दमन और दीव का इतिहास करीब 2000 साल पुराना है। दीव का जिक्र तो महाभारत में भी मिलता है। 14 साल के वनवास के कुछ दिन पांडवों ने यहीं पर बिताए थे।

13 वीं सदी में जब यह क्षेत्र चैडा राजपूतों के हिस्से में था जिन्हें वघालाओं ने हराया और वघालाओं को 1330 में मुस्लिम शासकों ने हराया। अगले 200 सालों तक यहां मुस्लिम शासको का राज रहा। अंत में पुर्तगालियों ने 1534 में यहां कब्जा किया और अगले 450 सालों तक यहां राज किया। बाद में गुजरात के राजाओं ने ब्रिटिशों को यहां से बाहर करने की कई कोशिशें की, लेकिन नाकाम रहे। सन् 1559 में दमन पर आखिरकार गुजरात के शासकों का कब्जा हुआ।

दीव फोर्ट 1535 में पुर्तगाली शासन के दौरान बनाया गया था। यह एक समुद्री किला है जो 3 तरफ से अरब सागर से घिरा हुआ है। दीव फोर्ट गुजरात के दक्षिणी सिरे पर स्थित है, जिसे पुर्तगालियों ने अपने औपनिवेशिक शासन के दौरान बनाया था और अब यह भारत सरकार के प्रशासन के अधीन है। किला, पुर्तगाली में ‘प्राका दे दी’ के नाम से जाना जाता है। किले से समुद्र का नजारा बहुत खूबसूरत दिखता है। यह 1535 में गुजरात के सुल्तान बहादुर शाह और हुमायूँ के पुर्तगालियों के बीच गठबंधन के बाद बनाया गया था, जब मुग़ल सम्राट ने इस क्षेत्र पर कब्जा करने के लिए युद्ध छेड़ दिया था।

दीव और किले पर पुर्तगाली शासन को दुनिया में सबसे लंबा औपनिवेशिक शासन माना जाता है। उन्होंने 1524 से 1961 तक (ब्रिटिश से भारत की आजादी के बाद) तक 424 वर्षों तक इस क्षेत्र पर शासन किया, जब भारत सरकार ने “ऑपरेशन विजय” नामक एक सैन्य कार्रवाई शुरू की। पुराने गोवा में बेसिलिका ऑफ बोम जीसस के साथ, दीव किले को पुर्तगाल के सात अजूबों के रूप में सूचीबद्ध किया गया था, लेकिन उनके औपनिवेशिक शासन के दौरान। इस नई उपलब्धि ने किले के महत्व पर प्रकाश डाला और इसे विश्व पर्यटन मानचित्र पर डाल दिया।

Peak Season to visit Diu is from October to February, when the temperature stays below 20 degrees Celsius.

At a distance of 2 km from Diu Bus Station, Diu Fort is an ancient fort located in Diu. Situated near Diu Collectorate, it is one of the historical forts in India and among the prominent places to visit in Diu during your Diu Trip. The Fort of Diu, formally Fortaleza de S�o Tom�, is an expansive and imposing structure situated in the extreme southeast point of the island. It was built by D. Nuno da Cunha in the year 1535 subsequent to a defense alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor attempted to annex this territory. Later, the fort was rebuilt by D. Joao de Castro in 1546. The Portuguese ruled over this territory for 424 years from 1537 to 1961 even after India's independence from British and were ousted from Diu only when the government of India launched a military action called the 'Operation Vijay'. The St. Paul's Church is one of the three churches built by the Portuguese in Diu and is solely dedicated to 'Our Lady of Immaculate Conception'. The construction of the church was started in 1601 and finished in 1610. INS Khukri Memorial

At a distance of 3 km from Diu Bus Station, INS Khukri Memorial is the memorial site of an Indian Naval Ship located on a hillock in Diu. Situated near Chakratirth Beach, it is one of the must-visit places while holidaying in Diu. INS Khukri memorial was set up in 1999 to commemorate the brave martyrs of Indian Navy. INS Khukri, one of the historic Naval Ships of India, fell prey to three torpedoes fired by a Pakistan submarine on 9th December 1971 and sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu. With the ship 18 officers and 176 sailors laid down their lives for the glory of the nation. Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla Mahavir Chakra was the captain of this warship. दमन का प्राचीन काल से ही समृद्ध इतिहास रहा है। यह क्षेत्र अलग अलग समय पर अलग अलग साम्राज्यों का हिस्सा रहा था। पहली बार पुर्तगालियों ने पहली बार 15 वीं शताब्दी के अंत में दमन पर अपना अधिकार स्थापित किया। यह भारत में एक मुख्य पुर्तगाली उपनिवेश बन गया। पुर्तगालियों ने अपने शासन के दौरान यहाँ अनेक किले, चर्च और अन्य संरचनाओं का निर्माण किया।

