We can recommend the Bluefield Factory and Bluefield Tea Gardens. You will get a small tour around the factory to see how the tea process works. The prices at the factory’s shop are 300% of what it should be so maybe just wait and buy this in town.

Walk to World’s End near Nuwara Eliya

Get up really early in the morning and get ready for a good 4 km walk to World’s End. World’s End is located in the Horton Plains National Park which has a UNESCO  status. The 9.5 km round trip takes around three hours. Keep an eye on the weather conditions; rain or fog can totally ruin the experience. Rainy season in this region lasts from April to September.

It’s better to say what’s the worst time to visit. From June till the end of August, it will be the monsoon.

How to get to Nuwara Eliya?

Nuwara Eliya is in between the world-famous Sri Lanka’s most beautiful train ride between Kandy and Ella .

A ticket from Kandy will cost you around $2,50 / 400 LKR. The ride takes 4 hours from Kandy and has been mentioned as one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. ( Get your tickets here )

Locals and tourists both use the train so expect the same friendly smiles or questions. Visiting Sri Lanka in high season? Try to buy your 2nd or 3rd class tickets in advance since there are limited tourist seats available.

Tip: Get one of the early trains as they don’t really stick to their schedule. You don’t want to drive through the tea plantation while it’s dark outside.

Nuwara Eliya: 10 fun things to do & ultimate guide

Nuwara Eliya Sunrise

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, Nuwara Eliya is like a slice of British countryside dropped right into the tropics.

Rolling green hills, misty mornings, and acres upon acres of tea plantations make this a unique but compelling region of Sri Lanka.

It’s a place that feels wonderfully laid-back, yet the landscapes are absolutely jaw-dropping. And, of course, the tea is as fresh as it gets!

Being in Nuwara Eliya feels a bit like you’ve been teleported to the English countryside, but with a distinctly Sri Lankan twist.

It’s all about embracing a slower lifestyle, getting back to nature, and soaking in unforgettable views.

So, grab a cup of tea (to set the mood, of course) and let me convince you to add Nuwara Eliya to your Sri Lanka itinerary.

If you prefer a video over an article, then I’d recommend watching my Nuwara Eliya vlog:

In my ultimate guide, I share the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya, as well as how to get there, where to stay, and top tips for visiting.

How to get to Nuwara Eliya

Trust me when I say that getting to Nuwara Eliya is part of the adventure. It took us a lot longer than it should because we kept stopping to take photos and soak in the epic views!

Depending on where you’re coming from, there are a few ways to reach Sri Lanka’s tea country.

By train: I’d recommend this option if you’re after those Instagram-worthy views. The train ride to Nuwara Eliya is famously scenic, offering breathtaking vistas of Sri Lanka’s countryside, waterfalls, and tea plantations.

Waterfall near Nuwara Eliiya

You’ll need to catch a train to Nanu Oya, which is the nearest station to Nuwara Eliya, about 8 kilometres away. From there, a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride will get you into town.

By bus: I’d recommend the bus if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option. Buses head to Nuwara Eliya from major cities like Colombo and Kandy.

It’s a longer journey, but it’s a good way to travel like a local and see the countryside from a different perspective. Plus, it’s incredibly cost-effective.

By car: Renting a car or hiring a driver might be a bit pricier, but it offers the most flexibility. This is the option we took, as we had a private driver for our entire trip.

I loved it because you can take breaks whenever you like, explore off-the-beaten-path spots, and enjoy the journey at your own pace.

Bridge in Sri Lanka

Our driver was brilliant at pointing out hidden gems that we never would have discovered without him. If you want his details, feel free to DM me on Instagram !

I personally would not recommend driving in Sri Lanka. It’s utterly chaotic and none of the driving rules we have in the UK seem to be followed (apart from the fact that they drive on the left side of the road).

Weather in Nuwara Eliya

The climate in Nuwara Eliya is a delightful departure from the tropical heat of the rest of Sri Lanka.

Here you’ll find cool, crisp air, misty mornings, and the kind of weather that invites you to cosy up with a warm cup of tea.

It’s a refreshing change, especially if you’re coming from the humid coastal areas.

Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka

Nuwara Eliya, fondly known as “Little England” for its temperate, cool climate, sits at an elevation of over 1,800 metres above sea level.

This elevation is the magic behind its cooler temperatures. Here, the weather is mild year-round, with temperatures hovering between 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F).

It’s a stark contrast to the tropical climate elsewhere on the island, making it the perfect escape from the heat.

But don’t be fooled by the daytime’s mild weather. Nights can get quite chilly, especially during the December to February winter season, when temperatures can dip close to freezing.

Where we stayed at Goatfell Hotel , they even popped a small hot water bottle into our beds as part of the turn-down service. Such a nice and much-needed touch!

Rainfall is another characteristic of Nuwara Eliya’s climate, with the monsoon seasons bringing in the most rain.

The main monsoon season runs from October to December, when the town gets a good soaking, transforming the landscape into a lush, verdant paradise.

Croquet at Goatfell

The intermittent showers during the rest of the year keep the area beautifully green and the waterfalls flowing. Fellow Brits, I’m sure you’ll feel right at home!

So, when you’re packing for Nuwara Eliya, think layers. I’d recommend bringing along some warm clothes for the evenings and a waterproof jacket for those unexpected showers.

Plus, I’d suggest packing a good pair of walking shoes for exploring all the natural beauty this mountain town has to offer.

Best things to do in Nuwara Eliya

There are a number of fun things to do in Nuwara Eliya and I’ve shared my top picks below.

1. Tea plantations

No visit to Nuwara Eliya is complete without a visit to one of the many tea plantations in the region.

The emerald-green tea plantations that carpet the rolling hills are not only beautiful but also a key part of the region’s heritage.

Pedro Tea Plantations

While there are a few options to choose from, personally I’d recommend a visit to the Pedro Tea Estate or the Labookellie Tea Centre.

Here you can embark on a guided tour to learn about the intricate process of tea making, from plucking the leaves to the final stages of production.

Tea Pickers Nuwara Eliya

The experience is often rounded off with a tea tasting (the best part if you ask me!), where you can sip on various grades of tea.

It’s a great way to gain some insight into the subtle differences in flavour and aroma that make Ceylon tea a global favourite.

2. Horton Plains National Park and World’s End

This national park is perfect for nature enthusiasts and hikers, comprising a mixture of vast grasslands and beautiful cloud forests.

The park’s most famous feature, World’s End, is an breathtaking cliff with a sheer drop of about 880 metres.

World's End

I’d suggest starting the trek to World’s End early in the morning to avoid the mist that rolls in later, which can obscure the panoramic views that span as far as the southern coastline on clear days.

Along the way, keep an eye out for sambar deer, the occasional leopard, and a variety of endemic bird species.

3. Gregory Lake

Constructed during the British era as a reservoir, Gregory Lake is now a popular recreational spot.

You can rent a swan-shaped pedal boat for a leisurely ride on the water, where you can enjoy the cool climate and picturesque surroundings.

Gregory Lake Nuwara Eliya

The lakeside park is perfect for picnics, leisurely walks, or simply relaxing with a book.

During certain times of the year, the lake area becomes a hub for local festivities and markets, offering a glimpse into the vibrant local culture.

4. Victoria Park

Named in honour of Queen Victoria, this beautifully manicured park is a tranquil escape in the heart of Nuwara Eliya.

It’s an ideal spot for bird watchers, with the chance to spot several species of birds.

The park’s well-kept flower beds, mini train rides, and playgrounds make it a hit with families and anyone looking to simply unwind.

5. Hakgala Botanical Garden

Just a short drive from Nuwara Eliya, Hakgala Botanical Garden is located at the foot of the Hakgala Rock.

Hakgala Botanical Garden

The garden is known for its collection of orchids and roses, with something in bloom year-round amidst its cool misty climate.

I’d definitely recommend this as one of the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya for avid gardeners.

6. Strawberry Farms

It’s not just about tea in Nuwara Eliya – its cool climate is also perfect for strawberry cultivation.

Several farms around town offer the delightful experience of picking your own strawberries, which is a wonderfully fun activity for all ages.

Don’t forget to try some of the delicious strawberry-based treats like fresh strawberry ice cream or jam, which are often available to buy too.

7. Lover’s Leap Waterfall

This picturesque waterfall is not only known for its natural beauty but also for the romantic legend associated with it.

According to local folklore, a young couple, unable to be together due to societal pressures, leapt from the top of the waterfall. Hence the waterfall’s unique name.

