Who Is Arnel Pineda?

After a series of unfortunate events in his childhood, Arnel Pineda found success in Asia as the front man for the group The Zoo. In 2007, he was discovered by Journey guitarist Neal Schon, after a series of YouTube videos were posted of him covering American songs, including the famous hit, "Dont Stop Believin'." In December 2007, Pineda became the new lead singer of Journey. His is noted for having a strikingly similar sound to former Journey front man Steve Perry.

Troubled Childhood

Arnel Pineda was born on September 5, 1967, in Sampaloc, Manila, in the Philippines. Throughout his childhood, Pineda endured grave misfortune. When he was just 13 years old, his mother, who was 35 at the time, passed away after a long battle with heart disease. Her medical costs left the family in serious debt, and Pineda's father could no longer provide for Pineda and his three younger brothers, Russmon, Roderick and Joselito.

While relatives were able to take in his brothers, Pineda was left on his own. He spent the next few years homeless, often sleeping outside in public parks and scraping for any food or water that he could afford. When possible, he would stay at a friend's house, who offered him a cot outside. Eventually, Pineda was forced to quit school and take up odd jobs collecting scrap metal and bottles at the pier and selling newspapers to support his family.

Early Career

Pineda's love of music started at a young age. He began singing at just five years old, and had entered many singing contests as a child. In 1982, when he was 15, Pineda was introduced to a local band called Ijos, and was encouraged by his friends to try out as their new lead singer. He sang the Beatles' "Help" and Air Supply's "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All." Although they were concerned with his lack of training, Ijos members were wowed by Pineda's powerful voice, and took him on as the new front man of the band. One of the band member's friends even offered to pay Pineda's salary, 35 pesos a night, out of his own pocket, and Pineda was offered a tiny room to sleep under the guitarist's front stairs.

In 1986, some members of Ijos joined together to form the new pop-rock band Amo. The group found success covering songs by hit groups Heart, Queen and Journey. In 1988, they turned heads when they won the Philippines' leg of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest. Although they were disqualified in the finals due to a technicality, the event was broadcast on TV in Asia, widening their fanbase. The band continued performing at popular clubs and arenas around the Philippines.

In 1990, the members re-grouped yet again, under the new name Intensity Five, and re-entered the contest. The band came in as runner up and Pineda won the Best Vocalist Award. After a series of unfortunate health problems in the early '90s, including the brief loss of his voice, Pineda re-emerged in 1999 with a new solo album with Warner Brothers. The self-titled album had several hits in Asia.

After brief stints with a few different bands, Pineda found success again in 2006 with The Zoo, a band that he formed with Monet Cajipe, a guitarist/songwriter who had been in all his bands during over the previous 20 years. The Zoo performed at several popular clubs in the area and, in 2007, released an album by MCA Universal titled Zoology . Soon the band began covering songs by groups such as Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and more, with more than 200 performances uploaded to YouTube.

On June 28, 2007, Neal Schon, guitarist and member of the band Journey, saw a video of Pineda on YouTube and immediately contacted him. The band had been looking for a new lead singer, and Pineda's voice sounded strikingly similar to Steve Perry, Journey's legendary former front man. After speaking with Schon on the phone, Pineda made arrangements to fly to the United States and audition with the band in San Francisco. On December 5, 2007, Pineda was welcomed as the band's new lead singer.

Right away, Pineda went on tour with the band, performing two shows in Chile and two in Las Vegas. Both were a huge success. After a series of guest show appearances and magazine features, Pineda gained popularity within the American public. On June 3, 2008, the newly organized Journey released their first album, Revelation , which came in at No. 5 on the U.S. charts. The album was their highest charting album since Trial by Fire (with Steve Perry), and reached platinum status by October 2008.

Soon after the album's release, the band continued touring around the world with Pineda. The documentary, Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey , slated to be released in 2012, will chronicle the band's "Revelation Tour," and Pineda's first years with the band.

Personal Life

When he is not on tour, Pineda resides in the Philippines with his wife, Cherry, their children, Cherub and Thea. He has two other sons—Matthew, 19, and Angelo, 13—from past relationships.

George Tickner, Founding Member of Journey, Dead at 76

George Tickner, a founding member of the rock group Journey, has died at 76. He was the original rhythm guitarist and co-wrote several Journey songs. “Journey Junkies, I have some very sad news,” Neal Schon , Journey’s lead guitarist, wrote on social media . “Journey’s original rhythm guitarist and songwriting contributor on their first three albums has passed away.” He added, “Our condolences to his family and friends, and to all past and present band members. So heartbreaking.” In another slide, Schon said, speaking to Tickner, “Thank you for your incomparable contributions to Journey’s early years.” Tickner was a performer on the first Journey album, Journey , and has songwriting credits on the next two, Look into the Future and Next .

Tickner began his music career as a member of the band Frumious Bandersnatch, named after the Lewis Carroll poem “The Jabberwocky.” He then formed Journey in 1973 with fellow Frumious Bandersnatch member bassist Ross Valory, alongside lead guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie, and drummer Prairie Prince, though Prince was never on record as he quit the band a few months in. The four, along with new drummer Aynsley Dunbar, put out their first record, Journey , in 1975. Tickner left the band shortly thereafter for medical school, attending Stanford University on a full ride. He was still involved in the music industry while working as a doctor, co-founding a recording studio with Valory called the Hive. He reunited with the band in 2005 when Journey received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Steve Perry: ‘My Heart Bleeds Daily to Be in Front of People And to Sing for Them’

Steve Perry has kept a low public profile ever since he shared a lockdown rendition of the 1963 Beach Boys classic “In My Room” in April, but he tells Rolling Stone that since that time, he’s been busy creating new music. “I have a studio and I’m always writing and always recording stuff,” he says. “I have lots of music, so much stuff.”

First up is an acoustic version of his 2018 comeback LP Traces that he plans to release on December 4th. “It’s eight songs from the Traces record done acoustically and I’m really proud of it,” he says. “It’s called Traces Alternate Versions and Sketches . I cut the vinyl in Abbey Road. I’m really pleased with the sonics and I’m really pleased with the simplicity of the song and the lyric and the chords, which is basically what it’s stripped down to.”

Perry dropped out of the public eye in 1998 when he was sidelined by a hip injury and Journey opted to hire a new vocalist to take his place. “I had my time,” he says, “and I was very pleased with all the history I was fortunate to be around and I was proud of my musical contributions to any of it.”

He was drawn back to music after losing girlfriend Kelly Nash to breast cancer in 2012. “I made a promise to her that I would not go back into hibernation,” he says. “If something was going to happen to her, she asked that I wouldn’t do that because she felt it would make everything for naught. Those were her words. I kept that promise.”

He released Traces in 2018 and went on an extensive media tour to support it, but he didn’t play any live shows. Perry last toured in 1995 and the only time he’s played to a live audience since then took place in 2014 when he joined the band Eels at three shows.

