Journey 2: the mysterious island cast & character guide - where you've seen the actors before.

With A-list stars like The Rock and Vanessa Hudgens at the helm, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has a stacked cast of Hollywood heavyweights.

  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island brings a fresh perspective with a shift in narrative focus, combining mystery, fantasy, and action.
  • Dwayne Johnson's charismatic performance as Hank Parsons adds humor, physical prowess, and emotional depth to the film.
  • Vanessa Hudgens' portrayal of Kailani is full of confidence and charm.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the second installment in the Journey film franchise, which features an all-star cast including Vanessa Hudgens. While 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth was inspired by Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel of the same name, Journey 2 embraces a different Verne novel, The Mysterious Island , as its primary source material and focuses more on comedy. Unlike the first film's underground exploration theme, Journey 2 expands its horizon to an enigmatic island, introducing new characters and challenges. It makes for an exciting standalone adventure while maintaining a connection to the franchise's adventurous spirit.

This shift in narrative focus brings a fresh perspective to the franchise, offering a new adventure that combines elements of mystery, fantasy, and action. The sequel stands out for its unique blend of mythical creatures, hidden treasures, and uncharted territories, providing a visually stunning and thrilling experience. However, 2012's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island not only explores new thematic terrain but also features a star-studded cast that adds depth and charisma to its fantastical world. The film's ensemble comprises both seasoned actors and rising stars, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in an interesting transitional phase of his career.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s Franchises Ranked Worst To Best

Dwayne johnson as hank parsons.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays Hank Parsons in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Hank is Sean Anderson's stepfather, a former Navy codebreaker who reluctantly joins the adventure. Typical of other Johnson performances, his character brings a blend of humor, physical prowess, and emotional depth to the film. Hank's relationship with Sean evolves throughout the movie, adding a layer of family dynamics to the adventurous storyline. His expertise in navigation and survival skills proves crucial in the challenges they face on the island.

Dwayne Johnson's career transition from a professional wrestler to a Hollywood superstar is legendary. Known for his charismatic screen presence and action-packed performances, Johnson has starred in major blockbusters like the Fast & Furious franchise as Luke Hobbs , San Andreas as Raymond, and Jumanji as Spencer. His roles showcase his physical strength and comedic talent, making him one of the most entertaining stars in the industry. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island marks an interesting point in Johnson's career, as it was right on the cusp of him becoming a bankable actor able who brings in billions at the box office.

Josh Hutcherson As Sean Anderson

Josh Hutcherson is the bridge between the first movie and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , as he reprises his role as Sean Anderson, the intrepid young explorer from the 2008 film. Sean embarks on another extraordinary adventure, this time to find his missing grandfather on the mythical Mysterious Island. His character's bravery, intelligence, and curiosity drive the plot, as he navigates through the island's wonders and dangers. Sean's development from the first film is evident, showcasing a more mature and confident explorer, yet retaining the youthful enthusiasm that defines his character.

Josh Hutcherson became a household name with his role as Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games series , a part that catapulted him to international fame. His portrayal of the compassionate and resourceful Peeta garnered critical acclaim and a massive fan following. Before The Hunger Games , Hutcherson had already established himself as a talented young actor with roles in other adventure films, such as Jesse in Bridge to Terabithia and Walter in Zathura: A Space Adventure . In 2023, he starred in the PG-13 sleeper hit horror movie Five Nights at Freddy 's as Mike Schmidt.

Michael Caine As Alexander Anderson

Legendary actor Michael Caine plays Alexander Anderson, Sean's adventurous grandfather, in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Alexander, a Vernian (follower of Jules Verne's works), is the reason behind the expedition to the Mysterious Island. His character is eccentric, full of wisdom, and embodies the spirit of exploration. Caine's portrayal brings a sense of gravitas and charm to the film, serving as a mentor figure to the younger characters while engaging in the adventure with youthful vigor.

Michael Caine's illustrious career spans several decades, with iconic roles such as Charlie in the classic British crime caper The Italian Job , the titular character in the '60s drama Alfie , and Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. His remarkable versatility and distinctive Cockney accent have made him one of the most respected and beloved actors in cinema. Caine's ability to adapt to various genres, from drama to comedy, has earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards. His latest film, 2023's The Great Escaper, marks the last film of his career after Caine announced his retirement .

Luis Guzmán As Gabato

Luis Guzmán portrays Gabato, the comical and kind-hearted helicopter pilot who helps the group reach the Mysterious Island. Typical of Guzmán's usual roles, his character adds a humorous and relatable touch to the film, often providing comic relief amidst the thrilling action. However, Gabato's concern for his daughter, Kailani, and his willingness to embark on the dangerous journey for her sake, adds emotional depth to his role.

Luis Guzmán is known for his character roles, often playing likable, down-to-earth characters in both film and television. The actor has two notable great working relationships in Hollywood. As a close friend of Adam Sandler , Guzmán has featured alongside the comedian in Anger Management, Sandy Wexler, The Do-Over , and others. The actor is also close to celebrated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson , with appearances in Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love (also starring Sandler). In television, Guzmán gained acclaim for his portrayal of patriarch Gomez Addams on Wednesday .

Vanessa Hudgens As Kailani

Vanessa Hudgens plays Kailani, Gabato's determined and courageous daughter, who joins the quest to find the Mysterious Island. Her character is strong-willed, resourceful, and serves as a romantic interest for Sean. Kailani's adventurous spirit and bravery make her a key member of the expedition team, and Hudgens' performance brings a sense of determination and charm to the role. Hudgens rose to fame with her role as Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical series , a role that made her a teen idol. Since then, she has diversified her career with roles in films like Spring Breakers and Tick, Tick... Boom!

Kristin Davis As Liz Anderson-Parsons

Kristin Davis portrays Liz Anderson-Parsons, Sean's caring and concerned mother, who reluctantly allows him to search for his grandfather in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Her character, while not central to the island's adventure, plays a crucial role in the emotional backdrop of the story, representing the family ties and concerns back home.

Davis is best known for her role as Charlotte York in Sex and the City , which earned her widespread recognition. She notably returned to the role of Charlotte in the Max revival series And Just Like That.. for two seasons with And Just Like That... season 3 in development.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, and YouTube.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Critic Reviews for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Audience reviews for journey 2: the mysterious island.

What's interesting about this standard adventure tale is how it tells it's story: the barest bones of construction, and only the points you are already well versed with (from all the other adventure tales they've "borrowed" from) to get to the point quickly. Quite literally they find a "secret map written in code" and decipher the thing in less than 5 minutes, and then "it's off to the island!". Everything happens fast, and everyone's only playing a cliche, and so after a minute it becomes cool simply watching the race to the end. Should I tell you "no surprises here"? If I did, that would be the only surprise of this feature.

journey film dwayne johnson

Better than the first mostly due to the fact that the cast were more likeable and the story wasn't as cheesy, It's still cheesy but it's fun, The effects were ok but some looked pretty bad in places, I can't comment on the 3D as I watched the 2D version but just like the first it looked like it would be good in 3D, The story was predictable but fun and most of all my kids enjoyed it and that's the films target audience so it's hard to be too critical.