Lover's Leap Waterfall

The hike to Lover’s Leap is relatively easy and rewards you with beautiful views of the waterfall cascading down the rocks.

8. Seetha Amman Temple

Another of the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya is to stop by Seetha Amman Temple.

Steeped in legend, this colourful Hindu temple is said to mark the spot where Sita was held captive by Ravana.

Seetha Amman Temple

The temple is a place of worship and a fascinating cultural site, and is a testament to the deep-rooted spiritual heritage of the area.

9. Moon Plains

This vast expanse of land offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Nuwara Eliya, with sights of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Known locally as ‘Sandatenna,’ Moon Plains is a relatively new attraction that features a mini World’s End of its own.

The drive or walk to the viewing platform is all part of the fun, offering encounters with wildlife such as elk, wild buffalo, and a variety of birds.

10. Post Office

A visit to Nuwara Eliya’s post office offers a glimpse into colonial-era architecture.

This iconic red-brick building, functioning since the 19th century, stands as a testament to the town’s historical charm.

Nuwara Eliya Post Office

It’s not only a place to send a postcard home but also a photogenic spot. I think it perfectly captures the essence of Nuwara Eliya’s blend of British influence and Sri Lankan culture.

Where to stay in Nuwara Eliya

We stayed in the gorgeous Goatfell , a boutique hotel with only four rooms. It’s part of the excellent Teardrop Hotels group.

Drone Shot of Goatfell

Perched high on a hill and surrounded by tea plantations, it offers the most epic views and an incredible setting. I mean just look at that sunrise in the photo above!

I’d whole-heartedly recommend a stay at Goatfell – you can read my full review here .

How to spend 2 days in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka – the best things to see and do

nuwara eliya trip photos

This post may contain affiliate links. I receive a small commission if you use these links, with no extra cost to you.

Nuwara Eliya sits in the hill country of southern central Sri Lanka, close to the popular backpacker town of Ella , and is surrounded by tea plantations, which flourish here due to the mild, rainy weather. The weather and landscape, as well as the colonial style buildings, are the reason that Nuwara Eliya is often referred to as ‘Little England’.

So what is there to do in Nuwara Eliya and is it worth visiting? Well that depends on what you like doing. If you enjoy hiking, being outdoors and experiencing a more ‘local’ town then Nuwara Eliya is worth adding to your Sri Lanka itinerary. However, if you prefer more of a tourist town and sandy beaches, then head to the South Coast and to Mirissa instead.

Itinerary overview:

Day 1 – Wander around Nuwara Eliya town and visit St Clair’s Falls 1. Relax in Victoria Park 2. Visit the Nuwara Eliya Post office 3. Enjoy high tea at the Grand Hotel 4. Visit St Clair’s falls

Day 2 – Visit Horton Plains National Park and a Tea Estate 1. Hike to the World’s End at Horton Plains National Park 2. Visit a Tea Estate 3. Walk to the Lover’s Leap Waterfall

How to get to Nuwara Eliya How long do you need in Nuwara Eliya? What should I pack for Nuwara Eliya?

Small hilltop villages in Nuwara Eliya's surrounding countryside

Day 1 – Wander around Nuwara Eliya town and visit St Clair’s Falls

On your first day, spend a couple of hours wandering around the main town of Nuwara Eliya. You don’t need a lot of time to explore the main town, as it isn’t that big, so combine it with a trip to St Clair’s falls.

1. Relax in Victoria Park

The park is named in honour of Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee coronation in 1897 and covers 27 acres of land in the centre of town. The park has several gardens, full of foreign flowers and birds and is nice for a little stroll away from the hustle of the main town. At the town entrance of the park, the Victoria Restaurant serves great local and western food for breakfast and lunch.

2. Visit the Nuwara Eliya Post office

The Post office building in the main town is one of the oldest in the country. Built in 1894, the Tudor Manor is open for visitors – it is very small and there’s not lots to see, but it’s right at the end of the main street, so you can pop in as you pass by.

3. Enjoy high tea at the Grand Hotel

After some research, one of the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya is to have afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel . We didn’t actually do this as we were on a budget. But if you love tea and cake and have a little extra money to spend, this would be a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

4. Visit St Clair’s falls

After you’ve spent some time wandering around the town of Nuwara Eliya, jump in a taxi and head to St. Clair’s falls. St Clair’s falls are known as the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. They are located about 50 minutes driver outside of Nuwara Eliya and can be seen from the viewpoint off the main road. Depending on how you arrive, you might pass St Clair’s Falls on the way in. We hired a driver to take us from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, so he stopped at St Clair’s falls on the way.

St. Clairs falls, in the hill country of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

Day 2 – Visit Horton Plains National Park and a Tea Estate

Get ready for a busy day! If you are spending longer than 2 days in Nuwara Eliya, then I would suggest separating these activities out into two days. But as you need to get up early to visit Horton Plains then you can easily combine both activities into one day if you’re short on time.

1. Hike to the World’s End at Horton Plains National Park

Hiking at Horton Plains National Park is one of the best things to do whilst you’re in Nuwara Eliya. Plus, you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this easy route!

We arranged to be picked up at 6am by our driver and headed to Horton Plains National Park. The park is a 1 hour 10 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya. There are several hiking routes, but the most popular trail is ‘World’s end’. This hiking route was given it’s name due to the huge drop off from an impressive cliff edge at the end of Horton Plains plateau.

Due to the height above sea level, the climate, and the diverse ecosystem in the national park, the view from World’s end becomes shrouded in thick cloud after about 9am (hence the early morning start!). We spent quite a bit of time at the World’s end viewpoint. However, once the clouds come in, you really can’t see the view across the valley at all. So, it really is worth getting up early and heading straight to the drop off point as soon as you arrive at the park. As you can see, the view is stunning!

The World’s end viewpoint in Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka

When you’re at the World’s end viewpoint, please be careful. There are no barriers at all and it is so easy to simply step or stumble off the edge. Numerous people advised us to be careful and maintain distance after several tourists had accidentally fallen whilst trying to get a photo.

After we had spent some time at World’s end, we then explored some of the other hiking routes in the park. The hiking here is relatively easy and you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to walk here. All routes are also well sign-posted so you shouldn’t get lost!

Once we had finished our walk at Horton Plains, we grabbed some lunch back in the main town, before meeting up with our driver for an afternoon of exploring the surrounding countryside and visiting a tea estate.

Hiking in Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka

2. Visit a Tea Estate

You can’t visit Nuwara Eliya without visiting a Tea Estate! Tea is what this area of Sri Lanka is known for and there are so many tea estates and plantations in the area for you to choose from.

The Pedro tea estate is only a short drive or tuk tuk ride from town and is one of the quieter tea plantations. As you drive up to the estate, you can see the tea pickers at work in the fields, placing the leaves into huge bags strapped onto their backs. Once you arrive at the estate, you can have a guided tour around the factory, learning about the full process of making tea and the differences between the variations of tea. I found the tour really quite interesting, made even better by the complimentary cup of Pedro estate Ceylon tea, enjoyed in the cafe at the end of the tour.

Enjoying Ceylon tea at Pedro Tea Estate, Nuwara Eliya

3. Walk to the Lover’s Leap Waterfall

Opposite the Pedro tea estate is Lover’s Leap waterfall. To start the walk, take the only road opposite the tea estate and follow a small sign post. The walk will take you through more tea plantations and rural countryside. The walk took us about 40 minutes and wasn’t too strenuous. Unfortunately for us, it had started to rain before we set off, but in true British style, we put on our raincoats and carried on anyway. However by the time we reached the base of the falls, we were soaked! It is a pretty waterfall and the walk to it was nice with great views. This combined with the proximity to the main town makes it one of the top things to do in Nuwara Eliya.

nuwara eliya trip photos

That was my 2 day itinerary for what we got up to in Nuwara Eliya. As I mentioned previously, I wasn’t thrilled with the town itself, but I would really recommend getting out into the countryside surrounding the town. There are so many waterfalls nestled in the tea plantations and rolling hills, the landscape is really beautiful.

If you are a keen hiker, many people use Nuwara Eliya as a base for hiking Adams Peak (or Sri Padra) – a mountain over 7000 feet above sea level with a pilgrimage site at the top. Adam’s Peak is a 2 hour 15 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya and it is advised to start the hike early, so just bare that in mind if you are taking on this strenuous challenge. If you are looking for more of an easy – moderate hike, then I would really recommend Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock in the beautiful town of Ella .

