Nick Watney has been to hell and back on the PGA Tour.

Nick Watney

One of golf’s top performers for a spell — a Top 10 world ranking, a Presidents Cup appearance, five tour wins — the former Fresno State standout missed 18 straight cuts, was the first player to test positive for COVID-19, and finished No. 204 in the FedEx standings last season.

Most players in Watney’s position wouldn’t be able to regularly tee it up in PGA Tour events. They’d be scrambling in golf’s minor leagues. But as the 50th all-time career earnings leader with nearly $29 million, Watney utilized a one-time exemption for the 2021-22 campaign.

And, he’s using it to cash in big time.

Second in Sanderson Farms Championship

The 40-year-old Watney tied for second at 21-under par —a stroke behind winner Sam Burns on Sunday in the Sanderson Farms Championship. Combined with a 30th-place at the Fortinet Championship in Napa the previous week, he is fourth in the FedEx Cup standings after two events.

That’s quite a rebound for a player who ended last season ranked No. 681 in the world.

“There was definitely some lean times, especially last year, but I’m not trying to think about that anymore,” Watney told reporters on Sunday in Jackson, Mississippi. “I’m trying to continue to get better and this was a great step this week. I’m ready.”

Working Again With Butch Harmon

A back injury in 2016 contributed to Watney’s downward slide. So did losing his putting touch. Reconnecting with his former coach, Butch Harmon, this summer improved his putting and confidence. Watney led the Sanderson field in putting while putting together rounds of 65-66-71-65 and taking home $623,000.

Watney last won in August 2012 at The Barclays, a FedEx Cup playoff event. His other PGA Tour victories: the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (2007), the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines (2009), the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral (2011), and AT&T National (2011).

“I asked myself some really tough questions (last season,” Watney said. “You know, do I want to keep playing? Do I enjoy this? I’ve played long enough that I don’t really know anything else, you know? I think this proves to myself that what I’m working on is the right thing.”

How tournaments from 2003 helped Nick Watney thrive in 2021

Nick Watney's peformances from decades ago helped set up his second-place finish Sunday night.

Getty Images

Sixteen years ago, Nick Watney was a 24-year-old recent graduate from Fresno State who had played his way onto the PGA Tour. He was a budding talent who had earned his membership just like anyone else — full time status on the big show.

A career of ups and downs would follow, and perhaps you followed it yourself. The 2011 WGC win at Doral. His ascension to No. 9 in the world ranking. Numerous stints on the cover of GOLF Magazine. A precipitous drop outside the top 600 in the world, and then a sudden T2 finish this week. What is most interesting now is that every result from Watney’s entire PGA Tour career is important for his 2021-22 season, his 18th since turning pro, which started just weeks ago.

The $73,255 Watney earned in 2003 — with cuts made at the Reno-Tahoe Open and the John Deere Classic — was just as valuable to his 2021 as the four-week stretch this past summer where he netted zero top 30s. Because on the PGA Tour, all dollars made, from any year ever, matter for earning exemptions.

Watney’s recent few years have found him struggling, retreating back to work with Butch Harmon and plummeting to No. 660 in the world ranking. “Some lean times,” were his description of the last half-decade or so. But he’s still pegging it regularly on the Tour because of a Top 50 career earnings exemption he decided to use just weeks ago.

bryson dechambeau long drive

Tour Confidential: Bryson’s long-drive vibes, Lowry’s Ryder Cup gripes

Despite missing 18 consecutive cuts last season, Watney held on long enough to ensure he was 50th on the Tour’s all-time earnings list with around $28 million. Considering that Keegan Bradley trailed him by just $68,324 at the time, Watney was thankful for that T10 he notched in northern Nevada in 2003.

“That was, man, an amazing kind of lifeline,” Watney said of the exemption Sunday night. You never know when you’ll need exemptions, so they’re good to have. Watney has used them before, but none have helped out quite this well.