“E [Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett] and I became friends and he kept busting my balls saying, ‘When are you going to come out and just sing a couple of songs on our little tour?'” Perry recalls. “We’d always laugh, but I’d always go to his rehearsals because I love the band. He said, ‘Is this the year you’re going to do it?’ I said, ‘OK, what do you want to do?’ We worked up a bunch of songs and lowered the keys so I’d feel comfortable.”

The first appearance took place May 25th, 2014, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. Perry joined Eels for their original tune “It’s a Motherfucker” before closing the show with the Journey tunes “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”

“Oh, my God,” Perry says as he thinks back to that night. “I forgot what it was like to be in front of people. I had forgotten that this voice [I have onstage] doesn’t belong to me. In a studio, I can probably get 80 or 90 percent of it. But that extra 10 or 20 percent only happens in front of a crowd.”

The three Eels appearances raised fan expectations that Perry might finally return to the road. It hasn’t happened so far, but the singer says that a tour remains a real possibility. “It’s always been on my mind,” he says. “My heart bleeds daily to be in front of people and to sing for them.”

One thing holding him back is the physical toll any tour would take on his body. “I’ve got some physical injuries from touring,” he says. “It’s a tough thing, touring. People don’t realize. It’s like sports. I’m watching baseball these days and there’s injuries. People’s backs and necks start to go out. It’s a young man’s game, but I do miss it.”

During Perry’s long absence from the road, Journey reinvented themselves as a touring powerhouse, especially after Arnel Pineda took over on vocals in 2008. But it’s been a contentious journey marked by persistent band infighting. Earlier this year, the band parted ways with drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory after a business dispute over the band’s copyright.

“I have no clue what that’s all about,” Perry says when the matter comes up. “I’ve been out of that band since May of 1998.”

When told that fans continue to fixate on his tenure in the band and pray for some sort of reconciliation, he laughs. “I don’t know what people think rock & roll is about,” he says. “Are we supposed to be like Bo Peep, sheep herders that are kind and loving? No. We bump heads like motherfuckers. But from that comes beautiful music like ‘Open Arms’ and other songs.”

Still, fans will likely never let go of the fantasy that everything can go back to the way it was in 1981 when it seemed like the band was in harmony and singing “Kumbaya” together offstage. “I don’t understand what these people base their thinking on,” he says. “There never was any ‘Kumbaya’ with us. But were the Chicago Bulls singing ‘Kumbaya’? How about the [San Francisco] 49ers with Bill Walsh? What are we talking about here?”

For now, Perry is focusing strictly on his own career, far away from the battles of Journey. “The acoustic Traces is going to close the Traces chapter,” he says. “Then I’m opening up another chapter next year at some point.”

Steve Perry’s Cancer Battle

“Three weeks ago a routine mole was taken off my face and the lab report came back Melanoma skin cancer,” he wrote.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and it originates in the same cells that give your skin, hair and eyes their color. It can develop from an existing mole or appear as a dark or pink growth on the skin even in places on the body that never or rarely see the sun. This disease accounts for about 1% of all skin cancers , but it can be very dangerous if left untreated.

Examining Your Skin for Melanoma: Remember ABCDE

"Melanomas are the deadliest type of skin cancer because they have a tendency to spread to other parts of the body," Dr. Anna Pavlick , medical oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine, previously told SurvivorNet.

It’s unclear exactly what stage of melanoma Perry had, but treating stage 1 melanoma usually consists of a simple, in-office surgical removal by a dermatologist. When the cancer has spread beyond .08 mm in thickness , patients need an operation that is more involved.

“I’ve had two surgeries in two weeks to remove all the cancer cells and I’ve been told they think they got it all and no other treatments are required,” Perry wrote.

Although his cancer news was positive overall, Steve Perry’s 2013 post also included a heart-wrenching story about his late partner and her cancer battle.

When Perry first saw Kellie Nash, it was love at first sight. He was sitting in an editing room with a friend, Patty Jenkins, as she worked on a Lifetime breast cancer special when Perry noticed the Ph.D. psychologist in the opening scene.

The Toughest Conversations: Losing a Partner to Cancer

“When the scene was over I said to Patty, ‘Can you roll to the top of that opening scene for me?’ Patty asked, ‘Is something wrong?’ I said, ‘No. I want to see something,'” Perry wrote.

“As the camera again crossed Kellie’s smile I asked her to freeze right there.……. I asked Patty who that was. She said, ‘That’s Kellie Nash, a PHD Psychologist who was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a double mastectomy and she’s doing a cameo appearance.'”

That’s when Perry asked Jenkins to send Nash an email asking if she’d like to go on a date. Jenkins agreed but told Perry about the reality of Nash’s situation: She was currently fighting breast cancer that had returned as stage 4 and spread to her lungs and bones after eight months of remission.

“I was frozen……. I didn’t know what to do…….. I had lost my mom, dad, grandparents that raised me and I was an only child so my first thought was to maybe not send the email; then my heart said, Maybe we could be friends or maybe she could be my shrink,” he explained. “So I said, ‘Please send it.'”

Nash happily obliged and gave Perry a call. In a couple weeks, they were on their first date, and the rest was history.

“I never felt like this before……. I had finally found her. She’s real and she’s right in front of me,” Perry wrote. “We started seeing each other and Yes, we both knew that we were meant to be together.

“My life was forever changed in ways I will explain at another time but it was all because of my Kellie.”

Nash went courageously in and out of treatments, but she eventually passed away from the disease on Dec. 14, 2012. Although the two were together for just 1.5 years, Perry said “it was a lifetime of love packed into every moment.”

“She was so strong, so courageous and we really loved each other so very much,” he wrote. “I’ve been trying to grieve and not run from this loss so for the last 5 months that’s what I’ve been doing along with recalling everything being in Love with Kellie taught me.”

Former Journey frontman, Steve Perry, reveals why he left the rock band and how he has rebuilt his life post-rock-and-roll. (CBS)

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry revealed in a new interview why he left the iconic band in the late '90s.

The rock 'n' roll star, who is set to appear Sunday on "CBS This Morning" in an interview with Tracy Smith, said he made the decision to leave the band after he fell out of love with music and wanted to embark on a new life journey.

The singer, who is known as the voice behind one of the band's biggest hits, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” also said that he was nursing a bad hip during the time he was considering leaving the band. Despite his bandmates urging him to fix his hip so they could continue rocking, Perry ultimately realized that it wasn't just his hip in the wrong place.

“It was really your heart, not your hip,” Smith says during the interview.

“It was really my heart,” Perry responds.

After leaving the band, Perry returned home to Hanford, Calif., and started a new life not centered on music.

“I stopped singing,” Perry tells Smith. “Completely, Tracy, I swear.”

And moving forward, the once-rocker found love with psychologist Kellie Nash.