दमन पुर्तगालियों के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण पोर्ट था और रणनीतिक लोकेशन था। दमन में आर्किटेक्चर उस समय के यूरोपीय प्रभाव को दिखाता है। साल 1961 में, भारत ने “ऑपरेशन विजय” के तहत दमन, दीव और गोवा के क्षेत्रों पर अपना अधिकार कर लिया जो पहले पुर्तगाली नियंत्रण में थे। उसके बाद दमन केंद्र शासित प्रदेश गोवा, दमन और दीव का हिस्सा बन गया।

इसी तरह से दीव का भी इतिहास पुर्तगालियों से पहले अन्य शासकों से जुड़ा रहा है। दीव हमेशा से एक महत्वपूर्ण व्यापारिक केंद्र और पोर्ट रहा है। 16 वीं सदी की शुरुआत में पुर्तगालियों ने दीव पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया। दीव द्वीप की रणनीतिक स्थिति ने इसे व्यापार और रक्षा के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण स्थान बना दिया है। पुर्तगालियों ने दीव किले का निर्माण किया जो एक अजेय किला था। यह किला आज भी दीव का एक ऐतिहासिक स्मारक है।

साल 1987 में गोवा एक अलग राज्य बन गया और दमन और दीव केंद्र शासित प्रदेश के रूप में ही रहे। साल 2020 में दमन और दीव के केंद्र शासित प्रदेश को दादरा और नगर हवेली के साथ मिला कर दादरा और नगर हवेली और दमन और दीव का नया केंद्र शासित प्रदेश बनाया गया। वर्तमान में दमन और दीव एक प्रसिद्द टूरिस्ट सिटी हैं और हर साल बड़ी संख्या में यहाँ टूरिस्ट आते रहते हैं।

Daman and Diu are union territories in the west of India that are separated by the Arabian sea. Despite the divide, the two union territories share a similar characteristic that comprise sun-kissed beaches, archaic colonial forts, and renowned beautiful churches.

They also share a similar rich heritage and culture. We have compiled a list of places that you need to visit when in Daman and Diu. Let’s take a look.

Places to Visit in Daman & Diu

1. nagoa beach.

Situated approximately 20 minutes from the town of Diu, Nagoa Beach is a highly coveted beach amongst the locals as well as tourists. The beach is also a popular picnic spot and lies by the old fishing village of Nagoa.

The most unique feature of this beach is, however, the shoe shape it bends into giving the beach a very unique aesthetic. The beach stretches out over for two kilometers. There are many activities visitors to the beach can engage in like horseback riding, water sports and swimming.

2. Jallandhar Beach

Jallandhar beach is an iconic beach known for being named after the ‘Asura’ (demon) king Jallandara. The beach pays homage to the might of the demon king and also has a stone structure based on his face at the very peak of the surrounding hills.

The beach is blessed with a clean coast and ample sunlight. There are water based activities that are conducted here and if you don’t feel like taking part them; you can also laze in most parts of the beach and catch a good siesta.

3. Diu Fort

A remnant of Portuguese rule, Diu Fort is an architectural marvel that has held strong. The fort was constructed between 1535 and 1541 on the ruins of the Mughal fort that was built by an Arab governor Malekhyaaz.

The fort served as a strategic vantage point for the Portuguese since it is surrounded by the Arabian sea on all three sides and by a canal one the last, making it almost impregnable. You can see leftover canons at the fort, from a time when they were functional. The fort now houses the Diu jail and lighthouse.

4. Gangeshwar Temple

The Gangeshwar Temple is situated in the Fudam village approximately 30 minutes from the town of Diu. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legends have it that the five Shiva Lingas located here had been erected her by none other than the Pandavas during their exile from Hastinapur.

Due to the rich history associated with the temple, it sees a massive influx of devotees every year. The Shiva Lingas are situated by the banks of a sea that are continuously washed by the incoming waves.

