Top sights and attractions for kyoto cruises, fushimi inari taisha.

Walk through the famous red torii gates of the Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine complex that was dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, in the 8th century. Located in southern Kyoto, Fushimi Inari Taisha has over five thousand torii gates which lead visitors down winding trails around Mount Inari’s forest and the shrines scattered throughout the area. On this gentle hike, you’ll also see a number of fox statues, as the fox is considered to be one of Inari’s messengers.

Kinkakuji Temple

Admire the sparkling Kinkakuji or Golden Pavilion, a Zen temple covered in gold leaf that is surrounded by a serene lake. This iconic Japanese building dates back to 1397 and was originally a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death, Yoshimitsu’s will stipulated that Kinkakuji become a Zen temple. Since then, Kinkakuji has been burnt down and rebuilt a number of times, most recently in 1955 after a monk torched it to the ground in 1950.

Kiyomizudera Temple

Enjoy the view from Kiyomizudera or Pure Water Temple, a Buddhist temple named after the pristine Otowa Waterfall nearby. Built in 778, the temple is famous for its wooden structure overlooking the city of Kyoto, and for the fact that not a single nail was used in its construction. During your visit, drink a sip from the sacred water of the Otowa Waterfall, which is said to promote good health and longevity. In the main hall, visit the Jishu Shrine that is dedicated to the gods of love and relationships, which supposedly helps worshippers find love.

Top things to do in kyoto, watch a geisha show.

Visit Gion, Kyoto’s geisha and entertainment district, where you’ll stroll by wooden merchant houses, tea houses, and intimate alleys illuminated by lanterns. Enjoy a traditional shabu-shabu meal at one of the many restaurants lining the streets, or catch a maiko or geiko performance at the local theater, where geishas entertain viewers with traditional song and dance.

Admire the Cherry Blossoms at Osaka Castle

Marvel at the Osaka Castle, an impressive building that was once the largest castle in all of Japan. Built by General Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583, the structure has weathered two massive destructions: once from enemy troops in 1614, and another in 1665, when a lightning bolt struck the tower and burnt it down. Today, it houses an extensive collection of art and weapons. The castle’s sprawling garden features over 600 cherry blossom trees and is one of the most popular places in the city during the hanami or viewing season.

Find Serenity at the Ryoanji Temple

Experience the wonder of the Ryoanji Temple’s rock garden, the main attraction at this Zen Buddhist temple, which dates back to 1450. Gaze at the minimalist rock garden made up of 15 large stones surrounded by a white plot of pebbles and moss. Visitors head to Ryoanji every day to find stillness and reflect on the garden’s Zen meaning on their own.

Top Food and Drink in Kyoto

When you visit Kyoto on an Osaka cruise, you’ll be able to sample the city’s expansive food scene, where you’ll find all of your favorite Japanese staples (sushi, soba, and ramen) along with local specialties. Make a reservation for an elaborate multi-course kaiseki meal, or stop by a casual yakitori stand and enjoy smoky barbecue bites. Try tofu in a variety of ways, from boiled to frozen in ice cream. Sip on a hot cup of matcha tea in the morning and down some sake after dinner. For a real taste of the city’s local flavors and ingredients, stop by the Nishiki Market, which has been open for more than 400 years.

Culture and History of Kyoto

For over 1,000 years (from 794 to 1868), Kyoto served as the capital of Japan and the home of the Japanese imperial family, until the Meiji Restoration moved the imperial court to Tokyo. Most of the city was destroyed during the 15th century’s Onin War. A massive reconstruction took place during the Edo period, when the city thrived and rose to prominence as an important economic and cultural center. During World War II, the city was briefly considered as a target for the American atomic bomb, but was thankfully spared at the insistence of Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, who had honeymooned in the city and understood its cultural importance. Today, Kyoto is recognized as the capital of Japanese arts and culture, as well as the center of the Buddhist religion.

Osaka Cruise Port Facilities and Location

On a Kyoto cruise, you’ll dock in the nearby city of Osaka at the Tempozan Passenger Terminal. Nearby, you will find the Osaka Aquarium, the Tempozan Marketplace Mall, and the Universal Studios Japan theme park. To travel to Kyoto, board a high-speed Shinkansen train that reaches the city in less than 20 minutes.

