Your Five Step Guide to Planning a Train Trip

If you’re planning a train weekend getaway or a longer cross country adventure chances are you have some questions about Amtrak travel. Questions like, where can I find the best deal, how many bags can I bring, what’s the nearest station to me? We totally get it. We’re not like our buddies that soar through the sky, so customer questions are common.  You are not alone!

We’re always happy to answer questions about what train travel is really like. But first, here’s a quick guide to some of our most frequently asked questions. Read on, and if you have more questions, just ask us here !

Step 1: Decide on a Point B (or C, or D, etc.) Deciding on a location can be difficult. Do you want to see the ocean , mountains, quaint towns or cityscapes ? With over 500 destinations, narrowing it down can be a little daunting, but definitely exciting. But before you lock down a spot, we recommend heading over to our 500 destinations page to read all about the cities we travel to and hear recommendations of what to do when you get there.

Step 2: Learn the Route Amtrak trains crisscross the country running on over 30 routes . But sometimes getting you from point A to point B looks a lot different than you think. So to get a better understanding of our routes and where they travel, make sure to take a peek at our Travel Planning Map . Just put in your city of origin and your destination, then sit back and see where the train can take you .

Step 3: Discounts and Deals Now that you have a destination and you know your route, it’s time to see if there are any deals or discounts that apply to you. We offer everyday discounts on travel for children, students and more. There are also regional deals on travel with us. Deals like saving 25% on travel in the Northeast or saving 30% on travel on the Amtrak Cascades. Step 4: Baggage 101 Here’s the deal. Can you choose your seat?

While choosing your own seat beforehand is still not available for most Amtrak trips (an outdated practice Amtrak needs to change), however you can usually choose your own seat, or at least ask to move if the conductor seats you somewhere you don’t like, when you bard the train. Conductors usually assign coach seating at the time of boarding on long-distance trains. Some state-supported services and Northeast Corridor services allow you to choose your own seat once you board. Also there are no middle seats on any of the trains!

Amtrak also offers a variety of food options onboard:

Dining Cars: Full-service dining cars are found on long-distance routes, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu often includes regional specialties, vegetarian options, and a children's menu. Sleeping accommodation passengers receive complimentary meals.

Café Lounge Cars: Open throughout the journey, café cars offer casual dining with snacks, sandwiches, salads, and beverages, including local wines and craft beers. These are available on basically every route in the system, short and long-distance.

Room Service: Those with Sleeper accommodations can always have their meals served directly to their room. Again free of charge.

Plan An Amtrak Vacation: Everything You Need To Know

There are several pitfalls we want to help you avoid when you plan an Amtrak vacation. We’ve planned over 30 of them for our family, and have learned many hard lessons along the way! In this guide we will plan a sample vacation to show you exactly how we do it.

Deciding Where To Go On An Amtrak Vacation

The first obstacle you’ll face when planning an Amtrak vacation is deciding where to go. The Amtrak map can be confusing since all of the routes are the same color on the map. We recommend planning your trip using named trains and using as few as possible. Each time you switch routes you’ll need to board a new train and possibly stay overnight.

On our custom Amtrak system map, each route is color coded so you’ll know exactly where they start and stop. To see more in depth maps of each region go to our maps page .

The easiest way to plan a trip is to locate a station nearest to your home and see what routes are available.

For instance, if you live in New Orleans, you could take the Sunset Limited (Yellow), City of New Orleans (Orange) or Crescent (Purple). Our map shows you how far you could go before switching trains.

Once you’ve reached the end of the route you can simply fly home, or take a few other routes to get back.

In this example we’ll take the Sunset Limited (Yellow) from New Orleans to Los Angeles, then the Southwest Chief (Red) from Los Angeles to Chicago, and the City of New Orleans (Orange) from Chicago back to New Orleans.

What Type of Train Will You Be On

After you determine your route, you should look at what type of train it will be, and what services are offered on that train. Most overnight routes west of Chicago are Superliner trains, and routes that go to New York are Viewliner trains.

Superliner trains are double decker where Viewliner trains are a single level. You’ll have more headroom on a Viewliner as the cabins are taller, but Superlier trains are the only ones with observation cars.

Each route only has one type of train, so if you prefer a different type of train, you’ll need to pick a different route.