Perry shared that the pair were connected through mutual friends, but at the time, sadly, Nash was battling late-stage breast cancer. Nash died in October 2012 and Perry credits her for inspiring him to make music again.

After mourning her death for two years, the former Journey member returned to the studio.

Though the singer has rediscovered his love for music, don't expect Perry to take a step back and reunite with his former bandmates. The 69-year-old told Smith that he plans to keep moving forward.

“I can only answer that question with the truth: that I love going forward. I love going to the edge of what’s next,” he says.

Steve Perry Gives His Honest Opinion on New JOURNEY Singer Arnel Pineda

During a recent conversation with SiriusXM, classic Journey vocalist Steve Perry talked about the band’s new singer Arnel Pineda , who’s been a member of the fold since 2007.

Steve reached the topic while discussing Journey ‘s 2017 Rock Hall induction, saying (via Blabbermouth ):

“When I walked out there, that was a real thrill. They had a whole worked-up thing – they had a big teleprompter, and I said, ‘F that.’ I pulled out my piece of paper. I said, ‘I got some things to talk about here,’ and I just sort of did my thing. The fans, they were so wonderful.”

Asked on why he didn’t perform at the ceremony, Steve replied:

“I’m not in the band. I haven’t been in the band for quite some time. Arnel’s been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He’s a sweet kid – he’s a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It’s his gig.

“There was a gentleman who we recently lost named Harry, part of the management team. Harry was there with me and he said, ‘Steve, listen, I don’t know if you know, but Arnel’s running up and down the halls. He heard you’re here, backstage.’

“I said, ‘Well, where is he?’ He said, ‘I think he’s outside.’ I said, ‘Okay, I’ll come out.’ I walked out and he was there, and he comes up to me… there was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [Laughs] He’s got the gig. It’s his gig. He’s doing great.”

George Tickner, original guitarist and co-founder of Journey, dies at 76

Journey is mourning the loss of one of its original members. Guitarist George Tickner, who co-founded the rock band in 1973, has died. He was 76.

Lead guitarist Neal Schon announced his bandmate’s death Tuesday on Facebook. Schon, 69, said Tickner “will be missed immensely!”

“George ... thank you for the music. We will be paying tribute to you on this page indefinitely,” Schon said in his Facebook tribute post . “Our condolences to his family and friends, and to all the past and present band members. So heartbreaking..I think we need to do a group hug.”

Journey guitarist Neal Schon is taking legal action against bandmate Jonathan Cain for performing ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ at a November event for Donald Trump.

Tickner, who was born in New York on Sept. 8, 1946, was a former rocker with the San Francisco band Frumious Bandersnatch with bassist Ross Valory. In 1973, Tickner and Valory formed Journey with Schon and drummer Prairie Prince.

Shortly after Journey released its debut album, “Journey,” in April 1975, Tickner departed the group to “attend Stanford University on full scholarship” to pursue a medical degree, according to Schon.

Tickner continued to pursue music after his Journey days, establishing the Hive recording studio with Valory. Tickner, Valory and keyboardist Stevie “Keys” Roseman also created the band VTR and released its sole album, “Cinema,” in 2005.

Schon did not reveal additional details about Tickner’s death, including a cause or survivors. He did remember his late bandmate Wednesday with music.

“Some smooth Strat to EZzzzzzz your soul. Prayers for George,” Schon captioned an Instagram video of himself playing guitar to a slow song. The official Journey Instagram account reposted Schon’s video to its story on Thursday.

George Tickner, the co-founder and original guitarist for Journey, has died at the age of 76.

News of Tickner’s death was confirmed by co-founding member Neal Schon on social media.

No cause of death has been given at this time.

“Journey Junkies, I have some very sad news. George Tickner, Journey’s original rhythm guitarist and songwriting contributor on their first three albums, has passed away. He was 76 years old,” Schon, 69, wrote on Facebook Thursday.

“Godspeed, George… thank you for the music. We will be paying tribute to you on this page indefinitely.”

He continued, “Our condolences to his family and friends, and to all past and present band members. So heartbreaking. I think we need to do a group hug, JJ’s.”

The Grammy-nominated rock band has  sold over 100 million albums  — and the stadium anthem “Don’t Stop Believin’” has surpassed 1 billion  Spotify  streams.

Twenty-five of Journey’s songs — including “Open Arms,” “Who’s Crying Now” and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” — charted on the Billboard Hot 100.  

“ Journey’s Greatest Hits ” is  one of three albums  ever to spend 600 weeks on the Billboard 200 — joining Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” and Bob Marley and the Wailers’ “Legend.”

Tickner, Santana’s Schon, and bassist Ross Valory joined forces in San Francisco to form the band together back in 1973.

At the start, Tickner was a major contributor and the original bass guitarist before eventually focusing on just the guitar.

Gregg Rolie and The Tubes’ Prairie Prince were also there for the forming of the band, with its first performance taking place on New Year’s Eve that year.

Prior to founding Journey, Tickner was a member of the psychedelic rock band Frumious Bandersnatch with his pal and co-member Valory.

Journey headed out on the road on their US “Freedom Tour” at the start of this year, and were supported by Toto.

The band’s current lineup features Schon as lead guitarist, Jonathan Cain   on the keyboard, Arnel Pineda as the lead vocalist, Jason Derlatka on the keyboard, Deen Castronovo on drums, and Todd Jensen as the bassist.

Tickner left Journey following the release of its eponymous debut album in 1975 to pursue a career in medicine.

He secured a full scholarship at Stanford Medical School and was said to be writing music and performing as a hobby on the side.

In January 2005, he joined other members of the band to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Journey frontman Arnel Pineda breaks silence over band feud

Lead singer of American rock band Journey , Arnel Piñeda , can no longer hold back from talking about the feud between two of his bandmates that broke out earlier this year and became public.

Tension continues to brew within the band up to now amidst Journey's ongoing 50th anniversary Freedom tour , fueled further by misleading reports spreading like wildfire across social media.

Arnel, who is not involved in the legal financial dispute between guitarist Neal Schön and keyboardist Jonathan Cain , found himself caught up in another issue after the Facebook post of Neal's wife Michaele Sch ön made the rounds online.

She shared (published as is), "TWO BAND MEMBERS of the Journey current LINE UP ARE 'adamant NO' against Gregg Rolie to return.

"Neal Schön and Gregg ROLIE will be somewhere Together at least one time this Year in Honor of what they began in 1972 .

"Faith, let’s ask God to find a way for them. let’s pray for forgiveness for those who hurt Gregg ROLIE and hope they learn what spirituality is someday .We all love you !!"

After the post went viral, fans were prompted to theorize that the two band members opposing Gregg Rolie's return are Arnel and Jonathan.

