Military honor quotes, table of contents, honoring our heroes: understanding and appreciating military service, discover the power of words: navigating the world of military honor quotes, 50 military honor quotes, 50 unique military honor quotes, to conclude.

The hustle and bustle of life often make us overlook the noble service of our men and women in uniform. You’re standing in the middle of a busy crowd, perhaps waiting for a bus or ordering your morning coffee, and you notice someone walk by in a military uniform. Your heart swells with respect, appreciation, and a desire to convey your sentiments. But how do you articulate your immense admiration for their service? It’s difficult to find the right words to encapsulate all you feel.

In this sea of civilian life, soldiers stand out, embodying virtues like honor, courage, and sacrifice. It’s these virtues that we wish to celebrate and acknowledge. As Divya, your personal life coach, and an experienced author and philosopher, I’m here to guide you to express your gratitude effectively.

In our quest to pay tribute, we often find solace in quotes , a powerful amalgamation of words that have the potential to convey profound respect. Here are some military honor quotes that will resonate with the soldiers’ spirit and resonate with your own.

“There is a certain enthusiasm in liberty, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” – Alexander Hamilton

“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” – Hercules

These quotes honor the bravery and heart of our military men and women, capturing the essence of their service. Expressing gratitude doesn’t necessarily require grand gestures. Sometimes, a well-chosen quote can show your understanding and appreciation of their sacrifice. It’s a simple way for you, despite your busy life, to show your respect.

In conclusion, honoring our military personnel can be as simple as recognizing their service and expressing your gratitude, even with a heartfelt quote. Their duty is monumental, and our appreciation should be as well. Let’s take a moment to remember their sacrifice and echo their bravery in our daily lives. As the wise John F. Kennedy once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

By incorporating these quotes and the sentiments behind them in your daily interactions, you’ll be actively honoring our military heroes. Our recognition of their sacrifice is a token of our gratitude, a small beacon of respect amidst the chaos of life.

Remember, as you scramble to catch that bus or order your coffee, take a moment to acknowledge the men and women in uniform, whether through a nod, a thank you, or a carefully chosen quote. After all, their service guarantees the freedom we enjoy every day .

Navigating the World of Military Honor Quotes

Are you one of those who often find themselves at a loss for words when trying to express gratitude and respect for our soldiers? It’s a challenge many face, and it’s okay. You’re not alone! The struggle to find military honor quotes that truly capture the essence of a soldier’s bravery, sacrifice, and honor is a common one.

One of the most frequent challenges is the overwhelming amount of content available . We live in a digital era where information is abundant, and navigating through it can feel like wandering through a dense forest. It’s easy to feel lost and unsure where to look. So many websites, so many quotes! How do you find the right one?

Another common obstacle is finding a quote that resonates on a personal level . A quote that mirrors your thoughts, feelings, and emotions towards our men and women in uniform. You’re looking for a powerful string of words that not only you can connect with but can also reflect the depth of a soldier’s service.

Not forgetting the struggle to find a relevant and authentic quote . You might worry about the credibility of the source, the context in which it was said, or if it’s indeed related to military honor.

Does this sound familiar? But don’t fret! As Divya, your personal life coach, and an experienced author and philosopher, I’m here to guide you to navigate the maze and find the military honor quotes that resonate with your feelings and express your deep respect for our military personnel.

Finding the perfect military honor quotes doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Embrace the challenge and turn it into a quest to understand and appreciate the ethos of the military. Remember, your effort to find the right words is a tribute in itself, an homage to the soldiers who have devoted their lives to safeguard our freedom.

As a next step, take a deep breath and dive into the sea of words, confident that you’re well-equipped to discern the quotes that will help you express your gratitude. The right words can illuminate the path for others, inspiring them to join you in honoring our military heroes. Remember, as George S. Patton said, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.” So let’s embark on this journey together, cherishing and honoring the legacy of our brave soldiers.

Space-available travel is excellent when it works: it’s a free seat on a military aircraft that’s headed to the same place you’re going (or close to it). However, Space-A seats are increasingly hard to come by.

You may have to wait a few days for a seat – if you get one at all. You should only travel Space-A if you’ve got a flexible schedule and a backup plan (which may include purchasing a last-minute airline ticket).

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, active-duty service members, National Guardsmen, reservists, retirees and dependents of these groups are eligible to travel Space-A.

Visit the AMC Travel Site or contact the nearest military passenger terminal to learn more about Space-A opportunities near you.

AMC’s Space-A Travel Handbook

Most hotel chains will offer military discounts , provided there isn’t a significant event on the calendar. For example, you may be hard-pressed to get a military discount at a hotel in New York City on New Year’s Eve.

Many hotel chains are also willing to cap their rates at the local per diem rate, which can amount to substantial savings, depending on the hotel chain and location. Rates capped at the per diem rate may require official orders, and almost always require active-duty, reserve or National Guard identification.

