Mullayanagiri to bababudanagiri trek route

This trekking route makes trekking little tricky if you are going there in your own vehicle. Because you reach the Mullayanagiri peak in the morning; park your vehicle there; start trek to the Bababudangiri; reach Bababudangiri by the evening but there is no transportation from Bababudangiri back to the Mullayanagiri peak.

In that case, you should have a driver with your vehicle who can drop you at the Mullayanagiri peak or at Sarpadhari and should be waiting for you at the BabaBudangiri to pick you up after the trek. There is a motorable road to both of the peaks and there is a trekking trail which joins the two peaks and forms the trekking route.

Mullayanagiri from Bangalore

You can also use public transport to reach Mullayanagiri peak. But for that, you would first need to reach Chikmagalur the base district town and from there hire an Auto or a jeep to the peak.

Sarpadhari trek to Mullayanagiri peak:

The Sarpadhari trek to Mullayanagiri peak starts at this point called Mullayanagiri trek Starting Point  on the Google map. You will also see a small arch iron gate to your left. It’s Sarpadhari, the trek starting point. Sarpadhari is a Kannada word which means path like a snake, ‘Sarpa’ stands for snake and ‘Dhari’ for the way.

Mullayanagiri Sarpadhari trek beginning point

Mullayanagiri Sarpadhari trek beginning point

From Chikmagalur , Sarpadhari is around 15 Kms. The Auto charges you around 300-400 to drop you there. If you are a trekking enthusiast, you should start your trek from the Sarpashari itself. Start early morning to avoid the sun. Mind that there will be a lot of fog in the morning.

You can also use the Google map to download the Sarpadhari. Sarpadhari trail is little steep sometimes. You also get to see the sunrise if you start early morning. The trek until Mullayanagiri peak takes around an hour.

Mullayanagiri to BabaBudangiri trek:

Once you reach the Mullayanagiri peak (Either directly by vehicle or by Sarpadhari trek), you can start the trek to BabaBudangiri from Mullayanagiri. The trail can be found on the Google map. Just for your information, the Mullayanagiri trail to BabaBudangiri starts behind the Shiva temple. Here is the link to the Mullayanagiri to Baba budangiri trail

If you are going to the peak with your own vehicle, it might happen that big vehicles like Tempo-traveler or MiniBus might not make it to the peak. In that case, the bus will drop you at the Seethlayanagiri Temple from where the Mullayanagiri peak is around 2 Kms along the same road.

Mullayanagiri by vehicle

Mullayanagiri by vehicle

The total trek distance from Mullayanagiri peak to the BabaBudangiri peak is around 9 Kms and it takes a time of around 5 hours if your group is fast enough. Almost after 3 Kms from the Mullayanagiri peak, you cross the Attigundi road. There is a forest department office at the crossing. You might to take permission there or pay some forest department charges. Attigundi road is the same road which joins Mullayanagiri peak to the BabaBudangiri peak by road for vehicles.

After you cross the forest department officials, the Mullayanagiri trek is mostly along the ridge. You will get to see the valley on one of the trail. You can also down the whole trail offline on your mobile phone and use GPS while trekking.

Mullayanagiri trekking tips:

  • Always look out for the white marks on the rocks or on the trail.
  • If you encounter a dead end an hour after the crossing the forest department along with the ridge, follow the GPS. The same trail continues and is located on the left.
  • Always remember the BSNL tower. The BSNL tower is located near the end.
  • At one of time, we found a bifurcation where we took the right trail and that led to nowhere. We took the left trail near the tower. Or in short, keep the GPS trail installed.
  • You can camp near the BabaBudangiri. There is a water source there called “Manikhyadhara waterfall”.
  • There are also shops near the BabaBudangiri where you can get food.
  • I am not sure of the vehicles from BabaBudangiri to the Chikmagalur. I think Autos are available.

We are planning to trek this weekend (30 oct 2016). we are planning to leave mysore early morning at 5 and will be reaching the base point round 8 am. Somewhere you mentioned that now a days they are not allowing to trek after some point. Is it possible to trek now.?

Is it possible to complete the trek by 3 pm if we reach base camp early morning around 8 am..??

Is there any safe place to park 4 wheeler near the base camp..??

There is a forest department office midway. It depends on the forest department guide. I wish he allows you guys to go further. Yeah, completing the trek by 3 PM is possible provided you walk fast and do not take long breaks. I hope you have a small number of people in your trekking group. It is safe there. But I am wondering how will return to the trek starting point?

I do not think so that tents are available for rent in Chikmagalur

' src=

Highly Informative. We are planning to head towards Mullyanagiri during september could you please clarify few questions mentioned below.

1. Is there any trekking charges involved from Sarphadari to Bababudangiri? 2. Do we have any (transit) BUS facilities to return back from Bababudangiri to Chikamagaluru back on the same day? 3. What would be the ideal time to start from Chikamagaluru to complete the whole trek in one single day. 4. Any idea on transit from kemmanagundi to chikkamagaluru (viceversa)? since we are planning to cover up some local places at kemmanagundi a day before we start trekking.