Airing his side for the first time, Arnel took to Twitter on January 13, 2023: "you people are unbelievable…

"whoever’s spreading rumor about me regarding the #GregRollie issue?are maliciously ignorant..im not gonna stoop down to your level.."

Then again on February 5, 2023, he dropped two posts addressing the negative press he continues to get to this day.

He wrote (published as is), "m with the band to sing the legacy..if some of them are tired of me being with them,with all means,they can fire me anytime..

"and don't lecture me about spiritual BS..#walkthetalk"

His follow-up tweet read: "all i know? is #ivepaidmydues so stop reminding me where i came from..coz it's in my heart everyday..

"you just don't pay attention..im not a slave..im a human being like anybody else..

"#wrongiswrong #rightisright that simple.."

In an attempt to quash the worsening band conflict, Arnel once again tweeted three days later on February 8, 2023: "so much hatred people..we're on the brink of WWIII..

"lets just spread LOVE...

"don't you think its better to die being loved that being hated? [heart emojis]"

Filipino American frontman Arnel Pineda of the popular rock group Journey is at the center of controversy over a possible reunion of some band members.

The Music Times reports the bickering began when guitarist and vocalist Neal Schon suggested that founding band member and lead vocalist Greg Rolie return for the 50th-anniversary tour.

That plan was nixed, but when Schon’s wife Michaele publicly commented on social media that two Journey band members vetoed the idea, Pineda became irritated, Bravewords reported .

Some fans immediately blamed Jonathan Cain and Pineda for blocking Rolie’s return.

“You people are unbelievable…whoever’s spreading rumor about me regarding the #GregRollie issue are maliciously ignorant..im not gonna stoop down to your level,” said the vocalist at the time,” Pineda wrote.

He then went further, suggesting the band could get rid of him if they didn’t like him.

“If some of them are tired of me being with them, with all means, they can fire me anytime,” he wrote defiantly.”

That’s when former Journey frontman Jeff Scott Soto chimed in.

“You have NOTHING or NO ONE to answer to brother, you’re a kind, gentle and huge heart with a huge talent to match, it’s the age-old crap when you achieve success and happiness, there are many who want to break you down! Stay the course, YOUR course, I’m proud to be your friend,” said the vocalist.

Without Pineda Journey would have been lost and forgotten long time ago. I like Pineda because he is the Best Singer, and because he is from philippines. He gives 100percent on stage and keeps the Journey alive.

Journey has always been an awesome band, but let’s face it without Arnel Pineda they would not have continued on for this long successfully. That’s my opinion and I believe I’m right I think he is a monumental talent And a shining example of integrity in a human being, compassionate, caring, and truly devoted to keeping journey at the forefront. Without him, I do not believe it could have been accomplished certainly not on this level for this continued amount of time. Why can’t people just grow up and acknowledge his contribution. I’m not saying the other artists are not equally as contributing and talented. It takes all of them together to create this band. It’s not just one individual, but without each one of these talents, combined together, they would not be the band journey and that’s reality. All this other nonsense really just has no place even being validated by exposure. I have been listening to this band since they first came out when I was a teenager in high school, so I think I’m qualified to to deliver an educated opinion as well as being correct .

Steve can’t sing the songs anymore. That’s the main reason he kept turning down invitations to come back. Arnold even told him he would step down. No way he can possibly sing those songs. He doesn’t have the voice anymore. He has to sing softer music without all the highs. So without him Arnel is the only one that can sing them and can sing even higher notes if needed but he tries to keep everything as original as possible without Steve. In my opinion much better Singer but I also understand that the original singer is always the sound of the band. I don’t like AC/DC anymore. Bon Scott is AC/ DC no matter how well the band is doing now. And all the other bands. But something about Arnel makes me feel different. And he has been with the band longer than Steve or anyone else. A lot of this is my opinion. The rest is truth.

Steve Perry was smart to leave Journey, he made the best choice ever. I do understand the reason Steve left, it was all the childish drama he saw and in a old Interview Steve say’s it was not up to Neil or Jon to Force him into his Hip Replacement Surgery, it is and was A big desision for Steve. However so glad Steve is no longer part of this Drama. And yes all member’s should call it by Retiring 50 Year’s it is A long run. Little Foot Note NO ONE COULD HAVE EVER REPLACED THE VOICE. àka Steve Perry he was Journey, Bless Him.

Sadly, you are witnessing first-hand the effects of Rock Star narcissism, greed and self-absorbed egomania. You fill Steve Perry’s shoes nicely and I appreciate your contributions as a contributing songwriter on the Freedom album. The dysfunction that exists in the band is the result of decades of ‘It’s All About ME!!!” by others and there is nothing you can do for those people; take care of yourself, get some counseling for a healthier perspective and don’t let anyone talk BS to you, mate. Without the brilliant and unmistakable sound of one Steve Perry, Journey is now merely a cover band. If you think I’m wrong next time while out In public and you hear a Journey song such as “Don’t stop believing” listen to who the voice singing it is. It is Steve Perry. Like in any juke box or even the song playing at the horrible series ending of the show The Sopranos. Steve Perry is thee sound of Journey not just some times but FAITHFULLY!

Neal’s wife needs to keep her nose and mouth out of the bands business. Does Neal have to have his wife fight his battles? Let the band members make the decisions ! If two members say no, than let the decision stand ! Hey Neal, ask your wife if she would she can replace your lead singer if you piss him off enough? Grow up, do what you do best, make music!

Steve Perry was the hit-maker. He was the force that drove Neil’s cool Santana-esque project into a multi-million dollar music machine. I can’t even believe what I’m hearing. So many of you summed it up: Journey was an incredible band in the 80’s and then they were lost forever; you never heard about them……until Arnel showed up. I took my wife to see them in Hawaii with the construction worker. Horrendous. Arnel brought them back to life. Stop whining

Judith Hill Sang With Pop Royalty. Now She Is Composing Her Own Story.

The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was close to Michael Jackson and Prince. After their deaths, her world crumbled and she had to rebuild on her own.

The first time the musician Judith Hill performed her anguished requiem “Black Widow” for an audience, she wept, right onstage.

The song’s title is an epithet that has been directed at her for years by tabloids and trolls because as a vocalist and artist, she had been close with two of pop’s biggest stars shortly before their deaths. She was Michael Jackson’s duet partner and performed at his televised memorial in 2009. And for two years before Prince’s fatal overdose in April 2016, she was his protégée, collaborator and more. They shared what she has called “an intense relationship” ; he told her he loved her.

Prince’s sudden, accidental death derailed her promising career — which he had been guiding — and she spiraled into deep grief, depression and self-doubt as online cruelty rained down. It took years before she was able to face what happened, personally or musically.

“It was a deep wound,” she said onstage at a recent showcase at Mercury Lounge in Lower Manhattan, after the soulful, fierce “Black Widow.” Then she brushed her tears away — “enough of that” — and soon started another number, “Dame De La Lumière,” a detailed tribute to her mother and grandmother, with a rippling, urgent chorus that has become her anthem: “Bad times make strong women.”