Which Type of Ticket Should You Buy

No matter which type of Amtrak ticket you buy, the goal should be to purchase it as early as possible. Unless you get lucky and they run a sale right as you are about to purchase, you’ll always save money by buying your ticket as early as possible.

The first tickets sold on each train are the cheapest. As the train fills the price goes up. Once the train is almost full, the tickets are usually more than double the cost of the first ticket sold.

If you can plan your trip out months in advance you’ll save a considerable amount of money.

If you opt to ride in coach class, you’ll have a comfortable seat to ride and sleep in. You won’t sleep quite as well as in a sleeper cabin though, as other passenger getting on and off may wake you up. Your seat won’t lie completely flat either. If you are choosing to ride in a sleeper car, you be picking either a roomette, or a bedroom, unless you are traveling with children, or need an accessible room.

Families of four should opt for the family bedroom, as it will save money over 2 roomettes, and you can be together. The children’s beds are short in this cabin so it is not recommended for teenagers.

If you need an accessible room, both types of trains have them available, but they are the most in demand room on Amtrak and are hard to find. They will show up in an online search if available, but they rarely do.

The choice between a Roomette and a Bedroom comes down to cost. Without question, the Bedroom is the better way to go if cost is not a consideration, but for most people, including us, it is. We usually book a roomette when riding overnight.

Roomettes are half the size of a bedroom, but are comfortable and private. If you don’t mind a tighter space, this is a big savings. You’ll still have the same meal choices as a Bedroom.

In our sample trip we’ll book Roomettes for all three legs or our trip.

How To Book Your Amtrak Tickets

The first thing you should do when booking for an Amtrak vacation is log into your Amtrak Guest Rewards account on Amtrak.com. If you don’t have one yet, sign up for one so you’ll start earning points.

In our sample vacation we want to spend 3 nights in both Los Angeles and Chicago before returning to New Orleans. It is important when purchasing your tickets that you take into account the nights you’ll be sleeping on the train.

For reference, I’m booking this trip for 2 people 4 months in advance. We’ll leave from New Orleans on January 29.

Once you’ve found a date with a good price, in this case $729, click the Rooms From tab and you’ll see your choices.

We will book the Roomette, since the Bedroom was over $1,400. It is usually around double the price.

We usually book all the trains before getting the hotels, because there is more choice in hotels, and it is easier to move dates on those.

Next up is the Southwest Chief.

Always pick the named train, even if mixed service is cheaper. Mixed service means you’ll be on a bus and have extra connections.

We’ve selected these hotels because they are close to the station, and avoid using cabs and Uber as much as possible.

Will Food Be Included In Your Ticket

If you are riding in a sleeper car on your Amtrak vacation, your meals will be included. We still recommend you bring a few snacks. Depending on your route you’ll either get traditional dining or flexible dining . Most overnight cross country routes now have the more desirable traditional dining.

Getting To The Amtrak Station

Amtrak Stations are not generally near the airport. We usually end up taking an Uber to the station if we have flown into town or if our hotel is not near the station. The other reason we do this is to avoid parking a car at the station long term.

Thus, enjoying the onboard food is also rewarding. But those wishing to save money must bring their own food, water, and beverages (alcoholic stock as per Amtrak guidelines). Passengers can eat their food and non-alcoholic beverages in their seats, in their personal Sleeping Cars, and in the Sightseer Lounges. Nevertheless, they can only enjoy private stock in their Sleeping Car accommodations.

Book Amtrak Tickets In Advance & Purchase In The First "Buckets"

Amtrak offers a distinctive way to purchase train tickets that works well for early-bird tourists. Amtrak offers tickets in 'buckets,' with the lowest rates going on sale first, as opposed to the dynamic pricing matrix used by the majority of airlines. The next bucket, with a higher ticket price, is opened up after the allowed number of tickets for that price in the bucket has been sold out.

It is also preferable to schedule a trip as soon as travelers can because inexpensive tickets on busy days sell out the quickest (this is especially true for the most popular and busiest Amtrak routes ). Travelers should know that all dining car meals, free bottles of water, hot showers, soft drinks with ice, and hot coffee are all included in their reservations. A special sleeping car attendant will also be assigned to them.

Travelers should make sure to tip the sleeping car attendant.

Maps Show Passenger Trains in US vs. Europe?