1. You might have to pay the guard in between when you cross the main road otherwise there is no any trekking charge 2. There are not any bus facilities you might to book an auto to Mullayanagiri or a jeep may be and the same while returning from bababudangiri 3. start as early as possible… road to Mullayanaigir forest reserve open at 6 in the morning to try to stick to that time before that you cant enter anyway 4. No idea about the last question and I do not think there is any transit.. maybe local buses

' src=

Do we have to take the same trail while coming down? And then how do we go from starting point of sarpdhari to Chikmanglur?

Can you please clarify what do you mean?

What about the permissions from forest dept?

So you take the permission almost on the half way near the forest department office which is half way across. Now a days, due to monsoon and an unfortunate incident which happened last year at the same time, they might not give you the permission to trek further. For more clarifications, go through the blog again. You will get to know what am I meaning to say?

' src=

Can we cook out there?

yes you can cook there

' src=

Ur blog was gud it helped alot….bt do v need sort of permission for camping???

Is permission required to camp by ourselves With our own kit..at night time in mullayanagiri….

' src=

Western Ghats Adventure club in Chikmagalur. Organizes trekking, camping, homestay to Mullayanagiri, bababudangiri hills. Their hospitality is awesome and over nite camping in a coffee estate is an awesome experience. Any one willing can contact them @ 9008899008.

' src=

Can u plz tell us. If camping is allowed on mullayanagiri. And I heard tat we cnt put d tent bcoz of heavy wind. Can u guide me plz. I m also planning fr 2nyt stay. Where all cn I go fr trekking.

Yeah, you can camp at mullayanagiri but do not camp at the peak… camp just below the peak… yeah wind is very high always

' src=

Ur info on d blog was useful.. N v r planning to go tis Sept. Ten Of us by five bikes , so I needed to know where can v park our vehicles ? Is it safe ? V r planning to trekk til bababudangiri.. Can v park vehicles at sarpadhari or near Shiva temple @ mullayanagiri peak ?

N can v get any accommodations @ bababudhangiri fr d nyt ?

@Parking the bikes: Lets know something about the place. Sarpadhari begins from main road and its not a safe place. Shiv temple, Mullayanaigir peak: Yes, its a safe place to park the bike. Or, Seeth?layanagiri Temple: it comes 3-4 kms before Mullayanagiri peak. From this temple until Mullayanagiri peak the road is in not so good motorable condition. So if some car is there better park here. Bikers go until mullayanagiri peak. But I cant guarantee total safety if you are leaving your bike for 6-7 hours or even more than that

Once you finish the trek, you will reach manikhayadhara waterfall… refer the map.. from there a road goes to bababudanagiri and further connects to other places…Manikhyadharra is 4-5 kms from bababudanagiri so.. either you can walk upto bababudanagiri or you can take some life from waterfall to bababudanagiri, you can find autos and bus….there will be lot of vehicles but mostly private like that happens at tourist spots but some will be public vehicles as well……

@accomodation.. there is a guest house at bababudanagiri, I am sure of this but I dont know the exact location because I camped at manikhyadhara so never really needed however some other trekking group informed me about the cottage house.. so you can try that…

coming back to bikes… I cant say much about the leaving bike at shiva temple for more than 12 hours… if you are planning soo

' src=

This place is just wow.. superb pictures.. it feels awesome when you are there between the clouds..

' src=

pls send me the forest ranger contact number

I dont have the number… why do you need the FRO contact number?

' src=

Hi There, I am planning of doing this route between 25 and 26 July, i heard hat there is no camping allowed on Mullayangiri because it comes under the wildlife area!! will be great if you could share any latest update you would have on this.

Thanks Jyothsna

You can pitch the tent at the top… Read my blog carefully again pls

Thank you i got that, one other question- We are planning to continue the trek on day 2 to Kemmangundi, would you know of any local guides who can help us out with that??

Thanks in anticipation !!

No i am not in contact with any local guide… I am sorry

' src=

Any sort of permission is required from forest department if we wish to camp near the falls?

There is no permission needed. You take the permission once you cross the highway. That permission is only for trekking. Near the waterfall there is no need of permission. Its now a days almost a public area. In the day time, you can see people doing picnic and celebrating their days

' src=

Thanks you so much for the reply….

Mullayangiri Trek - A Trek to the head of Karnataka

Mullayanagiri is a part of the Baba Budangiri range located in Chikamagaluru (District). It is at 1,930 meters (6,330 ft) from sea level. It is known as the highest peak in the Karnataka. Let's move on to some details.

difficulty

Best Season

Water Source

Water Source

How to reach the starting point of the trek.

From Chikmagalur proceed towards Bababudangiri , near Kaimara you have to take left turn (8 kms from Chikmagalur). You will hit Y intersection, Your left side road goes to mullayanagiri peak(direct road till peak ). If you want to trek then just move straight further 500 mts. You will find small arch towards your left. That is called Sarpadhari . This will be your starting point.

The trek to the peak from Sarpadhari is a half day trek. The peak is at a distance of 3 KM from the starting point and takes about 2-3 hours to ascend. The initial part of the trek is steep, inclined at 60 degrees or more .

The path is lined with bushes and trees. After some time. the trail zig-zags along the mountains and the ascent becomes steeper. You will soon hit a massive rock. You need to move ahead, passing through the opening in the cliff.

Trek Start

After trekking for around two hours, you will come across a Nandi (Bull) idol beneath a tree. Dense shrubs and flowering creepers surround this statue.

