• Near the surface of the Earth, one pixel represents about .002 meter (2 millimeters). That leaves a lot of room for information about drilling, diving, and metal detectors.
• At the deepest place yet reached by people ( hi, James Cameron! ), one pixel represents one meter.
• Toward the center of the Earth, one pixel represents 2,500 meters (2.5 kilometers). At this scale, you can move through the entire core in one swipe!

• The Gutenberg discontinuity is the boundary between Earth’s mantle and core. CMB simply stands for “core mantle boundary.”

The ambitious ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Earth’ was recorded on January 18, 1974, as Rick Wakeman recorded live with a choir, an orchestra, and a rock group.

Ever since punk broke, Rick Wakeman ’s detractors have jeered at what they perceive to be his excessive virtuosity, yet it’s undeniable that the keyboard maestro has played a vital role in fashioning a swathe of prog rock’s most venerable releases . First coming to prominence after playing the Mellotron part on David Bowie ’s breakthrough 1969 hit “Space Oddity,” Wakeman then spent two years with respected English folk-rockers Strawbs before replacing Tony Kaye in nascent prog superstars Yes, prior to the recording of their multi-platinum-selling 1971 LP, Fragile . All this laid the groundwork for arguably his most ambitious work, the solo album Journey To The Centre Of The Earth .

The ceaselessly creative Rick Wakeman had embarked on a solo career in 1973 with The Six Wives Of Henry VIII , eventually selling 15 million copies worldwide. Even before that was released, however, he’d started work on a musical re-enactment of Jules Verne’s science fiction novel Journey To The Centre Of The Earth , yet regardless of The Six Wives ’ success and Yes’ massive-selling double-set Tales From Topographic Oceans , Wakeman’s record company, A&M, balked at bankrolling studio sessions involving a choir and a full orchestra as well as a rock band.

Eventually, a compromise was struck. With Rick Wakeman himself reputedly partially funding the project himself, A&M agreed to record his epic project live at London’s Royal Festival Hall, on the night of January 18, 1974. For this much-anticipated sold-out event, Wakeman was joined by the English Chamber Choir, the London Symphony Orchestra, a rock ensemble (mostly hand-picked from pub musicians who frequented his local in rural Buckinghamshire), and Blow-Up star David Hemmings: the latter recruited to narrate Verne’s story, which centered around the fictitious trio of Professor Lidenbrok, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans, who – with dramatic consequences – follow a passage to the Earth’s core.

A&M invested in recording just the one night’s performance but, with the pressure on, Wakeman and his assembled cast duly rose to the occasion. Though their hour-long show was edited down to 40 minutes for vinyl-cutting purposes, the LP’s two, ever-morphing 20-minute movements (“The Journey”/“The Recollection” and “The Battle”/“The Forest”) are nonetheless captivating, with Hemmings’ commanding oration offset by ghostly contributions from the chamber choir, and the LSO’s occasional Wagnerian overload tempered by funk-flavored rock passages, with Wakeman’s Minimoog and/or clavinet mostly leading from the front.

Journey To The Centre Of The Earth was rapturously received on the night, but its long-term commercial success was by no means a given. A&M dithered until co-founder Jerry Moss personally agreed to its release, but Wakeman’s self-belief was vindicated when the LP finally hit the racks. Following its release, on May 3, 1974, the album entered the UK Top 40, topping the chart on May 25, while peaking at No.3 on the US Billboard 200. Long after yielding an Ivor Novello Award and over 14 million sales for its creator, it continues to beguile new generations of fans.

Title: Darina Zhunussova’s Journey Through Eurasian Studies to Create Impact at Georgetown

Coming to Georgetown University from her home country of Kazakhstan, Darina Zhunussova (MAERES’24) brought with her a passion for international relations and anthropology. She was drawn to the university for its renowned programs and the vibrant community it promised. 

She came to the Center for Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies (CERES) master’s program, which offered her an interdisciplinary lens through which to view her native region’s dynamics. “I chose the Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies program because of my deep passion for the region and its rich cultural heritage,” Zhunussova says. “I am very proud to be part of the CERES community.”

In the Classroom

Zhunussova’s choice of study was driven by an intrinsic connection to her homeland and a curiosity about its place in the broader geopolitical landscape. “Coming from Kazakhstan, I have [been] seeking to gain a nuanced understanding of Central Asia,” she says. Zhunussova enjoys the multidisciplinary nature of the MAERES program. “It offers a holistic understanding of the region from various perspectives, including history, politics, culture and economics.”

This passion was nurtured through courses like Demography and Health in Eurasia, where Adjunct Professor Judy Twigg’s enthusiasm and experience in the subject provided Zhunussova with a nuanced understanding of the region’s demographic challenges. “Professor Twigg taught with a passion and expertise that made each lecture engaging and thought-provoking,” Zhunussova says.

Fieldwork and Real-World Application

“During my time at Georgetown, I found myself increasingly drawn to ethnographic research and anthropology,” Zhunussova says. The theoretical knowledge she gained within the classrooms of SFS was complemented by Zhunussova’s fieldwork in Kazakhstan, where she engaged in ethnographic research through interviewing Russian immigrants to Kazakhstan. The capstone focused on understanding Russian immigrant adaptation and polarization in Kazakhstan after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Zhunussova conducted 40 in-depth interviews focusing on immigrants’ experience with discrimination and comparing the Russian state narrative to immigrants’ actual experiences. This hands-on experience was crucial for her capstone project and her ambitions to apply academic insights to real-world contexts.

Fostering Community and Celebrating Diversity

At Georgetown, Zhunussova found more than just an academic community; she found a second home. Through her role as a student fellow and program assistant at CERES, she became a part of a vibrant ecosystem, contributing to the center’s academic and cultural initiatives. 

The Nowruz celebration by the Georgetown Iranian Cultural Society was a crucial moment for Zhunussova, symbolizing the university’s embrace of cultural diversity. This festival, which marks the new year at the spring equinox in Kazakhstan and throughout the region, is rich with traditions of renewal, unity, and the rejuvenation of nature. Reflecting on this, Zhunussova says, “Georgetown became not just a place of learning, but a home away from home where our cultural identities were celebrated and honored with open arms.”

Mentorship played a critical role in Zhunussova’s journey at SFS. She credits professors Kathleen Smith, Michael David-Fox and Jennifer Wistrand for their invaluable guidance on her capstone project and academic endeavors, and CERES Director of Academic Programs Lisa Gordinier’s support for non-academic challenges. “I am thankful to each and every professor that I had the privilege to work with or take a class from,” Zhunussova says.

A Vision for the Future

Reflecting on her journey, Zhunussova treasures the friendships and insights that she has gained at Georgetown. “The bonds forged during library study sessions, lively debates in class, and shared experiences on and off campus have become an integral part of my Georgetown journey,” she says.

Looking forward, Zhunussova is determined to make a difference for public policy in Kazakhstan. “My time at SFS helped to strengthen my critical thinking abilities, analytical skills, and a global perspective that I plan to leverage to contribute meaningfully to Kazakhstan’s progress.”
