  • CarlosFR 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable Nile Cruise on MS Mayflower Thoroughly enjoyed a 3-night/4-day cruise from Aswan to Luxor with Mayfair Cruises on their ship the M.S. Mayflower, which was in great shape, clean, and included many on-board amenities. There was a sun deck covering the entire top of the boat and lounge areas on each deck to relax or gather with friends or family. My cabin was small but had a large, comfortable bed taking up most of the room. Closet space was ample with a small safe. A large bottle of water was provided daily. The bathroom was small but nice and clean. Down-time between the daily excursions and meals was spent on the nice sun deck. The excursions to the Nile temples were a highlight for this Egypt trip. Our cruise guide Adel was very knowledgeable and spent the time to highlight unique things at each place visited, and we came away with a better understanding of Egypt and its history. It was nice to return to the Mayflower after a long day to dine, rest and relax as the boat cruised to the next location. On-board service was very good, especially with the wait staff in the dining room. Enjoyed each meal service, especially the dinner that highlighted Egyptian dishes, but just wish that was offered every night! Read more Written January 27, 2024

  • JoeCBansteadUK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Recommended I stayed on the Royal Lily for four nights in December as part of a small group. Staff throughout pleasant, efficient and helpful with a good understanding of English. We boarded in Luxor and sailed to Aswan with various stops en route. Whilst this boat is rated as 5 star it still had to berth at the various stops with the rest of the river cruisers - we were never more than 2 deep on the docks, but I suspect that this could be 4 deep depending upon arrival time etc. Not a problem as the transit across the boats is easy. The river was apparently quieter than normal during this peak period - probably due to the well reported problems elsewhere in the region. Security at docks and sites visited was reassuringly clearly visible. Well appointed cabin - clean & comfortable. Necessarily compact bathroom worked well. Please note that when moored alongside another boat the curtains need to be closed for privacy. The style of the cabin was more old school/wood panelling than modern stainless steel/glass. Suited me perfectly. Public areas were spacious enough, clean and modern. The sun deck with a small pool and bar was well equipped and comfortable with plenty of shade. Food in the water level restaurant (with plenty of windows/natural light) was to a high standard, with plenty of choice to suit all tastes, be they Arabic, European or Asian cuisine. 3 nights were buffet style - 1 a preordered table d’hote menu. Buffet breakfasts were superb, with a wide variety of dishes. Speciality coffees were available at extra cost - well worth it. Beer and wine available at reasonable prices for for a predominantly muslim country. On board WiFi was a bit patchy at peak times, but acceptable for my needs - basically e mail & WA. For those with limited mobility there is no lift. Recommended, but wouldn’t want to travel on a boat of lesser star rating! Read more Written December 31, 2023

