Isle of Iona Tours

Tours to the isle of iona.

We reach the tiny, sacred Isle of Iona by a 10-minute ferry. Crossing over azure waters from the Isle of Mull. It’s been a place of Christian worship and pilgrimage ever since St Columba and his companions came from Ireland. They established a monastery here in 563 AD.

You can visit this special island with us on our four day small group tours to Mull, Iona and the Highlands and on our six day island hopping tours to Mull, Iona, Skye, the Highlands and Loch Ness. All of these tours leave from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Visitor vehicles are not permitted on the Isle of Iona. You’ll therefore travel on the ferry as a foot passenger. This only adds to its tranquillity.

Visit Iona Abbey , still a place of worship, and take a stroll up the small hill above it, Torr an Aba, where St Columba’s writing hut is thought to have stood. You can encounter St Oran’s Chapel and Reilig Òdhrain. It’s said to be the burial place of 48 ancient kings of Scotland, including Macbeth.

It’s worth rambling to the Iona’s highest point at Dun I for panoramic views to other Hebridean islands such as Tiree, Coll and the Treshnish Islands. On a really clear day you’ll glimpse Rhum, Eigg and Skye and even the Irish coast.

While in Iona, why not take a sip from the Well of Eternal Youth, believed to hold the blessing of St Brigid of Ireland.

As you arrive back on Mull from your Isle of Iona Tour you’ll feel restored and at peace.

McCabe presents our retreat staying on the sacred Isle of Iona.

The island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland, is the symbolic centre of Scottish Christianity. Through 1400 years of history its fortunes have fluctuated, from its heights as one of the greatest centres of learning in Mediaeval Europe, to its lows as a crumbling ruin. However, thanks to the fame of its monastic founder, St Columba, the island has always been revered as a holy place, and, over the centuries, Iona has continually been re-invented and reconstructed as a centre for pilgrimage. Iona's fame began in 563 AD when Columba, with thirteen followers, landed at the south end of the island, at St Columba's Bay, to establish a monastery.

Time can be spent exploring Iona with the option to join in with the Iona Community and attend daily services in Iona Abbey. You may take walks around the island, or spend the days on your own in quiet reflection and retreat and joining any included activities or meals as you so wish. We will also have the possibility to sail from Iona to Fingal’s Cave on the small island of Staffa. The focus is on travelling with like-minded people, accompanied by a McCabe pilgrimage leader who will offer optional opportunities for worship and reflection.

Spiritual Programme In addition to the programme of services at Iona Abbey and any activities with the Iona Community, the pilgrimage leader will offer optional worship and reflections. Everything is optional and you may prefer to simply find your own place of peace and solitude.

Practical information

Iona and st columba.

Iona is a tiny and beautiful Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland, cradle of Christianity in Scotland. In 563AD, the Irish monk Columba (Columkille) established a monastic settlement, evangelising large parts of Scotland and the north of England and Iona became an important centre of European Christianity. In the Middle Ages it became the site of a Benedictine abbey, and over the centuries it has attracted many thousands of people on their own pilgrim journeys.

The Iona community

The Iona Community was founded in 1938 by George MacLeod, minister, visionary and prophetic witness for peace, in the context of the poverty and despair of the Depression. From a dockland parish in Glasgow, he took unemployed skilled craftsmen and young trainee clergy to Iona to rebuild both the monastic quarters of the mediaeval abbey and the common life by working and living together, sharing skills and effort as well as joys and achievement. That original task became a sign of hopeful rebuilding of community in Scotland and beyond. The experience shaped – and continues to shape – the practice and principles of the Iona Community. As an aside, the late Ursula MacLeod, George’s cousin, was a founder member of McCabe Pilgrimages.

Today, Iona remains a centre for pilgrimage and the daily services of the Iona Community are open to all. There is a year-round population of over 100; long-established island families as well as more recent arrivals, including those who work for the Iona Community as staff or volunteers. The abbey itself is now managed by Historic Scotland but the Iona Community remains in residence as a living, worshipping presence. The islanders, the Iona Community and Historic Scotland work together to maintain Iona as a place of welcome.

The UK weather and Scottish spring, summer and autumn has its own mood as we are all aware. Please do cater for all eventualities remembering that the coastal winds can make warmer days still seem cooler. Comfortable trainers or boots will be ideal to wander Iona and get the best of the scenery and to view the wildlife and abundant birdlife.

