  • How do I travel between Rota and Jerez de la Frontera Airport to catch Ryanair Flights? (As of March 2015)
  • NOTE:  Ryanair may not have service from Jerez all year round so check their schedule or consider Seville as a backup.
  • First route is to take a COMES coach to Jerez (around 5 euros, 30 minutes) and then a taxi or another bus to the Jerez airport. Lines M-050 & M-051 runs 5 & 10 times a day, respectively, between Jerez City and the Airport (around 0.85 euros, 30 minutes).
  • The COMES coaches travel several times a day from Rota to Seville with a stop in Jerez along the way. The fare on a COMES coach from Rota to Jerez is around 5 euros, 30 minutes. These coaches depart Rota from just outside the main gate at Rota.
  • Another (less expensive) route is Linea M-560 from Rota to Jerez City, then either Linea M-050 or Linea M-051 from Jerez City to Jerez Airport, 2.40 euros, about 75 minutes. COMES coach from Rota to Jerez, then either Linea M-050 or Linea M-051, around 5 euros, about an hour. Only one Linea M-560 bus per day from Rota to Jerez. COMES operates up to 4 coaches per day from Rota to Jerez.
  • To find the bus stops and timetables, click on the appropriate Linea and then on the appropriate bus stop (e.g. "Estacion de autobuses") at http://www.cmtbc.es/index.php

  • Linea M-050 Timetable : Use for Jerez city to Jerez Airport
  • Information on fares, ticket sales and a route planner is available at http://www.cmtbc.es/index.php
  • How do I travel between Rota and Moron AB? (Current as of Aug 2009)
  • You can always rent a car from the NEX Car Rental but the drop fee may be hefty ($150). So, a cheaper route is to take a bus from Rota to Puerto Santa Maria (3 euro) then take a train to Utrera (6 euro) or Seville (9 euro). From Utrera you can take a taxi (negotiate your price with the driver first!) and the 20-mile trip should cost approx 35 euros. The taxi cannot enter the station but hopefully you already have reservations at the billeting (Hotel de la Frontera) and they will come and get you at the gate.
  • How do I get from Rota to Faro?
  • From the bus station (just outside Rota gate) take a bus to Seville's Estacion del Prado de San Sebastion bus station, then take the C4 city bus (short ride, luggage OK) to the Plaza de Armas bus station where you can get a bus to Faro Portugal. An independent tour of Galicia, Spain’s hidden gem

Having traveled extensively in Spain over the years, in May 2017 we set our sights on an area new to us, the rugged region of Galicia, in the northwest corner of the country.

View of María Pita Square in A Coruña.

Because I am a military retiree, we are able to catch hops on US military aircraft to many wonderful destinations, and getting to Spain from Charleston, South Carolina, was relatively easy. Our 8-hour flight from Charleston to a Navy base in Rota, about two hours by bus south of Seville, delivered us there in mid-morning.

Just off base, we went straight to a local travel agency, Paco Travel, to arrange the beginning of our trip. We don’t like to plan ahead too much; serendipitous travel is our style.

Flights from Seville to the major Galician cities do not run frequently, but we found a great one leaving the next morning. We traveled by bus to Seville and on to Seville’s airport the next morning. In just over an hour, a comfortable nonstop Vueling Airlines flight took us to A Coruña (aka La Coruña in Castilian Spanish), a thriving city near Spain’s northwest tip.

Our first impressions of A Coruña — from our over-the-water descent to the lush green scenery, the unique Galician architecture and our “room with a view” overlooking the beach at Hotel Riazor ( Avda. Pedro Barrie de la Maza 29 ), which cost about €75, or $90, per night with breakfast — were very positive and justified our decision to explore this seldom-visited region of Spain.

We were not the first to discover this magnificent corner of Spain. The Romans, who came and settled this beautiful seaside region thousands of years ago, built what is today the oldest continually operational lighthouse (yes, it still functions) in the world, the Tower of Hercules.

