Is Paris in December Busy? Crowds Forecast

Is December a good time to visit Paris? Years ago, Paris in early December was usually quiet. However, since most of the Paris Christmas markets decided to open their doors around the end of November, Paris in December is all time jam-packed with people, especially on the weekends.

The beginning of the month is still considered the low season in Paris, with better prices in transportation and accommodation, whilst Christmas week in Paris is the high season. However, we recommend booking everything well in advance if you want to visit Paris in December.

To optimize your time and avoid the longest lines, we recommend visiting temporary exhibitions during office hours when the locals are behind their desks. Book your tickets to temporary exhibitions well in advance.

Same advice for your Christmas shopping and the Christmas Markets in Paris: prioritize these activities for office hours and do more touristy things – less sexy for Parisians – on the weekends.

Below we list the main Paris attractions you will need advance tickets for and have added links to our favorite trusty providers for your convenience.

  • The Eiffel Tower
  • The Louvre Museum
  • Versailles Palace
  • Orsay Museum
  • The Catacombs of Paris

December in Paris is also the month for the year-end meetings in bars and restaurants with coworkers, friends, and family. On weekdays (especially Thursdays), bars and restaurants are busy with business meetings whilst the weekends are dedicated to friends and family.

If you have a specific place in mind for lunch or dinner for your Paris December trip, book well in advance.

Paris Weather in December

Paris in the Winter

How is the weather in Paris in December? December is a winter month in the Northern Hemisphere and the Paris weather in December is cold.

If we stick to the statistics, the average temperature in Paris in December is 10C maximum and 5C minimum, with a 15% probability of rainfall.

Does it snow in December in Paris? If a white Christmas is what you are looking for, then Paris won’t fulfill your wish. Snow in Paris in December is rare, with an average of 1.8 snowfall days. And if it does fall, it melts in a matter of minutes, thanks to the city’s “high” temperatures. What you are likely to experience, however, is cloudy days and regular rainfall.

The Paris weather in December is not ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. If you decide to visit Paris in December, it is always good to have a B plan if it rains.

What to Wear in Paris in December 2023

Paris Packing List Fall Winter

What to wear in Paris in December? The key to dressing in Paris in the winter is a good, warm coat. Still, it is a good idea to dress in layers because in some places indoors (e.g., inside the Louvre!!) it is too warm and you are likely to be OK with a light sweater.

What to pack for Paris in December 2023? The weather in Paris in December calls for good walking shoes, warm socks, scarves, a good warm jacket, and a foldable umbrella. Here’s the ultimate guide to packing for Paris in December  with clothes to be comfortable and stylish. Best Tips for Visiting Paris in December 2023

Even if France is a secular Republic, all the Paris offices are closed during the Christmas week. That’s when the Parisians, independent of their religion, travel to their hometowns to spend some time with their families. If you have planned to visit other cities than Paris, book your train tickets well in advance .

If you are interested in visiting Alsace’s Christmas markets , book your train tickets and accommodation right now . Usually, you can buy train tickets up to 6 months in advance. Strasbourg , Colmar , and all the Alsatian villages are easy and popular Paris getaways among tourists visiting Paris in December.

24th December (Christmas Eve) is when families gather for a pre-Christmas dinner and when many people go to midnight mass. On the 24th of December, shops and tourist attractions usually close earlier. Expect restaurants and night attractions like the Parisian Cabarets to have special programs and menus, and they may require advance booking.

25th December (Christmas Day) is traditionally a day spent at home with the family. Paris looks pretty dead, and some attractions are closed or have different opening times. When planning a trip to Paris at Christmas time, double-check your favorite tourist attractions’ opening times.

31st December (New Year’s Eve) is usually a normal working day for most of the Paris tourist attractions and shops, but perhaps some of them close earlier. Expect restaurants and night attractions like the Parisian Cabarets to have special programs and menus, and they may require booking.

Always have a B plan for rainy days in Paris. If you need some ideas, check out our list of fun things to do during a rainy day in Paris .

Galerie Vivienne Paris

When Paris’ air gets cold and crisp, it is the perfect time to explore Paris’ most beautiful covered passages.

These covered walkways, all bathed in natural light, are Art Nouveau /Neoclassical architectural gems built in the 18th century, the kind of place to see and to be seen whilst doing some shopping or drinking at a café.

Most of the best passages in Paris are in Paris’ central districts, in Paris 1 or 2 ( click here for our quick guide to the Covered Passages ). If you know where to look, you will find delightful vintage boutiques, cute cafés, and other curiosity shops perfect for unique Christmas gifts.

Visiting the churches of Paris is always a good idea, especially in Paris in December, when they are beautifully decorated for the Christmas celebrations.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame is still closed to the public for restoration works. EXPLORE THE SQUARES OF PARIS

Paris Christmas Lights and Decorations

Paris is home to beautiful and elegant squares, great for a stroll and a coffee or some shopping. The squares of Paris in December are something not to miss, all beautifully illuminated and decorated for the festive season.

The royal squares of Paris (Place Vendôme, Place des Vosges …) are must-sites in the city, but we recommend going out of the beaten path for a taste of local life.

FIND YOUR FAVORITE PARISIAN CAFÉ FOR A HOT CHOCOLATE OR VIN-CHAUD

Vin chaud Paris Christmas

The picturesque Parisian cafés are always a good place for a break during the cold days of December in Paris.

The neighborhoods of Le Marais , Montmartre , and Saint-Germain-des-Prés are some good places to find picturesque cafés, but there are pretty cafés in all the districts of Paris.

Order a steaming cup of hot chocolate and cozy up with a good book, or – for a more festive afternoon –, enjoy a glass of vin chaud (mulled wine) with your tribe.

Vaux-le-Vicomte-Julien-Lauren

The French castles are always great to visit, but they are stunning with the Christmas decorations inside the magnificent halls and gardens.

The Festival of Lights at Jardin des Plantes is the most famous, but there are many other beautiful light routes and festivals in Paris and its region .

Jardin des Plantes’ Festival of Lights  ( Festival des Lumières  in French) will take place from 22 November 2023 to 21 January 2024 at the Jardin des Plantes in the 5th Arrondissement of Paris. Visiting Paris in December: What to See & How to Plan Your Trip?

Last Updated on December 18, 2023

Visiting Paris and December can be enchanting, especially amid festive holiday decorations and displays. Rachel Naismith/All rights reserved

Are you considering visiting Paris in December? Most think of the end-of-year holiday festivities and displays as the primary draw card– and they’re certainly not wrong. But there’s much more to see and do beyond the usual fare.

It’s not all about Christmas markets, holiday window displays and noisy New Year’s festivities (although these are certainly not activities you should overlook, as I detail further down). Beyond this busier side to the year-end in the French capital, there lies a juicy opportunity for peace and contemplation.

The Buttes-Chaumont park is sublime year-round, but I prefer it in the winter.

The French have an expression for the sort of quiet luxury and indulgence I associate with the city in its wintery guise: “ luxe, calme, et volupté .”  Translating roughly to “luxury, calm and delight”, the phrase shows up both in Charles Baudelaire’s poem “ L’invitation au Voyage ” and as the title of a 1904 painting by Henri Matisse .

Other enticing prospects: escaping the crowds to enjoy the whistling of wind through bare-leaved trees at Parc Monceau and the Tuileries (pictured above), or of spending a few hours taking in paintings, sculpture or photography at a small, under-appreciated Parisian museum or gallery — minus the summertime crowds, hopefully.

Paris in December: exciting but contemplative.

If you’re looking for a little of that ineffable but decidedly French trifecta, read on for a little inspiration, followed by a few more direct suggestions on what’s worth seeing and doing at year-end.

Do keep in mind, however, that these are subjective notes and not meant as comprehensive advice on everything going on at this time of year. See the Paris Tourist Office page for that sort of general overview.

December Weather in Paris (& Packing Tips)

paris trips december 2023

In December, it’s generally brisk and cold, although in recent years there have been unusual warm spells or periods during which temperatures reach seasonal maximums over several days. I generally recommend that you pack plenty of warm sweaters, a waterproof coat, hat and shoes, gloves, scarves and warm socks. In case of an especially warm day, layering is always a good idea.

Minimum Temperature: 3 degrees C/37.4 degrees F Maximum Temperature: 8 degrees C/46.4 degrees F Average temp: 5 degrees C/41 degrees F Average monthly precipitation:  1.9 inches

Also take note that snow sticking to the ground longer than a few minutes is rather rare in Paris: when precipitation does come, you’re more likely to be regaled with icy rain or sleet.

The idyllic images of a snow-blanketed Paris end up being a pretty rare experience, unfortunately, so don’t expect a white December during your stay. Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to get your fix when you’re after traditional seasonal cheer, as I detail below.

