Remembering ‘The Midnight Special’

midnight-special-main_thumb

Producer Burt Sugarman pitched NBC on a Friday night musical variety show that would follow the high-rated The  Tonight Show at 1 a.m. and retain some of its audience. The network didn’t bite. So he bought the airtime, found a sponsor (Chevrolet) and on August 19, 1972, premiered the 90-minute program, on which the acts played live, as a special. The pilot episode of The Midnight Special , hosted by John Denver, drew enough viewers for NBC to pick it up. The series ran 450 episodes from February 2, 1973, until May 1, 1981.

That jam-packed pilot episode featured Argent, War, The Everly Brothers, The Isley Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy, David Clayton-Thomas, Cass Elliot and Harry Chapin.

Many subsequent episodes featured former border radio DJ Wolfman Jack as its announcer. Born Robert Weston Smith on January 21, 1938, the “Wolfman” had come to national prominence in George Lucas’ 1973 film American Graffiti .

During its run some of the classic rock acts that appeared included AC/DC, Aerosmith, the Beach Boys, Blondie, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Jim Croce, the Doobie Brothers, Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Frampton, Genesis, Billy Joel, Elton John and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.

Here’s Journey…

Others included Kiss, Van Morrison, Randy Newman, New York Dolls, REO Speedwagon, T. Rex, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Rod Stewart, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Thin Lizzy and Tina Turner.

ABC soon followed suit and debuted In Concert on Friday late night. In September 1973 the syndicated Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert bowed with the Rolling Stones as guests. Throughout the decade it was where many of us first heard and saw what would become our favorite bands.

Watch the Commodores perform “Brick House”

Watch singer Mickey Thomas sing lead vocals on Elvin Bishop’s 1976 hit, “Fooled Around and Fell in Love”

Here’s Fleetwood Mac…

Watch Argent perform their #5 smash “Hold Your Head Up”

Two weeks after “The Joker” topped the Hot 100 in 1974, the Steve Miller Band performed the smash on  The Midnight Special .

And here’s Wild Cherry with the bare-chest and silver jacket look playing “Play That Funky Music”…

Watch Blondie perform “Heart of Glass.” Hey, Debbie, what’s with that outfit?

From the Guess Who’s performance on March 29, 1974, let’s clap for the Wolfman!

The Wolfman died on July 1, 1995.  The Midnight Special collections are available to order here .

Any band of the 70’s was on it. Sweet,Starz,Black Oak Arkansas,Foghat ( they got a “Killer” new release “Under the Influence” Its Smokin’ hot !! Knock it Off sounds like Bon Scott AC/DC era song, Hot Mama like a Stone Blue era song,a burnin’ Heard it Through the Grapevine !! )

mpasqua

While there were many noteworthy acts on the Midnight Special, I always thought ABC “In Concert” had the cooler bands performing. Everything from the Allman Brothers to Poco. A shame that you can’t get those performances on dvd or blu ray

Jack

I agree with you. I used to watch both shows, but it was “In Concert” that definitely had the bands that had an “edge” to them. I remember they did a multi-show series on “The California Jam”, when I 13yrs old. It was a monumental exposure to live R&R in the span of 4-5 weeks. That was where I was first introduced to Rare Earth, The Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and a band that I would go on to be a gigantic fan of to this day, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

Midnight Special was a little more “pop”, however, I do thank them for an introduction to David Bowie, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, and especially, Fleetwood Mac. Both shows did provide good musical entertainment to an age group that had very, very, few options for exposure to R&R.

It’s too bad there are not shows like that on now. Austin City Limits is pretty good, but it’s not “In Concert”.

Ed Sullivan

You are correct. The first “In Concert” with Alice Cooper was monumental! I might still have a tape recording I made of it.

Moogly

I really hope all these shows have existing tapes. They can all be released on DVD eventually.

DUKE

I MET HIM IN FLORIDA….AT A NEW (THEN) NIGHTCLUB CALLED WOLFMAN JACK’S JUKEBOX….I ASKED HIM ABOUT SOME ROCK TRIVIA AND HE COULD NOT ANSWER THEM….HE HAD A POPULAR SHOW…AND A GIMMICK VOICE AND HOWL…BUT DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE MUSIC HE WAS PLAYING

Jaz

So many times, l have to wonder whether the Moody Blues performed on these programs and then, I found out, yes they were. They never lowered their standards, or changed their vision to fit what was the flavour of the month and I respect them for that.

It’s also what gave them staying power, because they drew a faithful audience that felt the same.