Shrubs and flowering creepers surround this statue

From here on, the trail becomes less steep. Walking further, you will come across some deep caves. From these caves, the trail once again starts ascending. This is the final stretch of the peak. There is another Nandi statue very near to the peak. Soon after this, you will come across the temple at the peak and the tomb.

Trail is not always visible. Thank God! Google Map marks the complete trail from Sarpadhari to Mullayangiri, awesome right? You can navigate throughout the trail using your smartphone.

Coming Back

For descending, You can take the same route back however, I will not recommend that since trail is too steep and there are chances you might get slip. You can also go down via the 250 odd stone steps in the hill, which takes you toward the concrete road joining Mullayanagiri foothills from Chikmagalur.

Stairs to Road

Alternatively, you can also trek toward Baba Budangiri from Mullayangiri temple. This is a moderate trek of 10 km from Mullayangiri, passing through ridges, hills and grasslands.

You can camp overnight at Mullayanagiri hill top. But the place is very windy. There are also no toilet facilities there. The best time to trek this place is after monsoon preferably from September to February. Do remember that high winds, mist and rain can make the trail slippery and the visibility, low. During post monsoon, the place is also infested with leeches.

Mullayangiri is a very nice place to see a sunrise. So, if you want to start this trek early morning so that you can enjoy a blissfull sunrise, You can stay near the starting point of trek. There are a lot of homestays near the starting point. You can find them all on Google Maps. We parked our car at Born Af Berry . It is 2 KM from the starting point.

Born Af Berry Homestay

Bonus Attraction: Pit spot

A very nice cafe on the way to Bababudangiri hills from Chikmagalur. Great food, great ambience and great coffee. Try Hot Choclate with Hazelnut here. I still miss that.

The Pitspot Cafe

Trek Gallery

Caves in trek

Mullayangiri is a very nice weekend trek. Chikmagalur is about 280 KM from Bangalore. You can catch a late night bus, complete your trek in the morning and enjoy Bababudangiri in the evenning. The trek is easy however you will not found much trekkers here as there is a motor road to go the peak and not many people are interested in the adventure.

In the end, if you have not trekked before, this is a perfect to start with. I am sure, You will make an awesome lifetime memory and if it does, give me a whaaaat up?! or maybe a big high five .

Also, if you like to go sometime together, you can contact me by various means. You can find the contact details in the footer.

Mullayanagiri deemed as the highest peak in Karnataka at a height of 6300 ft., is located in the Chandra Dhrona Hill ranges of the Chikmagalur district. The place derived its name from a small temple which is found at the peak summit, dedicated to the Tapasvi Mulappa Samy who was known to have meditated in a cave presently located underneath the temple. The cave is accessible and is not very deep. Cave exploration is one of the most popular activities during this trek. The trek route is highly soothing for the eyes as the entire trail is filled with lush greenery all around and full of coffee plantation fields in the foothills of the peak. The sunset view from the peak is mesmerizing and makes the arduous hike up the peak worthwhile. DETAILED ITINERARY DAY 00: You are picked up from Bangalore at 10:15 PM for an overnight journey by coach to Chikmagalur. On the way you will be given a brief regarding the trek route and introduction to the terrain you are heading to. Mullayanagiri Trekking Chikmagalur

Updated on March 26, 2022 at 9:40 PM

History of Mullayana Giri

When there was a holy person named Tapasvi Mullapa Swamy. Local people of the areas in and around the Mullayanagiri accept that he used to contemplate at the top culmination of this Mullayanagiri slope. As such, the mountain got its present character.

In the good 'ol days, when the black-top stone and substantial advances were thoroughly missing, individuals used to climb the culmination by a path known as Sarpanadi or Sarpadari. This isn't so popular paths in current days.

Exuberant grasslands and forests also home the abundant variety flora and fauna. The Badhra wild life sanctuary situated on the steep slopes of Mullayanagiri is protected area for tigers.

Elephants, leopards and sloth bear are the main attractions of the sanctuary among other animals living in their natural habitat. Tourists paying a visit to the temple are usually offered prasad.

Mullayanagiri has many homestays amidst the coffee plantation and valleys housing numerous tourists every year and making it a convenient stay. Panoramic view From Baba Budangiri

Baba Budangiri is a mighty mountain standing tall at 1,895 m in the coffee land of Karnataka, Chikmagalur. Nestled amidst western ghats these hills are also known as “ Dattagiri “ and it is the 2nd  tallest peak in Karnataka. This place got its name from a Sufi saint Baba Budan who inhabited here during the late 16th century.

There is a Dattatreya temple (Incarnation of Lord Shiva) and a Dargah of  Saint Baba Budan. Hence, these hills act as a popular pilgrimage center for both Hindus and Muslims. Besides this, Baba Budangiri also remains as a hotspot amongst the hardcore adventure freaks, travelers, and nature enthusiasts.

Baba Budangiri peak

With lush green vegetation as far as the eyes could see, loft grasslands, steep valleys, mist-filled clouds, stunning streams, sparkling waterfalls, aromatic coffee estates, and plenty of trekking opportunities is sure to strike a chord with you. Not to mention, the view of the Sun running down the horizon and painting the whole sky Orange is a feast to the eye.

