Lake Lugano

Lake Lugano is at the southernmost tip of the Tessin, the holiday region south of the ridge of the Alps, and it reaches its arms out into Italy. Thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate, there are even citrus fruit trees growing here, and visitors can sunbathe under palm trees.

Description

The lake has a number of different branches and is surrounded by mountains: Monte Generoso  is the highest mountain by Lake Lugano, at about 1700 m. A rack railway takes you from the lakeside resort of Capolago to the top of the mountain, with its panoramic views. There are two funicular railways scaling Lugano’s mountains: the Monte San Salvatore  – from where a beautiful alpine footpath leads to the little village of Carona and on to Morcote – and the Monte Brè. And a cable-car takes you up to the sunny plateau of Serpiano, ideally located for visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Monte San Giorgio. The densely wooded mountain with its many rare plants is one of the main locations where fossils can be found dating from a prehistoric subtropical lake. Take a boat ride to discover the diversity of the region: Morcote, with its grand mansions and the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, an important Renaissance building with a late-Romanesque bell-tower offering outstanding views, or Gandria, a perfect example of a little fishing village by Lake Lugano. Round the lake, the numerous parks are tempting places to wander. Take, for example, the Parco Scherrer in Morcote, where sculpture and architecture from countless different countries and eras are combined with cedar trees, Mexican pines, camphor trees, eucalyptus, azaleas, palms, bamboo etc, or the Park Belvedere, right beside the lakeside promenade in Lugano . In the spring, visitors love to see the magnolias and camellias in full bloom in the parks. You can discover Swiss history and culture in the holiday paradise of Lake Lugano: the Swiss Customs Museum in Gandria, for example, shows how smugglers used to pursue their “trade” at great risk in this formerly poverty-stricken area, while the famous “ Swissminiature ” Park shows you the country’s main sights on a scale of 1:25. For literature fans, it’s worth a visit to the Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola where the writer spent half his life.

Travel Guide To Lake Lugano

Free travel guide to Lake Lugano Italy

Milan's recently expanded intercontinental airport hub, Malpensa, is within striking distance of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. But there is another less obvious itinerary: the route north into the delightfully languid province of Varese, then east towards Lake Lugano, which lies partly in Italy and partly in Switzerland. Historically, Varese was the Versailles or Windsor of Milan, and the era left behind some stunning villas, including Villa Panza, home to one of Italy's finest collections of contemporary art. Varese has many worthwhile sights, but the most unexpected and rewarding treat is the tiny Tuscan village of Castiglione Olona, in the lush Olona valley, a 30 minute drive from Malpensa airport.

Where to stay in Lake Lugano

ELVEZIA AL LAGO

Senterio di Gandria 21, Castagnola (00 41 91 971 4451; www.elvezialago.ch ). The most romantic of the lakeside retreats is this four-star hotel just east of Lugano. It can only be reached by foot or boat, but this is part of its charm. There are nine simple rooms (go for number nine or number five) and two more slightly more luxurious ones, reached via a private funicular lift. Competent but unexciting dishes such as polenta with porcini are served on the restaurant terrace; but it's the view, and the vibe, that counts here. £

LOCANDA DEI MAI INTEES

Via Nobile Claudio Riva, 2, Azzate (00 39 0332 456 223; www.mai-intees.com ). This is a converted Renaissance country house in Azzate, whose unpromising suburbs conceal a charming hilltop centro storico . In summer, guests can enjoy the lovely stone-flagged courtyard, out of season, the fireplace in the frescoed dining room is very inviting. Breakfast is less sumptuous than the décor. £

ROMANTIK HOTEL TICINO

Piazza Cioccaro 1, Lugano (00 41 91 227772; www.romantikhotels.com ). This charming 23-bedroom hotel in one of Lugano's medieval squares looks like a Swiss riad inside, with a tiny courtyard overlooked by loggias . The décor is floral, even frou-frou but it is all beautifully clean and well looked-after. Guests, too, are well cared for the multi lingual owners, Frau and Herr Buchmann. ££

Where to eat out in Lake Lugano

Viale Cassarate 3, Lugano (00 41 91 923 5511; www.ristorantealportone.ch ). This is Lugano's leading non-hotel restaurant, a discreet and cosseted space just east of the centre. It has no view or outside tables, but all the better to focus on Roberto and Silvio's refined Italo-Swiss cuisine: ravioli stuffed with cardoon (thistle artichoke) and served with grated truffle; duck crépinette served with its own foie gras in balsamic vinegar on a bed of lentils. Risottos are a strong point, as are the top Ticinese wines. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Via Marco da Campione 4, Campione d'Italia (00 41 91 649 7541; www.dacandida.ch ). Aside from the casino and the frescoes in Santa Maria dei Ghirli, the other reason to visit Campione d'Italia is to eat in the lush, antique penumbra of Bernard Fournier's 30-cover shrine to gastronomy. A dedication to foie gras betrays Fournier's Gallic origins, as do dishes such as onion soup and tournedos and an extensive cheese selection. But there's decent pasta too, and a good range of Swiss and Italian wines. If you are off to the casino afterwards, you'll see most of your fellow diners there too. Closed Mon and Tues lunch.

DA VENANZIO

Via Olona 38, Induno Olona (00 39 0332 200333; www.davenanzio.com ). The approach to this Varese restaurant is hardly encouraging, it's at the far end of an industrial estate dominated by a chocolate factory and a brewery. But this just makes the elegance of the provincial Art Deco villa, hardly changed since 1928, all the more enjoyable. It takes its wine and service seriously and, more importantly, the chefs really know how to cook. The green tortelli filled with ricotta and asparagus, served with butter and Parmesan, are almost perfect. Closed Monday.

IL VERDERAMO

Vicolo del Frate 1, Castello Cabiaglio (00 39 0332 435866). 'Circolo Familgliare' is written in faded print outside the main bar and restaurant of this mountain village north-east of Varese. The long room inside still has all the trappings of the village social club, with a bar at one end, fireplace at the other, and in between a few old guys knocking back a restorative grappa or two. But owner Luigi Secco is an excellent chef, his dishes based on the best produce available locally. The antipasto della casa either hot or cold, is an excellent, tapas-like introduction to this mountain cornucopia. Follow it with tagliatelle with asparagus and taleggio cheese or lamb chops slow-grilled on pietra ollare , a local oilstone. Closed Mon eve & Tues.

