An OFF! show is like the heist you wish you could be part of - in, bam bam bam, out, taut with adrenaline from when the light's go down. Or in my case, about a week before. They have made three records of thrilling hardcore punk rock harking back to its early 1980's heyday. Keith Morris is a focal point because of well, he's Keith Morris, right? One of the greatest frontmen in my book, Keith has an acerbic line or two and a hugely influential punk rock voice but Dimitri Coats's riffing is thrillingly ferocious and Steven McDonald and Mario Rubalcaba provide one of the tightest, most melodic and punchy rhythm sections you'll ever hear. Tonight, at the Oslo in Hackney, it's insanely hot. It's also sold out. People who've known OFF! since that first EP combine with those curious to check out what the buzz is about. I don't think anyone is let down. OFF! are fast, brief, loud and play punk rock the way it should be played. They can tempo shift with ease, from deliberate riffing to all out furious hardcore. Their sonic assaults are knockout. Raw. And joyful.

The term supergroup is really one of those that you should only really throw around with a degree of caution, but I think anybody worth their salt as far as their U.S. punk knowledge was concerned would happily apply the tag to Off!; after all, they’re comprised of Keith Morris of Circle Jerks and Black Flag, Mario Rubalcaba from Hot Snakes and Rocket from the Crypt, Dimitri Coats of Burning Brides and Steven Shane McDonald from Redd Kross. Their two proper full-lengths to date, including last April’s Wasted Years, have certainly won them plaudits, but it’s really on stage that they come to life; Rubalcaba is a genuine animal behind the kit, Morris brings the kind of energy obligatory for somebody who once fronted arguably the most iconic U.S. punk band ever, and Coats is perhaps the real revelation; previously a frontman, he’s know a superbly-accomplished guitarist for Off!, and he plays the part superbly. Supergroups usually disappoint, but Off! prove that a special alchemy can occasionally take place when talent like this gets together.

only went to Fridays show and it was a blast.I missed the first 2 bands but got to see The Dripps and OFF!.I thought the Dripps were great, for a band that doesnt play that often they killed it but then again half of the band is The Bronx so there you go.OFF was really good as well but I think folks are tired of hearing Keith Morris bitch about how fucked up everything is in our country, citys, towns, etc.Instead of ranting for roughly 15+mins during there set play some music. 15mins equals about 7 maybe 8 songs more.Im just saying. All in all the show was fun and Alexs Bar in L.B. is a pretty cool place to see bands and drink ofcourse. If you havent checked it out yet your lagging

The Off! Show was great! They had dale crover from the melvins on drums, which was awesome! Then the descendents played and killed it! They played all their classic songs. Milo sounded really great and Bill Stevenson still rips on drums. I would defentley go see both bands again. Punk rock is not dead!

Punk Supergroup OFF! Announce New Album and 2022 Tour, Unleash “War Above Los Angeles”: Stream

The new album, titled Free LSD, will be released on September 30th

Punk Supergroup OFF! Announce New Album and 2022 Tour, Unleash “War Above Los Angeles”: Stream

OFF! , the band led by singer Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, ex-Black Flag) and guitarist Dimitri Coats (ex-Burning Brides), have announced their first album in eight years. The LP, titled Free LSD , will arrive on September 30th, and features the just-released new single “War Above Los Angeles.”

Free LSD marks a new era for the group, who recently welcomed new drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Herbie Hancock) and new bassist Autry Fulbright II (…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead) to the lineup.

The band will support the new album with a fall North American tour. The outing kicks off October 24th in Phoenix, Arizona, and runs through a December 17th gig in Los Angeles. Tickets for select shows are available via Ticketmaster beginning Friday (July 29th), with a pre-sale starting Thursday at 10 a.m. local time.

Morris said of the new album, “After making music for as long as I have, it was time to use a palette that includes lime green, turquoise, and magenta instead of the typical colors and shades that were involved in all of the other breakneck and car chase scenarios. Miles Davis with Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters as opposed to [Descendents’] Milo Goes to College. ”

The “War Above Los Angeles” video stars the band alongside Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow, pro skater Don Nguyen, model Chloe Dykstra, Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro, and others. It offers a taste of a feature film, also titled Free LSD , that the band is currently working on.