We climbed all 234 steps to the top of the tower, together with many other visitors, and were rewarded with wonderful views of the city, its ports and sweeping beaches. The only downside of being in A Coruña was that there were three cruise ships in port on one day, which brought thousands of tourists there to flood its sites, bars and cafés. As in Barcelona, Ketchikan, etc., the cruise industry has had a powerful impact on this previously untouched northwest corner of Spain.

Sunset on the beach in A Coruña.

Exploring A Coruña, with its unique Galician galerias (glass-fronted balconies), the magnificent Plaza de María Pita and the charming Old Town with its Synagogue Street (hinting of the Jews who once lived there), was a delight.

A casual, fresh-fish lunch near Plaza de María Pita at Marisquería O’Calexo ( Rúa Franja 19) , serving traditional Galician food, was delicious and inexpensive (under €10 each). And to our surprise, our hotel was just steps from Casa Museo Picasso ( Calle Payo Gómez 14) , where, from age 9 to 13, Picasso lived with his family near the art school where he studied, initially under the guidance of his father, a teacher at the school.

Venturing to Vigo

After a 3-night stay in A Coruña, we left this gem of a city and headed south on a 1½-hour fast train to Vigo to continue exploring this special part of Spain. Fortunately, our very comfortable, modern 4-star boutique hotel in Vigo, Agua de Mar ( Calle Lepanto 12 ), was just a stone’s throw from the Vigo-Urzáiz train station and well located for our stay there. (We booked our room through an online booking site for €75 per night.)

A city bus on a circular route (which we boarded near our hotel) gave us a good introduction to Vigo, and the steep hills (like those in San Francisco) gave our hearts and legs a rigorous workout!

At the top of our list was the tiny medieval Casco Vello (Old Town), situated on a steep hill with a jumble of narrow cobblestone lanes named Basketmakers’ Street, Hatmakers’ Street, etc. We had this area virtually to ourselves, as the city was void of conspicuous visitors during our stay.

On a surprisingly warm and sunny day (it is often overcast and chilly in Vigo), we enjoyed a delicious al fresco lunch of local specialties on a flower-filled Old Town restaurant terrace at Restaurante Don Quijote ( Rúa de Laxe 4 ). We enjoyed the Menú del Día (less than €10 per person) and a sweeping panoramic view of the busy port below.

Our day came to a delightful and relaxing conclusion with creative, complimentary tapas served at several bars.

Galicia’s Jewish past

Our trusty, old-but-still-useful Lonely Planet guidebook convinced us to spend an extra day in Vigo to explore one of the best Jewish heritage sites in all of Europe: the little town of Ribadavia.

From Vigo-Guixar station, we took a marvelous, early-morning, 1½-hour trip by local train past rolling hills and rushing rivers and through vineyards and thick, green, wooded forests to Ribadavia. The only tourists in town, it appeared, we headed uphill for a fascinating excursion.

While Ribadavia is famous as the center of the Ribeiro white-wine industry of Galicia, our focus was its Jewish history. Some say this was home to 1,500 Jews in the Middle Ages who prospered there until their expulsion in 1492.

In Ribadavia’s Jewish Quarter, we found streets with names like Jerusalem Street, a building that might have been the town’s synagogue and a fabulous bakery ( Tafona da Herminia , Travesía Porta Nova 2 ) selling traditional Sephardic cookies, including one in the shape of a Star of David. (We munched on a sample of these artisanal delights on our return train trip!)

In Ribadavia’s main square, Praza Maior, we found the excellent Jewish Information Centre of Galicia, with a museum that shared with us the story of Jewish history in the region. The Jewish Quarter there is one of the best-preserved historical Jewish sites in Spain.

Pontevedra and points beyond

In less than 15 minutes by fast train from Vigo-Urzáiz station we were in Pontevedra, once Galicia’s largest city and the place where the Santa María , Columbus’ flagship, was built. The delightful Pontevedra of today is more tranquil, and, with several buildings of historical interest, it was the perfect place for a short stay.