I just finished watching on my cable this science fiction adventure comedy directed by Brad Peyton. This is a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, and is based on another Jules Verne novel, this time The Mysterious Island. Very unusual cast stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, and Kristin Davis. The story was written by Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn. This movie became a box office success with a worldwide gross of nearly $326 million, surpassing its predecessor, I think mainly because of the 3D technology. The story is happening four years since the events of the first movie, and starts with the 18-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) involved in a chase with the police which ended with him driving into a swimming pool. His step-father Hank (Dwayne Johnson) arrives and later discovers that Sean had broken into a satellite research centre in order to boost the signal of a code he'd received by someone he suspects is Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather who had been missing for two years. Wanting to bond with his stepson the next day, Hank helps Sean decipher the code of Jules Verne and makes a map from the three books in the coded letter with the coordinates to its location. All they need to do now is to convince Sean's mother to let the both of them go in search of the island. This is a film with very likable characters and actors in an adventure which could excite the younger audience, but not too exciting for the older. It is moving quickly but parts of the story almost seemed unrelated at some moments. Directing seemed done without any motivation... that doesn't mean it was bad, but wasn't very noticeable. If you want to spend a night with a family watching something which is semi-sweet and very colourful, give it a go!

Journey to ridiculous. But nice visuals/SFX. The Rock delivers the same crappola performance he's famous for...sadly.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island: Film Review

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Still - H 2012

A menagerie of outsized fauna is royally upstaged by Dwayne Johnson ’s dancing man-boobs in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , yet another from the Verne-adaptation school of fanciful family adventure.

A 3D update of one of the less widely read Jules Verne classics, it follows the 2008 hit J ourney to the Center of the Earth , a pioneer in the 3D resurrection that reached its zenith a year later with Avatar.

The Bottom Line Jules Verne rejuvenated for the iPhone age.

PHOTOS: Dwayne Johnson and 26 of Hollywood’s Most Popular Athletes-Turned-Actors

Verne was a fantasist nonpareil, but his 19th century imagination would surely have balked at the notion of berries pinging wildly off The Rock’s pecs as they do in this kid-friendly excursion from Canadian director Brad Peyton ( Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ).

The targeted demographic, however, will gladly hop aboard for a cornball ride through colorful, often glaringly phony sets popping with miniature elephants, gold-spewing volcanoes and a monster-truck-sized lizard.

For the adults, there’s the edifying sight of Michael Caine astride a giant bee.

The New Line and Contrafilm presentation, bowing in Australia January 19 before a global roll-out that reaches North America on February 10, can expect to at least equal the $250 million box office drawn by 2008’s Journey.

Josh Hutcherson , whose teen idol status is set to hit critical mass with his upcoming role in The Hunger Games , returns as intrepid young explorer Sean Anderson. In Journey, he was accompanied by his uncle (played by Brendan Fraser ), but this time round a cheerily self-aware Johnson, as his Navy vet stepfather Hank, is the responsible adult on board.

VIDEO:Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens and Dwayne Johnson Discover a ‘Mysterious Island’ in ‘Journey 2’ Trailer

Sean is now a rebellious 17-year-old and skeptical of the new father-figure chosen by his mom ( Kristen Davis ). The requisite male bonding ensues when Sean intercepts a coded distress signal which leads the pair to an uncharted island in the middle of the South Pacific and into the eccentric vortex of Sean’s adventurer grandfather, Alexander (Caine).

Equal and opposite attraction emerges in the form of the headstrong Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), daughter of helicopter pilot Gabato ( Luis Guzmán , providing stale comic relief).

The island is a rainbow-filled world where evolutionary anomalies abound but, as the band of adventurers skips from one supersized Survivor -like challenge to the next, one can’t help feeling the creative potential of Verne’s vision is wasted.

There’s certainly nothing much here to frighten the children, although Johnson’s ukulele-accompanied rendition of “What a Wonderful World” might come close. The dense scientific discussion that characterized Verne’s “The Mysterious Island” is boiled down to an occasional spurt of exposition – and an iPhone cameo – as screenwriters Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn braid together elements from that novel, together with Robert Louis Stevenson ’s Robinson Crusoe and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, to produce an episodic storyline.

Like Jane Austen , Verne has provided a rich seam for Hollywood screenwriters to mine long after his death. There have been various cinematic adaptations of his 1874 novel; the most fondly remembered is 1961’s Mysterious Island, celebrated for Ray Harryhausen ’s stop-motion animation and the buckskin micro-dress worn by Beth Rogan . That film followed the 1959 version of J ourney to the Center of the Earth in the same way Journey 2 follows 2008’s Journey , but was considered a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in that the megalomaniac Captain Nemo also featured.

Nemo is referenced obliquely here, but a glorious steam-punk rendering of the Nautilus is featured prominently, eventually getting a jump-start from a gigantic electric eel in one of the film’s most inventive set pieces.

Where the 1961 film took its make-believe seriously, Peyton is content creating a series of visual spectacles. Johnson sets the tone with an affable goofiness, although never ignites the spark that his labored banter with Caine requires.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island —The Rock’s Latest Family Role

journey film dwayne johnson

(L. to R.) Josh Hutcherson, Luis Guzmán, Vanessa Hudgens and Dwayne Johnson

A majestic mountain of muscles, Dwayne Johnson is fully capable of using his pectorals to catapult small objects hither and yon, a skill he demonstrates with berries in the blithely idiotic family movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . But the muscles that matter most to Johnson, the actor, as opposed to the former pro wrestler, are the zygomaticus major, which control the smile. They are as buff and ready for action as his chest and arms, an emblem of easy charm.

He uses the quick smile on his future stepson, Sean (Josh Hutcherson, returning to this Jules Verne-goes-21st-century franchise, which began with 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth ) but to no avail. The boy dislikes Hank even though he seems to make mom (Kirstin Davis) happy and is kind and decent. The movie’s largest emotional concern is creating a bond between the recalcitrant, Verne-obsessed teen and the man obsessed with being a good father figure to Sean. Hank’s motivation comes from his own bad dad experience; his father “left when I was eight and I haven’t seen him since.”

(Vote in TIME’s Oscar Competition: Our Hunt for the BEST Best Picture )

Don’t worry; their emotional journey is a piece of cake, as is every easily earned triumph in this lightweight adventure tale. The story opens with Sean puzzling over a coded radio signal he believes is a message from his missing grandfather. (The family has a tendency to wander; Dad was missing in the first Journey, which starred another muscle man, Brendan Fraser.) Hank, who has a Navy background, cracks the code far faster than most parents decipher the grading system on an elementary school report card. The radio communiqué contains an announcement to quicken the heart of any Vernian; the writer’s allegedly fictional island from his 1874 novel The Mysterious Island is in fact real and located in the South Pacific. Come visit!

