A massive police search is underway in the Philippines for two motorcycle-riding men who shot and killed a New Zealand man in a brazen street robbery that officials fear could scare foreign tourists away.

Key points:

  • Nicholas Stacey was fatally shot once in the chest while trying to wrest a pistol from one of the two robbers who held up him and his girlfriend
  • Mr Stacey's girlfriend told police the couple were walking to a laundry shop after midnight when the suspects approached them a motorcycle
  • Philippines police say they "will leave no stones unturned" in their bid to bring the culprits to justice

The 34-year-old tourist, Nicholas Peter Stacey, was fatally shot once in the chest while trying to wrest a pistol from one of the two robbers who held up him and his Philippine girlfriend on Sunday in a suburban street in Manila's Makati financial district, police Major General Jonnel Estomo said.

"We regret to report this incident and extend our sympathy to the bereaved family," Major General Estomo said in a statement, adding he had ordered the police to "leave no stones unturned until the culprits are brought to jail and are prosecuted".

While he described the deadly street robbery as an "isolated incident", Major General Estomo acknowledged it had the potential to frighten foreign tourists.

Police patrols would be beefed up to prevent a recurrence, said Major General Estomo, who heads the Metropolitan Manila police.

"We know that this incident could spark fear among tourists, who plan to visit our country so we will make sure the slain victim will get justice and demonstrate that the police are always ready to provide service," Major General Estomo said in a statement.

The victim's girlfriend, Pamela Gaye Villanoza, told investigators she and Mr Stacey had just arrived in the capital region from a holiday trip in the western island province of Palawan and were walking to a laundry shop in the early hours after midnight when the suspects approached on a motorcycle.

One of them alighted and pointed a pistol at the couple while his companion parked the motorcycle a few metres away.

Mr Stacey grappled with the armed man and was shot and killed, she said.

Before fleeing, the gunman, who was wearing a black shirt and red athletic shorts, took the mobile phone and wallet of Mr Stacey's girlfriend, police said.

Two police officers stand at cordoned off street at night.

NZ man described as 'selfless and well-loved community leader'

Police said investigators would try to match a slug found in the area with slugs recovered from other recent crime scenes in the heavily populated metropolis to try to identify the suspects and assess how they operated.

Mr Stacey's family back in New Zealand has started an online fundraising effort to repatriate his body.

On the Givealittle post, Mr Stacey was described as "a selfless man" who always put others first, volunteering extensively with his local church group and community.

"Nick was generous with his time and resources and always acted with integrity," the post said.

"He loved to serve and was a well-loved kid's church leader … and was always first to volunteer when help was needed.

"The loss of such a young, kind-hearted, selfless and loving man, is absolutely devastating."

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Philippine police search was underway on Wednesday for two motorcycle-riding men who shot and killed a New Zealand man in a brazen street robbery that officials fear could scare foreign tourists away.

The 34-year-old tourist, Nicholas Peter Stacey, was fatally shot once in the chest while trying to wrest a pistol from one of the two robbers who held him up and his Filipina girlfriend on Sunday in a suburban street in Manila’s Makati financial district, police Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said.

While he described the deadly street robbery as an “isolated incident,” Estomo acknowledged it has the potential to frighten foreign tourists. Police patrols would be beefed up to prevent a recurrence, said Estomo, who heads the Metropolitan Manila police.

“We know that this incident could spark fear among tourists, who plan to visit our country so we will make sure the slain victim will get justice and demonstrate that the police are always ready to provide service,” Estomo said in a statement.

The slain victim’s girlfriend, Pamela Gaye Villanoza, told investigators that she and Stacey had just arrived in the capital region from a holiday trip in the western island province of Palawan and were walking to a laundry shop in the early hours after midnight when the suspects approached on a motorcycle.

One of them alighted and pointed a pistol at the couple while his companion parked the motorcycle a few meters away. Stacey grappled with the armed man and was shot and killed, she said.

