excursion which prevents the wheels from locking up during braking. This makes it possible to maintain steerability and directional stability even when braking hard, allowing the driver to avoid obstacles. If the ABS light illuminates in the instrument cluster of Excursion, it means the anti-lock braking system has malfunctioned.

Ford Excursion

The ABS light comes on in the dashboard of Ford Excursion when one or more of the wheel speed sensors have malfunctioned, brake fluid is too low, the fuse is blown or the relay is bad, tire pressure is low, or if the ABS module has developed a defect.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

1. Bad wheel speed sensor

Ford Excursion has an ABS sensor at each wheel hub which measures the speed of the respective wheel and transmits the information to the ABS control unit. If a sensor develops a defect and sends inaccurate or no speed information, the ABS light illuminates in the instrument cluster.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Bad wheel speed sensor is one of the leading causes of ABS warning light in Excursion, as they are exposed to harsh conditions due to their close proximity to the wheels.

How to check ABS sensor

It isn’t usually possible to identify the faulty ABS sensor in Excursion by physical inspection. The only most reliable method of diagnosing an ABS speed sensor is by connecting an OBDII scanner to your vehicle and reading out the error codes. The error code also makes it easy to determine which sensor is affected. The faulty sensor must be replaced to resolve the issue. Note: Make sure the code reader you are using can read your vehicle’s ABS codes. Not all readers can.

Damaged speed sensor wire, or bad connector

It is possible the sensor is functioning properly in your Excursion, but the signal is interrupted due to damaged wire or corroded connector. Before replacing the sensor, the wiring and connectors of the affected sensor should be physically inspected for any signs of damage or corrosion.

2. Low brake fluid

Excessively low level of brake fluid can trigger ABS light in Excursion. Check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir, the level should sit near the high marking on the reservoir.

Causes of low brake fluid

In case the brake fluid level is low, topping it off should turn off the ABS warning light in Excursion. But it is important to further investigate the reason for low brake fluid level. The three common causes of low brake fluid are worn brake pads, worn rotors, and a leak in the system. Check the condition of the brake pads and rotors, also see if there is any sign of fluid leak under your vehicle and on the wheel hubs.

3. Bad ABS pump or control module

The ABS pump, also called Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), consists of an electronic and a mechanical-hydraulic part. When you brake hard at high speed and the wheels lock, the hydraulic part of the unit actuates the valves to reduce hydraulic pressure to the brake at the affected wheels. A malfunction in the ABS pump can cause the ABS light to illuminate in Excursion, and a fault code is stored in the memory. Connect a diagnostic device to your vehicle to read the code.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

4. Low tire pressure

Low tire pressure in one of the wheels of Ford Excursion can cause the ABS light to turn on. The diameter of the wheel is reduced when its tire is underinflated, this causes the wheel to spin faster than other wheels in the vehicle. When the speed difference between the wheels is detected by the control module, an ABS fault code is triggered for the speed sensor of the wheel with low tire pressure.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

TPMS warning light

5. Blown fuse or bad relay

A blown fuse or bad relay can cause the ABS system to stop functioning. Check the owners manual of your vehicle or the fuse box cover to find the exact location of the fuse for the ABS system. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one with the specified amp rating.

Is it safe to drive with ABS light on?

When the ABS light illuminates in the instrument cluster of Excursion, the ABS system is disabled and the braking system acts like older traditional braking system. The braking pressure from the master cylinder to the brake calipers is undiminished. What this means is, you can brake normally with moderate braking in dry conditions. But in case of wet or snowy conditions, or when braking hard, you may lose steerability of the vehicle. Therefore, when the ABS light is on, drive with extreme caution and fix the issue as soon as possible.

How to reset the ABS light

Fix the issue.

Resetting the ABS light in Excursion without solving the underlying issue may not help, as the warning light will turn back on when the system again detects the fault. The light should disappear automatically after fixing the issue. If it doesn’t turn off immediately, driving your vehicle for a few miles should help.

OBDII scanner method

The proper way to reset the ABS light in Excursion is by clearing the codes with an OBDII scanner. If the warning light doesn’t turn off automatically after fixing the issue, you will have to do it manually by connecting a diagnostic device and then deleting all the error codes related to the ABS system.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

Disconnect the battery

If you don’t have a diagnostic device, it may be possible to reset the ABS light in Excursion by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Ford Excursion is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

2005 ford excursion warning lights

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Excursion. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Excursion.