Carole at the Sephardic bakery, with owner, Herminia, in Ribadavia

We stayed in Hotel Galicia Palace ( Avda. de Vigo, 3 ) for about €65 per night. It was located within walking distance of the Old Town, with more than a dozen attractive colonnaded small plazas in its old quarter. We had a hard time selecting where to eat and drink in the area — so many choices! — but we settled on a fantastic gourmet find for lunch, Borona ( Travesía del Comercio, 3 ), where we enjoyed the Menú del Día for about €10 per person.

With decent weather, our stay in Pontevedra was exactly what we needed before heading by train to the more tourist-centric Santiago de Compostela.

What a contrast the frantic crowds of Santiago were to the quiet beaches, cafés and vineyards of the four other Galician cities we had visited. Immediately upon our arrival, this most-visited city in Galicia felt like Disneyland, as throngs of tour groups, independent travelers, pilgrims, trekkers, bicyclists and others from all over the world crowded its narrow streets and lined up at its churches, bars and cafés.

Inside the Cathedral, we joined the hordes and descended below ground to glimpse the ornate silver tomb of (we were told) the Apostle Saint James, after whom the city is named.

For over a thousand years, faithful pilgrims have made the nearly 500-mile trek on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) across northern Spain in reverence.

The Cathedral and its surrounding museums were the focus for us (and others). Unfortunately, the grand Portico of Glory, at the front of the Cathedral, was shrouded and covered with scaffolding, as the Cathedral was undergoing major renovations.

Nevertheless, we continued into the massive Cathedral, marveling at its grandeur, and visited the Cathedral museums, “home” to royal tombs, a magnificent old library, priceless Flemish and Spanish tapestries and other religious treasures.

Afterward, a guide explained the history of the site as we toured the Cathedral roof, giving us spectacular, panoramic views of the city.

Our last day in this city was unstructured and relaxing. Avoiding the packed streets on which we had previously found ourselves, we ventured farther afield, randomly discovering delightful plazas, leafy parks, quiet lanes and hidden narrow alleys. A fountain here and a sculpture there, a street juggler and a Galician bagpiper viewed from a café terrace, all were delightful pleasures. We even found a tiny bit of the old Jewish quarter of Santiago de Compostela’s Ruela de Xerusalén (Jerusalem Alley).

In the “it’s a small world” category, we bumped into and had coffee with the young lady who had been our guide at the Casa Museo Picasso in A Coruña over a week before.

It was time to say adiós to this lovely corner of Spain. We boarded a high-speed train for the pleasant journey back and headed south, via Madrid, to Seville on another high-speed train, continuing to the Rota Navy Base, where we caught a flight back to Charleston, concluding our latest marvelous Spanish odyssey.

Reflections

Once home and recovering from jet lag, we looked back on our time in Galicia, an area vastly different from the rest of Spain.

View of María Pita Square in A Coruña.

They speak a different language, Galego, which is far older than the Castilian Spanish spoken elsewhere in Spain. The Galician culture is related to that of the Celts, explaining the haunting sounds of bagpipes that we often heard throughout the region.

And it was not surprising that this coastal region is very big on seafood, especially octopus (pulpo) and shellfish. The fresh-from-the-sea fish we tasted was delicious.

While most of Spain is dry and brown in the summer, the rain-drenched and windswept region of Galicia was lush and green, with verdant misty mountains, rushing torrents and dense forests. Fog drifting in from the sea in the mornings turned into sunny afternoons, and its beaches and bays were stunning as well.

We were delighted to have had the experience.

Rediscovering Rota, Spain: things to do, wines to taste and new restaurant options to try!

Rota is a delightful coastal town in the Southern Spanish province of Cadiz, that we love to visit every so often. Famous amongst Spaniards for its long sandy beaches and gorgeous weather, Rota also has a particularly vibrant food and wine scene . In this article we offer an overview of what to do in Rota to later share  our latest local food and wine discoveries . ¡Vamos!

A church, a wine and a dish from Rota, Spain

What to do in Rota, Spain

Stroll around its impeccable old town and visit its surprising landmarks.