Before fleeing, the gunman, who was wearing a black shirt and red athletic shorts, took the cellphone and wallet of Stacey’s girlfriend, police said.

Investigators would try to match a slug found in the area and compare it with slugs recovered from other recent crime scenes in the heavily populated metropolis to try to identify the suspects and assess how they operate, police said.

Stacey’s killing occurred amid high-profile gun attacks on two local politicians that underscore how criminal violence even against officials has persisted despite the government’s pledge to combat such violence.

Gunmen wounded Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr. of southern Lanao del Sur province and killed four of his bodyguards in an attack on their convoy Friday. Police said Wednesday they had killed one of the suspects in a clash.

Separately, unidentified men reportedly wearing police uniforms fired guns at the van of northern Aparri town Vice Mayor Rommel Alameda on Sunday, killing him and five companions in northern Nueva Vizcaya province. The suspects remain at large.

Crimes, decades-long Muslim and communist rebellions, and other security concerns have long hampered tourism in the Philippines, a Southeast Asian archipelago that offers white sand tropical beaches, diving and surfing resorts, heritage towns, rainforests and warm hospitality.

Suspect in killing of New Zealand tourist surrenders to police

A suspect in the February 19 killing of a New Zealand tourist in Makati City is already in police custody, Unang Balita reported on Friday.

Accompanied by his family members, the suspect, John Mhar Manalo, surrendered to the police in Pasig City early Friday morning.

Manalo was identified by three witnesses as the one who shot victim Nicholas Peter Stacey during a robbery attempt. He surrendered hours after the police named him as one of the two suspects in the killing.

“Marami pong tumawag sa atin na sinasabi na gusto na niyang sumuko. Kaya po natin siya hawak ngayon dahil sa kaniyang warrant of arrest,” said SPD District Director, Police Brigadier General Kirby John Kraft.

Manalo denied involvement in the killing of Stacey but is the subject of a warrant of arrest in connection with a separate robbery incident that occurred in Bulacan.

According to Jonathan Andal's report on "24 Oras," the suspect claimed that he only rented a car for the group that committed the crime.

“Yung lumabas po na picture po, 2020 pa po ‘yun. Bale nakita niyo naman po ‘yung itsura ko ngayon sa picture po na pina-aano po sa inyo,” Manalo said.

“Kaya handa po akong humarap sa inyo, patunayan po na wala po akong kasalanan malinis po yung konsensya ko,” he added.

However, the police believe that Manalo was the gunman behind the crime.

“Ang suspect ay may standing warrant of arrest sa Bulacan at Quezon City at may kaso siyang robbery with force and intimidation. Ang suspect ay miyembro ng criminal gang na nago-operate sa Taguig at karating lugar katulad ng Makati,” Kraft said.

“Iharap na lang ng suspect ang kaniyang alibi sa judicial process, pero ang PNP ay nanininindigan dahil ang supect ay kinilala, hindi lang isa kundi limang mga witnesses,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the police continued to conduct a follow-up operation on the motorcycle rider, who is said to be the suspect's accomplice.

Stacey was shot when he tried to defend his girlfriend from motorcycle-riding robbers who were victimizing her along Filmore Street in Barangay Palanan, Makati City on the wee hours of Sunday. —With Sheylin Untalan/KBK, GMA Integrated News

A New Zealand man has been killed in a shooting incident in the Philippines, while defending his girlfriend from muggers.

Local police have named the victim as Nick Stacey, 34, who died after allegedly being shot while out walking with his girlfriend shortly after midnight on Sunday, local time, in the city of Makati in the Metro Manila region.

ABS CBN News reported the couple were approached by two men on a motorcycle before one of the pair pointed a firearm at Stacey’s girlfriend.

“The victim then intervened and tried to grab the assailant’s weapon. But the suspect fired the gun and hit the victim’s left [side] chest,” the media outlet reported.

The two men are then said to have taken Stacey’s girlfriend’s cell phone and wallet before fleeing the area.

Police said the victim died at the scene.