I would never recommended Hotels.com. I cancelled reservations with this broker back in Feb of 2021. And they still have not sent me my money back. I have spoken to two of their representatives and finally I just wrote them a letter. We will see how long it takes them to send me my money back. Be very careful with Hotels.com they have unresonable terms and conditions. If you do not read the small print they will refuse to reimburse you.

Respectfully,

Manuel Gonzalez.

Hello Manuel, Try contacting your credit card company and reversing the charges. That may work in your favor. As for Hotels.com, I’ve used them for years and I haven’t had any issues. So this may be a one-off situation. Best wishes with your situation.

My brother is an Air force retiree and has 100% disability. Uses walker. He is wanting to visit his son in Columbia, South Carolina July 14 to 21st unaccompanied. He needs the best money wise and direct flight with assistance for him to the destinations. Can you help us???

July 6, 2021 at 11:48 am

Hello Wanda,

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, I don’t have the information necessary to answer your question. I recommend looking at the available airlines at both the departure and destination airports to see which airlines might have the best options available for him. You may also try contacting a travel agent to see if they can assist you.

Best wishes!

I thought that Space-A was available to 100% DV’s and also base hotels. Is that true

December 11, 2020 at 2:34 pm

Hello David, yes, Space-A travel is available to 100% disabled veterans, within certain restrictions. However, it only covers the veteran and not his or her dependents. You would need to check with the closest Space-A terminal for information about current policies. Base lodging is also available to 100% disabled veterans, also on a space-available basis. YOu would need to work with the base lodging office to determine availability.

Those military discounts don’t apply to veterans who live in Puerto Rico. Then again they treat the common wealth like a redheaded stepchild.

Hi Ryan and everyone else,

I run a small company in Paris called Blue Fox Travel. We lead bike tours and skip-the-line tours inside Paris. We also visit the French countryside in 8 seater minibuses. I am in the process of putting together a Military and Veterans Discount on our website. (Three of my brothers are Vets.)

It will be available for all of our tours and Day Trips from Paris. I thought that it might be especially interesting to those of you who are interested in visiting any of the following places with us: The battle sights of Bealleau Wood (WWI) where the Marines got their Devil Dog nickname, The trenches in the Somme, and the D-Day Beaches of Normandy. We offer full day excursions visits to all of these places.

I am in the process of creating a 25% discount for all Active Duty and Military Veterans. Being an American myself this just seemed like something I should do for those who have served and are still serving in the US Military.

My company is called: Blue Fox Travel

For now, you are all welcome to send me an email directly and I will make the 25% discount happen for you. Within a month the discount should be online on our website.

A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.

If you currently serve, or have served, in the U.S. armed forces and are planning a vacation, did you know that you have access to travel insurance benefits through USAA?

Founded in 1922 by a group of U.S. Army officers, USAA is a well-established Fortune 500 company with more than 13 million members as of 2020. USAA offers financial products including banking, investing and insurance to people and families who serve or have served in the U.S. military.

When you become a member of USAA (which is free if you qualify), you have access to various benefits, products and discounts, including travel insurance, which can help protect you and your nonrefundable plans if something derails your vacation. USAA’s trip insurance plans are administered by Travel Insured International , a company with over 25 years in the industry.

Here’s a look at various travel insurance options offered by USAA to help you decide if the policies are right for you.

What travel insurance plans does USAA offer?

USAA offers single-trip plans. Coverage begins when you purchase a policy and ends when you return home from your trip.

Because you have to be a member to view USAA plans, NerdWallet reached out to a USAA representative with two sample trips: a two-week trip to Italy by a 40-year-old from Hawaii ($5,000 estimated cost) and a one-week trip to Mexico by a 60-year-old from Nebraska ($3,000 estimated cost).

For both trips, we received three travel insurance plan options to choose from:

Worldwide Trip Protector, which also offers Cancel For Any Reason, or CFAR, as an optional add-on.

Worldwide Trip Protector Lite.

Travel Medical Protector.

It's important to note that travel insurance policies depend on your state of residency; your USAA travel insurance plan options may differ from above if you live in another state.

USAA travel insurance cost

The total cost for coverage typically varies based on your total trip cost and your age. Generally, USAA's Travel Medical Protector plans are more affordable than its other options. This difference in price is due to benefits and limits offered in each of the plans (more on this next).

How much does USAA travel insurance cost? Here's how it breaks down between our two sample itineraries.

Trip 1: $5,000, two-week trip to Italy by a 40-year-old from Hawaii

Trip 2: $3,000, one-week trip to mexico by a 60-year-old from nebraska.

About USAA's travel insurance benefits

Below is the list of benefits offered broken down by plan, along with the limits.

If you already have a premium travel credit card and you’re satisfied with the travel insurance limits, you may be fine with just getting the Travel Medical Protector plan. But if the limits offered on your credit card are insufficient or you don't have a credit card that provides travel insurance, the Worldwide Trip Protector Lite or Worldwide Trip Protector plans are solid options.

