The Harry Styles Show (and Some Music) Comes to New York
The first two nights of a 15-concert run at Madison Square Garden were heavy on charisma, banter and nods to the past.
By Jon Caramanica and Lindsay Zoladz
Over the weekend, Harry Styles began a 15-night stand at Madison Square Garden, an impressive feat befitting one of the most popular musicians in the world. (He’ll begin a similar stretch in October at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. — his tour supporting his latest album, “Harry’s House,” consists of a series of residencies .) But Styles, who came to fame as part of the British boy band One Direction, is still relatively early in his solo career, and is still establishing his sonic ideas. Two New York Times critics attended the first two nights of his Love on Tour run in New York to see how he wielded his gravitational pull.
JON CARAMANICA I always liked One Direction , more or less. Or maybe I liked what the group represented: a rejection of the hyperprocessed boy band, and by extension an acknowledgment that doing the least can still earn you the most. They weren’t trying to delude audiences about their artistry — their casualness was foundational to their appeal. But that approach wears thin in a solo act, and time and again during the Harry Styles show at the Garden on Saturday night, I found myself vexed. Off-the-charts charisma, collective exuberance, decently competent band, and yet at the center of it all, Styles was inscrutable. Musically, at least. I’ve rarely if ever seen someone more confident in their ownership of the stage, but everything underneath felt slight. All razzle, no dazzle. What am I missing? (I’m not missing anything.)
LINDSAY ZOLADZ Hmm, Jon, maybe a boa? Despite all of the construction around Madison Square Garden, I had no difficulty finding the venue’s entrance: I just followed the trail of rainbow feathers shed from the signature Styles neckwear that at least half of the audience seemed to be sporting. My thoughts today (and over the next several weeks of Styles’s 15-date residency) are with the Garden’s cleanup crew.
I’ve long considered One Direction to be the quintessential boy band of the fan-service era — expertly primed to respond to the demands of their devoted, social-media savvy stan army — and after catching Styles’s show on Sunday night, I’m ready to declare him the defining solo artist of that era, too. I am not sure I’ve ever seen a pop star wave so much from the stage in my entire life? Roughly a third of his performance seemed to comprise waving, pointing and blowing kisses to various sections of the audience, whose volume approximated a jet taking off. Most of the time I could not hear Styles’s voice well enough to determine if he was hitting all the notes, though the crowd’s reaction was energetic enough that they did not seem to care. This show felt, as so much of Styles’s music does, first and foremost for the fans, which — I agree — can sometimes make the man at the center of it all feel like a bit of an enigma.
CARAMANICA Let’s try to distill the Harry Styles musical proposition. He has nowhere near the determined agita of, say, Shawn Mendes; nowhere near the vocal litheness of Justin Bieber. (Also:#FreeZayn) And it goes without saying that despite the rampant Eltonisms on display throughout Styles’s solo catalog, and the (sub?)conscious echoes of John’s sartorial glamour in Styles’s Gucci gear, he has nowhere near John’s verve or panache. It is all quite a brittle foundation upon which to build this fame skyscraper.
But yes, the waving. Also the utterly-at-ease shimmying. And that thing he did mid-show where he took a fan’s cellphone and tried calling her ex on it. (Josh, if you’re reading this, you got washed, buddy — everyone at Madison Square Garden hates you.) See also: him singing “Happy Birthday” to his friend Florence. Florence Welch, of the Machine ? No. Florence Pugh, his co-star in the upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling”? Also no. Florence, daughter of Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Group? Yes.