5. Somnath Mahadev Temple

The Somnath Temple is a famous shrine amongst various Hindu pilgrims. The shrine is located in the Dabhel village which is an hour’s drive away from Diu. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The shrine is said to have come into existence when a monk in the 19th century requested a shivling to be formed in Dabhel. The shrine commemorates the erection of the Shivling every year by hosting the ‘Gangaji Fair’ that attracts pilgrims from all over.

6. INS Khukri Memorial

INS Khukri Memorial

The INS Khukri Memorial pays homage to the Indian Naval ship that sank during the Indo-Pak conflict of 1971. The warship was sunk when three torpedoes were fired at it by a Pakistani submarine.

The ship sank approximately 40 nautical miles from the coast of Diu. At the time, 18 officers and 176 lost their lives trying to defend the country. The memorial was inaugurated on 15th December 1999 and also houses an amphitheatre in its vicinity.

7. Jampore Beach

A hidden gem by the town of Daman, Jampore beach is an isolated beach by the Gujarat border. The beach lies to the south of Daman and has not seen much commercialization like other beaches.

This is what makes the beach an ideal spot to experience the serenity of nature. The beach is also safe to take a dip into. The beach is well connected by road and rail, with the road being the most ideal means of transport.

The Jetty Garden in Moti Daman is a popular tourist spot. The garden lies on the banks of the Daman Ganga river. What makes this garden unique is the plethora of amenities provided in the garden like rides, lawns large picnic space and seating arrangements that directly overlook the adjacent river.

The garden also has an attractive spot that catches the eye of every tourist. The garden is very close to the taxi stand in Nani Daman and is also accessible by the nearby boat jetty with boats leaving every 30 minutes.

9. St. Paul Church

The St. Paul’s Church is a renowned church in Diu and is visited by hordes of people irrespective of their religious background. The church is dedicated to ‘Our Lady of Immaculate Conception’. The church took over a decade to construct and was completed in the 17th century.

The architecture of the church shows clear signs of influence from the Gothic style and is quite similar to the Bom Jesus Church in Goa. The wood paneling in the church is widely regarded as the best amongst other churches in Diu.

The Naida Caves are situated just by the main Wall of the Diu Fort. It is believed that the Portuguese, during their construction of the Diu Fort would source material from these caves. The caves themselves are a marvel of nature.

They consist of a massive network of tunnels that interconnect with each other and set up a sort of maze. The beauty of the caves and the sunshine that seems through the roof of the tunnels will leave every onlooker mesmerized with its beauty.

11. Sunset Point

Sunset Point is small beach located very close to the heart of the town of Diu. The beach is widely considered the best spot to enjoy watching the sunset. You can also go swimming in the shallow waters.

There is an enclosure that is built by the beach where people can safely sit without getting into the actual beach. Besides the point, there is also a promenade where people come for a stroll during the evenings.

12. Church Of St. Francis Of Assisi

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi is one of the oldest churches in Diu. The church lies in close proximity to the nearby Arabian Sea and offers a panoramic view of the sea. The church was constructed in 1593 by the Friary of the Franciscans.

The church now has been converted into a hospital but it still holds true to most of its architectural integrity. The Delwada railway station is the nearest railway station to the church.

The Church of Bom Jesus was constructed in 1603 in Daman and is considered to be one of the holiest places in Daman. The architectural style of the church is influenced by the Portuguese style. The church has a carved doorway song with heavily ornate interiors and ceiling.

In the church, you will find six statues that depict roman art and architecture. While under the Portuguese dynasty, the church was mostly a parish.

Ghogla Beach is located in the village of Ghogla that is around two hours away from the town of Diu. The beach is a popular vacation spot for many tourists. The beach boasts various amenities including food and accommodation.

The beaches are considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Diu and also houses a tourist complex. Activities like parasailing and jet skiing are conducted at the beach for a nominal fee.

Devka beach is a highly sought after beach very close to Daman. The beach is lined with an amusement park and musical fountains.

The amusement park is kept illuminated on festive days, especially during nariyal Poornima that attracts massive amounts of tourists to this place, making a spectacle to watch.

Diu Museum is the most visited landmark in Diu. The museum now is housed in the St. Thomas Church. Owing to the space constraint in Diu the museum had to be built in the church.

The museum comprises numerous stone inscriptions of the many ancient rulers that once ruled Diu. Besides stone inscriptions, the museum also has a collection of antique statues, multi-coloured fountains, wood carvings and idols.
