The Playa Venao surf provides a unique surrounding for an epic surf trip.

The beautiful black sand, empty beaches, wildlife, and beautiful nature all around makes it a magic spot.

Here you can disconnect from the world entirely, and enjoy some uncrowded waves, empty beaches, local cuisine, and lovely locals! This little remote town breathes surf and there is a risk you won’t ever want to leave this place!

The different Playa Venao surf breaks

Overview shot of Playa Venao with waves breaking, Playa Venao surf

Playa Venao is a long, stretched out beach with dark sand, and is surrounded by an untouched jungle. This long beach actually has 3 surf breaks, one for beginners, one for intermediate, and one for the more expert surfer.

So definitely a perfect spot to up your skill level! This spot is best surfed during mid tide.

It is not advised to go surfing when it is low tide or high tide (the extremes).

At low tide, the wave brakes dangerously close to the shore, and the waves tend to close out anyway.

If you are up for a fast-barreling wave? Close to Playa Vaneo you find Playa Madronito.

This is again a remote beach. It is a 40-minute walk from Playa Venao, and the hike can be tricky because the roads are not always clear.

There are no amenities, and you will often find yourself alone on this idyllic, gold sanded, beach. This beach break has a sandy bottom and provides a nice barreling, hollow wave and is best surfed from low to mid tide, and preferably with a short board.

In Playa Venao you can rent, cars, bikes and scooters to explore more of the Pacific coastline or take a taxi to Playa Guanico Abajo for $15.

Personally, I recommend renting a 4×4 so you can reach the hidden beaches and multiple surf breaks on the way before you get to Playa Guanico Abajo. It is about 32 miles (53 kilometers) from Venao, and by car it takes about one hour and twenty minutes to get there.

Playa Guanico provides very consistent mellow waves for all skill levels, and there is also a lot of foam on the inside for the beginners.

There are reef and beach breaks that go both left and right.

The south side of the beach is a bit protected, so this needs more swell and a low tide to work. The other end of Playa Guanico works almost all year around and can be surfed on all tides. A longboard is perfect for this spot.

A little bit more to the west you will find Playa Cambutal. It is 37 miles (61 kilometers) away from Playa Venao, and 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) away from Guanico Abajo.

It takes around 1.5 hours to get from Playa Venao to Playa Cambutal.

It is best to make the drive with a 4×4, because you have to go a long way off road to reach the beach entrance.

Playa Cambutal is a beautiful, secluded, often empty, beach with the typical dark sand.

It consists of various beach and point breaks with left and right-hand waves.

On the days with less swell, Playa Cambutal can be surfed by beginners, but this spot is generally better for intermediate and advanced surfers.

This surf spot works with all tides.

Although it is a bit remote,  it is still pretty easy to get to Playa Venao from Panama City.

If you are on a budget, you can take public transportation from Panama City to Playa Venao, this will cost you $10, and takes you about 7 hours to get to your destination.

All you have to do is hop on the bus in Panama City to Las Tablas. From there you take the bus to Pedasi. This is the endpoint of the public bus so from here you can take an affordable taxi ($12) to your destination.

There is a shuttle going from Panama City to Playa Venao every day. It is also possible (and very, very cheap) to rent a car and drive yourself. The roads are very good all the way up to Playa Venao.

The best swell direction for Playa Venao is from the south.

The wind mostly comes from the north, so you’ll get offshore winds almost all year around.

If the swell direction changes, other spots in the area can provide some good waves. For example, Playa Madronito works with all swells, but is best with a southwest swell.

The best time to visit Playa Venao is during the dry season, which is from December until April. There is consistent swell all year around but the rain, storms and humidity during the rainy season, which is from May until November, can be overwhelming.

Playa Venao surf FAQ’s

Yes, Playa Venao is a very safe area. Just like lots of places in Southwest Panama it is not advised to go driving or walking too far from town at night.

The roads (or rather, lack of roads) have no lighting and it is almost impossible to see, so that can be dangerous.