This is the essence of his appeal — his is not a top-down sort of fame. He’s the approachable but protective friend, the one who leads with good judgment and progressive wholesomeness. (At previous shows, he’s helped people come out, or to confess their love.) That’s part of why, even though public discussion of Styles often centers on his dating life or the ways he flirts with gender fluidity, his actual show is conventional and chaste. The most risqué bit was when he explained how the in-the-round performance would work. Sometimes, “we’ll be ass to face,” he said. “I’ll be sure to distribute face and ass equally throughout the show — there’s plenty to go around.” It was cheeky. Even “Watermelon Sugar,” his lightly erotic hit, was dry.
ZOLADZ Styles did not call any exes at our show, but he did a funny bit where he attempted to count all of the “golf dads” in the audience — 34, apparently. He also broke some solemn “bad news” about something that had happened just before the show: “I’ve blown my tongue on some soup.” So yes, effortlessly charismatic banter, and he works every corner of the stage. The set and wardrobe were a bit more minimal than I anticipated; I expected at least one costume change. But I would describe the look he was going for, in a red-and-white-striped jumpsuit, as “sexy candy cane.” The fashion, the fans, the force of personality — it feels like we’re talking about everything but the music here, which is perhaps telling. How did the songs strike you, Jon, and did you get anything out of them that you don’t get on his records?
CARAMANICA Basically, we’re of opposite opinions on Styles’s albums — I’m more partial to the most recent one, “Harry’s House,” and I know you lean more toward the previous one, “Fine Line.” When the songs were … funkier — and I use that designation extremely loosely — his performance felt more full. I’m thinking “Satellite,” and also “Cinema,” both from the new album — the rhythm section is in the lead, but doesn’t overpower him. I also liked what he did with “Adore You,” melting the chorus into more of a restrained tease. But when he went unadorned, like on “Matilda,” the air in the room felt heavier. And “Sign of the Times,” the first Styles solo hit, was ponderous, a karaoke take on mid-1970s power-mope.
ZOLADZ I sometimes detect a divide between the music Styles wants to make — the big, bold, if somewhat generic-sounding ’70s-style rock of his first album — and the more pop-oriented fare that better suits his personality. Not surprisingly, the songs that worked best for me live were the ones that manage to satisfy both of those impulses, like the groovy, Tame Impala-esque “Daylight” or the still-ubiquitous hit “As It Was.” I wish he’d ended the set on that note, but regrettably he had one more song to play after that, the stomping, Led-Zeppelin-cosplay rocker “Kiwi,” an unfortunate live staple that I consider one of his weakest songs. But, as ever, he seemed to relish playing the role of bombastic rock star, even if the material itself didn’t always electrify.
I found it refreshing, though, that Styles is not shying away from his former group on this tour: The first song on his preperformance playlist is One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” — much to the shrieking delight of the thousands of fans who sang along to every word — and during his set he actually played a louder and more rock-oriented version of One Direction’s 2011 hit “What Makes You Beautiful,” which happens to be from an album that his former bandmate Louis Tomlinson recently called a disparaging word we can’t print here. How did you feel about Styles’s raucous 1D cover, Jon?
CARAMANICA That was one of the musical high points, if not the peak. It was as if a rowdy bar band momentarily inhabited Styles’s very deliberately understated crew. On Saturday, too, people absolutely lost it when the opening bars of “Best Song Ever” hit right after the conclusion of Blood Orange’s temperate and tasteful opening set. It was the purest release of pent-up demand that I’ve witnessed in quite some time. And that’s how the rest of the night went, too — demand leading supply. Fervor without feeling (and certainly without friction). An arena-size canvas merely doodled on with pencil.
And for the record, a friend lent me her pink-and-white boa for a few songs — it didn’t help.

