Car insurance guides

Jaunt was launched by insurance company BGL in 2019, as its temporary insurance arm. It offer instant cover from 1 hour to 30 days to people aged 18–75 with a valid driving licence issued by the UK, EU, EEA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or Switzerland.

As well as car insurance, Jaunt also offers van and motorhome insurance.

Jaunt’s policies are provided by DayInsure and underwritten by Aviva.

Like most temporary insurance cover providers, Jaunt only offers a comprehensive policy as standard. The policy includes:

  • Accidental damage cover for the vehicle
  • Fire and theft
  • New vehicle replacement (conditions apply)
  • Personal belongings up to £150
  • Windows and windscreen
  • Child seat cover
  • Replacement locks if keys are lost or stolen
  • Liability cover up to £5 million
  • Third party cover within the EU, the EEA and Switzerland
  • Personal accident cover up to £2,500 (or £5,000 per insurance year) for you and your partner
  • Vehicle recovery in the event of illness

You can get a policy for any timeframe between 1 hour and 30 days.

If you’re borrowing a car from a friend or family member, you’ll be glad to know that claiming on this policy won’t affect the no claims discount of the car’s owner.

Jaunt’s optional extras

While Jaunt’s policy comes with third party cover for trips to the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, you can add comprehensive cover to these destinations for an added premium.

The price of car insurance depends on many personal factors, like the make and model of the car, as well as the driver’s age and driving experience. This means prices vary from person to person.

That said, Jaunt’s website states that its temporary car insurance starts from 38p per hour and its temporary van insurance starts from 37p per hour.

If you need to report an accident or make a claim, call 08000 156 166 (+44 161 866 4114 from abroad). This will take you to Aviva’s claims handling service, available 24/7.

You must let your insurer know about any accident or incident resulting in a claim as soon as possible after it happens. An excess will apply to most claims (the amount will vary according to your circumstances).

You can call Jaunt’s support team on 0333 009 0701.

Lines open Monday to Thursday 9am–5pm, Friday 9am–4pm, Saturday 9am–5pm (closed for lunch 12.30pm–1.30pm) and Sunday 9am–4pm (closed for lunch 12.30pm–1.30pm).

You can also email [email protected].

When you take out a Jaunt policy, you can set up your own account to save and manage your details.

However, there won’t be much policy management to do, as Jaunt’s cover cannot be extended or renewed. The only way to add more days to your cover is to take out a new policy.

Similarly, once you’ve paid for your insurance, you can’t change any details. To change something, you need to cancel your insurance and set up a new policy.

You can cancel your policy at any time by emailing [email protected] with your policy reference number. If your insurance hasn’t started yet, you’ll get a full refund. If your cover has started, you can get a refund for the unused premium, provided there have been no claims or incidents likely to lead to a claim.

On customer reviews platform Trustpilot, Jaunt has 4.6 out of 5 stars and a rating of “Excellent”, based on more than 30 reviews (as at October 2020).

Customers praise the fast and easy-to-use quote process and helpful service.

  • Cover for windows and windscreen included as standard
  • Third party cover for EU, the EEA and Switzerland
  • Cancel any time and be refunded for unused premium
  • Only one optional extra available, so limited opportunity to personalise the policy
  • No option to make changes to the policy

Jaunt provides a decent comprehensive option for temporary car cover. Replacing the windows, windscreen and locks is included as standard, which is not always the case.

This isn’t the most flexible policy on the market, both in terms of optional add-ons and the ability to make changes to your details once you’ve purchased the cover. However, you can cancel any time and even get a refund for premium you’ve not used.

If the benefits on offer suit what you need, and you don’t think you’ll need to make any amendments, Jaunt’s policy can be a good option for you. Get started by visiting Jaunt’s website and sign up for an account. If you have read this review and decided that Jaunt is not for you, you can also compare other temporary car insurance policies on the market.

Bgl launches new short-term car insurance brand jaunt.

jaunt insurance

Insurance company BGL has launched a short-term car insurance brand called Jaunt which enables drivers to take out a comprehensive car insurance policy for someone else’s vehicle for anything from an hour to 30 days.

BGL said there is increasing demand for short-term insurance on borrowed vehicles, with people borrowing cars from friends and family for short trips or to move house.

Taking out a temporary car insurance policy means there’s no risk to the driver or owner’s no-claims discount in the event of a claim, and no impact on the annual policy on the vehicle.

The policy’s launch is being supported by an advertising campaign targeting prime London Underground stations and tube carriages, together with a digital campaign. Policies are provided in partnership with Dayinsure and underwritten by Aviva.