It is easy to get lost sometimes, so if you want to do some off-road exploring, be prepared, and preferably don’t go alone.

Surfers taking off on a wave in Playa Venao

The Playa Venao surf is perfect for beginners, especially in the nearby Playa Guanico Abajo. There are multiple surf schools in the area that give surf lessons, or complete surf camps for all skill level surfers. So, whether you want to improve your skills or go surfing for the very first time, Playa Venao surf is suitable for all levels.

Staying in a surf camp is one of the best ways to take a surf trip. Check out our guide to the best surf camps in Panama to see our top picks for surf stays with empty lineups, all meals included, and oceanfront accommodations. 🌊🏝🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️

There is a shuttle going from Panama City to Playa Venao every day (except Saturday).

This will take about 6 hours and only costs $56 for a one way trip. At several surf camps, the shuttle from Panama City is included in the trip.

Playa Venao has a tropical climate, so lots of rain and humidity.

The water temperature in Playa Venao ranges from 79°F to 82°F (26°C to 29°C). The air temperature is between 72°F to 88°F (23°C to 31°C).

There is a rainy season from May to December with heavy rain pours and high humidity.

It can rain during the dry season but a lot less of the heavy pours.

The humidity is still around 80% during the dry season.

The weather around Playa Cambutal is much friendlier during both seasons. Although it also has a tropical climate, there is less rain and the air is a bit dryer, so less humidity than Playa Venao.

Besides surfing, there are many things to do in the area, like snorkeling, diving and hiking.

The beautiful surroundings provide for lots of activities to do on the low days. And the local guides are all amazing and super willing to show you around some magical spots and share their knowledge.

Between Playa Venao and Playa Cambutal there are many remote, often empty, beaches.

Don’t just go in for a surf anywhere because there can be some hazards, such as strong currents, sharp reef bottoms or river mouths with crocodiles, stingrays and sharks.

My best experience surfing in Playa Venao was taking a local guide and some friends in a 4×4 to search for some empty world class waves, and camp overnight right by the ocean, on an empty beach with nothing but you, nature and the sounds of the waves.

This area of Southwest Panama around Playa Venao, has so many surf spots with untouched, lush nature all around.

And that is just one of the reasons Panama is one of my favorite countries to go surfing! Although some beach accesses can be a bit tricky, it will all be worth it once you are standing on a beautiful beach that merges with the jungle, and you see some perfect empty waves in nice warm water!

The remoteness of it all, and the amazing locals over there, definitely made me extend my stay a couple of weeks, and I am going back soon!

About Surfing in Playa Venao, Panama

If you are a surfer traveling in Panama , you must surf Playa Venao. Just like most countries in Central America, the surf conditions in Panama are perfect for a surf trip, and Playa Venao is no exception. The weather is tropical, the water is warm, and somehow, unlike surf towns in its neighbor Costa Rica , it managed to remain authentic and not touristy. Add to that the phenomenal waves crashing at Playa Venao, and you got yourself a fantastic surf destination.

Playa Venao is located on the Pacific Coast of Panama and is considered a remote and “hard to get” surf destination. For that reason, you will find yourself riding amazing waves with only a few surfers in the water.

Surfing Playa Venao

Surf Seasons in Playa Venao

Like in all the Pacific Coast of Central America, the surf in Playa Venao is up all year long. However, the bigger swells usually come during the wet season, between May and October, when the south swells hit the shore. In the dry season, between November and April, the waves are much smaller and more suitable for beginners.

Surf Spots in Playa Venao

The beach in Playa Venao is absolutely stunning. It is surrounded by an amazing rainforest, rich with sea turtles and marine life, and very authentic and uncrowded. Moreover, when surfing in Playa Venao, you will enjoy beautiful, clean waves divided into a few different breaks. In detail, these are the main surf spots in the area:

Playa Venao Beach Break:

This is the most famous spot and the main reason surfers come to Playa Venao. It is a fast and hollow beach break that goes to both right and left. While anyone can surf here on the small days, including beginners, on a big swell, it is very challenging. It can produce incredible barrels and a steep wall to ride on. Therefore, many national and international surf competitions take place here.