Harry Styles is going on his Love On Tour again and bringing quite a bit of “Harry’s House” back to Los Angeles County this fall.
The “Watermelon Sugar” and “As It Was” crooner is only visiting five cities on the arena tour, which kicks off with Madi Diaz at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena on Aug. 15. But he’s spending an ample amount of time at each stop.
After his two-night gig in Toronto, Styles takes up residence at Madison Square Garden in New York for 10 shows between Aug. 28 and Sept. 21. Blood Orange will join him for those shows. From there, he moves on to Austin’s Moody Center with the Gabriels for five shows, then to Chicago’s United Center with Jessie Ware for another five.

Styles sojourns to the newly named Kia Forum in Inglewood on Halloween. The former One Direction star, who stars in Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film “Don’t Worry Darling,” has set 10 dates at the Forum and wraps that leg of the tour on Nov. 15. Singer-songwriter Ben Harper will accompany him at the local shows.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on May 26, but Ticketmaster Verified Fan registration is already open and will allow a select few to purchase tickets before the general public.
The 28-year-old superstar last played three sold-out shows at the Forum in November, when Times critic Mikael Wood described him as “a kind of woke heartthrob known for his gender-neutral fashion” and “proudly progressive stance” whose music “looks decidedly backward.” Styles has made no secret of pulling inspiration from Fleetwood Mac. He invited Stevie Nicks onstage at 2017 and 2019 L.A. shows and even tapped Mick Fleetwood as the face of his beauty brand Pleasing in March.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Love Earth" tour coming to Colorado this summer
By Austen Erblat
Updated on: April 23, 2024 / 3:01 PM MDT / CBS Colorado
Neil Young is making his return to the Denver area this summer after not having played in Colorado since 2016.
He and Crazy Horse are set to play Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village on July 31. The last time Young played in Colorado was in October 2016 in Telluride, where he owns a barn he rebuilt. That barn is also home to a recording studio he called "Studio in the Clouds" where he recorded his 2019 album, "Colorado."
That album marked the reunion of Young and Crazy Horse after a 7-year hiatus. The group has played together for a combined 50 years.
"In the spirit it's offered...made this for the Horse lovers. I can't stop it. The horse is runnin'. What a ride we have. I don't want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share," Young said in a statement about the tour.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
Presales began Tuesday but general ticket sales don't start until 10 a.m. Friday. You can buy tickets at AXS.com .

Neil Young’s highly-anticipated Love Earth Tour just kicked off with Crazy Horse in San Diego, California yesterday at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. As always, Young puts on one hell of a show and hasn’t slowed down at this point in his six-decade career.

Young performed some of his greatest hits, including “Cortez The Killer” and “Heart Of Gold” to fans’ delight. He performed a couple of deep cuts as well.
Young and Crazy Horse killed the performance, and it’s clear that both the legend and the band have quite a bit of pent-up creativity. They’ve just put out a new collaborative album as well, FU##IN’ UP , which was released just a few days ago on April 20. An all-format version will be released tomorrow, April 26.
Neil Young’s Love Earth Tour Setlist
Curious about what you can expect from Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s current tour? Here’s the setlist from last night’s show:
1. “Cortez The Killer”
2. “Cinnamon Girl”
3. “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)”
4. “Don’t Cry No Tears”
5. “Down By The River”
6. “The Losing End (When You’re On)”
7. “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”
8. “Powderfinger”
9. “Love And Only Love”
10. “Comes A Time” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)
11. “Heart Of Gold” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)
12. “Human Highway” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)
13. “Don’t Be Denied”
14. “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)”
While fans shouldn’t expect Young’s setlist to be exactly the same for all of the Love Earth Tour’s upcoming dates, last night’s show in Cali gave a pretty solid preview of what fans can expect from the rest of the trek.
Young and Crazy Horse will perform another set tonight at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre before traveling to Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and onward towards Canada.