Worldwide Trip Protector Lite benefits

The Worldwide Trip Protector Lite plan offers basic coverage, but still provides benefits like 100% trip cancellation and 100% trip interruption , $300 trip delay, $100,000 in medical evacuation and $10,000 for medical expenses, among other benefits. The maximum trip length is 30 days.

This plan also offers some add-on options including car rental damage, Cancel For Work Reason and optional flight accident. The Cancel for Work Reason add-on would allow you to cancel a trip for a work-related reason as long as the cancellation meets the guidelines set in the policy.

Worldwide Trip Protector benefits

The Worldwide Trip Protector plan is more comprehensive, with 100% trip cancellation, 150% trip interruption, $1,500 trip delay, $1 million in medical evacuation, $100,000 for medical expenses and many other benefits. The maximum trip length is 180 days.

This plan also offers a host of add-ons to choose from including CFAR coverage, rental car damage, electronic equipment and many others.

CFAR lets you cancel a trip for any reason whatsoever and receive up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back (as long as you cancel within 48 hours before departure and you add all of your travel arrangements to your trip within 21 days of the initial payment). If you’re worried that something may derail your nonrefundable trip, CFAR is a good option to have because of its flexibility.

Optional electronic equipment provides up to $2,000 to replace your owned or leased cell phone, laptop or other equipment if it is stolen, lost or damaged while you’re vacationing.

If you want high limits and the ability to add many a la carte benefits to your travel insurance policy, the Worldwide Trip Protector Plus is the plan to go with. However, if you’re just looking for basic coverage and some add-on options, consider the Worldwide Trip Protector Lite plan.

Travel Medical Protector benefits

The Travel Medical Protector plan is designed to offer medical coverage when you’re traveling outside the U.S. The benefits are mainly focused on medical care, with $50,000 for medical expenses, $1 million for medical evacuation and repatriation, $150,000 for nonmedical evacuation, $5,000 for trip interruption and $1,000 coverage for delays.

» Learn more: Travel medical insurance: Emergency coverage while you travel internationally

If you don’t need pre-departure trip cancellation coverage and are mainly concerned about unexpected medical emergencies, this is a good plan to consider. Additionally, if you hold a premium travel card that offers trip cancellation insurance (like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ) and the limits are adequate, a standalone medical plan might be the most cost-effective option.

The Cancel For Any Reason supplement is offered only on the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, so if you’re looking for this benefit, that’s the plan you’ll want to go with.

What’s not covered by USAA travel insurance

Although travel insurance covers many events, not everything will be covered, including:

Fear of travel. Wanting to cancel a trip because circumstances have changed and you’re now scared to travel will not qualify as a covered reason. If you’d like the option to cancel your trip for any reason whatsoever, you’ll need to purchase the CFAR supplement, which you can add to your Worldwide Trip Protector policy.

Specific events. General exclusions not usually covered by insurers won't be covered here either. Example events include self-harm, war, participating in dangerous activities (e.g., skydiving), committing a felony or getting into an accident while intoxicated. You’ll need to review the policy's fine print to know exactly what is and isn’t covered.

How to get a USAA travel insurance plan

If you’re currently serving or have served in the U.S. military, joining USAA could offer some money-saving benefits, including travel insurance. Since USAA travel insurance plans are available only to members, you will need to purchase a USAA membership before seeing plan options. Then log in to your member portal to see plan quotes.

If you have any questions, reach out to USAA at 800-531-8722.

Determine if your quotes are a good deal

One way to check if USAA travel insurance is the best value is to compare your USAA quotes to those listed on an insurance comparison site like Squaremouth . To see what other plan options are available, input your trip details and cross-reference the cost and coverage of those plans to what you’re seeing with USAA.

» Learn more: The best credit cards for travel insurance benefits

USAA travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, medical evacuation and repatriation, and medical expense coverage, among many other benefits. There are several plans to choose from including a plan that is focused on medical coverage when traveling outside the U.S.

You must be a USAA member to purchase a travel insurance policy from USAA. Those eligible for membership include those who serve or have served in the U.S. military along with their family members.

The Cancel For Any Reason supplement is available only on the Worldwide Trip Protector plan, which is the most comprehensive travel insurance plan offered by USAA.

Going on a trip without any travel insurance is a risky move because if something derails your trip or you experience a medical emergency, you may lose your nonrefundable deposit and incur high medical costs. Even if you’re a USAA member, it's still advisable to do a price comparison of different travel insurance options to make sure that you’re getting the most value when choosing a policy.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving classic starring Steve Martin and the late great John Candy . The story follows a man trying to get home for Thanksgiving dinner, but he is delayed by the weather and the lovable but chatty Del Griffith (Candy). The two team up to get Neal (Martin) home, employing the services of every method of transportation a person could think of. Along the way, however, it seems that everything that can go wrong for the duo does.

“Y’know, The Finest Line A Man’ll Walk Is Between Success At Work And Success At Home. I Got A Motto – Like Your Work, Love Your Wife.”

Del griffith.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is, in a lot of ways, a movie about marriage, with Neal Page behaving in all manner of unpleasant ways while justifying it to himself through his love for his wife and family, and his desire to get home to them. Neal loves his wife, but does he truly appreciate her?