The Best Things to See & Do in December

As I mentioned earlier, one of the things about year-end in Paris that I find so appealing is the sense of peaceful contemplation and deep quiet that seems to hover over the city. Part of the reason for this is that, especially outside of touristy areas, the streets can be remarkably empty.

Parisians are famously averse to the slightest icy wind, which means many people tend to huddle inside at home or in the city’s innumerable cafes, cinemas and galleries.

In fact, a common French superstition is that any cold “courant d’air” (draft) may lead you to catch your death, or at the very least a terrible bout of rhinopharangite (the common cold– doesn’t it sound eons more dramatic in French?) or angine (a vague throat infection or even a simple sore throat).

If you assumed that Parisians mummified their neck areas in thick scarves to look chic (which they often do, of course), their enthusiasm for wrapping up is more likely driven by rampant cultural hypochondria; by the local conviction that protecting one’s neck area from the cold will stave off most illnesses.

A typical cafe in Paris, France

It’s a belief I have a hard time shaking off myself: cold air touching a bare spot on my neck now instinctively prompts me to “protect it” from the mysterious and malign forces of chilled wind.

But I digress. My long prelude was meant to underline two things:  one, there’s something quietly enchanting about exploring the city when an aura of rest and dormancy has fallen over it; and two, there are plenty of cozy ways to enjoy being indoors (but don’t expect much solitude there). Here are few of my favorite ways to do both:

1. Warm up over gourmet tea or hot chocolate.

paris trips december 2023

If you’ve made the rounds of Parisian cafes and are looking for something a bit different, an old-world tearoom can be a wonderful way to duck in somewhere to warm up, read or just relax.

I especially recommend the Mariages Frères tearoom in the Marais district : choose from hundreds of variety of gourmet French teas, from black to white and green. Their afternoon savoury and sweet tea menus, pastries and cakes are also delicious (30 rue du Bourg-Tibourg, 4th arrondissement; metro: St-Paul.)

Read related: My Favorite Spots for Afternoon Tea in Paris

paris trips december 2023

The Viennese-style tearoom Angelina  is a favorite for rich, thick hot chocolate, meanwhile (226 rue de Rivoli, 1st arrondissement; Metro: Louvre-Rivoli).

My own preferred spot for hot chocolate in the capital, Jean-Paul Hévin , is (sadly) not currently open: the master chocolatier closed his upstairs tearoom when real estate prices became unaffordable on the swank Rue St-Honoré.

But according to a staff member I spoke to recently at the new shop at the same location, there are plans in the works for a new tearoom to open sometime in the future– meaning Hévin’s divine chocolat chaud, infused with ginger, raspberries, chili and other inventive flavors, may soon be calling my name again. Here’s to hoping…

See my longer list (at TripSavvy) of places for good hot chocolate in Paris here , and our guide to some of the best places for gourmet coffee in the capital, here.

2. Go soak up some art.

Visitors take in an enormous installation at Paris' Modern Art Museum.

I’m not promising that museums and galleries will be empty, but they’re still likely to be less crowded at this time of year than during peak season. Take a few hours to contemplate artistic masterpieces at one of the city’s superb permanent collections.

My favorites include the astounding, and constantly refreshed, permanent collection at the Centre Georges Pompidou’s Museum of Modern Art:  with masterpieces from the likes of Matisse, Derain, Kandinsky, Warhol, Man Ray, Niki de Sainte Phalle and countless others, getting bored here is out of the question.

I also recommend the entirely free collection at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris,  the sumptuous medieval tapestries at the Musee Cluny,  and the Orangerie , where Monet’s magnifient Nympheas series    (water lilies) plunges you into the artist’s astounding mastery of color and light, never failing to offer a moment of peace and contemplation. The Monet room at the Oragerie is also free for all.

Buy tickets and priority entrance passes to the Centre Pompidou (via Tiqets.com)

For ideas on small and independent galleries to duck into from the cold, see my feature on small museums in the French capital, and this piece on some of the best free collections in Paris.

Also check out my longer piece on the capital’s best modern art collections.

3. Take a wintery walk.

Jardin des Tuileries in Paris during the winter

As long as it doesn’t get too cold, I’m a big fan of wintery strolls. I enjoy bundling up and feeling the slight, invigorating sting of wintery wind on my face (but never the neck! Beware the dreaded  courant d’air !) and strolling through lanes of bare trees, or watching the ducks and geese as they float around aimlessly on the steely grey ponds.

I especially recommend the massive parks known as “Paris’ lungs” just east and west of the city limits (The Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes ): both easily accessible by metro, these enormous green spaces offer miles of walking trails, large ponds for admiring the waterfowl, and dozens of varieties of trees.

The Palais Royal  has a traditional coziness about it, with its elegant arcades, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. This is the height of Parisian wintery elegance– plus, it’s a great place to search for holiday gifts from France that are neither cliche nor tacky.

{Related: How to avoid tourist traps and scams in Paris?}

I also love the Romantic-style Parc du Buttes-Chaumont ( pictured above ) , with its artificial grottoes, panoramic viewpoints and impressive variety of beautiful trees, as well as abundant birds. Recently I and a friend witnessed a colony of green parrots inhabiting some of the trees there: a strange sighting, to say the least!

Annual Events Worth Seeing, & Noteworthy Exhibits in 2023

For many, the biggest draw cards of a December getaway to Paris are the holiday festivities, markets and decorations– and I certainly can’t deny their appeal! You can see all our suggestions for feting the season in our complete guide to Christmas and winter holidays in Paris.

paris trips december 2023

Christmas markets in Paris generally open in late November and run through Christmas Day or, rarely, through early January. For a complete list of markets open in 2023 ,see more here.

While some may find them a touch kitschy– and can’t that be fun, anyway?–  the warm Alsatian-style lodges in wood are something I look forward to every year.

Walking through the stalls, you may or may not be tempted to stock up on decorations, toys and other items of admittedly varying quality, but a good glug of spiced mulled wine down the gullet and a crepe warming your hand isn’t likely to make your mood any worse .

Related: Where to Taste Paris’ Most Delicious Crepes & Galettes

Among my favorites  include the annual market at St-Germain-des-Prés (generally a bit quieter than some of the others) and the Alsace-themed market at Gare de L’est (the Franco-German region where the traditional marché de noel has its origins.

Meanwhile, holiday lights and shop window displays attract tourists in significant numbers every year. Streets I find especially beautiful when illuminated for the season include Place Vendome, Rue St Honoré, and Rue Montorgueil .

{Find a Holiday-Themed Tour or Paris Experience with Viator}

Naturally, many will want to flock to the grands magasins (traditional department stores) to see their always festive and colorful holiday windows and lights. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, both at Metro Havre Caumartin, are seasonal favorites, and perfect for a family excursion.

A young admirer checks out a Christmas window display at Galeries Lafayette in Paris, 2018.

At Galeries Lafayette and the adjoining Printemps store on Boulevard Haussmann , the window displays in 2023-2024 run through early January. The festive holiday window scenes are once again complemented by an enormous and opulent Christmas tree jutting up through the old glass cupola in the main hall. It was unveiled in mid-November.

The 2023 Christmas tree (sapin de Noël) at Galeries Lafayette in Paris/Photo by Rachel Naismith - All rights reserved

As much as I try to resist it, I can’t help but find it beautiful, especially set against the fine details of the hall’s Belle-Epoque architecture. Parisians know how to do a grandiose holiday season better than anyone, it would seem.

Finally, ice skating rinks are also a fun way to spend the day, particularly with kids; see a list of rinks open this year here .

New Year’s Eve in the French capital can be a rowdy and remarkably overcrowded affair, especially in areas around the Champs-Elysées and the Sacre Coeur.

Of course, especially if you’re a first-time visitor to Paris and want to see some of its most iconic attractions in their holiday guise, you may decide the crowded conditions are worth it.

New Years on the Champs-Elysées, Paris

My favorite, and far more relaxed, way to spend the occasion in Paris is to pick up a bottle of champagne or the less expensive but equally excellent Crémant de Loire or Crémant de Bourgogne  and find a suitable place to celebrate: even a quick toast by the banks of the Seine can be very pleasant, albeit chilly!

Alternatively, enjoy casual drinks at a bar or wine bar : many do stay open on the 31st, as owners know the night is a popular one for eating and drinking into the wee hours.

This much-awaited retrospective at the intimate Musée de l’Orangerie near the Tuileries gardens considers the monumental oeuvre of Expressionist painter Amedeo Modigliani, and probes his lifelong ties with the art dealer and gallery owner Paul Guillaume.