  • 818merediths 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nile Done Right This was a lovely introduction to the Nile. Rooms were very well appointed and the staff was incredibly friendly and kind. Swimming on the upper deck with the Nile rolling by was magic. Food was great (so much food!). Entertainment every night was fun. We did upgrade our room when we arrived at a discount. So that might have influenced my feelings a bit. But I truly felt this was something special. Read more Written July 13, 2023
  • P679WDkayl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 4 nights of bliss on the Sonesta St. george The boat was amazing, our room was big and clean and just pure luxury. On arrival we found a basket of fruit and wine in our room. The food on the boat was fantastic, something for everyone's taste, From steak, pasta, fish, chicken and the desserts were incredible. We took so many photos and the views from the boat were amazing. Shout out to Mina, the assistant manager of the bar, he looked after us so well, Afternoon tea on the top deck was a real treat with incredible views. The swimming pool was just right and there was a seated area that was covered in to help you escape the sun. There was entertainment every night in the bar/lounge, big comfortable armchairs. I bought an alabya to really feel part of Egyptian night. The boat was moored right on front of Edfu temple which is lit up at night and was an incredible backdrop to photos. I highly recommend taking a trip on this boat. Read more Written July 1, 2023
  • DouglasL955 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful and Elegant The Farah is a beautiful ship. Compared to the other Nile Cruise Boats it makes the others look old and unkempt. The staff are absolutely wonderful and the food is excellent. As in all 3rd world countries, beware of the ice and uncooked foods. When selecting cabins stay away from low number rooms and stick to rooms numbered above 307 and 407. Below that number the rooms are basically inside cabins. If you're going to cruise the Nile make sure you have a sliding door to the outside. Read more Written May 30, 2023
  • jacobarturo 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Ok food, leaky shower, somewhat inappropriate behaviors The cruise itself was smooth and nice, however the room we stayed in had issues with a leaking shower. The food was okay, at times was repetitive and somewhat bland. The workers were fantastic at their jobs, but I did not necessarily appreciate the inappropriate looks and behaviors they had to my wife during this trip. Still, I do commend the work ethic they had. • P3784MHerikas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing cruise - great staff and food. Doesn't disappoint! We very much enjoyed this cruise, the first we have ever been on, and it was an easy way to see the main sights in Upper Egypt without needing to make arrangements and do research on each. The staff on board the boat was exceptional, offering help and advice at all turns, very courteous and friendly throughout our trip. We arrived a bit early, and they prepared our cabin right away. The cabin was very comfortable with a lovely view of the Nile from the large window. The staff regularly checked to see if we needed more towels or anything of the sort. The food was great, and the staff went out of their way to offer to make special dishes (grilled chicken, for example, or grilled steak) for one of my kids who is a picky eater. I would definitely recommend this for a pleasant and seamless trip to Upper Egypt. Honestly, I can’t say enough about how great the staff and the food were. Excellent service all around. There were only three areas that I saw for improvement which I will mention for those who are considering different options. The first was that though our guide, Mustafa, was very friendly and punctual, he seemed to want to finish our visits as quickly as possible and did not show a lot of enthusiasm for the sites. I recognize we visited during Ramadan, and that he was fasting (not easy to take tours around during the heat of the day without water), so I would like to think he might be a more attentive tour guide outside of Ramadan. But overall the group felt he was giving us the minimum of information and a bit impatient and unwilling to wait for members of the group who took longer to move through the site. The Wifi on this boat is essentially non-existent. While this did not make a big difference to us in general, there were moments - like when we finished the tour and needed an uber to the airport - when it was really inconvenient. It also made it hard for us to look up additional information on the sights or use google maps to see what else we would like to visit in a town, for example, or to check in to our flights. When I desperately needed an uber to get to the airport, a staff person at reception was able to give me a hotspot, so that is always an option in a pinch. Finally, the jacuzzi did not work. Given how small the pool was (this was disappointing to the kids), we would have really enjoyed to use the jacuzzi in the evenings. When I asked at the front desk, they confirmed it was out of order. I would have preferred they told us up front that this was not available and apologize, since we had been told this would be available. Again, not a big deal, but given the price of the cruise, we sort of expected everything to be up and running. Oh, one more thing. The massage/spa person was very aggressive and at one point I was laying down to nap on my deck chair - when I opened my eyes, to my surprise, he was sitting in the chair next to me, looking at me and said ‘don’t go to sleep now. When do you want to schedule your massage?’ He had already approached me and invited me into the massage room to make his pitch, so I really didn’t need a second offer. I knew where to find him :) I had told him I did not plan on getting a message, so the insistence was a bit annoying. Read more Written May 1, 2023

Truly the most amazing staff - everyone was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The views from the boat as we went up the Nile were truly unforgettable. Mustafa was a fantastic guide and catered to our group which was comprised of several family with kids of varying ages. Seeing the different sites was just an incredible experience and each one was different. The restaurant and reception staff were amazing - so friendly and always smiling. The food was great - different every meal and catered to a wide variety of tastes. The room was wonderful as well - and the view outside as we were sailing was just breathtaking. • clive613 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Nile Cruise through Century Travel I booked a 9 day Nile holiday through Century Travel in Cyprus because it was recommended. The flight timings were excellent and the recommended boat seemed very good. After booking our flights were changed with a 7 hr stopover in Cairo and about 8 days before departing the boat was changed. The Sonesta St George Hotel is supposedly 5-star but we found the rooms to be very dated indeed and the food was very poor. On boarding the Sonesta St George cruise boat the surroundings were lavish and staff attentive. The cabin however was dated and bathroom dirty - see pictures below. The public areas were lovely but it was a back to back cruise, that is Luxor to Aswan and then back to Luxor. The standard definitely dropped on the return leg e.g. dirty cutlery the last night. The most disappointing thing was the reaction by Century Travel. They could not accept that the holiday package was not up to standard - in fact they blamed everything on the in-country agent. I shall not be booking through Century Travel again and do not recommend this holiday at all. Read more Written April 11, 2023

After lunch, it will be time to disembark again, this time for a visit to several ancient tombs, including the Tomb of Baqet III, the Tomb of Khety, the Tomb of Amenemhet, and the Tomb of Khnumhotep II. Since these tombs are somewhat off the main tourist trail, they are usually only visited by tourists who have booked a really long cruise, such as our 15-day Cairo to Aswan Nile cruise package.

After some amazing sightseeing, everyone will transfer back to the ship where you will have a bit of time to yourself before dinner is served in the evening. Day 11 – Luxor West Bank Sightseeing

Enjoy a good hearty breakfast on the ship in Luxor, and then it will be time for you to disembark for an excursion which you will almost certainly never forget. Today, you will visit the Luxor West Bank to explore two extraordinary historical sites which are amongst Egypt’s most treasured and most popular ancient monuments.