I got a motto – like your work, love your wife.

Del reveals himself at the end of the movie as a kind of Ghost of Christmas Future for Neal. Del lived a life on the road and now the road is all he has. There's no home to go back to. It gives Del this painfully real insight that comes off as sweet and maybe even a little naive when his motto is heard early on in the film, with the words taking on more meaning by the end once the audience knows the truth of Del's life.

“Please. Have Mercy. I’ve Been Wearing The Same Underwear Since Tuesday.”

At the pair's lowest moment, Del and Neal need to get a room for the night as the car they rented is now mostly destroyed, and the temperature is getting even lower than usual on their icy journey.

With very little money left, Neal is forced to beg and barter in order to get a room, eventually trading his watch but not before making this hilarious plea to the motel receptionist with an incredibly relatable Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote for anyone who has had travel troubles.

“Oh, He’s Drunk. How Would He Know Where We’re Going?”

In one of the movie's most memorable sequences, Del gets turned around while on the highway and ends up driving the wrong way. When some onlookers try to tell the oblivious Del and Neal, Del interprets their warning as a suggestion that they're heading away from their destination and not that they're on the wrong side of the highway.

Del simply thinks that the other driver and their passenger must be drunk and want to race, brushing them off and driving straight towards two trucks. This results in the iconic moment where Del suddenly looks like the devil to Neal as they narrowly escape a crushing death.

“This Is Czechoslovakian Ivory.”

When Del and Neal arrive in St. Louis, they're pretty strapped for cash and running low on transportation options. Del makes some quick money by selling his shower curtain rings to passersby, advertising them as various humorously fake items.

Aside from linking them to celebrities like Walter Kronkite and Diane Sawyer, Del sells some shower curtain rings as " Czechoslovakian ivory ", which the master salesman gets just to roll off his tongue. Throughout the scenes that follow, viewers will notice quite a few people using the shower curtain rings for surprising uses - including as earrings.

“Larry Bird Doesn’t Do As Much Ball-Handling In One Night As You Do In An Hour.”

After already getting into a pretty serious argument about the habits of the other, Del and Neal start to dig into each other again in their rented car with Del prepared to critique Neal more effectively this time around.

Del points out that Neal has a habit of handling his groin by making this comparison to the skills of basketball legend Larry Bird, flipping the tables on the much more eloquent Neal and leaving him a little lost for words.

"Well, Let Me Just Close This Conversation By Saying You Are One Unique Individual."

Neal may have a short temper at times, but he certainly hasn't encountered someone like Del before. Their drunken banter is hilarious as the two share tequila and Doritos, and as they settle down for the night, Neal throws him a compliment.

Unique is the right word to describe Del. The audience never knows what will come next for the two. But the audience does know that Del will deal with it with an optimistic attitude, unlike Neal's pessimistic view. Opposites do attract.

"Four F****** Wheels And A Seat!"

Not only is this arguably the funniest scene from the movie but it's generally considered to be the most iconic of the Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quotes too. Steve Martin's performance in this scene alone is often remembered as one of his greatest screen performances , his rant is simply hilarious and convincing considering all he's been through just to get home for Thanksgiving.

You can start by wiping that f****** dumb-ass smile off your rosy f****** cheeks. Then you can give me a f****** automobile. A f****** Datsun. A f****** Toyota. A f****** Mustang. A f****** Buick! Four f****** wheels and a seat!

At this point, it doesn't matter what type of car or method of transportation, poor Neal just wants a way out of the madness that has ensued over the past few days.

"Those Aren't Pillows!"

Two strangers met at an airport and agreed to share a room for the night because of a blizzard, with one bed. What could go wrong? Everything gets too personal with Neal waking up to find Del's hand between "two pillows".

Considering the argument the two had the night before, this was not the morning the two expected to have and their bluster as they attempt to brush the moment off is ultimately charming. It's easily one of the funniest quotes in Planes, Trains and Automobiles .

"If I Wanted A Joke, I'd Follow You Into The John And Watch You Take A Leak."

By this point in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles , Neal has no filter and doesn't care for niceties with strangers. When someone advises Neal to travel by plane instead of a car, he responds a little too harshly.

The last time Neal was on a plane he was met with the same fake hospitality and kicked to the back of the plane. Neal learned his lesson here and was picked up by his groin as a result and thrown into the road.

"Six Bucks And My Right Nut Says We're Not Landing In Chicago."

Travel delays are inevitable at airports. Airlines are at the mercy of the weather as impending storms can keep flyers where they are for days. On their descent to what is Wichita rather than Chicago, Del realizes they have a long way to go to get home.

But what's great about this Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote is how relatable it is. Millions of people face this situation, especially during the holidays when the winter weather settles in.

"Was That Seat Hot Or What? I Feel Like A Big Whopper. Turn Me Over, I'm Done On This Side."