Apparently,  if legends are to be believed, then Saint Baba Budan during his pilgrimage journey to Mecca had visited Yemen and bought plenty of coffee beans along with him. And he planted them in the Baba Budangiri range for the first time in India in 1670

You can reach the Mullayanagiri summit either through trekking or you can take your vehicle to the top from where the peak is 500 steps away.

Actually, the trek to Baba Budangiri starts from the backside of Shiva temple on Mullayanagiri peak. It is a 9 km long trek which will normally take you 5 to 6 hours to complete. You can divide the trek into 2 phases.

Mullayanagiri To Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint.

It is a 3 km journey amidst grasslands and Shola forest. In the end, you will reach Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint near Attigundi road, where you have to seek permission to continue your trek. You can take a break, have your packed lunch and refill your bottle here. It is an easy path without much confusion as the pathway is clear.

From Kavikal Gundi Checkpoint To Bababudangiri

Ridge walk along the way to BabaBudangiri Peak Trek

On the other hand, this 6 km trekking trail is a bit confusing one. Mostly you will be walking on narrow ridges with the steep valley on one side and dense forest on the other side. Indeed, there is white marking done on the rocks to help fellow travellers with directions. However, make sure to follow the BSNL tower in Bababudangiri, which is visible from far, if you get lost.

Camping can be done overnight near the Manikyadhara waterfalls. No need to worry about food, as there are few eateries near Baba Budangiri. However, if you wish to cook, you can find a lot of firewood and you can set up your barbeque.

Above all, the trail route can also be found on Google map. But to be on the safer side it is always better to ask locals, who know the path better than Google.

Usually, you can find auto-rickshaws or jeeps to get back to Chikmagalur main town.

Also, try hiring a guide and trek to Kemmanagundi hills, Manikyadhara falls, or Gaalikere from Baba Budangiri.

Mullayanagiri Trek and Ridge Walk

' src=

In my search for peace in the wilderness, I was finally able to force some time out from my work schedule, to go on the trek to Mullayanagiri , the highest peak in Karnataka. I had been planning this trek for some time. In fact, I was all set for this trek in November 2014 but had to cancel it at the last minute.

Mullayanagiri is located in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, some 280 km away from Bangalore. With the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary only 15 km away, the area is rich in vegetation and varied wildlife.

We started from Bangalore late in the night at around 11 p.m. The travel time to Mullayanagiri is around 4 hours. At the base of Mullayanagiri, there is a wildlife outpost. It was early dawn and since the wild animals use the area as a thoroughfare, we had to stop there for over an hour. A handful of us strolled around for the time the bus waited. It was still dark. The guards at the check-post had lit a bonfire, that kept us warm for some time. By 6.00 am, one of the dhaba  (eatery) had opened up. I and a couple of the trekkers took an early breakfast of coffee and omelets.

Once the checkpost opened, we drove up the hilly area. The vibrant sun rose from behind the strips of the cloud. That sunrise is still etched in my mind as the sky soon became a painter’s canvas.

By 8 a.m. we were at our homestay. It was a nice, quaint place in the woods. I could hear the sound of water cascading from a tiny spring nearby. From our cottage, I could see a few exotic birds. I went for a walk taking pictures of some birds. I now understand 400 mm is still way short for birding. Maybe I should invest in a teleconverter.

The Trek to Mullayanagiri Peak

After a quick freshening up and breakfast of Idli , we started on our trek to the Mullayanagiri  peak.

The bus drove us to the starting point of the trek. We started the ascent at around 10 a.m. A few minutes into the trek one of the guys, Ravi started feeling sick. We waited for some time but eventually, when he did not recover, we had to send him back to the cottage with one of our trek guides. The climb is steep and it was tough with my camera backpack. After climbing for about a couple of hours, we passed a big rock that looked totally like a human face.

Face In The Stone

After the first hour of climb, the trek becomes relatively easier as we move into the flatter area. At the top, the hills are smooth like meadows. I must say these meadows would look amazing after monsoons when green grass would cover the whole mountain like a carpet.

Mullayangiri Trek

After hiking through the meadows we reached a cave. I had developed some cramps in my right thigh so I took some rest here. Hydrating oneself is very important on a trek. Not only on the trek, one should hydrate the body a couple of days before the trek.

Mullayangiri Cave Exploration

There was a lot of moss on the walls of the cave. At places where the rocks were visible, one could make out the lines dripping water had created.

Mullayangiri Cave Moss

The sparkling moss in the cave

From the cave, after a bit of hiking, we finally reached the peak.  Mullayanagiri is part of the Baba Budangiri Hill Ranges and it’s amazing to look at from the peak. I found myself in front of a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on top of the hill. The small hillock inside the temple premises is the highest point in Karnataka. The front was still clean, but it was very dirty and smelly overall. We went a few steps down where it was comparatively cleaner and decided to have lunch there.

Mullayangiri Trek

The Mullayangiri peak

After lunch, we got back on the trail. The descent from here was relatively easy.

The trail becomes a bit steep as we neared the end of our hike. The bus was already waiting for us at the base. We hopped in and on popular demand from the group, headed towards the  Dabdabbe waterfalls. I decided to wait for the bus, opting to save my energy for the next day.