Modigliani– who is perhaps most famous for his abstract portraits that draw inspiration from traditional African sculpture, was a prolific artist whose work spans several mediums, from paintings to sculptures and drawings. The show at the Orangerie, running through early January, takes an intriguing look at how Paul Guillaume nurtured Modigliani’s talent and helped catapult him to worldwide fame.

How’s the weather in Paris at Christmas?

The bad news first: If you are hoping for white Christmas in Paris, it is probably not going to happen. December is not a very cold month in Paris, but rather a wet one.

December usually sees the highest precipitation of the year, with temperatures ranging between 4° C ( 39 °F) and 8° C (46 °F) , and dropping below zero during the night.

But the good news is, that even if you’ll have showers in December, it rarely rains in Paris for an entire day. Furthermore, Paris has so many indoor activities, that you’ll hardly notice the weather anyway. Just prepare for changing weather and dress in layers, and the weather won’t be an issue.

How to dress & what to pack for Paris during Christmas?

The greatest challenge when packing for Paris in December is to anticipate changing temperatures and rain. While it might be pretty chilly outside, indoors it is often quite hot, overheated even. Hence, the best is you are prepared to dress in layers and carry some simple rain gear with you.

Tip: I always carry a little tote bag in my purse, so I can easily store my hat, scarf, and jacket when spending a little more time in stores or museums.

Stay Dry during Christmas Time in Paris

#1 Waterproof Shoes

December is the month with the most rainfall AND as well one of the coldest, so keeping your feet dry and warm is a must! Your best and most versatile option is a pair of waterproof Chelsea boots . They look not only great, but they also keep your feet warm and dry.

Plus, you can easily dress them up and down, and the sturdy sole gives grip on the slippery cobblestones. If you stay in Paris, you don’t need heavy-lined winter boots, it’s enough if they stay dry, and you wear warm socks.

For more winter shoe ideas, also take a look at my guide about the best travel shoes for Paris.

#2 Small Travel Umbrella

Honestly, you shouldn’t travel anywhere in Europe without a little umbrella in your

purse. This one is just the perfect size to do both: fit in your purse and keep you dry. It also comes with a little pouch, so you are not flooding your purse when putting the umbrella back, wet after usage.

Stay warm in Paris in December

#3 Warm Merino Socks

The best way to keep your feet warm in Winter in Paris is by investing in a fine pair of quality Merino Socks . I know it hurts to spend so much on a pair of socks, but from my own (long-distance) hiking and ttravel experience, I can guarantee you that it absolutely pays off .

My favorites are these ones . You find as well more affordable Merino socks, but make sure to verify how much Merino wool they actually have. The less Merino, the cheaper – and the less good.

#4 A Cute Hat

I know that a beret might sound like a cliché from Emily in Paris , but in fact it is not. Many French women wear it in Paris, it is normal everyday clothing and nothing that would make you stick out. Especially not if you wear a high-quality beret like this one.

It’s High Season: Book your Attraction Tickets in Advance

I know, it kills a bit the spontaneous, easy-going holiday vibe you are certainly keen on, but I can’t stress this out enough: Buy your tickets in advance! Christmastime is high-season in Paris, and many sights will be sold-out quick .

Hence, I strongly recommend reserving your entrance tickets well in advance. Even if some sights have some leftover tickets, the queues are huge, and you’ll spend precious time waiting in lines.

Below, you find the sights that you absolutely need to book before you arrive in Paris . For your convenience, I added links to my most trusted ticket provider:

  • The Eiffel Tower – click here for tickets to the summit!
  • The Louvre – Click here to see the Mona Lisa
  • The Catacombs  – click here to enter Paris’ underground
  • The Castle of Versailles – book your ticket here

You can also purchase tickets directly on the sights homepages. However, the downside is that they usually don’t have a cancellation policy. While reserving your Paris tickets with get your guide grants you a 24h cancellation and refund policy.

Paris in December

Paris in December is especially magical photo Denis Doukhan / Pixabay

Paris in December 2023 – is it worth visiting? Weather, what to wear, hotels and tours prices. What to do in Paris in the beginning of December and at Christmas, where to go outside the city – found out good Time for Trip.

When it comes to traveling around Europe, few people consider December as the right time for this. Is that its very edge – the Eve and Christmas itself.

It used to be so… Today, the situation has changed totally! The desire to wander away from the crowd and save on hotels and excursions forces tourists to consider, among other things, previously unpopular periods . Especially when it comes to the most interesting cities in Europe.

However, if the desire to celebrate Christmas and even meet in Paris New Year doesn’t require explanation, then the intention to visit the French capital in early December is puzzling. Easy, of course, – today people are so accustomed to inadequate actions that the very border between normal and abnormal has blurred.

“What can be good there when nature itself is crying” – an experienced traveler will ask in puzzlement? However, perhaps he will answer to himself – at least mass of the tourists will try not to come.

And therefore, December in Paris is good because the Louvre Museum and other big attraction of the French capital will be able to visit not in the crowd. Also, it will be possible to walk around the Marais district and Île de la Cité, Latin Quarter without noisy tour groups, loudly discussing something in an incomprehensible language.

Or just sit alone on the bank of the Seine, fixing your undisturbed mental gaze in the days of kings and musketeers. Maybe even further – who knows what kind of knowledge baggage you have?

But first things first. Let’s start with the not so pleasant for to end with what is remembered best.

  • 30 Plus Top Paris Sights with a Fun Guide
  • Eiffel Tower Guided Climb Tour by Stairs
  • Paris Off the Beaten Track Guided Bike Tour

Weather in Paris in December

It’s actually not as bad as the guidebooks make it out to be. Since the air temperature even at night almost never drops below 0 °C. During the day, the city atmosphere warms up to commendable +8-12 °C.

Note, that similar and even higher air temperatures are possible not only in early December in Paris. But even at its end – in 2022, on the Eve of the New Year, the guests of the French capital listened with surprise to the forecasts that promised almost spring warmth – up to +14-15 °C!

At the same time, it is almost always quite damp – according to statistics, December Paris is the most rainy month of the year. However, remember another European city that doesn’t have similar problems at the start of winter.

  • Yes, the same Venice in early December – if it doesn’t float, then bathes in mists!

Heavy rains – rare guests in Paris in the last month of the year of the winter. But long and indistinct ones – happen regularly!

Sometimes it’s snowing. The sun, however, also appears in the sky – not so often though!

According to statistics, during 25% of the days in December 2022, the streets of Paris saw the sun’s rays. Winds, however, permeate anyone who opted for a light jacket and neglected a down jacket or coat.

What to Bring With

A scarf is not just a tribute to fashion, but an important part of the wardrobe. Many will be happy with a hat on their heads (parents of the little kids – especially).

As the walks along the Parisian embankments at the end of the year require perseverance and the ability to endure the vagaries of nature. Not only a romantic warehouse of nature!

Again, you can buy some stylish accessory in France if you didn’t take the necessary item of clothing with you. Just for the memories of the trip…

  • Is It Worth to Celebrate New Year in Paris

In December in Paris it's snowing sometimes

There are almost no serious water rises in the Seine in December. But in January, Paris every year awaits with trepidation the repetition of the Great Flood of 1910.

And big floods do happen! Although, fortunately, not yet the scale of the national disaster.

What to Wear

The damp and dank weather that is a common backdrop for Paris in both early and late December requires adequate insulation. So that you can wander along the banks of the Seine or climb the top tier of the Eiffel Tower without fear of hypothermia.

The main thing is to stock up on water-repellent clothing and waterproof shoes. At the same time, it’s better not to take excessively warm jackets with you – lined windbreakers and raincoats in the company of sweaters are ideal.

In most cases, rubber boots will also come in handy. But if you arrive in the winter in Paris in boots with thick enough soles, you are also unlikely to regret it. The main thing is that they do not get wet!

Prices 2023

In described time the capital of France is not considered immensely popular. And this is understandable – there are not many people who want to go on a trip here just a couple of weeks before the New Year.

Therefore, by planning an independent trip to Paris in the first half of December, you get a chance to save money. Since airline tickets at this time cost minimal amounts . There will be no shortage of decent hotels at a reasonable price.

For example, the CMG-Magnifique appartement III Bastille Voltaire in the 11th arrondissement will host two travelers for less than 100 € per day. A great price for a studio with a separate kitchen where you can serve yourself an excellent French-style breakfast?!

Somewhat pricey, but it flaunts an excellent location in the Latin Quarter of the Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain . Which is also praised for the cleanliness of the rooms and comfortable beds.

Note that if you take care of booking 5-6 months before the trip, you will be able to find even a bit cheaper accommodation!