Coats remarked, “Since thinking of the album as a soundtrack to a weird sci-fi movie gave us permission to experiment, and the film explains, in a fantastical way, the creation of the album, they both go hand in hand as an overall art project.”

Going Off: Meet the Manchester hardcore crew upholding the ideas of community, doing it yourself, and going hard all the time

As they prepare to head out on tour this week, it’s time to say hello to one of the most exciting new bands in British noise. Here’s five reasons to be pumped about Going Off, in their own words…

Going Off: Meet the Manchester hardcore crew upholding the ideas of community, doing it yourself, and going hard all the time

Going Off say they make "aggressive music with elements of punk, hardcore and metal". All true, but what sticks out most about the Manchester quintet is an overriding sense of unity and the gritty feeling of being in it together, a band in the same postcode as the likes of NYHC legends Madball and London scene leaders Knuckledust, both in sound and outlook.

Back in March, they released the excellent What Makes You Tick , a bloodvessel-popping album of relatably angry noise that set them up as one of the finest new-ish outfits in the UK, not to mention one of the most loveably thuggish sounding. Now they're preparing to drop the equally aggy new EP Kill List in December, and head out on the road with Employed To Serve and Pupil Slicer this week.

As a warm-up, we got them to give us the lowdown on the new EP, hardcore, and what makes Going Off tick...

1 Inclusivity and unity are key ingredients to what they’re doing

Everyone's welcome at a Going Off show, and it may as well be you and your mates on the stage. It's an all-for-all, DIY ethos the band are all about, one extended to anyone who wants to be a part of it.

"It’s great to see everyone let loose and express themselves," says singer Jake Huxley. "Inclusivity is a core principle for us. There's no gatekeeping here; we're all about unity. Whether you're a seasoned scene veteran or someone new to the experience, we extend a warm invitation to rock with us.

"To us, hardcore means everybody is equal. No egos. Everybody can do it. [It's about] DIY ethics, community and connection, constantly meeting new people and making friends across the world. It's real, authentic music that makes people move."

2 They’re about standing up for what’s right, especially on your own doorstep

Latest singles Pay The Price and Bed Of Concrete are anger at real issues. The first is a furious warning against men who'd do women harm, and about what they have coming back to them, while the second is a frustrated look at Britain's growing homelessness crisis.

"Pay The Price is about the idea of predatory men having the very evil they inflict on women returned onto them tenfold," explains Jake. "The track speaks of the horrors women suffer, often in silence. It's something that boils our blood enough to 'go off' about. Pay The Price is about giving women confidence to know we'll listen when they speak, calling out men who turn a blind eye to what other are capable of, and these vile people getting their just desserts.

"Bed Of Concrete highlights my annoyance of the fact so many people are forced to suffer a life spent living in the streets," he continues. "There has always been a homelessness crisis in the UK that has gotten worse and worse as we've grown up. We have the resources and means to do more for the homeless but most people walk right by them."

3 They’re not too hard to talk about real emotions

Though most of what Going Off do is a sweaty slap to the head (a fun one), they're not over-testosteroned meatheads. See the song Smile, from Kill List, which deals with having to put up a front when you're just not feeling it, instead of showing what's really going on.

"Smile hits close to home for me, as it's a song about trying to make others realise that they don't have to force a grin every day just to keep up appearances," says Jake. "Life can be tough, and you're allowed to show your real emotions. You don't have to wear a fleshy mask of happiness to conceal how terrible you truly feel from the outside world."

4 They’ve got a slightly morbid, thoughtful side, too

Amongst all this, Going Off also have time to take a more philosophical path. It's something they wonder about on Servant To The Skin, a musing on the very flesh prison in which our spirits are contained.

"I've always been somewhat fascinated by the human body," says Jake. "The fact human consciousness is tethered to these vessels made up of flesh, blood and bone. We're bound to our bodies as they age and wither with time. It's another morbid thought of mine that I wanted to put into my music – the tone of the track definitely suited the theme so I just rolled with it."

