How to Get From Lisbon to Nazaré

By car from lisbon to nazaré  .

Driving yourself to Nazaré is an easy way to do it. If you’re the kind of person who likes to have the freedom of their own mode of transport when travelling, then there’s no doubt that this will be the best method for you.

The journey from Lisbon to Nazaré takes around an hour and a half to drive. The route goes along the A8 motorway.

This road is safe and straightforward, but the only downside is that you’ll have to pay a toll to use this highway; this costs around seven euros.

On the plus side, you can stop off along the route and explore more of this stretch of Portugal’s shoreline (called by some the “Silver Coast”). You’ll have the freedom to do as you want if you’ve got a car.

Renting a car is the most expensive way of getting there, but if you already have a car (i.e. you’re on a road trip as part of a longer Portugal itinerary ) then there’s no worries.

You’ll also have to consider parking, and having small change for any car parks and tolls you need to pay along the way.

By train from Lisbon to Nazaré

Unfortunately for all the train fans out there, there is no direct train connecting Lisbon to Nazaré. However, if you are dead set on catching the train, then it is possible.

First of all you’ll travel from Lisbon to Caldas da Rainha, then connect up to Nazaré via a bus from Caldas da Rainha.

Trains leave from Lisbon’s Santa Apolonia railway station fairly regularly, so you won’t have to wait around for too long.

The journey by train isn’t the quickest – taking around two and a half hours to Caldas da Rainha alone – and it’s definitely not the most convenient way either.

By bus from Lisbon to Nazaré

If you want to travel by public transport, then the bus is your best option. Buses leave Lisbon’s Sete Rios bus terminal, which is a stop on the Lisbon metro, making it easy to reach from other areas of the city.

The buses travelling from Lisbon to Nazaré leave roughly every hour or so, and the journey takes around two hours.

Tickets cost approximately 11 euros (one way), and thankfully you can book tickets to Nazaré for up to 30 days in advance, making it all that more convenient. Another bonus of the bus is where it drops you off.

The stop in Nazaré is close to a lot of the town’s major sights, making it easy to simply hop off the bus and start exploring without having to worry about the hassle of a taxi or walking for a while to get anywhere interesting.

With a Nazaré tour from Lisbon

If you want to leave the stresses of planning a day trip from Lisbon to Nazaré to somebody else, then a tour is best for you. It can be all too easy to get hung up on train times and bus timetables, and taking a tour just takes away all of that hassle.

For one thing, you could opt for a tour that takes you to Nazaré on a day trip from Lisbon .

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation, taken to the coastal town itself, shown the best bits, and whisked back to the capital. How easy is that?

Many of the tours involve trips to other destinations in the area – Obidos , for example – meaning you get to see more of the region; this is great if you don’t have much time to explore, and you’ll get to pack more sightseeing into your day.

In all, tours from Lisbon to Nazaré may not be the cheapest, but for those who don’t have long in Portugal, or who really don’t like the idea of having to figure out public transport, then it is the best and most convenient option.

Best things to do during a Nazaré day trip

Visit the faro di nazaré & surf museum  .

Nazaré is all about the sun, sea and sand – and the surf, of course. Surfing is big news in Nazaré, thanks to its huge waves, and a visit to this coastal town wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Surf Museum.

Not only is it very cool to see all the boards and read stories about many of the big wave surfers who’ve surfed in Nazaré, but you’ll get to learn a bit about why such huge waves form here.

The waves crashing down on Norte Beach can be monstrous: I’m talking up to 30 metres high!

If you’re into surfing, then this place is going to be uber interesting. And at just one euro per person for admission, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Faro di Nazaré (or Nazaré Lighthouse) is a good vantage point to see what all the fuss is about. On a good day, you’ll see dozens of surfers out there catching the waves that roll in. It looks super impressive.

The lighthouse is actually situated on the roof of a 16th-century fort that the surf museum is housed in: Forte de Sao Miguel Arcanjo. It was established by King Sebastian I in 1577 to protect the (then) village of Nazaré.

The lighthouse itself was a more recent creation, and was added in 1903.

Take the funicular from Nazare Beach up to the old town

Nazare may be famous for its waves, but the old town still packs a punch. While the main part of town is a little touristy, the older part is a much quieter and altogether more charming spot to soak up some great views.

Called Sítio, this district feels almost like a separate village. It’s perched up high on a bluff, so you’ll need to take the funicular to get there.