The vehicle may not have been fit for highway travel, but it certainly kept the two of them warm. Did a car fire stop the two from getting home? Of course not, and the two were left with a few laughs and some griddle marks on their backs from their seats.

Despite the ups and downs of the journey, the two can share a few laughs at how crazy things got.

"How Am I Supposed To Go With The Flow..."

This sums Neal's troubles up in one Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote. Del is a "charmed man" whose inside information on all the hotels, motels and diners gives him an edge Neal doesn't have. When Del tells him to go with the flow, he can't possibly wrap his head around doing so.

How am I supposed to go with the flow when the rental car agency leaves me in a 100-acre parking lot with keys to a car that isn't there then I have to hike back 3 miles back to find out they don't have any more cars?

Not only that, but it speaks to the unpredictability of holiday traveling. People want the impossible when they're at the mercy of Mother Nature. There's nothing more frustrating for a traveler like Neal than nothing being in their control.

RELATED: 10 Fun Behind The Scenes Facts About Planes, Trains And Automobiles

"I Like... I Like Me. My Wife Likes Me. My Customers Like Me. 'Cause I'm The Real Article. What You See Is What You Get."

Arguably the most iconic, heart-wrenching dialogue exchange in the movie (aside from the ending) as Neal tears into Del. But despite Del's flaws, he knows what he is and what he isn't. He's a genuine person whose only problem is being too nice. It's not too often a person like Del meets a guy like Neal.

When they do, the two personalities are bound to clash, it's inevitable. Neal's words hurt, but Del doesn't let them get him down, even if there's an unavoidable tinge of sadness behind them that Neal only comes to notice in hindsight.

"I Don't Have A Home. Marie's Been Dead For 8 Years."

One of the reasons why Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is often spoken about is its twist ending. Not an M. Night Shyamalan twist , but one that opened America's eyes to an ongoing problem not many were too comfortable to talk about – homelessness.

Del Griffith had been living on the road for years because there was nowhere else to go. This particular Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quote was a genuine surprise for the audience that brought the humor of the movie down to earth. Audiences didn't see this coming but were glad to see Del on his way home with Neal for Thanksgiving Dinner with something he's missed for 8 years: family.

"When Am I Ever Gonna Wake Up? I Wish You Were Here With Me Right Now. But I Guess That's Not Gonna Happen. Not Now, Anyway."

This scene is often overlooked when compared to the others, but it possesses a rather grim moment for a key character. Del is left sitting in the broken car with no protection from the blizzard outside.

He's left to his thoughts, thinking about his flaws, insecurities, and his wife. At the end of the scene, Del closes his eyes as if to go to sleep. This is the real low point of the movie before Neal opens the door to his room and invites Del in, rekindling a spark of friendship between the two. It's these moments of pathos combined with all the humor that makes Planes, Trains, and Automobiles quotes so memorable and the movie so beloved.

He is a speaker, poet and activist.

  • “ I wish they would stop saying I am amazing or inspiring when I do ordinary things. ” — Arielle Silverman

  • “People should stop automatically assuming that we are brave for dealing with our disabilities. People should stop considering us vulnerable people who cannot work and contribute to our community.” — Sean Pevsner
  • “I wish they would stop making fun of and looking down on people with disabilities. I also wish they would stop treating people with disabilities like children . Often time, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are treated like children. They’re not - they’re adults.” — Melody Cooper, 54, has cerebral palsy and intellectual disability. She is self-advocate specialist at The Arc of Indiana .
  • “One thing that I wish people would stop assuming is that people who experience disability are living off the government . This is not the case at all. We need the assistance to live a normal life like everyone else in the world and we are trying to make something for ourselves with the support we have provided to us.” — Ric Nelson, 40, has cerebral palsy. He is an executive director of Peer Power .

i wish they would stop saying i am amazing or inspiring when i do ordinary things, arielle silverman

What's a misconception people have about you and your abilities?

  • “ There are Deaf people in almost every profession. Don’t assume because a person cannot hear that they are incapable. Not everyone lip reads and we do not have better sight to make up for not being able to hear . We enjoy music, we drive. The biggest barriers we face are attitudes.” —Sheryl Emery
  • “ The biggest misconception is they're underestimating me and the 61 million others like me - this comes from a long history of devaluing people like me.” —Theo W. Braddy

Minister Blair announces additional military assistance for Ukraine at the 21 st meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group

From: National Defence

News release

Today, the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, participated in the 21st Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting, hosted by United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III. The meeting was held virtually on the two-year anniversary of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and brought together representatives from more than 50 countries.

April 26, 2024 – Toronto, Ontario – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Today, the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, participated in the 21 st Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting, hosted by United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III. The meeting was held virtually on the two-year anniversary of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and brought together representatives from more than 50 countries.

At today’s meeting, Minister Blair announced that Canada is donating $3 million to Ukraine for the production of drones by Ukraine’s domestic defence industry. This marks the first time that Canada is contributing directly to the production of military drones in Ukraine, and this donation will be made in collaboration with the United Kingdom.