As for excursions, an hour-long boat trip along the Seine will cost only 16-18 € per person . From 27 € cost walking sightseeing tour of Paris, from 35 € – day ticket for hop-on hop-off bus.

Things to Do in Paris in December

About what top attractions of Paris you need to see first of all, we wrote in detail in the corresponding article . But if you have a little more time than the standard 3-4 days, then plan a much more interesting and varied program.

For example, visit not only the Louvre, but also some other interesting museums in Paris . Stand in line and climb the Eiffel Tower, and then appreciate the city’s vistas from the observation deck of the Maine-Montparnasse Tower.

See if Notre Dame is being restored after the fire and look into the royal Sainte-Chapelle. Walk through the famous Marais, then cross to the other side of the Seine and take a walk in the Latin Quarter.

December is the quietest time of the year in Paris

Breathe in the creative atmosphere that gave inspiration to many great quarters of Montmartre. And sit for a long time at the foot of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur, trying to see the outlines of the great city through the veil of December fog.

Of course, this is not all that could be done here in winter. For from Paris you can go not only to Versailles – the number of castles in the vicinity of the capital of France (both near and far) is quite large.

And you can visit, for example, the former estate of the Princes of Conde in Chantilly. And then the main royal hunting residence, the Palace of Fontainebleau. After all, in December they are open to visitors!

Where to Go

We recommend you extend your attention to and visit other interesting places in France . Some ow which can be easily reached from Paris by car or public transport.

So – take a day trip to Normandy and its beauty places . For example, pay a visit to the amazingly beautiful city of Rouen, whose cathedral incredibly impressed Claude Monet. And then go further – to Mont-Saint-Michel, one of the main attractions of France.

A rather captivating pastime option even in winter is a visit to the French castles in the Loire Valley. After all, such brilliant, famous residences as Chambord and Chenonceau are visited by very rare travelers at this time. And, therefore, you can enjoy the rare architectural beauty without being disturbed (almost) by anyone!

While in Paris you will have the choice between two activities. First, you can choose to visit the awe-inspiring Sacré-Coeur Basilica, the second highest point of the city after the Eiffel Tower, and enjoy free time to explore the area. Or, you can choose to Learn about the neighborhood’s famous artists and writers at the Musée de Montmartre, a historic 17th century house that gives you a glimpse into the artistic side of town

Prolong your stay in the French capital with a 2-night hosted post extension. Step back in time during a locally guided walking tour centered on the French Revolution, enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Paris as you please, indulge in the local cuisine during an included dinner at a local Brasserie and slide into the backseat of a vintage retro car to cruise along chic boulevards peering up at the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe from the car’s open roof.

  • Paris - Extension Begins
  • This morning, step back in time during a walking tour centered on the French Revolution. Your expert guide evokes the shadows of Marie Antoinette and Robespierre as you journey back to the tumultuous years of 1789-1799. Visit landmarks such as Place de la Bastille (where the infamous prison once stood) and Place de la Concorde where the revolutionary government erected a guillotine in the square (and where King Louis XVI was executed on 21 January 1793). The afternoon is yours to explore more of the French capital independently. Perhaps you’ll stroll through the Beaubourg neighborhood and take in the whimsical moving fountain of the Centre Pompidou for Contemporary Art. Dedicated to the former French President Georges Pompidou, this building represents the first major example of 'inside-out' architecture with its structural, mechanical and circulation systems exposed on the exterior of the building. Today this eclectic building synthetizes the blend of tradition and innovation that distinguishes Paris.
  • The day is yours to explore more of the French capital on your own. Perhaps you’ll wander over to the Left Bank of the Seine River and plunge into the bohemian atmosphere of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood and the Latin Quarter. Or visit one of the city’s iconic museums, such as the highly acclaimed Musée D’Orsay. The former railroad station now houses some of the world’s best impressionist art. This evening, celebrate the end of your extended stay in Paris with dinner in a local brasserie* before sliding into the backseat of a vintage retro car, cruising through the chic boulevards and peering up at the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe from the car’s open roof.
  • Paris - Depart for Home
  • Wish France adieu as you return home.

Live the Parisian life in style as you join your Tour Manager on a captivating excursion to the Opera District. Take advantage of an immersive experience with Parisian luxury and peruse famous name brand stores to embrace the glam of haute couture fashion. Pass by the stunning opera house of Palais Garnier before getting a glimpse into the history of perfume making at Fragonard Museum. Indulge your senses and scan the ancient artisan bottles, learning about the art of creating the perfect scent. A specialist will help you choose your own cologne, providing an irreplaceable souvenir from your Parisian getaway. Continue on to the famous Galeries Lafayette – a well-known French department store that features a mesmerizing stained glass dome. You might even be able to get a closer look at the dome on the glass skywalk, which reaches out directly below the center of the dome. Cap off the adventure with a trip to the rooftop to admire the city from above. With a drink in hand, marvel at the breathtaking views of the Opera House & Eiffel tower. Enjoy free time to explore the neighborhood and shop before heading back to the hotel by metro.

Join us for a spectacular evening in one of Paris’s most beloved institutions, the famous Paradis Latin. Situated in a building associated with Napoleon and rebuilt by Gustav Eiffel himself, the Paradis has been running here since 1889. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner with wine, then bring on the champagne and let the show commence!

Take a walk down to the Ile de la Cité to snap a picture of the façade of the awe-inspiring Notre Dame.

The 15 best things to do in Paris in December 2024

The 15 best things to do in Paris in December 2024

What to do in paris in december.

Sunlight may be in short supply, but there’s no end of joy to find in Paris in December. C’est Noël, joie sur la terre! The boulevards and avenues light up with decorations, Christmas markets pop up, and ice skating rinks energize public spaces. If that’s not enough, the month is capped by the exuberant parties for the Réveillon de Nouvel on New Year’s Eve.

It’s a fun time to visit the City of Light , especially if you can find time to do a few things from our pick of things to do in Paris in December.

The 15 best things to do in Paris in December

Admire magical christmas lights in paris.

Christmas market on the Champs Elysees in Paris at night

Christmas markets in Paris are cozy escapes from the urban grind. Inspired by the markets of Alsace, they bring warmth and merriment to grey public spaces.

Numerous small fairs are dotted around Paris, feeding cravings for warm wine and chi-chi (sugary churros.) But the Christmas market below Notre-Dame cathedral is particularly romantic. If you had to pick one, head there. The atmosphere is just right for festive fun.

There are plenty of other great Christmas markets. Here are our favorites:

  • La Défense esplanade , in the heart of the business district, is hugely popular.
  • Catherine de Medici’s Tuileries Garden hosts a more understated yet very picturesque market.
  • Saint Germain des Prés pulls out the stops with an entire Christmas village in the chic district.
  • Les Halles is an indoor market and perfect for rainy days.

Join the New Year’s Eve party on the Champs-Élysées

Paris, France - January 1st, 2023 : Crowd gathered on the Champs Elysées in Paris to celebrate the passing to 2023 with a fireworks show over the Arc de Triomphe (triumphal arch)

A chocolatey yule log is a tradition shared across the Atlantic. There are no half-measures with gâteaux in France , and many pâtisseries strive to create delectable artworks that look as good as they taste.

Different flavors can be found as pâtisseries flex their creative skills, with each pâtisserie offering its signature version. Popping into a pâtisserie or three to find flavors you like is part of the festive fun in Paris. Although, traditionalists need not worry: there will usually be a classic chocolate confection on sale too.

You can often buy single slices. But that can only lead to regret as you crave a second slice. And then a third. But the most compelling reason to buy the whole bûche is to have a mini work of delicious edible art for your own Parisian Christmas celebration.

Where? Pâtisseries all across Paris in the days leading up to Christmas Day.

Light up shopping trips by heading to stores with the best festive displays

Close up of woman`s hand holding shopping bags while walking on the street.

Most of the prettiest lumières de Noël are found in stores or major thoroughfares. But not all of them. The Christmas lights in Parc de Villette are impressive too.

The Villette lights add a festive ambiance to the green space by dressing trees and pathways around Canal de l’Ourcq with lights and lasers. Perfect for an evening stroll.

Get your ice skates on at fabulous settings around Paris

People ice skating on the ice rink in winter.

Okay. This last entry is conditional on it snowing in Paris, which is extremely rare. But it is possible in December, and if you happen to be there at the right time, you might want to join the snowy fun .

Aside from the gorgeous photos you’ll capture, you can get involved in snowball fights at parks across the city. But the inner child will probably want to go sledding. Do like the rest of Paris and head to Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the 19th.

Arguably the prettiest park in Paris , it is even more beautiful under a carpet of snow. There’s a lake, a suspension bridge, and an abundance of trees creating a magical winter wonderland effect. Most importantly, there are slopes steep enough for proper sledding.