How to get to Nuwara Eliya

Depending on where you are travelling from, there are several options for getting to Nuwara Eliya. Chances are you will arrive in Nuwara Eliya from either Kandy or Colombo, which are both well connected for public transport.

By bus – If you’re on a tight budget, this will be your lowest cost option, however we spoke to another couple in our guest house who opted for the bus and hated it! They were stood up on a cramped bus for over 7 hours with almost no toilet stops and said they wished they had spent a little more for the train or taxi.

By train – The Kandy to Ella or Colombo to Ella train route is known as the most beautiful train ride in Sri Lanka and this route will stop at Nuwara Eliya. There is not a train station in Nuwara Eliya, but you can catch it from the nearby town of Nanu Oya, just 20 minutes drive away. I’ve written a separate post about my experience on Sri Lanka’s ‘best train journey’ here .

By taxi – I’ve mentioned in a couple of my other Sri Lanka blogs that taxis are a really common way of getting around Sri Lanka. Many companies offer private drivers which you can hire for the whole of your trip, for a pre-agreed fee. This is a great way of getting from place to place, and they can also take you to and from local attractions. We hired a taxi driver to drive us from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya and then we arranged with him to drive us to Horton Plains, Pedro tea estate and the Lover’s Leap waterfall on our second day here.

How long do you need in Nuwara Eliya?

I spent two days in Nuwara Eliya, which in my opinion, is plenty. It is often known as ‘Little England’, which in my opinion, can be a little misleading. I had pictured a quiet, scenic town, like some of the cute towns I’m used to in the UK , however in reality the main town area is dusty and industrial and the places to eat or grab a coffee did not feel particularly inviting.

If I’m honest, I didn’t really like the main town and was quite disappointed (maybe that’s due to my preconceptions), BUT once you journey out into the countryside around Nuwara Eliya, you realise the charm that this area has.

If you enjoy hiking and are planning to use Nuwara Eliya as a base to explore the hill country, then 2-4 days will be plenty of time.

What should I pack for Nuwara Eliya?

Nuwara Eliya does have a much cooler (and wetter!) climate that other parts of Sri Lanka, which is why this area is so great for growing tea! Make sure that you pack a lightweight rain jacket and some thin layers to keep you warm, particularly if you are hiking early in the morning as it is cool.

Last Updated on February 27, 2024 by Natalia

Located high in Sri Lanka’s hill country, the city of Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by beautiful nature and countless   tea plantations. The city, fondly referred to as Little England, has become an increasingly popular place to visit in recent years. This is partly thanks to the numerous waterfalls found in the area, as well as the proximity to the impressive Horton Plains National Park . Having visited as part of our trip to Sri Lanka, the Nuwara Eliya district was one our favourite spots in the country. There are some beautiful hotels in this area of Sri Lanka, so   click here to read our article on the best places to stay in Nuwara Eliya .  Otherwise, find out everything you need to know before you visit with this complete travel guide to Nuwara Eliya and these   tips for travelling Sri Lanka .

Make sure you’ve got everything you need for your trip to Nuwara Eliya with this guide of what to pack for Sri Lanka.

Table of Contents

How to get to Nuwara Eliya

Train – As part of our travel guide to Nuwara Eliya we recommend taking the train above all transport options as this town lies on the route between Kandy and Ella. This route is considered to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

You’ll have breath-taking views of Sri Lanka’s hill country and the tickets are extremely cheap – with prices starting at 60 rupees from Ella and 80 rupees from Kandy.

The closest station to Nuwara Eliya is Nanu Oya. Once you arrive here you’ll be able to get a tuk tuk or taxi to your accommodation. When we arrived we were offered a lift for just 100 rupees each from someone who was on their way back to Nuwara Eliya in a minivan.

From Kandy the journey to Nanu Oya takes around 4 hours, whereas it’s just 2 and a half hours from Ella. Find out more about train journeys and other ways of getting around with our guide to public transport in Sri Lanka .

Travelling across train to Nuwara Eliya does book up quickly so we recommend booking in advance with 12Go Asia by clicking here!

Bus – Although we’d fully recommend the train ride, it’s also possible to get there by bus. Buses run from Colombo, Ella and Kandy to Nuwara Eliya multiple times a day. Travel times will vary depending on the weather and traffic but generally it takes around 6 hours from Colombo and 2 and a half hours from Ella and Kandy.

We recommend taking the train to Nuwara Eilya in this guide!

Getting around Nuwara Eliya

A travel guide to Nuwara Eliya wouldn’t be complete without explaining how to get around! Mopeds and motorbikes are available to rent for the day to explore the area and are cheapest way to get around. However we wouldn’t recommend it unless you already have experience of driving these as the roads can be a little steep.

Tuk tuks are the best way to get around Nuwara Eliya and the surrounding area. Once you find a driver you’ll be able to negotiate a price depending on what you want to visit.

We rented a tuk tuk for the day to take us to Ramboda falls, lovers leap and Labookellie tea plantation/factory, which cost 3500 rupees in total. Prices will vary but be prepared to negotiate and never settle for the first price quoted to you!

Best time to visit Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya has consistent rainfall throughout the year. While this makes it a great area for tea plantations, it unfortunately means you’re likely to experience rain whenever you visit.

The best months to visit Nuwara Eliya are February and March as this is the time of year with the least rainy weather. If possible, avoid visiting from October-December, as these are the rainiest months.

One month to avoid is April, as it can get very busy. Sri Lankans celebrate New Year during April, so prices increase in the area at this time.

Best things to do in Nuwara Eliya

Horton Plains National Park – One of the top places to visit when in Nuwara Eliya is the Horton Plains National Park. The main attraction of the park is the World’s End viewpoint –a cliff with a sheer drop of 880 metres overlooking villages and tea plantations all the way to Sri Lanka’s coast. You’ll want to arrive at the cliff early though, as from around 9am mist obscures the view.

The walk to the viewpoint from the park entrance takes around an hour and is part of a 9 kilometre circular track. Throughout the walk you’ll pass beautiful scenery and nature, with Sambar deer commonly spotted in the park.

Continuing on from World’s End you’ll also pass the pleasant Baker falls, which makes for a nice spot to give your feet a rest.

Entrance to the park costs around 3000 rupees (depending on your group size), but you’ll also need to pay for transport both ways. Unfortunately no public transport runs to Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya, so your main option is to pay a driver to take you.

A tuk tuk should cost around 3500 rupees, whereas a car will be around 4000 rupees. Your accommodation will be able to assist you in booking this if necessary.

Lovers leap – Our travel guide recommends this beautiful waterfall to visit from Nuwara Eliya city, and sits high in the hills overlooking the surrounding area. The easiest way to reach Lovers leap is to hire a tuk tuk and to walk the final section.

A tuk tuk one way from the city should cost around 200 rupees. Alternatively you can walk from the city, however this can take around 1 and a half hours.

Lover's Leap waterfall - Nuwara Eliya Guide

Gregory Lake – A pleasant place to relax outside of the city. It’s possible to take part in various activities around the lake such as paddle boating, jet skiing and horse riding. Although entrance costs just 200 rupees, we’d recommend prioritising other spots unless you have spare time.

Victoria Park – A private park with an abundance of colourful flowers. In particular the park is nice to visit from March-May and August-September as the flowers are in bloom. Entrance does cost 300 rupees, but it’s not much to pay for an enjoyable stroll around the bright gardens.

Ramboda falls – Although it’s further from the city than Lovers leap, Ramboda falls is still well worth a visit and our favourite place on this travel guide to Nuwara Eliya. It’s a 20-minute steep walk to the waterfall, but this means it’s a lovely, secluded spot. Entrance is 50 rupees per person.

On the way to Ramboda falls, there’s another waterfall that can be seen from the road. Although this isn’t possible to visit up close, you’re able to stop and take in the view!

Tea plantations – Nuwara Eliya has a number of tea plantations; meaning large areas of countryside are covered with vast stretches of lush green tea plants. This alone is a beautiful thing to see and well worth getting out of the city to enjoy!

For those wishing to see more, many tea factories offer tours so you can see how the tea is produced. Our tuk tuk driver recommended Mackwoods Labookellie as the best tea factory to visit. The tour was free and you also get a free cup of tea to enjoy at the end which is a nice bonus! If you do visit, we recommend sitting in the café’s outside section to enjoy views of the nearby plantations.

Where to eat in Nuwara Eliya

De Silva Food Centre – If you’re looking for food on a budget then head to the De Silva Food Centre. You’ll find a range of Sri Lankan and Chinese food available at very reasonable prices.