For the uninitiated, PGA Tour players’ accomplishments rank them on a priority list, and Watney’s exemption places him above many, many players who are ranked higher in the world. In other words, he had no trouble entering the Sanderson Farms this weekend, tying for second with Cameron Young, who sits much further down the priority list. It may not look fair on paper, but it’s an ode to the player Watney once was and the career he has amassed. And now that he’s backed it up with another near-victory, the exemption itself is completely validated, at least in the eyes of the PGA Tour. It also helped keep him from having to compete in Korn Ferry Tour Q-School, a battleground that requires great form to advance through.

Out of sight, out of mind in terms of Q-School. Watney’s Sunday result netted him $623,000, the most money he’s won in an event in more than three years. It’ll rush him up more than 300 spots in the world ranking and to 4th in the FedEx Cup. It’s way too early for that last figure to matter, but about 10 months from now, when Watney’s exemption is all used up, he’ll be thinking about his FedEx Cup rank. He’ll be thinking about that T2 Sunday, and perhaps even that T10 from 2003.

“This was the plan,” he said to wrap up his time with the press Sunday. “Use that [exemption], because I was literally number 50, and then play well and off we go.

“So, so far so good.”

Nick Watney won the opening event of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs, The Barclays at Bethpage Black in New York.

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Nick Watney salvaged what had been a mediocre season Sunday at The Barclays with a victory that came at an ideal time.

Watney turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead in a decisive four-hole stretch around the turn at Bethpage Black, and no one got closer than two shots. Watney made a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 2-under-par 69 to take the opening event of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoffs.

Watney, who earned $1.44 million for his fifth PGA Tour victory, won by three shots over second-place Brandt Snedeker (70). Watney goes from 49th to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings and is assured a shot at the $10 million bonus at the Tour Championship next month in Atlanta.

Watney finished at 10-under 274.

(CNN) -- American golfer Nick Watney produced a fine closing round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Florida to secure the third PGA Tour win of his career.

The 2009 runner-up teed off two shots behind overnight leader Dustin Johnson on the Blue Monster course at Doral on Sunday, but summoned a five-under-par 67 to steal victory away from his compatriot.

"Top-10 finishes are nice," Watney told the PGA Tour website after claiming the $1.4 million first prize. "But winning is what counts out here, and that's how you're measured. To win this tournament against this field, it's a huge honor. I'm very excited. I'm very proud."

By the time he arrived at the last, the 29-year-old Watney had opened up a one-shot lead over close friend Johnson -- with whom he shares a coach in Butch Harmon and regular practice rounds.

Johnson's challenge was extinguished when Watney made a birdie at the par-five 18th -- the same hole he had double-bogeyed on Saturday.

"I wasn't nervous. I really wanted to take care of business and to grasp this opportunity," said Watney, who rose to 15th in the world rankings after his win. "I actually love that feeling; you don't get it too often.

"That's why you play. I'm thinking, 'I have to be in this moment -- right now -- because this is all that counts.' "

Johnson was left to reflect on an opportunity missed, having bogeyed the 16th on his way to a disappointing closing round of 71. But he was full of praise for Watney.

"Nick is a good friend of mine," Johnson said. "I told him walking off that if I was going to lose to somebody, I was glad it was him. And he played really well. I didn't give him the tournament. He earned it. He played well."

Tiger Woods produced a stirring final round of 66 to achieve a tie for 10th -- his first top-10 finish in an official PGA Tour event since the 2010 U.S. Open last June.

"I want to win golf tournaments and I didn't do that this week," Woods said. "But I showed positive signs for the next time I play, which is a good thing."

Woods' round of 66 on Sunday was matched by his 22-year-old U.S. Ryder Cup teammate Rickie Fowler , who finished eighth to make it back-to-back top-10s in WGC events.

Meanwhile, world No. 3 Luke Donald slipped out of contention with a closing round of 72. The Englishman was seeking a second WGC title of the season after winning the match play event in February, but his challenge faded with bogeys at the 11th and 13th holes.