Rota old town is well worth a relaxed walk. Amongst its narrow whitewashed streets and remains of the old city gates, you will find an impressive medieval castle dating from the 13th century (Castillo de Luna) and a majestic main Church (Nuestra señora de la O) dating from the 16th century.

Main castle and main Church in Rota, Southern Spain

These two landmarks are an absolute must in our opinion. This is not only because of their beauty and historical interest but also because of the authenticity that surrounds them.

Local homes, casual bars, a relaxed local ambiance and a general lack of tourist tack add an extra charm to the oldest sections of Rota.

Visit the local market for a glimpse of everyday life

Rota is popular for its agriculture and fishing. Fruits, vegetables and fish from Rota are of excellent quality. One can see evidence of this in the local food market, where there are many stalls with fabulous local produce on display.

Also, the main food market in Rota has a few local bars serving coffee, food and drinks. This is where we recommend to start a food and wine journey of the town . Let’s begin with some local wines!

Taste the new wines from Rota by Bodegas el Gato

On this last visit to Rota, we had the pleasure to taste the newest range of wines by local winery Bodegas El Gato . The name of this new range is Tehigo and it features two white wines (one dry, one semisweet) and one red.

Bodegas el Gato started in 1957 and has specialised since in fortified wines . However, the 4th generation of wine-makers in the family, led by Laura López and Ana Navarro (cousins), pushed the idea of launching a new range of non-fortified wines.

the two female managers of bodegas el gato

Ana Navarro (left) and Laura López (right). Winemaker and manager of Bodegas el Gato in Rota

This new approach to wine making is also present on the labels of these new wines, which feature a modern illustration of a cat (gato in Spanish) designed by the local painter Carlos García Román .

Wine labels with a cat on it

Tehigo dry white wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is a 100% Palomino white wine fermented at low temperature (15°C). This allows to extract all the aromas and subtleties of this rather stigmatised grape, which was always considered too neutral to make young white wines.

The new winemakers in the province of Cadiz, Southern Spain are now proving how much character the local albariza soil can give to 100% Palomino white wines . We believe that Bodegas el Gato has done a great job with their contribution to this new trend.

Their dry Tehigo white wine has that distinct minerality and salinity that the albariza soil is famous for  as well as some interesting green fruit and floral notes.

Tehigo Semi-sweet white wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is also a 100% Palomino white wine fermented at low temperature (15°C), which keeps a small amount of natural sugar from the grapes .

Two bottles of Tehigo white wine. One dry and one semiweet

Tehigo white wines by Bodegas el Gato. Dry (left) and semisweet (right)

We very much liked the idea of a slightly sweet white wine made with grapes often associated with dry sherries. The result is a very light wine with a slight sweet beginning and a very short and subtle aftertaste.

Tehigo red wine by Bodegas el Gato

This is a 100% Tintilla de Rota red wine, made with the technique of carbonic maceration. The goal of using this technique was to extract all the fruitiness from this grape, which is native to Rota, hence its name.

A bottle of Tehigo Red wine from Rota

Tehigo Red is a young, light and fruity single-vineyard wine. With this wine Bodegas el Gato wants their Tintilla grapes to express all their potential. It has a spicy beginning that later gives way to an explosion of fruitiness that we found well suited to gentle Spring weather and light dishes .

These local wines are ideal to pair with the corresponding local dishes, so further below we give some recommendations on food and wine pairings from Rota.

Where to eat in Rota: local food festivals and recommended local dishes

There are fabulous places to eat as well as frequent food and wine events and festivals all year round in Rota . The most popular of these festivals is “Feria de la Urta” and it takes place every year at the end of June / beginning of July.

Urta is the Spanish term for red-banded sea bream and yes, Rota pays tribute to it not only with a food festival but also with its most popular local recipe . This is “ Urta a la roteña ” (red-banded seabream cooked Rota style).

Seam Bream cooked Rota Style

Urta a la roteña is one of the many dishes that you can try in Restaurante el Embarcadero . This is the restaurant of the 4 star hotel Duque de Nájera . A lovely hotel that is a stone’s throw from the aforementioned landmarks and market, right in front of the Atlantic Ocean .