If ill-mannered Sean were my future stepson I doubt very much I’d want to take him halfway across the world, and particularly not to an uncharted isle where we could potentially get stuck together for all time, but that’s just what Hank does. Mom stays behind (Davis has maybe four minutes of screen time, all of it smiling benevolently), but two other travelers join them, a hapless helicopter pilot (Luiz Guzman) and his daughter (Vanessa Hudgens). Another quibble – if I’d traveled all that way to see a hidden tropical treasure, where butterflies are the size of condors and elephants the size of cocker spaniels, I’d plan to linger and smell the hibiscus or at least let red-faced, immature Grandpa (Michael Caine) cook me a nice plate of scrambled lizard eggs. But not Hank; he’d like to keep the visit as short as a pit stop on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Danger in the form of giant lizards and bad jokes await them, as well as a clumsy mishmash of classic literature references – not just Verne – meant to make the audience feel erudite while explaining the complexities of the island. It’s Jonathan Swift’s Lilliput or Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island or Atlantis, or maybe all three at once. (I was disappointed that Sean, Hank and their companions — who provide comic and comely relief — didn’t spend a few nights at CliffsNotes Cottage.) All this is just an excuse for action sequences broadly influenced by the Indiana Jones and Pirates of the Caribbean movies but nowhere near as technologically lively, even in 3-D. The crumbling caverns and skeletons all look as fake as the drooling volcano towering over the center of the island.

But as cartoonish as those giant lizards, spiders and hungry, angry birds appear, parents are advised to take that PG rating seriously. A child near me at an advance screening hid his face in his chair during every chase sequence and bellowed “this is not a movie to take kids to!” (Okay, he was sitting right next to me. And on our car ride home, he voiced the opinion that PG should be for kids 9 and up.) Certainly it’s not for very small kids. It’s silly enough that young teens are unlikely to be drawn to it unless they’ve got a thing for Hudgens or want to take an early peek at Hutcherson, who will soon be seen as Peeta in The Hunger Games. He was great as a sulky brat in The Kids Are All Right but in Journey 2 he comes across as wooden, dull and though not yet 20, too old for roles like these. So an awful lot is riding on Johnson’s zygomaticus major. They’re powerful, but they can’t work miracles.

Like cars that are involved in crashes, islands explode far more often in the movies than they do in real life. Another one goes kablooey in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” a sequel to the 2008 film “Journey to the Center of the Earth” that again gives a Jules Verne tale 3-D treatment.

Sean (Josh Hutcherson), the only major returnee from the earlier movie , receives a radio transmission that leads him to believe that his grandfather is on a fantastical island in the middle of nowhere, and he and his stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) go looking for it.

The usual escape-before-the-big-blast stuff ensues, augmented by some fairly tedious family dynamics. But this kind of movie is all about the special effects. They start out great — cool helicopter crash, very convincing giant lizard — but grow more amateurish as the film goes along, with a flight sequence on giant bees proving particularly clunky.

Michael Caine plays the grandfather, and the efforts at repartee between his character and Mr. Johnson’s occasionally amuse. Vanessa Hudgens from the “High School Musical” movies is on hand too, though it’s Mr. Johnson who gets to sing. Besides that musical moment, the movie makes no effort to do anything other than what is expected, and it succeeds at that.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is rated PG (Parental guidance suggested). Angry animals and an angrier landscape.

Opens on Friday nationwide. Directed by Brad Peyton 1 hour 34 minutes.

Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

Arka Mukhopadhyay of Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?

Brad Peyton helmed the blockbuster adventure movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,’ the second installment in the Jules Verne-inspired ‘Journey’ series. Upon discovering a signal from Sean’s grandfather Alexander Anderson, Sean and his stepdad, Hank, set out for a sprawling adventure filled with lush greenery and uncanny creatures. They arrive in the far-flung island country of Palau, regroup with Alexander thanks to a cyclone, and embark on a search for the lost city of Atlantis.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivers a hilarious performance alongside Michael Caine , Luis Guzmán, Vanessa Hudgens , and Josh Hutcherson. Most of the story unveils in the turbulent pacific, while the finale takes place on a dreamy island. However, you may seek to identify the locations where the movie was filmed. If that is the case, let us divulge before you everything we know.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filming Locations

‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ was filmed in locations in and around the U.S., especially in Hawaii. Filming commenced on October 25, 2010, and was wrapped up by December 15 of the same year. Let us now take you to the specific locations where the movie was filmed!

O’ahu, Hawaii

Most parts of the movie were filmed in Hawaii, possibly including the Atlantis scenes. The director took his team to Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre vast nature reserve, event venue, cattle ranch, and most importantly, a famous filming destination in Hawaii. Situated at 49560 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Ka’a’awa, at around 24 miles from Honolulu, the ranch is a popular tourist destination in the city.

journey film dwayne johnson

The reserve has been home to more than 79 movie productions, including blockbusters such as ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘ 50 First Dates ,’ and ‘Pearl Harbor.’ Look for the scene where they are heading towards the submarine, at around 46 minutes mark. You can locate the open space where filming of ‘ Jurassic Park ‘ took place.

Several scenes were also filmed at the Waimea Bay and its adjacent Waimea Bay Beach Park, located at 61-31 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Haleiwa along the north shore of O’ahu. Due to its situation at the mouth of the Waimea River and the proximity of several tourist places, Waimea Bay sees footfall all around the year. In the summer, you can go out surfing, while in the winter, you can enjoy the view of the towering waves with a bonfire.

Wilmington, North Carolina

The production team carried out several scenes in a controlled studio environment. The movie presumably contains several CGI-aided sequences, and the scenes were possibly developed in a full-service production facility in the community of Wilmington off the coast of North Carolina. EUE / Screen Gems Studios, a movie production facility located at 1223 North 23rd Street, lent its premises to film scenes.

journey film dwayne johnson

The 50-acre expansive studio facility features ten fully equipped soundstages and a back-lot to tackle any global-scale production. Since its inception in 1985, more than 400 titles have come out of the studio. Movies filmed in the studio include blockbusters such as ‘ The Conjuring ‘ and ‘Iron Man 3.’ ‘Iron Man 3’ was one of the most significant projects the studio had ever seen, with filming taking place in all the ten soundstages simultaneously.

New York City, New York

journey film dwayne johnson

Lastly, a few scenes at the movie’s beginning were filmed on location in New York City. New York City remains one of the most iconic places to shoot a film due to the city’s cultural significance. From Martin Scorsese’s ‘ Taxi Driver ‘ to Woody Allen ‘s ‘ Manhattan ,’ the towering landscape of New York City has been featured in timeless classics.