The funicular, which was designed by one of Gustave Eiffel’s proteges, was built in 1889 and leads up from the beach to the Sítio neighbourhood.

Once you arrive you’ll be glad you made the journey. For one thing, there’s the 7th-century Chapel of São Gião, which is a rare example of a surviving religious building of the Visigoths.

Enjoy the view from Mirador del Suberco over Nazaré & the beach

Over 100 metres above the waves, the Mirador del Suberco serves up some seriously sublime views out over the surrounding landscape.

You’ll get some great views out over Nazaré and the beach, as well as the dramatic coastline further along.

And if you’re hungry, don’t worry: there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat nearby. It’s particularly beautiful at sunset.

Chill at Nazaré Beach

How could you visit Nazaré and not spend a little time on the beach? This long, sandy beach (1.5 kilometres to be exact) has plenty of places where you can hire a sun lounger, or simply find a spot on the sand.

It might not be one of the famous and scenic Algarve beaches , but it’s beautiful nonetheless. It’s sheltered, there are plenty of amenities, and it’s a nice place to just kick back and enjoy the sun.

Explore Bairro dos Pescadores

Translating to Fishermen’s District, the Bairro dos Pescadores is a historic part of Nazaré to explore. Here you’ll find narrow streets lined with white-washed houses and local life playing out.

On Fridays, make a beeline here: there’s a local market in the district to check out.

Sunset on the beach in Nazare

Enjoy sunset at the beach with a seafront dinner

There’s no more romantic way to end a day at Nazaré than with a sunset at the beach. Well, the only way to top it off would be to add a seafront dinner on top of that.

I can speak from experience that Pangeia by the Sea is an awesome venue for that (make sure to try the octopus).

Is doing a Nazaré day trip worth it?

For sure, a day trip from Lisbon to Nazaré is well worth it! I really believe Nazaré should be on everyone’s Portugal itinerary . If you’re a keen surfer, then chances are you’ll want to spend even longer than a day in Nazaré anyway.

I would suggest, however, that if you can spend a night in Nazaré then you’ll be better placed to enjoy both the town and more surrounding sights.

Being on the beach, you know you’ll never run out of things to do, as you could just spend more time here chilling out!

What to pack for a Lisbon to Nazaré day trip

Besides the usual travel essentials , there isn’t anything specific that you absolutely need to be packing for a Nazaré day trip. That said, here are some useful things to remember!

Camera – Given how beautiful Nazaré is, you want to make sure you capture it in all its beauty!

Reusable water bottle – Especially if you plan to do a lot of walking, bring a bottle you can refill and ensure you stay hydrated.

Lisbon to Nazare: See the Huge Waves at Praia do Norte

BY JARED DILLINGHAM

HOW TO GET FROM LISBON TO NAZARE, PORTUGAL

It’s very easy to get from Lisbon to Nazare, to visit its famous beach: Praia do Norte.

Renting a car and driving to the town on Portugal’s central coast is the best option.  Nazare is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of Lisbon.

Praia do Norte is known for its giant waves that attract surfers from around the world.  In fact, Nazare holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, with a height of 80 feet!

As a side note, the correct spelling of Nazaré has the accent on the “e,” but American keyboards don’t have that as an option during a quick search.  So … I’ll be using the spelling of the city that’s more apt to come up in searches from the United States.  I apologize for the inconsistency!

Lisbon to Nazare

How to Get from Lisbon to Nazare

Nazare’s close proximity to Lisbon makes it a perfect day trip.  A rental car will get you there in a little over an hour.  A bus ride will take twice as long, but cost far less.

Unfortunately, trains aren’t a great option for this day trip.

Rent a car for a day trip from Lisbon to Nazare

While renting a car while in Lisbon isn’t necessary for the entire trip, it will definitely help if you’d like to take a day trip to Nazare.

The drive will take between 60 and 90 minutes.

🚙 CLICK HERE to Search Rental Cars

It’s important to note: you don’t have to rent from the airport in Lisbon!  If you’re staying in a hotel downtown, it’s probably easier to rent from one of the rental car locations in the central part of the city.

Jared Dillingham at the Sixt in Lisbon

Hertz, Sixt, and other rental companies have smaller locations in a cluster in the city center.   Discover Cars makes it easy to search them all at once time.