On our last visit to Rota, Javier Oliván, food and beverage manager of the hotel, invited us, through Pilar and Cristina from the local food blog Aprendiendo a Cocinar , along with other food bloggers, to try the new additions to the menu of Restaurante el Embarcadero.

food bloggers seating around a table at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota

These new dishes are all by resident chef José Miguel Nuño , who graduated from the prestigious hospitality school Taberna del Alarbadero in Seville .

With a strong presence of local produce and organic ingredients , the new highlights of Restaurante el Embarcadero that we got to try are the following:

Homemade foie-gras

As the chef explained to us, this is a special preparation of duck liver cooked at low temperature. They decided to serve it with jelly and accompanied by gingerbread and homemade toasts.

A plate with a portion of homemade foie gras

We found it specially interesting to try the foie-gras with the different types of bread it comes with. We loved the spiciness of the gingerbread and the smoothness of the foie grass. The icing on the cake for this combination of flavours came with the wine pairing that the restaurant chose for this dish. The semi-sweet white wine Tehigo from Bodegas el Gato.

Half cured tuna toast with creamy cheese and tomatoes marinated in olive oil

This was a vey interesting surprise. Cured tuna is very popular in Southern Spain but this half cured tuna was something totally new to us. We loved both its moist texture and delicate flavour.

The creamy goat’s cheese (from local cheese factory El Bucarito) and the tomatoes marinated in extra virgin olive oil went great with the tuna and the crunchy bread. This was a winner of a starter that we paired with Tehigo dry white wine from Bodegas el Gato.

a plate with a toast of half cured on top

Croaker fish ceviche with red onion, citrus zest and tiger’s milk with a touch of oloroso sherry.

The fish and the tiger’s milk came apart at first. Then the chef poured the tiger’s milk onto the thinly sliced raw fish. We enjoyed seeing this preparation and the different bites we took at different times, thus noticing the evolution of the fish flavour and texture in contact with the tiger’s milk . From almost raw and fishy to cured and citrusy. Fun!. We paired this with Tehigo dry white wine too.

A plate of Ceviche at restaurante el Embarcadero in Rota, Spain

Stewed meat gyozas with hummus.

This was another fun and tasty surprise. Stews are common in Spain, specially in the winter months. The ingredients and the way they are cooked gives them a very distinctive flavour that we associate with specific presentations, but definitely not with gyozas.

A plate of gyozas at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota, Spain

Eating gyozas that tasted exactly like a spoonful of a typical Spanish stew was something very original.

Prawns and squid with a free-range egg cooked at low temperature

This was a delicious combo . Fried small prawns and thin squid strips with a crispy texture, topped up with an egg cooked at low temperature. What a delicious combination!

A plate of fried prawns and squid strips with egg at Restaurante el Embarcadero, Rota Spain

It reminded us of fried whitebait with fried eggs, which is a common dish in our regional cuisine. However we have to admit that the flavour of the prawns and of the squid made up for a better version of the dish indeed.

Fresh cannelloni bolognese with red curry, ras el hanout and coconut milk bechamel

We believe a combination of spices and coconut milk is always a safe bet, so we were not expecting anything very new. However we found the bechamel preparation a clever and original way to use the coconut milk .

Then the cannelloni wrap made perfect sense to the dish, which combines different Mediterranean ingredients and one Asian one in a very well balanced fashion. We paired this dish with Petit Forlong, a great red wine from the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa María.

Tintilla wine ice cream and oloroso sherry ice cream with dried fruits sponge cake

We love ice cream and we love wine, so we knew this was going to be a winner of a dessert too and it was! The dish was presented with two scoops of two different wine ice creams. We very much enjoyed the different flavours of both, combining them and mixing them also with the sponge cake.

A plate of ice cream at restaurante el embarcadero in Rota, Spain

We also got to pair this dessert with a glass of sweet tintilla wine from Bodegas el Gato . This was not only fun but also delicious!