Why The Rock's Giving Up On Making Journey 3

The Rock Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Between his turns in franchises like G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious (just to name a couple), Dwayne Johnson has earned his Franchise Viagra nickname. That said, not all of his potential projects will ever see the light of day, including a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Some fans have wondered why we haven't seen the third installment in the franchise yet, and Johnson has officially taken to social media to explain that he gave up on it because he couldn't creatively make it work. In response to the question of Journey 3 's status, The Rock posted:

So it seems that there was a plan to make a third Journey at one point in time. The Rock wanted to dive further into Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon to push the franchise into trilogy territory. However, as is often the case with franchises such as this, the project ran into creative issues and ended up getting abandoned somewhere in development hell. Now, Dwayne Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his upcoming Luke Hobbs/Deckard Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff , with no intention of journeying back to Journey .

Of course, if you're a fan who wants to see The Rock adventure through a jungle on a blockbuster adventure, then you can always head to your local theater to check out Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . The revival of the board game (now video game) adventure series has made a ton of money and has earned a welcoming response from critics . It's not a Journey movie, but based on his post , it seems that it will have to do for the foreseeable future.

The Rock Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle Karen Gillan Jack Black

That's not to say that the Journey franchise couldn't conceivably continue without The Rock involved in some capacity. After all, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , despite its status as a sequel, was Dwayne Johnson first installment in the franchise -- which saw him take the reins from Brendan Fraser after 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth . Dropping a box office draw as powerful of The Rock doesn't necessarily seem like the smartest business decision, but if he's not coming back, that could be the only way to get another Journey movie made.

Though it might feel somewhat disheartening for fans to learn that a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn't in the cards at this point, we will bring you more information related to all of Dwayne Johnson's upcoming projects as new details are made available to us. If you want release dates for his 2018 films like Rampage and Skyscraper , then make sure to hop over to our 2018 movie premiere guide or check out our full guide to what the wildly successful actor has coming up.

Journey 3: Why From the Earth to the Moon Didn't Happen

Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon was highly anticipated by fans of the series. Here's why the sequel ultimately didn't happen.

The Journey franchise began with Journey to the Centre of the Earth , and continued with its sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Both films were hugely successful, and with the introduction of Dwayne Johnson in the second film, they fast became box office successes, picked up legions of fans, and looked on track to follow the classic film franchise formula for continued success.

Shortly after the success of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , a following sequel was announced which promised to be even bigger and better: Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon . Unfortunately, this project was paused shortly after, and then the announcement came that the film was no more . Here’s everything we know about the sequel and why it didn't happen.

Script Difficulties and Actor Commitment Issues

One of the first problems that was encountered by the Journey franchise was the curse of a lack of script for developing the project further. Johnson revealed in 2018 that the lack of a solid script was a large reason for his not being involved in the project. There was initial speculation that writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes would be tied to the film. This could have been exciting, given their previous work in films such as The Conjuring and House of Wax , representing the possibility for the script to change to be more mature or have horror themes which were not fully explored before. This creative direction was eventually scrapped for reasons unclear. Naturally, difficulties such as these meant that actors were hesitant to be tied to the project since it didn’t seem to be fully coming into fruition. It would have been interesting, however, to see what direction the Hayes Brothers could have taken the film in.

Dwayne Johnson’s Popularity Surged

Dwayne Johnson first gained huge popularity under his stage name The Rock. He initially appeared as a wrestler for WWE, where he wrestled for eight years and became one of the most famous wrestlers to ever be on the show, developing a huge following and growing in popularity year after year. This led to a continued career in film, beginning in 2002 when he starred in The Scorpion King , which then led to further success, allowing him to leave WWE altogether and act in Hollywood full time.

When Johnson joined the franchise in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , his career was only just beginning to gain the momentum that it has today. The years following Journey 2 saw Johnson take on several huge projects, like Fast & Furious 6 , Hercules , San Andreas , and Moana , to name a few. It’s clear that his schedule was becoming more and more packed, and without a script for Journey 3 , the possibility of a sequel was put to the back of his to-do list. Despite director Peyton frequently stating in interviews that he did not have any plans for the franchise to end, the lack of Johnson’s presence would have likely thrown a wrench in the plans. Johnson eventually confirmed on Twitter that he would not be returning, which present the ultimate challenge for the film since he was an integral part to its success and general appeal. While responding to his fans, the actor stated that the reason behind the cancelation was the script and his busy work schedule.

There’s an Online Petition for the Project to be Resurrected

Understandably, fans were not happy with the decision for the film to be shelved, and Johnson’s announcement that he would not be returning in 2018 caused even further disappointment. The original director for the film was supposed to be Brad Peyton, and after having huge successes like San Andreas and Rampage , we can understand why fans were sad about missing out on this opportunity. In today’s world, fans have access to the internet and can be very vocal about their upset for these kinds of things. This has resulted in the setting up of a petition, which call for Dwayne Johnson and Brad Peyton to be attached to the film again, which you can find here .

Educational Value

The movie is intended to entertain rather than educate.

Positive Messages

Families work hard to stick together and stand by each other, even if that requires making sacrifices. Teens learn to understand and respect their parents and guardians. Together, and by using teamwork, the group is able to overcome many giant-sized challenges.

Positive Role Models

The movie's two father figures are both positive role models. Neither is perfect -- they have moments of bull-headedness, cowardice, and other flaws -- but they're completely devoted to their kids and will never give up, even if that means making sacrifices or facing fears. A young woman shows that she can take care of herself.

Violence & Scariness

Giant monsters roar and chase the main characters; many of those chases end up with the creatures getting smushed and crunched. There's a somewhat scary helicopter crash scene and some "gross out" scenes as well.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) is shown in slow-motion letting down her hair and removing a button-up shirt to reveal a tight-fitting tank top. Her cleavage is sometimes visible. She and Sean often argue in a flirty way, and there's a kiss at the end.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide.

Sporadic use of potty talk and mild language -- mostly during loud chase scenes -- as well as insults; words include "hell," "oh my God," "ass," "piss,'' "poop," and ''crap."

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Language in your kid's entertainment guide.

Products & Purchases

Sean opens and drinks from a Coca-Cola in an early scene. The label isn't clearly on view, but the bottle's shape and color are unmistakable.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Not an issue except for a quick, humorous line of dialogue: "What were you drinking?"

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Drinking, Drugs & Smoking in your kid's entertainment guide.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the sequel to 2008's entertaining Journey to the Center of the Earth . The Hunger Games ' Josh Hutcherson is the sole returning cast member, but the tone is very similar to the original. Overall, it's a family-friendly adventure -- albeit one with frequent tense chases, monster attacks, and a somewhat scary helicopter crash (some of which is a bit more intense in the movie's 3-D version). There's also flirting and a kiss between the two main teen characters, and co-star Vanessa Hudgens is often shown wearing a tight, cleavage-enhancing tank top. Expect some gross-out humor, as well as potty talk and very sporadic mild language ("ass," "hell," etc.). This is no cinematic classic, but it is bright and cheerful and has positive characters, including fatherly role models. Are the producers obsessed with young girls bodies? Smh

Just like a poop in a punch bowl, what's the story.