The catch is that half the city will be there at the first hint of snow. But that creates a carnival atmosphere, making it one of the rarest and most unusual things to do in Paris in December .

Soak up the energy of cabaret for New Year

Das Moulin Rouge in Paris

Cabaret is an utterly Parisian experience that distills the magic of the Belle Époque into a vibrant and risqué spectacle . The dance and song spectacular is one of the most uplifting things to do in Paris in December , with the color and energy quickly banishing any festive blues.

If you’re unsure what to do for New Year’s Eve, a cabaret show might be the answer. Cheap seats need early booking , and tickets can easily top €100 at the most popular venues. But it’s a night to remember, and you’ll probably get out in time to join the midnight countdown celebrations . If there is any place to visit at the last day of the year, it has to be the Moulin Rouge – We can’t ignore the most famous Cabaret. The Red Windmills (and the art of Toulouse-Lautrec) did wonders to promote the red-light legend. Home to the original can-can dancers, it’s still a crowd-pleaser.

Head out to Saint-Cloud for a light-show spectacular

Enchanted Forest 2017 preview night

The Lumières en Seine is an annual tradition that fully merits the 30-40 minute train journey from the center of Paris. It is a next-level light spectacular that invites you to follow a 1.2-mile (2km) trail at night through artistic sculptures and inventive displays. The setting was already picturesque, but is richly enhanced with luminous wonders that are one of the festive highlights in Paris.

Take your kids to see Père Noël and deliver their wish list

You don’t need an excuse to sample the delectable pastries and desserts found all over Paris. But if you do, a Parisian Christmas is surely the best time to indulge.

There are top-class pâtisseries everywhere in Paris. But there’s an enticing concentration around the colorful market on Rue Montorgueil .

Rue Montorgueil is lined with purveyors of gourmet delights, including a couple of amazing pâtisseries. Grab a Bûche de Noël or a baba au rhum from the famous Stohrer before exploring the bustling marketplace. Tell yourself you deserve all the irresistible treats you’ll end up buying. It’s Christmas, after all!

Here, we answer the most frequently asked questions to prepare you perfectly for your trip to Paris in December!

Coming to Paris in December ? Live in Paris and wondering what to do in Paris in Winter ? Paris in December Weather

The weather in Paris tends to be on the cold and windy, ranging from 3° – 7° C (37.4° F to 44.6° F). Sometimes it rains and sometimes it even snows. (If you get a chance to see Paris in the snow, it is really magical and you will never forget it! More on this later.) December is a beautiful time to visit Paris and see it in all of its Christmas glory.

Paris in December temperatures

  • Minimum temperature:  37.4° F/ 3° C
  • Maximum temperature:  44.6° F/ 7° C
  • Average temperature:  39.2° F/ 4° C

What to pack for Paris in December

  • Soft, light weight sweaters – I love traveling with one to three lightweight cashmere sweaters. I wear these all the time here in Paris too. They are light and easy to travel with and add immediate warmth and class to any outfit.
  • Cozy accessories – bring a hat, scarf and gloves to keep you warm.
  • Warm boots – the weather will be chilly and you will be happiest if your feet are toasty warm as you go for long walks throughout Paris.
  • A sturdy umbrella – You may also want to bring a sturdy umbrella. When it rains here in Paris in Dcember, the wind tends to blow quite strongly. Or you could pick up a cute one once you’re here ( sur place !), at Monoprix.
  • A high quality camera – you’ll want to make sure your camera is good quality and can capture photos in low light situations. Paris is a bit dark and overcast in December during the day and you’ll want to take photos of the seasonal decorations at night too.

Pro tip : I always recommend that people pack light when they come to Paris and leave space in their suitcase, or even pack an extra (empty) bag, if possible to have room to bring home goodies from your travels. We tend to travel with a carry-on only when we travel and try to leave some room in the suitcase for whatever we decide to buy to bring home during our trip.

We have a few Christmas market traditions that we go back to year after year. We also visit the Parisian Christmas markets several times during the month of December and make sure we enjoy each of our traditions.

  • Stop by the Champagne bar – Make sure you visit the Champagne bar for a glass of bubbly.
  • Have a glass of mulled wine – as you walk around the market.
  • Eat a Norvegian salmon sandwich – the salmon is roasted in front of your eyes over a fire and then put into a salmon sandwich.
  • Try a saucisse aligot – a traditional French dish from the — region, featuring a sausage and mashed potatoes filled with — cheese from the Auvergne.

Go to a Museum

During the colder months of the year, we love going to museums. Paris has so many fantastic museums – big and small.

If you have already visited the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay go back (there is so much more to see!), or choose one of the gorgeous smaller museums in Paris.

If you are planning to go to several museums during your time in Paris, consider getting the Paris Museums Pass which provides access to 60 museums and monuments.

Step into the wonderful world of antique fairgrounds in Paris at the Musée des Arts Forain

Don’t miss the Musée des Arts Forains ! This treasure of a museum only opens for a handful of days each year. You can visit as part of a group or on your own. In 2023/2024, you can visit from December 27th, 2023 – January 7th 2024. Look at their website for more information.

Sitting in a Parisian cafe is the perfect activity any month of the year in my opinion. Paris has a fabulous coffee culture and you will love sitting in a cafe and people watching, chatting with your love or friends or reading a good book.

Go ice skating

Raise your hand if you love ice skating!

There are several places where you can ice skate in Paris during the month of December.

  • La Defense Christmas Market
  • Le Grand Palais
  • Le Champ-de-Mars Christmas Market
  • Jardin des Tuileries Christmas Market
  • AccorHotels Arena
  • Galeries Lafayette

Enjoy the Christmas decorations (don’t miss these if you visit Paris in December!)

I’m talking about street, cafe, restaurant and hotel decorations here. (More on window decorations later in this post.)

All of Paris is beautiful throughout December and the entire holiday season but there are a few places that have the best decorations, so you will want to make sure you visit those. It’s best to visit at night when everything is lit up.

Favorite places to see and enjoy Christmas decorations in Paris are the rue Faubourg Saint Honoré, the Champs Elysées and the Place de la Madeleine.

Visit a Christmas Crèche (A Christmas Nativity Scene)

Whether you are religious or not, it is beautiful to visit churches this time of year. In Paris, the majority of churches are Catholic and they host a Christmas crèche. Each church has their own crèche style.

Some of the best to visit are

  • Eglise de la Madeleine
  • Notre Dame de Paris (still closed for renovation after the terrible fire of 2019)
  • Saint Germain l’Auxerrois
  • Saint Sulpice
  • Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre (my favorite church in Paris)

Have hot chocolate and a Mont Blanc pastry at Angelina

We love Angelina at any time of the year, but it is especially magical in December. They are famous for their African hot chocolate so make sure you order a pitcher. It is absolutely one of the best hot chocolates in Paris .

Want to really go all out? Pair your Angelina hot chocolate with a Mont Blanc pastry.

What is a Mont Blanc pastry you ask? The perfect dessert in my opinion! A French meringue center, covered with French chantilly whipped cream and wrapped in copious amounts of chestnut cream. Divine!

If the line is just too long to wait which does happen, especially on the weekend, you can skip the line to the right and head inside to order hot chocolate and a Mont Blanc to take away. (Eat it in the Tuileries across the street.) If you are just getting hot chocolate, they sometimes even put a take away “à emporter” stand outside.

Go to see the giant Christmas tree at Galeries Lafayette

The Christmas tree at the Galeries Lafayette is giant and beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you are in Paris in December.

Admire the Christmas windows at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette

When I lived in the 8th arrondissement, down the street from Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, my nightly walk with our pups consisted of visiting the Christmas windows at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette all December long.

The windows are beautiful. The themes are different each year and I have a generally have a slight preference for the Printemps windows (they tend to be chicer whereas the Galeries Lafayette windows are a little kitschier), but this could change any year.

Visit early in the morning or late at night for fewer crowds.

Head to the Jardin des Plantes for a beautiful, animal-filled light show

Last year, we had the joy of attending the Espèces en Voie d’Illumination event in the Jardin des Plantes . This year the theme is the ocean with the beautiful Océan en Voie d’Illumination . We highly recommend going, it is stunning!

Walk through the snow in Montmartre (such a romantic activity if you happen to be here in Paris in December and it snows!)

Ok, for this one, I admit you are dependant on the weather, but I hope it snows while you’re here. Paris covered in snow is breathtaking. It doesn’t snow often, but when it does, it is absolutely gorgeous.

Two years ago, we had one magical day when Paris was covered in a blanket of snow. Hugo and I headed out early in the morning and spent the day walking through Montmartre, taking photos of the snow. Last year it snowed again and we were able to capture Palais Royal under the snow. So beautiful!