Transportation in Osaka

At the Osaka cruise terminal, you’ll find the Osakako subway station just a few blocks away. The easy-to-navigate subway system takes you around Osaka and also connects you to the train station, where you can travel to nearby cities such as Kyoto and Nara. You can also explore Kyoto on a shore excursion, which includes transportation. Within Kyoto, there are several options for public transportation including subways, buses, and taxis. Kyoto is a mostly flat and compact city, so it’s easy to walk or explore on a bike.

Shopping Near Osaka Cruise Port

Take a short taxi ride from the Tempozan Passenger Terminal in Osaka to Shinsaibashi, a popular indoor arcade, where you’ll find hundreds of shops ranging from large department stores to smaller boutiques. The main shopping areas in Kyoto are clustered near the Kyoto Station and downtown Kyoto. Some of the best souvenirs include locally made Japanese wash, incense, green tea, yukata robes, and ceramics.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Japan is the yen. Credit cards are accepted in major stores and restaurants, but you should carry some cash to pay for taxis and other smaller purchases.  Tipping is not customary in Japan, and in some instances can even be considered rude, so don’t worry about leaving a tip even after an excellent meal or service.

Golden Pavilion

The Kinkakuji Temple, also called the Golden Pavilion for its yellow-colored walls atop a pond in Kyoto, Japan

A traveler's favorite for centuries and one of Japan's most famous sights, the gold-covered main hall of Kinkaku-ji temple seems to float between the sky and the pond of Kyoko-chi that it stands over. It was originally built in the 14th century as a villa for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, a samurai lord. Snap photos while walking around Kyoko-chi, and see the temple from Sekka-tei Cottage — the view from here can't be beat.

Not far from the Golden Pavilion, the Zen temple of Ryoan-ji is famed for its mysterious yet beautiful rock garden. This grouping of 15 rocks set in raked gravel is a delight to contemplate from the veranda of the Hojo, the residence of the temple's head priest. Walk around the tatami rooms, and admire the painted fusuma sliding doors. Don't miss the picturesque tsukubai stone washbasin with a bamboo pipe in the back — designed for the tea ceremony, it's inscribed with a Buddhist maxim saying one should be happy with what one already has.

The red Tori Gates pathway with tall red columns with Japanese letters written in black in Kyoto, Japan

Ten Thousand Gates

Beloved for its spectacular rows of red torii gates, this hilly, sprawling Shinto shrine is dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and business; you'll see statues of his messenger, the fox, everywhere. During your visit to Osaka, take the four-kilometer path up the mountain and lose yourself in this vermilion wonderland — the number of gates totals around 10,000. Small restaurants along the paths sell kitsune udon noodle soup and inarizushi rice balls.

With its intriguing combination of traditional and modern architecture, ancient history and popular culture, Japan has become one of the most sought-after cruise destinations in Asia—not least because so much of the island-nation, with its long coastline, is accessible by water.

International cruise lines finally returned to Japan in March 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19 border closures . The result has been pent-up demand for Japan cruises, and cruise lines have responded by introducing a wide variety of sailings in Japan for this year and next. You can cruise Japan on a smaller, more intimate yacht, an expedition vessel, an ultra-luxury ship, or a large cruise ship with more than 2,000 passengers.

Regardless of which ship you choose, the best Japan cruises feature itineraries that include neon-and-skyscraper cities, tranquil shrines and temples, beautiful parks and gardens, and hot springs and snow-capped peaks, including Mount Fiji. Depending on the time of year you choose to sail, you can enjoy springtime’s cherry blossoms or the crimson leaves of fall. Cruise passengers will also get to experience a wealth of cultural encounters, from local food and customs to colorful arts and entertainment.

For those who are as excited as we are about the return to Japan, here are our picks for the best Japan cruises.

Osaka, Japan Cruises

Osaka is a port city and commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu in the Kansai region at the mouth of the Yodo River on Osaka Bay. This city is known for its excellent casual food and outgoing locals. Along with plenty of shopping, charming side, and modern attractions, the city has a historical side, including the highlight of Osaka Castle. One can easily take a cultural view into the city's ancient history.

Interesting Spots to Visit in Osaka Port

Osaka is a fascinating place with great food, dishes, and friendly locals. Apart from these two, it has several top attractions attached tothe history and geography. To make your port day enjoyable, we have listed our five favorite spots to go to.