After surviving his Journey to the Center of the Earth , Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) is back living with his mom ( Kristin Davis ) and step-dad, Hank ( Dwayne Johnson ). Sean gets a coded message from his grandfather about the location of Jules Verne's famed "Mysterious Island." Hoping for some much-needed bonding time, Hank volunteers to go with him. In Palau, they hire a ramshackle helicopter, piloted by Gabato (Luis Guzman). Happily for Sean, Gabato's pretty daughter, Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), comes with the deal. After crashing on the island, the explorers discover a world of tiny elephants, huge bees, and lost cities. But they also realize that they must find Sean's grandfather -- and discover a way off the island before time runs out.

Is It Any Good?

From the director of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore , JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is as clumsy and clunky as its title. The pace is speedy, but it seems as though the movie sacrificed logic, character, mood, and rhythm to achieve that speed. Moreover, the visual effects appear soft and never quite mesh with the real stuff. Even the 3D effects don't really add anything except for the occasional "comin' at ya" moment.

On the plus side, the movie has an inviting, warm, open-air feel, and it's more innocuous than it is obnoxious. Strong, positive characters -- including a young woman who can take care of herself -- and family bonding moments are also very appealing. Not to mention that this is the only movie in which you can see former pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. "The Rock") playing the ukulele and singing "What a Wonderful World."

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Journey 2 's violence and scary stuff. How does its fantasy nature affect its impact? How do the movie's intense experiences affect Sean and his step-dad's relationship?

How does the movie portray families? How does that message/depiction compare to what you've seen in other movies and TV shows?

How does the movie portray fathers? There's a theme of "missing dads," but there are also great dad characters here. What's the take-away?

The first Journey movie was an adaptation of a Jules Verne novel; this movie's title also cites a Verne book but isn't a direct adaptation. What other books does it remind you of? Are there any you'd like to read after watching the movie?

Creative Team for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Attached to Possible JOURNEY 3

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Team Returns for Journey 3. The creative team behind Journey 2 is being kept for a possible Journey 3.

Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten , and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10 th ) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) as he searches for his missing grandfather ( Michael Caine ) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. Hit the jump for more.

The Wrap reported that though the studio would prefer to reunite cast and crew for a third Journey , it is unclear whether the actors will return or not. Brendan Fraser did not reprise his role from the first movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth , but Hutcherson is back in the lineup. Newcomers to the sequel include Dwayne Johnson as Sean’s new stepfather, who accompanies him to the island. In order to get there, they seek the services of a father/daughter team with access to a helicopter and expert navigational skills, played by Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens.

You can get caught up with all of our previous coverage here . Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hits theaters on February 10 th .

Check out the synopsis below:

In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the new 3D family adventure “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” begins when young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It’s a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Would you Journey 2: The Mysterious Island?

You probably weren't expecting a sequel to 2008's Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D . And this is probably because you forgot that 2008's Journey to the Centre of the Earth even existed. That's not your fault – it was one of those gimmicky films from the early days of digital 3D that basically acted as a placeholder for Avatar .

But now there's a sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth, of sorts. It bears the clunky title of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and there's been a radical overhaul since the first outing. Brendan Fraser has been replaced with Dwayne Johnson, there's a mysterious island instead of the centre of the Earth and it's a gimmicky film from the dying days of digital 3D that basically acts as a placeholder for Avatar 2 . But is Journey 2: The Mysterious Island any good? Let's comb through its trailer to find out ...

Still from The Journey 2 1

1) Josh Hutherson from Journey to the Centre of the Earth is looking for an island, and a mysterious one at that. However, he knows that he can't find this mysterious island alone, which is why he's asked his best friend to help him. His best friend is Dwanye Johnson, who is a full-grown man. There's nothing funny about a full-grown man hanging around with a boy who he's not related to, though. There isn't. Stop judging them.

Still from The Journey 2 2

2) However, Josh and Dwayne need to fly to the island, so they enlist the help of some locals. Luis Guzmán doesn't look keen, because he knows that he always ends up playing the lazily stereotyped hispanic comedy figure in these films. But Vanessa Hudgens is more than willing. This is probably because Sucker Punch didn't do as well as she wanted and she's got bills to pay. But, hey, what's the name of this mysterious island that Josh is so desperate to visit?

Still from The Journey 2 3

3) Oh, it's Mysterious Island. Not very imaginative, is it? Anyway, why is Josh so keen to visit this mysterious island?

Still from The Journey 2 4

4) It's because Michael Caine is there. And Michael Caine is his grandad, or his uncle, or just another full-grown man who he isn't related to but likes to hang around with. Stop judging him.

Still from The Journey 2 5

5) However, the flight to the island is interrupted when their helicopter breaks up in mysterious circumstances. I don't know about you, but Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is starting to remind me of Lost a little bit. Hopefully its producers aren't cheap enough to just rip Lost off entirely, though.

Still from The Journey 2 6

6) Oh fine, ignore what I just said, then.

Still from The Journey 2 7

7) This certainly looks like the Lost island. The landscape is dotted with the same mixture of lush forests, waterfalls and mountains. But you'll remember that Lost's island was home to mysterious light patterns, unexplained wells of electromagnetic energy, non-linear time and two duelling God figures. So how can Journey 2: The Mysterious Island top all that?

Still from The Journey 2 8

8) Easy. Quite small elephants. Boom! Take that, Lost. And this is just the starter. You'll never guess what other mysteries are sprinkled across the Mysterious Island.

Still from The Journey 2 9

9) That's right – quite big wasps. Quite small elephants and quite big wasps. Mysterious! In a way, I wish this film was called Journey 2: The Island of Some Unconventionally Proportioned Animals. It would probably make lots more money if that was the case. But wait – the big selling point of Journey to the Centre of the Earth was its pioneering use of 3D. Maybe a glut of amazing stereoscopic wonders will draw audiences to the sequel. What dazzling effects can we expect this time around?

Still from The Journey 2 10

10) A boy pinging a berry off Dwayne Johnson's dancing manboobs. Amazing. I'll book my ticket now.

John Cena is giving some behind-the-scenes intel into the rumored feud between his Fast & the Furious co-stars, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Vin Diesel .

Cena played Jakob in 2021's F9: The Fast Saga as well as in 2023's Fast X . His turn in the long-standing franchise came at a time when Johnson and Diesel were rumored to be at-odds. Cena addressed this tension on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast.

"At least it was rumored that was a rough pairing," Shepard said of Johnson and Diesel relationship.