Go out for a festive meal

Paris has so many fabulous restaurants to choose from. If you will be in Paris in December and would like a lovely festive option, choose from our list below.

  • Le Grand Colbert – this restaurant has been a Parisian institution since it opened its doors in 1900. It was featured in the movie “Something’s Gotta Give” as well.
  • Le Train Bleu – this stunning Belle Epoque restaurant in the Gare de Lyon train station dates all the way back to 1901. They offer several different menus and a la carte dining at lunch and dinner as well.
  • Brasserie La Lorraine – if your dreams of Paris involve a seafood platter, don’t miss this gorgeous brasserie. They go all out for Christmas which adds to the charm of going here for a special lunch or dinner in December.
  • Verjus – this gem of a restaurant offers seasonal produce and French classics with a modern twist. They offer a special New Year’s Eve menu too.
  • Bouillon Julien – this fabulous restaurant is one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau style in the World. Constructed by Edouard Fournier in 1906. In addition to being absolutely stunning, this restaurant is extremely affordable. As a “bouillon”, the concept is to serve traditional French dishes like foie gras, boeuf bourguignon, tarte tatin and more, at a very affordable price, think a saucisse puree for 10€, escargots for 8€ and salted caramel rice pudding for 3€. A fantastic deal and a memorable experience!

It can be pretty cold in Paris in December. Why not head to the spa for a day of relaxation? There are several gorgeous spas in Paris to choose from. You will be spoiled for choice!

Paris in December 2024: Where to Go, Events & Tips

Vin Chaud, twinkling lights, and all the Christmas markets: there is perhaps no time of year quite as magical as Paris in December . Here’s a complete rundown of the best of the City of Love this month; including where to go, what to see, and all of the must-attend events you won’t want to miss!

What's on? Paris in December guide. Here are the very best things to do in Paris during the end of the year suggested activities, things to do in December in Parsi, France, cafés and what to wear!

Please note that the 25th of December is a public holiday.  This is Christmas Day. Many French people celebrate Christmas during the evening of the 24th.

As such, many shops close early on the 24th of December. During the 25th public holiday, most shops will be closed, and supermarkets which are open will operate at reduced hours.

In 2024, the Christmas break (known in French as the Vacances de Noël)  will be from the 21st of December 2024 to the 6th of January 2025. This is the busiest time of the month to travel and often the most expensive as it’s typical for families to travel from one part of France to go on holiday or visit family members.

Paris in December: Where to Go, What to See & All the Eats. Visiting the French capital in December? These are all the Paris things you need to do!

Will it snow in Paris in December?

Why visit paris in december, what to wear in paris in december, enjoy a chocolat chaud, warm up with a vin chaud, admire the galeries lafayette christmas tree, spy the christmas lights in paris, go ice skating, visit the parisian christmas markets, see the window displays of the grand magasins, nautic paddle, enjoy a seine river dinner cruise, the broken arm (12 rue perrée, 75003 paris, france), fringe (106 rue de turenne, 75003 paris).

  • Circus Bakery ( 63 Rue Galande, 75005 Paris, France) – PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Villa leandre, passage de l’ancre, passage des panoramas, where to stay in paris, enjoyed reading this complete guide to visiting paris in december pin it now, read it again later:, paris weather in december.

Though Christmas markets are open and the city is illuminate, it must be said that the least charming aspect of the City of Light during the winter is easily its temperamental weather!

With average temperatures ranging between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius, and rain and ice an often occurrence, you’ll need to be prepared for some rainy days!

Snow in Paris during December is always a possibility, though this is more likely later in the winter (i.e. during February). For the past five years, there has been little to no snow during Paris in December and so, if you want the chance to catch a glimpse of the snow, I would schedule a January or February trip instead!

What's on? Paris in December guide. Here are the very best things to do in Paris during the end of the year suggested activities, things to do in December in Parsi, France, cafés and what to wear!

Imagine strolling along the Champs Élysées under the glow of a thousand twinkling lights. Picture yourself sipping on a vin chaud while admiring the architecture of the Louvre Museum. Or perhaps envision getting together with friends and warming up with a hot chocolate as day turns to night.

Well, though it’s ‘never a bad time to visit Paris,’ there are certainly some times of the year when it’s more fun to visit than others… and Paris in December is most definitely one of those times!

You see, with a festive vibe in the area, markets pop up across the city and there’s no better excuse than shorter days than to indulge in some fantastic French cuisine!

paris in december

Just a word of warning in advance: before visiting Paris in December, you should know that despite what you may expect, winter in the city is not actually low season!

As a result of the many dazzling events, sparkling light displays, and of course, the many Christmas markets held throughout the Parisian region, the French capital draws in crowds from far and wide.

As such, travel to and from Paris in December, as well as overnight accommodation tends to be much more expensive than what you might have expected. For the best prices, avoid December and instead look for deals in January and February when fewer people typically book to visit the city.

All in all, despite the cold weather and larger crowds, visiting Paris in December remains one of my favourite times to discover the city…

La Défense Christmas Market Guide: the largest Christmas market in Île de France near Paris, France

Wrap up warm and be sure to bring along several pairs of waterproof and comfortable shoes. While you might not want to traipse around the city in walking boots, a pretty pair of boots like these ones which can be paired with a nice outfit would not go amiss.

When it comes to staying dry, you’ll need to pack an umbrella, or at the very least a waterproof coat. Similarly, you’ll want to pack a warm hat, scarf, and gloves. Easy to layer clothes are musts when it comes to packing. After all, while it may be cold outside, the interiors of many shops, restaurants, and, of course, the metro, are all pretty warm!

This way, you can stay warm while wandering around outside and remain comfortable when exploring indoor locations which are often much hotter than you might expect (museums, the metro, bistros, and the like) .

Otherwise, must bring along essentials include a simple phrasebook  like this one  and a travel adapter  like this one  so you can charge all of your electronics during your stay!

What's on? Paris in December guide. Here are the very best things to do in Paris during the end of the year suggested activities, things to do in December in Parsi, France, cafés and what to wear!

What to do in Paris in December

One of the best things about visiting the French capital at the end of the year means that it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a hot chocolate and warm up in between exploring the streets of the city.

Some of the best places to enjoy a chocolat chaud include Carette (at Place des Vosges ) and at Lindt (near the Palais Garnier Opera house). If you opt to visit Carette, then know that even the outdoor seating is under the arcade of Place des Vosges and is so protected from bad weather!

If you instead opt to enjoy a hot chocolate from Lindt, then each drink is served with one of their Lindt chocolate balls. Opt for Chantilly cream to be added to your hot chocolate at both places for the ultimate indulgent experience!

carette hot chocolate

And while we’re on the subject of warming beverages, depending on the time of day, you may also want to enjoy a vin chaud. Though most cafés in Paris sell these during the month of December, the best place to enjoy a mulled wine is at one of the many Christmas markets in town. For those looking to recreate the Christmas markets wine at home, here’s my perfect mulled wine recipe !

Notre Dame de Paris Christmas Market Guide (Marché de Noël de Notre Dame): how to visit the festive Christmas market at Square René-Viviani, Latin Quarter, Paris, France

Each and every year, the stunning art nouveau stained-glass cupola of the chain’s flagship store is home to a massive Christmas tree . All sparkling lights and twinkling bright, it’s well worth a wander inside! In 2023, the Galeries Lafayette tree’s theme was called “ Noël de mes Rêves”  (Christmas of my dreams “) .

For the best photos of the tree, head to the third floor, where a 9-metre-long suspended glass walkway will allow you an entirely new perspective of both the cupola and the tree.

You should know that, while free to visit, only 15 people are allowed on the walkway at a time. This means that at busier times of the day, you may have to wait a little while before being allowed on!

Galeries Lafayette Christmas Tree 2023

If you want to see the illuminations in Paris, then a wander around any part of the city will allow you to enjoy sparkling lights and twinkling sights. With that being said, some of the best places to see the lights in Paris include Rue Saint Dominique, Place Vendome (where sky-high trees are erected on an annual basis) , and the Champs Elysées.

The pedestrian street of rue Montorgueil (where you’ll find the likes of the oldest patisserie in Paris , as well as a smattering of fantastic cafés and bars) is always a good location to wander along, and Village Bercy (once a wine producing area of the city) is decked out with twinkling light displays on an annual basis.

Christian Dior Atelier Design House, Avenue Montaigne, Paris, France: the Dior Balloon in Paris!

All around the City of Light, you’ll find pop-up ice skating rinks. Though entrance to the rinks is free, you’ll need to pay around €5 for skate rentals. Some of the best ice skating rinks in the city include that of Trocadero and around the Eiffel Tower.