On April 15, 2024, a Facebook page titled The sound of Train posted an image of two maps purporting to compare passenger train lines in the United States and Europe ( archived ):

The post had gained 117,000 reactions, 21,800 comments and 44,000 reshares as of this writing. The same image appeared on Reddit in 2023, and also went viral. "In Germany, trains are used even for [sic] go from bathroom to kitchen," one user quipped.

Although the maps conveyed a generally accurate impression of the differences in size and density between the U.S. passenger train system and Europe's, the U.S. map did not include all regional and commuter passenger train lines, so the comparison was slightly unbalanced. The European map was an accurate representation of reality.

It is true that, compared to Europe, the U.S.'s passenger train system is underdeveloped. More accurately, it has been severely degraded over the decades, as many lines across the country have fallen into disuse since the 1960s, according to a 2019 post by The Greater Greater Washington (a website that advocates for better urbanization in the Washington, D.C., area) based on data from the National Association of Rail Passengers .

In the same period, Europe opened many new passenger train lines at the city and regional level, connecting large cities within countries and even across borders. In 1981 , the French government opened Europe's first high-speed train line between Paris and Lyon. That technology expanded across the continent with AVE , connecting major cities in Spain, and the Eurostar , which connects London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. As of 2024, trains of all speeds connected Munich to Prague, Marseille to Barcelona, and Vienna to Rome.

The U.S. map in the image accurately shows Amtrak's map of trains, which we found on  Amtrak's website . Amtrak is a national network of trains that connect cities over long distances.

Meanwhile, we compared the viral European map to national railroad maps and realized that it includes not only long-distance lines, but also regional ones. In part, that is why that map has considerably more lines compared to the U.S.'s.

In other words, a fair comparison between the two systems would include all regional U.S. lines such as the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North (the nation's largest networks with a combined 136 million rides each year); the NJ Transit Rail Operations , which links New York City to Philadelphia, and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority — better known as  SEPTA — around Philadelphia. Other such lines include Caltrain around San Francisco and Denver's  RTD .

Even when it was most used in the 1910s and 1920s , America's passenger train network  displayed stark differences  between regions. Eastern cities are closer, denser, and more amenable to railroad connection, while, in the west, agglomerations are more distant from each other. Still, travelers used the train widely a century ago . 

All of this changed starting in 1929 due to multiple reasons: First, the Wall Street crash of 1929 sparked the Great Depression, which made mid-and long-distance travel less affordable to people with economic problems. At the same time, Ford Motor Company brought the mass production of cars to the market, and, by that year, 23 million automobiles were on the road for a population of 123 million people. The subsequent urbanization changed the transportation market, making it more convenient for households to own one or more cars. Then came airplane travel. Little by little, the U.S. economy deprioritized the train system.

But the success of local and regional train lines in the northeast of the U.S. might provide a clue to the evolving transportation needs of the country. Experts say creating pedestrian-friendly streets and roads and investing in public transportation helps  decongest cities and highways. U.S. President Joe Biden announced in late 2023 a plan to develop new train lines and technology, including high-speed rail for passengers. 

Meanwhile, in Europe, low-cost airlines have upended the train market. While many passengers would   rather travel by rail , the costs of train tickets are often higher  compared to widely accessible plane tickets. There, too, European politicians are  seeking solutions to make train travel more attractive than air travel to most passengers.

Survey: 1 in 3 American travelers plan to go into debt for vacations

Perhaps your summers hold fond memories of strolling along the beach, hiking mountains or trying new foods at a destination hundreds of miles from home. If so, are you planning to keep the travel streak going this year? Would you go into debt for it?

A new Bankrate survey found that only about half (53 percent) of Americans are planning a summer vacation in 2024. Of those who plan to travel this summer, more than 1 in 3 (36 percent) are willing to go into debt to pay for it.

On the other hand, another half (47 percent) of Americans plan to skip their summer vacation this year, citing affordability as the main issue (65 percent).

Some summer travelers plan to take on debt for their vacation.

More than one-third (36 percent) of aspiring summer vacationers said in the survey that they plan to use debt to pay for their travels.

This is par for the course when compared to another March 2024 Bankrate survey that asked Americans whether they’d go into debt to pay for fun this year. In that survey, 27 percent said they’d be willing to go into debt to travel, 14 percent to dine out and 13 percent to attend a live entertainment event this year overall — not just in the summer.

Ted Rossman, Bankrate Senior Industry Analyst, cautions against racking up expensive credit card debt.