Here are a few tips about renting a car in Lisbon for a day trip to Nazare:

  • You can rent the car downtown and return it at the airport for no extra fee (since the airport return area is open 24/7).
  • Make sure to ask for an automatic transmission (if that’s what you prefer) since most rentals will be manual.
  • You’ll pass through toll booths, so get a rental with a device that allows you to pass through without stopping. You’ll simply pay the tolls later.

Also, reserve your rental car in Lisbon in advance and you’ll pay far less.  Due to a change in our itinerary, we reserved our Nissan Juke the morning of our day trip to Nazare, and rather than $50, it cost $170 for the day.

What to do in Nazare, at Praia do Norte

The big draw in Nazare is Praia do Norte, the famous beach with some of the biggest (if not the biggest) waves in the world.

Nazare itself is a pretty sizable beach town with plenty of things to do on a day trip from Lisbon.

If you wander down toward the fort (which most do) remember that there are no bathrooms at all along the hike.

The Beaches in Nazare

There are several named beaches in Nazare, but the coastline is essentially broken in half by the land that juts out into the sea, where the old fort is.

While they share the same stretch of Portugal’s coast, these two sections of beach are very different in a number of ways.

Praia do Norte

This is the beach in Nazare with much larger waves, north of the fort.

You can access Praia do Norte by several paths, including a fairly steep, dirt trail down from the fort overlook.

Praia do Norte in Nazare Portugal

The beach itself is nice and clean, with interestingly grainy sand.  There are signs warning of the dangers of swimming here.  You’ll find more space to spread out here, compared to the more crowded beaches south of the fort.

Praia do Norte sandy beach in Nazare

You won’t find much in the way of food or services here. It’s a much quieter beach experience than the more populated Praia da Nazare.

Praia da Nazare

The ocean water at Praia da Nazare is much calmer, so it’s more popular for sunbathers and families to visit. This is where you’d want to head to swim in the ocean (unless you’re a pro surfer).

Nazare beach on a day trip from Lisbon

The ocean floor off the coast (Nazare Canyon) creates very smooth ocean conditions and small waves on this beach, on the southern side of Nazare.

You’ll find beach clubs and free public beaches, and several restaurants along the coast.

Take a Tuk-tuk

If all the walking is too much, or the hills are too steep, you can jump in one of the tuk-tuks that are all over town.

Nazare Tuktuk

They’re primarily there to get you down to the ancient fort, which is the present-day popular viewing platform for the big waves and surf competitions at Praia do Norte.

Nazare’s Viewpoint: Fort de São Miguel Arcanjo

Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, also known as the Fort of Saint Michael the Archangel, is a historical fortress located above the beach (Praia do Norte).

Lisbon to Nazare viewpoint

From its location, you can see the impact of the underwater canyon off the coast.  It produces large waves to the north, and much calmer water to the south.  For 2 Euros, you can go inside the fort, climb around and check out the views of Nazare’s beaches and the ocean waves.

While it’s primarily a viewpoint for the waves and surf competitions these days, it played a role in defending the coastal region throughout history.

Nazare’s fort dates back to the 16th century, and was constructed during the reign of King Manuel in 1577. Its primary purpose was to defend Nazare against pirate attacks and protect the town from maritime threats.

The fort was equipped with canons, and had thick walls to withstand attacks. It served as a watchtower, providing a line of sight for spotting approaching ships.

Surfing Museum

Unexpectedly, Nazare’s fort contains a pretty extensive collection of surfing memorabilia. You’ll also find a lot of scientific information about the natural forces behind the giant waves.

Some of the ancient rooms now hold the surfboards of professionals who’ve conquered Nazare’s waves.  Several have written notes and anecdotes about the waves here, and how they’re different from anywhere else.

The Rocky Caves

You can hike the dirt path down below Nazare’s fort to the beach on the north side.  It’s a steep climb at times, but most people will be able to do it.

At low tide, you’ll find caves in the rocks to explore.  Just beware of the waves as the tide starts to rise!

The adjacent beach is Praia do Norte.

Food in Nazare

At the top of the road that leads down the fort and viewpoint, you’ll find plenty of food options.

Arimar is a restaurant offering floor-to-ceiling window views of the ocean.

For something less-formal, there are a number of food trucks and mobile bars offering meals, snacks, and drinks.

Nazare Food

You’re also bound to find local families selling nuts and cookies and other Portuguese snacks in the plazas around Nazare.