How To Go Ice Skating at Galeries Lafayette in Paris, France (9th arrondissement)

For those looking for plenty of vin chaud and a festive ambience, it’s worth checking out at least one of the Christmas markets dotted around Paris . Some of the most popular include that of the Jardin des Tuileries, the large one held at La Defense, and the traditional event in Montmartre.

In times gone by, the most popular market was that of the Champs Élysées. However, a dispute between the event organiser and the city means that the market has since been relocated to Tuileries . Other spots in the city where Christmas markets are held include at Châtelet Les Halles and in the Square René-Viviani of the Latin Quarter.

From BHV in Le Marais to Printemps to the Galeries Lafayette flagship store, take place in a French pastime, that of ‘faire du lèche-vitrines’. Literally translated as ‘window licking,’ but in fact meaning ‘window shopping,’ take the time to enjoy the extravagant festive displays in each and every store window. For more information, here’s a guide to the Printemps Christmas windows of 2019 .

The biggest stand up paddle board race in the world takes place along the River Seine every December, typically during the first weekend of the month. As of 2023, there have been over 10 editions of the event whereby over 1000 participants paddle along the iconic Parisian river.

There are several options available, including this  Early Evening Dinner Cruise on the River Seine.  Finally, for those with time constraints who wish to simply see the sights of Paris on the water,  this 1-Hour Illuminations River Cruise  is short and sweet!

Coffee shops and cafés I’m loving this month!

Located in Le Marais, an area which was once a former marshy swamp but has since been transformed into one of the quirkiest areas of the city, The Broken Arm is a clothing store complete with an adjacent café. Home to some of the best coffee in the city, you can sip your beverage inside, or brave the cold and opt to drink it outside on the little tables in front of the shop!

The Broken Arm Coffee Shop in Le Marais, Paris, France

Though a little on the pricier side of things, fringe coffee shop is an absolute delight in Le Marais district of the city. Popular among visitors and locals alike, be sure to arrive earlier in the day so as to get the best of the seating (which is by the window) . Wander in to this 11th arrondissement café during opening hours and you can expect to find an extensive list of speciality coffees and cakes.

Circus Bakery (  63 Rue Galande, 75005 Paris, France ) – PERMANENTLY CLOSED

As of late 2021, Circus Bakery is unfortunately permanently closed. Be sure to check out our guide to the best bakeries in Paris for more foodie delights. Opened in autumn 2018, one of the best places to find cinnamon buns in the city can be found in the form of Circus Bakery .

Located in the Latin Quarter, not far from the world-famous Shakespeare and Co. bookshop, Circus serves incredible coffee (latté or espresso), and a wide range of baked goods from Friday through to Monday.

Circus Bakery Paris is the newest offering from the team at Fragments, a popular café in the 3rd arrondissement of the city.

Secret spots you’ve never heard of to visit this month in Paris

One stroll through the tourist-filled Ile de la Cité, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that there are no more secrets left to discover. However, this is simply not the case! For example, 1-3 Rue des Ursins is home to a pretty wooden door that looks medieval, but actually only dates back to the mid 1900s! If you’re looking for other quirky destinations close to Notre Dame, then check out my guide to the best secret spots in Île de la Cité .

Secret Spots in Ile de la Cite & A Complete Guide to the best of unusual, offbeat, hidden, and quirky things to do in the 1st and 4th arrondissements in Paris, France

While everyone knows about La Maison Rose and Le Clos Montmartre are always worth a visit, fewer still know about the beautiful street of Villa Leandre . Filled with art-deco houses, this English-inspired street is cobbled and makes for a perfect photo spot! Head to No. 10 and you’ll even find a rather humorous sign which reads ‘Downing Street,’ in reference to the Prime Minister’s offices in the UK.

Villa Leandré: An English-Inspired Art-Deco Street in Montmartre, 18th arrondissement, Paris, France

Alleged to be the oldest passageway in Paris, the Anchor Passag e dates back for centuries and also happens to be home to the oldest umbrella repair shop in the city, Pep’s.

As of early 2021, unfortunately the oldest umbrella repair shop has permanently closed down.  In operation for close to fifty years, you’ll find this little store tucked away among leafy vines and along the little cobbled lane…

Passage de l'Ancre Paris France

If you’re looking to shop undercover and want to escape the cold, then the passages couverts are early 19th-century shopping arcades filled with all manner of boutiques, shops, and little restaurants.

However, it has to be said that my favourite of all is that of Passage des Panoramas . Along the arcade, you’ll find Prins Patrick, a vendor of vintage postcards for as little as €2 each!

After all, the answer will certainly help determine what you should pack. The coldest winter month in Paris is January.

If you’re visiting in December, you should still expect cold weather. But what does that mean? At the end of the day, ‘cold’ is a relative term.

To put it in more specific terms, the average temperature in Paris in December typically ranges between 3-8 degrees Celsius (39-47 degrees Fahrenheit).

You can also expect a mix of cloudy and clear days, so you usually get a peek at the sun on some days.

Where to Stay in Paris in December

When determining where to stay, it’s important to consider your goals. If you plan to do a lot of walking or to take advantage of the public transportation system, then you’ll want to opt for a more central location with nearby metro stops.

If you’re visiting Paris for the very first time, you might consider staying in the 6th arrondissement. This area is walkable enough to some key sights, is lively without being overwhelming, and has plenty of charming cafes nearby.

The 6th arrondissement is a favorite among first timers making it one of the best places to stay in Paris for first-time visitors . Other favorites include the 1st, 4th and 5th arrondissements.

If you’ve visited Paris before and seen most of the typical tourist sites, you may want to stay further from the center for a different experience. Consider staying in Montmartre, the 18th arrondissement.

While this location would be more of a trek for anyone wanting to walk to many of the main Parisian landmarks , it is very well connected by metro making it easy to get anywhere in the city fairly quickly. Plus, there’s a lot to explore in charming Montmartre itself.

MY TOP HOTEL PICKS IN PARIS LUXURY: Hôtel D’Aubusson – relax in the pool or get a massage in the spa at this luxurious hotel set in a 17th-century mansion. MID-RANGE: Relais Hôtel du Vieux Paris – quirky decor and excellent service centrally located near Notre Dame. BUDGET: Hotel Cluny Square – centrally located with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, this is a great budget option with metro right outside.

Things to do in Paris in December

There are plenty of wonderful things to do in Paris in December. Any one of these would be worth adding to your Paris itinerary .

Explore the Museums

If the chill in the air starts to get to you in December in Paris, a world of art awaits you behind the doors of many of Paris’ spectacular museums.

The Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Orangerie, and plenty of lesser-known but equally worthwhile museums are open year-round to visitors.

One of the best things about traveling to Paris in December is that you can often avoid the typical long lines at popular tourist attractions.

Take advantage of this to get into Paris’ impressive museums and spend a leisurely morning or afternoon strolling through the city’s cultural artifacts.

what to do in Paris in December

Go Holiday Window Shopping Along Champs Élysées

The Champs Élysées, known as the most beautiful avenue in the world, transforms into an even more magnificent sight during the holiday season.

It’s decked with dazzling Christmas decorations, creating a shimmering ribbon of light that stretches from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde.

Every year, the Christmas market at Champs Élysées attracts both locals and tourists, offering a variety of gift stalls and food vendors.

Grab a cone of hot, roasted chestnuts and some vin chaud (mulled wine) as you browse the artisan crafts and unique gifts available.

For a special touch, don’t miss the Ferris wheel at the Place de la Concorde. From up on the wheel you’ll get a breathtaking view over Paris, all lit up with its city lights in the evening.

Have Hot Chocolate

You might’ve seen videos on social media of tourists reveling in Paris’ hot chocolate scene. There is some debate about where to get the best cup of hot chocolate in Paris, with many giving credit to Angelina.

But another must-try for a decadent cup is Carette. The location at Place de Vosges is particularly atmospheric, as it looks out onto the pleasant square and feels a bit more tucked away.

Spoon in a dollop of thick, whipped cream and order a pastry to complete the sweet treat as you sip in the warmth to take the edge off the crisp air.

There’s only one way to know which establishment serves the best-tasting hot chocolate – a self-guided taste test across the city, of course. So no more wondering what to do in Paris in December; Go hot chocolate hunting!

December in Paris

Have Hot Crepes in Montmartre

Another treat that’s especially fun to enjoy on a Paris December day is a hot sweet or savory crepe.

Pop into Breizh cafe in the Marais neighborhood, popular with both locals and tourists, for a dine-in experience. Be sure to order some cider to go with it, as crepes are often paired with cider.

