Your cruise from the UK reaches the Mediterranean Sea at Gibraltar, passing through the narrow straits separating Europe from North Africa. Noted for its famous rock and its colony of apes, Gibraltar has a very British feel.
Along the coast of Spain call at flamboyant Barcelona, with its unfinished symbol of the Sagrada Familia and the amazing shapes of the Gaudi sculptures and buildings. In complete contrast are the beaches and towns of Mallorca and Ibiza.
For that touch of glamour, include Cannes, St Tropez or Monte Carlo on your cruise itinerary. These smart French resorts on the French Riviera have their own unique appeal.
Call at Livorno on the Italian coast, gateway to see some of the finest works of art and architecture in the world in Pisa and Florence. Other popular ports are Civitavecchia, just a stone’s throw from the ancient city of Rome, and Naples, close to the amazingly preserved ruins of Pompeii.
Cruise the Adriatic Sea and call at the Greek island of Corfu, sail into beautiful Kotor Bay in Montenegro, then visit the ancient Croatian walled town of Dubrovnik before reaching the unique canal city of Venice. See the major sights including St Mark's Cathedral and the Doge's Palace.
Longer cruises from the UK may visit the beautiful Greek islands of lively Mykonos, picture-postcard Santorini and historic Rhodes.

Mediterranean Cruises from Southampton
A gateway to Europe’s glittering coast
Follow the sun south on one of our Mediterranean cruises from Southampton to the sun-drenched Balearics, the lavender-fragranced hills of Provence, and Italy’s glorious coastline. Explore cosmopolitan seafront cities along the coast of Spain. Take in the vibrant art scene of Malaga, and stop for tapas in a sunlit square. Sample colorful paella in Valencia, and admire the dazzling modernist architecture of Barcelona, the extraordinary Sagrada Familia basilica at its heart.
Cruises from Southampton to the Mediterranean visit Italy, too, with time to explore Rome’s famous Colosseum and admire Michelangelo’s exquisite David in Florence. France is yet another highlight, whether you spend your time following the trail of the Impressionists to Aix-en-Provence, or sitting on the bustling waterfront in Marseille with a bowl of rich bouillabaisse and a glass of chilled rosé.
Itineraries
Featured ports of call.
Catalunya’s dynamic capital bursts with personality. Explore the maze of the old Gothic Quarter, or head to the Eixample neighborhood to admire the vibrant, organic structures designed by legendary architect Antoni Gaudí. There’s art for every taste, from the Picasso Museum to the striking Joan Miró Foundation on Montjuic Hill. Fashionable Barceloneta, the former fishing quarter, is the best place to head on a sunny day for tapas on the waterfront.
Italy’s stylish capital is peppered with extraordinary relics and archaeological sites, chic shopping streets, and cobbled squares adorned with lavish baroque fountains. Visit the mighty Colosseum, the setting of ancient gladiatorial battles, and the beautiful Sistine Chapel. Gaze at the Pantheon’s vast dome, people-watch on the Spanish Steps, and toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain. No visit to the Eternal City is complete without gelato and flavor-packed pasta alla carbonara.
Florence/Pisa
Explore the beauty of Tuscany from La Spezia, the gateway to historic Pisa and elegant Florence. Marvel at the architecture in Pisa’s Square of Miracles and the iconic Leaning Tower. Visit Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, to admire the magnificent cathedral and the treasures of the Accademia Gallery. Or head along the coast to the Cinque Terre, five tiny fishing villages of gelato-colored houses that cling to plunging cliffs.