1. Explore Dotonbori

Between the Nipponbashi and Dotonboribashi bridges lies this popular destination in Namba. Dotonbori is most famous for its food. Everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to street food is on offer here. The area is lovely to explore at any time of the day, especially at night when the neon lights beam brightly and reflect on the water. There is a neon sign known as the Glico running man on the site that has been on since 1935. The sign has been updated to reflect sports events and teams in Japan . One of Osaka's more famous landmarks, it is often photographed.

2. Osaka Castle

It is one of the must-see places in Osaka. It gives you a feeling that you've stepped back into feudal Japan. The castle may not be among the remaining original ones since it was destroyed during World War II. Still, it is a stunning feature of the city landscape. You can visit the castle's museum if you make your way inside. And if you make your way to the top, you get a stunning view of the city. Several parks and gardens are preserved around the castle and show how feudal leaders defended their positions no matter where they were. There is something beautiful about these gardens, no matter what time of year. There are cherry blossoms in the spring, and autumn leaves in the autumn. Still, the winter plum blossom display is particularly spectacular and fragrant when the rest of the landscape looks stark.

3. The Umeda Sky Building

You will get an incredible view of the city, suburbs, and rivers from the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka, but the building itself is a masterpiece. You can head up from the massive escalators of the building during the daytime or in the evening for some of the most amazing views. Moreover, you can also settle into the bar for a drink and watch the daylight fade and the city light up for the evening. You get a true sense of Osaka city's size from up here.

4. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

This place is an exciting aquatic paradise in Osaka. Aquagate, a tunnel-shaped aquarium that greets visitors as they enter Kaiyukan, is filled with a world of blue. The Pacific Rim in miniature begins as soon as you pass through this intriguing gate! A massive whale shark, adorable penguins, and sea turtles are a few of the exotic marine creatures you will encounter in the aquarium's zones, designed to resemble the natural environment of the sea. When visiting with family in Osaka it's a fun thing to do! This impressive exhibit encourages visitors to contemplate the preciousness of life and the importance of preserving the earth's environment through its majestic and beautiful aquatic animals.

5. Kuromon Market

A large upmarket shopping area called Kuromon Market is within walking distance of Dotonbori. Food shops line the entire market and will satisfy any craving you may have. Kuromon has served as "Osaka's kitchen" for centuries as a professional cook's sticking point. Customers can buy just one portion of fresh seafood, sushi, or grilled fish in today's fish markets. It's not uncommon to see people buying one or two items to take with them when they travel. Customers who wish to savor their food slowly can also eat in the shops. No matter what your palate prefers, you will find something at Kuromon to fit it.

When to Visit Osaka Port?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October and November) are the best months to visit Osaka. The busiest time for cherry blossoms until mid-April is the last week of March, when they begin to bloom.Despite this, the weather is gorgeous until the end of May, when it's pretty warm and sunny. Traveling is not too crowded during summer (June to August), even though it is hot and humid. The rainy season begins in mid-June and continues through July.

Before you travel, you should check the weather, as you may experience a typhoon or short burst of rain. On a positive note, you may still be able to travel since it doesn't rain every day. The best time to visit is from October to November when the temperatures range from 15 to 20 degrees during the day. The coldest months in Osaka are December through February, when temperatures drop to single digits, even though there are no snow days in the city. It is quiet during this time of year, and fewer people are around.

A few of the Tombori River Cruise passengers in awe of the neon lights

Tombori River Cruise in Osaka

Historical Glico billboard, Christmas lights, & Comedy

Jessica A Paje

In one of the liveliest areas of Osaka, Dotonburi (道頓堀, pronounced Dotombori), lays the Tombori River Cruise . A 20-minute cruise along Dotonburi River is a great way to experience the neon city lights from a different angle particularly during the Christmas season. Not only are holiday decorations strung across the bridges, the animated cruise guide even dresses up as Santa Claus! Even though the tour is spoken only in Japanese by a Rakugo comedian, if you pay close attention you might just understand and laugh along. At 700 yen per adult ticket, it’s one of the popular touristy things to do when you’re in Osaka. Not just during the Christmas season, but all throughout the year.

You’ll start by lining up at the Tazaemonbashi Bridge Boat Dock, a 5-minute walk from Namba Station. With seating capacity of about 20 passengers, be sure to bundle up for chilly nights. Once comfortable you’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the fun electronic displays and mechanical ones, too. Photo tip: apply a low light exposure and action setting for best coverage at night along the canal (Ugh! I didn’t realize this myself until I reviewed my pictures after the cruise was finished).