Donald had to make do with seventh, with fellow Europeans Anders Hansen of Denmark and Italy's Francesco Molinari in a tie for third.

Sahith Theegala lines up a putt on the seventh green during round one of the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship.

The roars have died down a bit with the Ryder Cup in the rearview mirror, but the birdies continued to flow as the PGA Tour resumed the 2021-2022 season at the Sanderson Farms Championship. And no one scored better on Thursday than one of the tour's newest members.

Rookie Sahith Theegala posted a bogey-free 64 to grab the first-round lead in Mississippi. Not bad for someone who didn't have his tour card a month ago.

RELATED: Jim 'Bones' Mackay coming back to caddie full time on the PGA Tour

But after a missed cut in the first event of the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the former All-American and 2020 Haskins Award winner at Pepperdine finished T-4 and sixth in the final two events to move on up to the PGA Tour, where he started the season with a T-47 in Napa.

"I don't think I've had a lot of time to think about all this stuff too, so it just feels like I'm kind of just on a roll and I'm not really thinking about big situations or stuff like that," Theegala told reporters after the round at the Country Club of Jackson. "Just feels like I'm playing golf. So that's helped a little bit not having expectations, kind of just being on a free roll the whole time."

The 23-year-old is certainly on a roll off the tee. He hit 11 of 14 fairways on Thursday while averaging 322.3 yards per pop and picking up more than 1.5 strokes against the field.

"The driver's always been what's kind of been my weakest part of my game and that's what took me kind of the next level in college was getting a driver dialed in and started not hitting it out of play as much," Theegala said. "But, yeah, I got a new driver after I missed the first cut at Korn Ferry Finals, went to Ping, did a little bit of work there and they set me up with a new driver. It's a longer driver. I'm like, if I'm going to hit it off line, I might as well hit it a little bit further and funny enough I'm hitting it way straighter. So that helped a little bit, seeing something new."

And golf fans are seeing a new face at the top of a PGA Tour leader board. But it might be one they should start getting used to.

Here are our other takeaways from Day 1 of the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Harold Varner III's (extra) happy mood

Varner looked like he'd share the first-round lead with Theegala when he stuffed his final approach on the ninth hole to five feet. But he missed the birdie try to settle for 65. Not that he seemed upset at all after.

"This is the first time I'm not worried about golf," Varner told PGA Tour SiriusXM Radio after his round. "We're really excited."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harold Varner III (@hv3_golf)

You see, Varner's wife Amanda Singleton is expecting the couple's first child next week. So, yeah, he's got a lot on his mind right now.

Still, a nine-birdie round is something to be excited about as well. And so would finally earning a first PGA Tour title before welcoming a first kid.

"I hate when people are just always like, 'When you going to win?' It's not like I'm not trying. It's not easy," Varner said. "So it's a great opportunity, it's always going to be a challenge I'm just excited for it, and I'm not too worried about what anyone else is doing. I used to get caught up in that and I'm just super thankful to be over that step in my life."

Canadians invade the South

At one point during the morning wave, Canadians held the top three spots on the leader board. Those three Maple Leaf flags were still flying high by day's end with Roger Sloane tied for fourth and Adam Hadwin and Corey Conners both tied for seventh.

RELATED: Bryson DeChambeau continues to advance at long drive event

Not that this is too surprising. Canadian Nick Taylor won this event in 2014, the second year it was played at C.C. of Jackson. And Conners finished runner-up here in 2018.

1344130360

Corey Conners prepares to play his shot on the fifth hole during round one of the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Conners looked like he might be headed for a really special round when he made the turn in 30 and on a streak of five consecutive birdies. Not that he even realized it.

"I really didn’t even know I made five in a row until I was signing my scorecard and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.'" Conners said.

Must be nice, huh?

Is that … Nick Watney?

1344123629

Nick Watney plays his shot from the 13th tee during round one of the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Yep, it sure is. The five-time PGA Tour winner is one shot off the lead after firing a first-round 65. And that's kind of a big deal for someone who hasn't had a top-10 on tour in more than two years.