TRATTORIA DI TORBA

Via Cesare Battisti 2, Torba (00 39 0331 820180) is a great place to stop if you're visiting Castiglione Olona or the nearby monastery of Torba. The utterly simple and family-run trattoria does a knock-out primo piatti of ricotta and tomato cannelloni, and a series of solid, meaty secondi including tasty rabbit in an olive sauce. Closed Tues eve and Wed.

What to see in Lake Lugano

Halfway between Varese and Lake Lugano, Bisuschio is home to Villa Cicogna Mozzoni, an Italian stately home that is still lived in and cared for by a family that has owned it for centuries, and is also one of the few villas to have kept its Renaissance sunken garden, conceived in scale and layout as a green extension of the villa, like a summer living room.

CASTELLO CABIAGLIO IN CAMPO DEI FIORI MASSSIF

A pretty village seemingly untouched by time and tourism.

CASTIGLIONE OLONA

This tiny Tuscan village, situated in the lush Olona valley, about half an hour's drive from Malpensa, is lovely. Although it lies in Lombardy it feels more Sienese.

LAKE LUGANO AND LUGANO CITY

Lugano is complicated for tour operators to sell because it lies between two countries and has no obvious resorts. But the package operators' loss is the independent traveller's gain; as it is both peaceful and beautiful. Lugano city, the lake's main centre, attracts mostly short-hop tourists such as Germans and Swiss-Germans attracted by the winning combination of Italian lifestyle and Swiss efficiency. It is surrounded by mountains, most of which offer panoramic rides to the top and it is warm enough for palm trees and exotic plants to flourish. Lugano city is more about pavement cafes and contemporary art than banks and cuckoo clocks. The lakeside Museo d'Arte Moderna puts on some excellent temporary exhibitions such as the recent Jean-Michel Basquiat retrospective.

This little village at the southern tip of the mountain peninsula has restaurants and cafés clustered in the shade under medieval arcades, facing the wooded slopes of Monte Piambello on the Italian shore.

THE SACRO MONTE

One of the biggest tourist draws of the region, The Sacro Monte, or Holy Mountain, has 14 baroque chapels that line a wide, pebble-paved mountain track, containing sculptures representing the 'Mysteries of the Rosary'.

Historically, the province of Varese was the Versailles or Windsor of Milan, a verdant summer retreat from the city for wealthy families. Although villeggiatura is not what it was, the trend left behind some stunning villas including the elegant 18th-century Villa Panza in the city of Varese, home to one of Italy's finest collections of contemporary art. Its late owner, Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, began collecting US minimalist art in the early 1960s, and in 1996 bequeathed the villa and part of his collection to the Fondo Per L'Ambiente Italiano, Italy's equivalent of the National Trust.

Spilling over into northern Italy, Lago di Lugano is a sparkling blue expanse at Ticino's southernmost tip, with a real holiday flavour as soon as the weather warms. Less overrun than many of the lakes over the border, it is nevertheless bewitching, whether glimpsed from one of the many trails that wriggle along its shores, from a mountain peak or from the deck of the boats that glide across it.

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Lugano, Locarno & the Ticino Region

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers Updated Dec 26, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Lugano is not what you'd expect a Swiss town to look like. The architecture is Italian, and the lakeside parks and gardens give it the air of a subtropical vacation spot. Signs are in Italian, and the fragrances drifting from the restaurants you pass are redolent of the Mediterranean.

View over Lake Lugano

Welcome to the Ticino, Switzerland's southern canton where Italian is the official language, and the lifestyle is more Italian than Swiss. But you'll also find the Swiss love of hiking and outdoor sports is alive and well in the mountains surrounding Lake Lugano.

The lake is the glamorous centerpiece of the Ticino region, set beneath wooded mountainsides and bounded at one end by Lugano's waterfront promenades. Trails leading along the hillsides and into the mountains provide plenty of things to do for those who love nature and the outdoors. Boat trips and mountain tramways are great for sightseeing around Lake Lugano.

The Ticino is a great place to visit for those who love active travel, with endless opportunities for walking, hiking, cycling, climbing, or just riding to mountaintop vistas to enjoy the views. You can be sure to find all the best places to go with this list of the top attractions and things to do in Lugano, Locarno, and the Ticino Region.

Lake Lugano

Beautiful Lake Lugano is Ticino's star tourist attraction, and you can enjoy it in several different ways: tour on one of the white steamers (excursion boats have been plying the lake since 1848), rent a boat to sail on your own, or choose any of the dozens of mountain or shore viewpoints and gaze at it.

The steep wooded mountainsides that form much of its vertiginous shore give a wild, untouched appearance to all but a few valleys where rivers flow in from the mountains. The mountains not only give Lake Lugano a stunning backdrop from nearly every angle, but they provide some of Europe's finest viewpoints to admire it from.

Some favorite places to visit around the lake are best accessed by boat, a fine way to reach the traditional grottos or little informal restaurants along its shore. One of the other popular things to do here is combine a boat cruise with walking, taking a boat to Gandria, and walking back to Lugano along the Sentiero dell'Olivo .

Lugano's Lakeside Park

Spacious green parks border the lake at the northern end of Lugano, shaded by trees and brightened by flower gardens.

Surrounded by the venerable trees and subtropical plants of the Parco Municipale is the Palazzo dei Congressi convention center and the 1843 Villa Ciani . The gardens of roses, azaleas, magnolias, camellias, palms, and exotic shrubs were once the private park of the villa.

The long lakeside promenade follows the shore for the entire length of Lugano to the southernmost boat landing at Paradiso . In places, it widens to park dimensions with subtropical gardens and modern sculptures lining the walkway. Facing it are distinguished old buildings, including the 18th-century Palazzo Riva .

From every point on the promenade are postcard views of the lake, framed by the surrounding mountains.

Monte San Salvatore

Although its altitude is only 912 meters, the summit of Monte San Salvatore offers one of the most beautiful and panoramic vistas in the entire Alps. Below you can see Lake Lugano as it weaves its circuitous way among the steep, wooded slopes that enclose it. The red tile roofs of Lugano scatter across the town's hillsides, and other villages cluster around the shore.

Turn your back on the lake and town to find a sea of alpine peaks stretching to the horizon, crowned by Monta Rosa and the Valais Alps. You can climb Monte San Salvatore, but most tourists prefer the 10-minute ride on the red funicular from Lugano's lakeshore station of Paradiso.

At the upper station, you'll find a restaurant, a viewing terrace, and walking trails leading down to Carona, Melide, Morcote, and Figino. You can return to Lugano from any of these by rail, postal bus, or boat.