Food near Praia do Norte

The plazas in Nazare are lined with typical souvenir shops.  You’ll also find vendors in trucks selling surfing-specific shirts and gear down closer to the water.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré (Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré)

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, or in Portuguese, Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, is a renowned Catholic pilgrimage site in Nazare, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Church in Nazare, a day trip from Lisbon

The sanctuary’s origins trace back to a miraculous event that occurred in the 12th century. Legend has it that a knight named Dom Fuas Roupinho was hunting in the area when his horse nearly plunged off a cliff. In a moment of desperation, he called upon the Virgin Mary for help, and she saved him. As a result, a small chapel was built on the spot in gratitude, eventually growing into the sanctuary we see today.

It draws pilgrims from around the world.  You’re likely to see tour buses whenever you visit, but each year on September 8th, thousands come for processions and masses.

This is a marble and steel statue, 20 feet tall, built in 2016.

It’s part of the legend from the 12th Century involving the knight who fell off the cliff.  After asking the Virgin Mary for help, the horse stuck its legs down off the cliff, saving the knight’s life.

Veado Statue near the beach in Nazare Portugal

I believe the sculptor created this anthropomorphic statue to represent the old story involving the knight hunting for deer, and Nazare’s modern claim to fame as a surfing Mecca.

The Massive Waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte

Nazare’s Praia do Norte (North Beach) gained global recognition for its massive waves.

These waves are formed due to the underwater Nazaré Canyon, which channels and amplifies the swells, creating some of the largest surfable waves on the planet.

One of the biggest waves at Nazare

In fact, Nazare holds the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, with a height of approximately 24.38 meters (80 feet), ridden by the Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa in 2017.

Why are the waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte so big?

Off-shore, the underwater Nazare Canyon channels and amplifies the swells.

The canyon reaches depths of more than 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). As waves approach the coast, they encounter this underwater topography, which causes the wave energy to concentrate and amplify. The shape and orientation of the canyon channel the incoming swells, resulting in the formation of massive waves.

Another important factor is the convergence of swells from the Atlantic Ocean.

Nazare is uniquely positioned to receive swells generated by storms in the North Atlantic. When these powerful swells travel across the ocean and reach the shallow waters near the coast, they undergo a process called shoaling. As the depth decreases, the energy of the swells is compressed, causing the waves to increase in height and steepness.

You can learn about all of it inside the fort!

When are the big waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte?

The largest waves at Nazare are typically observed during the winter months, particularly between the months of October and February. This is when the combination of powerful Atlantic storms and the unique underwater Nazare Canyon results in the formation of exceptionally large waves.

The specific timing and size of the waves can vary depending on various factors, including weather patterns, swell direction, and tidal influences. To accurately determine the biggest waves at Nazare, it is recommended to monitor surf reports, local forecasts, and updates from professional surfers and oceanographers who closely follow the wave conditions in the area.

How to see the giant waves at Nazare’s Praia do Norte

It’s unpredictable, and if you’re really committed to witnessing the famous Nazare waves, you should plan to stay in the area for several weeks.  Keep monitoring forecasts and webcams, from November through February for your best chances.

The annual WSL Nazaré Big Wave Challenge surfing event is every year during the winter.  The exact dates aren’t chosen or confirmed until 48-hours before the start of the competition.

A surfer died surfing the waves at Nazaré

The 2023 surfing season began with tragedy at Nazare. The famous Brazilian surfer Márcio Freire died after a fall while being towed into a wave.  Rescuers pulled him to shore, but couldn’t revive him.

Tourists have also been pulled from shore by the waves.

Here are some of the safety measures typically in place:

  • Trained lifeguards are often present on the beaches in Nazare, especially during the peak tourist season.
  • Beaches in Nazare usually have clear signage that alerts visitors to the potential risks and dangers associated with the surf conditions.
  • In some areas, there may be safety barriers or buoys installed to mark safe swimming zones and prevent swimmers from venturing into hazardous areas with strong currents or dangerous surf conditions.
  • Local authorities and beach patrols often monitor the beaches to ensure compliance with safety rules, educate visitors about potential risks, and intervene if necessary to enforce safety measures.

Where are the biggest waves in the world?

