The problem with the safari is that it has an open window around the cartridge. I think somebody on FPN modded one by making little windows for it some nonsense, but It really isn't worth the trouble. Better bet is to convert a Platinum Preppy. They are 3 bucks, and all you need is a 10 cent O ring.

Stick with the converter. Carry extra ink with you or something. Eyedroppers cause more trouble than they're worth with their ink blops and blurps all the time.

  • Thread starter

Oh. I did not know they had issues. If they cause problems, then it is better to carry the ink around. I just did a round-trip flight with my Safari, no problems at all on the plane. I'll leave it alone.

Given the price of the Safari, it wouldn't be worth trying to rig something up - and yes, you can drain the converter quickly if you have a broader nib. What you might consider if you find that you run out of ink during the day (assuming you're starting with a full converter) is get one of the small plastic vials that Goulet sells - would make a perfect portable ink supply.

The Preppy's nib is much more flexible [for lack of a better term (springy?)] than the Safari's nib, so that's something to consider. I get a ton of mileage out of my eyedropper Preppy and only had one "burp" issue when the ink was very low. I imagine giving the Preppy several "breaks" where you simply set the pen down and don't touch it would alleviate that problem (if that's at all possible). For me, it is much more convenient to write with the Preppy than the Safari because of its enormous ink capacity. Just my $.02 and YMMV as always. A large bottle of Noodler's Heart of Darkness comes with a free eyedropper converted Preppy, so if you're looking for a new black you can kill two birds with $14 + S&H.

  • You can use another glue/epoxy if you have some. I like this one because it has a long, thin needle applicator which fits perfectly into the back of the barrel to fill those holes.

  • Test with water if you're unsure.
  • Use grease on threads to stop leakage.
  • Don't throw them around or be rough - this can cause ink to burp.
  • Keep them full - this helps prevent your hand warming up the air inside the barrel, causing it to expand, which pushes the ink through the feed at a rate you don't want.
  • Give one to your best friend because your best friend is probably a fountain pen lover as well. That's why they're your best friend.

Basic Maintenance Of Lamy Safari

By TonyZheng1997 November 18, 2013 in Lamy

Dipped Only

TonyZheng1997

Before getting my first Lamy Safari, I would like to learn how to take care of it. After looking at some posts about maintenance of Lamy Safari, I have some questions.

First, is a syringe necessary? If yes, how should I use it?

Second, if I disassembling a pen for too many time, would that hurt my pen?

Third, is there part of the pen that cannot be cleaned with water?

Fourth, what kind of material should I use to wipe my pen? Would tissues be bad for my pen?

I can answer the first question: since you can't change the Safari to an eyedropper because of the holes in the barrel, you don't need a syringe. You would need it if you'd like to refill cartridges with fresh ink, but that has got nothing to do with the Safari.

Iris My avatar is a painting by Ilya Mashkov (1881-1944): Self-Portrait; 1911, which I photographed in the New Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Could you tell me what is an eyedropper?

Antique

Are you thinking of a bulb syringe to flush out the feed?

I don't usually bother, you can flush the pen with the converter. It does take a bit longer.

I don't generally take my pens apart to clean them unless they are obviously clogged.

An eyedropper pen is one where you fill the whole barrel with ink using an eyedropper , obviously you can only do this if the barrel is air/water tight.

How should I flush the feed with a converter? Do I simply dip the nib into water and rotate the converter to make the water come through the feed into the converter?

Water is the main cleaning fluid. Sometimes a tiny bit of washing up liquid in the water can help.

For clogged pens - pen flush, diluted household ammonia 1:10 with water or diluted vinegar 1:10 (if iron gall ink has been used). But all of this is getting complex.

Stick with water!!

Sure, especially for a newbie like me, simple is the best.

Hi, Yes, you can use water to clean all parts of a pen, but don't get any water in the ink, it will dilute it.

First unscrew the barrel and take out the ink cartridge, put aside for later.

You really don't need to take the nib section apart, but to clean it, all that is needed is to fill a plastic or glass cup with water, put the whole nib and finger grip section into the water and leave it for a few hours, or overnight if you can wait. (photo)

Then take the pen out of the water, give it a good shake to get most of the water off, be sure there is no water down where the cartridge plugs in. Stand the pen with the nib on a paper towel for about 30 minutes.

When it all seems to be be dry, plug the cartridge back in, thread the barrel back on and write.

You can use paper towels, or the microfibre cloths are very good too. The barrels are designed to be removed, you can't wear the thread out. Better not to use any chemicals or bleach for cleaning, water is best for use with pens.

My cleaning regime for cleaning for a lamy safari id as follows:

Old Safari Cart with the top cut off

Bulb Syringe

Normal Syringe.

I fit the old safari cart to the pen, and flush with the bulb syringe (once is usually enough)

Fill the normal syringe and stick it into the convert and flush it through (again once is enough)

attach the convert to the pen and flush through twice to make sure it is clean.

leave it on a paper towel to drain out the remaining water and that there is no ink in it.