“I don’t want to tell people they can’t have any fun, but I do worry about taking on debt for discretionary purchases such as vacations, especially with credit card balances and rates at record highs,” he says.

A majority of summer travelers will pay with a credit card.

Credit cards are summer travelers’ preferred payment method — 62 percent will use a credit card for at least some of their trip expenses. Forty-three percent of summer travelers plan to use a credit card that they pay in full, and 26 percent plan to use a card and carry the balance over multiple billing cycles. Some people are doing both.

Interestingly, a January 2024 Bankrate survey found that, of the 44 percent of credit cardholders carrying debt from month to month, 2 in 3 cardholders try to maximize rewards. If you can pay your balance in full, a travel credit card is a great way to earn while you spend and put rewards toward future trips.

“There’s nothing like staying at The Jefferson ,” says Lemon. The 181-room historic property is the most regal hotel in Richmond, with a history that dates back to 1895. Upon entering the Palm Court lobby, your eyes are immediately drawn upward to the colorful stained glass ceiling; the impressive architecture continues throughout the common areas, most notably into the Rotunda. One of the dining areas for the popular Champagne Sunday Brunch (which requires reservations made well in advance), the Rotunda is outfitted with Corinthian columns, a resplendent staircase, and decor that harkens back to the Gilded Age.

There are touches of this design style in the traditionally decorated guest rooms and suites, but they don’t feel overly heavy or outdated, thanks to a full-scale renovation that took place from 2013 to 2017. To complete the experience, guests will want to dine at the hotel’s restaurant (and local favorite) Lemaire . “Be sure to order the peanut soup or the pimento cheese for a taste of Richmond,” says Jeanita Harris, The Jefferson’s director of guest services.   

Quirk Hotel 

Recommended by both Lemon and Martin, Quirk Hotel is the younger, more modern accommodation option in town. Opened in 2015, the property aims to be a destination “where art and history intersect.” That means you’ll find original artwork throughout the property (which was built as the J.B. Mosby & Co. Dry Goods Store in 1916) —  from the bright guest rooms to the on-site gallery. Before a big day of exploring Richmond, fuel up at The Coffee Bar, then return to The Lobby Bar or Q Rooftop Bar for pre-dinner cocktails. 

Graduate Richmond

Richmond may be a big city, but it’s also a college town. The University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, and Randolph Macon College are all located within the greater Richmond area, so it makes sense that the Graduate Hotels brand would have an outpost in the city. Along with its cozy rooms and a fitness center, Graduate Richmond has an outdoor pool, a rooftop cocktail bar, and an all-day café and bar.

Visiting Richmond’s museums is at the top of Martin’s must-do list. “Of course, start with The Valentine for your introduction to the region’s history,” he says, “Then the options are limitless: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , Virginia Museum of History & Culture , Maymont , Science Museum of Virginia , Children’s Museum of Richmond , The American Civil War Museum , and Agecroft Hall & Gardens .”

Spend a day along the glorious James River.

“The James River runs right through downtown,” says Harris, who adds that visitors can choose from the “excitement of class four rapids, a leisurely float down the river in a tube, or a hike along the miles of nature trails.” For rafting, tubing, and kayaking trips, check out Riverside Outfitters . Martin also suggests a more relaxing activity of simply “packing a lunch and finding a rock;” you’ll find a number of large picnic-perfect rocks around Belle Isle .

Take a tour of the Virginia State Capitol.

Free one-hour tours are offered throughout the week at the Virginia State Capitol, located in the aptly named Capitol District. “The tours are about 45 minutes long, and the knowledgeable docents provide a wonderful introduction to Richmond and Virginia history,” says Harris. Plus, she notes, it’s home to a life-size statue of George Washington, which is said to be one of the most accurate depictions of the historic figure. 

Discover local artists and musicians. 

Richmond’s creativity isn’t just relegated to one neighborhood or one category. Rather, it takes on a variety of shapes throughout the city. To admire and shop for locally made artwork, check out Art Works , Iridian Gallery (which focuses on works by LGBTQ+ artists), Arts in the Park (a free outdoor event that takes place in May), Eric Schindler Gallery , or the Crossroads Arts Center . Richmond’s music scene is equally diverse and impressive. To see which performances align with your travels, follow local venues — like The Camel , The Canal Club , or The Broadberry — and local bands and performers — including Cleophus James , Butcher Brown , and The Shack Band .