There is a certain amount of walking (and stairs) involved on a daily basis on this pilgrimage so please make sure you pack comfy footwear for this so that you are prepared. Your Tour Leader will keep you updated on a daily basis with what to expect the following day. If you are finding it difficult to keep up then please make sure you tell them so they can help you to find places to rest and relax and then you can re-join the group at a later stage.

Boats feature strongly in our programme and can be a lot of fun.  Our coach travels with us on the ferry to Mull which is a large modern vessel with restaurant, bar, shop, lounges and viewing decks.  The boat has lifts so is fully accessible.

In contrast, foot passengers, bicycles and islanders’ cars only are allowed on the small ferry to cross to Iona. The hotel is a short walk from the ferry and luggage will be transported.  The Iona island taxi can assist anyone who prefers not to walk from the ferry to the hotel.

We will travel in our own coach to and from Glasgow and be accompanied by experienced McCabe leaders. On Iona we will meet members of the Iona community and offer two programmes, one involving more walking than the other. A highlight will be a service in Iona Abbey itself.

Guide Margerie and Driver Allister excellent. The tour occasionally strenuous; bus rides whole day. Bus quite confortable; Wi-Fi appreciated. Expected more meals included. Big Tour group - 44 Pax - a bit too many for my taste. When I inquired I was told max will be 35.....for me more acceptable. Hotel's fine except Isle of Skye: "Dunollie"- I had a claustrophobic room; no idea where to put my suitcase. After all the add. single room supplement is not little. Itinerary very interesting.

After satisfying your adventurous spirit, we take you north back to Tobermory. Maybe it’s time to try the seafood.

  • Savour seafood in Oban

You travel south to Craignure to catch your ferry back to the mainland.

Your ferry arrives in Oban where you have time to taste the fantastic local seafood and wander around this Victorian harbour town.

You then venture to Kilmartin Glen, an archaeologist’s dream. Within this area, there are around 800 ancient monuments, including burial chambers, rock carvings, standing stones, castles and more. Your driver-guide will help you understand the significance of these and make the best use of your time here.

Your last stop before arriving in Glasgow for the evening is Inveraray, a gorgeous wee town boasting an impressive view over Loch Fyne.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

You stay two nights in the picture-perfect port town of Tobermory.

* Please be aware that Tobermory is busy. You may need to be flexible with rooms we're able to reserve for you here. If you'd prefer to find your own accommodation for this location, please choose the 'book your own accommodation' option when you book your tour.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

If you have any more questions, call us on +44(0)131 226 3133, email [email protected] , or check out our full FAQs .

Discover Your Backyard - Pilgrimage to Iona

Updated: Mar 25

pilgrimage tours to iona

Author: Barry Pickard

Iona is only a small island, less than 4 square miles in area, and has a tiny population of just over a hundred. Yet this island has dramatically shaped Scottish history, being the cradle of Christianity in Scotland.

It was on Iona that St. Columba and his twelve associates landed after sailing from Ireland, establishing the abbey which the island was to become famous for in 563 AD. As this monastery developed and became a seat of learning, the island became a launch pad for missionaries, spreading the Celtic form of Christianity throughout the lands of the Picts and Gaels, and even as far south as the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumberland.

pilgrimage tours to iona

Over the centuries, the island was the spiritual centre of Scotland, but this was to change during the Reformation in 1560, when much of the abbey, nunnery and impressive stone crosses, were dismantled and destroyed. Today, the 13th century abbey has been rebuilt, and the ruins of the nunnery are the most intact in Britain, but there is little evidence of the original monastery built by St. Columba. This has not stopped Iona, however, becoming a major centre of pilgrimage, with around 130,000 people visiting the island every year.

Join us in this travel post as we discover this fascinating island, giving tips along the way on how you too can visit Iona.

Don’t forget that Tailor-Made Itineraries delights in creating bespoke self-guided tours. So, if visiting Scotland’s islands appeals to you, reach out to me by email . I would be more than happy to design a self-guided tour around your requirements incorporating Iona, or indeed, a general tour of Scotland.

The Planning Stage

The first decision we needed to make was how to access the island. There are a handful of tour companies, operating out of Oban and the island of Mull, that run trips to Iona, sometimes combined with sailings to the likes of Staffa or even sea safaris.

Tailor-Made Top Tip: We have taken a Staffa Tours cruise to the Isle of Staffa (see our previous blog post ), and this cruise also docks at Iona allowing you to explore the island for a couple of hours (although on that trip, we chose not to disembark).