Milano Restaurant – Another budget option is Milano restaurant, which serves a mix of Sri Lankan, Chinese and Western meals. The service was quite slow during our visit but the food was good value for the price.

Grand Indian – Although this Indian restaurant is one of the most popular places to eat in Nuwara Eliya town, the prices are higher than most alternatives. Despite the cost, the food is of a high standard – so if you’re willing to splash out for a good meal then this is the place for you!

Grand Thai – Another of Nuwara Eliya’s most popular restaurants, serving a variety of tasty Thai dishes. It’s worth arriving early if you don’t want to wait for a seat at meal times!

There were stone stairs from the temple houses to enter the main hall and other structures. Following touring the Temple, The tip with a radio tower is visible nearly all the way. The trees have adjusted to the cold weather, heavy downpours and intense sunshine. Walking in the morning tide is ideal for bird spectators. 5. Aberdeen Waterfalls

Aberdeen Waterfalls

The Aberdeen Waterfall remains one of the most iconic waterfalls in the Nuwara Eliya district! Reaching the cascade involves a reasonably challenging hike that will take you down a winding pathway composed of narrow staircases and paths laid in concrete. The walk will take you through lush undergrowth, usually darkened by the thick canopy – the hike is so scenic that many would find it very therapeutic. During the journey, one could listen to the sweet melodies of songbirds and the slow buzzing sound of the insects and witness such creatures. There are unique plants, and you will also walk past several creeks, large boulders, and vines. At the End of the trail lies the waterfall –magnificent, epic, and stunning; all the elaborate words fail to describe its beauty – It is a site that must be visited to understand and appreciate its splendour!

Explorers and adventurers can walk to the bottom of the waterfall where there is a pool, but bear in mind that it is relatively deep, and the water will be cold, so swimming is not recommended. But instead, you could rent a kayak and paddle below the cascade. The mist from the waterfall will undoubtedly soak up your clothes, so make sure you are clad in proper swimwear. The return journey will also be scary since you must climb your way up, which you quickly get down! You can find more information about the site from our reception, and excursions to the site or transportation can also be arranged by contacting our resort’s front desk. More Details

15 best things to do in nuwara eliya (sri lanka).

Bradley Williams

When working out what to do in Sri Lanka , make sure you spend at least 2 or 3 days in Nuwara Eliya.

It is one of the most unique and spectacular areas of the country. Nestled high away in the mountains, it’s almost like an entirely different world.

Filled with an abundance of gorgeous green tea plantations and they have more than their fair share of rain as well ... It’s no wonder they call it Little England!

To help make your stay as enjoyable as possible, here is our go-to list of the 15 best things to do in Nuwara Eliya at any time of the year.

But first up ...

How To Get To Nuwara Eliya

Getting to Nuwara Eliya is pretty straightforward, as it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka.

You have a number of different options.

One being to rent a tuk tuk and drive there yourself .

Another being to catch a bus in, which you can do so from most other major towns nearby.

Alternatively, and probably your best choice, is to get the train!

This part of Sri Lanka is famous for being incredibly beautiful.

Trains between Kandy , Nuwara Eliya and Ella offer some of the most spectacular views you’ll get anywhere in the country.

So don't worry, you certainly won't miss out by taking the train.

Remember that the most famous train route from Kandy to Ella (which goes through Nuwara Eliya books out quick, so you can book your tickets ahead of time right here ).

For all your train travel needs in general for Sri Lanka, use 12Go Asia to search and book the best deals and guarantee a seat!

There are a number of tour operators who operate from different points around the country.

So, if you're just interested in a short trip in and around Nuwara Eliya, then that’s also an option. Here are two tours being offered by GetYourGuide that might work for you:

Full Day Tour From Kandy to Nuwara Eliya
2 Day Tour from Colombo (includes Kandy and Nuwara Eliya)

For transfers around Sri Lanka, we always recommend using 12GoAsia .

Getting Around Nuwara Eliya

As for getting to and from each of these incredible places to visit, you have a few choices.

  • ‍ Hire a tuk tuk - To be completely honest, I’m not 100% sure whether or not you can hire tuk tuks to drive in Nuwara Eliya. However, if you’re still in Colombo carrying out some last minute trip planning , then I would recommend considering this option. We hired a tuk tuk for 4 weeks to go round the entire island .‍
  • Rent a moped - We love mopeds. They are by far the most enjoyable way to get around anywhere in Asia. Just be careful when it’s been raining as the roads might be a bit treacherous. Also, be sure to check out this checklist guide I wrote for hiring a moped .‍
  • Get yourself a driver for the day - If you don't fancy driving yourself about then, by all means, hire a driver. There are tuk tuk drivers all around town and many will be more than willing to be your personal chauffeur for the day. Between 2 or 3 people, this would work out surprisingly cheap.‍
  • Taxi it - If you're a budget backpacker then this method will probably work out a bit expensive. However, if expense isn't a problem, then a nice air-conditioned car is the probably the most comfortable way to get around.‍
  • Use a bicycle - This one really depends on how much you love cycling! Some of the things to do in Nuwara Eliya are a little far out of town. As such, cycling up and down the mountains might be a little too exhausting! However, you can definitely use a bike to get to all of the things closest to the centre of town.

Where to stay in Nuwara Eliya

During our time in Nuwara Eliya we stayed at the incredible Villa Mount Royal.

We absolutely loved it, as it's located just outside of the busy part of town, with gorgeous tea plantations all around!

Our 15 Favourite Things To Do In Nuwara Eliya

1. hire a swan on gregory lake.

gregory lake nuwara elyia

Right in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, you have Gregory Lake. It’s a large open body of water that is easily visible from points all across Nuwara Eliya.

Many people visiting the area will then choose to go jet skiing on Gregory lake.

Or, if you want something a little more chilled out and romantic, then hire a swan out for an hour.

You can also park up and walk around whole sections of the lake, which is something we got to do whilst there.

Or, if you’d simply like to gaze at it from your room, consider staying at one of these hotels in Nuwara Eliya near Gregory Lake .

2. Amble Through Victoria Park

victoria park

The heart of Nuwara Eliya can seem a little busy, and there’s certainly a decent amount of noise going on from all the traffic.

Well, Victoria Park is sort of like a haven away from that surrounding noise and busyness.

The Victoria Park entrance fee is only 300 Rupees , and you can spend as long as you want strolling around the gardens or relaxing on a park bench.

You also have the Victoria Park museum there as well.

It's only small, but showcases lots of old Nuwara Eliya photos from the last 100 years or so. They show you what life was like in the area, back when it was under British influence.

It’s fascinating to see how the area has evolved and what construction was like when the railways were built.

Price: 300 LKR/Person
Book: Pay when you visit
Opening Times: 7 am to 7 pm

3. Daydream At Lover’s Leap Waterfall

lovers leap waterfall

Lover’s Leap waterfall in Nuwara Eliya is definitely something you can't afford to miss.

It’s a very short drive from the centre of town and is one of the nicest waterfalls in the entire country.

It also has a rather fascinating history, at least if you believe the local folklore.

As the story goes, a local prince once fell in love with a girl, but the two were forbidden to be together.

The whole saga ends with them jumping to their deaths from the waterfall, hand in hand.

How true this is, or whether there have been any cases since, is yet unclear to me.

But either way, it’s a nice spot to visit.

4. Marvel At Devon Falls

devon falls nuwara elyia

About a 20 to 30 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya, you have two breathtaking falls that it would be a shame to miss.

They are both very close to one another, but Devon falls is slightly further away.

There are a few spots where it’s nice to stop and see them.

However, I recommend doing what we did, which was to visit the Mlesna Tea Castle .

Yes, you read that right, somebody built a tea room in the shape of an actual castle!

You can sit upstairs on the balcony and gaze out over the farm whilst enjoying a nice warm cup of tea.

Or a cold cup of iced tea, if that’s your thing. Don’t forget the cake ...

5. Enjoy Lunch At St Clair’s Falls

st clairs falls in nuwara elyia

I recommend enjoying the beauty of St Clair’s Falls from The Waterfall Villas by Yoho .

This resort has a wonderful restaurant situated in a prime spot on the mountainside.

They have large glass windows running all the way along, allowing you to sit and eat your meal with a view.

The food is also incredibly cheap!

The drive to both of these falls takes you through the winding mountain roads, and offers incredible views out over the local tea plantations.