Mediterranean Cruises
Personalized cruise holidays and all the romance of the med.
A Mediterranean cruise holiday is a perfect opportunity to discover multiple iconic landmarks in a short space of time. We have some of the most exciting port-cities and sun-kissed islands in the eastern Mediterranean for you to explore including Athens, Santorini, Istanbul, and much more. For Homer, it was the wine-dark sea of adventurers and heroes: the one and only Mediterranean. With vibrant cities, lavish architecture, dramatic landscapes, volcanic islands and a rich cultural history, the Mediterranean boasts a uniquely mythic stature and promises to be an exciting adventure into lands of legends where you can investigate the mystery of history.Much of its timeless allure comes from influential civilizations that sprang up on its shores and in exchanger goods and turf battles. For you, the modern explorer, a happy byproduct of so many centuries of commerce and competing conquests is a catalog of ancient ruins that stir the imagination.Add to all that rugged coastlines, beautiful beaches, glistening turquoise waters and raking farmlands, the stunning scenery is a sight to savor. Renowned for their warm hospitality, the locals invite you to experience age-old traditions and lose yourself in a bevy of tastes, sounds and smells.
Hospitality and Vitality
Despite the individual differences between the islands and port cities of the Mediterranean, not to mention the turbulence and tribulations they have all endured at the hands of pirates and foreign powers, the local populations retained their vitality and historic characteristics. The people who live on the shores of the Mediterranean basin are influenced by a cultural mixing pot—ancient Greek, Egyptian, Byzantine, Frankish, Ottoman and many more—making for a uniquely cosmopolitan tapestry. Islanders are people of the sea and the welcome they extend to visitors is genuinely warm; something you’ll experience from the smallest bakery in Patmos to the trendiest boutique in Mykonos.Combined with authentic cuisine and cultural excursions that give you the opportunity to experience the local way of life, we take you on a romantic adventure geared towards your personal interests. And thanks to an amiable year-round climate, cruise Holidays in the eastern Mediterranean are a pleasure to behold in every season.Celestyal Cruises have several scintillating voyages in the eastern Mediterranean for you to experience. Cruises are a well-trodden holiday option, offering the opportunity to explore various parts of the world while enjoying the comfort of a hotel on the seas.
These trips are popular with both families and couples, but they can be just as rewarding and enjoyable for solo travellers, giving you as much flexibility as you want along with opportunities to meet like-minded holidaymakers and see some of the world’s finest tourist destinations .
Daily activities will keep you entertained while onboard, while organised excursions or solo trips let you see a magnificent range of towns and cities at your leisure. Solo-specific events mean that meeting other travellers is as easy as sitting down to dinner, while you’ll have a comfortable solo cabin to come back to at the end of each day. Choose the right cruise and you’ll get all of this while avoiding the common ‘singles surcharge’.
If you’ve got the itch to book, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best cruise liners for single passengers below.
Riviera Travel
Riviera Travel operates river cruises around the world, with destinations as far as Egypt and Vietnam . Nevertheless, the focus is on European river cruises , with plenty of packages to the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro and Danube on offer. Packages include return flights, airport transfers and all meals onboard, with an extensive range of excursions and activities including guided tours and on-board folk music shows.

European river cruises are the only option that Riviera offers for solo travellers, with seven routes that cover the continent’s main rivers. Prices include all the same features as a standard booking – such as excursions, onboard meals and Wi-Fi – but with spacious single occupancy cabins and welcome dinners to help you meet people. Solo bookings also include the ‘superior’ drinks package, which gives guests an extensive selection of alcoholic drinks available both at lunch and between 6pm and midnight. The Rhine and Moselle package is their most affordable, starting in Cologne and taking you to beautiful towns like Koblenz and Rudesheim.
Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages offers adult-only cruises packed with a huge range of activities, from morning yoga classes to evening cabaret. There are plenty of solo cabins – their inaugural ship, Scarlet Lady, has 46 – and itineraries include solo meet-ups, activities and excursions with plenty of opportunities to meet other single travellers.
Packages include food, drink and activities as standard. With only four ships in the fleet, your choice of destination is slightly more limited, though you can still visit picturesque locations in Europe, the Caribbean , parts of Southern Asia and Australia. The Southeastern Caribbean Isles package will take you on a roundtrip from Puerto Rico, stopping in Guadeloupe, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian was the first cruise company to build ships with cabins and lounge areas that were specifically for solo travellers, and there are now around 1,000 solo cabins across its ships. Solo travellers can choose from Oceanview rooms, inside rooms, rooms with a balcony and even studios, and they will have access to the Solo Lounge – a private lounge only for guests travelling alone – where various events and happy hours are held.
Normal packages include food and onboard activities, though several bookings let you choose to add extras – from shore excursions to speciality meals or a free bar – for a small added fee. Norwegian sail across a wide range of destinations too, from the British Isles and the Mediterranean to Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean.
Tauck claims to have specialised in solo travel for over 90 years, and today this translates to special solo savings and no single supplement on European river cruises. Travellers looking to see the continent ‘solo style’ can benefit from savings of up to £750, and will enjoy more stylish, contemporary ships with fewer guests for an overall more luxurious experience. Trips cover Europe’s main waterways, and prices include all food, drink, activities and shore tours. Choose the Yuletide package between Brussels and Amsterdam for a festive experience at some of the best Christmas markets – and prettiest waterways – on the continent.
Ambassador Cruise Line
Ambassador is a new cruise line where trips begin in cities around the UK , including Liverpool , Belfast, Dundee and Bristol. Both Ambience and Ambition have 89 dedicated cabins set aside for solo travellers, available “at a special single supplement against the equivalent twin fare based on selected single cabin categories”. The operator journeys to a vast range of destinations considering there are only two ships in its fleet, with voyages going as far as Singapore , Brazil and New Zealand.
Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. If cruising during winter, visit Norway to see wondrous fjords and (possibly) the aurora borealis, with the Land of the Northern Lights package.
Oceania has made considerable investment in providing options for solo travellers, with its newest ship, Vista, containing six 270-square-foot solo cabins that include balconies, premium lounge access and a welcome bottle of champagne. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views.
Oceania voyages make it easy to meet like-minded travellers with solo meet-and-greet events, large mixed dining tables, mixed shore excursions and single-traveller activities such as art classes. Destinations range from the Mediterranean and Scandinavia to South Africa and the tropics, meaning solo travellers have opportunities to see a large portion of the world alone. Book the 14-day Miami to Tenerife cruise to experience Mediterranean charm and Caribbean beauty in late March.
Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean say that they do not “have specific pricing for single occupancy” cabins, but that they do offer single cabins on some of their ships, including Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia.
Passengers can reserve inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms and super studio ocean view stateroom with balconies, giving them between 101 and 199 square feet of space. Everything else will be the same as usual, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits as every other guests without paying a premium. If departing from the UK, the only tours available take you around Europe; the most extensive is the Mediterranean Cities package, covering Seville, Sardinia, Rome , Lisbon and more.