The highlight of the course was when the boat paused beneath the Ebisubashi Bridge where the Glico man billboard shines bright above. Glico is one of Japan’s largest food distributors and is popularly known for its Pocky (crunchy petite biscuit sticks covered in frosting such as chocolate or strawberry). A landmark since 1935, locals & tourists alike so often use it as a meeting spot while enjoying a takoyaki (octopus dumplings) appetizer. Across from Glico is the Asahi beer billboard. Watch closely because the colors change from solid white to yellow as the mug is topped off with “Super Dry” formula.

According to the brochure , boats depart every half hour. Infants & children are allowed; 300 yen for Elementary students. Rest your feet, wrap your arm around your sweetheart(s) and enjoy the cruise. With nine bridges, a panoramic view of Osaka Minami and the comedy of the tour guide, you’ll experience some of the best views of Downtown Osaka on the Tombori River Cruise .

WHATSINPORT.COM: YOUR CRUISE GUIDE TO 1200 PORTS OF CALL

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, kobe osaka japan cruise port guide.

There are two cruise terminals. “ Naka pier cruise terminal ” which is right downtown and “ Kobe port termina l”, which is linked by the Kobe Port Liner to downtown in only 5 minutes.

The “Port Liner” is a driverless train, very frequent, which runs between Kobe Airport and the main railway station at Sannomiya. Its station (Port Terminal) is above and virtually part of the cruise terminal buildings and it offers a cheap and very convenient way of reaching the airport or the main train station at the end of a cruise. (The bullet train station is further inland and requires a change at Sannomiya).

Naka pier cruise terminal is right in the center of Kobe. Mostly used by smaller cruise lines and non turnaround cruises. You will be greeted by brass bands and traditional Taiko, or Japanese drums. It is located on the first two floors of the huge Kobe Meridian Park Oriental Hotel. The Oriental is an obvious choice for an embarkation or disembarkation stay.

The Port of Kobe is located by the base of Mount Rokko, right by the Kobe Port Tower. The tower has an observation deck that's a little over 90 meters high.

Sightseeing:

Kobe is a scenic port city featuring a world-class international trade port, the lush green backdrop of the Rokko Mountains, and busy commercial and amusement districts.

The waterfront area called "Nadagogo" has the largest concentration of sake breweries in Japan. Here, expertly skilled sake breweries transform pure "miyamizu" spring water from Mt. Rokko and superior quality "yamadanishiki" rice into famous brands of sake.

Kobe's main attraction for the Japanese is its concentration of Western-style houses, some dating back to the days when Kobe was opened for foreign trade in 1868. Europeans who grew up in similar scenery may find them less fascinating.

Ijinkan (walking distance from either Sannomiya or Shin-Kobe stations) Kobe's number-one attraction is the Ijinkan or Barbarian Houses. These are 19th-century residences of Kobe's foreign traders, clustered in the Kitano area.

Kyu-kyoryuchi , near Motomachi station (Hanshin Line or JR Line). This is where foreign consulates and trading companies built their offices. Several 19th-century buildings have been converted into restaurants and shops. Notable buildings include Chartered Square, once the Chartered Bank branch and the 15th Building, once the American consulate. The area is also packed full of high-fashion boutiques like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Fendi.

Meriken Park near the harbor front has a poignant memorial to the devastating Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, which killed 6,433 people. Kobe Tower nearby is the unofficial symbol of the city and offers a viewing pavilion (¥600).

Fruit Flower Park , 35 min by bus from Sannomiya, Open daily is 10 AM to 6 PM (except on holidays). This park is surrounded by a lot of flowers and greenery. Many people hold their wedding ceremonies here every year. In spring, the park becomes even more beautiful as about 10,000 tulips bloom. The Hotel Fruit Flower is near the park, which is visited by many families.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The Naka Pier Terminal is served by two bus routes, the Kobe Port Loop and the Kobe City Loop. They are both one-direction routes running in the clockwise direction.

The Kobe Port Loop uses a standard size bus and serves the major Kobe stations: Sannomiya for JR and Shin Kobe for the Shinkansen train. It also goes to the Kanomeria terminal for the Kobe Port Liner for anyone from the Kobe Port Terminal.