While surfing Playa Venao, you can choose your peak according to the swell and your skill level. For instance, the waves in the middle of the bay are the biggest, while on the sides of the beach, they are smaller.

Playa Guanico:

This spot is located about half an hour from Playa Venao and offers several peaks over a sandy bottom. In fact, Guanico is exposed to any swell direction and tends to be a bit bigger than Playa Venao. Therefore, when the swell is too small to surf in Playa Venao, you can come here and score something to ride.

Playa Cambutal:

This spot is situated about 1 hour from Venao and about half an hour from Guanico and offers 2 different breaks. The first one is called 411 and performs best during high tide. The second one is called Cuatro Secreto (“the 4th secret” in Spanish) and performs better during low tide.

On top of these surf spots, there are many other secret spots in the area, so you are more than welcome to explore them on your own.

Can Beginners Surf in Playa Venao?

There are several surf spots in the Playa Venao area, so surfers of all skill levels can find waves that suit their skills. For instance, beginners can learn and practice in the corners of Venao Bay, where the waves are mellow. Advanced surfers, though, can ride punchy barrels in the middle of the bay.

Surf Hotels in Playa Venao

Playa Venao is an undeveloped surf destination, especially compared to Bocas Del Toro or surf towns in Costa Rica. Therefore, you will not find many options for accommodations. However, the few options are very convenient and close to the waves.

When coming to surf in Playa Venao, you better ensure you stay in the right place, which means as close as possible to the break. So, these are some of the most recommended surf hotels in town:

Selina Playa Venao – at Selina Playa Venao, you will find a private beach area as well as a variety of activities such as surf & SUP lessons, board rentals, adventure tours, yoga classes, a meticulous outdoor pool, restaurant, bar, and a thriving nightlife scene. 4. Amazing waterfall hike within walking distance from Venao.

5. Horseback riding tour.

How to Get to Playa Venao?

Getting to Playa Venao is quite a journey. To reach it, you must drive about 6 hours from the Capital, Panama City. You can also make your way by driving from the Costa Rican border. However, in both cases, you will find yourself on bumpy and dusty roads crossing endless rainforests. Eventually, after this long hassle (let’s call it “adventure”), you will finally be able to settle down, or even better, take your first surf session at Playa Venao.

For any travel assistance you need in Playa Venao, whether it’s hotels, restaurants, or fun activities, check out venaoguide.com .

Conclusion- A Final Thought

Playa Venao is a spectacular surfing beach. With epic barrels and small crowds, it is definitely one of the most recommended surf spots in Panama.

Finally, when you are done surfing in Playa Venao, you can head north to Santa Catalina , or take the long trip to Bocas Del Toro on the Caribbean Coast.

Playa Venao a Beautiful bay and a must visit place in Panama with Great surf

Playa Venao a Beautiful bay and a must visit place in Panama with Great surf

Panama is full of wonderful places -empty beaches, exotic islands an amazing capital city and many more places that you shouldnt miss… But if you ask the young travelers and the surfers where to go in Panama? They will tell you:  PLAYA VENAO I totally understand them, Its a lovely bay with many diffrent sleeping options, almost year-round surfing, comfortable weather and the most delicious food we ate in Panama.

For our story from Playa and Nao click here.

How to get to Playa Venao?

The coolest town in Panama (according to the surfers and all-Israelis) is not that easy to get too.

Location: Playa Venao is on the Pacific coast of Panama about 5 hours by car from Panama City (about 3-4 hours on the main road and then descends to side roads) The coastal strip is near the town of Pedasi (a sweet little town from which you can take tours to Isla Iguana Island)

recommended:

Rent a car – you can do whatever you want, get anywhere (also to get around in the bay and beaches near by you need a car). Public Transport – I found a site that explains all the ways to get to Playa Venao We rented a car from a local company that brings the car to the airport. They were professional, kind and charming. But they don’t allow for Panama’s circular route where you need to leave the car in a diffrent location .