So it’s worth visiting Devon Falls and St Clair’s Falls for this reason alone.

6. Play A Round Of Golf

golf in nuwara elyia

If like me you’re a massive fan of golf, why not head out for a round while you’ve got the chance?

The imaginatively-named Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is situated right in the heart of Nuwara Eliya and is surprisingly cheap for a round.

You can play and rent out everything you need for around 8400 rupees in total.

That even includes a caddy to go around with you.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to play as the weather was incredibly rainy after our first day there.

However, it really would be a special place to play.

The course dates all the way back to 1889 and is one of the oldest golf courses anywhere in Asia.

It is also one of the very few golf courses you’ll find during your travels in Sri Lanka.

7. Explore The Seetha Amman Temple

Seetha Amman Temple

One of the more uncommon places to visit in Nuwara Eliya is the Seetha Amman temple.

It’s quite a special place as it’s the only Sita temple in Sri Lanka.

It is also quite a sacred spot.

And if you're interested in discovering more about the history of the area in which the temple is built, I recommend checking out this article here.

You will likely pass the Seetha Amman temple on your way out of Nuwara Eliya towards Ella.

So there really are no excuses not to stop off!

Price: Free!
Opening Times: 8am to 1pm & 2pm to 6.30pm

8. Take In The Hakgala Botanical Gardens

nuwara eliya trip photos

Just 1km away from the Seetha Amman temple, you have the Hakgala Botanical Gardens .

This is the second biggest botanical garden anywhere in Sri Lanka and is one of only 4 others.

Due to the comparatively low annual temperature of this region of the country, those who manage the garden have been able to grow some incredibly rare species of plants.

Many of which you’ll struggle to find anywhere else in the country.

It is by far one of the most popular things to see in Nuwara Eliya as the park draws in up to 100,000 guests a year.

All to see more than 10,000 species of flora.

Price: 1500 LKR/Person
Book: Buy tickets when you arrive
Opening Times: 7.30 am to 5 pm

9. Chill Out At A Tea Factory

tea factories in sri lanka

It is hard to recommend any particular tea factory, as it would take weeks for me to explore all of them!

In fact, the entire route up from Kandy to Ella is littered with spectacular tea plantations.

Most of which have an accompanying factory and tea rooms for visitors.

My advice would be to simply head out for the day exploring the other wonderful things to see and do in and around Nuwara Eliya.

At some point, you’ll feel a bit tired and decide it’s time for a rest.

This is exactly what we did and were not disappointed with any of the places we decided to stop off at.

If you’re wondering what to do in Nuwara Eliya when it rains, then I suggest you head to a tea factory and fill up on delicious cakes and tea!

10. Take A Walk Through Moon Plains

Moonplains in sri lanka

When you visit and experience the astonishing beauty of Moon Plains, you’ll be horrified to discover this area was once the site of a vast garbage heap.

Waste from Nuwara Eliya was deposited here for years, before being finally cleared in 2010.

Now, the area attracts thousands of visitors every single year.

Many choose to either hike, cycle or drive through the park.

The top thing to do in Moon Plains would be to climb Mini World's End .

It offers panoramic views of the area, as long as it’s not a foggy day of course!

You also have the chance to spot a wild array of wildlife.

The area is home to everything through from wild elk to leopards.

The latter of which are a lot rarer.

11. Hike Up Adam’s Peak

adams peak sri lanka

If Mini World’s End doesn't get your blood pumping, maybe it’s time to head on out to Adam’s Peak.

Full disclaimer here … we didn't actually get to climb this ourselves!

We were pretty gutted to discover that it’s not very safe to climb it in October due to the heavy rainfall, large amounts of mist and lack of lighting.

In fact, you’ll find very few people climbing it during the off season.

Instead, thousands flock there to climb up in time for sunrise during the busy months.

As we haven't been, I recommend checking out this guide on climbing Adam’s Peak and what you need to do to prepare.

12. Stroll Through The Tea Plantations

tea plantations in nuwara elyia

Most of the tea plantations in the area seem to be pretty much open access.

Because there are so many hundreds of thousands of trees, you don't have to worry about finding areas fenced off with barbed wire.

Instead, you could simply stop off and head out for a nice peaceful walk among the plantations.

On your way, you’ll come across lots of women out working the fields.

Many of whom will likely offer to pose for you in exchange for a hundred or so rupees.

Which is a big deal for them as they are paid a surprisingly low wage for such arduous work (at least by Western standards of pay).

13. Explore The Breathtaking Horton Plains National Park

hortons national park sri lanka

One of the most famous Nuwara Eliya points of interest is Horton’s Plains.

This vast open park is actually around 30 km from Nuwara Eliya, but is still one of the most visited spots as this is the closest major city.

There isn't one simple route you can take upon entering the park.

Instead, the area includes 3 major rivers and numerous peaks you can choose to hike up.

The most famous being World’s End.

It’s also very popular for nature enthusiasts as you have the chance to spot and photograph a whole array of local wildlife.

If you need some inspiration for a route, then this is a good place to start .

Price: $15/Person
Book: Check Viator
Opening Times: 6am–6pm

14. Discover Bomburu Ella Waterfall

Bomburu Ella Waterfall

What makes Bomburu Ella waterfall so significant is that it’s the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka. And is in fact made up of multiple smaller waterfalls.

As an added bonus, getting to Bomburu Ella waterfall is pretty easy as it’s so close to Nuwara Eliya.

Many choose to visit either before or after Moon Plains, as they are each in the same direction.

This is the 4th and final waterfall that I will recommend on this list.

But don't worry, there are plenty more to enjoy.

All unique and spectacular in their own rite!

To find even more, check out this post on the best Nuwara Eliya waterfalls .

15. Rent A Bicycle For The Day

bicycle ride in nuwara elyia

With so many interesting places to visit in Nuwara Eliya, why not just hire a bicycle for the day and get lost?

You could spend a whole day alone exploring the old British architecture seen in buildings in town. Such as the Old Post Office which is one of the top Nuwara Eliya attractions.

The Nuwara Eliya strawberry farm is also another place you could discover via bike, but it’s seasonal, which is why we didn’t get to visit.

Bradley was disappointed, he absolutely LOVES strawberries!

If you’ve been to Nuwara Eliya before and have anything else to add, then I’d love to hear from you below! Just add in a comment with any more beautiful things to do in Nuwara Eliya that you think I’ve missed out.

When is the best time to visit Nuwara Eliya?

Since this area of Sri Lanka is regarded as "Little England" due to the colder climates and the higher chance of rain, it's seasons can be a little different to the rest of the country.

February to May is considered the best time to visit Nuwara Eliya; it's colder at this time, but there is less rain fall.

However, Bradley and I visited in September and I personally thought it was good. Some sights were closed, and we did experience some rain, but this also meant the waterfalls were very powerful, and Nuwara Eliya is home to the best waterfalls in Sri Lanka.

Where to after Nuwara Eliya?

After Nuwara Eliya, you’re in a great position to either visit Kandy or Ella.

There are lots of great places to visit in Kandy and Ella, and it’s really easy to get to and from via the train network, or your own tuk-tuk of course!

The History Of Nuwara Eliya

girl sat on top of a waterfall, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya was a hill country retreat for British civil servants and tea planters, and they bought with them many English past times such as fox and deer hunting, polo, golf and cricket.

Even the houses reflect the history of British colonialists, making the town feel as though it has been taken right out of an English countryside village!

As well as its interesting architecture, Nuwara Eliya has a whole host of interesting and fun things to do, as well as being a firm favourite for those who want to relax. We have listed them for you below so that you can get the most from your visit.

The Most Beautiful Things To Do In Nuwara Eliya

You don’t have to search far for beauty in Nuwara Eliya. Just head out into the countryside and take in the surroundings. But if you want some inspiration then we’ve got it for you, by the bucket load!

Read on to find out our suggestions for the best things to do in and around Nuwara Eliya.

1. Relax In Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya

a girl sitting on a bench in victoria park in nuwara eliya

If you’re anything like us, you’ll arrive in Nuwara Eliya a little hot and sweaty after a day of travel. The perfect remedy to relieve the stresses of the day is to take a visit to Victoria Park.

Right in the middle of Nuwara Eliya, it’s surprising how quiet and tranquil this park is. And how big! We grabbed a little picnic and spent the afternoon wandering the extensive grounds and lounging around on the perfectly manicured grounds.

Don’t miss the lovely fountains and awesome trees. Around every corner there’s another little unexpected gem, so make sure you give it a little time. Around sunset, it’s where the locals come to hang out, so it gets a little busier then!

