Lagardère reinforces German presence with 10 openings at new Berlin Airport
By Andrew Pentol | Wednesday, 4 November 2020 10:32
The 10 Lagardère Travel Retail stores at the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport comprise three local brands including Look54.
Lagardère Travel Retail has opened 10 Travel Essentials stores on 1 November at the new Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg International Airport.
As reported , the airport finally opened on 31 November following a decade of setbacks.
According to Lagardère, the openings take place in a very challenging context, but mark a new step in the company’s German development. They also reinforce Lagardère’s commitment to the Travel Essentials segment.
Spread across an area of around 865sq m, the 10 stores are split between six different brands. These comprise international concepts such as Relay, Hub Convenience and Lego and local brands Look54, Ampelmann and Departure BER.
The stores will offer a wide range of products from food-to-go and convenience to souvenirs and toys.
CHALLENGING OPENING CONDITIONS
These openings take place under challenging circumstances due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the new mobility and travel restrictions being implemented in Germany.

Lagardère believes it will be some time before the airport and its newly revealed retail spaces deliver their full potential to passengers. In the meantime, hygiene and distancing measures have been enforced to ensure the highest possible level of safety and to protect staff and customers.
The openings will reinforce Lagardère Travel Retail’s position in Germany — the retailer is already present in 10 airports and 39 train stations with more than 120 stores. It operates two business lines (Travel Essentials and Foodservice) with a portfolio of well-known international and local brands such as Relay, Hub Convenience, Virgin, Coffee Fellows and Frankfurter Markthalle Foodcourt in Frankfurt Main Station.
Lagardère Travel Retail has opened an impressive Lego store in Berlin.
Jochen Halfmann, CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail Germany said: “We are thrilled to be able to take a next step in our development in Germany, in what remains a very challenging environment. The deterioration of the global sanitary situation, as well as the new preventive measures being enforced in the country meant the unveiling of our new stores wasn’t what we hoped for.
“We are confident, however, that the new Berlin Airport will be one of the three main German airports in the future, so we’re very pleased to be starting this journey with them.
“We are also further investing into the Travel Essentials segment because it has shown greater resilience during the crisis, by fulfilling the basic needs of travelers. Despite the difficult circumstances, we remain committed to delivering first-class support and service for our customers.”
The 10 Lagardère Travel Retail shops at the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport are split into six brands including Departure BER.
Of Lagardère Travel Retail’s three business lines, Travel Essentials demonstrate the greatest resilience and the fastest recovery rate.
This resilience relies on the operator’s multi-channel nature (major footprint in rail, shopping centres and airports) and a multi-category offer which has benefitted from other stores such as restaurants being closed during lockdowns.
Ampelmann is another local brand which has been given a prominent space in Berlin.
The crisis has been an opportunity to reveal the essential nature of the Travel Essentials stores. In 2019, Travel Essentials represented €2.2 billion/$2.6 billion (41%) of Lagardère Travel Retail’s total sales.
Lagardère Travel Retail has been operating in Germany since 1999. It started as a pure press and book retailer, but now has a wide portfolio in Travel Essentials and Foodservice.