Santa Maria degli Angioli

The church of a former convent, Santa Maria degli Angioli faces the lake at the end of Lugano's most fashionable shopping street. Inside is one of Ticino's most impressive art treasures, a full wall covered by a single fresco, the early 16th-century masterpiece of Bernardino Luini depicting the Passion and Crucifixion.

The fresco measures 30 meters by 12 meters, and is filled with larger-than-life figures modeled after patrons and family members. On a side wall is Luino's Last Supper, moved here from the monastery that stood next door.

Address: Piazza Bernardino Luini 6, 6900 Lugano, Switzerland

Valle Verzasca

The 220-meter Verzasca Dam holds the distinction of being one of the highest in Europe, but to the world, it's known for James Bond's death-defying jump in the opening scene of GoldenEye . But the dam is a modern intrusion that has not spoiled one of the most beautiful of the Ticino's many river valleys.

As the river tumbles down its rocky course, its notoriously emerald green waters form waterfalls and swimming holes surrounded by ledges for sunbathing. It passes beneath stone bridges and through ancient alpine villages. The best known of both — and with a picturesque waterfall, too — is Lavertezzo .

Here, the Ponte dei Salti stone-arched bridge crosses the river, and from the village church, you can follow the Revöira walking trail along a well-marked route used over the centuries by villagers bringing their flocks and their families to the high mountain pastures for the summer. Along the way, you'll see remains of ancient water systems and reservoirs carved into the stones.

Learn about these semi-annual migrations, called transhumance, at the Museum of the Verzasca Valley in Sonogno , a quiet stone village at the end of the valley. A bus route from Lugano follows close to the river, with frequent stops, so you can get off and walk along the trails from village to village without doubling back.

View of Lake Lugano from the summit of Monte Bre

Monte Brè, whose distinctive cone rises at the north end of Lugano, can be reached by a narrow road, walking trails, or by a funicular to its 933-meter-high summit. Along with a scenic terrace, you'll find two restaurants. On the eastern slope is the village of Brè, a tiny settlement of traditional Ticino-style houses that's a favorite of artists.

You can follow an artists' trail, and the Wilhelm Schmid Museum displays works by the Swiss painter. Monte Brè is said to be Switzerland's sunniest spot, and it's also one of the most scenic, with views as far as the Valais Alps.

The Bellinzona Castles

Bellinzona's three castles are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites and are well worth exploring. Bellinzona was an important stronghold as the meeting point of three important north-south routes over the alpine passes of St. Gotthard, San Bernardino, and Lucomagno. All three could, in the past, be closed by a barrier across the road at Bellinzona, giving it a strategic position for centuries.

The three castles that still dominate the town are among the most important examples of medieval defensive architecture in the Alps. These, along with a double circuit of walls, were built or strengthened by Milanese rulers in the second half of the 15th century.

The oldest, Castelgrande , was constructed above the town center over a Roman castle. Castello di Montebello stretches along a hillside on the east side of Bellinzona and is the most interesting example of the art of fortification, built from the 13th to 15th centuries. The square-shaped Castello di Sasso Corbaro was built in less than six months in 1479 to reinforce the defenses of the valley after a battle.

Today, the castles house various museums covering history, art, archaeology, and local costumes. The old town is worth exploring as well, for its beautiful Italian-style townhouses and the magnificent wall paintings by 16th-century Lombard artists in the former Franciscan church Sta Maria delle Grazie .

Bellinzona Map - Tourist Attractions

Lugano's old town rises abruptly from the three squares that surround its Palazzo Civico (town hall), in a street that is a series of stairways and terraces. Beside it, a funicular climbs to the rail station high above.

A wide terrace opens out in front of the church of San Lorenzo , Lugano's cathedral. Originally Romanesque, it was enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries and altered extensively in the 17th and 18th centuries. But it retains the beautiful medieval frescoes in its otherwise mainly Baroque interior.

You can descend through the winding streets of the old town or follow stairways that connect parallel streets to make your way more directly to the lakefront. Lugano's main shopping streets are at the bottom of the hill, parallel to the lakefront.

Centovalli

One of Europe's most scenic train rides leaves from Locarno, following lofty tracks perched high above the Melezza River and its tributaries. Over millennia, the snow melting from the Alps has caused each of these rivers to carve a deep valley - reputedly 100 of them, hence the name centovalli.

Charming vintage rail cars go slowly enough to allow views down into these steep, wooded ravines as the train crosses 83 bridges on its way to Domodossola , the Italian town at the foot of the Simplon Pass .

Gandria and the Sentiero dell'Olivo

A promenade traces the shore through the terraced Parco degli Olivi at the far northern end of Lugano's promenade, turning into a wide walking path that hugs the slope of Monte Brè as it parallels the shore. View after view unfolds as the path passes through the narrow streets of lakeside villages and among the gardens between them, shaded by cypresses, pines, and olive trees.

Panels along the way explain the history and cultivation of olive trees. This Sentiero dell'Olivo, Olive Path, leads to the picturesque terraced village of Gandria. Among its steep, narrow lanes and arcaded alleys, you'll find the Church of Saint Vigilio , built in 1463, but with a Baroque facade completed only in the late 1800s.

The lake is quite narrow here, and directly opposite (you can take a boat across) is a grotto restaurant and the Swiss Customs Museum with exhibits about smuggling and illegal trade.

Madonna del Sasso

A funicular from Via Ramogna, just below Locarno's train station and toward Piazza Grande, leads up to the wooded crag from which the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso overlooks the lake. You can also climb to the church and its Capuchin friary on foot, by a path with Stations of the Cross, in 30 to 45 minutes.

Madonna del Sasso

Founded in 1480, the church was rebuilt in 1616 and redecorated ornately in the 19th century. The church's most outstanding artworks are Flight into Egypt , a major work by Bramantino in 1536, and Entombment by A. Ciseri from about 1865. The first is to the right of the entrance and the Ciseri is in the second side chapel. In the monastery museum is a collection of ecclesiastical art and manuscripts. Views over Lake Maggiore from the terrace are superb.

Address: Via Santuario 2, Orselina

Valle di Muggio

A unique open-air museum exploring traditional rural life spreads throughout the remote Muggio Valley hidden between Lakes Lugano and Como. Along with a large museum building packed with fascinating exhibits and artifacts, the Museo Etnografico Valle di Muggio encompasses a water-powered polenta mill, cheesemakers, an open-air village laundry, a chestnut drying shed, and other sights.