Our first rental company is called CORONADO CARS

Where to Stay in Playa Venao

.Playa Venao is developing very fast. because the town is suitable for both young travelers, families and couples, it has a wide range of accommodation options This is a large strip of beach filled with charming and unique hotels

 Playa Venao Hotel Resort

We chose this hotel because we got a lot of great recommendations on it and also because it has an infinity pool to the sea and we were not disappointed.

Lovely hotel with great service, spacious rooms, a number of restaurants and plenty of space between places. Breakfast is served in an open space by the pool, and cocktails flow into the pool area at sunset. We were at the hotel for a week and enjoyed every moment.

What to do in Playa Venao

We were in Playa for a week, but don’t be surprised if you stay there longer, most of the people we met really loved the place.

Surfing – There is nothing like surfing in Playa Venao (and if you are not a surfer its likely you will start ) there are good conditions for both beginners and advanced throughout the year. A lot of Israelis go to the club in Selina – Its a great surf club with a great atmosphere.

Food –  You will eat really well in Playa Venao, there is a large concentration of diverse restaurants.

 ZIPLINE For details click here

Pedasi – a charming little town about half an hour before arriving in Playa Venao, From the city you can reach Isla Iguana – a stunning island with perfect water and plenty of nature. The city itself is very nice and worth checking out especially when it is carnival time.

Sonice Venao -Around march ther is a music festival which has been around for some years now  – SONICE VENAO is worth checking out if you are in the area.

Travel to Playa Cambutal – please check below more about cambutal.

Where to eat in Playa Venao

We were very satisfied with the food in Playa Venao, the restaurants there are great value for money and especially for taste, there is a great selection: from humus restaurants (did I say there are many Israelis?) to Sushi, Italian, Thai, there is a supermarket and an ice cream and more.

Everywhere in Playa Venao is within walking distance

Recommended Restaurants in Playa Venao:

playa venao resort – Our hotel had 3 restaurants:

Micaela – maximo refinamiento – Pleasant, we mostly we had breakfast there but the hamburgers were also excellent. Sushi at the hotel reception – was very nice.

El sito – In the hotel El Sito the restaurant was excellent not a cheap restaurant but with delicious food and well worth the price. We ate there both evening and morning.

Coleos – A small restaurant in the center (opposite the supermarket) mixed food with Asian touches – the cevice was the most delicious dish I tasted in Panama.

MAMU | Seafood & More – Just opened when we arrived simple and wonderful! The Fish & chips and everything they served was simple and delicious!

La Barca – Beach bar – Cool bar on the sea with tapas.

Panga – considered to be an excellent chef restaurant, we didn’t think that way and thought I wouldn’t write about it, but a friend who recently returned told me that it was excellent and that they had returned a couple of times.

surf trip panama playa venao

Playa Cambutal

About an hour from Playa Venao or 5.5 hours from Panama City you will get to “Playa Cambutal.”

A Stunning bay with black sand and lots of surfing points. Unlike the pulsating Playa Venao, Cambutal symbolizes the tranquility and so you can find retreat yoga – and quieter  more secluded hotels. We arrived on Saturday and found a small local market where the locals (many foreigners who moved to the place) sold their products.

I marked myself a certain hotel that I really wanted to see and did come in for a light snack and was not disappointed, If you want quiet yoga and surfing this is the place for you. We also found a few other cute hotels and a sweet Italian restaurant. It’s totally worth spending three days here or visiting for a day from Playa Venao.

Cambutal hotels

Sansara Resort – A very special hotel that combines yoga and surfing. (The hotel we checked and found in the photos)

Hotel Playa Cambutal – This beachfront hotel is also suitable for families.

Boom Shiva – small rooms. We had dinner in the local Italian restaurant of the place.