"There's certainly rumors about that. I can't deny that," Cena admitted, laughing. "You have two very alpha-driven people. You get two, there can only be one."

Diesel has been with the Fast franchise from the beginning, playing the family-focused Dominic Toretto. Johnson joined the franchise in 2011's Fast Five as Luke Hobbs. He went on to appear in 2013's Fast & Furious 6 , 2015's Furious 7 , 2017's The Fate of the Furious , 2019's Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw , and 2023's Fast X .

The alleged tension began in 2016 when Johnson called a few of his male Fast & Furious co-stars "candy a**es" and "unprofessional" on Instagram, which fans quickly assumed was a reference to Diesel. A source told ET at the time that Diesel and Johnson definitely  clashed on set during filming.

Johnson later vowed in 2021 that there was  "no chance"  of him returning to star in a  Fast & Furious  movie -- with plans instead to spin off his and  Jason Statham's  character in  Hobbs & Shaw  films.

However, the  Fast X  post-credits scene features  Jason Momoa's  villain calling Hobbs to tell him he's coming for him next -- all but confirming Johnson's return for the 11th  Fast  film. The actor will also star in an upcoming  Hobbs-focused  Fast & Furious  movie  that will bridge the gap between  Fast X  and the upcoming  Fast X: Part II.

"It was no easy task, because so much has been created in this universe," Diesel said of Johnson's return in a previous featurette. "To tie up all these storylines, this character needed to come back into the mythology."

The franchise star  previously told ET  that he was proud of each member of the "great cast" that makes up the extended  Fast  family.

"We lead with love," he shared. "We try to create an environment where people can do their best work."

As for Cena's take on entering the franchise, he said on Armchair Expert that he went into the films with a respect for the films' legacy.

"I'm being invited into someone's home, into someone's family and regardless of how they look physically in comparison to another human being, this is one IP that's had nine installments and it's an action movie. That's rarified air," Cena explained. "At the very least, there has to be respect for that. And I think when you look at it from that perspective, and I also know I'm a guest. I'm not trying to get into the sandbox. That's not my thing. I'm grateful for what you've given me. I just want to be the best firetruck I can."

Cena and Johnson have their own history of tension embedded in their WWE backgrounds. After Johnson left the WWE to pursue an acting career, Cena called him out before later making the same decision with his own path. The two have since made up, with Cena admitting to being in the wrong.

In January, Cena told ET that his stint in the WWE would be done sooner rather than later.

"That's not a maybe. That time is gonna come and it's gonna come soon," he told ET. "I never wanted to just go out there for the sake of going out there."

The 46-year-old star noted he will be done before turning 50.

Moana 2 New Image Revealed With Confirmation of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho Returning

Why does that island look like it has eyes, tentacles, and a giant mouth.

Adam Bankhurst Avatar

Alongside officially confirming that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho will be returning for Moana 2, Disney has shared a new image of the much-anticipated sequel that is set to sail into theaters on November 27, 2024.

This first image was revealed on X/Twitter during Disney's 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders and features an older Moana sailing with a confident look on her face. She is also holding an oar with Maui's fish hook and a heart engraved on it.

Perhaps most concerning, however, is the island behind her that very well may actually be a giant monster/shell creature with eyes, tentacles, and a giant mouth.

Watch out behind you, Moana. Image Credit: Disney

Moana 2 was announced back in February with a short teaser and Moana's newest adventure kicks off when she gets an "unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors."

"Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers," the official description reads. "After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina, Moana 2 opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024."

The original Moana was released in 2016 and, in our review, we said, "Storywise, Moana perhaps isn’t breaking new ground and it’s not making as much of a notable statement as Disney’s last animated film, Zootopia, but that doesn't stop it from being an easy recommendation. The film delivers the strong humor, well executed action, memorable music and lovable characters Disney has perfected in a delightful and lovely manner."

For more, check out other upcoming Disney and Pixar movies and the latest details on the live-action Moana film that will star Johnson but not Cravalho.

Oprah Winfrey Shares Her Remarkable Journey and What She’s Learned: 'I'm Grateful for It All'

At 70, the beloved icon and cultural trailblazer is driven by gratitude and a lifelong purpose to uplift others

Elizabeth Leonard is Managing Executive Editor and West Coast Bureau Chief for PEOPLE, where she's worked in leadership positions across the brand's entertainment and human interest verticals for 25 years.

When Oprah Winfrey appeared on the cover of PEOPLE for the first time, in January 1987, the milestone was not lost on her. "It was nothing I had ever imagined could happen to me," recalls Winfrey, whose hit talk show had just surpassed Phil Donahue’s atop the national TV ratings. "I was bedazzled." By any measure, the now 70-year-old icon has been bedazzling the world herself ever since. A cultural trailblazer, movie star, media mogul and global philanthropist, Winfrey is flush with gratitude for her remarkable journey. Most of all, she embraces a lifelong purpose to inspire and uplift others. In an interview for PEOPLE's 50th anniversary special issue, Winfrey says: "Gratitude really is my religion."

What did you buy with your first big paycheck?   I was going to furnish my first apartment in Chicago, and I walked into Crate & Barrel. There was a flatware set for $49.95. I did not get it because I still didn’t think I was making enough money to afford a six-piece set. Many years later, I was in a store and somebody was debating whether to get the flatware, and I went to the counter and paid for it because I remember that feeling of not being able to afford it. I love doing that.

You’ve always given back. I very much remember where I come from.

What would you tell your younger self starting out? "Hold on, girl. Hold on to yourself." The most important thing is to remain centered so whether you're on the cover of PEOPLE or not, your identity isn't tied to what the rest of the world says it is. Being able to not get confused by what the external says about your internal self is the most important thing for anybody who's going to take the fame ride.

One of the reasons I have remained so centered over the years is because when it happened to me, I'd already been working for a very long time. I'd been in TV since I was 19, and so by 1987 I was already, what, 33? And I had grown up centered in the church and had a really firm foundation of who I was. So I was excited to share myself, my talent, that show with the audience, but I wasn't really trying to figure out who I was.

At 70, does your outlook change? No. When you’re grateful for what you have, you end up seeing you have more than you imagine. Start with your breath, and recognize what an absolute miracle it is that your heart’s still pumping. That is a revelation to me every day. I’m grateful for it all.

Art Streiber

Who in the industry has been most supportive over the course of your journey? In those early years, it was Maya Angelou who kept me grounded, the person who kept me absolutely centered. [And] I've never been to a therapist because I had so many on the show, but my real therapy came from downloading whatever was happening in the day with Gayle [King] every night. There wasn't a day that we missed being on some kind of phone call talking about what had happened in our days. I realized years later, talking to an expert about something else, that that was my therapy, that was my release. It was the way I regulated myself every day. I've had one of the best friendships anybody could have. So having Maya, having Gayle, having Sidney Poitier before he passed... Those were the people who kept me grounded.