Begin in the village of Cabbio , where a large relief map shows the valley and locates things to see in the open-air museum, which stretches for miles and scatters throughout several towns.

Mulino di Bruzella , a stone mill powered by a water wheel, sits deep in a valley and is reached by a wide path through the forest - about a 30-minute walk from the road. The mill grinds rare, local red corn, a heritage crop revived through back-breeding and grown only in this region. You can watch the mill as it grinds, and buy the polenta here.

At farms throughout the valley, you can also buy local honey, chestnuts, and cheeses made from the milk of goats that graze in mountain pastures. This way of life, with one foot in the 21st century and one a century back, is a sharp contrast to the smart, chic lake resort towns just a few minutes away.

Address: Casa Cantoni, Cabbio

Historical building on the Brissago Islands

In Lake Maggiore , just off the picturesque village of Ronco, are the two small islands of Brissago. On the larger one is a botanic garden of Mediterranean flora, displaying about 1,500 species of exotic plants arranged by their geographical origins. Plants native to subtropical regions thrive outdoors in this latitude because of the warming effect of the lake.

The gardens were begun in 1885 by Baroness Antonietta Saint Leger, who not only collected the plants but cataloged them in detail. Her work was continued in the 1920s by a German businessman, who built the villa you see here today.

Along with exotic plants native to Asia, South Africa, and the Americas, the extensive gardens include a section devoted to local heritage vegetables, including the rare Ticino red polenta corn. You can get to the island by boat from Porto Ronco, just north of the Italian border.

Ascona

South of Locarno on Lake Maggiore , Ascona has developed from a little fishing village into one of Switzerland's most popular holiday resorts, with long hours of sunshine and a mild winter. Unfortunately, its popularity brought with it extensive modern development that has largely swallowed up the old village, but its harbor area is still an attractive blend of Italian and Swiss architecture with a few old buildings.

The 17th-century Casa Serodine, now known as Casa Borrani , has a sumptuous facade of Baroque stucco with a frieze of mythical creatures and biblical scenes, and the Collegio Pontificio Papio from 1584 has one of the finest Renaissance courtyards in Switzerland, with two-story loggias.

In the Dominican church of Santa Maria della Misericordia , built from 1399 to 1442, is a cycle of late Gothic frescoes. An art colony here attracted artists including Paul Klee, whose work you can see in the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna.

Ascona map - Tourist attractions

A new and exciting thing to do for tourists in the Ticino was added in 2021. The Swing the World initiative encourages visitors to view some of the region's most beautiful places from a rope swing. So far, these sturdy wooden seated swings have been placed in 16 especially scenic locations. Most are reached by public transport or a short walk, and some require a hike or bike ride, so there's a swing for every travel style.

Locations of these hand-crafted swings, which seat two people comfortably, include the mountain village of Rasa in Centovalli Valley (a five-minute cable car ride from the train stop), a beach at Vira Gambarogno with sunset views over Lake Maggiore, the Parco San Grato overlooking Lugano, and on the Piazza in lakeside Ascona. In the Bavona Valley, a swing hangs between two trees with a direct view onto the 110-meter Foroglio waterfall .

The best hotel locations in Lugano are close to the lake and the promenade along its shore. At one end is Paradiso, where the funicular starts for Monte San Salvatore, and at the other end is the Cassarate area, with the funicular up Monte Bre. About halfway between is the main shopping street, Via Nessa, and a warren of smaller streets climbing steeply to the cathedral and rail station. These highly rated hotels in Lugano are handy to sightseeing:

Luxury Hotels :

  • Facing the lake and promenade and a five-minute walk from the fashionable shopping street, Hotel Splendide Royal has lake views from its elegantly decorated rooms and the attention to detail expected from a Leading Hotels of the World member.
  • Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola is in a beautiful lakeside neighborhood, a short walk from Parco Civico, with a pool, tennis courts, and lake views.
  • Not as close to the lake and center as others, the Villa Principe Leopoldo is the epitome of luxury, with immense rooms and fine dining in a park setting high above the town. Parking is free, and so is the shuttle that takes you to the lakeside attractions.

Travelling to Lugano By Train From Zurich Airport

ticino scenery

Another popular option is to fly to Zurich and then continue the journey to Lugano by train. The distance between Lugano and Zurich is about 220 km (137 miles) and should take no longer than 2-3 hours. The journey will take you through some of Switzerland's most breathtaking scenery as it passes through Zug, Arth-Goldau, Gotthard and Bellinzona before arriving in Lugano. The train then continues on to Lake Como before terminating in Milan. Trains bound for Lugano from Zurich are fast, efficient and for most of the time depart almost hourly.

Compared to flying the train journey is worth the extra time it takes as you do get to see some beautiful scenery as you rattle through the Ticino countryside.

Travelling by rail in Switzerland is always a pleasant experience and similar to other modes of public transport it is considered one of the finest in the world. Swiss trains, buses, funiculars, lake steamers and cable cars are clean, efficient and always on time. On the whole the entire public transport system meshes seamleassly together to create one well-oiled machine.

  • Autostrada A9 in the direction of Como-San Gottardo and take the exit that is signposted "Lugano SUD"
  • Autobahn A2 in the direction of St.Gotthard-Chiasso-Italy and take the exit that is signposted "Lugano NORD"

Lugano is a lakeside city in Ticino , the Italian-speaking part of southern Switzerland , and is the largest Italian-speaking city in Switzerland, or for that matter, outside Italy. Part of a temperate micro-climate, Lugano offers palm trees, picturesque boulevards, stunning views of the lake and the Alps, and plenty of opportunity for outdoor and indoor activities. Lugano also makes a good base for visiting other cities and sites in the area. The city is a pleasant place to relax in the summertime and is only half an hour away from Lake Como .

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Milan Malpensa airport is 1 hour away by shuttle (see the "By bus" section below) or 1 hr 40 min by train (see the "By train" section below) and is an EasyJet hub.

By train [ edit ]

Lugano station is on the Gotthard railway, which crosses the alps connecting the cantons of Schwyz and Uri to Cantone Ticino. It primarily serves:

  • FFS (SBB in German, CFF in French, the national railway operator) and EC. Long distance trains to International destinations and other parts of Switzerland.
  • TILO (Joint operation between FFS and Italy's Trenord) which provides regional services, primarily to Lombardy. Direct service to Milano-Malpensa airport ~1 hr 40 min.
  • FLP (metre-gauge) local services

FFS/EC Trains leave for Zürich (3 hr), Basel (3 hr 34 min) and Milan (40 min-1 hr) as well as Geneva (via Zürich or Locarno-Domodossola: 5 hr 30 min with one or two transfers, 6 hr 30 min via Milan with one transfer). Getting to Geneva or points west it is faster to go via Zürich or Locarno as the trains are more frequent and faster.