A few more tips (because we can? 😀)

During March there is a cold current and the water can be cold. check  before and if you can bring a wetsuit. ( for surfers mainly)

Check out the surfing schools before you decide.

Get ready to stay longer than you planned.

If there are new places please update me 🙂

The Ultimate Guide to Panama Surf

The Panama surf scene hasn’t boomed a la Costa Rica or Nica just yet, but don’t be fooled, becuase there’s some sheer quality in these parts, with consistent swells working on two coastlines; coastlines that are drop-dead beautiful and largely unspoilled at that!

An introduction to surfing in the Caribbean

Panama surf

Panama picks up where Costa Rica leaves off. Squiggling like banana peel through the heart of Central America, the country begins only a few clicks south of everyone’s favorite left-hander, Pavones, carrying on through come of the remotest parts of the Latin Pacific coast and a series of paradise islands that all get the full thwack of the dominant S summer swells.

But that’s also only half the story. In the land of the iconic canal, we’d be remiss not to cast our gaze eastwards to the Caribbean. Some put that down as the capital of Panama surf culture, because it’s the home of a certain Bocas del Toro, an archipelago of glass-clear waters and reef breaks that go off like clockwork when tropical storms brush the edge of South America in winter. The region is home to a glut of almond-barrel reefs and beaches fringed by palms that have cruisy rollers for learners.

Back in the west, you’ll find long runs of coffee-hued sand that roll under jungled hills. Occasionally, the coastline here crumples into dark stones and high cliffs, creating a recipe for good point breaks that peel over the reefs. The hotspot is the western Gulf of Chiriqui right the way across to the de facto Pacific surf hub of Santa Catalina, but the breaks hardly stop as you enter the Gulf of Panama, they demand a bit more S in the swell direction to get firing.

We cannot shake the feeling that Panama will have its day in the same way that Nica and Costa Rica have had theirs. The sheer quality of the waves here, the rustic nature of the coastline, the consistent light offshores – it’s too much to ignore. For now, at least, line ups aren’t overpopulated and, if you’re willing to put up with long bus journeys and bumpy roads, this could very well be the prime surf destination in Central America for the coming years.

Surfing in Panama at a glance

  • Just as good but emptier that neighboring Costa Rica
  • Warm water all round
  • Two coastlines – Caribbean and Pacific

What’s in this guide to Panama surf?

How to get to panama.

Wipeout on Playa Venao

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City is the main international gateway to Panama. Airlines from North America, Europe, South America, Central America, and some parts of Asia offer flights to PTY.

If you’re traveling from Costa Rica or Colombia, you can enter Panama by land. However, it’s essential to be aware of the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. This region is a challenging and dangerous terrain, which is not recommended for travelers due to lack of roads and security concerns – basically, consider it closed and choose the San Blas island boat connection instead (we’ve heard from many people that it’s pretty cool!).

Where to surf in Panama?

Uncrowded Playa Venao

Panama isn’t massive but it’s also not small. What’s more, the country is famously thin and long, with a foot in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

To help matters, let’s split it up into two main surf zones, one on each coast. That’s a good idea because both sides of the country offer very different surf and peak at different times of the year.

Pacific Panama

The Pacific region of Panama has loads going for it. Nowhere near as developed as the Pacific side of Costa Rica, it ranges from remote point breaks to developing beach towns that have surf camps for learners. The star is Verugas province, centered on the main surf town of Santa Catalina. But there’s also much more than that…

Punta Burica

Punta Burica is almost a carbon copy of Pavones – the famed left hander that’s just over the border from hre in Costa Rica – when it works its best. Sadly, it’s a touch more fickle than that already-fickle wave and way more exposed, so will suffer if there’s any onshores (WNW).

Punta Burica can also show some teeth on larger summer swells with good SW in them. When that happens it will shape up more like a G-Land than a Pavones and give smacking, fast lips that turn into semi-hollow walls, all over a pretty shallow reef shelf.