5 They want to help you go off as well

If you're angry and fed up and need somewhere to get it all out, a Going Off show is the perfect place to do it. Like a party with more shouting, and more of a contact sport if you're so inclined, you'll emerge with a smile. And possibly some silly new bruises.

"It’s all about letting go, blowing off some steam and kicking off for 20 minutes," enthuses Jake. "We want people to feel like they’re in a safe space and can dance how they choose, let loose how they wish to and to connect with the music. It gets rowdy, but that’s what it’s all about – express yourself."

Going Off's Kill List EP is released on December 1 via Church Road. The band tour the UK with Employed To Serve and Pupil Slicer this week.

Going Off: “There’s a lot of hardcore that has the ‘hard man’ image… None of us are ‘hard’!”

Going Off are aptly named. The Manchester-based hardcore gang are pissed-off, and they’re unleashing it full-force on their sinister new EP, Kill List. But despite all the anger, they’re really just big softies, looking to bring people together…

Fontaines D.C. announce huge 2024 UK and Ireland headline tour

The dates come ahead of their upcoming album ‘Romance’

Grian Chatten vocalist of Fontaines D.C. performs on the main stage during day two of the TRNSMT Festival at Glasgow Green on July 09, 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fontaines D.C. have announced details of a huge UK and Ireland tour, set to kick off later this year. Find ticket details below.

  • READ MORE: Fontaines D.C.’s daring comeback single ‘Starburster’ is their most experimental work yet

Announced today (Friday, April 19), the new dates arrive in celebration of the band’s upcoming album, ‘Romance’ .

Grian Chatten and co. shared news of their fourth LP earlier this week, dropping the pummelling new single ‘Starburster’ and confirming that it will be arriving later this August.

Produced by James Ford ( Arctic Monkeys , Foals , Depeche Mode ), the release will mark the follow-up to 2022’s acclaimed ‘ Skinty Fia ‘ and will be shared via XL Recordings. Visit here to pre-order it.

The new tour dates are set to take place across the latter half of 2024, and kick off on November 20 with an opening night at The Halls venue in Wolverhampton. From there, the tour will continue with a gig at Alexandra Palace in London two days later.

Shows in Cardiff, Plymouth, Nottingham and Manchester are lined up for the remainder of the month, and the final three shows will take place during the first week of December.

The December shows include a gig at First Direct Arena in Leeds (3), Glasgow’s OVO Hydro Arena (4), and finally, a stop at the 3Arena in Dublin on December 6.

Recommended

Support for all dates will come from Sorry , and DIIV will also be joining the Irish band for the gig at Alexandra Palace.

Tickets go on sale next Friday (April 26) at 10am and will be available here . Fans who pre-order the album by 3pm on April 23 will also have access to pre-sale tickets. Check out a full list of new tour dates below.

Grian Chatten of Fontaines DC performs on stage on the second day of TRNSMT Festival at Glasgow Green on July 09, 2022 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fontaines D.C. upcoming UK and Ireland tour dates are:

NOVEMBER 20 – Wolverhampton – The Halls 22 – London – Alexandra Palace 24 – Cardiff – Utilita Arena 26 – Plymouth – Pavilions 27 – Nottingham – Motorpoint Arena 29 – Manchester – Aviva Studios

DECEMBER 3 – Leeds – First Direct Arena 4 – Glasgow – OVO Hydro 6 – Dublin – 3Arena

The 9-date tour through November and December will follow a summer of extensive festival shows for Fontaines D.C., which includes performances at Glastonbury , Reading & Leeds , Fuji Rock, Pukkelpop Festival, and more.

The announcement of ‘Romance’ also came with the release of lead single, ‘Starburster’ – a song inspired by frontman Grian Chatten suffering a panic attack and accompanied by a sinister and cinematic video directed by Aube Perrie ( Megan Thee Stallion , Harry Styles , The Hives ).

Reviewing the track, NME noted how the band had “taken a perfect left turn” , adding: “Leaning on the Massive Attack trip-hop noir vibes first hinted at on ‘Skinty Fia’’s title track, ‘Starburster’ is a pensive art-rock beast that fuses elements of electronica and hip-hop more akin to their fellow striking countrymen (and recent collaborators ) KNEECAP .