The second loop is the Kobe City Loop. It is a (cheap) hop-on-hop-off serving the same transport stations as the Kobe Port Loop plus other Kobe attractions like Chinatown and the ropeway up Mount Ryokyo .

A one-day pass for both Loop lines is 600 yen. You can buy the pass at the information desk at the Naka Pier Terminal.

When you board a taxi, note that the vehicle's left rear door is opened and closed remotely by the driver. You are not supposed to open or close it by yourself. Furthermore, you are not supposed to tip taxi drivers, as the service is included in the price.

If you do not speak Japanese, or your destination is not a well known place, it is recommended to give your driver the precise address of your destination on a piece of paper or, even better, point it out on a map, since the Japanese address system can be confusing even to local taxi drivers.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Kyoto (30 min. by bullet train, 60 min. by bus) Surrounded by rolling hills and containing many old shrines and temples, its history goes back 1,200 years. There are traditional events such as the three major festivals, and the send-off bonfire. Traditional crafts and arts like Nishijin brocade and Yuzen and Kiyomizu pottery, and exquisite Kyoto cuisine can also be enjoyed. Nara (90 min. by bus) Even more ancient than Kyoto. The Nara area includes Nara Park, where groups of deer frolic with the tourists, Nishi-no-kyo with temples in the midst of a pastoral landscape, Ikaruga, famous for the Horyuji Temple, a mountain road winding through ancient burial mounds, Yamanobe-no-michi, Asuka, an area rich in the romance of a bygone age and many other places of charm and beauty. Himeji (20 min. by bullet train, 60 min by bus) Located in the warm, fertile Banshu Plain facing the Inland Sea, Himeji was a prosperous castle town. The famous Himeji Castle, White Heron Castle, is recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site and in Japan as a national treasure. The city itself has many dignified historic sites unique to this castle town.

Osaka 's (20 min. 60 min by bus) highlights include Osaka-jo and its surrounding park, Osaka Aquarium with its enormous whale shark, the Blade Runner night scapes of the Dotombori area and the wonderful Open Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses. But Osaka has more to offer than its specific sights; like Tokyo , Osaka is a city to be experienced in its totality, and casual strolls are likely to be just as rewarding as structured sightseeing tours.

Shopping and Food

The currency in Japan is the yen. It comes in denominations of ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 notes, as well as ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1 coins.

ATMs in Japan are becoming more useful, and most can be used to withdraw funds from overseas accounts. Post offices also offer ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted at a majority of stores and restaurants in large urban areas, but if you plan on spending any time in rural areas, be sure to carry sufficient cash. Japan is still very much a cash society and some stores, hotels and restaurants-regardless of location-refuse credit cards.

Don't tip, as it's considered rude!

Communication:

Cafes which offer free WiFi for customers are springing up all over the country. Costs vary, with some coffee shops offering free Wi-Fi services and others charging by the hour for cable-enabled PCs

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Shops and department stores in Japan are generally open daily, including national holidays (with the exception of New Year's), from 10:00 or 10:30am to 7:30 or 8:00pm. Some specialty shops are closed Sundays and national holidays. Department stores are sometimes closed one day a week on an irregular basis, but since closing days vary for each store, shoppers can always find stores that are open.

A view of downtown Port Osaka Japan

Osaka, Japan

Think of Osaka, Japan (accent on the O ), as a combination of Los Angeles and Chicago. It very definitely has L.A.’s second-city complex, but its attitude is pure Chicago. The only business that matters is business, and so what if the Hanshin Tigers, the local baseball team, are frequently the worst professional athletes in the world? They’re the home team. People in Osaka laugh louder, play harder and drink more than Tokyo’s most decadent dreams. Osaka even has its own dialect, one the rest of the country calls “dirty Japanese,” one entirely different than even Kobe’s—and Kobe is an Osaka suburb.

Nothing is old in Osaka. The place was flattened during the war (and then again in 1962 and 1989, by Godzilla). During the reconstruction, they forgot to include much in the way of parks or green space, and the sheer amount of concrete and steel sights can get overwhelming.

But Osaka has its attractions and interesting things to do. Sumo wrestlers wait for trains, reeking of chanko-nabe (traditional sumo food; pure energy and calories), just daring the official railway pushers to push them. Yakuza (Japanese gangsters) get train cars to themselves, but if you get on with them, it’s like you’re invisible. Busy markets, the visual noise of neon and nonstop action on shopping streets offer insight into the energy and ambition of Osaka.