The biggest wave ever surfed was in Nazare, Portugal.  Here are the other spots to find the biggest waves in the world:

  • Jaws (Peahi), Maui, Hawaii : Located on the north shore of Maui, Jaws is renowned for its massive, powerful waves that can reach heights of up to 60 feet (18 meters).
  • Teahupo’o, Tahiti: Teahupo’o, Tahiti , French Polynesia, is known for its hollow and powerful waves that break over a shallow coral reef.
  • Mavericks, California, United States : Mavericks is located near Half Moon Bay in Northern California and is notorious for its colossal and dangerous waves that can reach heights of over 60 feet (18 meters).
  • Cloudbreak, Tavarua, Fiji : Cloudbreak is a world-class left-hand reef break in the South Pacific that produces powerful and consistent waves. It is known for its thick barrels and can reach heights of up to 20 feet (6 meters).
  • Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii : Waimea Bay is a legendary big wave spot on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It is home to the famous “Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational” surf contest, held only when waves consistently reach a minimum height of 20 feet (6 meters).

Wrap: Is Nazare, Portugal, Worth Visiting?

Admittedly, Nazare wasn’t on my original list of day trips from Lisbon. We only ended up there toward the end because we had some extra time. But I’m glad we did!

I’m not a surfer, but I found the information about Nazare Canyon and the waves really fascinating. The town itself is very pretty, too.

During the summer, I could easily spend a day lounging on the beaches. If you’re just looking to check out the fort and the waves and move on, I’d combine a day trip to Nazare with a stop at nearby Obidos!

We called the service on our confirmation but they said they did not get that order number and did not come. We had to beg other services to get us a car to take us to our hotel. • Aitrus 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best way to see Sintra if you only have one day While planning for our trip, we were originally going to do Sintra by ourselves. Take the train from Lisbon and use the bus to get around there. We had hoped that by getting an early start we could see everything we wanted to get to. However, as our trip neared, we read a number of comments about how busy Sintra is already and it was only expected to get more crowded as the summer goes on. At that point we decided it was probably best to do a guided tour to optimize our time and maximize what we can see in the one day we had to see Sintra. Enter Francisco and Week Break Tours. The day when from potentially hectic and stressful to relaxing and informative. We had already visited Cascais earlier in our trip so Francisco was able to accommodate our request to alter the default trip. We also let him know that we're not opposed to getting an early start if that helps. Below is a brief outline of what we were able to see on our tour. (This review is already pretty long so I chose not to really review the sights themselves, there is plenty of other information available about them specifically) The day started at 8:15 am with Francisco picking up our family of five at the door of our Airbnb in a comfortable van with plenty of space for all five of the family members. With the early start, we were well on our way out of Lisbon before traffic slowed us down. First stop was Pena Palace. To free up time for other sites, we chose not to do the tour inside. Our visit was a perfect blend of guided tour with information and some 'free' time to wander around and take a million pictures. It was a bit foggy for part of our visit but I found it added a little mystic to the palace. Second stop was the Moorish Castle. We walked from Pena Palace to the Moorish Castle and Francisco pointed out various sites along the way. We spent a little time climbing the walls, admiring the views and again... taking a million pictures. After this it was time to drive back to Sintra. Here we had lunch, wandered the streets a bit. After lunch we stopped by a small bakery/coffee shop for a coffee/juice and some pastries. To our surprise it wasn't a pastel de nata, but two other types of traditional pastries which were delicious. Next stop, Quinta da Regaleira. We took a pleasant walk from Sintra to this next palace. We toured both the interior of the palace as well as the magnificent gardens. Once again, a million pictures later and we headed back to town to the van for a drive to our next palace. Final palace of the day was Monserrate Palace. It is much harder to get here and was also a driving factor in getting a guided tour of Sintra. Another stunning garden and palace. The plan was to make one more quick stop at Cabo da Roca and see the western most point of continental Europe. However along the drive there we encountered a traffic jam where a bus and car collided at a sharp turn. Having no other way over the mountain except for an hour plus detour we decided it was time to head back to Lisbon. Return trip back to Lisbon went smoothly and were were dropped back off where we started. There is no way we would have been able to visit all these places without the help of Francisco. We would have lost time figuring out where to go, how to get from place to place and what are the important things to see. In addition, we got so much more out of what we saw by having someone explain the history and significance of so many sights. If you haven't realized by now, I'll make it explicit. If you are looking for a tour in Portugal, give Francisco and Week Break Tours a call. Read more Written July 16, 2022

5. The beautiful 7 Skirts and women of the sea

While at Sítio check out women wearing traditional 7 Skirts. Our guide mentioned that there are different stories surrounding this unique outfit – some say it signifies the 7 waves of the sea, 7 days of the week, the 7 virtues, or the 7 colors of the rainbow.