I love going to the Concerts. I look at the audience filling the venue and I feel like I’ve come home.

The people who come to their shows are three generations now each as excited as the other.

I’ve seen 1st time Concert goers at the shows and l know exactly what they’re feeling, because I felt it too the 1st time. It’s hard to put into words all of the emotions that they fill you with, but you’ll find out when you start relating their songs to your life.

They are so much more than one song, “Nights in White Satin”, so make “Question” your anthem and you’ll have a GREAT RIDE!

THANK YOU MOODY BLUES!

SteveM

Great acts.TERRIBLE hosts

Joe Coffee

Occasionally, some respected acts who never had a hit would materialize. I recall seeing Paul Butterfield’s Better Days and Weather Report (possibly on the same show), as well as Ry Cooder performing ‘Diddy Wah Ditty’ solo. The Little Feat-hosted episode is floating around the internets, but I’d like to like to see the aforementioned surface as well.

TyStick

The “Midnight Special” was a great time for me. I remember trying to stay awake to be with my older brothers while they watched their favorite bands. They had some classics like the Stones, Linda Ronstadt, Bay City Rollers (who were my favorite band as a 11 year old), Foghat etc. A great time for music and to this day, I love the 60 & 70s rock.

Big John Milner

Correction: Wolfman Jack did NOT host the first episode of The Midnight Special, John Denver did (and also performed, including a duet of “Leaving on a Jet Plane” with Cass Elliot!). As the article points out, “American Graffiti” was released one year after The Midnight Special’s debut.

Also, the first show and those after it were not aired live. It was pre-recorded. You can tell when you watch the video that was just posted to You Tube a few days ago.

Greg Brodsky

Thanks to reader “Big John Milner”… We’ve made the correction about that pilot episode.

Safari Bob Grilli

Live! Live! Live! These guys could play, wanted to play and did play – LIVE! The musicianship and presentation of their songs shows that these bands came from a lost era when you rehearsed your ass off, played a thousand gigs, and were lucky enough AND good enough to get a chance to show it. I watch in on Youtube.

Crazy On You: Watch Heart's explosive television debut on The Midnight Special in 1977

Witness Ann and Nancy Willson in electrifying form as Heart take to The Midnight Special stage in March 1977

Anne and Nancy Wilson on The Midnight Special

As American TV viewers sat down to watch long-running music show The Midnight Special on March 4, 1977, they were about to watch something no television viewer had ever seen before: a group of rising stars from Seattle called Heart .

The band's debut album Dreamboat Annie had been released in August 1975 by Canadian label Mushroom – the band were based in Vancouver, BC during their early years – but it was a slow burner: it took a full year to enter the Canadian charts, and wouldn't reach the US chart until October 1976.

By the time Heart's first TV show was booked, album number two was about to come out. Little Queen would arrive in May 1977 (although Mushroom trumped it with an unfinished second album, Magazine , the previous month), but their Midnight Special set would only feature songs from their debut. After an awkward introduction from host Harry “KC” Casey of KC and the Sunshine Band, the band played Magic Man , Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child) , Crazy On You and White Lightning And Wine.

High quality footage of Crazy On You – originally released as Heart's debut US single in March 1976 – has just been made available on The Midnight Special 's increasingly vital YouTube channel, and it finds the band in blistering form from the very first moments, as guitarist Nancy Wilson plays the song's familiar acoustic intro.

“I wanted to write an acoustic guitar intro before the song started,” Wilson told Classic Rock . “So I sat for a few days, just trying to channel that first bar. I wanted it to be really memorable. It was the hardest part, finding a way in. But now, every time I play the introduction, everyone recognises it right away."

The main part of the song kicks into life, with singer Ann Wilson's vocal sounding a little thin despite clearly firing in all cylinders – you can blame the TV mix for that – and the rest of the band (guitarist Roger Fisher, guitarist/keyboardist Howard Leese, bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael Derosier) are similarly on point. Fisher adds some real fire to the performance, and appears to have come to the party dressed as Luke Skywalker (perplexingly, Star Wars wasn't released until two months later).

We don't know if fellow guests Jose Feliciano and Gordon Lightfoot exchanged acoustic guitar tips with the younger Wilson sister, but older sister Ann has continued to sing Crazy On You with the same commitment she showed on The Midnight Special .

"After many renditions, it’s still satisfying because there’s no bullshit in that song," she told Classic Rock . "The words still resonate because I still feel the same way about the world. The song gave a lot of people hope, because they would look at the challenges and difficult things in their lives and think, ‘The world is really screwed up but I have this person who loves me,’ and that’s what the song is really all about."