  • 46.005499 8.946835 1 Stazione di Lugano ( Lugano railway station ), ☏ +41 900 300 300 . ( updated Aug 2015 )

Since 2019, there has been a direct airport service from Lugano to Milano-Malpensa provided by TILO. It is slower (1 hr 40 min) than the bus shuttles (just over an hour) but provides more regular service. Approx Fr. 23 ( Swiss francs ) as of 2019. Tickets are referred to as "Transfrontaliero" on Trenord machines and "Internazionale" on SBB machines.

By bus [ edit ]

There are three shuttle services between Lugano and Milan Malpensa Airport . Each takes about 1 hr 10 min to get in from Malpensa:

  • Lugano Services (approx every 2 hr, 04:00–23:30; 1 hr 10 min; €25 one way; advance reservations on line or tickets directly on the bus)
  • JetBus (approx every 1-2 hr; 06:00–23:10; €27 or Fr. 35 one way; can be booked at airport)
  • Malpensa Express (every 2 hr; 08:35–23:35; €30 or Fr. 35 one way; can be booked at airport.)

There is also a daily bus service during summer to Tirano , Italy with train connection ( Bernina Express [dead link] ) to St. Moritz (Switzerland).

By car [ edit ]

Due to physical geography, Lugano has good North-South oriented links and non-existent East-West ones.

Lugano is on the A2 motorway (just "2" on a red background on Swiss road signs) which spans the width of the country from Basel on the French/German borders to Chiasso on the Italian. This is part of the European Route E35 from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Rome, Italy. Like most Swiss roads, the condition is usually very good and speeds are good, nevertheless distance makes journey times relatively long, particularly when travelling from the north of the country. Lugano is about 3 hr from Berne or Zürich, in optimal conditions. This route passes through the San Gottardo tunnel, which is a bit of a bottleneck on Sundays (northbound) and Friday (southbound), so budget some time for traffic jams. Jams can be up to 3 hours long during peak travel times such as Easter.

Coming from the south, you have more choices on the flat Po plain but the main route is the A9 motorway from near Milano to Chiasso (where it becomes the Swiss A2). This motorway is fast and relatively uncongested, and the Italians have a somewhat more carefree driving style than the Swiss. Speed limits change when crossing into Switzerland. Lugano is about 1 hr 30 min from Milano and 1h10 from Malpensa airport, in optimal conditions. Travelling on the A9 does incur one toll near Como, around €2.20 as of 2016.

Crossing customs is usually a pain-free exercise. Switzerland is part of Schengen, so they're not interested in your passport (if you're obviously European) but they are not part of the EU and may be interested if you're carrying anything you need to declare; make sure you know the duty-free limits .

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Lugano is small enough to get around on foot , and many of the streets are pedestrian-only, but the hills above the lakefront are very steep so the bus or the funicular from the centre of town might be a better option on the way up to the train station if you have a lot of bags. Taxis can be found on the main roads. Ferries and funiculars (Brè and San Salvatore) are great options for seeing the views.

Drink [ edit ]

In the summer your best bet is just to wander along the lakeside promenade and open air bar/cafes. Check local listings for clubs and shows as venues come and go with the seasons. Spring-Autumn, Bar Mojito (p.za Manzoni, directly at the lakeside)

There are clubs in the city (discos). Nix (under the Casinò), Privilege (near Manor, a department store), Tito's Place (quartiere Maghetti), Club One and The Cube are all located in the downtown.

Oops (via Maderno 24) and Bibliocafè Tra (Salita dei Frati, Piazza Molino Nuovo) are a great place to have beer in the evening. Near University [1] [dead link] . Another hint:

  • Arte , Lungolago . Amazing decor, (also an art gallery), great food and views of the Lake!

Connect [ edit ]

There are a few internet cafes in town. As usual, try near the train station. Free Wi-Fi connection can be found along the lakeside and in the University campus (Via Buffi, 13).

Stay safe [ edit ]

Lugano is as safe as most cities in Switzerland, but the density of expensive purses, watches, and sunglasses may make pickpockets more of a problem. The usual cautions apply to walking alone late at night, especially after bars and clubs close before dawn.

Lake Lugano is the real draw to Italy's glitzy lake district

Stretching across Italy and Switzerland, lesser-known Lake Lugano is the one to visit on your next trip to Europe

lake lugano

On the banks of the lake is Lugano, the small but perfectly formed main city in Switzerland 's Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Thanks to its glamorous waterfront setting, ritzy casinos and loyal celebrity following – George Clooney is often spotted riding his Harley around Lugano – it's known as the Monte Carlo of Switzerland.

Sandwiched between the two, Lugano is less than hour from both Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, making it the perfect day trip (or longer) on your next Italian lakes holiday .

One of Lugano's main claims to fame is that it hosted the first ever Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956. Inspired by the Italian Sanremo Festival, the inspiring new pan-European song competition was hosted in Lugano primarily as a radio show – although there were some cameras there to capture the event for those with TVs. Just seven countries took part, and Switzerland's Lys Assia, won with the song Refrain .

A seamless blend of Swiss efficiency and Italian charm, Lugano feels quite unlike anywhere else in Europe. Its narrow, cobbled streets and pastel-hued neoclassical mansions, artisan chocolatiers and expensive watch shops all scream Switzerland, while the upmarket wine bars, stylish restaurants and elegant 19th-century coffee houses which spill out onto Piazza della Riforma, the town's main square, all bring a fashionable Italian vibe.

What to do in Lake Lugano

Visit the museums.

Despite its compact size, Lugano is certainly not short of culture. At its heart is the Lugano Arte e Cultura Center, a stark, modernist building on the waterfront which reminds us of a giant cuboid shark. Housing the Museo d'arte della Svizzera Italian (MASI), one of the most popular art museums in Switzerland, it features a wealth of Ticino art from the 19th century until today. Overlooking the lake, the modern cultural centre also has a thousand-seat concert hall which hosts classical and contemporary concerts and shows.