First, you will be taken to visit Valley of the Kings, and ancient royal necropolis which houses more than 60 royal tombs, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen which was discovered and excavated by Sir Howard Carter in 1922. Your next stop will be at the beautifully intact rock-cut Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

After an incredibly fascinating morning viewing these timeless wonders, you will head back to the boat to enjoy a lovely onboard lunch, and then the remainder of the afternoon is yours. In the early evening, another fine dinner will be served, and your day will finally end with you getting a wonderful night’s sleep on the water at Luxor.

Day 12 – East Bank Sightseeing and Cruise to Edfu

Enjoy a wholesome breakfast, and then it will be time for you to once again disembark, this time for an excursion to the Luxor East Bank where you will be visiting another two amazing ancient relics. Your first stop today will be at the indescribable Karnak Temple complex. Thousands of years ago, this was, in fact, a city of temples that grew over a period of more than 2,000 years. These days, much if it lies ruins, but there is still so much to see, and just the sheer size of the complex makes it an attraction not to be missed.

After Karnak, you will then be taken to visit the ancient Luxor Temple which is hugely popular amongst tourists, many of whom visit the site during the day and again at night to see the entire place illuminated.

Finally, it will be time to return to your ship for a good lunch and some well-deserved relaxation time as it begins cruising to Edfu. Enjoy a lovely Galabya Party onboard, and another wonderful diner before eventually retiring to your cabin where you will be spending the night on the water at Edfu.

Day 13 – Sightseeing at Edfu and Kom Ombo, and Cruise to Aswan

After another nice onboard breakfast, you will enjoy a very pleasant excursion that will see you visiting Egypt’s best-preserved temple. Edfu temple lay buried beneath the desert sands for thousands of years after it was abandoned by the Romans, and it is this which has helped to preserve it to such an extent.

After Edfu Temple, everyone will head back to the ship, and it will begin cruising to Kom Ombo, with a tasty lunch being served along the way. At Kom Ombo, you will once again disembark, this time to visit the truly fascinating Kom Ombo Temple. Although this was built as a solitary temple, it is, in fact, two temples, with one being an exact mirror image of the other. The one was dedicated to Horus the falcon-headed god, while the other was dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god.

Next, you will board the ship again, and it will begin cruising to Aswan where you will be spending the night onboard. Enjoy a lovely dinner and a nice relaxing evening before retiring for the night.

Day 14 – Aswan Sightseeing Tour

Today’s sightseeing begins shortly after breakfast, with your first stop being at the incredibly impressive Aswan High Dam. Next, you will be taken to visit the truly spectacular Philae Temple which today, sits on a new location after having being moved in its entirety from lower ground. At one point in Egypt’s past, this temple was one of the most significant places of worship, so great effort was putting into saving it from being destroyed forever by the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the Aswan High Dam was completed.

You last and final stop for the day will be at the very interesting Nubian Museum, and then you will be heading back to the cruise ship for lunch. A bit later in the day, there will be a very enjoyable Nubian Show onboard, and as usual, an excellent dinner will be served in the evening. Tonight, which is the last night of your 15 Day Cairo to Aswan Nile Cruise package, will be spent on the water at Aswan.

Day 15 – Disembarkation, and Transfer to Cairo for Final Departure

Unfortunately for everyone on the Mövenpick MS Darakum cruise, today marks the end of an incredibly journey, but before you leave the ship, be sure to enjoy one last onboard breakfast. After breakfast, and after you have checked-out, you will disembark, and one of our tour managers will be there to meet you and to escort you to Aswan Airport where you will be boarding a flight to Cairo.

On arrival at Cairo International Airport, you will once again be met by a tour manager, and they will escort you to the international terminal where you will then be able to board your flight back home. Your journey through Ancient Egypt may have come to an end, but the memories you have collected will stay with you forever.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

nile cruise darakum

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

nile cruise darakum

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

nile cruise darakum

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

nile cruise darakum

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

nile cruise darakum

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

nile cruise darakum

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

nile cruise darakum

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Read more Written 27 January 2024

Read more Written 31 December 2023

Read more Written 1 July 2023
Read more Written 30 May 2023
  • jacobarturo 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Ok food, leaky shower, somewhat inappropriate behaviors The cruise itself was smooth and nice, however the room we stayed in had issues with a leaking shower. Read more Written 1 May 2023
  • HeatherKennedy 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely fantastic experience on the Royal Lily. The staff truly is the best part and elevated our experience! The most wonderful experience. Read more Written 11 April 2023