And if all that isn’t enough, Osaka is less than an hour from some of the most beautiful temples, shrines and ancient Japanese tourist attractions in the world—a thousand years of Japanese history—waiting in the old capitals of Kyoto and Nara.

Osaka (for Kyoto), Japan

Description.

For centuries, Osaka was Japan's cultural and commercial gateway to Asia - the point of entry both for trade goods and, most importantly, cultural influences that shaped Japanese society. From tea to Zen, from art to science and philosophy, Osaka was Japan's contact with the great East Asian cultures that flourished in China and Korea. The city reached its zenith in the late 16th century, when the great feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi made Osaka his capital. Toyotomi was master of Japan, and an immense administrative and commercial center rapidly developed around Osaka Castle. After Toyotomi's death, the nation's seat of power shifted from Osaka to a sleepy little fishing village called Edo - modern Tokyo. While overshadowed by Tokyo, Osaka remains Japan's second largest city and a vital commercial center. Modern Osaka is home to monuments from Japan's past including Toyotomi's immense castle and the Sumiyoshi Shrine. The city is also your gateway to Kyoto, Japan's ancient imperial capital and the nation's cultural and spiritual center.

Founded in 778, the temple is one of the most celebrated in Japan and renowned for its great veranda, supported by hundreds of pillars, which sticks out over the hillside, looking over Kyoto.

Set in a magnificent strolling garden, the pavilion extends over a reflecting pond and the top two floors are completely covered in gleaming gold leaf.

Built by Tokugawa's first shogun, the majestic 410-year-old castle is the site of two lavish palaces.

Dating back to 745, records show that more than 2,600,000 people helped build the world's largest wooden building and the world's largest bronze Buddha that rests inside the Great Hall.

One of Japan's most famous castles, the grounds cover 400 acres and contain 5 structures. The Castle's garden is famous for its 600 cherry trees and the site of an annual cheer blossom festival.

One of Kyoto's oldest and most revered Shinto shrines, it holds all of Japan's 40,000 shrines dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, sake and prosperity.

Originally built as an aristocrat's villa and converted into a Zen temple in 1450, the temple is noted for its beautiful Zen rock garden, exquisite grounds, and teahouses.

Also known as the Awata Palace, Kyoto's 800-year-old Buddhist temple offers a contemplative escape from the everyday. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around its gardens or admire the many charming sights tucked inside.

Tokyo is the most popular departure point and has two ports – the new Tokyo International Cruise Terminal close to the centre and Yokohama, around 45 minutes from the city. Start your journey with a few days in this modern metropolis, exploring the historic Asakusa district, the upscale shopping area of Ginza, and the imposing Tokyo Tower.

On the island of Honshu, the adjacent ports of Kobe and Osaka (Kyoto) are also popular departure points. In Osaka, delve into the lively entertainment and shopping precinct of Dotonbori, or have a serene stroll through the pretty gardens around the historic Osaka Castle. From the port, it’s just 15 minutes by Shinkansen bullet train to the ancient city of Kyoto. This cultural hotspot is resplendent with UNESCO World Heritage sites, with Buddhist temples, serene shrines, tea houses and geishas strolling the alleyways, giving visitors a glimpse into the past.

Another popular cruise stop is Hiroshima, a city of peace and resilience. From the port, visitors can easily reach the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, which commemorates the atomic bomb that destroyed the city during World War II. The port of Shimizu is the closest to Mt Fuji and you can sit in an onsen while gazing at the venerable peak. Foodies will love Fukuoka, a city known for its delicious regional delicacies.

Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is known for its stunning natural landscapes. Major cruise ports like Hakodate and Otaru serve as gateways to the island's numerous national parks, hot springs, and ski resorts.

Spring, from March to May, is a great time for cruising in Japan due to the breathtaking swathes of cherry blossom (Sakura). In the Sakura season, cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are enveloped in beautiful clusters of pink and white flowers. Autumn, from September to November, is another season of immense natural beauty. Leaves transform into brilliant sunset shades, and in Kyoto, the vivid foliage creates enchanting backdrops for the ancient temples and shrines.

Absolutely! Many cruise lines in Japan boast loads of kid-friendly activities, such as swimming pools, sports courts, interactive games, educational programs, and dedicated play areas for children. Some ships even have kids’ clubs for littlies and teen clubs with video games and DJ workshops.