The Roosevelt

While Martin says pinpointing just one or two top Richmond restaurants is “impossible,” he does mention The Roosevelt (along with Grisette) is one of his neighborhood favorites. Here, Chef Leah Branch brings her own touch to Southern cuisine, with a menu consisting of delicacies like cornbread with whipped maple butter, fried catfish, and tobacco-smoked pork butt. 

There are regular cheese and charcuterie boards, and then there are the expertly curated cheese and charcuterie boards at Grisette . The thoughtful, cozy space is open for dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays, and reservations are recommended. Fair warning, though: You’ll want to avoid filling up on meats and cheeses. It’s crucial to save a bit of room for the fan-favorite profiteroles.  

“Located in the charming Church Hill neighborhood, this is a favorite recommendation for guests interested in seafood. The cocktails are tasty as well,” says Harris. Alewife ’s signature sampler platter, the Siren’s Song, is a classic, although the menu does change weekly. 

Floris at VMFA

After making your rounds through the VMFA’s exhibits — don’t miss the extensive Fabergé collection — it’ll be time for afternoon tea at Floris . The museum’s tearoom features a rotating menu that takes inspiration from the neighboring collections, and the atmosphere and structure are akin to a British afternoon tea. It’s elegant without being stuffy, and the $45 tea service comes with pastries, sweet treats, and savory bites. 

You’ll want to come hungry to Mama J’s , a family-owned restaurant in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Think fried chicken, crab cakes, pork chops, brisket sandwiches, and a whole host of delicious sides — macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and seafood salad included. 

“ Carytown is a favorite area for local shopping,” says Harris. The mile-long stretch of Cary St. is filled with various one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops — and you could spend hours popping in and out of the storefronts. “Guests always come back with lots of shopping bags from World of Mirth , Ten Thousand Villages , For The Love of Chocolate , Traveling Chic Boutique , and GlassBoat ,” she explains. 

Shops at Libbie and Grove

In Richmond’s West End neighborhood, you’ll find a collection of boutiques and gourmet eateries all located along Libbie, Grove, and Patterson Avenues. To update your wardrobe, there’s Nellie George , Peter-Blair , the Shops at 5807 , and Jean Theory . To refresh your home, browse the selections at Fraîche , Gild and Ash , and Beckon Home .

According to Harris, the best time of year to visit Richmond is the fall: “The weather is perfect for going to the river, [or] exploring the city by bicycle, Segway, or on foot.” Plus, she says, “The cooler temperatures also make for pleasant evenings out to enjoy Richmond’s vibrant nightlife.” Spring is also a beautiful time to visit; the daffodils, cherry blossoms, tulips, magnolias, and azaleas are blooming at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden — and you’ll be able to avoid summer’s muggy weather and larger crowds.

How to Get There 

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is one of the larger airports in the state of Virginia, and it’s served by nine major air carriers — including Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and United. The airport is only about 10 miles from downtown Richmond, so travelers should factor in about a 15- to 20-minute drive between the two. Uber and Lyft rides are readily available for pickup. Alternatively, Richmond is home to two Amtrak stations; the Main Street Station is located downtown while the Staples Mill Road Station is eight miles northwest of downtown (you’ll need to take a cab to get into the city). 

“Richmond is a city of neighborhoods,” says Martin, and Lemon adds that it’s important for travelers to “go into the local neighborhoods, talk to the people [who] have lived there for a long time, see the architecture, [and] see the local businesses that have been there for years.” 

Church Hill

“Church Hill is home to St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry gave his famous ‘Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death’ speech, and the architecture and attractions take you back in time,” says Harris. If you’re hungry while in the area, snag a freshly baked treat at Sub Rosa Bakery . 

Jackson Ward

Jackson Ward, a historically Black neighborhood in Richmond, is filled with important cultural and historical markers — including the home of Maggie L. Walker (the country’s first Black female bank president), the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia , and a statue of American tap dancer Bill Robinson. Cuisine in the area is also first-rate, so definitely add Adarra , Mama J’s, and Penny’s Wine Shop to your trip itinerary. 

Scott’s Addition

If you’re interested in a brewery crawl, there’s only one place to go: Scott’s Addition . The area is packed with taprooms, cideries, and distilleries — most of which are located in repurposed warehouses. Consider starting your tour at Bingo Beer Co. , Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop , or Three Notch'd Brewing .