However, we didn’t want to be restricted to a set time on Iona, so we decided to take our car, going on the CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull, then drove across the island to the small port of Fionnphort. From there, a small ferry sails back and forth the short distance between Iona and Fionnphort (note, the ferry is pedestrian only, unless you live on Iona and own a car).

Tailor-Made Top Tip: If you wish to take your car on the CalMac ferry from Oban to Mull, book well in advance. There are only limited spaces, and these sell out quickly during high season.

Oban to Mull

Our trip started at Oban’s ferry port, which is a modern facility, with an indoor terminal, and only a five-minute walk from the centre of town. The ferry itself was also modern, comfortable, and well-appointed. The sailing to Mull only took around 45-minutes, and we enjoyed bright sunshine for the full journey. The blue skies allowed us a lovely view of the Oban waterfront, and we sailed close to the scenic Lismore Lighthouse, then the imposing Duart Castle as we pulled into Craignure harbour.

Tailor-Made Top Tip: Return tickets on the ferry between Oban and Craignure cost £7.60 per person and £28.50 for the car, with under 5s going free. If you don’t take your car, you can take the coach between Craignure and Fionnphort, but this costs £17 per person, so it is cheaper to take your own car if there are two or more of you.

Magnificent Mull

Having the car, gave us the opportunity to stop at the roadside and admire the stunning hills and mountains of Mull. There wasn’t much in the way of facilities or attractions to stop at during the hour-long drive, but the scenery more than makes up for this.

If you are enjoying this post, remember and subscribe to my mailing list to receive my latest blog posts.

On arriving at Fionnphort, we found this little settlement had all the necessary facilities, with a small ferry terminal building, plenty of parking and a couple of hot food options. We left the car in the ample parking that leads down to the harbour area and joined the CalMac ferry, paying as we boarded.

Tailor-Made Top Tip: Currently, tickets can’t be prebooked for the ferry between Fionnphort and Iona. An adult return ticket costs £3.70 and children over five are £1.90.

The ferry journey only takes around ten minutes and brings you into Iona’s quaint little village, located at St. Ronan’s Bay. We walked up through the tiny settlement towards Iona Abbey . The building is in the care of Historic Scotland and currently you need to book a timed ticket to get entry.

The Isle of Iona

Tailor-Made Top Tip: Adult tickets for the abbey cost £9, however, you should consider buying an annual membership (£52.20) or a one-year membership (£58). If you are spending several days exploring Scotland, you will probably recoup your membership fee.

There are a number of buildings to explore at the abbey and you should set aside at least an hour to explore the buildings. The Abbey Church, built in the 1200s when the Benedictines arrived on Iona, is an oasis of calm and very simple in design.

The abbey cloisters are quite a delight and beautiful to walk around, with a peaceful garden in the centre, ideal for quiet contemplation.

Michael Chapel is quite tiny and was also built in the 1200s.

The Abbey Museum, housed in the former infirmary, sets out perfectly the remains of tall stone crosses and intricate tomb stones.

Just outside of the abbey is St Oran’s Chapel. Built in the 1100s, it was the burial chapel of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. The graveyard, as well as hosting these clan chiefs, also boasts the graves of a number of early Scottish kings, as well as royalty from Ireland and Norway. It is also the last resting place of the influential Labour politician, John Smith.

Exploring Iona

Iona Abbey is certainly the main attraction when visiting the island, but take time to visit the Iona Heritage Centre , which has some interesting displays about life on the island over the years. There are also a number of quaint little shops, some breath-taking coastal views, MacLean’s Cross and the ruins of the Nunnery.

Tailor-Made Top Tip: We had lunch at the St Columba Hotel and can highly recommend their meals. The hotel also has a lovely outdoor area where you can enjoy food and drinks.

Iona has a great deal to offer the visitor, whether you are looking for quiet meditation, history or captivating scenery. In total, we spent over four hours on the island, which was enough to see Iona Abbey and the main sites around the village. But to fully explore the island out with the village, especially its stunning bays and beaches, you should plan to spend at least a full day on the island. Accommodation is limited, although there are options in and around Fionnphort that would give easy access to the island.

Iona: Soul Pilgrimage

August 2nd - 9th, 2025, at bishop's house retreat center, iona, scotland, with kathleen and wendy swanson, when we embark on a pilgrimage to a sacred place it is natural that transformation, healing and awakening occurs., iona, off the coast of scotland, is one such place. george macleod described iona as a “thin place,” where the material and spiritual worlds seem separated only by the thinnest of veils., it is the place where we can be both of heaven and of the earth..