Take in the best views of the Alps

Lugano's also famous for its funiculars. One of three in the city, the cherry-red funicular trundles between the business district and the city's Old Town as efficiently as a cuckoo clock. For the best views across the Alps and the lake, take one of the two mountain funiculars which climb up to the summits of Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore.

See the sights by water

Of course, the best way to really experience the beauty of Lake Lugano is from the water. You'll feel as glamorous as Amal Clooney as you hop on the polished teak cruiser and buzz around the lake to the tiny hamlet of Caprino for lunch. Lake Lugano is dotted with tiny grottoes – the tiny lakeside taverns, usually built around caves and shaded by trees.

Grotto San Rocco is one of the best. Sit on a red-checked table overlooking the lake, and the charming chef-proprietor, Michel will serve you dish upon dish of local treats like polenta and gorgonzola, barbecued lake fish and strozzapreti, the 'strangled priest' pasta with Ticino sausage and red wine.

Visit Bellinzona's 13th-century castles

One of Switzerland's key Unesco World Heritage sites, Bellinzona's trio of 13th-century castles is a must-visit on any Lake Lugano holiday . A short hop on the train from Lugano, it's easy to wander between Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro Castles and explore their ramparts, towers and lawned gardens. Do try the area’s famous Ticinella salami, which is cured in the cool cellars of Montebello Castle.

Go for a hike

If you're staying on the southern shores of Lake Lugano, you can take the century-old mountain railway from Capolago up to Monte Generoso for an afternoon of hiking. After lunch, take the Panorama Trail, a circular loop which lines the ridge for incredible views over the range. And, don't miss a peek into Grotto dell'Orso, the excavated remains of an ancient bears' cave.

lake lugano

People watch in the Old Town

The real beauty of a holiday to Lugano is that it's easy to do very little and just enjoy the vibe. At its heart is Piazza della Riforma, the city's neoclassical main square lined with dusky pastel mansions and pavement cafes, making it the perfect spot to sit with an espresso or a spritz and watch the world whirl by.

How to reach Lake Lugano

You can reach Lake Lugano by flying into Milan Malpensa Airport, where it's little over an hour's drive to the lakeside city. You can also fly into Zurich and transfer to Lugano by a scenic train ride through the Swiss Alps. Opened in 2016, the Gotthard Base Tunnel cores 35 miles through the Alps making it the longest railway tunnel in the world. It shaves almost 60 minutes off the journey between Zurich and Lugano making the lakes easily accessible in under two hours.

You can visit Lake Lugano as part of a seven-night no-fly trip to the Italian lakes in 2024. For more information, visit our holiday website and see all the details in our exclusive Good Housekeeping tour.

Lake Lugano

Lake Lugano

Lake Lugano is shared by Switzerland and Italy and the area around the glacier lake is infused with a mix of Swiss sophistication and Italian passion. Located between Lakes Maggiore and Como, Lugano was first mentioned by Gregory of Tours in 590 AD, who referred to the body of water as Ceresio. It is thought that the original name came from the many cherry trees that once dotted the shores of the lake. In 804 the lake was renamed as Luanasco. Today you can enjoy outdoor sports, beautiful villages, gorgeous views, festivals and delicious food in the Lugano area, which draws tons of tourists every year to its shores.

The majority of Lake Lugano is held by Switzerland, in an area where the lake comprises one of that country’s most popular tourist attractions. The Italian water and the Campione d’Italia enclave are considered non-territorial and therefore enjoy duty free  status and are exempt from the EU VAT tax. The residents of the area also enjoy several other attractive tax advantages.

lake lugano

HISTORY OF LAKE LUGANO

Lake Lugano and the surrounding area had always been an area of strategic and military importance. The first account of a political body governing the area dates back to 818 AD. In 1000 AD the lake was under the control of the Bishop of Como and was the site of the war between Milan and Como, which was fought between 1218 and 1227 for control of the Alpine traffic in the area. Later the lake and shoreline were incorporated into the Duchy of Milan and were again a subject of territorial and political contention in the 15 th century. In 1752 the Treaty of Varese fixed the border between Italy and Switzerland and since then it has remained unchanged.

FISHING AT LUGANO LAKE

Lake Lugano is chalk full of fish and except for a few protected areas–like the River Cuccio’s mouth in Porlezza–fishing is allowed. Protected species in the lake include the white clawed crayfish and the bleak, which is almost extinct in the area. Brook trout were introduced to the lake in 1895 from Lake Zug and the common whitefish were introduced around 1894. Over the years attempts have been made to introduce several other species in the water of the lake. It had taken around ten years to colonize the lake since common roach were present in the area in large numbers. Other creatures that can be found in the area include burbot, zander, largemouth bass, European perch and even wels catfish in small numbers.

POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN LUGANO

A small town located on the eastern shore of the lake, Porlezza has a pleasant climate and gorgeous verdant foliage growing on top of its mountains. In the winter months the trees and flora in the area are quite beautiful. There is easy access from Porlezza to several mountain trails and there are plenty of opportunities for walking, hiking and other outdoor activities in the region.

The town is typically medieval and has several beautiful monuments and ancient churches you can visit. The most important places to visit in the town are Saint Maria dei Miracoli and Saint Maurizio Church.

Porlezza has several cozy hotels and good restaurants. You can also enjoy peaceful walks in the lanes along the shore of the lake and charming shops where you can buy locally made products. Though Porlezza is not a very large town, it offers good opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities, which is why it is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.

Lake Lugano

Brusimpiano

Another charming town along the shores of the lake is Brusimpiano, which is located on the border from Switzerland, about 15km from the the town of Varese and 60km from Milano. The town is spread over a very small area of just 5.9 square kilometers and has a small population of around 1,121 people. Though the town is quite small it provides beautiful views of the mountains and the lake and is a perfect place to kick back and enjoy life at a slower pace.

Lavena Ponte Tresa

Also located in the province of Varese, quite close to Brusimpiano, is Lavena Ponte Tresa. Another small town along Lugano this one is preferred by tourists who are looking for relaxation and natural beauty, which Lavena Ponte Tresa has in spades.

Campione d’Italia

You will find the enclave of Campione d’Italia along the Swiss Canton of Ticino , in the Province of Como. The town is separated from the other nearby parts of Italy by mountains and Lake Lugano. The hilly terrain makes it necessary to journey through roads to get from the town to other parts of Italy.

The nearest town in Italy to Campione d’Italia is Lanzo d’Intelvi, which is about 28km away. This naturally beautiful area was first settled in the 1st century BC by the Romans who named the town Campilonum and set it up to protect themselves from Helvetti invasions.