Doesn't take longer than about 30 seconds.

My cleaning is the same for other c/c pens (although the old cart is normally not needed)

Blue_Moon

I'd recommend that you get a bulb syringe. This video by Brian Goulet gives you step-by-step instructions. Check out the other videos by Brian. He is well respected in this forum and can teach you a lot. http://www.gouletpens.com/Articles.asp?ID=437

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best! Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

The nib of a fountain pen is the metal part that actually touches the paper. The width and firmness of the nib, combined with the way you hold a pen, as well as your choice of ink and paper, will determine how the writing style of your pen will look. Below are writing samples for different nib sizes of this pen.

The LAMY  safari is a workhorse pen, known throughout the fountain pen community for its ruggedness, reliability, and no-nonsense functionality. The triangular grip makes it great for those starting out who have no idea how to hold a fountain pen, but it's used and loved by fountain pen lovers of all levels of experience.

The  safari comes with an interchangeable silver steel nib, which can be easily swapped out for another size. This fountain pen comes with a blue LAMY ink cartridge so you can get started writing right away.

If you'd like to use bottled fountain pen ink, you can also purchase a LAMY Z28 converter. Note: To ensure quality performance, LAMY tests their pens as a final step in manufacturing. If you happen to see any residual blue ink, rest assured that this is normal.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do i fill a fountain pen with ink 8eda1617-f73a-4daf-8245-6d2bf4abeb7b.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog .

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

  • How to Clean a Cartridge/Converter Pen

  • How to Clean a Piston Pen

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

LAMY Safari Fountain Pen - Red - Fine Nib

LAMY Safari Fountain Pen - Red - Fine Nib - LAMY L16F

  • Ergonomically shaped grip section.
  • Ink window in the barrel.
  • Easy ink installation—simply put the cartridge inside the barrel or grip section, then screw the barrel and grip section together to automatically puncture the cartridge.
  • Sturdy ABS plastic construction.
  • Large, flexible metal pocket clip.
  • One blue ink cartridge .
  • To prevent the ink cartridge from being punctured in transit, this pen comes with a cardboard spacer ring between the barrel and grip section. The ring must be removed before using the pen.
  • This pen may come with ink residue in the nib from being dip tested by LAMY at the factory. As with all new fountain pens, we recommend giving your pen a good cleaning before you use it.

  1. Eyedropper Lamy Safari?!

txinsk. Member - Gold. 465. Location:Saskatchewan Canada. Posted August 6, 2011. The eyedropper conversion is easy to do, the only issue I see is that the Safari has the 2 ink windows which are huge holes in the pen body. With the converter this is not a problem, as an eyedropper this makes for a comically messy scene.

  2. Can you turn a Lamy Safari into an eyedropper pen?

Hello, it is possible to make a safari into an eyedropper. You have to get the body (the cylinder with the windows) of a ballpoint safari pen. That way the ink does not pour out. As others have mentioned, it can be problematic (burps and spills). There is a thread on another forum from someone who did just that.

  3. Lamy Safari As Eyedropper

#3 —maybe there is an object of just the right shape and diameter to insert into the Safari Barrel during this epoxy-ing, and gentle twisting after setting would release this object and leave behind a smooth inner wall where the epoxy set? #4 — maybe a sincere letter campaign would encourage Lamy to make an eyedropper Safari? ;-)

  4. LAMY Safari: A Comprehensive Guide

The LAMY Safari is a minimalist favorite in the world of writing instruments. Since its launch in the eighties, the LAMY Safari has expanded from fountain pens to include other writing instruments, like rollerballs, ballpoints, and mechanical pencils.LAMY didn't stop there: a pen made of aluminum known as the AL-Star soon joined the family, followed by the Vista and Lx.

  6. Lamy Vista Fountain Pen Eyedropper @BureauDirect

Lamy Vista Rollerball BARREL ONLY. £4.30 at Bureau Direct. The barrel does not have the ink window found on the fountain pen. It DOES, however, have little holes at the back of the barrel, which will need filling. For filling the back of the barrel, I use: Revell Model Tools - Professional Contact Glue. You can use another glue/epoxy if you ...

  7. My eyedropper mod for Lamy Safari, because I love the ...

Besides the need for an eyedropper, burping is another inconvenience. It can happen as I screw in the barrel and when the ink gets too low. Especially if the room temp is low and you start using the pen. The air inside can expand and push little bit of ink out. Looks nice tho.

  11. The Honest Review of the Lamy Safari Charcoal Edition fountain ...

Lamy safari first showed up in the 1980s in clay red and an army green looking colors along with a matte black color that was called charcoal. The pen was the culmination of the Bauhaus principle but on a budget and Wolfgang Fabian and Bernt Spiegel did a great job integrating the Bauhaus philosophy of form follows function perfectly.

  18. Basic Maintenance Of Lamy Safari