David on mountain

Barely three miles long and one mile wide, this small sacred isle holds a profound peace and breathtaking beauty that touches everyone who goes there. St. Columba (or Colum Cille, in Gaelic) established the first Celtic Church and monastic community here in 563 CE.

We will look to Celtic traditions and ancient spiritual practices to deepen our own connection to the sacred. To embark on a pilgrimage is a calling, one that our ancestors understood before us. We will walk the land of Iona together as pilgrims, wandering to special places on the island to embrace the wilderness and to pray with nature.

For a 7-night / 8-day once-in-a-lifetime transformational journey. We welcome people of all faiths or non-faiths as the voice of the Great Mystery knows no denomination.

Each day you will be led through experiences that:

+ Restore the Natural Rhythm of your Body

  • Gentle yoga
  • Guided meditations
  • Breathwork, embodiment practices, and qigong

+ Reawaken your Heart

  • Wisdom teachings and practices from the Celtic tradition
  • Guided Sacred Walks profoundly connecting you with the Earth, Sea, and Sky.
  • Connection with our community

+ Reclaim your Center

  • Pilgrimage starts with an intention, and you will be supported every step of the way to align within this on your journey.
  • Soul writing
  • Time to rest, restore, and sit with the sacred land

Collectively and individually, we will listen for the whispers of the sacred within ourselves, the land, water, plants, animals, Iona Abby, each other, and sacred locations that have been prayed over for thousands of years.

You will be supported with your pilgrimage from the moment you sign-up through your return home. You will receive travel recommendations, packing lists, practices to prepare for your journey, suggested reading, and more.

What to Expect:

August, 2nd 2025

You will meet Wendy and Kathleen in Oban. Travel to Iona is a pilgrimage in itself; we’ll travel together by ferry, coach across the island, and another ferry to arrive on Iona. Oban is a three-hour train journey from Glasgow; we recommend that you arrive in Oban on Friday and stay overnight at your choice of hotel or B&B to avoid a very early-morning train journey from Glasgow.

August 2nd, 2025 – August 9th, 2025

RHYTHMS OF OUR DAY

Morning:  Create openness as we arise to experience the sacred. (Rising of the new day sun in the east – opening ourselves to new possibilities of connecting with the sacred within and around us.) Begin the day with prayer, meditation, or gentle movement. People of all spiritual traditions, or no tradition, are welcome. Following morning service and breakfast, we’ll explore our theme using movement, reflection, journaling, and connection through the island.

Midday:  Embodied wisdom and Sacred alchemy (deep connection within and the land -spaciousness for the inner work of the soul) Lunch will be followed by an afternoon break with time for personal reflection, wandering the island, or rest.

Evening: Rest and Reverence (as we make our through the daily medicine wheel we end up being held by the earth, landing in deep rest and reverence for all of life) We’ll come back together with a reflective gathering to integrate our day’s experience, followed by dinner and evening prayer.

August 9th, 2025

After breakfast, we’ll bid farewell to the island and travel by ferry and coach back to Oban to part ways.

bishopshouse

Accommodations:

Bishop’s House Retreat Center

We’ll have exclusive use of Bishop’s House, a beautiful center built in 1894 that serves as a retreat house for the Scottish Episcopal Church—though you don’t need to be of any particular faith tradition to enjoy their warm welcome and hospitality!

Bishop’s House is a retreat house, not a hotel; it offers comfortable, simple accommodation including wholesome home-cooked meals, use of a library with open fire, access to a beautiful chapel, and a view of the sound of Iona. All bedrooms are up one flight of stairs and each bathroom is shared by several guests. Although Bishop’s House itself is just a short walk from the ferry, this retreat will require some walking over rough ground, short uphill walks, and muddy terrain. In order to participate fully in this part of the pilgrimage, you should be comfortable walking two to three miles on uneven ground. Please see the FAQ section below for more details on location, weather, and accommodation.

There is a very limited number of rooms available so please register early.

If you have specific roommate requests, please let Kathleen know at the time of registration: [email protected]

We’ll have exclusive use of Bishop’s House retreat center. Expect simple, comfortable, and cozy accommodation, bathrooms with a private tub or shower shared among a few guests. We’ll be asked to help set and clear away dishes from the table, and help with a few very simple housekeeping tasks before we depart.

Will I have a private room? Will you match me with a roommate?

There are a limited number of single rooms available. Register early to reserve one of these. If you are travelling with a companion please let us know this when you register. If you are travelling on your own and would like to share a room, we are happy to match you with a roommate.

What meals are included?