Alternatively, you can order a crepe from one of the street stalls you’re bound to run into around the city.

Take a Champagne Day Tour

Did you know that Paris is only a short train ride away from the birthplace of Champagne? Reims is known as the capital of the Champagne region and it’s well worth a visit for anyone who loves bubbly. There are several great champagne day trips from Paris to choose from.

Taking the train out in the countryside of Paris will give you a chance to appreciate beautiful winter scenery before spending a day tasting a variety of champagnes.

Whether or not you already enjoy champagne, you haven’t really tried it until you experience it in Reims and you might be surprised by what you try.

A visit out to Champagne also includes a visit to Dom Perignon’s former home and resting place – an interesting opportunity for history buffs.

Warming up with several glasses of bubbly is certainly one of the best things to do in Paris in December.

See the Eiffel Tower

No trip to Paris in December or any other month is complete without seeing the Eiffel Tower. Whether you’re in Paris for the first time or the fifth, I’m pretty sure you’ll want to go by the iconic tower if just for a quick peek and a picture.

The famous Eiffel Tower was finished in 1889 and has been a symbol of the city of love ever since. You can climb the tower either by walking all the way up or taking the elevator partially up and walking the last bit.

Just a warning – if you’ve got vertigo, those steps are pretty scary as you can see straight down between the metal! Yet, the views from the top are spectacular and you get a true bucket list item crossed off the list.

One of the best parts of visiting Paris in December is the chance to join in on the festive cheer. Visiting Galeries Lafayette during the holiday season is a must. Stroll along the elaborately decorated Christmas windows and take in all of the holiday decorations that light up the area.

Sacre Coeur offers some of the most emblematic views of Paris and is a must-see if you have more than one day in Paris .

The entrance to climb the dome is on the left before entering the basilica doors, but you gotta be prepared – there are 300 steps to the top so you really get to work that bootie.

That said, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the city making it one of the best views in Paris.

The interior of the basilica is spectacular and also worth the visit with colorful frescoes and majestic columns. Experiencing Sacre Coeur is a top thing to do in Paris France in December.

Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral Will Reopen!

Notre Dame Cathedral overlooking the Seine River

Paris's most treasured medieval monument, Notre Dame Cathedral, will partially reopen on December 8, 2024.  Of course unexpected issues might still cause the date to change, but progress appears to be going well, with the spire now in place (although still surrounded by scaffolding).

Built mostly during the 12th and 13th centuries in the then-new Gothic style on Ile de la Cité, the historical "heart" of Paris, the Cathedral came close to being destroyed by a horrific fire on April 15, 2018.

Almost miraculously, most of the Cathedral's most treasured art, historical artifacts, religious relics, and magnificent stained glass windows escaped destruction (thanks, in part, to heroic rescue efforts).  Also miraculously, due to the intensity of the blaze, no one died due to the fire.

Massive reconstruction and restoration efforts involving Europe's most skilled builders and artisans began as soon as the initial clean-up - not a trivial effort, due to the environment impacts and health consequences of melted lead - concluded.

To the degree possible, the restored cathedral will look identical to the pre-fire original, including a spire virtually identical to the mid-19th century original designed by French architect Eugene Violette-le-Duc.

You can’t see and do it all in one trip so, as stated in post #1, 4 nights and 3 full days would cover lots of ground and cementing the idea of another visit.

paris trips december 2023

It's your trip - please yourself! But you might want to look up some suggested walking routes to get some ideas rather than finding yourself wandering somewhere that doesn't interest you. Just Google "paris suggested walks" - lots of options.

When I worked for a living, I did several long-weekend trips, also from the East Coast of the US.

In my experience three days in Paris , including arrival day ( aka "jet-lag day") is tough. But adding just one more day can make all the difference.

The amount of time you have is sufficient for a nice, relaxed trip, as long as you carefully plan exactly what you want to see. If you stay centrally, you can walk to many attractions. If you stay south of the Seine, near the border of the sixth and the seventh, you can easily walk to the Louvre, the Orsay, and the Ile de la Cite .

The advantage to traveling alone is that you don't have to spend time waiting for someone else, or trying to compromise between competing priorities.

Have a great trip.

Here's a suggestion for a walk after you visit the Louvre. Assuming you go to the Louvre in the morning, upon leaving, head across Rue de Rivoli and walk through the Palais Royal gardens.

When you exit at Rue des Petits Champs, turn right toward Victoires. At Rue de la Vrilliere, turn right and eat lunch at Bistro Victoires.

After lunch, walk back toward Palais Royal and find Galerie Vivienne (beside Bistrot Vivienne). The gallery will be lovely with all its Christmas decorations. Leaving the passage, walk over to Bourse metro and ride to Opera. You may want to arrange a tour at the Opera. From there you can walk over to Galleries Lafayette to see their wonderful Christmas window displays. Also go in and see the magnificent decorations at the center of the store.

That's a pretty good walk. But if you like, you could continue down to Place Vendome and then right back to the Louvre area with the Christmas Fair at Tuileries Gardens.

'Love Trip: Paris' Showcases Dating Diversity in 2023

Reality television has always had a place, but it feels like it's in its prime right now, specifically when it comes to dating reality shows. Over time, the subgenre has reinvented itself, with new models like Love Is Blind and Too Hot To Handle that show different approaches to building a lasting connection. The former tries to prove looks aren't important, and that it's what connection you build that dictates relationship success. The latter takes really attractive people and restricts them from hooking up with each other in the hopes they'll form real connections. These two -- plus shows like The Bachelor , 90 Day Fiancé , and Love Island -- are fantastic. They bring a little drama into our lives, watching the story of complete strangers falling in love over and over again. While dating shows have worked, they've also become monotonous.

Until the recent shows mentioned, the formula has become repetitive and predictable. A lot of them have the same recipe: a man dates multiple women and picks a winner, or vice versa. It's not at all reflective of the progressive society we mostly reside in currently. Dating is no longer black and white. And as entertaining as it can be, the reality dating world is lacking a huge community of people. That's where Love Trip: Paris comes in, and holy crêpe it is juicy, addicting, and inclusive.

RELATED: Best Dating Shows On Netflix

A breath of fresh paris air.

Love Trip: Paris is a Freeform original that also streams on Hulu . The premise of the show chronicles four American women who travel across the pond to meet some French suitors. Reality tv has always been criticized for the lack of diversity in sexuality, race, and gender expression. Love Trip: Paris breaks those barriers. It is a basic tale of a bunch of singles living in a house together, reminiscent of The Real World , and entirely subverts all expectations by not following strict heteronormativity. Three of the four women in the show are queer, and the suitors -- as well as the love seekers --- are from different backgrounds and races.

Many in the queer community are desperately seeking representation in love and relationships in popular media and struggle to find that. In an interview with ABC News as reported by GMA , one of the cast members, Josielyn Aguilera, opened up about her hopes that the show would break the mold in how reality dating shows look moving forward. "I hope that this really breaks that glass ceiling, of letting other shows like this exist," she said. "I hope this really breaks that and we get to start seeing more like LGBT people fall in love and more people of color fall in love -- more people in general just fall in love."

An Inclusive and Diverse Show That Could Set a New Trend

Having a show that is so open to inclusivity and diversity for all can allow those cast members to shine and be themselves, which will make it easier to fall in love with themselves as well as with those they're courting in the hopes of a true connection. The show features an elimination each week in which the four women decide who stays and who goes. Each week, a new suitor is brought in to switch things up. Among the suitors, there are lesbians, bisexual men, bisexual women, and people of color to make sure that everyone has a shot at love and possibly even discovering something they weren't sure they liked.

Audiences get to see a diverse cast with sexual and racial representation that isn’t normally seen on a dating show, and it's refreshing, to say the least. This could be the start of more shows bridging the gap and showing that society has progressed to representation and acceptance, and it seems as if it has.

Netflix has announced The Ultimatum: Queer Love will debut on the streaming platform on May 24. The second season will feature five LGBTQ+ couples that are trying to figure out if their relationship is forever or for just a moment. Queer Love is the second installment of The Ultimatum reality dating show and is the first that is entirely LGBTQ+ focused. The premise of the show is that one half of the partnership is ready for marriage and to settle down, and the other isn't quite there yet.

Queer Love, as well as Love Trip: Paris, are exciting developments for the queer community as the representation is the entire basis of the show. There is a diligent effort made to include all letters of the LGBTQ+ alphabet family and opens the door for other shows to take point. While there have been other reality shows that will have one or two queer contestants, it always seems like an afterthought or a way to invoke drama. All in all, there's more space for LGBTQ+-friendly shows, and reality tv fans are excited to see more shows like Love Trip: Paris popping up.