Minister Blair also confirmed that Canada is providing an additional contribution of approximately $13 million to Czechia’s initiative to procure and deliver large-calibre ammunition for Ukraine. This contribution comes in addition to last month’s announcement of $40 million and brings Canada’s total contribution to the Czech initiative to over $53 million.

In addition, Minister Blair noted that Canada’s donation of drones from Teledyne FLIR in Waterloo, Ontario, announced in February 2024 , will grow by an additional 100 drones – bringing our total contribution of SkyRanger drones to 900. Delivery of these drones will begin in May.

These donations are funded by the $500 million military assistance package that Prime Minister Trudeau announced in Kyiv on June 12, 2023.[DM1] [AV2]

Minister Blair also provided updates on the delivery of other donations:

  • The first 10 of 50 Armoured Combat Support Vehicles that Canada will donate to Ukraine will be delivered to Europe this summer. Ukrainians will be trained on the vehicles in the summer, and the vehicles will move to Ukraine in the fall. These vehicles are built by Canadian workers at General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada in London, Ontario.
  • The 10 Multirole Boats from Zodiac Hurricane Technologies committed in January are set to be delivered this July, including the provision of commercially contracted training for Ukrainian operators, as well as trailers and spare parts; and
  •  As announced earlier this year, Canada has been contributing to Ukraine’s F-16 fighter capability by providing training since February 2024. Canada is providing civilian instructors, planes, and support staff contracted from Montreal-based Top Aces Inc. to support pilot and maintenance personnel training [AV3] [SW4]  for Ukraine’s incoming F-16 fleet, under the auspices of the Air Force Capability Coalition. In addition, Canada is providing language training to 14 Ukrainian air force members at the Canadian Forces language school in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

Canada’s military assistance to Ukraine demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing Ukrainians with the military aid that they need in their fight against Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable war. As indicated in the Agreement on security cooperation between Canada and Ukraine , Canada will continue to support Ukraine for the long-term.

“Ukrainians have been relentless in their fight for freedom, democracy, and the rules-based international order that keeps us all safe. On the two-year anniversary of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Canada reaffirms that it will stand with Ukraine for as long as victory takes.” -        The Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence

Quick facts

The UDCG was created by the United States Secretary of Defense in April 2022 to allow Allies and partners to synchronize donations, consult, and coordinate military assistance to Ukraine, and build the capabilities of the AFU. Convening monthly at the ministerial level, the UDCG now brings together more than 50 countries.

Canada is a member of the UDCG’s Armour, Air Force, and Drone coalition capabilities, which were established by UDCG members to strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities in particular areas.

Since February 2022, Canada has committed over $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. This includes Leopard 2 main battle tanks, armoured combat support vehicles, anti-tank weapons, small arms, M777 howitzers and associated ammunition, high-resolution drone cameras, winter clothing, and more. Canada is also contributing to multinational efforts to train pilots and maintain and support Ukraine’s F-16s.

Since the launch of Operation UNIFIER, Canada has trained over 40,000 members of the AFU. Canada has announced the extension of this mission until March 2026, so that the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) can continue to respond to Ukraine’s urgent training needs.

Canada continues to train AFU members under Operation UNIFIER, with more than 300 CAF members deployed in various roles such as the provision and coordination of training, national command support, and the facilitation and delivery of military donations to Ukraine in coordination with Allies.

Since late March 2022, the CAF has been assisting with the delivery of military aid for Ukraine within Europe from Canada and on behalf of our Allies and partners, transporting over 16 million pounds of military donations to date.

Israel Military Purge Escalating, Will Topple More Major Officials

Aharon Haliva, the head of Israel’s military intelligence in Gaza City

A major purge of senior Israeli military and intelligence officials is underway over their failure to prevent the devastating Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

On Monday, Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva , the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intelligence branch, resigned. He’s the first senior Israeli official to step down for failing to prevent the assault, in which Hamas militants killed some 1,200 Israelis and took more than 250 others hostage in the worst terrorist attack in Israel’s history.

But he won’t be the last. As military investigators deepen their internal probe into the events surrounding the Oct. 7 attack, many others in the IDF’s intelligence branch, as well as Israel’s Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency, are expected to leave their posts in disgrace, knowledgeable Israeli sources told SpyTalk.

“The intelligence directorate under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with,” Haliva wrote in his anguished resignation letter. “I carry that black day with me ever since, day after day, night after night. I will carry the horrible pain of the war with me forever.”

Haliva’s resignation is expected to set off an avalanche of departures from the top echelons of Israel’s military and intelligence establishments, these sources say. Others who are expected to resign in the following months include Defense Minister Yoav Gallant; Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzl Halevi, the IDF’s top commanding officer; and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar. All have publicly accepted responsibility for the Oct. 7 failure. But have continued to serve amid the demands of Israel’s war against Hamas, now in its sixth month.

“It’s not clear how quickly it will happen, but I’m sure more resignations will come,” Yossi Kucik, who served as chief of staff for former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, said in a telephone interview.