Mark Townsend, managing director of BGL’s motor and home portfolio, said: “We’ve designed Jaunt with the customer in mind from the outset. This fun, engaging brand taps into the flexibility today’s drivers are looking for, allowing them to share the use of family and friends’ vehicles safe in the knowledge that they can quickly and simply secure short-term comprehensive insurance whenever they like.

“Taking out a short-term policy through Jaunt will allow customers to take off spontaneously on a weekend break or use a parent’s car while visiting for the weekend, as well as being useful in other scenarios such as moving home, transporting furniture, collecting a new car, sharing long drives or travelling to student accommodation.”

Shop around

Jaunt isn’t the only brand offering car insurance by the hour or day. Cuvva, the AA, Dayinsure, and the RAC all offer similar policies.

It’s a good idea to shop around if you need this type of policy, as they can work out expensive compared to simply adding a named driver to an existing insurance policy.

For example Jaunt would charge £145 to cover a 45-year-old woman based in South London driving a Peugeot 108 for a week, with a £500 excess.

Rory Stoves, personal finance expert at uSwitch, said: “As with all types of insurance, it really pays to do your homework. Don’t assume that temporary cover is the best option. Speak to your insurer and find out what options they have available. It may be cheaper to be added as a named driver, on someone else’s policy.

“Although it is worth bearing in mind that if you do have to claim, this will affect their no-claims discount and could see their price increase at renewal. It is also worth bearing in mind what the excess on the policy is. Once you have all the information from an existing insurer, run a comparison and see which approach works out cheaper, before committing to taking out a policy.”

Jaunt is a god send.

Jaunt is a god send.. Last minute you need to pop out. You realise you need temporary insurance. For an hour or or four. Maybe a day. Rather than paying for the whole year it's worked out really well especially during covid pandemic with all these restrictions Pull out your phone go to jaunt fill out your details make a payment and within 15 minutes your ready to drive. It's that simple. I use jaunt regularly I refuse to use any one else. I highly recommend anyone looking to insure for a few hours or for a day to use jaunt.

Great service and great easy to use website. Bought a new car and tried to call my insurance company and add the car to my policy but was left on hold and then when I did get to speak to someone, it seemed to be too much hassle. What makes JAUNTIN' special and why choose JAUNTIN' for embedded and digital insurance?

  • We focus on niche and underserved products.
  • We provide various micro services that enable our partners to pick and choose where we can add the most value.
  • We white label our platform to the insurers’ brands.  We believe in leveraging the existing brand equity of our partners.
  • We love insurance carriers, brokers and agents alike.  Our platform is designed to be inclusive of all parties because we believe brokers and agents still provide a lot of value in the digital age.
  • Not just tech.  We bring large channel partners to the table as well.

Where is JAUNTIN' located?

Our HQ is in Silicon Valley North, also known as Toronto, Canada.  We also have subsidiaries in the U.S. with plans to expand further internationally.

What are the general steps taken to digitize an insurance product and get it embedded into a third party?

Without giving away too many secrets, here is a general outline of how things work with us.

  • We work with insurance companies to identify insurance products that are ideal for embedding.  The final product(s) are usually influenced from our existing channel partners or through research/case studies conducted by the insurer, JAUNTIN’ or both.
  • Once the insurance products are identified, JAUNTIN’ digitizes the insurance products so they can be distributed on a short term basis (if possible) and quote, bound and issued 100% digitally.  In parallel, we continue development on the channel partner side, alongside developing a longer term strategy on where the insurance products will be embedded.
  • Once the product is digitized, we work with the third party partners to embed the insurance products the way it makes most sense.
  • Once fully embedded and live, JAUNTIN’ manages the platform to ensure it’s running smoothly through constant monitoring, logging and infrastructure management.

Is JAUNTIN’ an insurance company?

No, JAUNTIN’ is a tech platform which partners with insurance companies to enable real time on demand and embedded insurance products. We automate the quote, bind and issue of insurance policies with a focus on niche areas like special events insurance, snow plow insurance, gig worker/freelancer products, and others.

What is embedded insurance?

According to Insurance Thought Leadership , embedded insurance is like the French fries of a meal deal; offered as part of another transaction at the moment of need or just included in the product or service of a third party.  The most famous recent example is Tesla offering car insurance as part of the vehicle purchase process.

Below are some other examples:

  • Snow plow insurance that is included as part of a professional association’s membership fees
  • Event insurance that is offered at part of an online planning tool or rental agreement
  • Business insurance that is included as part of setting up a new business entity

Embedded insurance is ideal for insurance companies that have products that compliment third party products/services or the purchase path of third party platforms.