Lagardère Travel Retail adds new Berlin airport to its German footprint
Lagardère Travel Retail is pleased to announce it has opened 10 Travel Essentials stores on 1st November at the new Willy-Brandt Berlin Brandenburg airport. The openings take place in a very challenging context but mark a new step into the company's development in Germany and reinforces its commitment to the resilient Travel Essentials segment.
With a total area of about 865 square meters, the 10 stores are split between six different brands, combining international concepts such as Relay, Hub Convenience and Lego as well as local brands: Look54, Ampelmann and departure BER. The stores will offer a wide range of products from food-to-go and convenience to souvenirs and toys. Lagardère Travel Retail unveils fresh concept for Relay stores
By Elena Dimama in Airports , Global , Latest News , Regions , Retail News , Travel essentials & convenience November 9, 2020 Comments Off on Lagardère Travel Retail unveils fresh concept for Relay stores
The new brand identity is “more customer-centric” and allows for “in-store flexibility”
Lagardère Travel Retail has revealed a new concept and brand identity for its Relay stores, which have shown the greatest resilience in the Covid-19 crisis, according to the company.
The new concept aims to enhance and simplify the shopping journey, featuring a new graphic identity and store design, while also being fully flexible to allow for quick adaptation of the store lay-out, merchandising and product offering.
Dedicated spaces to showcase local products are also part of the new concept in order to respond to customers’ demand for uniqueness and a sense of place.
The retailer is also introducing a new check-out experience.
The new Relay concept also features:
• New category universes, introduced to better highlight the product offering with flexible design and merchandising for each category that allows for categories to be switched to align to changing customer trends and passenger mix. • The Relay red storefront has been enhanced with a grey banner to introduce partner brands • Communication tools have also been integrated into to further support promotional offers and allow for product recommendation • Digital communications have been included into the concept through storefront digital animation and in-store screens
With “Travel made special”, the new Relay brand positioning aims to support the idea that for long-haul and daily commutes, the shops can offer travellers everything they need to upgrade their journeys.
Lagardère Travel Retail Chief Business Officer Lucio Rossetto said: “Relay is a well-known brand to travelers throughout the world, and for many it’s where the travel really starts. To maintain this emotional connection between Relay and its customers and better keep up with their needs, we needed to evolve both the concept and the brand identity.
“With the new Generation of Relay stores, we are further investing into a franchise, and a segment we believe in. Under the most challenging circumstance, Relay has demonstrated its great resilience and more importantly has managed to remain an important stop-over in passengers’ journeys.”
Travel Essentials has demonstrated the greatest resilience and the fastest recovery rate in this period of Covid-19 crisis, according to the retailer.
The resilience was attributed on the category’s multi-channel nature, with major footprint in rail, shopping centres and airports), along with a multi-category offer benefitting from other stores closed during lockdowns, such as restaurants.
“The crisis has been an opportunity to reveal the truly essential nature of Travel Essentials stores. In 2019, Travel Essentials represented €2.2 billion, 41% of Lagardère Travel Retail’s total sales,” the company added.
New-generation Relay stores have already opened in Madrid Atocha station, Nantes Atlantique airport and train station, Prague airport (7 stores) and Berlin’s new Brandensburg airport (4 stores). The new Relay concept will continue its global roll-out in 2020 and 2021, with new openings already planned in more than 7 countries across several regions (opening plan may vary depending on the sanitary context).

Lagardère Travel Retail invites Central Station passengers to Discover Berlin
GERMANY. Lagardère Travel Retail has opened a branch of its ‘Discover’ souvenir and gift store concept at Berlin Central Station.
The 90sq m shop is located on the station’s first floor. It is Lagardère Travel Retail’s seventh ‘Discover’ outlet and the third in Berlin, with more scheduled to be built. The product assortment and store layouts are tailored to the respective locations.
The retailer also operates Virgin, L’Occitane and two Relay units at Berlin Central Station.
“Today a fifth shop has been added,” said Lagardère Travel Retail Germany, Austria and Slovenia CEO Thomas Wiesel. “As a longtime and reliable partner we convinced Deutsche Bahn that our innovative souvenir and gift concept Discover Berlin is exactly the right match for a balanced retail portfolio at the main station.”
The Discover Berlin outlet features a number of themed areas with decorative elements showcasing famous Berlin landmarks, videos narrating the city’s history, and graffiti pictures in the style of those seen on the Berlin Wall.
The store will only stock products relating to the German capital, including classic souvenirs such as postcards and stickers along with a selection of clothing.
“We are very excited about this new high-frequented location,” said Lagardère Travel Retail Germany, Austria and Slovenia COO Travel Essentials Friederike Martens. “Here we get in touch with a large number of travellers and Berlin tourists, in order to interest them in our range of unusual and classic Berlin souvenirs.”