The concept behind this dessert was very interesting to us too: different wines from the same region together in a dessert, that was the icing on the cake to a great pairing menu!

Rota never fails to delight us. It is a gem of a town for many reasons. That’s why we love to bring our guests to Rota during our custom tours of Southern Spain.

A: Rota celebrates various cultural events throughout the year. The Feria de Primavera, held in April, is a lively fair featuring traditional music, dancing, and horse parades. The Semana Santa (Holy Week) processions showcase Rota’s religious devotion and are a significant cultural event in the town.

Spain is one of my favourite places to visit. The weather, the food, people and way of life make it a great place to visit.

Flying Space-A to Rota, Spain: 8 Things You Need to Know

fly Space-A to the Rota, Spain naval base to find delicious paella and beautiful beaches.

Sunshine, beautiful beaches, delicious food, and convenient access to cities all over southern Spain – that’s what you’ll find when you fly Space-A to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota. It’s the only U.S Navy base in Spain and one of the easiest U.S. bases in Europe to reach from the continental U.S. Add Rota to your short list for your next Space-A adventure!

To help you plan your trip, here are eight things to know about flying Space-A to Rota.

Important Note: Space-A to Rota is restricted until further notice. NAVSTA Rota is no longer an official Spanish government port of entry. The only passengers who can fly Space-A into Rota are:

  • Passengers stationed in a Schengen country
  • Passengers holding Spanish passport or residency card
  • Passengers with a Schengen country stamp in their passport (obtained when arriving in a Schengen country via an official port of entry)

If you are not familiar with the Schengen Area, read this article from Department of State .

For passengers who are not in one of the first two categories above, I suggest flying Space-A into another European base, such as Ramstein or Naples, that has immigration staff available to stamp your passport.

From there, you can fly Space-A to Rota or use one of Europe’s many low-cost airlines to fly commercial to Jerez or Seville (the two closest airports to Rota). Items 2 through 8 in the article below are still applicable for visitors to Rota who do not arrive on a Space-A flight.

This policy change does not affect flying Space-A from Rota to other destinations around the world as long as you received a stamp on your passport from an official port of entry into Europe.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will update this article with more information when it becomes available. Contact the Rota passenger terminal with any questions about your specific situation.

If you are new to Space-A flying, read this Quickstart Guide to Space-A Flights  first to get a basic understanding of how the process works.

1. The most frequent flights to Rota are from the East Coast and other bases in Europe.

Rota is on the Patriot Express route originating at Naval Station Norfolk. Norfolk also has frequent missions to Rota on cargo aircraft. Other bases with regular flights are Joint Base Charleston , Dover AFB, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst .

Wright-Patterson AFB also has occasional flights, but their passenger terminal does not post flight schedules online . You can call their Space-A hotline at 937-257-6235 for flight information.

You can also fly Space-A to Rota via other bases in Europe. NAS Naples, NAS Sigonella , and NAS Souda Bay have flights to Rota most frequently.

When flying Space-A from Rota, you will see regular missions to the locations above as well as to Bangor ANG (Maine); JB Lewis-McChord ; Travis AFB ; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Ramstein AB .

Keep in mind that these are only the most frequent flights to and from Rota based on historical data. All Space-A flights are determined by mission needs, which change constantly.

Visit the  Rota passenger terminal’s web page  to see their current flight schedules.

2. You need a stamp on your leave orders or a pass to get back on Rota Naval Base.

Passes and stamps are issued at the office outside the Rota gate. The office is staffed by members of the Spanish Navy (Rota Naval Base is a Spanish base). It’s open 24 hours with 30-minute lunch breaks at 0200, 1400, and 2000.

If you are active duty on leave, you must have your orders stamped “BNR-SOLO ACCESO/ACCESS ONLY” with an expiration date. Your orders serve as authorization for you and any dependents traveling with you to enter the base.

Retirees and unaccompanied dependents need a pass to get back on the base after the first time you exit. Once you have the pass, you can enter the base by simply showing your ID and pass to the gate guard.