What is digital insurance?

The definition of digital insurance has evolved over the decades, from simply being able to compare prices on a website all the way to the ability to get an hourly insurance policy from your phone.  At a minimum, for insurance to be considered ‘digital’ in this day and age, the insurance product must be able to be quoted, bound (user pays for it online) and issued (policy documents are sent to the user, usually via email) all digitally without the need to correspond with an agent, broker or personnel of an insurance company.

What are the benefits of digital and embedded insurance?

Accessibility – Digital and embedded insurance makes insurance products more accessible and affordable to a larger pool of the population that previously could not access or afford insurance coverage.

Cost Control – Digital and embedded insurance provides policyholders with more control, allowing the policyholder to better plan for insurance related costs and even tie insurance related expenses to planned/upcoming revenues.

Flexibility – Digital and embedded insurance enables insurance products to be more flexible instead of the traditional annual policy that doesn’t change throughout the year.  One of the building blocks of embedded insurance is enabling the insurance products to be distributed on a short term basis.

Speed – Digital and embedded insurance allows users to get coverage quickly, instead of having to wait weeks for coverage.  This allows users to get protected sooner, enabling them to take on new types of opportunities that require quick commitments, such as gig workers/jobs that usually happen ‘on demand’.

Who is digital insurance for?

In this day and age, there really is no reason that an insurance policy can’t be available digitally.  To remain competitive, we believe insurance companies need to make their insurance product more accessible and more easily available.  According to Insurance Thought Leadership , the protection gap, or the lack of access to the right insurance coverage at the right time, continues to widen each year.  The only way to close this gap, while allowing insurers to maintain profitability is to digitize and embed insurance.

What is digital insurance distribution?

Digital insurance distribution is the ability to fully quote, bind and issue insurance policies digitally over the internet.  By allowing users to get insurance themselves over the internet, it significantly reduces distribution costs and enables more flexibility and accessibility of insurance products.

What does "quote, bind and issue" mean?

Quote or quoting is the ability to get a price or estimate for a type of insurance coverage from an insurance company (or representative like an insurance agent or broker).

Bind or binding is the confirmation that a policy is bound and in force (per the agreed terms) by the insurance company, which either involves a payment of premium or an agreement to pay the premium in the near future.

Issue or issuance is when the insurance company issues (or sends) the policy documents to the policyholder.  In the digital age, it usually happens via email alongside the binding in real time.

Which kind of insurance products pair best with JAUNTIN’s platform?

JAUNTIN’ can work with almost any type of insurance product, however we have focused on niche products. Niche products we have experience with include: Travel insurance, snow plow insurance, special events insurance, dog walker insurance and others.  We believe niche insurance products are underserved overall and have the most potential when it comes to growth opportunities for an insurance company.

Specifically, if an insurance product is already digitized it is already halfway to being embeddable.

If we work with JAUNTIN’, will we still be able to market our product under our brand.

Yes. JAUNTIN’ only white labels its platform and have no intention of becoming a customer facing brand.  We believe the best way forward is to leverage the existing brand equity of our insurance partners, brokers and agents.  The policyholder would never know an insurance product is being distributed on the JAUNTIN’ platform (and we’re okay with that!).

What is Insurance-as-a-Service (IaaS)?

When it comes to digital and embedded insurance, insurance-as-a-service is when an organization (like JAUNTIN’!) provides an easy to implement insurance solution to another organization (like Grubhub) that traditionally wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) have insurance expertise.  Instead of the third-party spending months (even years!) trying to figure it out, they come to an organization like JAUNTIN’ for a solution that can be implemented in months or even weeks.  In turn, this provides the third party with additional value that they can provide to their end customers, giving them a competitive advantage.

How will my claims teams access the policy information on the JAUNTIN’ platform?

Insurance companies are provided with a customized portal which allows for easy access to policy holder information, alongside the ability to cancel/edit policies, manage agents/brokers, and resend policy documents to policyholders.

What is TULIP insurance and who should get it?

TULIP stands for Tenants’ and Users’ Liability Insurance Policy that provides special event liability coverage. It is used by venues that allow and/or rent their facilities to third parties for special events. It is ideal for users who do not normally carry a liability insurance policy (i.e. a couple getting married) and is offered on a daily or per event basis. It can also cover vendors, performers and exhibitors, depending on the insurance company. It protects both the event host (renter) and the venue against claims by others who may be injured or experience damage to property due to the event.

Events may range from low risk events such as business receptions and meetings, or weddings to high risk events including festivals, sports events, or concerts.

Radiators fail once more: Moscow suburbs residents appeal to Putin

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.