Both songs are on “Letters From a Black Widow,” her new record, due Friday. It is a concept album that reckons forcefully with her past — not just the boldfaced part, but also the myriad woes and distortions that conspired to make her feel fearful and less-than. The dozen tracks that finally tumbled out chart her path of self-reflection and forgiveness, with achingly personal lyrics paired with muscular funk, soul and blues, and backed by her shredding, soaring guitar. It’s a new reach for an artist known mostly for her acrobatic and emotional vocals ; she wanted her determined message to resonate, too.

“I felt unmuted,” she said, “like I was free to say something now, because I felt like I had really put a muzzle on myself for so long, and was just afraid. And it was very, very liberating to do that.”

Getting there involved therapy; a hallucinogenic trip to a hot springs with friends; and the guitar, which she first picked up in 2016, before Prince’s death. The instrument proved to be transformational. “It helped me work through the trauma,” she said in an interview earlier this year at her house in Los Angeles, where a Gibson, Strat and Taylor lined a newly built studio. If the piano, her lifelong instrument, was her melodic through-line, the guitar, on which she is self-taught, gave her a different vibe. “I do kind of see her as a panther,” she said, smiling. “She’s the warrior energy.”

Hill, who will turn 40 next month, was 4 when she wrote her first song, a gospel number. She grew up in a churchgoing musical firmament in Los Angeles: Her mother, Michiko Hill, was born in Tokyo and plays the keys, organ and piano; her father, Robert Hill, who is Black with roots in Alabama, is a bassist known as PeeWee. They worked with acts like Sly and the Family Stone and Chaka Khan. Now they tour in Hill’s backing band. “It’s a family affair,” as she put it at the New York show.

They live just down the road in Los Angeles, she said a few months ago. She was cozy in a pink sweater, sipping tea in the first home she has owned, her respite from the road. Fans and those in the industry who have been rooting for Hill know her peace is hard-won.

“As they say — now she can breathe,” said the singer Darlene Love, who has known Hill for years. They were both featured in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary “20 Feet From Stardom,” about background vocalists, for which they also earned Grammys.

Hill, fresh off being a competitor on “The Voice,” was an upstart then. “We called her the baby,” said Love, who started her career in 1960s girl groups. “We were looking at her to become the star out of this movie.”

Her ambitions were known, Love recalled. “I remember Stevie Wonder told her one time, you know, ‘Don’t get so caught up in singing background for me that you miss your shot’” at being the lead.

It started to seem like it would happen, especially when Prince took an interest in Hill after catching a TV interview where she named him as her dream collaborator. From 2014 to 2016, she jammed, recorded and performed with him, becoming a regular presence at Paisley Park , his estate outside Minneapolis. Together, they produced her debut album, “Back in Time,” in 2015. He met her parents.

Then he died, and everything unraveled. She shelved the video for her title track , on which he contributed guitar, bass, drums and vocals, and retreated to Los Angeles, awash in shock.

That’s when the online viciousness hit. “I got a lot of hate messages, some death threats. It got real dark,” she said. (And, she added, it’s still coming.)

The pop singer Daniel Bedingfield, a longtime friend of Hill’s, was part of the inner circle that tried to bolster her in the period after Prince’s death.

“I didn’t really know how it was going to go for a few years,” he said in an interview. “We’d be sitting at a restaurant, and then one of Prince’s songs would come on, and that would be the end of the day. And it was everywhere we went, all the time. A very rough moment.”

Though Hill continued to record and perform in the years that followed, she was having a crisis of conscience about her identity as an artist. “I struggled with really being able to feel like I was enough, or that my story mattered,” she said. “I always felt like my name only mattered because it was in relation to someone else.”

During the pandemic, Bedingfield (known for the early 2000s hit “Gotta Get Thru This” ) helped organize the hot springs camping trip that changed Hill’s outlook, with an assist from some magic mushrooms. While Hill’s friends were off on their own journey, “I went on a real full tilt spiritual trip,” she recalled. She had a vision of a mountain, looming; it symbolized everything she thought she had recovered from in therapy.

“It was very sobering to see that vision and just realize, wow, I’m still hurting,” she said. “I felt God’s basically saying to me: It was never your job to remove the mountain. It’s too big — you can’t move a mountain. Just allow it to be there.” That gave her permission to acknowledge her trauma, not try to run around it. “It was the first time I allowed myself to feel that way, because I kept trying to fix myself,” she said.

Her new album starts with that imagery: “I can feel the mountain,” she roars on the ballad “One of the Bad Ones.”

Her therapist, too, counseled her to face the “Black Widow” taunts through writing; she did it for herself, at first, with no thought of an audience. The song opens with plaintive piano and a whoosh like a cold wind blowing in. Her lyrics murmur of being hidden, then trapped. A spoken-word interlude is raw emotion, as a chorus of voices call her Black Widow and accuse her of killing two musical heroes. “That’s not my name!” she spits back. But then she crumbles: “Maybe it’s true.” A jagged guitar line arrives like a rescue; soft gospel-tinged humming closes it out.

As Hill composed — she wrote and produced the entire album herself — her joy in the production overcame her worry about publicly rehashing these experiences. Daniel Chae, a violinist and session string player for artists like Kacey Musgraves and Zach Bryan, said recording with Hill pushed him into new, harder territory: “Her arrangements were so complex, my jaw was on the floor.”

Hill’s goal with the album was for it to sound sophisticated but propulsive, especially live. She often starts writing with the bass line, “thinking about how I want us to rock onstage,” she said, “because we are a touring band.” Her father will add his flourishes on bass, along with her mother on the organ; their generational groove is rattling, marrow-deep — and danceable.

“Weaponizing funk is something I love to do,” Hill said, “because to me it feels like battle-cry energy.”

Sophia Whitehurst, one of her background singers, has been harmonizing with Hill since they were in a middle school church group. “At a young age, you knew that she was different,” said Whitehurst, who has performed with Lizzo at the Grammys. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her go off key, or lose control during the middle of a run, or anything. Her vocal strength is just out of this world — the range, the agility, the grit and soul behind it.”

At Mercury Lounge, center stage in boots and fringe, Hill closed her eyes as she tore into her guitar, erupting with powerhouse vocals. The effect was of an artist fully in command of her instrument and her gift. After her tearful “Black Widow,” the crowd — some members crying too — was briefly quiet, taking it in, then exploded into applause and bravos. Teon Brooks, a Brooklynite, didn’t know Hill’s story; he bought a ticket to the show after hearing “Dame De La Lumière” and was amazed at “the buffet” of Hill’s range. “She fed us,” he said.

For Hill, unleashing this music was release, and affirmation. “I realized," she said, “I’m a lot stronger than I thought.”

Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard Recap Their Journey Back to Reality TV on 'The Masked Singer'

T wenty-one years ago, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard  were rocketed to celebrity status when they became the final two contestants on American Idol's  second season. Over 24 million people cast their votes for them as individuals, with Ruben beating Clay. But now they return back to the network that gave them their start in FOX not against each other, but together. As the Beets, their slick harmonies wowed the judges, while simultaneously avoiding their guesses. Unfortunately, their reprise on a reality singing show did not give them the same success as 2002, as they were eliminated right before the quarterfinal.

The day after their reveal, Clay and Ruben spoke to Parade.com about their time on The Masked Singer .

I know you both had been leading very separate lives, including Clay, your foray into politics. And then you came together for a 20th anniversary reunion tour last year. So when did The Masked Singer  come into the picture?

Clay Aiken:

Ruben Studdard:  Not at all. I think that probably talking us out of it is probably the most accurate thing if we wouldn't have done it. Just because we enjoy performing together. We were already doing that. And I think it just worked out perfectly. Then we were on tour and we were in that space where we're already in the mode of being the "Ruben and Clay," the knockout punch.

Had either one of you been approached for The Masked Singer  prior to this season, given your affiliation with Fox reality from your Idol  days?

Clay:  I don't even know if I have. Because I had told agents and managers back in 2014 I'm not doing anything. So if they came to them, it didn't even get to me because I was it got nixed before it got to me. So I do not know the answer to that. But it happened exactly where it was supposed to happen as far as I'm concerned, because I think it was more fun. It was certainly more fun for me doing it with my friend, and I think we sounded good together.

I agree! To that point, were you surprised to be eliminated over Gumball and not make it to the finals?

Clay:  I was not surprised for a whole bunch of reasons. Not the least of which is the fact that I've never won anything in my life. 

Yeah, I know you have a history of second-place finishes on reality TV.

Clay:  And officially we're second place in Group B. But I had sort of secretly hoped for it. Because we had a tour date coming up, and we had no breaks at all. We had to get to Alaska. So going home was a slight blessing in disguise for me.

It's one thing to perform with your friend. It's another to do it while you're in a giant beet costume. What was that experience like?

Clay:  We were supposed to turn, but we didn't know which way to turn. So we didn't. We were told we could turn, but we couldn't. I mean, we couldn't see squat. And if you look at the costumes, as the root itself begins to form, that's where our head was. I mean, the eyes were down at our stomachs and the mouth was down by our waist. So those mics that we were holding were fake, too. And we had the Madonna mics. I think I'm probably wrong, but I think that most costumes, people actually can sing in a handheld microphone through the mouth hole of their costume. We were singing on those Madonna mics and having to keep our head set right. Because if we moved our head too much, the whole costume would [topple]. It was a lot. But you know, who gets to say they get to do those things? It was crazy. So I don't regret it. But we weren't thrilled while we were wearing them. And when we were finally unmasked, I think I got frostbite just from going 200 degrees inside that to all of a sudden the air conditioning hitting us.

The judges really couldn't figure out who you were, throwing out guesses of pairs from Brooks and Dunn to Zach Braff and Donald Faison to even Josh Groban and Brian McKnight. Are you happy when reacting to these wrong guesses that you're evading them? Or are you more ticked off that they're not recognizing your voice?

Clay:  It's interesting that you asked it the way you did. I mean, when we first stepped up there after "Home," I didn't want them to get us right. Because I thought, "Well, that'll ruin the whole surprise if they get us right." But then, when they absolutely did not come anywhere near getting us right, for a second. I was like, "Well, [expletive], do they think we're dead?!" [ Laughs .] So I mean, I know I haven't performed in a long time, but damn. So there was a little bit of that until it started becoming obvious the types of people they were guessing.

And I think this was the brilliance of us doing it together, that we were a duo on the stage. And they were obviously thinking, "We need to think of duos. KC and JoJo Brooks and Dunn, Dan and Shay." So they were thrown off. And we happen to know Ken Jeong is a huge Idol fan. So it's not like they didn't know. They were thinking of duos And "Ruben and Clay." Yes, those names go together in your head, but not as a duo. And I think that threw them off.

Ruben:  Also, I've watched the show before we were on it. And I've seen them guests my name and Clay's name a couple of times separately. So to your point, Clay, I think it kind of threw them off. They were thinking, if we were on the show, we'd probably be there solo.

Oh, don’t worry, we’re still looking at a summer of sequels (“Inside Out 2”), prequels (“A Quiet Place: Day One”) reboots (“Alien: Romulus”) and heroic — and violent — men in ridiculous costumes (“Deadpool & Wolverine”). But we may just get an original story or three, too.

Here’s a look at some of what’s coming to theaters and streaming services in the warmer months:

“The Fall Guy” | May 3 | Theaters:  Look for “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling to bring some leftover Kenergy to this action romp, based on the TV show that saw Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a stuntman who worked on the side as a bounty hunter. Now Gosling is Colt, a stuntman not far removed from a career-threatening accident who’s pulled into the case of a missing movie star. Emily Blunt,” who was a key player in Academy Award-winner “Oppenheimer” — the other half of the “Barbenheimer” craze — co-stars as a first-time movie director … and Colt’s ex-girlfriend. The cast also boasts Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s heavily rumored to be the next James Bond. Last but not least, “The Fall Guy” is helmed by David Leitch (“Bullet Train,” “Deadpool 2,” “Atomic Blonde”), who knows a bit about being a stuntman, as he was one, and about making movies that successfully blend action and comedy.

“The Idea of You” | May 3 | Prime Video: Michael Showalter, whose directorial credits include winners “The Big Sick” (2017) and “The Lovebirds” (2020), is at the helm for this romance about a 40-something single mother (Anne Hathaway) and a 20-something member of a boy band (Nicholas Galitzine). Showalter and co-writer Jennifer Westfeldt (“Kissing Jessica Stein”) adapted the book of the same name by Robinne Lee.

“Prom Dates” | May 3 | Hulu: Julia Lester and Antonioa Gentry star as best Defriends looking to have an epic senior prom — a goal in jeopardy when each breaks up with her date shortly before the big dance in this coming-of-age comedy directed by Kim O. Nguyen (“Never Have I Ever”).

“Tarot” | May 3 | Theaters: Your future looks bleak — that is if you’re a character in this scary movie in which members of a group of college friends start dying after having a tarot card reading. The cast is led by Harriet Slater (“Pennyworth”).

“Unfrosted” | May 3 | Netflix: Well, THIS is not nothing. Jerry Seinfeld makes his directorial debut, stars in and co-wrote this romp about warring cereal companies in the early 1960s. The crispy-and-sweet cast also boasts Melisssa McCarthy, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Peter Dinklage, James Marsen, Christian Slater and Bill Burr, among others.