Back at the cottage, we freshened up. Some guys started a game of cards. I went for a walk down the road. it was pitch black just a few meters beyond the cottage. I gathered some courage and kept going for about half a kilometer, eventually, I turned back. I wasn’t able to make a call through my phone. The person who owns/runs the place lent me his phone. He is a nice chap. Talks very humbly. I am going to put his phone number in the FAQs below if anyone needs to contact him for homestay.

Dinner was served at 9 p.m. We had rice and sambar. After dinner, we gathered some wood from the surroundings and started a bonfire starting at around 11 p.m. An alien theory was proposed by one of the trekkers, Altanai, who refuses to acknowledge the theory of Evolution. Our discussion gradually moved on from fantasy to more acceptable on philosophical lines. Eventually, I went to sleep at around 1 am.

Mullayangiri Trek

Mullayangiri Trek

I rose up early, washed up, brushed, and went for a walk towards the bushes, where I had spotted some Bulbuls the day before. I waited for a long time patiently eventually a few of them showed up. I was able to get a few shots.

Red Whiskered Bulbul

The red-whiskered bulbul is a passerine bird found mostly in Asia

Mullayanagiri   Ridge Walk

I had noticed the Ridge, the day before and it looked overwhelming, so I decided to leave my camera gear behind and concentrate on the climb instead. The ridge walk is not allowed without permission. It’s a steep climb over edgy rocks but not difficult. At certain points, it’s steep and very narrow, but the rocks make it easy to grab and climb. Without the heavy Camera bag, I was feeling a lot free. For the first time, I was leading the trek.

Mullayangiri Ridge Walk

Viki at Mullayangiri Ridge Walk

The rocky climb lasted for about an hour, thereafter we hit the meadows again.

Mullayangiri Ridge Walk

So that's what it looks like to be at the front of the trek..

After a couple of hours, we could see the BSNL tower. From there we walked along a steep ridge. It was dangerous and thrilling at the same time. Looking on the right towards the abyss made my head go round. So I just kept my head down and eyes on the trail and kept walking.

Mullayangiri Ridge Walk

The last bit of the ridge walk is very precarious, not recommended for people with vertigo

It would have been safer to use trekking poles in such unsafe areas. One slip can turn out to be fatal. We reached the end of our walk at around noon. We went back to the cottage to have lunch there. On reaching, I went and collected my camera backpack. After a hearty lunch, we headed back to Bangalore.

On the last couple of treks, I felt the focus of the treks had shifted to making noise, jumping around, and taking “flying photos” to obtain likes on social media. It certainly depends on the group of people going on each time. I had really enjoyed the earlier treks I went to last year. Even the group that went to Gokarna was fun. At one point on the trek, some of us had to wait for an hour while others in the group went for a photo session. Not everyone enjoys nature in the same way. I am strongly feeling the need to go solo if I want to truly enjoy nature in peace.

Mullayangiri Trek

One of my daredevil Trek buddies

Drive to Bangalore

On the way, we stopped at Chikmagalur  for some refreshments. I was feeling dehydrated so I grabbed a Pepsi. From my window seat, I kept watching the fields passing by. I love to stare at nature, it pleases me, like an ecstasy drug. We reached Silk Board stop at 9 pm and in another 30 minutes, I was back at home.

Mullayanagiri is not for the faint-hearted, especially the ridge walk. The trek to the peak is easy to moderate difficulty. I would suggest keeping yourself as light as possible. It was a mistake on my part to take extra lenses on the trek and it weighed heavily on my first day of the ascent. The meadows are excellent especially when you go on the ridge walk, however, note ridge walk is quite a bit on the dangerous side and should not be challenged in the monsoon season.

Eco Holiday Home . The homestay is located on Baba Budangiri Hills. They provide rooms, tents as well as the Cottage where I stayed. The name of the contact person is Aman. His contact number is +91 9481 365 565 Disclaimer: I loved the homestay. The bathrooms were clean and the food was tasty, but I do not accept any responsibility if you use their services.

If you are visiting Mullayanagiri, you could also plan a visit to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. It is only 15 km away

Mullayanagiri is pleasant after the monsoons. The lush green meadows are a sight to behold. Although trekking during that time has its disadvantages. Leeches are everywhere. The mist decreases visibility substantially

Day 1: 31st Dec 2010 (Friday)

Having the tickets already booked in Rajahamsa (11;30pm) bus to chikamagalur, I packed up my rucksack and got ready to leave. Naveen came to my place directly from work. At 10;30pm we left to Majestic K.S.R.T.C bus stand. We met up with Vikram, Anil, Arul, Prathap and Vinay. Vanathi was also there. After a brief hi/hello session, we boarded the bus. If you haven't noticed it yet, we left on 31st Dec 2010. So obviously sleep was not an option till 00 00 hrs - 01-01-2011. So after the count down, wishes and phone calls, all of us retired for whatever sleep we could get. The morning was waiting and we had to be fresh to trek.

Day 2: 1st Dec 2011 (Saturday)

mullayanagiri trek steps

We reached Chikamagalur bus stand at 5:30am without any delay. Vikram's brother - Vijay had already come to Chikamagalur and he was staying in "Rajmahal hotel" very near to the bus stand. We went there to freshen up. This really delayed us and was trouble in making which would affect us later is a very severe way. We left the hotel after breakfast (idly and vada) at 8:30am. There was no bus that went to Sarpana Daari which is on the way to Bababadangiri/Mullayanagiri hill peak. There is road access till the top of both these peaks. So out of desperation and in need of time, we took a taxi to the sarpanadaari. It costed us 350 rs.