Beach Boys' Mike Love on giving the Beatles songwriting tips, Brian Wilson and 'Kokomo'
Mike Love was obviously pleased to see the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” holding strong at No. 2 in the latest update of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in Rolling Stone , with only Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” above it on the 2023 edition of the list.
“When I first saw that, I said, ‘Well, I demand a recount,” he says with a laugh. “Being the bratty sort of guy that I am, you know? But anyway, no, that’s pretty good company, don’t you think?”
Love is speaking by phone from the Caribbean, about to catch a flight to Phoenix to visit his son, Brian, who lives in Scottsdale, before a string of tour dates with his latest version of the Beach Boys that includes performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, and Talking Stick Resort in metro Phoenix (on Friday, April 26).
Here’s what he had to say.
Mike Love on the Beach Boys at Stagecoach Festival: 'We do what we do'
It's interesting to see the Beach Boys at a country music festival. Have you done Stagecoach before?
No, although we did appear with our friends LoCash on that stage a couple years ago . They did a song called 'Beach Boys.' It's, like, some country guys going to the beach. And they asked us to sing with them, so we did.
So you're just doing your normal Beach Boys set at Stagecoach?
Well, yeah, we do what we do, you know? We'll do all our hit songs that we're known for, everything from “Surfin' Safari” and Surfin’ U.S.A.” to “I Get Around” and “Fun, Fun, Fun” to “California Girls” and “Help Me, Rhonda,” “Good Vibrations” and “Kokomo.” And John Stamos is gonna be with us. He loves to come out and play drums with us.
Beach Boys flashback: How the Beach Boys took 'small town' Phoenix by storm in 1964: 'It was a big thing'
Paul McCartney's Beach Boys moment on 'Back in the U.S.S.R'
It’s great to see “Pet Sounds” hanging strong at No. 2 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
It's amazing. Bruce Johnston, who joined our group in 1965 to take Brian Wilson's place after Glen Campbell filled in for six months or so, actually took the album as an acetate, before it was printed up. Keith Moon of the Who introduced Bruce to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. So he played the album for them a couple of times in his suite.
We have a connection that goes back many years with the Beatles. And, of course, I spent a couple of months in Rishikesh at the Maharishi's place. I didn't know before I got there but when I did get there the Beatles were all there. That was a fascinating time. Meditation and music. In fact, I was the first person to hear “Back in the U.S.S.R.” from Paul McCartney's acoustic guitar at the breakfast table one morning.
What did you think of them doing their Beach Boys thing on “Back in the U.S.S.R.”?
I thought it was amazing. I was staying in the same sort of area. It was like a motel kind of thing. Paul was down at the other end. And Prudence Farrow was in a similar area. You know, John Lennon came up with that song “Dear Prudence.” But yeah, when Paul came down, he said, “Listen to this, Mike. Flew in from Miami Beach, BOAC” and all that.
I said, “Well, Paul, what you've got to do is talk about all the girls around Russia in the middle part,” which he did. So it turns out Sir Paul is pretty capable of crafting a tune.
There was a lot of music that came out of that course. They actually did a song called “The Spiritual Rejuvenation Foundation” and played it for me on my birthday. It was styled after “Fun, Fun, Fun.” I had my birthday on the 15th of March and George Harrison had his on the 25th of February. So we're both Pisces, as it turns out, and we're both very much into our meditation.
Do you find that meditation help with creativity?
Yeah, just life in general. And I'm in a creative field. So it's absolutely helped me a lot. On a practical level, Transcendental Meditation, which is taught by Maharishi, your metabolism slows down to a level of rest twice as deep as sleep. So you get this profoundly restful relaxation, which is great for everything, your emotions and your physical well-being. I've been doing it since December of '67 when I first learned meditation from Maharishi.
Mike Love on the Beach Boys throwing a curve with 'Pet Sounds'
Getting back to "Pet Sounds," does it feel as through that album has been getting more and more appreciated as it ages?
You know, Capitol Records really didn't know when we first made it what to do with it . So it never got the push that it probably deserved, because we really put a lot into that album. But it was regarded very highly by all the people in the music business. Paul McCartney once said that “God Only Knows” was his favorite song. I mean, that's a pretty fantastic statement coming from a guy who's written some of the most famous and best songs ever.
But Capitol Records really didn't know what to do with it because it was such a departure. When we played the record for the A&R guy, the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet, he wanted something more like “California Girls,” “I Get Around” and “Fun, Fun, Fun” because they'd had so much success with that type of thing.
But here's an album with symphonic orchestrations and stuff, dealing more with emotional themes than, you know, the beach or girls or cars, which there's nothing wrong with that stuff. I love it. But they just didn't know how to handle it. Then “Good Vibrations” came along a few months after that and went to No 1. and we were voted the No. 1 group in Great Britain, No. 2 being the Beatles, on the strength of “Good Vibrations.”
“Barbara Ann” came out in the first part of the year, then “Pet Sounds” and “Good Vibrations.” That was quite a year for us, 1966.
That was quite a year for you. Could you address the stories we've all heard that you were not a fan of what Brian had come up with for “Pet Sounds” when you first heard it?
That's really not true. I don't know. There's always been detractors. But no, I worked on every song on that album and even wrote some of the words. So that's absolutely inaccurate. In fact, I named the album “Pet Sounds.” Brian didn't know what to call it. I said, “Well, how about 'Pet Sounds?'” And that led to our going to the San Diego Zoo, the petting zoo, and taking the album cover photo, which is pretty trippy.
Anyway, so yeah, I came up with the title of the album. And I'm the one that presented it to Capitol Records along with Brian. He and I were the ones that took that album and played it for them.