“Mother of the Bride” | May 9 | Netflix: The father-of-the-bride formula has produced a number of movies over the years, and Netflix will try to flip the script a bit with Brooke Shields as the mother and Miranda Cosgrove (“iCarly) as the bride to be in this comedy directed by Mark Waters (“Freaky Friday,” 2004’s “Mean Girls”). (His previous effort was the gender-flipping “He’s All That” in 2021, so this really should be comfortable territory for him.)

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” | May 10 | Theaters: After a trilogy of solid movies in the “Planet of the Apes” reboot series, we jump ahead a few generations with this fourth entry. Apes are living in harmony as the planet’s dominant species, with humans relegated to the shadows. The apes are now ruled by the ambitious Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), who’s searching for valuable human technology. Meanwhile, a young chimp, Noa (Owen Teague), befriends a feral young female, Mae (Freya Allan), aka “Nova,” and the two go on a dangerous journey. Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner” trilogy) directs from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Foundation”).

“Back to Black” | May 17 | Theaters: Taken from the world tragically early — at age 27, like a few other forces in the world of music — British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse gets the biopic treatment with this film named after her hugely successful and critically acclaimed 2006 album. Marissa Abela (“Industry”) portrays Winehouse in the film helmed by “Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson, the wife of Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

“IF” | May 17 | Theaters: After directing two highly entertaining “A Quiet Place” movies, John Krasinski trades vicious aliens for something kinder and gentler: imaginary friends. While Krasinski is in the cast, Ryan Reynolds stars opposite young Cailey Fleming, whose Bea can see other kids’ imaginary friends, who need her help. Providing voice-work for said creative creatures include Steve Carell, Krasinski’s old buddy from “The Office,” along with the director’s wife, Emily Blunt, and other heavy hitters including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph and the late Louis Gossett Jr.

“The Strangers: Chapter 1” | May 17 | Theaters: If we’re following, this is the first part of a horror trilogy, with all installments helmed by Renny Harlin (“Die Hard 2”), that will serve as a trilogy to 2008’s “The Strangers” and its 2018 sequel, “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” both of which were at least co-written by Bryan Bertino. The latter is credited with the story for this new scare fest, in which a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) who, after car troubles, spend the night in an eerie town — specifically in a remote cabin — and, of course, are terrorized by some masked folks. If you’re not frightened half to death after this first new flick, fear not: The subsequent chapters both are expected to hit theaters in 2024.

“Thelma the Unicorn” | May 17 | Netflix: Musical artist Brittany Howard voices the titular creature in this animated adaptation of the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey. The voice cast also includes Will Forte and Zach Galifianakis.

“The Blue Angels” | May 23 | Prime Video: After this documentary spends a week in IMAX theaters — and, honestly, that’s surely the best way to experience it — it will soar into living rooms via Amazon’s streaming platform. Says a news release about this look at the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron and frequent air show headliner, “The immersive footage puts you in the cockpit for a firsthand view of the Blue Angels’ precision flying, while the aerial shots deliver a spectacular showcase of the breathtaking maneuvers that have made them the world’s premier jet team.” (Note to self: Make time to see this in IMAX.)

“Atlas” | May 24 | Netflix: In the latest from “San Andreas” and “Rampage” director Brad Peyton, Jennifer Lopez is Atlas Shepherd, a heroine out to stop a problematic artificial intelligence. The cast also features Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” | May 24 | Theaters: Are you ready to venture back into the sensory-overload post-apocalyptic environment writer-director George Miller gave the world in 2015 with “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This prequel/spinoff — the fifth installment in Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise — sees the talented Anya Taylor-Joy portraying a younger version of the titular character, portrayed memorably in “Fury Road” by Charlize Theron. Taylor-Joy’s Imperator Furiosa will butt heads — violently, we presume — with Chris Hemsworth’s Warlord Dementus in a film sure to deliver wild sights along with sound and overall fury.

“The Garfield Movie” | May 24 | Theaters: Chris Pratt voices our favorite lasagna-loving cat in this animated romp directed by Mark Dindal (“Chicken Little”).

“Summer Camp” | May 31 | Theaters: Three women whose friendship dates way back to summer school, played by Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, look to recapture the old magic at a camp reunion in this comedy, which also features Eugene Levy.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” | June 7 | Theaters: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as brave-and-brash cops for a fourth installment in this action-comedy franchise, and the directing tandem of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, aka Adil El Arbi, returns after helming the previous installment, 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life.”

“The Crow” | June 7 | Theaters: In this reboot of the story of the resurrected and avenging Eric Draven, aka The Crow, Bill Skarsgård takes over the titular role, first made famous by the late Brandon Lee in the 1994 film of the same name. Like that movie and those that followed, this new effort is based on the comic book series by James O’Barr. Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) directs.

“Hit Man” | June 7 | Netflix: In select theaters on May 24, the latest from director Richard Linklater (“Before Sunset,” “Boyhood”) sees Glen Powell (“Anyone but You”) doing his charming thing as a cop who regularly poses as a hit man — that is, as Powell’s Gary Johnson says, things get “complicated.” That’s when Adria Arjona’s Maddy Masters enters his life. Co-written by Linklater and Powell, this action-romance-comedy is based on a true story.

“Inside Out 2” | June 14 | Theaters: Riley, the young girl from 2015 Pixar Animation Studios hit “Inside Out,” is now a teen, which means (gasp!) new emotions. Returning emotions Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and Anger (Lewis Black) are joined by newcomers Envy (Ayo Edibiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and, perhaps most importantly, Anxiety (Maya Hawke). Other newcomers include Tony Hale and Liza Lapira, taking over the roles of Fear and Disgust, respectively. And Riely is now voiced by Kensington Tallman, while Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan return to voice her parents. All this internal emotional havoc will be orchestrated by Kelsey Mann, making his feature-directing debut, and Meg LaFauve, who wrote the screenplay after serving as a co-writer on “Inside Out,” which won the Academy Award for best animated feature in 2016.

“The Watchers” | June 14 | Theaters: Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, would seem to be a chip of the ol’ creepy filmmaking block — at least if the recently released trailer for this horror entry is any indication. Starring Dakota Fanning as a woman who becomes trapped in a mysterious forest, it is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine.

“Kinds of Kindness” | June 21 | Theaters: It was really decent of filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and actor Emma Stone not to keep us waiting for another collaboration after last year giving the world the cinematic treasure that is “Poor Things.” Among those joining the Academy Award-winner Stone on screen for this three-story affair will be Jesse Plemons and her “Poor Things” co-star Willem Dafoe.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” | June 28 | Theaters: It’s still, well, pretty quiet when it comes to details regarding this prequel to writer-director John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” (2018) and “A Quiet Place Part II” (2020). We know that a key player from the latter, Djimon Hounsou, is back, and he’s joined by actors Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff for this tale. It’s safe to say the movie — written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (“Pig”), who collaborated on the story with Krasinski — will take us back to the day of the invasion by ferocious aliens who don’t see so well but can attack upon hearing the slightest sound.