After finishing 204th in the FedEx Cup standings last season, Watney remained on tour this season by using his one-time exemption for being top 50 on the all-time money list. The 40-year-old used the old one-shot-at-a-time mantra during a round that included six birdies and an eagle.

"I've never done well if I thought, 'Oh, I have to shoot X under.' I think I do my best when I go out and try to play the shot in front of me," said Watney, whose last PGA Tour win came nine years ago. "I know that's super cliche, but that's truly how I play my best. That's what I was even trying to do today. Just to execute my best on that shot."

Hey, it's worked a lot throughout his career. And maybe it's starting to work again.

*  3 Time All-American Golfer

Nick is one of the most accomplished Sacramento area golfers. He attended Davis High School and played for his uncle, Mike Watney, at Fresno State: where he was a 3-time All-American. Despite the family history, Nick wasn't offered a scholarship and had to walk on to the team.  He turned pro in 2003 and has become one of the more consistent golfers on the tour winning a total of 10 tournaments including 5 PGA Tour victories.

2011 was a big year for Nick as he won several tournaments.  The biggest  was at the WGC - Cadillac Championship at Doral.  He then won the AT&T National where he shot a 27 on the back nine which tied the second lowest nine hole record on the PGA Tour.  He was a member of the 2011 President’s Cup Team where he defeated K.J. Choi on the final day to give the United States a distinct advantage over the International Team, leading them to the Championship.  During that time Nick ascended into the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.  He finished the 2011 season ranked third on the PGA Tour money list.

Other highlights include his double eagle on the par-five, 17th hole of the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club.  He became only the third man ever to do that in U.S. Open history.  He then won the Barclays, the first of four FedEx Cup events to take the outright lead in the FedEx Cup Standings.  It was his first playoff event victory in his career.  Nick continues today to be one of the top golfers on the PGA Tour.

Gerina Mendoza and Nick Watney Win 2023 Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort

' src=

Gerina Mendoza, Nick Watney Win 2023 Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort By One Stroke Over Angela Stanford and Bob Estes.

Horseshoe Bay Resort’s acclaimed private Summit Rock golf course played host to a friendly clash of PGA Tour and LPGA stars Saturday (October 28) in the scenic Texas Hill Country. Former LPGA star and Solheim Cup hero Gerina Mendoza made four birdies over the one-round, 10-hole stroke play match to lead her partner – Austinite and five-time winner on the PGA Tour Nick Watney – to victory in the fifth-annual Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort.

The duo outlasted their opponents LPGA major winner Angela Stanford and PGA Tour winner and former University of Texas American Bob Estes by a single stroke to claim the Shootout Champions’ Belt Buckles and bragging rights until next year. Stanford holed a birdie putt on the last hole of the 10-hole match to bring her and Estes within a stroke of Mendoza and Watney but Mendoza’s sharp play and a clutch birdie on the par-4 seventh hole by Watney helped them finish at five-under and claim victory by one stroke.

Mendoza birdied holes 2, 3, 4 and 8 and also narrowly missed a birdie try on the first hole and nearly holed out a would-be birdie pitch the par-five 5th hole. Of her stellar play, Mendoza said, “It was fun to play well out here with some inspiration from the crowd and getting to enjoy the beautiful conditions on this outstanding Summit Rock golf course.” Watney joked that he felt like he won the match on the first tee by choosing the dialed-in Mendoza as his partner.

2002 PGA Championship winner Rich Beem, a former Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort winner himself, was on hand providing commentary for a TV taping of the event which will air in November on Golf Life TV.

Gallery members enjoyed the tournament action up close while taking a scenic walk on the dramatic, towering Jack Nicklaus-designed Summit Rock course. Playing along towering ridges overlooking Lake LBJ and plummeting through lush valleys and primitive limestone beds, this quintessential Texas Hill Country golf course was unquestionably the fifth star of the event.