And Capitol was like, “Well, we don’t hear a single?”
Well, they were used to getting these two-, three-minute singles that were so successful. And it was kind of a departure. But hey, that was how many years ago now? It’s all worked out. We do “God Only Knows,” “Sloop John B” and “Wouldn't It Be Nice” at virtually every concert we do. So it's well represented in our shows along with the other singles we've managed to have been blessed enough to have.
I mean, we're one of the top groups ever in terms of number of Top 40 singles.
Mike Love on thought of another reunion with Brian Wilson
You guys reunited with Brian and Al Jardine for a 50th anniversary tour and album. Do you think we'll ever see all the guys come together like that again?
I think maybe it would be interesting if we could get in the studio, but Brian's not doing very well lately. I hope the best for him. And I think it'd be great if we could, but we'll have to see if it actually can happen. Brian hasn't been touring for the last year or so. And I'm not anticipating him going out anymore. In fact, they're putting him in a conservatorship or something. (Multiple news outlets have reported that Wilson's family has asked a court in Los Angeles to set up a conservatorship for Wilson.)
But there is a documentary coming out on the Beach Boys and we ended up getting together at Paradise Cove, the beach where we took our first album cover shots. So it was really nice. Brian and I were reminiscing together, along with the other guys, about stuff that happened when we used to go to high school games together. He remembers things that I'd forgotten. So that was pretty neat, to get together and reminisce with my cousin.
It sounds like you guys are in a better place these days?
Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah, absolutely. Especially with Brian. We go back to childhood together. The first time I remember hearing him sing, I was on my grandmother Wilson's lap singing “Danny Boy.” And we grew up singing all the Everly Brothers songs, Chuck Berry songs and all the doo-wop songs of the day. So we have a lifetime of experiences and love and respect for each other's abilities.
That's sweet. You said you could see getting together in the studio. What did you think of the way “That's Why God Made the Radio” turned out?
Well, I don't know what to say about that in a positive way, because I was told that I was gonna be able to get together with Brian and write. But that was disallowed at the time by I'm not sure who. But anyway, that didn't happen. That was kind of an inducement to me for all of us to get together, actually, but it didn't turn out the way I would've liked it, so.... That's too bad, though. Missed opportunity, I think.
Missing 'Kokomo' at the Beach Boys Grammy tribute
What did you think of that Grammy tribute to the Beach Boys last year?
I thought it was really interesting and really far out. I mean, 'Don't Worry Baby.' 'Sail on Sailor' was really, really interesting. Leann Rimes looked beautiful and sounded great doing 'Caroline, No,' I believe. And then our friends Hanson did 'Barbara Ann.' The only thing I missed was they didn't do 'Kokomo.' Now 'Kokomo' was No. 1 in 1988 and was featured on 'Full House' because John Stamos is a big fan. And we've been recognized by kids for generations now who've seen us on 'Full House' because of the reruns. It's such a popular show. And John Stamos still likes to come out and play drums with us.
Mike Love on the Beach Boys book and forthcoming movie
I know there's a new book 'The Beach Boys by the Beach Boys.' What can you tell me about that?
I'm glad you brought that up. That's by Genesis. They make these fantastic books. They put a ton of work into it with historical stuff, things you've never seen before, things I've never seen before or at least don't remember seeing. But yeah, they're fascinating books.
I think an initial 500 of them completely sold out and they're gonna release some more. They have different levels financially. Some of them are really expensive, and some of them are not quite as, but they're all top quality stuff by Genesis. Those are really great.
And the documentary that's coming out, Frank Marshall, the filmmaker, he was involved in the creation of the documentary that'll be out on, I believe, May 24th. I think we're going to a premiere on the 20th or so in Hollywood. So that's another big thing. And I think it'll stimulate a lot of awareness of The Beach Boys. So a lot of good things are going on these days. We're doing some big festivals like the jazz festival and Stagecoach. So it's a good time for us. We're having a great time.
Mike Love on the latest round of Beach Boys reissues
There's been some interesting reissue projects lately. Box sets combining “Sunflower” and “Surf's Up” and then “Carl and the Passions” and “Holland.” What did you think of those projects?
Great. I mean, “Holland” was a fantastic experience. I lived in Holland for six months. We wanted to get away from L.A. to record it and live in a completely different country. It was pretty fascinating. I thought it was great. In the meantime, we're in Holland doing “California Saga,” a trilogy about Big Sur and stuff. “Holland” was great.
Every album has something special about it. A couple of those albums are where individuals came out with their creativity, whether it be Carl or Brian, Alan or Dennis, Bruce Johnston. Everybody got a chance to be a little bit creative, whereas up through “Pet Sounds” and “Good Vibrations,” primarily Brian was the writer and producer.
I mean, I co-wrote with him tons of words and hooks on all the hit singles, although it wasn't originally credited, because my uncle (Murry Wilson, who managed the Beach Boys until they fired him and controlled their publishing until 1969), frankly, cheated me on that part of things, which, you know.... But that was rectified . Anyway, all the albums had their own personality.
I've been listening to “Friends” a lot lately. Such an underrated album.
That's precisely what I mean. There are many great tunes on some of those lesser-known albums. Every group has its heyday. But we've been blessed enough to hang on to millions of fans who still love to hear our song. So we're very fortunate to be able to do a lifetime of music and still have some of our albums regarded very highly.
Do you have a personal favorite Beach Boys album?
You know what? I don't know. It's like, “Do you have a personal favorite kid?”