On the left is Vijay standing at the entrance to the path - sarpandaari, also know as sarpinadaari etc. "Sarpa" is snake and "daari" is way/path in kannada. So it's basically the snake path. After a small briefing, we started the trek at 10:15am. (Tooooo late, I knw). The scenic backdrop, route was just really nice. It's nature at its best. I went ahead with Vijay and Prathap. Vijay was leading the team. We had a few discussions as to which route to take when there were cross paths and diversions but following instincts and looking at the peak and directions works here. Worst case, one might loose about 30mins. So other than this, the trek up is very easy in terms of navigation. But it was pretty steep with surface inclination of about 60 degrees.

mullayanagiri trek steps

Naveen was a little slow and had starting trouble. So after getting rid of his bag, he was much comfortable. Once the spriit of trekking engulfed everyone, it was just sheer enjoyment to continue upwards. The route was just wonderful with occational breeze. The grass flapping and brushing my leg was truly soft, wet and very nice. On the right, is the group marching up the mountain slope. After a good climb of 3 hours, we reached the caves which is about 100meters from the top of the peak. These caves run for kilometers with bat infestation. But to our surprise, we didn't find a single bat. Having good torches, we did some exploring. After the exploration, we headed up to the temple/math at the top of Mullayanagiri.

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka standing at an altitude of 1920 meters. We had already arranged for lunch there. Thanks to Vikram for that. For contact information, scroll down to the trivia and info at the end of this page.

We had lunch prepared by the bhattru's there. It was just mouth watering. They had also prepared "Paisam" for us. Very sweet welcome indeed. Temperature was about 17 degrees throughout. After lunch, we started towards Bababadangiri. This is the 2nd leg of the trek. BababadanGiri peak is 12-14 kms from Mullayanagiri. (Saprindari to Mullayanagiri is under 4kms). We started at 1:50pm. We had some trouble in figuring out the route. Lost about 30mins there. But eventually found the right way. On the way, we decided to collect fire wood, cow dung and anything that can sustain fire for camp fire and cooking. We had taken rice - 3kgs, tomato, potato, onion, beans and a virety of other food items to cook. Also 100 chapatis for the 10 of us in case we were not able to cook (which is what happened).. Now, its just enjoying the nature - the extremely majestic mountain ranges, the forest embedded in the vast valleys.. At 4:00 pm we reached the road and the forest ranger's office.

The officer there asked us to take the ridge route as it was about 6kms to the peak.

The road meandered around making the journey to the peak a horiffic 12kms more. So we started our way to the peak (The hill with the tower over it). We had a meare 2 hrs + to sun down. So we were now in panic mode. We quickened our pace and hoped for a longer day. The terrain was way tougher than we had hoped. It slowed us down very badly. We reached only about 3/4th the way to Bababadangiri when it was almost dark. The clouds also started engulfing the entire vicinity including us. We were left stranded in the middle of the Bhadra wildlife reserve without any sense of direction to the tower and also with a visibility of less than 20meters. (That's actually pretty good considering it's Dec-Jan season). We took the right call to set up tent. We had carried 4 tents. 3 new ones (2 mine, 1 anil's) and 1 from IISc. We also took sleeping bags and rucksacks from the institute.

The tents were up in half an hour (Which was a little too much - 3 of us had to put all the four tents). Now comes the most exciting/scary and life changing experience. Vijay and some of the others were very keen on putting up camp fire for the heat (cooking was out of question. we did not have enough water). Anil and me, we were pretty skeptical about a fire. Two things bothered us - one, the tents were pretty close which made a camp fire dangerious. Secondly, we might start a forest fire. There was grass everywhere. So both of us were strictly against it when first, I heard something duno which animal. I was not 100% sure of what I had heard. So we decided that it was a must for a camp fire. About 2 minutes of silence, everyone heard the sounds. We were in trouble. Lost... Less water... Very very less wood.. and a huge problem of having a camp fire. Now, the camp fire was just absolutely mandatory for our safety. So we started making a safe zone by digging out all the grass making a clear circle to contain the fire. Still there was the risk of tents getting caught due to the sparks that the fire emits. We had no choice but to put the camp fire. So we did that. In the mean time, we also had whatever we had brought. Chapatis with jam and chilly powder. No water.. The apples that my mother gave me came to huge help ( I has scolded her for increasing a kg of luggage.. How I thanked here at this point.... ).

Now it was clear. We went through some safety procedures that we would follow in case of a tiger, wolf attack. After the safety briefing, we decided a patrol and watchout schedule. Since we were 10 people, 3 people sets were formed to keep the fire going and the perimeter safe. Having good torches, we were able to, to some extent keeep a perimeter check every 5 minutes (like the lights in the prison - guard towers) and sooner if we heard anything. We had very little wood. If we had listened to the ranger (he told us that we would find wood in bababadangiri - if we had made it there, there would have not been a problem of animals.. we have damm. stranded in the middle of nowhere..), we would have had no fire and might have just ended up being food for some hungry animal. Anil, Prathap and I, we took the first watch from 8:00pm to 12:30am. We had a tough time keeping the fire alive and also listening to all the sounds. People were snoring in the tents, so we had a number of false panics during our watch. We took double precaution even for a piss. :D. . We had 3 knives and the fire for our protection. God's protection - we didn't have rain and heavy winds.