“Bravado meets psychedelia as the frontman says he’s ‘over harder than a turned up challenger’ and ‘the pig on the Chinese calendar’.” it added. “The video, too – a fever dream of blood, animals and a cast of misfits trying to find their way – further supports their referencing of Shygirl and Sega Bodega as key inspirations.”

Speaking about the title of the album, bassist Conor Deegan said: “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance. Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as ‘ Dogrel ‘. The second album (‘ A Hero’s Death ‘) is about that detachment, and the third is about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else there is to be romantic about.”

He added: “This record is about deciding what’s fantasy – the tangible world, or where you go in your mind. What represents reality more? That feels almost spiritual for us.”

Since their third album, ‘Skinty Fia’, Fontaines D.C. have also covered Nick Drake’s ‘Cello Song’ for a compilation album .

In December, the band teamed up with Massive Attack and Young Fathers to announce the release of a limited edition 12” single to support Médecins Sans Frontières in their relief efforts in Gaza. The ‘Ceasefire’ EP will arrive on June 1.

Frontman Dan Reynolds says of the new track, “After taking some time off the road and spending time catching up with family and loved ones, I finally have felt the desire to go back to the sonic places that originally brought me the most joy, but with a new outlook and mentality. The world looks much different after being a band for more than a decade. But some things will always remain the same. It’s finding that right balance of nostalgia and freshness that brings me the most joy in the studio. We had a lot of fun making this one and hope you enjoy it too.”

Take That fans spot band using cheeky trick to remember lyrics to their ‘worst song’ on tour

Take That - Howard Donald, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen

Take That kicked off their 2024 world tour in Sheffield earlier this week and fans have spotted the way the trio remember their song lyrics on stage.

The veteran boyband, who formed in 1990 , began their first major tour in five years at the Steel City’s Utilita Arena, playing to a sell-out crowd of 13,000 people.

And when it came time to perform a song that’s over 30 years old now, some of the 13,000 fans in attendance noticed a clever but hilarious trick Gary Barlow , Mark Owen , and Howard Donald were using to remember the words.

The trio was singing I Found Heaven, from their 1992 album Take That & Party, when fans spotted a teleprompter spelling out the lyrics for them on stage.

It’s not one of Take That’s best-known singles – only charting at number 15 in the UK – and Gary, 53, himself has previously described the song as ‘f***ing awful’ and the group’s worst ‘by a huge margin’.

On the setlist, I Found Heaven was sandwiched between A Million Love Songs and Patience, with the group performing 29 of their hits for almost three hours.

However, fans were forgiving of the decision to use the teleprompter, with one saying that with ‘so many great hits’ that it would be hard to remember the words to all of them.

Some of Gary’s monologues between songs were also typed out on the prompter, with the Cheshire-born singer looking back at Take That’s beginnings in Manchester, describing the city as ‘the place to be’ in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Never Forget hitmakers originally split in 1996 after Robbie Williams left the group to go solo, but reformed without Robbie in 2006 and achieved great success with their comeback album Beautiful World.

Robbie, 50, re-joined the group shortly afterward, forming part of the line-up for their third comeback album Progress, but left once again in 2014, continuing to work with Gary on new music after his second departure.

In the 2010s, Robbie was soon followed out of the group by original member Jason Orange , who insisted there had been no arguments or disagreements between the remaining members.

Take That in Japan 1993

Since then, Take That have continued working as a trio, releasing their latest album This Life in 2023 – this latest tour is in support of its unveiling last year.

The tour will last for 41 dates, visiting several cities in the UK and Ireland before jetting off to Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Abu Dhabi, and New Zealand.

In preparation for the tour, Take That joined Lulu on-stage at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to perform their hit single together, Relight My Fire, on the same day Lulu announced she would be retiring from live performances this summer.

The 1960s singer, who broke out with her top 10 hit Shout in 1967, said she would be performing at the Glastonbury Festival in June before calling time on her seven-decade career.