All three meals – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – are included and served at Bishop’s House for the duration of our retreat.

What kind of food is served?

Food is home-cooked, traditional Scottish fare served family style; expect wholesome and hearty but basic meals: fish, meat, or poultry, cooked vegetables or salad, soups and fresh-baked bread. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available; if you have a specific food allergy the staff will do their best to accommodate. Tea, coffee, and herbal teas are freely available. You are welcome to enjoy meals out at one of several wonderful restaurants on the island serving higher-end meals, including local organic produce. A guest-use refrigerator is also available. There is no alcohol served at Bishop’s House, but participants are welcome to bring their own alcohol for thoughtful consumption on the premises, or enjoy a visit to the local pub!

Is WiFi available?

WiFi is available in the library and lounge. How much money do I need to bring with me? Although all your necessary expenses are included in the pilgrimage fee, Iona has a number of wonderful craft and artisan shops, an excellent bookshop, and several cafes, restaurants, and a pub, so you may want to budget accordingly! There is limited access to ATMs on the island, though you can pay with a debit or credit card in most shops.

What kind of electrical adapter will I need?

For US and Canadian citizens: Phones and laptops require a simple outlet adapter. Hair dryers are available from Bishop’s House, if needed. If you have any medical equipment that requires use of an electrical outlet, such as a CPAP, please let us know in advance so we can help you plan accordingly.

What is the weather like? Do I need any special gear?

Scotland is often rainy and cool but there can also be sunny and warmer days especially in July. It is a temperate climate and rarely gets very hot or very cold, although the damp and wind can make it feel colder. At a minimum, bring sturdy, water-resistant walking shoes and a waterproof jacket; we recommend waterproof boots, water-resistant hiking trousers or rain pants, and a really good rain jacket! You may also want to bring a simple day pack, water bottle, and a head torch, in case you want to ramble home after dark.

How much walking is there?

Iona is a completely walkable island, and you can’t experience its full beauty without some walking. We will include different outings to sites on the island as part of our retreat experience. We recommend that you be able to walk about 2-3 miles over uneven ground in order to participate fully in this part of our experience.

What is your cancellation policy?

The deposit of $500 is an administrative fee that secures your space in this intimate retreat and is nonrefundable. There are no exceptions to the refund policy. As this is a once in a lifetime pilgrimage we expect this to sell out quickly. If you are called to this special place please do not delay. The balance of the program fee is due by February 1st, 2025 and is nonrefundable after that time. We HIGHLY SUGGEST that you obtain travel insurance to include trip cancellation (“cancel for any reason” coverage will give you the widest leeway for cancellation), which will cover financial losses from any personal emergencies or other events which require your cancellation.

What happens if the organizers have to cancel the pilgrimage?

In the unlikely event that we either do not have enough participants registered six months prior (by the final payment due date) or if there is an emergency which prevents us from leading the experience, all of your retreat fees paid will be refunded. However, we are not responsible for any other losses, including travel expenses, which you may incur due to this cancellation.

What is the best way to get to Iona?

We recommend flying into Glasgow airport. (You can fly into Edinburgh, though it is a longer train ride from Oban, and you may need to change trains in Glasgow.) From Glasgow Airport you can take a shuttle bus into the center of town. Trains to Oban depart from Queen Street Train Station, and it’s just a few hundred feet from the Oban train terminal to the ferry. You can buy your train tickets in advance to save some money, or you can purchase them at the time of departure. It takes about three hours to make the journey to Oban by train. Although it is possible to take a bus from Glasgow to Oban, we highly recommend the train as it’s more comfortable, and a beautiful journey!

Those who cannot afford the time for an overnight stay on the island will still find it worthwhile to visit for the day. The journey from Oban can be breathtaking, combining an hour at sea with an hour by road across Mull. A regular day trip from the mainland will give you 2-3 hours on Iona, and enough time to take in the atmosphere and visit the main attractions. If you are holidaying on Mull then you can be more relaxed about when you travel, and even take advantage of the after-hours water taxis that can be booked from Iona.

There are various tour packages available which can be booked in advance: you can choose whether to visit only Mull and Iona or take in additional attractions such as the Isle of Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. These can be booked though any of the following joint operators:

The Way of St Andrews

Welcome to the way of st. andrews.

There are now eight great pilgrim ways wending their way quietly through Scotland’s diverse and scenic landscape to St Andrews. A popular start point is Edinburgh but others include Aberdeen, Motherwell, the famous Isle of Iona in the west, and Hexham and Carlisle in the north of England. Some of you may not be able to do a complete way but, never mind, the ways are divided into easy sections for a half-day/one day pilgrimage.