The Fan District

“The Fan, given its name by the streets that ‘fan out,’ is filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and museums,” says Harris. It’s in this part of the city where you’ll find the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, as well as Monument Avenue, the picturesque boulevard featuring stunning homes and the Arthur Ashe Monument (Ashe was a native of Richmond.)

Manchester 

“Another area to explore is Manchester along Hull Street. This neighborhood has its own unique history and is one of the fastest-growing parts of the city with local food favorites like Croaker’s Spot ,” says Martin. 

Brookland Park Boulevard

“I would also recommend exploring the Brookland Park Boulevard (Barton Heights and Highland Park) area,” says Martin. “In these early streetcar neighborhoods, you will find great architecture, history, and small local businesses and restaurants — don’t miss Ruby Scoop’s Ice Cream !”

There are a few ways to explore Richmond. Having a car is helpful, particularly if you plan to cover a lot of ground in one day (just be prepared to test your parallel parking skills). Biking is also a great way to get around the city; Riverside Cycling and The Kickstand both offer half-day and full-day rentals. 

There’s also the local bus system, operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company, and the GRTC Pulse route is an excellent option for visitors. The “high-capacity bus rapid transit system,” as it’s called, serves a nearly eight-mile route along Main Street and Broad Street. It stops at 14 key destinations, like Scott’s Addition, the Science Museum, and VCU. Find the full route and schedule here . It is currently free to ride.

Help! Megabus Canceled My Trip but Won’t Refund the Booking Fee.

A traveler spent $53.98 to reserve a bus ride from Philadelphia to Boston. But the company canceled the trip and returned only $49.99, prompting an 18-month fight over a principle.

Dear Tripped Up,

On Oct. 3, 2022, I reserved a seat in a Megabus coach for the busy Sunday after Thanksgiving to return to Boston after visiting family in Philadelphia. With a $3.99 booking fee, the total came to $53.98. On Oct. 26, I received an email from Megabus canceling the trip “due to a schedule alteration,” and promising a refund. But I only received $49.99. I wrote every few months demanding my $3.99 back, receiving no response until nearly a year later, when an agent named Danielle wrote back to explain that the service fee was nonrefundable. I understand why a company would keep a fee if I had canceled or rebooked, but this was their decision. Can you help? Gabriel, Boston

Dear Gabriel,

This may be small potatoes compared with typical Tripped Up fare, but no one likes getting nickeled and dimed and $3.99-ed with fees that seem arbitrarily designed to pad companies’ bottom lines. In this maddening case, you didn’t even get the service you paid for and still paid the service fee. Considering the effort you put into this sub-$4 quest, I suspect you care more about the principle than the money.

When I reached out to Megabus, Meghan O’Hare, a spokeswoman for Megabus and its parent company, Coach USA, was unwilling to discuss your request or return the service fee. “Unfortunately, we do not comment on the details of interactions with customers,” she wrote in an email.

Luckily, we have the details, thanks to the mostly one-way email string you forwarded to me. After you sent four emails between November 2022 and September 2023, you finally received a response from Megabus on Sept. 22, one day after you threatened “to file a formal complaint” with the U.S. Department of Transportation. (Good move!)

“The $3.99 booking fee is a nonrefundable charge that is associated with completing a booking that you agreed to by accepting our terms and conditions on our website,” wrote Danielle, a member of the customer-support team. “Unfortunately, that amount won’t be added when totaling the value toward refunds.”

When I wrote back to Ms. O’Hare to confirm this was company policy and to ask what the service fee actually went toward, she did not respond.

You did not end up filing a complaint with the Transportation Department, because when you got in touch with the agency, an official there pointed you to federal regulations that do not appear to require the return of fees for canceled intercity bus trips. (The Biden administration’s recent announcement that it would require airlines and travel agents to disclose fees “the first time that fare and schedule information is provided” do not apply to bus trips. Megabus and its competitors add fees late in the booking process.)

So that leaves us with only Megabus’s terms and conditions, which mention a “$3.99 nonrefundable booking fee” levied “to cover administration charges related to your reservation,” and note that if a customer changes a reservation, this fee is not returned and, in fact, charged again. There is no mention of what happens to the fee if the company itself cancels a trip.