BARCELONA, Spain, (April 23, 2024) – In a spectacular celebration today at the Port of Barcelona, award-winning actress and performer Hannah Waddingham officially welcomed the newest and most innovative Princess Cruises ship – Sun Princess – serving as godmother during a star-studded naming ceremony.
The time-honored maritime tradition took place onboard Sun Princess in the all-new Princess Arena and Waddingham, alongside the ship’s Captain Craig Street, joyously pronounced, “I name this ship Sun Princess. May God bless her and all who sail on her.” She then released the celebratory bottle of Champagne to smash against the ship wishing good fortune to all of the ship’s guests and crew sailing to incredible destinations all over the world.
“Hannah is globally admired and adored for her immense talent and determination. Those qualities coupled with her family’s deep connection and love for the sea make her the perfect godmother for our sensational new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, Princess Cruises president. “We are honored that she has joined us for this pinnacle moment, and that she will remain a treasured part of the ship’s legacy forever.”
Known for her adored role as Rebecca Welton in “Ted Lasso,” Waddingham said being named Sun Princess godmother is a “pinch me” moment as she joins an esteemed group of women, including members of the Royal Family, who have also served as godmothers to Princess ships: Diana, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess, 1984); Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales (Royal Princess 2013); Audrey Hepburn (Star Princess, 1989); Sophia Loren (Crown Princess, 1990); Martha Stewart (Crown Princess, 2006); among many notable celebrities and dignitaries.
Waddingham grew up boating and has fond memories of weekends in Dunkirk. In addition, her grandfather served in the Royal Navy during World War II.
“As much as theatre has always rippled through my bloodstream so too has a strong, historic familial connection with the Royal Navy and all things nautical,” said Waddingham. “I have of course seen over the years the iconic godmothers who have been asked to represent these magnificent ships and looked on in awe. It is therefore such a great privilege to have been asked to act as Godmother to the Sun Princess, first of her class. I can’t quite believe it.”
Actor and magician Michael Carbonaro served as master of ceremonies for the event, and joined by a host of celebrities and TV personalities including Tyra Banks, Romero Britto, Randy Fenoli, Jeff Corwin, Rob Floyd, along with celebrated chefs Dario Cecchini, Makoto Okuwa, and beloved original “Love Boat” cast members Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), Ted Lange (Isaac) and Bernie Kopell (Doc).
In addition, Natasha Bedingfield was on hand to fittingly perform her smash hit “Pocket Full of Sunshine,” along with other award-winning hits including “Unwritten.”

Unlike anything else in cruising, the venue also highlights the talents of Princess Cruises’ Head of Culinary Arts Rudi Sodamin who has created an array of tantalizing choices that embody profound passion, exquisite flavor, and boundless creativity with a seven-course, prix fixe menu ($149 per person) that begins with a flute of Champagne upon arrival and features luxury ingredients including lobster, caviar and truffles, and dessert options that always include chocolate fondue.