While your pass is valid (up to 2 weeks at the time of this writing), you do not need to stop at the office each time you enter. After your pass expires, you can repeat the process again and get a new one.

Make sure you have your military ID and passport (with valid Schengen stamp from an official port of entr y), because you need both to get the base pass.

If you have a rental car, you need a separate vehicle pass, which the guard station will issue for the same period of time as your stamped orders or base pass. You must show your rental agreement to get the vehicle pass.

3. Rota has two base lodging facilities.

Navy Gateway Inns & Suites (NGIS) is slightly closer to the air terminal. It’s a 15-minute walk (or a short taxi ride). From NGIS to the Rota gate is also about 15 minutes on foot. Navy Lodge is 5 to 10 minutes farther.

Contact the facilities directly for current rates.

4. The best deals on lodging may be off base.

There are many very nice, reasonably-priced hotels near Naval Station Rota. Outside of the summer months, when Rota is a popular destination for Spanish tourists, local hotels are often cheaper than base lodging. Three of our favorites are:

Hotel Duque de Nájera : This is the top hotel in Rota. It’s in the perfect location next to the beach, across from the ferry terminal, steps from Rota’s historic center, and only a mile from the base. If you travel to Rota during the off season, you may find rooms at this 4-star hotel for well under $100/night. Check rates for your dates !

( Click here to read a review of our stay at Hotel Duque de Nájera!)

Hostal Sixto : A charming guesthouse run by an Italian family, Hostal Sixto is also in a great location in Rota’s historic center and very close to the base. It’s beautifully decorated and has a very cozy European feel. While you’re there, enjoy a few home-cooked Italian meals in their restaurant, Ristorante Italiano Tuscania. Click here to reserve your room .

Hostal Playa Hidalgo : This clean, simple guesthouse is only steps from Rota’s best beach and a short walk to downtown Rota. It’s a great value, and it was the perfect place to stay the night before our hop back to the U.S. Click here to book your room .

Note that Rota Naval Base has two main gates: the Rota gate, which leads to downtown Rota, and the Puerto gate, which leads to El Puerto de Santa Maria (“Puerto”). Most base facilities that you are likely to use are located near the Rota gate, which is also within a few blocks of many bars, restaurants, stores, and the beach in Rota .

The Puerto gate is a bit farther, so while you can certainly book accommodations in Puerto, know that you will need a car to access the base.

5. The Agreement on Defense Cooperation (ADC) between the U.S. and Spain limits use of certain base facilities at Naval Station Rota.

If you are not active duty stationed in Spain (or a civilian working on base), you cannot shop at the Exchange or Commissary. Fortunately, there is a much longer list of facilities and services that Space-A travelers can use.

You can use the NEXMart, which is large and has many grocery items. You can also use the other services in the mall, including the food court, souvenir area, and phone shop, and you can dine at any of the eateries on base.

The base dining facility, the Gateway Galley, is open to all ID-card holders for brunch (0930 – 1330) on the first Sunday of the month and for special holiday meals.

You have access to the fitness center, the movie theater and drive-in, the 18-hole championship golf course, and other MWR services, such as Outdoor Recreation and Tickets & Travel . If you are thinking of going to Córdoba, Granada, or other cities in Spain, check out their tours; they may have something that fits the bill.

6. You Can Eat at the Spanish Navy’s dining facility.

The Spanish Navy’s cafeteria is available for use by all U.S. military ID card holders. It’s located in Building 2061, and lunch is served from 1230 to 1500. Get there before 1330 to beat the rush, as the Spanish generally eat lunch later than Americans.

The menu is written on a small chalkboard, and you place your order at the bar. The staff bring the food to your table.

The menu of the day is less than €10 and includes two large plates of food (you choose among a few options for your first and second courses) plus a drink, bread, and dessert or coffee. You can also order tapas à la carte instead of the full meal.

The full menu is a LOT of food, and we found that one daily menu plus one tapa was good for two of us to share.