Jeff Sovern, a professor of consumer protection law at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, told me in an email that if “the contract is ambiguous, the ambiguity is construed to benefit the party that accepted the contract — here, the consumer.” But, he added, “I don’t know if a court would buy that interpretation.” And taking Megabus to court for $3.99 might nudge your already quirky quest into tilting-at-windmills territory.

Chris Elliott, the consumer advocate who has helped many travelers through his nonprofit, Elliott Advocacy , suggested a simpler solution for consumers in a similar situation: a credit card chargeback. “Banks take a dim view of these kind of shenanigans,” he wrote. (Since chargebacks usually have to be initiated in 60 to 120 days, this advice applies more to others than to you.)

So why would Megabus keep an administrative fee when it has inconvenienced a customer by not providing a service?

I suppose you could argue that it did incur some costs to schedule the route in the first place and, perhaps, by processing your credit card order. But it’s hard to see how that’s your problem.

Even companies whose business model revolves around booking fees often promise to return those fees if a service is not provided. Both Ticketmaster and Broadway.com specify in their terms and conditions that they refund those fees if a concert or event or show is canceled.

At least two of Megabus’s major competitors do return service fees. Flixbus, which owns Greyhound, provides “the full amount of the ticket fare(s), including any fees,” according to its terms and conditions .

Trailways’ terms and conditions are vaguer. But Alex Berardi, the president of Trailways.com (Trailways’ ticketing and sales platform) told me that when a trip is canceled through no fault of the passengers, “We’re going to get them that money back and that includes the fee.”

“It’s just good customer service,” he said, adding that fewer than 0.75 percent of trips by Trailways carriers are canceled, more than half of those because of weather.

Mr. Berardi also noted that through an agreement between the two companies, you can book Megabus seats on Trailways.com and be protected by Trailways terms and conditions.

Amtrak, in case you are wondering, does not charge a booking fee. And no need to dive into the airlines’ labyrinthine conditions of carriage, since the Transportation Department clearly requires them to refund “the ticket price and/or associated fees” when they cancel a flight.

Guess who else returns service fees? Megabus in Britain. The company, which has been under different ownership since 2019, refunds “the fare and transaction fees,” if it cannot provide suitable alternative transportation, according to its terms and conditions .

Gabriel, you told me that prices had gone up for bus and train fares from Philadelphia to Boston by the time Megabus canceled your trip.

Luckily, thanks to a flexible work schedule, you were able to leave on Tuesday and fly back from Philadelphia on a JetBlue flight you booked with 5,000 miles (worth about $65, according to a 2022 Points Guy valuation ), and a $5.60 fee. Total that up, tack on the lost $3.99 Megabus fee, and you ended up out somewhere around $25.

If you are anything like me, you easily made up for your losses with Thanksgiving leftovers consumed at your relatives’ house Sunday through Tuesday. So they’re the ones that should really be mad at Megabus.

LUPTON, Ariz. (AP) — A freight train carrying fuel derailed and caught fire Friday near the Arizona-New Mexico state line, forcing the closure of an interstate highway that serves as a key trucking route.

Initial passersby posted video and photos on social media of crumpled train cars and billowing, black smoke.

No injuries were reported in the midday train wreck near Lupton, Arizona. BNSF Railway spokesperson Lena Kent said company personnel were on site working to clear the wreckage. Kent said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Interstate 40 was closed by authorities in both directions in the area in the early afternoon, directing trucks and motorists off the freeway to alternate routes, New Mexico State Police and the Arizona Department of Public Safety announced.

The train was transporting non-odorous propane and gasoline, and a half-dozen rail cars caught fire and burned for hours after the derailment, New Mexico State Police Lt. Phil Vargas said.

“It looks like they’re just letting those (rail) cars burn themselves out,” Vargas said.

Nearby residences and a truck stop were evacuated as a precaution as winds carried away thick smoke and local firefighting crews responded. The derailment also led Amtrak to cancel some passenger travel, including on the route between Los Angeles and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Traffic on I-40 backed up for more than 10 miles, though detours were opened on two-lane roads and highways, said Kristine Bustos-Mihelcic, a spokesperson for the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The agency warned Friday evening of an extended highway closure that would increase traffic on other interstate highways, including I-25 and I-10.

The Arizona Corporation Commission that oversees railroad safety said in a social media post on X that 10 rail cars were involved in the derailment and that two were transporting liquid petroleum. The agency said it planned to send a railroad inspector to the site but later learned the derailment happened on the New Mexico side of the tracks.