On this website you will find information and maps for each pilgrim way. Then, arriving at St Andrews, you will enjoy the thrill of walking through the giant ruins of the old cathedral overlooking the famous sandy beaches and the North Sea. Don’t miss the special circuit round the many places of religious or cultural interest, and don’t forget to have your Way Card stamped at the Tourist Office in the main street.

The Roman Catholic Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, and other church leaders are strong supporters of the revival of the St Andrews pilgrimage and particularly hope that young people will take part.

Remember, everyone is welcome no matter what religion or belief. So, enjoy being a pilgrim in Scotland, enjoy the “Little Camino” and, to keep in touch and share your experiences, please click the icons above and follow us on social media.

Length: 4 km

For over 500 years, until the Reformation, pilgrims arrived to worship at the shrine of St Andrews in the great cathedral, consecrated in 1318 by King Robert the Bruce. Many of these pilgrims arrived at the West Port, the start of this 6km circuit of St Andrews. Go back in ...

Length: 37 km

This extension of St Margaret's Way continues along Fife Coastal path through ancient fishing villages along beaches and over rocks until the spires of St Andrews come into view over miles of rolling fairways. The path continues up through the harbour into the precincts of the ruined cathedral.

St Ninian’s Way: Carlisle to St Andrews

Length: 550 km

St Ninian’s Way is dedicated to the memory of this early Christian saint and missionary, often known as the Apostle to the Southern Picts. Starting at the ancient cathedral in Carlisle in England St Ninian's Way goes north across the border into Scotland and west to Whithorn and St Ninian's ...

Length: 250 km

Starting from Hexham Abbey in the north of England, St Wilfrid’s Way strikes north to Hadrian’s Wall and onto the Pennine Way. It crosses the border into Scotland and proceeds by qquiet roads, paths, and signposted routes through diverse landscapes and historic towns to Rosslyn Chapel and then to Edinburgh. ...

Length: 58 km

This great pilgrimage way starts with quiet roads leading from Motherwell town centre and cathedral and then out into the countryside onto bleak moorland paths, river tracks, and canals footpaths. Historic gems like William Wallace's cave, Abercorn church and Hopetoun House along the way. Don't miss the famous Ladywell in ...

Length: 146 km

The route from Aberdeen to St Andrews forms the second part of an expanded route which starts at Tain (Gaelic: Baile Dubhthaich, 'Duthac's town'), the shrine of St Duthac there being another former pilgrimage destination of some importance, hence ‘St Duthac’s Way’.

Length: 16km

Length: 100 km

St Margaret’s Way starts from the centre of Edinburgh, taking you on bike paths and quiet roads to the Forth Road Bridge, then spectacular scenic coastal tracks and former pilgrim trails through local communities, to the famous ancient town of St Andrews, with a total distance of about 100 km.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

2024 Masters TV schedule, coverage, live stream, channel, how to watch streaming online, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 masters on tv or streaming live.

2024-masters-flag-schedule-g.jpg

The most wonderful time of the golf season reaches its conclusion Sunday as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters started as a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world and Scottie Scheffler entering as the favorite. Scheffler held that same position entering Round 4 and has only increased his advantage as the Masters rolls ot a finish.

Scheffler is looking to become the 10th golfer in Masters history to win two green jackets in a three-year span, and given his level of play over the last two years, no one is doubting he can accomplish his goal. Should he do so, he would pick up a $3.6 million winner's check out of a record  2024 Masters prize money allotment -- a $20 million purse .

While five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament, he completely ejected on Saturday with his worst score in a major championship round. Tiger rebounded Sunday while playing his 100th round at Augusta National  but nevertheless signed for a 16 over, his worst score to par at a major and the second-worst round overall across his professional career. (At least he wasn't among the major stars who missed the cut .)

Be sure to follow Masters live leaderboard coverage throughout the final round on Sunday for scores, analysis and highlights. It's a perfect second-screen complement to the Masters viewing experience provided to you by CBS.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

CBS Sports offers extensive, week-long coverage across all its platforms with its traditional 18-hole broadcast coverage beginning with the third round on Saturday and final-round action on Sunday. Jim Nantz, in his 39th consecutive year covering the Masters, serves as host for the 37th time. 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman joins Nantz as the lead analyst at the Masters for the second time. Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much Masters as possible on Sunday. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and download the CBS Sports app  to watch Masters Live on your mobile device.