Cruises offer a mix of international dishes and Japanese specialties, from sushi to tempura. When sailing around Japan, ships will have a higher percentage of Japanese passengers and will tailor their menu to suit their tastes. Many cruise lines have a dedicated Japanese restaurant, serving sushi or kaiseki cuisine. Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships have a Teppanyaki restaurant onboard. Here, diners gather around the edges of a large flat surface hot grill as a skilled chef prepares flavourful steak, shrimp, chicken, vegetables, and seafood right in front of them.

The official currency of Japan is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While credit cards are widely accepted in Japan, there are still some smaller areas that might only accept cash. Be aware that many Japanese ATMs (especially those attached to banks) will not accept foreign cards, so you won’t be able to withdraw cash. Look for the specially marked ATMS in convenience stores or post offices. Onboard the ship, most cruise lines are cashless, allowing you to put everything on your room card and pay the bill at the end.

For cruises that stay within Japanese waters, the average duration is seven to 10 days. For a cruise departing from Tokyo, this will take you to four or five ports in Japan as well as one port in South Korea, like Jeju Island or Busan. For in depth immersion, cruises of two weeks or more will take you on a full circumnavigation of multiple Japanese islands, calling at a dozen ports across the country.

Yes, many cruises offer tea ceremonies, sushi-making classes, and traditional Japanese performances. Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess elevates the Japanese experience with the onboard Izumi Japanese Cooling Bath and Izumi Hot Tubs, for a traditional Japanese bathing experience.  They also hold ‘Festivals of the World’ where guests enjoy a Japanese festival right on the ship, complete with traditional dances and music.

You should always check the entry requirements for each country you visit, as the entry requirements vary depending on the passport you are travelling on. Australians for example are granted a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in Japan. Some Japanese cruises also stop in South Korea, if your cruise has a stop in South Korea, you will also need to check the entry requirements.

Many cruises in Japan will have a strong focus on Japanese culture and traditions, offering an immersive program of shore excursions. Passengers will enjoy traditional tea ceremonies, visit castles and shrines, learn to make washi paper, sip sake at ancient breweries, meet a geisha, and practice origami. Culinary cruises will take you on a gourmet adventure, with exquisite cuisine both onboard and on shore. Excursions will take you to restaurants, markets and unique local producers. For bloom hunters, cherry blossom themed cruises sail in spring and will take you to the best spots for ‘hanami’ (flower viewing).

Yes, yes, yes! Japan is at the forefront of luxury travel and so it’s only natural that some of the world’s most exclusive cruise ships would be sailing here. They boast opulent suites, fantastic fine dining, indulgent spas and attentive service – including a butler or two. Try Regent Seven Seas, Scenic, Silversea, Seabourn, Ponant, Crystal Cruises and Oceania.

Osaka, Japan

The city possesses a plethora of museums, with focuses ranging from ethnography to art to natural history. Osaka Castle is regarded by locals and visitors alike as a historical and cultural symbol of the city that is not to be missed. Unforgettable are the various types of bridges that span Osaka's waterways and the many sloping roads throughout the metropolis. Sky-scraping landmarks like the Tsutenkaku Tower, the WTC Cosmotower and the Floating Garden Observatory are interesting sights from ground level, but they offer spectacular views from their top stories. Adventurous types may want to brave the Tempozan, the world's largest Ferris wheel.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The plan is to go to Tokyo 5 days, Kyoto 4 days and Osaka 3 days with 2 days allowed for travel to and from Japan - 2 weeks all up.

Firstly, I do not know if the number of days allocated in each of these places would be enough, too long or too short to have a good authentic unrushed experience with enlough time to visit all the many touristy things as well as going off the beaten track or just watching the world go by without rushing around like a headless chicken, so I would appreciate some input on that please.

Our areas of interest are history, ancient history, street photograpy, experiencing authentic local culture and then some high tech AI/robotics/humanoids stuff for hubby, specifically in Tokyo. We've seen countless temples and pagodas througout Asia so we're not particularly interested in those unless they're exceptional or of some great historical/cultural significance.

We also do not have a clue which areas to stay in in any of these cities. We would like to be close to where things happen within walking distance and also close to transport.

Would appreciate any pointers to get started please.

Is a good place to start with planning.

I think your days allocated to each city is fine.

Tokyo has so much to see that you’ll fill your days.