Manhunt underway to find shooter

Local police are still hunting for the two men involved.

Back in New Zealand, Stacey’s family members have started a fundraising effort to bring their son and brother’s body home. A Givealittle page has been set up to help raise the money.

A post on the page revealed the young man had been in the Philippines visiting his girlfriend, Pamela, when the incident happened.

“The loss of such a young, kindhearted, selfless and loving man is absolutely devastating,” the family said.

He was described as a person who worked hard within his local community and church in Auckland.

“Always putting others first. He loved to serve and was a well-loved kids church leader...and was always first to volunteer when help was needed.”

The family also described Stacey’s voluntary work during the Covid lockdowns; shopping for and delivering groceries to vulnerable people during the pandemic.

“Nick was generous with his time and resources and always acted with integrity.”

Tourist from New Zealand shot dead in Manila

Photo of Staff Report

A tourist from New Zealand was killed during a robbery in Makati City on Sunday night, according to police reports.

Nicholas Peter Stacey, 34, was walking with his girlfriend, Pamela Villanoza, along Filmore Street in Barangay Palanan when they were approached by two motorcycle-riding men.

Stacey attempted to resist the robbery and grabbed the assailant’s weapon, prompting the attacker to shoot him in the left chest.

The suspects then took Villanoza’s mobile phone and wallet before fleeing towards Pasay City.

Stacey’s remains were brought to a Taguig City funeral home for autopsy.

NCRPO chief Gen. Jonnel Estomo ordered the Makati City Police Station to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation of the incident and a manhunt operation on the assailants.

“Pinaigting natin ang police visibility sa nasabing lugar upang maiwasan na mangyari muli ang ganitong krimen,” he added.

(“We are also increasing police visibility in the area to prevent similar crimes from happening again.”)

In a statement, Villanoza confirmed the police’s account of the incident, saying that the back rider alighted and pointed a gun at her.

“Nicholas tried to grab the gun from the back rider, and they struggled for a few seconds. But the back rider was too strong and managed to push Nicholas away. That’s when he shot him,” she said.

The police are still searching for the suspects, one of whom was wearing a black shirt and a pair of red jersey shorts with a face mask but no helmet.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of tourists in the city, prompting authorities to increase police visibility in the area.

“The safety and security of our tourists are of utmost importance to us, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that they are protected,” said Estomo.

“We are working closely with the local authorities to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Suspect in New Zealand tourist slay surrenders

MANILA, Philippines — One of the suspects in the killing of a tourist from New Zealand has surrendered to authorities, the police said.

The Southern Police District (SPD), in a report, said the alleged gunman, John Mar Manalo, turned himself in to police on Friday at around 1:11 a.m. in Pasig City.

Manalo is the suspect behind the holdup and killing of Nicholas Peter Stacey, 34, in Makati City last Sunday.

According to the SPD, Manalo was collared by virtue of his standing warrant of arrest for “robbery with violence against or intimidation” issued to him and two others by Judge Elenita Macatangay-Alviar of Branch 12 of the Regional Trial Court of Malolos City, Bulacan, on Sept. 5, 2022.

In an interview over ABS-CBN News, SPD chief Brig. Gen. Kirby John Kraft said Manalo had since denied playing a hand in the brazen killing of Stacey.

“Natatakot daw siya. Isa sa dahilan niya, hindi raw siya involved doon sa krimen na iyon,” he said.

(He said he was scared. Among his reasons for doing so was that he was not involved in the crime.)

This development came after Kraft held a press briefing on Thursday to publicly identify Manalo as one of the suspects and announce a P500,000 reward money for their arrest.

Police earlier said Stacey was walking with his girlfriend, Pamela Villanoza, along Filmore Street in Barangay Palanan when armed motorcycle-riding men waylaid them and declared a hold-up.

Stacey then tried to grab the assailant’s weapon, but the latter only fired the gun at the former’s left chest, resulting in his death, it added.

The suspects stole from Villanoza her phone and wallet before fleeing toward Pasay City.