There is a small museum here too with old photos of Nuwara Eliya. It shows what life was like when it was under British influence

Entrance fee: 300 Rupees

Location:  PBC Hwy, Nuwara Eliya 22200, Sri Lanka

2. Drink Tea At Pedro Tea Estate

Drinking tea in pedro tea estate, Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is known to be the most important area for tea production in the whole of Sri Lanka. Its temperate weather makes it perfect for growing light, delicate tea and the area has many different tea plantations.

Pedro Tea Estate is a fascinating place for a visit, and the bonus cup of locally grown tea at the end of the tour makes it all the more special.

Entry Fees: 200(Rs)

Location:  About 3.5km east of Nuwara Eliya, on the way to Kandapola

✅ Book your trip to Pedro Tea Factory here

3. Ride A Swan Boat At Nuwara Eliya’s Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya

Gregory Lake was created by Governor William Gregory between 1872 and 1877. It was used for watersports during the British colonial period and is still going strong today. It is the perfect place to take a picnic and relax with the locals.

It would also be a great place to take kids, as it is perfectly set up for families with boats for hire (including swan boats and jet skis!) and horse riding available.

You may want to check the conditions the horses are kept in, it seemed to us they are free to roam in a field opposite the lake but you could double-check with the staff before paying for a ride.

There is a small snack shop next to the lake, but it would be best to bring your own drinks and snacks from a supermarket in town. If you are here later in the evening, there is a pizza takeaway shop just opposite the lake that serves delicious pizzas! You won’t regret ruining that diet-trust us!

Entry Fees: Free (differing charges for boat hire)

Location:  A short walk from the main centre of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

4. Drink Afternoon Tea At The Luxurious Grand Hotel

A COCKTAIL AND A CAMERA

Built in 1891 for the governor of Sri Lanka, Sir Edward Barnes, The Grand Hotel is the perfect place to indulge and is a must on your list of places to visit in Nuwara Eliya.

Set in magnificent grounds, you can dine like royalty on the garden terrace or sip cocktails in the piano lounge. The interior of the hotel could easily be taken straight from a high-end London hotel. You can even stay the night here if you fancy something a little special!

We treated ourselves to a cocktail here in the afternoon. We drank on the garden terrace overlooking the beautifully manicured lawns and felt like we were in a film.

Then the rains started and we ran for cover inside the lounge area, where we were treated to a performance from a very talented pianist. A trip here really is a must-have, and it isn’t all that expensive either!

Location: No. 05 Grand Hotel Road Nuwara Eliya, Nuwaraeliya 22200, Sri Lanka

5. Take In The Views At Lovers Leap Waterfall

A COUPLE SAT ON TOP OF A WATERFALL IN NUWARA ELIYA

You can walk (scramble) to the top of the waterfall to experience the incredible views over Nuwara Eliya and beyond.

This waterfall comes with a romantic and tragic tale. Read all about it, and a more in-depth guide about how to get there and what to expect when you do, in this ultimate guide to Lovers Leap Waterfall .

6. Pay A Visit To Nuwara Eliya’s Post Office

THE OLD POST OFFICE IN NUWARA ELIYA

Nuwara Eliya Post Office is housed in an antique Tudor Manor house built in 1894. It’s one of the oldest post offices in the country, and one of the most ‘English’ buildings in Sri Lanka!

It was even featured on a stamp in 1990. It’s situated in the centre of town, so is definitely worth a little walk past. Or you could even hire a bicycle and include a visit here in a cycle tour of the town (see below!)

Location: Queen Elizabeth Dr, Nuwara Eliya 22200, Sri Lanka

7. Rent A Bicycle For The Day

One of our favourite things to do when visiting somewhere new, hire a bike and explore. Nuwara Eliya is the perfect place to do this in, with so many lovely views and such a peaceful feel out in the countryside.

You could easily pack a picnic and spend the day pottering around, exploring the quaint English-style houses and the lovely tea plantation countryside. You will find bike rental shops in town or some hostels offer them also.

If you do end up hiring a bike then try and take a little time to explore the surrounding countryside as well as the town itself. The tea fields are just beautiful here, and the cooler climates make cycling a really enjoyable activity.

8. Play A Round Of Golf In Nuwara Eliya

The  Nuwara Eliya Golf Club  is situated right in the heart of Nuwara Eliya. If you enjoy golf then you can play and rent out everything you need for around 8400 rupees in total. That even includes a caddy to go around with you.

If you’ve never played before then this may be the perfect place to give it a go, as the course dates all the way back to 1889 and is one of the oldest golf courses anywhere in Asia.

The tuk-tuks in Sri Lanka are used to travelling long distances, you’ll just have to be prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride! We travelled several 3-5 hour journeys by tuk-tuk and enjoyed every minute of it.

It’s cheaper than a taxi, and you get a nice breeze and great views as you go. Opt for a taxi if you’re happy to spend the money for a bit more luxury!

If you’re staying in the centre of Nuwara Eliya then there are lots of things within walking distance. For some of the things to do in Nuwara Eliya, you will need to hire some form of transport, but it’s usually pretty cheap and easy to find.

Hire a tuk tuk

They are everywhere and very reasonably priced. The tuk-tuk drivers are also used to tourists in Nuwara Eliya and will be able to help you out when it comes to finding good photography spots or hidden entrances.

Just take what they say with a pinch of salt when it comes to visiting places-our tuk tuk driver told us Lover’s Leap waterfall would be dry because he wanted to take us further and get more for his trip.

In fact, when we got there, there was more than enough water to make an impressive waterfall!

Rent a moped

If you are confident on two wheels then mopeds may be a good idea. Make sure you have a good helmet though, and be careful when the roads are wet!

Get yourself a driver for the day  – Hire a taxi for the day and visit where ever you want outside of town. Between a group of people this may turn out to be your cheapest option!

Use a bicycle

1. Hike to World Ends and Explore Horton Plains National Park

The hike to the world’s end is an incredible thing to do in Nuwara Eliya. It is certainly worth the early morning and entry prices.

Hiking to World’s End veiew point is very dependent on the clarity of the day you chose to hike. You need a really clear day to ensure you are greeted with the incredible views the world’s end has to offer. There are two view points, little World End and World’s End. We prefered the view at Little World End out of the two but both are just awe inspiring.

There is also Bakers falls in Horton Plains national park so take the time to visit this powerful waterfall.

2. Lovers Leap Waterfall

This waterfall was our favourite in Nuwara Eliya. It is a bit of a trek from the centre of Nuwara Eliya, but that adds to the adventure.

If you are staying in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, call a tuk-tuk to come and collect you to take you to Lovers Leap. The journey to this waterfall is so beautiful through incredible tea fields and past temples. It is just as good as the waterfall itself.

The Tuk Tuk drop-off point is a short walk from here to the waterfall itself. It is beautiful and easy to navigate the rocks to climb to the fantastic viewpoint.

Lovers Leap Waterfall, the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya.

3. Walk around Gregory Lake and Victoria Park

Gregory lake and Victoria park in Nuwara Eliya is so peaceful and serene to walk around. Although there are quite a few eateries and attractions on one side, the other side offers serenity and well-kept paths. Keep an eye out for kingfishers. If you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot a few flying above the water. Views from the Lake offer many insights to the time of the British rule. From here you can see many of the colonial buildings from this period.

You have to pay 300rs to enter victoria park. The entry price also incrludes entry to the Victoria Park museums which showcases what life used to be like in the city.

Water activites at Gregory Lake

You can enjoy some beautiufl boat rides around Gregory lake. With the option to hire a swan boat or a speed boat depending on what takes your fancy.

Ramboda Falls and Upper Ramboda Falls

4. lower ramboda falls.

Ramboda falls are the most well known in Nuwara Eliya. Lower Ramboda falls are so easily accessible from the roadside they are the most visited. The waterfall is beautiful, however there is certainly no swimming here due to the waterfalls sheer power!

It might be slightly gimicky but the Ramboda falls inn is a great place to stop for lunch and admire the waterfall from. The food is great with a buffet including many Sri Lankan dishes.

5. Upper Ramboda Falls

Heading to upper Ramboda falls is a much more authentic experience then lower Ramboda falls. They both offer completely different things and are both worth going to. Compared to lower Ramboda falls the waterfall is a little bit more of a hike. It take around 15-20 minutes and you have to pay for entry. You can Google Center Ramboda Falls to find the ticket counter.