The wave is good enough to have nurtured a few nascent surf camps on the coast just infront.

Puerto Armuelles

Puerto Armuelles is a touch strange because it clings to the eastern side of the Burica headland, meaning the town actually faces east unlike basically anywhere else in the Panamanian Pacific.

The good news is that S swells work nicely into the wide black-sand beaches to throw up wedgy right handers. They’re particularly good around the river mouth, but still not enough to warrant any real local surf infrascruture – very much a pass-through break.

Playa Barqueta

Playa Barqueta is not that nice to look at. It’s mile after mile of dark-sand wedged between two wide estuaries. Those estuaries can produce some long, tapering rights at the mouth of the Rio Platanal, but really this whole run is a mush fest that suffers heavily from any whiff of onshore wind.

Silva de Afuera a

There are a few surf camps in the Playa Barqueta and Las Lajas that have started plying thier trade on the twin left and rights of Silva de Afuera. It’s a tiny offshore rock that’s little more than a few coconut palms and reefs, but it does something the Maldives would be proud of by splitting SW swells into opposite lines. They’re fantastic when they work (5 foot, NE offshores needed), the long, rippable left handers of P-Land especially.

Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is the capital of surf on the Panamanian Pacific coast. It’s really the first town in ever-popular Verugas province that gets swell after the shoreline emerged from the shadow cast by Coiba Island. It’s certainly got the lion’s share of the best surf camps in the country.

They’re mainly around for a fantastically consistent point break of La Punta. It’s a machine for long, bowly rights that have some nice sections for speed and ripping, working best on a pushing tide. Beginners will love the fogiving beach peaks of El Estero just around the corner.

We have a complete guide to surfing in Santa Catalina

Cambutal is a great choice if you’re after off-the-beaten-path surfing that’s for all levels. It’s the lesser-known of the two surf towns in Los Santos Province – the other being Playa Venao (see below). The curving S-bend of a playa out front has lots of peaks that have good rights for learners, but it’s also sandwhiched between patches of reef on either end, which offer pitching right handers that can hollow out on mid-season summer swells with head-on south direction.

Playa Venao

At the very last tip of the Azuero Peninsula that gets S-SW swell coverage, Playa Venao offers something very, very good indeed for the beginner-lower intermediate crowd. On the map, it looks like San Juan del Sur becuase it’s essentially a widened horsshoe bay. It reminds us more of a Panamanian Hiriketiya, not just cos it looks the same but because the main peak is a bulky sandbar wave that bends nicely through the main entrance to the bay.

We have a complete guide to the surfing in Playa Venao right here

Caribbean Panama

There’s only one destination to know about when it comes to the eastern Panama surf zone…

Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro is the captial of the Bocas del Toro Province, which really heads up the surf scene on the Caribbean side of Panama. It gets fed with the same low-pressure systems as Puerto Veijo does in Costa Rica, which means a peak season between December and March, though there is another small swell window off the hurricaines in the late summer.

The sectiony left at Carenero Point is a stand out for sure. Get a surf camp and head out on a boat and you can surf it morning to night without getting bored. But the variety is kinda shocking. Like, you have the Supertubos-esque shore pounder at Bluff Beach and the almond barrel at Paunch Reef.

Check out our complete guide to surfing in Bocas del Toro

When to surf in Panama?

Cambutal Beach in Panama

Panama boasts consistent surf year-round, but the ideal time varies based on the coast:

  • Pacific Coast : The peak season is from April to October. During these months, south swells bring larger and more consistent waves, suitable for all skill levels. There’s hardly a jot of wind in the region to be honest, but when they do breeze through, it’s likely to be dominant ENE trades that groom the lines of La Punta into something extra special.
  • Caribbean Coast : Best surfed between December and March. North swells during this period produce cleaner, glassier conditions. They’ll originate deep down in the gulf between here and Colombia, meaning there’s plenty of time to see the sets clean up and gather strength. There’s a short swell window in July-August, too, which tends to be a touch smaller but has nice E swells off the central Caribbean hurricane belt.