F olk rock legend Neil Young and his long-collaborating band Crazy Horse announced their upcoming Love Earth Tour a few months ago. The tour is set to kick off tomorrow, and the artists have recently extended the US and Canada tour with a few more dates! The new dates will bring Young and the band to brand new dates in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, don’t worry. We’ll give you the details on scoring seats.
The first stop on the Crazy Horse and Neil Young 2024 Tour will be in San Diego, California on April 24 at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. The tour is expected to close on September 29 in Hollywood, California at Hollywood Bowl.

General on-sale for the new dates will begin on April 26 at 10:00 am local. The new dates are making waves at the moment, so there’s a chance they will sell out by the time the presale events end. If that’s the case, we recommend checking Stubhub for last-minute tickets.
Stubhub is a great resource for high-profile tours like this one because they often have a decent stock of tickets even after a particular concert has sold out. It’s worth taking a look!

Anne Hathaway is looking back on her younger “chronically stressed” self with grace.
The “Devil Wears Prada” actress, 41, opened up about experiencing constant stress as a younger actress and taking life for granted.
“As a formerly chronically stressed young woman, I just remember thinking one day, ‘You are taking this for granted. You are taking your life for granted,’” she explained in the debut episode of New York Magazine’s “The Interview” podcast .
“‘You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky, and that would be lights out.’ So when I find the old instincts rising, I just tell myself, ‘You are not going to die stressed.'”
The “Princess Diaries” actress didn’t have an answer for why she was so stressed, but said she “didn’t know how to breathe yet.”

“That was really complicated,” she shared. “It’s actually too big an answer and the simple answer is literally everything. I was very in my head about a lot of things.”
In addition to trouble breathing, Hathaway also chatted about not being comfortable in her body, which she identifies as a somatic experience.

“It feels a little too exposed to discuss the alienation I felt from my body, but there was a lot of somatic stress there,” she said.
The “Les Misérables” star said has faced some uncomfortable experiences when she was just getting her start as an actress.
Earlier this month, Hathaway told V Magazine she was previously asked to kiss 10 men for a chemistry test.
“I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’” she recalled.
“And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ Because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross,” she said.
While she wasn’t interested in doing the task, she said she went along with the test because she didn’t want to be labeled “difficult.”
“It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me,” the Oscar winner expressed. “It was just a very different time and now we know better.”

Guyton’s new single, a gentle ballad about a mother’s fierce love, opens with the heart-touching lines, “I see pictures of my mama, hangin’ on the wall/ She’s never looked so happy, and I’ve never looked so small/ Now I’m holdin’ you and I know what they say is true/ When a baby’s born that’s when a mother’s born too.”
Guyton and husband Grant Savoy welcomed their first child, son Grayson, in Feb. 2021 and the acoustic ballad’s moving lyric video features home movie footage of Guyton in the hospital cradling her then newborn and spending time with the now toddler. “Cuz I felt it before, but it wasn’t like this/ Ain’t a thing I wouldn’t do, ain’t a thing I wouldn’t give/ It’s the kind you fall into and never hit the bottom of/ It’s a scary love,” she sings on the chorus.