“Daddio” | June 28 | Theaters: Dakota Johnson plays a woman who gets into deep conversations with her cab driver (Sean Penn) in this drama.

“Horizon: An American Saga (Part One)” and “Horizon: An American Saga (Part Two)” | June 28 and Aug. 16 | Theaters: Directing for the first time since 2003’s “Open Range,” Kevin Costner also co-wrote and stars in this Western tale he’s been trying to bring to the big screen for just over a quarter of a century. The now former “Yellowstone” star has said he plans to make a four-part saga, but at least we’re getting these first two parts of “Saga” close together on the calendar. Telling a fictional story set before the Civil War about the expansion of the American West, “Horizon” also boasts cast members Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Giovanni Ribisi and many others.

“Despicable Me 4” | July 3 | Theaters: Our villain-turned-hero Gru (voiced as always by Steve Carell) would seem to have his hands full in the latest entry in this enduring animated franchise. His family keeps growing — in addition to wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and three adopted daughters, there’s now the trouble-making Gru Jr. — and characters voiced by Will Ferrell, Sofia Vergara and Joey King are out to get him. Back at the helm is Chris Remaud, who directed 2010’s “Despicable Me” and 2013’s “Despicable Me 2” has been known to give voice to one of those little yellow minions now and again.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” | July 5 | Netflix: Eddie Murphy reprises one of his most believed characters, street-smart, wise-cracking police officer Axel Foley, in this fourth “Beverly Hills Cop” installment. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are back, too, as California cops Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, respectively, but Axel — who’s out to uncover a conspiracy after his daughter (Taylour Paige) is threatened — has a new partner played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“Fly Me to the Moon” | July 12 | Theaters: Romantic sparks fly between characters played by Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in this comedy-drama set during the space race of the 1960s. Greg Berlanti (“Love, Simon”) directs.

“Touch” | July 12 | Theaters: Egill Olafsson stars in this tale of a man’s emotional journey to find a long-lost love before his own time runs out. Baltasar Kormákur (“Everest”) directs and co-wrote the screenplay.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” | July 26 | Theaters: The stakes appear to be of the universe-altering variety in this long-awaited third “Deadpool” entry, with Ryan Reynolds’ titular antihero going so far as to team up with old nemesis Wolverine — being played for the umpteenth time by Hugh Jackman — to try to save the day. Shawn Levy takes over directing duties after working with Reynolds on 2021’s “Free Guy” and 2022’s “The Adam Project,” but, despite those family-friendly titles and Deadpool now being controlled by Disney-owned Marvel Studios, “Deadpool & Wolverine” appears to have all the colorful language and over-the-top action we’ve come to expect from the franchise. Morena Baccarin returns as Vanessa, and newcomer Emma Corrin portrays the powerful mutant Cassandra Nova in this story, the co-writers of which include Reynolds and Levy.

“Didi” | July 26 | Theaters: This coming-of-age story about a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy (Izaac Wang) — a semi-autobiographical film from writer-director Sean Wang — made some noise at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” | Aug. 2 | Theaters: Positioned as a sequel to the 1955 children’s book of the same name by Crocket Johnson, this live action-meets-animation fantasy stars Zachary Levi — as a now-grown Harold, long the holder of a magical purple crayon — Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Zooey Deschanel, Alfred Molina and others. Carlos Saldanha (“Ferdinand”) directs.

“My Old Ass” | Aug. 2 | Theaters: We’re comfortable assuming the title of this comedy from writer-director Megan Park (“The Fallout”) — in which a girl (Maisy Stella) is warned by her future self (Aubrey Plaza) not to fall in love — tells us a lot about the tone we can expect.

“Borderlands” | Aug. 9 | Theaters: The television world has produced a couple of excellent video game adaptations of late in “The Last of Us” and “Fallout,” and the movies get another shot with this slice of irreverent sci-fi-action-comedy from director Eli Roth (“Hostel”). The ensemble cast is led by the unusual but appealing tandem of Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.

“It Ends with Us” | Aug. 9 | Theaters: Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni (“Jane the Virgin”) and Brandon Sklenar star in an adaptation of the romance novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. Baldoni, whose directorial credits include 2020’s “Clouds,” also is at the helm of this one.

“Trap” | Aug. 9 | Theaters: The internet — or, more accurately, some people on the internet — suspect this next film from M. Night Shyamalan is another fitting within the universe that began with his twisty 2000 hit “Unbreakable.” Regardless, we mostly like what the director has been putting out into the world in recent years, so we’re looking forward to this original tale of a dad (Josh Hartnett) who, while talking his daughter to a big concert, realizes he’s suspected by authorities of being the serial killer knowns as “The Butcher.”

“Alien: Romulus” | Aug. 16 | Theaters: With 2016’s “Don’t Breathe,” director Federico Alvarez showed he knows how to build tension — a prerequisite for helming a film in the long-running “Alien” franchise. This entry is said to be set between the two most-loved movies in the series, the saga-launching “Alien” (1979) and its 1986 sequel, “Aliens” — directed, respectively, by Ridley Scott and James Cameron. It doesn’t sound like the most original of setups — a group of space colonists scavenging an old space station and running afoul of one of those teeth-forward monsters — but we’ll see. (In space, no one can hear you complain about a movie that feels a bit too much like what’s come before it.) By the way, Scott, who was at the helm of 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” is counted among the film’s producers.

“Blink Twice” | Aug. 23 | Theaters: Zoe Kravitz makes her directorial debut in this black comedy thriller starring Naomi Ackie (“The End of the F***ing World”) and Channing Tatum as a waitress and the tech mogul who invites her to an island where, you guessed it, some crazy things go down. The cast also boasts Christian Slater, Haley Joel Osment and Alia Shawkat, and the whole thing looks like a lot of twisted fun.

Depersonalization is a branching RPG with multiple endings, which allows you to shape the world of the game around you. Players can create a variety of characters, each with their own personalities, offering exploration, investigation, and deductive reasoning as means to reach the end of the story you help create.

A 2D sandbox RPG, Keplerth lets you take on the threats of a dangerous alien planet wither alone or with friends. Offering an open world with near-infinite variation on every run, you’ll be able to fight, farm, craft, and even edit your own characters’ genes to survive.

Volcano Princess

Platform: Xbox Series XIS and PC

Developer: Egg Hatcher

In this fantasy parenting simulator, you’ll be tasked with raising a daughter – not only affecting her future, but the future of an entire kingdom. With multiple choices and endings, you’ll be able to help your daughter to learn, train, and befriend others, ultimately affecting how the story plays out as a result of your decisions.

Explore the galaxy. Discover new life. Eat it. Play as Hangry, a beastly mercenary with an insatiable hunger hunting down fearsome monsters in a snack n’ slash RPG. Jackbox Naughty Pack