You've enjoyed many career milestones, but does the 2007 opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa hold a special place for you? Yes. It's incredible that these young girls whom I saw something in, that they themselves did not see or feel or know at the time, are now making their way out in the world. It is just one of the greatest rewards of my life.

You have an amazing ability to distill complicated thoughts and feelings so that people can digest them and learn. Where does that gift come from? Well, when I was a little kid living on a dirt road in Mississippi, I was the one that was always playing the teacher. And if we were playing house, I was the mother. Even if I was the younger girl, I would have to be the mother over everybody else. Some people call that bossy — I just call it, well, I know better, so I should be the one. I would have to say that teaching is my first love.

And the thing that still brings me the greatest level of satisfaction is having a conversation, and in the middle of the conversation, someone discovers something or hears something and says, "Oh, I never thought of it that way before." I have to tell you, on the Oprah Show , when people actually said that out loud, I would just [cry] because that's the best thing that could happen. That is what enlightenment is.

What are your hopes and fears for your 70s? For everybody who's approaching this stage in your life, your number one concern is your health. I don't live with a fear of death, but I live with a conscious acknowledgement that it's possible at any time... I would say that one of the reasons why I can sit in wisdom now, and I literally sit in the wisdom and I make no apologies for it, is because I have paid attention and I am really fully conscious. I've been paying attention for a very long time.

When I turned 50, Maya Angelou wrote a poem for me. She says, "I have nothing to give you, but my heart and my words" and she wrote a poem called Continue. One of the most important lines from that poem is, "My wish for you is that you continue to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness." And that is what I intend to do. She also says, "I hope that you let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel" and that is the way I rule my life. I sound like a broken record, but gratitude really is my religion.

Everything Vin Diesel and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Have Said About Their Feud

Everything Vin Diesel and Dwayne The Rock Johnson Have Said About Their Feud

You don’t turn your back on family — unless you’re Vin Diesel or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson , who have been nursing grudges against each other off and on since at least 2016.

The two action stars made their first onscreen appearance together in 2011’s Fast Five , in which the former wrestler joined the already long-running franchise as Luke Hobbs, an agent pursuing the Fast and Furious crew for their various crimes against … every law enforcement agency in the world.

Everything seemed copacetic over the years as Johnson returned for the sixth and seventh entries in the saga , but in August 2016, Johnson set the fandom ablaze with a since-deleted Instagram post in which he referred to unnamed members of the cast as “candy asses.”

Rumors immediately swirled that he was insulting Diesel, who had been part of the Fast franchise since the first movie premiered in 2001. A few days later, after filming for The Fate of the Furious wrapped, Johnson posted another Instagram thanking some of his castmates by name — Scott Eastwood and Nathalie Emmanuel , for example — but pointedly did not mention Diesel.

Everything Vin Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Have Said About Their Feud

You don't turn your back on family — unless you're Vin Diesel or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson , who have been nursing grudges against each other off and on since at least 2016. The two action stars made their first onscreen appearance together in 2011's Fast Five , in which the former wrestler joined the already long-running franchise as Luke Hobbs, an agent pursuing the Fast and Furious crew for their various crimes against ... every law enforcement agency in the world. Everything seemed copacetic over the years as Johnson returned for the sixth and seventh entries in the saga , but in August 2016, Johnson set the fandom ablaze with a since-deleted Instagram post in which he referred to unnamed members of the cast as "candy asses." Rumors immediately swirled that he was insulting Diesel, who had been part of the Fast franchise since the first movie premiered in 2001. A few days later, after filming for The Fate of the Furious wrapped, Johnson posted another Instagram thanking some of his castmates by name — Scott Eastwood and Nathalie Emmanuel , for example — but pointedly did not mention Diesel. The Post That Started It All

"Some [male costars] conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don't," Johnson wrote via Instagram in August 2016, kicking off the public feud between the two stars. "The ones that don't are too chicken s—t to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses. When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I'm not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling — you're right."

In a follow-up post, the Baywatch star said that conflict could be beneficial, but again didn't name names. “Family is gonna have differences of opinion and fundamental core beliefs,” he wrote. “To me, conflict can be a good thing, when it’s followed by great resolution. I was raised on healthy conflict and welcome it. And like any family, we get better from it.”

Vin Responds

After filming for The Fate of the Furious wrapped in August 2016, Diesel posted a video about how happy he was to be home with his family after making two movies back-to-back. He also included a seeming nod to his drama with Johnson, saying, "Honestly, give me a second and I will tell you everything. Everything."

Free Publicity

In a November 2016 interview with the Los Angeles Times , Johnson implied that the feud was at least partly free publicity for The Fate of the Furious . “I’ve been in the game a long time,” he said of the conflict. “Would Universal have preferred that didn’t happen? Sure, we talked about it. The irony is after that and as they do their tracking and all their analysis, the interest shot through the roof to a whole other level.”

Close Friends

Ahead of the Fate release, Diesel told USA Today that the costars were actually friends and the whole situation had been overblown by fans and critics. "I don’t think the world really realizes how close we are, in a weird way," he explained. "I think some things may be blown out of proportion. I don't think that was his intention. I know he appreciates how much I work this franchise. In my house, he’s Uncle Dwayne."

He also described himself as the punching bag for the franchise and claimed he was taking hits for the good of all the cast and crew. "I protect the franchise," he added. "I protect everybody including Dwayne. I protected Dwayne more than he’ll ever know. And it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have to know. But he appreciates it. He knows it. Dwayne has only got one Vin in his life. Dwayne Johnson only has one big brother in this film world and that’s me."

Family First

Both stars attended the Fate of the Furious premiere in April 2017. “We still love each other, that's my boy," Diesel told Entertainment Tonight . "When I was making that difficult decision, should there be an 8 or not, I called [Johnson] and he said, ‘Brother, I will be there shoulder to shoulder with you to make sure it's the best movie in history.’ And he delivered." Johnson, for his part, said their feud was the result of "differing philosophies."

Brotherhood

After Gibson accused Johnson of being the reason production on F9 was delayed, Diesel defended his costar via Instagram. "Brotherhood ... and all its complexities," he wrote in October 2017, alongside a photo of himself with Johnson in character. "I know there has been a lot of speculation as to why the Fast 9 release date was pushed ... but it would be unfair to say it is anyone's fault. As we plot the course to expand the Fast & Furious universe, one must be mindful to take stock of the roads we took to get here. The pillars of authenticity, family and most importantly, our loyal fans' perspective has been instrumental in procuring success. However, like any vehicle that has run around the globe 8 times, the franchise is in need of maintenance."

Together, But Apart

As viewers of Fate of the Furious quickly noticed, the two actors did not appear together in any scenes. Asked about this fact for a 2018 Rolling Stone interview, Johnson replied, "That is correct. We were not in any scenes together."