There are many reasons why the ABS light is turned on in your Ford Excursion. To pinpoint the cause, you must use a diagnostic tool and scan for codes. For example, if one of the speed sensors has failed, the scanner will tell you exactly which wheel sensor is causing the problem.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop. A professional mechanic can swiftly diagnose the ABS issue for you.

When a Ford’s dashboard warning light is green or blue, this represents a feature being used or has been activated. No action is required at this time.

When a light is yellow, your car is trying to tell you that a vital safety feature of the car is being used (such as stability control on wet roads), a mild fault has been detected or a repair may be required. If in doubt, seek the services of a mechanic or dealership as soon as possible.

Orange or Red

If the dashboard symbol on your Ford is orange or red, this may represent your vehicle having a problem that needs urgent attention . You MUST call or visit your dealership or mechanic immediately.

What does wrench light mean on ford.

Wrench light on Ford

The wrench light, also known as the powertrain fault light, illuminates on a Ford when there is an issue with the powertrain and four-wheel-drive system .

The powertrain contains essential components of your vehicle, including the engine, transmission, and driveshaft. And one of the faults in these parts can cause the wrench symbol to light up.

So if the light comes on, it is recommended to have your truck inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue.

However, if you would like to handle the problem yourself, part IV of this article will give you some tips that help you to turn off the light on your own.

Now, scroll down to discover whether you can continue driving with the wrench light.

Can I Drive with the Wrench Light On?

No. It is not recommended to drive your Ford vehicle with the wrench light on. Continuing to drive your vehicle with the light on can cause further damage to your vehicle, leading to more expensive repairs in the future.

If the light is on but not flashing and the vehicle is driving normally, it may be safe to drive to a service center for inspection and repair, but it is important to address the issue as soon as possible.

But if the light is flashing or the vehicle is experiencing a significant decrease in power or performance, it is not safe to continue driving. You should pull over to a safe place, turn off the engine, and seek help from a certified technician or a trusted auto repair shop immediately.

Why Is the Wrench Light On?

The wrench light may illuminate for a variety of reasons, which can include:

Transmission Issues

As I mentioned above, transmission is one of the parts of your powertrain. So transmission issues are frequently the cause that activates the wrench light on your truck.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects the issue by interpreting information from the engine sensors.

Nevertheless, this could also be caused by minor problems like loose wiring.

Solution: Take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic to identify the problem with the transmission and resolve it.

The damaged carburetor might cause your vehicle to jolt and overheat. These problems can trigger sensors in the PCM, which can subsequently pop up the wrench light.

Solution: If the damage is minor, a simple cleaning or rebuilding may suffice. However, in more severe cases, you might need to replace it.

Battery Problems

An illuminated wrench light may be caused by a low battery level or a drained battery because the ECM or PCM is not getting enough power to function properly.

Solution: Check the battery by connecting a backup battery and verifying that all the electricals are functioning correctly.

Throttle Issues

If the throttle position sensor is malfunctioning, it can send incorrect data to the PCM and cause the engine to run improperly. Then, the wrench symbol will show up on your dashboard.

Furthermore, if the throttle body is dirty or has a buildup of carbon, it might obstruct airflow into the engine and result in similar problems.

Solution: After cleaning the debris from the throttle, if the wrench light still stays on, it’s recommended that you take your vehicle to a repair shop.

Wiring Issues

The vehicle’s computer is connected to the wire. Small wire damage in a truck can mess up its electrical components. Wiring problems can take many different forms, from loose connections to damaged or broken wires.

Because of this, the vehicle computer will display error codes and then illuminate the wrench light.

Solution: To find and resolve the issue, get your truck inspected and fixed by a certified mechanic.

If the wrench light is on, it could mean that it’s time for you to change your oil.

Solution: Once you’ve changed the oil, the light will turn off.

How to Reset the Wrench Light on Ford

The specific method for resetting the wrench light on a Ford vehicle can vary depending on the model and year of the vehicle. In general, however, there are several methods that may work, including:

How to Reset the Wrench Light on Ford

Method 1: Restart the Vehicle

Shut off for a few minutes and then restart the truck. This may temporarily turn off the wrench light.

Method 2: Disconnect the Battery

To reset the light, you can disconnect the battery for about 30 seconds and then reconnect it.