Estela, thanks for such a helpful comment. Paolo

Very interesting! Nice presentation about a region of Italy better known by Italian tourists. Lugano then, was already important in antiquity and medieval times. Must have been a region of great commerce and international trade for the Milanese to fight with the Bishop of Como for its control. I already am making plans to visit medieval Porlezza and other beautiful towns in the area. Good to know that Campione d’Italia is a powerful enclave: the third most important banking, commercial center for the Swiss. The region must be lovely year round but after five winters in Boston and fifteen in Chicago I had enough of snow and ice. I will visit Lugano in the summer. Thank you for the information and the photographs

Lake Lugano Vs. Lake Como: Which Lake Is Best?

lake lugano vs lake como

Southern Switzerland is home to truly spectacular nature, which includes everything from impressively tall mountains to stunning lakes. Lake Lugano and Lake Como are two gorgeous lakes easily accessible by trains from Switzerland and Italy. One lies entirely in Italy, while the other stretches throughout both countries.

If you’re not sure which lake to visit during your trip, this detailed guide will help. From ease of access and transportation to landmarks and attractions – here’s everything you need to know about Lake Lugano and Lake Como!

Table of Contents

General Information

Location & transportation.

switzerland train

Getting to either of these two lakes is fairly easy from both Switzerland and Italy. They’re both in the same region less than an hour away from each other; Lake Como is entirely in northern Italy, while Lake Lugano stretches through southern Switzerland and northern Italy. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to either lake.

How to Get to Lake Lugano

gotthard train eurail

Lake Lugano is situated in southern Switzerland and northern Italy. It’s easily accessible by trains from many cities in either country, and you can even ride a panoramic train to the lake on the Swiss side. Gotthard Panorama Express is the best way of traveling from Lucerne as it includes a lake cruise and then a scenic train ride from Fluelen to Lugano.

Panoramic trains are expensive, and you’ll want to stick to regional trains for cheaper tickets. Direct trains to Lugano depart from Zurich, Basel, Lucerne, Zug

In terms of flights, it’s best to fly to Zurich or Milan. Milan airports are the closest to Lugano, and you can be at the lake shore in under 2 hours from the airport. It takes a little more time from Zurich, but direct trains are available from the airport.

Pro Tip: If you’re departing from Italy, buy tickets at the machines or kiosks at the train station. They’re cheaper than if you buy them online, and you can board any train heading to your destination. You will need to validate the ticket at the train station before boarding the train – look for small yellow boxes mounted on the walls.

How to Get to Lake Como

lake lugano travel

Lake Como is accessible from both Switzerland and Italy. The last time I visited, we went to Milan from Como and managed to catch an SBB train that departed from Zurich. Most direct trains from Swiss cities stop at the town of Como. From there, you can catch a train to one of the other towns on the lakeshore.

In terms of flights, the closest airports to Lake Como are all in Italy. Milan Bergamo, Milan Malpensa, and Linate Airport all service the city of Milan and its surroundings, and are the closest you can get to Lake Como by plane.

Landscape and Views

Lake Como

Lake Lugano and Lake Como both offer a similar experience in terms of natural landmarks and landscape views. Both lakes have several bends and arms and are surrounded by hills and mountains. And you can ride a funicular to the top of a nearby summit for panoramic views at both Como and Lugano.

Both lakes also offer historic towns and villages, although I must admit that Lake Como is the better destination for historic landmarks. It’s got more towns along its shore, which generally have more to offer than those along the shore of Lake Lugano.

On the other hand, Lake Lugano offers easier access to the nearby mountains and their hiking trails. If you’re most interested in exploring the outdoors and admiring the views from the tall summits, Lake Lugano is somewhat better. But if you want to enjoy the pretty views while lounging on the beach and walking around old towns with cobblestone alleys in the evening, Lake Como won’t disappoint.

Things to Do Around Lake Lugano

Lugano

Lake Lugano’s attractions range from art museums to natural landmarks. With vast public parks, sandy beaches, historic attractions, and tall mountains, being bored at Lake Lugano isn’t an option.

Enjoy a delightful Lugano boat cruise

Lake Lugano boat cruise

Lake Lugano is three times smaller than Lake Como, which just means that it’s easier and quicker to explore it during a cruise. Ferry rides are the cheapest option for boat rides on the lake, and allow you to travel from Lugano to other wonderful towns on the shore. Gandria is a place worth checking out, known for the interesting Swiss Customs Museum that can only be accessed by boat.

Alternatively, you can arrange a private cruise on the lake that will take you where you want. Just keep in mind that it’s significantly more expensive than ferry tickets, but also offers much more freedom. Boat rental is also available, and it’s the best option if you want to explore the lake at your own pace, stopping whenever you feel like it.

Explore the City of Lugano

lake lugano travel

Lugano is the largest city on the lake shore and the best destination for anyone visiting the lake. With excellent restaurants, historic landmarks, and easily accessible hiking trails, the city is perfect for a short stay in Switzerland.

Lugano also has quite a few great art museums and galleries. Also, I really like that Lugano is rarely crowded, and you can usually enjoy walking around the town and visiting attractions without bumping elbows with tourists, which can’t be said for Bellagio or Como.

See the amazing views from Monte Brè

lake lugano travel

Of course, the lovely Swiss lake offers easy access to a nearby mountain. Head to Cassarate station to get on the funicular that will take you all the way to the top of the mountain. The ride is quite scenic and as you climb up the mountain, the landscapes change before your eyes.

At the top station of the funicular are restaurants, hiking trails, and observation decks. The hiking trails are mostly easy since Monte Bre isn’t really that big or tall, but that doesn’t make the vista from the top any less stunning. For the absolute best experience, come here on clear sunny days to enjoy uninterrupted views of Lake Lugano and all the towering mountains that surround it.

Take a leisurely walk at Parco Ciani

Parco Ciani

Parco Ciani is a sprawling public park in Lugano with pretty lake views. Featuring a villa, playground, museum, beach, and landscaped walking paths, the park offers plenty of ways to stay busy.

There’s also a small church on the park grounds as well as the local high school. Come here to relax for an afternoon, enjoying the lovely views from the shade under the trees. Don’t forget to pack a picnic basket, preferably full of delicious Swiss cheese!