A Heartfelt Thank You

Johnson seemingly let go of any remaining grudges after the success of Hobbs & Shaw . In an Instagram video shared in September 2019, he specifically thanked Diesel for his support of the spinoff. "Lastly, but not least, want to thank brother Vin for your support of Hobbs & Shaw ," he said. "I'll be seeing you soon, Toretto."

The Bloodshot star reignited conversation about the feud in June 2021, telling Men's Health that creating the Hobbs character required "tough love" on his part. "My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be,” he explained. “As a producer to say, ‘OK, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and we’re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know’ — Hobbs hits you like a ton of bricks.”

He added that any of his potential critiques were in service of his role as a producer on the franchise. "That took a lot of work," he told the magazine. "We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Fellini-esque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.”

Johnson revealed in July 2021 that he would not be returning to the franchise after he did not appear in 2021’s F9 . “I’ve wished them well,” he told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I wish them well on Fast 9 . And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”

The Moana star also commented on Diesel’s “tough love” remarks, telling the outlet, “I laughed and I laughed hard.”

Some Regrets

In October 2021, Johnson told Vanity Fair that it wasn't his "best day" when he shared the original Instagram post that started it all. "I shouldn’t have shared that," he added. "Because at the end of the day, that goes against my DNA. I don’t share things like that. And I take care of that kind of bulls—t away from the public. They don’t need to know that. That’s why I say it wasn’t my best day.”

Though he regretted the initial post, the Jungle Cruise star said he wouldn't take back his message if given the chance. "I mean what I say when I say it," he shared. "But to express it publicly was not the right thing to do.” He also claimed that unnamed members of the Fate of the Furious crew "quietly thanked" him for speaking out about Diesel's behavior.

Jokes Are Fair Game

“The jokes never end,” Johnson said during a November 2021 appearance on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show when asked about the jab at Diesel in his film Red Notice . “People were asking me about that, and they find a way. These Vin Diesel jokes — which play great, by the way, to the audience, which is always a good thing because it’s all about them — people think these jokes come from me and they actually don’t.”

The former wrestler added: “You’d be surprised with how many people come to me with, ‘I’ve got a great one. I’ve got another great Vin Diesel joke.’ I’m sure you do. [They’re] always funny.”

Feeling Manipulated

After Diesel made a public plea in November 2021 for Johnson to reprise his role despite their differences, the Moana actor shut it down as a form of "manipulation."

"I didn't like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker's death. Leave them out of it," Johnson told CNN one month later. "We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding. My goal all along was to end my amazing journey with this incredible Fast & Furious franchise with gratitude and grace."

Johnson pointed out that he felt "surprised" by Diesel's approach since he has previously made his decision not to return to the franchise very clear.

"This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly — and privately — that I would not be returning to the franchise," he noted. "I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return."

A Shocking Return

Johnson surprised fans in May 2023 with a post-credits cameo in Fast X , hinting that his character, Hobbs, will be back for the franchise's final installments. "The peace treaty … I kind of [brokered it]. We all did. Ultimately, the movie did,” director Louis Leterrier told The Hollywood Reporter after the film's release. “We sort of looked at each other from across the room and winked a few months back, saying, ‘We should work together.’ And then I had this idea and I presented it to the producers and the studio. And then we reached out to Dwayne and his team, and said, ‘Just come and watch the movie. You have to love the movie first.’ So, he came to see the movie and really loved it, and then we started talking. It was very smooth."

Diesel, for his part, said that he and his costars "lead with love" when asked about Johnson's return. "We have such a great cast," he told Entertainment Tonight after the Fast X premiere. "We try to create an environment where people can do their best work. That's all actors really want, is to feel as though they're supported to create unique characters. Characters that last forever, and you see that in this franchise."

Hobbs Is Back — Officially!

The Jumanji star confirmed in June 2023 that he would be making a full return to the Fast and the Furious franchise as Luke Hobbs.

“It has been so incredibly personally gratifying and satisfying and exciting to see your reaction around the world,” he gushed in an Instagram video. “First of all the secret of Hobbs being back … that was a secret that was impossible to keep. Despite us having our differences, me and Vin, we’ve been like brothers for years, and despite our differences, when you lead with — number one, resolve — but also you think about the future and plans that are much bigger than ourselves. Those bigger plans are the buildouts. They are the North Star.”

Johnson added that his “North Star” has remained his “guiding light" throughout his career and in the fast of the Fast and the Furious, that North Star is “the franchise that we love,” the “characters that we love” and the “fans that we love.”

John Cena Weighs In

Cena, who joined the Fast & Furious family after Johnson’s departure, shared that he believed that the actors butted heads since they were so similar in personality.

“You have two very alpha, driven people. You get two, there can only be one,” Cena said in an April 2024 of the “Armchair Expert” podcast. “[I] know the room and just kind of adapt to what's going on. I'm being invited into someone's home, into someone's family and regardless of how they look physically in comparison into another human being, this is one IP that is nine installments and it's an action movie. That's rarefied air.”

Sebastián Lelio Unveils New Musical Feature ‘The Wave’ Inspired by 2018 Chilean Feminist Protests

Daniela López in "The Wave"

Oscar-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio has wrapped production on the newly announced musical film “The Wave,” inspired by the mass protests and university rallies that took place during Chile’s so-called “feminist May” movement in 2018.

“I am fascinated by the idea of using the musical genre with its aura of romance and splendor to speak about the inspiring young feminist movement in Chile, mutual consent in the post #MeToo era and the political potential of the individual or collective voice,” Lelio said in a statement. “‘The Wave’ explores the collision between the urgency for change and the status quo through the intoxicating power of dance, music and… a band of masked women who are determined to change the world.”

“The Wave” is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Pablo Larraín, Rocío Jadue and Lelio and was produced by Fabula and co-financed by Participant, who worked with Lelio on “A Fantastic Woman” and Fremantle. The screenplay was written by Lelio, Manuela Infante, Josefina Fernández and Paloma Salas.

“It is in our DNA to share narratives that resonate with audiences. In this particular instance, our goal is to showcase the remarkable journey of Latin American feminists who, over the last decade, have shattered paradigms and secured rights through their activism,” said producer Jadue. “We aspire to evoke a sense of inspiration and emotion as you witness their impactful journey.”

Co-screenwriter Manuela Infante   added:   “I was a teacher at the university when about 100 female students lay siege to its main building. I stood very close to them and learned a lot from them. In fact, their experiences and stories are part of the foundations of this movie about what comes after the feminist uprising.”

Lelio’s previous films include Participant’s “A Fantastic Woman”, for which he won the Oscar for best foreign language film, the BAFTA-nominated “The Wonder” and the multi award-winning “Gloria”.

The film shot on location in Chile over nine weeks.