Method 3: Use an OBD2 Scanner

After trying the above two methods and the light turns back on, it means there is a problem with the powertrain.

So, you should use a diagnostic tool to read the codes stored in your vehicle’s computer system and determine the cause of the problem.

Step 1: Read the trouble codes

Follow these steps to learn how to use an OBD2 scanner:

  • Connect the scanner to the OBD2 port.
  • Turn on the ignition.
  • Press the “Read” button on the scanner.
  • Figure the problem by using the description provided by the scanner.

It’s important to ensure that the OBD2 scanner you use is compatible with your truck. If you’re unsure which scan tool is the best fit for your needs, you can check out my review on the Best OBD2 Scanners .

Step 2: Fix the problem

Depending on the code, you should replace or repair malfunctioning parts. If you are unsure how to do it, let a professional handle it.

Step 3: Clear the trouble codes

Once the issue has been fixed, you can use that tool to reset the light by pressing the “Erase” button on the scanner.

Now, turn the ignition off and then restart the truck and take it for a test drive (50-100 miles) to make sure your wrench light goes out.

I once used Autel MK808 to diagnose the problem with the wrench light in the 2010 Ford Escape. The scanner displayed the trouble code P040D, meaning EGR Temperature Sensor A Circuit High.

And I checked the exhaust gas temperature sensor with a multimeter and found out it had failed. Then, I removed and replaced it with a new one. After clearing the code, the light no longer illuminates.

What’s Next?

Don’t take the wrench light on your Ford lightly! It’s a warning sign that your vehicle’s Powertrain Control System has detected a problem.

Ignoring this light can result in expensive repairs and unsafe driving conditions. So, be proactive and keep your Ford running smoothly!

You can use an OBD2 scanner to diagnose the trouble codes associated with the light, which can help you identify the root cause of the problem.

Don’t miss my in-depth review on the Best OBD2 Scanners to choose the best one for your vehicle.

Moreover, pay attention to any dashboard symbols on your Ford, as they might hold hidden messages about your car’s performance and condition. Understanding these symbols can help you address potential issues early and ensure a safe journey.

History of stary oskol.

In 1300, there was a village called Ugly on the the territory of the present city. Today, it is one of the districts of Stary Oskol. At that time, the village was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was a border crossing point on the border with the Golden Horde.

The settlement of Oskol was founded by Russian Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich’s order (Ivan’s the Terrible son) to protect the southern borders of the Russian kingdom in 1593. The bulk of the population were peasants and the military.

In 1617, the town was burned by the Poles. In 1625, 1642 and 1677, the Crimean Tatars approached Stary Oskol, but could not capture it. The town was renamed Stary Oskol (meaning Old Oskol) in 1655, when the town of Tsaryov-Alexeyev, located down the river, was renamed Novy Oskol (New Oskol). Fortifications of the town existed until the 18th century.

More Historical Facts…

Gradually, Stary Oskol turned into peaceful, commercial and merchant town - the center of an agricultural district. Industrial production was represented mainly by enterprises on processing agricultural products.

In 1780, the town got its coat of arms. In 1784, Stary Oskol like most Russian towns of that time was rebuilt according to a new plan signed by Empress Catherine II. A large number of brick houses were built, mostly two-story buildings. The historic center of Stary Oskol has been preserved to our time.

In the second half of the 19th century, the town had a wide network of schools, libraries, reading rooms, printing, secondary schools. In 1894, construction of the railway began, trade and industry began to develop rapidly.

Until the 1930s, there were eleven Orthodox churches in Stary Oskol. During the Second World War, Stary Oskol was occupied by the Germans from July 2, 1942 to February 5, 1943. In 1954, the city became part of the newly formed Belgorod region.

In the late 1960s - early 1970s, in connection with the active development of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (the most powerful iron ore basin in the world), Stary Oskol became a major center of iron and steel industry.

Stary Oskol was declared a city of three top-priority Komsomol construction projects. The largest enterprises: Lebedinsky Mining and Processing Plant, Stoilensky Mining and Processing Plant, Oskolsky Electrometallurgical Plant became not only the city-forming enterprises, but also the largest industrial enterprises of the country. Stary Oskol experienced a new birth.

Today, Stary Oskol is a rapidly developing city, one of the leading mining and metallurgical centers of Russia.