Oceania Cruises debuts new Mediterranean Sailings for 2025
Oceania Cruises, the world’s leading culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, has debuted an array of new 2025 Mediterranean sailings, ranging from nine to 56 days, to whisk guests to some of the most breathtaking destinations in Europe. The line’s Marina and Nautica will set sail on enticing voyages taking in iconic islands in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic; well-loved European resort towns and bustling cities, and lesser-known ports of call.
Cities including Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Rome and Lisbon frame the 16 voyages, allowing the ships to meander from lively jet-set resort towns such as Monte Carlo, Cannes, Positano and Sorrento, to hidden gems including Tirana and Sarande in Albania; Trapani in Sicily; Calvi and Propriano in Corsica, and Sibenik in Croatia.
Thanks to Oceania Cruises’ extensive set of small-group, immersive shore excursions, guests can rediscover previously-visited favourites through a new lens, or discover new places for the very first time. For example, whilst in Santorini, travellers can choose an adventurous tour of the island’s active volcanoes, or whilst in Montenegro, see a new side of Kotor by exploring Europe’s southernmost fjord, Boka Bay.
“Oceania Cruises is rightly renowned for its inventive and captivating itineraries; and our array of 2025 Mediterranean sailings is the perfect way to spotlight one of the most popular and exciting cruise regions of the world,” stated Frank A. Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. “With shore excursions to inspire everyone, from active adventurous types to history buffs to foodies, our small luxurious ships are the perfect way to discover this majestic region of the world.”

The 1,250-guest ship, Marina , will undergo an expansive refurbishment in May 2024. All Penthouse Suites and bathrooms will be completely reinspired, and the ship’s public areas will be refreshed.

The world’s best 50 beaches in 2024 – and just one in the UK makes the list
- Ryan Gray , Travel Reporter
- Published : 16:29, 29 Apr 2024
- Updated : 16:29, 29 Apr 2024
- Published : Invalid Date,
THE best 50 beaches in the world have been revealed, with beautiful stretches of sand and clear blue waters.
Just one in the UK made the list - with the top spot going to a very exotic island .
Revealed by the The World’s 50 Best Beaches, and presented by Banana Boat, the annual study uses both their "own experiences and insights" as well as "the collective expertise of countless travel professionals".
Along with thousands of votes from experts, the study looks at eight different criteria - uniqueness, local wildness, how untouched it is, the "soundtrack of nature," ease of access, water calmness, lack of crowds and how "frequently idyllic" it is.
And the top spot went to Trunk Bay in the US Virgin Islands .
Calling it the "quintessential Caribbean paradise," the soft sand and clear waters were raved about, as well as calm waters due to it's sheltered landscape.

It is named after the Leatherback turtle (known locally as "trunks"), where smaller turtles are known to nest in the summer months.
If you fancy visiting, it comes with a cost - flights from the UK to the US Virgin Islands start from £801 with Virgin Atlantic .
Thankfully, one in England also made the top 50.
The UK's entrant came in 48th place, with Cornwall 's Kynance Cove taking the spot.

The study said: "Famed for its rugged beauty and serpentine rock formations, this stunning cove in Cornwall features a striking landscape with water a shade of turquoise usually seen in the Caribbean.
"The combination of turquoise waters and white sand makes it a remarkable standout, especially given its more northern location."
It's not the only list to praise the beach, with a previous study finding that Kynance Cove is even the warmest UK beach in the winter, with an average temperature of 11.5C.
Kynance is more than just a beach, however, with the National Trust site also home to plenty of seaside walking routes that visitors love trekking along.
Additionally, it's home to a natural sea pool , hidden below the rugged cliffs, known as the Mermaid Pool.
The beach was also included in Lonely Planet's top 100 beaches in the world, published earlier this year.

It was joined by Rhossili Bay in Wales , Durdle Door in Dorset and West Beach, Scotland.
However, none of those beaches joined it in the new top 50 list.
Other high entries slightly closer to home than the top spot included Cala Mariolu in Italy (2nd), Voutoumi Beach in Greece (5th) and Calo Des Moro in Spain (11th).
The highest ranking of those, Cala Mariolu, is found in Sardinia , where a limit on the number of tourists allowed to visit was introduced in 2022.
Only 700 people per day are permitted to visit the beach, each having to book in advance using an app.
It was described by the study as having "striking beauty everywhere you turn" as well as a "sense of privacy and adventure" .
Elsewhere, fifth place Voutoumi beach is found on Antipaxos , one of Greece's smallest islands.
Its shallow waters make it perfect for paddling with families, with the study labelling it "quiet and pristine compared to more accessible Greek beaches".
Calo des Moro in Majorca , Spain is highly rated for similar reasons, with tourists enjoying its calm waters, tucked away in secluded cove.
It does get busy during the summer, but either side of those months, while it's still warm, it's much quieter.