According to Amos Harel, the military correspondent for the daily Ha’aretz, others who played a role in the failures of Oct. 7 are poised to leave their posts, including several senior Shin Bet officials, the current and previous commander of IDF’s Southern command, the head of the IDF’s Operations Division, and the commander of the Gaza Division

But a former senior government official says that lawyers for these officers are urging them to remain in their posts until the current ruling rightwing coalition leaves office and a new, more moderate government takes office.

“The problem is that if these people resign now, Bibi will replace them with radical rightwing ass-kissers,” the former senior official told SpyTalk, using Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s nickname. The former official asked to remain anonymous to discuss sensitive matters.

Israel’s next elections are in 2026, but many expect Netanyahu’s government will fall before then, forcing a new vote.

Eavesdropping Unit Purge

Earlier this month, the commander of Israel’s vaunted Unit 8200, the IDF’s powerful electronic and cyber surveillance agency, comparable to the U.S. National Security Agency, was forced to step down.

The resignation of Brig. Gen. Yossi Sariel, whose identity had been a closely guarded secret, followed an April 5 report in Britain’s Guardian newsp aper, which revealed that a book about the military uses of artificial intelligence that Sariel published on Amazon in 2021, using only the author’s initials “Y.S.”, had left a digital trail that led to a private Google account created in his name. The paper said the trail also revealed Sariel’s “unique ID and links to the account's maps and calendar profiles.”

An IDF spokesman confirmed the unmasking of Sariel, describing the book’s exposure of the spy chief’s identity as “a mistake.” But even before this security lapse, Unit 8200 under Sariel’s command had come under fire for its failure to foresee and prevent the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

Also on Monday, Maj. Gen. Yehuda Fox, the commander of Israel’s central command, which includes the occupied West Bank, notified his superiors that he would step down at the end of his three-year term in August. According to Israeli press reports, Fox said he told close associates that he saw himself as part of the IDF General Staff’s failures on Oct. 7 and was therefore honor-bound to step down.

Fox’s command has come under scrutiny by IDF investigators probing the events surrounding the Hamas attack. These included several instances in which IDF soldiers under Fox stood by or participated in violent attacks on West Bank Palestinian civilians.

Such human rights violations by Israeli forces in the West Bank, as well as others in Gaza, where Israel’s war against Hamas has killed some 34,000 Palestinians, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run Health Ministry, were included in the State Department’s annual human rights report , which was released on Monday.

In what would be an unprecedented move, the Biden administration is expected to slap sanctions on a special IDF unit for human rights violations in the West Bank, Axios reported last week. The sanctions would prohibit the unit from receiving any kind of U.S. military assistance or training under a 1997 law that prohibits U.S. foreign and military aid to foreign military, security and police units that have committed human rights violations.

The unit, called Netzah Yehuda , is a battalion made up of ultra-orthodox men and radical right wing settlers who were deemed unacceptable by all other IDF combat units.

The State Department began its investigation of Netzah Yehuda in 2022 after its soldiers were involved in numerous violent incidents against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. In one incident, Netzah Yehuda soldiers arrested Omar Assad, an 80-year-old Palestinian American, at a checkpoint near his village, claiming he refused to be searched. In response, the soldiers handcuffed and gagged him, then left him on the ground in the cold. He was found dead a few hours later.

Months ago, a State Department team investigating alleged foreign human rights violations based on the 1997 law recommended that Secretary of State Antony Blinken sanction several Israel military and police units that operate in the West Bank. Asked about the team's recommendations at a news conference in Italy last Friday, Blinken said he had reached determinations based on the team’s investigation and that they would be made public “in the days ahead.”

Russia's military is allergic to the deep reforms it needs

  • Can the Russian military can be reformed to better achieve Putin's revanchist aims?
  • Yes, but the drastic changes will not be easy, an expert on Russia's military says.
  • "The appearance of success may be more important than truly making progress," she argues.

Insider Today

Whatever the outcome of the Ukraine war, one thing seems certain: the Russian military needs drastic changes.

A country recently thought to be a top military power, with the jets, tanks and warships to match, has been forced to slog it out in conventional battle with a country a fifth its size and has suffered an estimated 500,000 casualties without victory in sight after two years. What few innovations the Kremlin has made, such as using convicts as suicide infantry, are dubious and ad hoc at best.

The question is whether the Russian military can actually change in the near-future, which would impact the current war in Ukraine and the wider grasp for conquest under Russian President Vladimir Putin. Armies tend to be conservative institutions that resist change, particularly in Russia's armed forces that date back to Tsarist and Soviet times and are rife with corruption and abuse. Yet Russia's enemies can't complacently assume that Moscow's military will always be stuck in a rut, warns a US expert.

"The Russian military is capable of reform, especially of a structural nature," wrote researcher Katherine Kjellström Elgin in a report for the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments think tank in Washington, D.C. "That does not mean, however, that reform will be easy. Indeed, Russia's tendency to seek top-down structural reforms matched with enduring characteristics of the Russian military suggest that a transformation of the Russian military will be difficult."