Regardless of the coast, early mornings usually offer calmer winds and glassier wave conditions.

Surf camps in Panama

Waluaa Surf & Yoga

We’d say that Panama has one of the most promising arrays of young surf camps on the planet right now. The last five years have been a bit of a eureka moment for surfers fed up of the growing crowds of Costa Rica. Just over the border were endless runs of beach break and point breaks to match Pura Vida and now they’re being monetized.

To be frank, we’d be pleased if it stayed in the select few surf hubs where it’s started. We know that’s not likely to happen but it would be good for the frontier surf vibe of the place. For now, you’ve generally got a choice of camps in Santa Catalina, Bocas del Toro, and Venao , many of them very high-quality indeed!

  • Waluaa Surf & Yoga – A Santa Catalina mainstay, these guys have taken the tried-and-tested mold of a Costa Rican surf-yoga camp and are offering it on the unspoiled beaches of Verugas province. They offer 10 hours of ISA-qualified instruction and 2x video feedback sessions, plus all sorts on top, from yoga classes to boat trips to secluded beaches.
  • El Ranchito Surfcamp – To really feel that off-the-beaten-path vibe that the Panama surf is known for, pick El Ranchito Surfcamp. You’ll bed down in bell tents or in the coast forests and get 1.5 hours of tuition with Biarritz-born Laurent

Need more inspo? We’ve got the lowdown on the very best surf camps in Panama right here, which has seven options in total, mainly over on the Pacific side.

Surf in Playa Venao

Surf in eco venao.

Playa Venao is considered Panama’s best beach break, a top surfing destination.

The main wave breaks left and right. There is usually always something to surf unlike other spots in the area that depend on swells.

Best Surfing spot in Panama

surf eco venao

The break is best approaching and around high tide. When it’s real big, there are good breaks in other spots on the same beach.

It does close out when the waves go much higher than eight feet.

The sand floor means it’s also a great beginners beach.

People say that you can learn in a few weeks what would take months in other spots – mainly because of the consistent waves in Venao.

PLAYA VENAO  TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get there, the best international airport in panama to fly into is the tocumen international airport (pty). from the airport there are at least three good ways to get to playa venao..

Runs about $400 USD for a week / drive time from the city to Playa Venao is about 5 hours.

Fly on Air Panama

Runs about $270 USD round trip from Albrook Airport (30 minutes from PTY) / this flight goes into Chitre which is then a 1.5 hour drive to Playa Venao.

Private Shuttle

$450 USD round trip. Service will pick you up from airport and drop you off at airport (PTY).

Personally I think it makes sense for anyone coming into Panama City to stay for 1-2 nights to break up the travel time. The Casco Viejo area is amazing, and so cool to visit for a day or two. Then I would recommend renting a car and driving on your own to the beach. Then you will have wheels the entire week you are there. The phone GPS APP called “Waze” works amazingly well in Panama and can get you to Playa Venao very easy!

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Panama is a tropical location and being such that means it’s warm all the time. there are two distinct seasons in panama, the wet and dry season. the wet season runs from may through oct. and the dry season runs from november through april..

Typical temperature during the daytime ranges in the mid to upper 80 degree F or the mid to upper 20 degree C. At night, the temp dips down into the mid to upper 70 degree F or the lower 20 degree C range.

The wet season which begins in May really doesn’t rain all too much. From May through early August if we get rain it’s typically passing afternoon showers that last 30 minutes or so and cool off the jungle and then clear out for a nice evening. From September and October heavy rain should be expected, for extended periods of time. October to May is the Dry Season. The dry season is just that; dry and dusty. There is no rain and plenty of sunshine!

The ocean is very comfy in the low 80 – 82 degree F range or the 26 – 28 degree C range. There is no need for a wetsuit but if you get chilled easily you may want a 1m vest for those early am dawn patrols.
