1. shri krishna museum.

Shri Krishna played an essential role in the war of Mahabharata. And this museum displays everything about Him and has been alone of its kind since 1987.

The present-day museum has nine galleries where you will see archaeological artifacts from Kurukshetra, Haryana, Dwarka, Mathura, and other parts of the country.

These galleries display wood carvings, ivory works, metal artifacts, inscriptions, miniature paintings, and more related to Lord Krishna.

Another gallery depicts the lifetime of Sri Krishna and the Mahabharata — this is the museum’s main attraction. Besides this, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions happen throughout the year.

2. Brahma Sarovar

The most visited, Brahma Sarovar, is the largest artificial lake in Asia and one of the best among Kurukshetra tourist places.

This lake gets its name after the creator of this universe, Lord Brahma, as per Hinduism. As per believers, this lake is precisely the place where Brahma Ji performed his first Yagya.

Further, King Kuru renovated this place.

Kurukshetra gets its name after the name of King Kuru. He was the ancestor of Pandavas and Kauravas.

The result of bathing in this sacred lake on the day of a solar eclipse is equivalent to performing a hundred Ashwamedha Yagyas.

Spread over a circumference of about 4 kilometers, you’ll see Sarveshwar Mahadev temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the middle of this lake. On one side of it is the Sri Krishna Arjuna chariot. This colossal statue made of bronze weighing 35 tons looks grand. It depicts Krishna preaching to Arjuna.

Gita Jayanti celebrations or International Gita Mahotsav occur every year to November-December. This event happens on a large scale, in which devotees from all over the country come to participate.

4. Sheikh Chilli’s Tomb and Raja Harsha’s Mound

You may have heard about the stories of Sheikh Chilli.

Sheikh Chilli (Sheikh Chaheli), or Abdul Rahim (Abdul Razzaq), was a Sufi saint. And the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, Dara Shikoh, built his tomb in the 17th century. (Shah Jahan is known for the Taj Mahal — a wonder of the world).

Built of red sandstone and marble, the complex of this tomb is pleasing to see at first sight. The complex has a mosque, a Madrasa, and a museum under the protection of the ASI.

Behind the tomb, you’ll find Raja’s mound — spread over a radius of 1.5 km. Experts have found the cultural remains from the Kushan to the Mughal period (which are in the museum).

Opening hours: 9 am to 5 pm. Ticket rate: INR 25 for Indian tourists and INR 100 for foreign tourists.

5. Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is a few meters away from Sheikh Chilli Tomb. The area is called Thanesar after the name of this temple (Sthaneshwar) dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to scholars, Lord Brahma Himself established the Shivling here. Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, also visited this place and spent some days.

There is also a belief that before the Mahabharata war, Lord Krishna, along with the Pandavas, worshiped the Shivling located here and got the blessings to be victorious in the Mahabharata war.

There is also a pool in front of the temple — for reflections and spending some time with the almighty.

Maratha general Sadashiv Rao renovated the temple giving its present-day form after the third Battle of Panipat.

6. Shri Devikup Bhadrakali Temple

Kurukshetra has one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of Goddess spread all over India. If you seek blessings from Devi Ji, this place is a must among other Kurukshetra tourist places.

You may also know this temple by its other names vis-à-vis Savitri Peeth, Devi Peeth, or Kalika Peeth.

For up-close viewing of the reptiles, a high mound has been built inside the tank. To help maintain ecosystem balance, the department purchased four pairs of crocodiles from the Crocodile Bank in Madras.

Brahma sarovar.

Brahma Sarovar, as its name suggests, is a water tank in Thanesar in Haryana. Hindus consider it sacred and it is incredibly beautiful.They say that taking a dip in the water inside the tank can help one attain salvation. Tourists can spend hours here watching the sunset with its reddish and golden reflection in the water. This tomb belongs to Sheikh Chilli who was a scholar and a teacher to Dara Shikoh, eldest son of the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. There are two tombs, a madarsa, a beautiful garden and a small archaeological museum. Sheikh Chilli dedicated a second tomb to his wife. Sheikh Chilli’s tomb has an octagonal figure, constructed from buff sandstone and has a pearl shaped marble dome that sits on its top like a crown. His wife’s tomb is made from red sandstone, has a marble dome and carved floral designs. It is also believed to be similar to Taj Mahal in certain aspects. The museum houses some seals, terracotta sculptures, ornaments, swords, etc. from various kingdoms that existed between first and seventh centuries. Most of the structures in this complex have a substantial touch of Persian architecture. Sheikh Chilli’s tomb is not too crowded, which is the most comforting fact. Visitors can see everything with peace, sit comfortably, have discussions and click pictures. The area near the main tomb offers a very good view and hence, some people even prefer to sit here for a little longer to relax.

Bhor Saidan Crocodile Farm

There was a tank full of crocodiles in village Bhaur Saidan, situated on Pehowa-Kurukshetra road, 22 kms from Kurukshetra. The area of this tank was acquired and its management was taken over by the Forest Department during 1982-83. They increased the habitat of this farm and fenced the periphery. We obtained four pairs of crocodile from Crocodile Bank, Madras, and released them there. The present population is 25. They erected a high mound inside the tank for watching the reptiles from a close range.

Raja Karna Ka Kila

Once a sprawling fort, the Kila is now in ruins but whispers tales of splendors of the bygone era. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1921 have revealed several prehistoric objects in this ancient mound. The artefacts belong to three cultural periods, from the 4th Century BC to the 3rd Century AD.  First, 4th to 1st century BC: The significant antiquities recovered from this period include terracotta seals with depictions of spiritual symbols like crescent, swastika, snake, and ‘nandipada’. 

Second, 1st century BC to 3rd century AD: Accommodations built of baked bricks and mud, stamped pottery, artifacts made of terracotta, clay seals bearing Brahmi scripts and ‘Red Polished Ware’ represent this period.

Ancient Mound Amin

There is a very old Shiva temple in the village and there are remains of an old fort near the village. This fort sits at a higher level than the rest of the village. People say that this fort belonged to Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna in the Mahabharata times. Folklore also says that the Pandavas arrayed their forces before the last battle in the War of Mahabharat at Amin. There is mound here which marks the site of ‘Chakravyuha’ in which Abhimanyu lost his life.

The men of Amin from the Ror community belong to Chauhan gotra and in majority cases their average height is more than six feet. There is a local saying that the Indian Volleyball team always has at least one Ror from this village. A perfect example of this village’s contribution to Indian Volleyball is Arjuna Award winner Dalel Singh, who has also had the distinction of captaining the national team.