6. Visit a Tea Factory and go tea tasting.

Of course, you can’t leave Nuwara Eliya without visiting some of the Lush Tea Plantations. Head to a Tea Factory for a tour and tasting. We also took the time to walk around the tea plantations.

Word of Caution here….

Some tea plantations really exploit their staff and don’t pay a fair wage. Wherever you choose to go in Nuwara Eliya, make sure it is a plantation that produces reasonable prices and cares for its employees.

Insider Tip: Wear shoes that completely cover your shoes as there are many leeches in the tea planations. If possible cover your legs too.

7. Hakgala Botanical Gardens

the Hakgala botanical gardens are the second biggest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. It is also known as the highest botanical in the world. Due to Nuwara Eliya’s cooler climate some very rare species of plants grow here. Here you will find a rose garden, a japenese garden and impressive collection of Orchids. These gardens really are beautiful.

The Legend of the Hakgala Botanical Gardens…

Like many places in Nuwara Eliya it is also steeped in a facinating history. According to legend, Hanuam, the monkey god, was sent to the Himalayas to find a herb. He brought back a peice of the Himalayas in his jaw and from here the gardens flourish. The gardens grow on a rock names Hakagala which when translated means ‘jaw-rock’.

Kandy .

You can get the famous blue train from Kandy city and get off at Nuwara Eliya. However, the best views on this train are from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. So you will want to do this part of the journey too.

From Ella, you can take the famous blue train to Nuwara Eliya. It takes around 3 hours and has the most beautiful views. Most people take the train from Kandy to Ella, this takes 6 hours. The Nuwara Eliya to Ella section of the train journey provides the best views. Meaning you are not missing out on anything by stopping in Nuwara Eliya.

8 Best Places to Visit in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

If you’re in the southern highlands of Sri Lanka, take time to visit waterfalls, tea plantations, national parks, peaks, and farms. These attractions are among the best places to visit in Nuwara Eliya. Read on for our favorite places in the Nuwara Eliya area! You’ll tour these beautiful places and finish with a cup of Sri Lankan tea!

Sri Lanka tea terraces and plantations

Ramboda Waterfall

Ramboda Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka. If you’re looking for something easy to get to and beautiful scenery, then you can’t go wrong with this one. The waterfall is situated on the River Kelani and is a mere 358 feet high, but it’s a great place to take a walk or hike. Located just one hour south of Nuwara Eliya, Ramboda Waterfall is an impressive sight. The two waterfalls are attached and are an absolute must-see.

Visitors can also hike to the bottom of the waterfall. While the main fall is accessible from the road, the lower fall is only accessible from a footpath or by hiking. If you prefer a more up-close view, you can opt to stay at Ramboda Falls Hotel . The hotel’s restaurant has a breathtaking view of the waterfall. It also has a trail that leads to the falls’ natural pools.

Ramboda Falls, Sri Lanka

Tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya

When you visit the tea plantations of Sri Lanka, you will see a beautiful and unique part of the country. The southern highlands are covered in rows of deep green tea bushes, speckled with color. The plantations are alive with activity, and the people plucking the leaves of each shrub work barefoot along the rows. Tea is processed in nearby factories and then shipped to market.

The lush greenery of the plantations has a calming effect. In fact, green is the most relaxing color in the spectrum, which is why you’ll find hospitals with a lot of green in the interior. It’s no wonder then that you’ll feel relaxed and refreshed when you visit the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya. The beautiful views from the plantations make for a memorable experience, and you can taste world-class teas as a souvenir.

The main conservation issues affecting plantations include the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and soil erosion. Increasing the use of organic farming practices, aforestation of native plant species, and the establishment of reserved forest areas can help improve biodiversity in the plantations. In the meantime, tea enthusiasts can try tea picking and enjoy a relaxing day at the plantations while learning about the history of tea cultivation in Sri Lanka.

Tea picking at Damro Tea Factory, Sri Lanka

Tea tour at Damro Tea Factory

A tea tour at the Damro Labookellie Tea Estate in Nuwara Eliya is one of the most authentic and rewarding ways to experience the culture of Sri Lanka’s finest tea. This beautiful tea estate is situated on 5000 acres of lush tea plantations. The Damro Tea Factory produces both black and white tea and processes green tea in a separate factory. Visitors can experience both tea manufacturing processes and learn about the tea-growing process in this stunning location. After the tour, you’ll be rewarded with a free cup of tea from the cafe.

If you’re looking for a great break from the busy traffic of the city or city tourism, consider taking a walk in the area. This place is popular with young couples and families. For another perspective of the tea plantations, a train ride from Kandy or Ella is a beautiful experience and a must-do when exploring this part of Sri Lanka. But be sure to avoid visiting Nuwara Eliya in the rainy season – the country receives torrential rain during this time.

Horton Plains National Park

Located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Horton Plains is an area of montane grassland and cloud forest at an altitude of around 2,100 meters. The area is rich in biodiversity, with many endemic species. Its proximity to Nuwara Eliya makes it a popular tourist destination. Visitors can reach the park by driving to Ohiya Gap and descending to Dondra Watch.

Horton Plains National Park is located an hour’s drive from Nuwara Eliya. The park is known for its picturesque cloud forests, cliffs, and montane grasslands. A walk in the park is a great way to explore this beautiful area. The park is a great spot to observe wildlife but be prepared for it to be a bit primitive. If you’re looking for an adventure, take a hike through the national park. World’s End is a spectacular escarpment and waterfall.

A deer in Horton Plains National Park, Sri Lanka

Baker’s Falls and World’s End hike

The renowned waterfall in Sri Lanka, Baker’s Falls, is the first place you visit on the 9-kilometer hike. The waterfall is located in Horton Plains National Park, on a tributary of the Belihul Oya. During the hike, you will be able to admire the natural beauty of this national park and the waterfall. The waterfall is accessible by foot or by bicycle, and the scenic route (appr. 3 kilometers from the parking lot) is suitable for all levels of fitness.

If you do not feel comfortable hiking alone or if you’re worried about hiking on uneven terrain, you can hire a guide. The cost of a guide varies depending on the guide’s skills and experience. World’s End is an incredible hike (3 more kilometers after Baker’s Falls), and the views from the top are amazing. Then you can continue to Mini World’s End for some more picturesque glimpses over the valley. There are some places to rest but bring enough water with you. The whole circle hike from the parking lot to Baker’s Falls to World’s End to Mini World’s End to the parking lot is about 9 kilometers.

The 7 best things do in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

Things to do in Nuwara Eliya

If you have Sri Lankan friends, ask them where you should visit in Sri Lanka. I bet at least half of them would start their suggestions with Nuwara Eliya.

Verdant tea plantations, picturesque waterfalls, amazing hikes, friendly people: there are so many things to like about Nuwara Eliya. However, the main reason why Sri Lankans love it so much is its cool climate.

If you are visiting Sri Lanka to escape from a cold winter, you might wonder if this is something for you. Trust me, you will find it very refreshing after travelling in Sri Lanka for several days enjoying the tropical weather.

The average temperature in Nuwara Eliya ranges from 20°C (68°F) in the daytime to 12°C (53.6°F) in the nighttime. If you are visiting Sri Lanka from the UK, it will probably feel like your summer days. In fact, Nuwara Eliya is often referred to as the little England.

The focus of today’s Travellers Isle article is to unveil the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya. The excursions that I discuss in this article are often used in our Sri Lanka holidays. If you follow these suggestions, I am sure you will have a great time in this beautiful destination.

Best things to do in Nuwara Eliya

There are many excursions that you can enjoy in Nuwara Eliya, however, these attractions always stand out to me. If you can spare to spend two full days in Nuwara Eliya, you will be able to enjoy most of these excursions.

1. Enjoy the tea plantations

Tea plantation visit

If you are a tea lover, there is a good chance that you have heard about our Ceylon tea. For those who like to find the origins of this amazing beverage, Nuwara Eliya is a must visit.

The soil quality and the climatic conditions of Nuwara Eliya are perfect for the tea plant, which has made it the largest tea growing region in Sri Lanka. The tea capital, Nuwara Eliya is filled with lush greenery of tea plantations.

If you are accompanied by a tour guide, he will be able to arrange a visit to a tea plantation while you are in Nuwara Eliya. If not, you may visit a tea plantation during a tea factory tour, which I am going to discuss next.