Day 3: 2nd December 2011 (Sunday)

mullayanagiri trek steps

As the night swept in, the temperature also dropped steeply. From 17 degrees, midnight temperature was about 7-8degrees (Thanks to my watch which showed temperature and altitute - thanks to my cousin Mukund for the gift). We camped at a height of 1840 metres. We called out the other three people who were to take shift watch from 12:30am to 4 am. They had a tough time keeping the fire going. Vijay and Vinay had the courage to go around the camp trying to gather wood. We had found a lot of wood but they were all wet and didn't slove any purpose. Luckily, thanks to Vinay, they found a nice big dry log. It was the reason the camp fire was up all night. I was fast asleep after my watch. We got up at 7am after the 3rd shift. The temperature was slowely increasing. Sun rise was at 7:15am. All of us were up and we had some biscuits, cake and things that would not make us crave for water. We were now in water scarsity. Food we had plently, may be for another 3-5 days of survival.

All of us were very relieved about not being attacked by any animal. We un-pitched the tents quiclky. Took a few group photographs and started our trek to the tower. (Finally the tower was visible and we were actually not lost :) ). We started towards the tower expecting a water source there. On the way, Arul had problems with her knee. So we had to use "Volini" and "Iodex" for quick relief. We finally reached the tower.

To our utter bad luck, we didn't get water. The tower was apparently abandoned. There was a jeep track which led to Bababdangiri village. So we took that route and went quicky towards the town. We reached the thar road. Right of tha road would take you to Manikkedaara and left would take you to Bababadangiri. Bababadangiri was about 2 kms from this point. This is were we discovered that we had a bottle of water. What a relief it was. We consumed it and also borrowed another bottle of water from a passing jeep. We then took another jeep to Bababadangiri. Mainly because, some of them and especially I, wanted to ride above the jeep. We paid 10rs for each person for this 2km ride.

We reached Bababudangiri at 10:45am. We had to have come here to camp the previous day. If we had done, then we could have continued as planned to Kemmanagundi (14kms) by trek. Since this was not possible, we decided to take a bus to chikamagalur. There was just one bus to chikamagalur which was to leave at 12:30pm. We had the remaining chapatis with Puliyogare gojju and pickle. The bus started only at 1:00pm. The charge was 30rs per head to chikamagalur. We reached chikamagalur at 2:10pm. We had tickets to Bangalore by Rajahamsa at 11:30pm in the night. We had booked that late cause of the plan to go to Kemmanagundi. Now that we were already there, we didn't want to wait there the whole half day, so we cancelled the tickets and took tickets in the express bus to bangalore. It left at 2:15pm. The journey was not very eventfull. We reached Bangalore at 8:45pm.

I reached home at 9pm, had a very nice hot water bath and jumped into my bed . ( Actually I was forced to take bath.. was supposedly stinking like or worse than a skunk :D ). So that's the end of a very very eventfull, excellent and a once in a life time experience.

(I have not read what I've written again, so please do forgive any typo errors here. I had a wonderful experience again just by writing this piece of experience.)

Mullaynagiri trek in Chikmagalur

Mulianagiri hills are one of the top sightseeing places in Chikmagalur. We were planning to visit Mulianagiri during the lockdown period. Once the doors of Chikmagalur tourism opened our team started jolting the itinerary for the Chikmagalur trip. If you are a nature lover who loves to travel to a place and relax then Chikmagalur is the perfect destination. In Chikmagalur, Mulianagiri is the perfect destination for exploring trekking and rejuvenation options.

There are many homestays in Chikmagalur where you can plan for accommodation and then explore Mulianagiri hills. You must know that Mulianagiri is not the only popular sightseeing but Bababudangiri and Muthodi forest regions are also awesome. You need at least 2 nights and 3 days to cover Chikmagalur sightseeing places completely. Yes, you can do a weekend trip for just 1 night and 2 days also but you can cover limited places only.

We were a team of 15 people with 25 different ideas about going for a trip. We could not arrive at a sensible conclusion if not it was TravelMalnad.com. One of the team members bumped on this fantastic portal by Malnad guys. The trip planner to Malnad became fun for all of us where we could explore many more options than we originally thought. The travel expert Mr. Sharath who guided us in detailed planning helped us save a lot of money while booking.

mullayanagiri trek steps

We all were skeptical about this 10-year-old holiday company, assuming them as one another travel agency. Once we started talking to the expert team then we realize all our friends and family visiting Malnad must contact them. Travel Malnad® doesn’t charge anything for giving itinerary or to book Chikmagalur homestays . We have spoken to them endlessly but they have very patiently listened to all our points.

Mullayanagiri trip:

Our journey began from Jayanagar in Bangalore as our starting point. Some of the team members reached my home the previous day and some joined on the day of departure. We left in our private cars from Jayanagar at around 6 AM. We reached Chikmagalur around noon time for lunch. Our host was waiting for us to serve the sumptuous meal that we all wanted to refresh ourselves. The host was like our extended family member and almost in no time we all were feeling comfortable just like our friend’s home.