Visit the SwissMiniatur Park

lake lugano travel

Swissminiatur Park is in Melide, just 7 minutes from Lugano by train. The park features miniature replicas of the most famous landmarks in the country (and wider), offering a speed tour of the best of Switzerland. Come here to see miniature versions of the country’s most famous churches, castles, buildings, and even town squares.

A miniature version of the Milano Cathedral is also at the park, so it’s not just Swiss landmarks. The park is a great introduction to the most famous sights in Switzerland, especially if you haven’t traveled the country extensively and seen everything in person. It’s even possible to go around the park on a sightseeing train, which is especially fun for children.

Things to Do Around Lake Como

lake lugano travel

The vast Lake Como offers a wide variety of things to do on its shores. From the cobblestone streets of Bellagio to the beaches of La Punta , you could stay in the area for a week and you would not be bored.

Admire the beauty of Villa Del Balbianello

lake lugano travel

Villa del Balbianello is a waterfront property open for tours. Parts of it date back to the 13th century and are remnants of a Franciscan monastery that once existed on the same grounds. The majority of the villa was constructed later, and the building was extensively renovated before it opened to the public.

The fabulous villa is best known for its terraced gardens, which offer impressive views of Lake Como. The gardens are accessible to anyone who purchases a ticket, but the interior of the village is reserved for guided tours, which are available only with the more expensive tickets.

Take a fun boat tour

Lake Como boats

Lake Como is best experienced on a boat. No matter which town you visit on the shore, you’ll only see a small section of the lake. But get on a boat and you can do a proper tour of the lake and visit several towns on the shore.

Ferries run on Lake Como and they’re the cheapest option for a fun boat ride. Go from Bellagio to Varenna or Menaggio to explore even more historic sights. Private boat tours of the lake are also available but are significantly more expensive. You can even rent a boat for a few hours and ride around the lake on your own – a great idea for some fun swimming away from the crowds on hot summer days.

Explore the charming town of Bellagio

Bellagio Lake Como

Bellagio is a lovely town on the shore of Lake Como. Featuring a historic center with narrow alleys, beautiful beaches, and a sprawling park with a hilltop castle, it’s an excellent destination for a relaxed vacation in Italy.

This is a great town whether you’re more interested in a resort vacation or water and outdoor adventures. Bellagio has something to offer to everyone, and it’s easily accessible by train from Como.

Indulge in wine-tasting

lake lugano travel

Italian wines are legendary and Lake Como is as good a destination as any for wine tastings. Most wineries are on the lake’s northern shore, which isn’t quite as popular with tourists. But this is a good thing because you can easily secure spots on wine tastings, and enjoy your time at Lake Como without crowds.

Cantina & Bottega is an excellent little place where you can enjoy dinner and taste the best local wines. Tastings are arranged upon request, and if you pop in without making any arrangements, you can enjoy a nice dinner and a glass or two of delicious local wine. Cantine Angelinetta in Domaso is one of the best local vineyards open for tours.

Enjoy the beautiful beaches of Lake Como

lake lugano travel

Lake Como has many beautiful beaches that are ideal for easy-going summer vacations. Spend a day lounging on the beach and swimming in the lake, taking in the beautiful sights and achieving a state of total relaxation.

Beaches are available in most towns on the lake shore, from Como to Gera Lario. Most are pebble or grass beaches, with plenty of shade to protect you from the harsh summer sun. There are even dog-friendly beaches on the lake shore, where your furry friends can run around and swim as much as they want. If you’re looking for a sandy beach, head to La Punta.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Lake Lugano and Lake Como are both in the same geographical region so have a very similar climate. Lake Como is generally a bit warmer and better suited for swimming because Lake Lugano is a glacial lake. Its waters are colder, and the period when you can comfortably swim in the lake is much shorter.

Best Time to Visit Lake Lugano

Lake Lugano

July to September is the best season for trips to Lake Lugano. It’s not a crazy popular destination so the crowds aren’t too big even during peak season. Summer is the best season for trips to Lugano because it’s warm and sunny, but the humidity is low.

Also, Lugano is the busiest destination on the lake shore. If you’re worried about crowds, just stay in one of the smaller towns and travel to Lugano for sightseeing. Spring is also a good season to visit the lake and explore the region when it’s not crowded, but it’s not warm enough for swimming or sunbathing.

Best Time to Visit Lake Como

lake lugano travel

Lake Como is best enjoyed in late spring (April-May) and early fall (September-October). The lake is very popular in the summer, which often translates to large crowds, especially in Como and Bellagio. If you want to visit Lake Como in the summer, I highly recommend staying at one of the towns on the northern lake shore to avoid hordes of tourists.

It’s worth noting that the weather is warm enough for swimming and sunbathing even in the off-season. I was in Como once in late October and saw plenty of people walking around in their swimsuits and jumping in the lake.

Reasons to Visit Lake Lugano over Lake Como

Lugano Switzerland

One reason why you might enjoy a visit to Lake Lugano more than one to Lake Como is simply because it’s in Switzerland. It’s an Italian-speaking town and you can still find many restaurants that serve only Italian cuisine, but the city is still Swiss throughout. Which means it’s clean, organized, and very expensive.

Also, plenty of restaurants in Lugano serve Swiss food, so it’s by far the better destination if you want to try some local delicacies. Italian food is available at both Lake Como and Lake Lugano, but Swiss staples can be found only in restaurants along the shore of Lake Lugano.

Other reasons to prioritize visiting Lake Lugano over Lake Como are:

  • Swissminiatur theme park
  • Access to nearby mountains
  • Art museums in Lugano
  • Easy train access to other Swiss cities and towns
  • Panoramic train rides from Lugano

Reasons to Visit Lake Como over Lake Lugano

lake lugano travel

Visiting Lake Como is cheaper than visiting Lake Lugano, especially if you want to stay in the area for a few nights. Tickets to attractions in the areas are cheaper and traveling to the lake costs less money, making Lake Como the better destination for travelers on a somewhat tighter budget.

Also, it’s the bigger lake and it has more to offer. In my experience, the towns on the shore of Lake Como are prettier and more historic. Sure, Lugano is a wonderful place, but it’s not that lively or packed with attractions. Como and Bellagio, on the other hand, are two wonderful destinations that offer loads of things to do, from local museums to observation decks atop a mountain. Travel to Lake Como for:

  • Charming old towns with cobblestone alleys
  • Delicious Italian food and wine
  • Historic villas
  • Easy (and cheap) travel to cities in northern Italy – Milan, Bergamo, Varese, etc.
  • Adventure parks
  • Resort hotels