7. You can rent a car at the Rota passenger terminal, but it’s cheaper off base.

The NEX rental car counter at the passenger terminal will rent to Space-A travelers. Having an on-base rental is convenient if you plan to return your car right before flying out of Rota, but you can find much better deals off base.

If you’re looking for really cheap rental cars, Rota is not the best place to find deals. We’ve found the best rates near the Seville airport or train station ( DoYouSpain is our go-to site for rental cars). Traveling to one of those locations is well worth the trip if you plan to keep the car for at least several days to explore the region.

You should have an International Drivers’ Permit (IDP) if you plan to drive in Spain. Rental agencies may not ask for it, but it’s required by law, so you will need it if you are stopped for any reason.

IDPs cost $20, and all you need are a valid U.S. driver’s license and two passport-size photos. You must get your IDP in the U.S., and there are only two places authorized by Department of State to issue it:

  • American Automobile Association (AAA) : Get an IDP at any AAA location or by mail.
  • American Automobile Tour Alliance (AATA) : The only way to get an IDP is by mail.

9. You can easily take public transportation for local, regional, or international travel.

The bus station is right outside the Rota gate. Buses go to several different locations in the region, including Puerto, Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, and Seville. This website has timetables for all of the bus lines that service Rota (enter “Rota” as the municipality and “bus” as the mode of transport).

A trip to the old city of Cádiz is a must when you visit Rota, and the nicest way to get there is by ferry, which takes about 30 minutes. The ferry terminal is approximately a 20 minute walk or 5 minute taxi from the Rota gate. You can find the timetable here .

Keep in mind that the ferry will not run if the weather is bad or the ocean is too choppy. On those days, the city operates a bus in lieu of the ferry. The bus takes a bit longer than the ferry but is equally convenient, as it travels directly between the two ferry terminals.

The closest train station to NAVSTA Rota is in Puerto. It’s along the Cádiz to Madrid train route that also has stops in Jerez de la Frontera, Seville, and Córdoba. A taxi between the base and the Puerto train station costs about €30.

For everything you need to know about Spanish trains, check out this guide to train travel in Spain .

Jerez de la Frontera airport (XRY) is about 24 miles from the base and is the closest airport to Rota. Sevilla airport (SVQ) is about 80 miles.

Jerez is smaller, but both airports have international flights, and their respective websites have good information in English about ground transportation to and from the airports.

Ready to Go to Spain?

Now that you have the intel you need, it’s time to plan your trip! Start tracking Rota flights from all of the bases mentioned in #1 above. Use this guide to help you read the Space-A flight schedules online.

Prior to travel, make sure you have all of the required documentation as well as the right clothing and gear for a Space-A flight. It’s all on this list .

Then, get ready for beautiful weather, delicious Spanish tapas, and the best beaches you’ve ever seen!

Rota

Located to the north of Cadiz Bay , the village is a mixture of flat land and coast, where the highlights are its long beaches and dune formations, not forgetting the fishing enclosures, specially prepared for a traditional method of fishing which is typical of this area.

Though probably of Phoenician origin, Rota did not acquire village status until the time of the Moslem occupation and subsequent Christian reconquest. Places of interest here are Luna Castle , Nuestra Señora de la O Church and San Juan Bautista Chapel.

Rota's origins appear to be Tartessian, later becoming the Phoenician town of "Astaroth', meaning border fort. During the Roman occupation there must have been a pottery here to produce the amphoras (narrow-necked jars) which were used to transport salted meat and fish from Cadiz.

In Moslem times, a ribat or monastery called Robota Ruta was built, around which the town began to grow.

Conquered by the Christians in 1264, it was ceded (1295) by Sancho IV to Alonso Perez de Guzman, nicknamed "the Good', the mayor of Tarifa, in recognition of his military feats. It soon came under the control of the House of Arcos. This dependence continued until the first half of the 19th century, when the aristocratic régime was dissolved in Spain.

In 1702 it was pillaged by Anglo-Dutch forces who destroyed many of the town's monuments. It suffered the same fate in 1811, this time at the hands of French troops.

Since 1953, the town has played host to an airbase, used jointly by the United States and Spain.