We have planned for doing trekking to Mulianagiri along with our host’s professional guide. Mulianagiri trekking will take only 3 to 4 hours but we had a breathtaking experience. We covered around 4-5 Kms in this trek and we all had a thorough experience of trekking the most beautiful hills in Chikmagalur.

Trek to Mullayanagiri, Highest Peak in Karnataka

Umang Trivedi

  • October 25, 2023

mullayanagiri trek steps

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka, situated in the lush green district of Chikmagalur. As you approach Chikmagalur district, you can start seeing the Nilgiri range of mountains. Mullayanagiri stands tall amidst all the mountains as a jewel.

During our stay in Chikmagalur, we stayed  at Nesting Grounds Homestay. The homestay owner was kind enough to help us by arranging a cab for Sight seeing. A trip to Chikmagalur is considered to be incomplete if you don’t visit Mullayanagiri peak. Hence, we made an itinerary which would help us in visiting this highest point in Karnataka.

On the 2nd day of our trip, we went sightseeing. We first visited a waterfall and then proceeded for Mullayanagiri. Being the highest peak in Karnataka, we expected a long trek awaiting us. Hence, we had planned to save enough daylight for us. We reached the Mullayanagiri base by around 3 pm. After that, it was an 8 km pleasant drive through the whistling woods, overlooking the Chikmagalur town. As we traversed through the mountain curves, the sight of Chikmagalur town increased in grandeur.  We were getting more and more excited to reach Mullayanagiri peak.

We had booked a cab and were fully prepared to be told by the driver to get off the car start the trek. But, to our pleasant surprise, the car kept on discovering roads which led to the top. At one point of time, we saw a lot of cars parked and started rolling up our sleeves to start the trek. But, we realized that we were still 3 KMs away from Mullayanagiri peak. The parking lot that we saw was Seethalayanagiri. A useful tip here. Most of the drivers halt here at Seethalayanagiri. They would say that the road ahead is dreadful. He may be right, but with careful precision, he can drive 3 more kms to reach Mullayanagiri peak. However, If you feel like trekking an extra 2 KMs to reach Mullayanagiri peak, you can ask your driver to wait at Seethalayanagiri and enjoy your trek further.

Our driver was quite a sport and he continued to drive further up. The road from Seethalayanagiri to Mullayanagiri should not be attempted unless and until you are a ‘pro’. However, if you have a bike, you can conveniently ride it to the top of the peak.

We reached where all the roads ended and saw a parking spot, overlooking a valley. We now had to climb some 500 steps to reach the topmost viewpoint from the peak.

The view kept getting better and better as we climbed the steps. Finally, we reached the top and the view was now truly breathtaking. The vast landscapes spread to infinity in front of us. All that we did was to take a deep breath and admire nature’s elegance. There was a small temple at the top. We visited the temple and post that started our descent.

Mullayanagiri

View from Mullayanagiri

The trek to Mullayanagiri is not at all arduous. But, if you are looking for a strenuous trek, you can trek from Mullayanagiri to Bababudangiri peak. However, the view from Mullayanagiri is slightly better than Bababudangiri .

Mullayanagiri makes a perfect picnic spot due to the magnificent view. I would surely recommend this attraction if you are planning a weekend in Chikmagalur.

About Place: A 280 kilometer drive from Bangalore, Mullayanagiri is a peak located in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Being the highest peak in Karnataka, it offers larger than life views and the some very interesting trails. We start from Bangalore on Friday night and reach our campsite between 5 and 6 AM on saturday morning. At about 8 AM after freshening up, and a quick breakfast, we will proceed to the trailhead, a short drive away. A quick introduction and briefing and we enter the trailhead off the ghat-road known as Sarpadhari that leads to the Mullayanagiri peak. This stretch is fairly steep (almost 60 degrees) and first passes through brush and low trees until it turns right alongside a ravine on the right. The trail can be very slippery in the monsoons. We keep climbing uphill with very brief breaks in between. The trail snakes along the side of the mountain until we reach the black cliffs of Mullayanagiri and pass through an opening between them. From here, the trail starts to relent as we pass through a small field of short flowering shrubs. Here on, we hit the last and final stretch to the Mullayanagiri peak. The incline gradually increases once again until we see the temple flag at the peak. About 15 minutes of steady plodding and we will have reached the Mullayanagiri peak. The place is extremely silent and still, almost meditative - a perfect spot for the temple to exist. After a short rest, and a visit to the temple for those that are interested, we descend the peak and head toward the Hebbe Falls. The trail goes over rolling hills, with hill grassland and stretches of shola forests on either side, all of which make for some very breathtaking scenery (the incline is quite gentle apart from a couple of very steep, risky descents). Approximately 2 hours later we reach the forest check post at Gundi where we stop for a quick lunch. A 20 minute hike downhill from here and we reach the staircase to a waterfall. After spending some time recovering and reveling in our accomplishment, we drive back to our campsite for a well deserved dinner and rest. We will wake at 6AM the next morning to freshen up, followed by breakfast. We leave the campsite for sight-seeing around and after spending about an hour or two, we will start our way back to reach Bangalore by 9 PM.