"The Russian military is unlikely to substantially reform in the short- to medium-term," predicted Elgin, who believes "it is unlikely that its future force will be drastically different in character from the Russian military that exists today."

It's not that Russia can't adapt to failure. Reforms occurred after the Crimean War of 1853-1856, yet the Soviet military was able to adapt quickly enough to transform the disaster of 1941 — when Nazi German troops reached the outskirts of Moscow — into the triumph of 1945. Today, Russia has displayed skill in waging drone and electronic warfare in Ukraine.

But these are small innovations compared to the agile, NATO-style army that some Western experts claimed Russia had created before the Ukraine war Putin ordered in 2022. "Instead, the early stages of the Russian invasion exposed low morale, brittle logistics, overly centralized command and control, deficiencies in equipment, rampant corruption, and an overreliance on esoteric doctrine, revealing that the reform efforts that began in 2008 had failed to fully deliver on many of their core objectives," Elgin pointed out.

Related stories

Historically, when the Russian military does change, it tends to be top-down reforms such as reorganizing military districts or modernizing equipment, rather than low-level tactics, Elgin wrote. Even when leaders order reforms, change is blocked by "military culture that does not encourage authority, a lack of talented and empowered middle management, inaccurate information, and a lack of flexibility to adjust course."

The system also encourages pleasing superiors and "conveying the appearance of success may be more important than truly making progress." To be fair, such complaints about style over substance are not unheard of in the US or other militaries. But this problem is especially acute in Russia's highest echelons, where apparatchiks stifle the feedback and criticism needed to identify what's hampering its systems and operations, including the Ukraine war.

This doesn't rule out the unlikely possibility that Russia can change the overall culture of its military. However, according to Elgin, this can only happen if two conditions are met: high-level and sustained political support and adequate resources are made available.

Given that observers so misjudged Russian military capabilities prior to the Ukraine war, how can the West accurately determine whether reforms are occurring? One sign is whether top Russian leaders only make an occasional speech about military improvement, or whether they continually address the issue.

Another is the grievances and recommendations voiced by younger officers fresh from the battlefields of Ukraine and which officers are being promoted or ignored. And despite Russia's authoritarian crackdown on dissent, voices outside the military are a good indicator. "These voices could emerge from military blogs, the intelligence services, or private military companies," Elgin wrote.

However, it is also important to study not just Russian officers, but also how ordinary soldiers are trained, Elgin told Business Insider. "What are they teaching in military schools? How are troops being trained on a daily basis? In other words, how are reforms being rolled out not just at the top levels, but how are they affecting the experience of every service member?"

Reform doesn't necessarily translate into battlefield performance. Despite reforms instituted after the Crimean War, the Russian army still suffered from command control and other flaws in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. "It is possible to successfully achieve the goals you set out in a reform program, but to reform in ways that do not result in success on the battlefield," Elgin said.

Any reforms today might only create a military with a new look but old problems. "It may have new equipment, new formations, and potentially new doctrine," said Elgin. "but its enduring weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and tendencies are likely to remain the same. And this is something that NATO, Ukraine, and others can prepare for and take advantage of."

Ukraine cuts consular services for potential conscripts lodged overseas

Kyiv’s top diplomat orders the move as war-torn country pushes to boost conscription.

Ukraine soldiers

Ukraine is set to suspend consular services for military-age men abroad.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Tuesday that he had ordered services cut for all such men, except for those returning to Ukraine. The move comes as Kyiv pushes to boost conscription in a bid to halt building Russian momentum on the battlefield .

‘i couldn’t breathe’: as war rages, ukraine’s mental health crisis spirals, photos: ukraine’s coal miners dig deep to power a nation at war, the war in ukraine is here to stay.

Kuleba said in a statement on X that he had ordered the measures to restore what he described as “fair treatment” for men of mobilisation age.

“How it looks like now: a man of conscription age went abroad, showed his state that he does not care about its survival, and then comes and wants to receive services from this state,” he said. “It does not work this way. Our country is at war.”

He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would clarify the procedure for military-age men to obtain consular services soon.

Protecting the rights and interests of Ukrainian citizens abroad has always been and remains a priority for the MFA. At the same time, under the circumstances of Russia’s full-scale aggression, the main priority is to protect our Homeland from destruction. How it looks like now:… — Dmytro Kuleba (@DmytroKuleba) April 23, 2024

Eurostat estimates that about 4.3 million Ukrainians were registered in European Union countries as of January, of which about 20 percent, or 860,000, were adult men.

Kuleba’s move appears linked to a hotly debated new law that aims to speed up mobilisation into the armed forces.

The law, which comes into effect next month, will require all military-age men to report to draught offices to update their documents, remotely or in person, within 60 days. They would need those papers to receive consular services.

“Staying abroad does not relieve a citizen of his or her duties to the homeland,” Kuleba said.

In a separate statement, the state passport service said “due to technical reasons” it was suspending the issuance of “ready-made documents” in overseas branches.