Nazare 7 Skirts

But our local guide mentioned it is more about keeping warm than anything else. He said that the husbands (of the ladies) go out to sea without any set return date – days turn months, and seasons change, so they keep waiting for them, and these layered skirts would provide warmth.

It is nice to see the ladies around – they are lovely to interact with, and they usually will strike a pose for you 🙂

You can buy edible souvenirs from them!

6. Explore the highlights of Sítio such as the Nossa Senhora da Nazare Basílica

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré stands as a grand testament to an ancient miracle attributed to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.

This venerated Marian shrine is situated on top of O Sítio hill, overlooking Portugal’s Nazaré region, and was established in the 14th century.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré is a pilgrimage site and features an old chapel, several courtyards, chapels, fountains, and a stunning bell tower.

Inside the sanctuary, you will find works from various centuries including sculptures, paintings, and ornaments.

Within the main altar, there is an image of the Virgin Mary of Nazaré, which is believed to be the same one that appeared in a vision during a storm.

Every 8th of September, a colorful and vibrant romaria filled with tourists and pious pilgrims takes place here at the Sanctuary. Revelers enjoy the festivities that include processions, bullfights, and folk dancing for an unforgettable experience!

7. Check out the Chapel of Miracle’s Memory in Sítio

Nazare Central Portugal

Lisbon to Nazaré – What’s the Best way to get to Nazaré?

Nazare is a beautiful beach town around an hour north of Lisbon. Nazaré is a popular beach resort on the Silver Coast of Portugal, but recently became world famous due to its record breaking waves and prominence across the surfing scene.

How To Go To Nazaré By Public Transportation or Car

Due to its proximity to Lisbon, Public transport is widely available, routine and probably the simplest option for a daytrip to Nazaré. There are both frequent buses and several trains which are quite reasonably priced. The choice between bus or train usually comes down to where you are in Lisbon and how flexible you are. First up, we’ll explain the popular bus routes!

Nazare Bus Lisbon

Lisbon to Nazaré by Bus

The quicker of the two methods of public transport are the express bus services operated by Rede Expressos (a Portuguese Operator), by FlixBus (an EU wide low-cost operator), or Rodoviária do Oeste (another local operator).

Rede Expressos and FlixBus services depart from Oriente Bus Station which is on the Red (Vermelha) line. Rodoviária do Oeste’s service departs from Camp Grande’s Bus Terminal. You can reach Campo Grande on the metro by using either the green (Verde) or yellow (Amarela) metro lines from anywhere in the city.

There are multiple services per day starting from around 07:45 until around 19:00 in the evening. It’s really best to check directly with each company to see which bus suits your journey best. Tickets range from €10-20 depending on when they’re booked, both FlixBus and Rede Expressos tickets get more expensive as they get booked up, so it does pay to book in advance.

Rodoviária do Oeste is a more typical bus service operating on a set price of €10.60 each way, tickets can be purchased direct from the driver. The route is called the Rápida Verde and  the full timetable is listed  on the Rodatejo website.

Nazare Bus Service

A Train to Nazaré from Lisbon?

A train is available that gets close to, but not quite all the way to Nazaré so is only practical for a few people. The closest station to Nazaré is called Valado and is around 6km away. Confusingly, the station named Famalicao da Nazare is actually further away at 10km away. If you choose to take the train you will need to seek local transport or a taxi to get you into Nazaré, so although it is possible, it’s not really a practical way of getting there. You also will need to swap trains in Caldas da Rainha, adding somewhat more to the complications. In total, the train takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes and costs €10.50.

That all said, as Nazaré is on the Regional line, is does mean its falls under the newly launched €49 monthly rail ticket. So can be a great way to save money at the cost of around an hour. Or if you’re using the trains between Óbidos, Caldas da  Rainha, and Sao Martinho do Porto. if you do fancy the slower route, the full time tables can be found on the Comboios de Portugal website.

Miradouro Nazare

How about driving to Nazaré?

If you have your own vehicle, or you’ve rented a car. Driving is a very simple option – it’s around an hour and a half on mostly empty toll roads. The most direct route is to take the A8, which should cost around €10 in tolls each way for an average sized car. Steet parking is limited in Nazaré, but there are several underground parking lots!