Flashback: Heart Play a Blazing ‘Crazy on You’ on ‘The Midnight Special’ in 1977

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Just when it seemed like Ann and Nancy Wilson had finally put their differences aside for the good of their fans, their legacy, and their family, news erupted this week that the Heart civil war is back on. The situation is so dire that a new group called Nancy Wilson’s Heart has been formed where the the guitarist will perform the group’s classic catalog with vocalist Kimberly Nichole.

“I can telegraph to the people coming to the show that they’re gonna hear Heart songs in a whole different way than ever expected,” Nancy Wilson told New York DJ Joe Rock on 102.3 WBAB. “No comparison to Ann singing or Kimberly singing those same songs, just because it’s apples and oranges; you can’t compare that stuff. So I figure [the new band name is] a way to let them know that it’s not just Nancy Wilson of Heart doing whatever, but it’s Nancy Wilson’s Heart where you’re gonna hear more Heart stuff.”

According to Nancy Wilson, Heart had a “big offer” to tour last year. The only reason it didn’t happen was because the sisters couldn’t agree on which members to bring along as their backing band. “Ann wasn’t interested in going out with my lineup of guys that we were out with before,” she said. “She has a new lineup of guys that she wanted me to join up with. And I sort of [thought] I don’t really know them and don’t have loyalty yet for anybody like that. So I just kind of shined it on and decided [to] go out with my new singer Kimberly.”

Heart previously broke down in 2016 when Ann’s husband Dean Wetter was arrested after a violent incident involving Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. They reassembled in 2019 for a successful summer tour with Sheryl Crow, Joan Jett, and Brandi Carlile. It’ll be very sad if that progress is reversed simply because they can’t agree on who should play in their backing band. With all due respect to those fine musicians, none of them were around during the glory days of Heart in the Seventies and Eighties. Fans come to Heart gigs to see Ann and Nancy Wilson. Very few of them care who is on bass, drums, or keyboards.

For a look at Heart in happier days, here’s a video of them playing “Crazy on You” on The Midnight Special in 1977. This was Heart at their Seventies peak. In the aftermath, the non-Wilson members left one at a time. Keyboardist Howard Leese was the last to depart when he left in 1998. They were way past their hitmaking period at this point, but their live show remained stellar.

Kimberly Nichole is a fantastic singer, and she hopefully has a long and bright future in the industry, but Ann is the vocalist Heart fans want to see delivering the classics next to Nancy. Those two have gotten over some pretty bad situations in the past. Let’s hope they find a way to resolve this one soon.

A performance by ABBA on Midnight Special of their timeless 1976 hit “Dancing Queen” is now available to view on the official YouTube channel of the erstwhile live performance series.

The Swedish stars were on the February 7, 1977 edition of the show, as the song continued its lengthy chart expedition en route to becoming the group’s only US No.1 . “Dancing Queen” finally completed that lengthy mission on the April 9 survey, taking over at the top from Daryl Hall and John Oates’ “Rich Girl” for a week, before being succeeded by David Soul’s “Don’t Give Up On Us.”

Dancing Queen - Abba | The Midnight Special

Indeed, the support of Midnight Special was one of the important factors in the track’s American conquest, as it was featured on the show no fewer than four times. On this February edition, which was guest-hosted by Glen Campbell , ABBA performed it, as well as “Fernando,” in an appearance pre-filmed specially for the show in California. As it aired, they were in the early days of their European tour of 1977.

The line-up featured Campbell himself singing “Southern Nights,” “Sunflower,” “For Cryin’ Out Loud,” “This Is (Sarah’s Song),” “God Only Knows,” and “Early Morning Song.” The great country-pop figurehead also appeared on “Dust on My Saddle” with Seals and Crofts, who added their own “Goodbye Old Buddies” and “Cause You Love.”

Queen were on this edition with the video of “Somebody To Love,” and other contributors included David Dundas and Sly and the Family Stone, alongside a salute to the Spinners and a clip from the new movie version of A Star Is Born , released just before Christmas 1976 and starring Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand.

“Dancing Queen” was then featured again on the Midnight Special editions of March 4, hosted by KC and the Sunshine Band; April 8 (Gabe Kaplan); and May 13 (Wolfman Jack), by which time ABBA’s US invasion was complete.

Buy or stream “Dancing Queen” on ABBA’s Arrival  album.