Nick Watney 1st player on PGA Tour to test positive for coronavirus

Bob Harig explains what it means for Nick Watney to be the first PGA Tour player to test positive for the coronavirus and how it affects the rest of the field. (2:06)

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Nick Watney became the first player on the PGA Tour to test positive for COVID-19 and withdrew before the second round of the RBC Heritage after learning of his positive test on Friday.

Now the hope is that Watney did not spread the virus to others.

Watney, 39, was at Harbour Town Golf Club awaiting the results of his test. Brooks Koepka said he stood near Watney in the parking lot, and another player, Si Woo Kim , said he passed him on the driving range.

Rory McIlroy , who saw Watney before his round from a distance on the practice putting green, said he received word of the positive test via a text from Watney.

"He feels badly that he was here today at the golf course," McIlroy said. "I said, look, it's fine. You never know. So I said to him, if I was in your position, I probably would have been here, too. Look, at this point, you just have to concentrate on getting better and getting healthy.

"It sucks for him especially. If you contact it, that's fine, but then it's the fact that who have you come into contact with and who you might have exposed. We're still in the middle of a pandemic. Until this thing's over, we all just have to stay vigilant and keep your distance and wear our masks if we're going out in public and keep washing our hands."

It was unclear if Watney had a COVID-19 test at the course or at local accommodations. He had symptoms consistent with the virus, consulted with a physician and, after taking a test, was found to be positive, according to a PGA Tour release.

Watney shot 74 in the first round, and his playing partners, Vaughn Taylor and Luke List , were notified of the result through nine holes of the second round Friday.

"I was a little shocked, to be honest," Taylor said. "Heart started racing, got a little nervous. Just hope Nick's doing well and we get through this. I didn't have any close contact with Nick yesterday. We kept our space. We didn't shake hands. Right after the round, I washed my hands. Nick never coughed or sneezed. So I feel comfortable."

Watney, a five-time PGA Tour winner, missed the cut at last week's Charles Schwab Challenge, and it is unclear how he spent the weekend. He traveled on his own to Hilton Head on Tuesday and did not take one of the tour-arranged charter flights.

According to the tour's Health & Safety protocols, Watney and others who came to the RBC Heritage apart from the charters were required to take a COVID-19 test on site. Watney took the first COVID-19 test on Tuesday, and it came back negative.

"Nick will have the PGA Tour's full support throughout his self-isolation and recovery period under CDC guidelines," the tour said in a statement. "For the health and well-being of all associated with the tournament and those within the community, the tour has begun implementing its response plan in consultation with medical experts including working with those who may have had close contact with Nick."

According to the tour, a total of 369 players, caddies and essential personnel underwent on-site testing before the start of the tournament, with no positive results. Last Saturday, 98 people took a test as a condition of taking one of the charters. There were 954 total tests without a positive result in the first two weeks of the tour's restart following the 13-week shutdown amid the coronavirus pandemic .

"By the end of the year, there's going to be 200,000 deaths in the U.S. alone from COVID-19,'' McIlroy said. "So to think that us on the PGA Tour, none of us were going to get it ... I don't think anyone thought that. I think the consensus was someone was going to get it at some point, and Nick's the one that's got it, and he's self-isolating and doing what he has to do."

The tour's Health & Safety guidelines stipulate that Watney now self-quarantine for 10 days. He would be allowed to drive to his home in Austin, Texas, but he cannot fly. If he chooses not to drive, it is unknown if he would be required to stay in South Carolina, but the tour covers isolating costs if a player has followed the protocols.

"The whole plan put in place was not if but when somebody tests positive," Jordan Spieth said. "What's the protocol, and what's the next steps? So I feel confident just in being on those phone calls in what the PGA Tour's going to do going forward here, and hopefully contact tracing doesn't lead to anybody else testing positive within the bubble.

"South Carolina's open. If you go anywhere to a restaurant, there's a lot of people there right now. So I guess that's probably the best case is that he got it on his own outside. But again, it was not an 'if' scenario. You've got to plan for it to happen, and hopefully it's very much contained."