2. Visit a tea factory

Tea factory visit in Nuwara Eliya

It is so very easy to brew a cup of tea. You put your tea leaves into the boiling water and wait for the right colour. Throw in some sugar if you like it sweet, and you are all done. However, things are not so easy behind the scenes. Visit a tea factory while you are in Nuwara Eliya. It will give you a new appreciation for your cup of tea.

Most of the tea factories in Nuwara Eliya offer free guided tours for anyone who visits them. Upon request they will also escort you through their tea plantations.

At the end of the tour, you may enjoy a refreshing cup of tea right where the tea is produced. Most tourists buy some tea before they leave the tea factory, but is completely optional.

Pedro Tea factory is the closest tea factory to the town of Nuwara Eliya. Other tea factories that are great to visit are Blue Field, Damro, and Glenloch.

3. Enjoy a hike in the Horton Plains

Horton Plains

Horton Plains is no ordinary national park. It is a part of a UNESCO listed world heritage site. Most of the species that you find in Horton Plains cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. (The vertebrate fauna of the region includes 24 species of mammals, 87 species of birds, nine species of reptiles and eight species of amphibians.) It is also the headwaters of three major rivers in Sri Lanka, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe.

The Horton Plains hike is about 9.5 km long, but it is not a very physical one. If you are strolling through the National Park in a leisurely pace, it will take you about 3 hours. This 3-hour hike includes a visit to the World’s End viewpoint which offers a stunning view of the surrounding area.

In order to enjoy the true beauty of the Horton Plains, you need to visit it between 6.00 am and 10.00 am. After that the national park gets very misty. You can barely even see few meters ahead of you when it is covered in mist.

On a personal note, hiking Horton Plains is my favorite thing to do when I am in Nuwara Eliya. The views in this national park are absolutely brilliant.

4. Take a train ride to Ella

Scenic train ride to Ella

You might have already seen photographs of beautiful train rides in Sri Lanka. 99% of those photographs are taken during the Nanu Oya – Ella train journey. (Nanu Oya is the closest railway station to the town of Nuwara Eliya.)

The 4-hour train journey passing the tea plantations, beautiful mountains, low hung clouds, and tunnels is one of the essential experiences in Sri Lanka.

Technically speaking, you can visit Ella by train and return back to Nuwara Eliya on the same day. However, we usually schedule it as the last thing in Nuwara Eliya, so our guests can take the train journey and arrive in their next destination, Ella.

5. Visit the Lover’s Leap Waterfall

Lovers Leap waterfall

Lover’s Leap is a picturesque waterfall just a few kilometers away from the Nuwara Eliya town. There’s a legend surrounding this wonderful fall that gives it its name. The story goes as follows:

A Royal prince who went on hunting in the jungle met a village girl with captivating beauty. He immediately fell in love with this beautiful girl and wanted to marry her. However, his parents strongly objected this marriage.

The stern refusal of the king and the queen was devastating for the young couple. It eventually led to their unfortunate decision of taking their own lives.

The two leapt off the top of the waterfall hoping to be united beyond in death. That is how the waterfall got its name, Lover’s Leap.

If you are visiting this waterfall, you will have to either go there by foot or take a tuk tuk. The walk to the waterfall can take 1 to 2 hours from the last point that a car/van can access.

6. Take a jeep tour to the Moon Plains

Moon Plains Nuwara Eliya

Moon plains could be described as a miniature version of the famous Horton Plains. People visit to take in the beautiful scenery.

If you are pressed for time or having difficulties taking long walks, choose Moon Plains instead of Horton Plains. It only takes a fraction of the time needed for the Horton Plains and requires little to no effort.

If you are taking this excursion, you will have to hire a jeep from the entrance, which will take you to a viewpoint. The 15-minute drive on the bumpy road is a mildly inconvenient, but the beautiful landscape is compensation for it.

Once you get to the viewpoint you will be able to enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding plains, which is absolutely stunning.

The only small obstacle to the whole experience would be the 20-minute time cap that the authorities have put in place. In their defense, if the visitors are allowed to spend more than 20 minutes at the viewpoint, it would be too crowded to enjoy anything.

I recommend going there around 7.00 am. Similar to the World’s End viewpoint at Horton Plains national park, the view at the Moon Plains is best during the early hours of the day.

7. Visit the Seetha Amman Temple

Seeta Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya

A splash of colour amidst lush greenery, Sitha Amman Temple is an important Hindu temple, located in Nuwara Eliya.

According to the Indian epic Ramayana, goddess Seetha (who is the heroine of the epic) was held in captivity in this location by the evil king, Ravana.

A unique feature of this shrine is the presence of large footprint shaped depressions on the rock surface across the stream. They are believed to have belonged to Hanuman who helped Seetha’s husband Rama in rescuing her.

The temple is open from 8.00 am to 6.30 pm. You might be able to witness Tamil tea plantation workers doing rituals to pay their respect to the goddess Seetha during your visit to this colourful temple.

Nice to see things in Nuwara Eliya

There are excursions in Nuwara Eliya that are worth a mention, but not significant enough to be identified as a must-see. You may enjoy them, if you have some extra time left in Nuwara Eliya. A list of those excursions is as follows.

1. Nuwara Eliya Golf Course

If you like playing golf, visit the Nuwara Eliya Golf course. It is a centuries old golf club established by the British planters for their recreation. Even if you are not a golf player, you may still visit it to have a meal and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

2. Hakgala Botanical Garden

This is a small botanical garden close to the Seeta Amman temple. If you are not visiting Kandy during your Sri Lanka holiday, give it a go. If your itinerary does include a stay in Kandy, and your tour is running short on time, I recommend visiting the larger Peradeniya Botanical Garden during your stay in Kandy.

3. Victoria Park

Victoria Park is a beautiful small park in the Nuwara Eliya city cenre that is popular among families travelling with young children. This a great place to visit if you are looking for something that can be enjoyed within an hour.

4. Ambewela farm

Ambewela farm is the largest milk farm in Sri Lanka. If you are visiting Sri Lanka from a country like New Zealand where you find lots of large cattle farms, this would not be a very interesting site for you. Other visitors will find it interesting to see cows and goats in the grasslands and the inner workings of a commercial farm.

5. Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is another popular spot in Nuwara Eliya worthy of a short visit. You may take a paddle boat ride in the lake, enjoy horse riding, or simply have a brief walk around the Gregory Lake taking in the beautiful surroundings.

6. Nuwara Eliya post office

Nuwara Eliya has one of the very first post offices of Sri Lanka, established in 1894. The Tudor-style two-story building is a very iconic one. We often take our guests to this post office, so they can enjoy the site and send a few postcards to their loved ones.

7. Ramboda waterfall

This beautiful waterfall is located 23 km away from Nuwara Eliya. However, you do not need to make a separate trip to see it. You will be passing this picturesque cascade on your way to Nuwara Eliya from Kandy. You may enjoy it from the road and continue the journey to Nuwara Eliya. However, you must go near the waterfall to fully appreciate its beauty.

Frequently asked questions

1. is nuwara eliya good for a honeymoon tour.

Of course, Nuwara Eliya is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in Sri Lanka. The best hotels for a honeymoon tour in Nuwara Eliya are Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya, Heritance Tea Factory, and Jetwing St. Andrews.

2. Can you visit Adam’s Peak as a day tour from Nuwara Eliya?

Adam’s Peak is way too far from Nuwara Eliya to visit it as a day tour from Nuwara Eliya. If you intend to visit Adam’s Peak, book a hotel in Nallathanniya. It is the best base for Adam’s Peak.

3. I wish to take the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. Since I am not using a driver for the Nuwara Eliya - Ella leg, should I send my driver back and hire a different driver from Ella to keep my expenses down?

Keep one driver for the entire tour. It is far less expensive than hiring two drivers for a Sri Lanka trip.

Your drivers are going to charge you for their empty returns too. If you hire a driver starting from the airport to Nuwara Eliya, he will charge you for the distance he travelled and his empty return to Colombo. The driver that takes you from Ella to rest of the locations and the airport will also charge you for his empty return to Ella.

Now compare that to hiring one driver for the whole trip. Since the tour is starting and ending from the same location, there is virtually no extra charge for any empty returns.

There is no argument Nuwara Eliya one of the most beautiful destinations in Sri Lanka. I hope this article helps to have a great time in the tea capital enjoying the tea plantations, waterfalls, Hindu Temples, and amazing hikes.

Once you visit Nuwara Eliya, please come back to this article and share your experience with a comment. Let us know if we have missed any of your favorite things to do in Nuwara Eliya, so we can make this article even more helpful to everyone travelling Nuwara Eliya.
