Parry Sound Plane Tours over Georgian Bay in Ontario
First encounter with Georgian Bay
Georgian Bay Airways and Parry Sound Plane Tours
We are invited by Georgian Bay Airways for a scenic flight over the 30000 islands with lunch at Henry's Restaurant, a seafood restaurant. This is on one of the outer islands of the archipelago and can only be reached by seaplane or boat. Actually, we had hoped that the autumn coloring of the forests was a little more advanced. But it's not particularly intense in these northern regions of Ontario in late September. In the meantime, some trees are shining red or yellow out of the woods, but the peak of the coloring of the leaves can probably only be expected after our departure at the beginning of October.
But what's the point? A seaplane flight is also a great experience in summer. And the weather cooperates. Deep blue skies and bright sunshine! What more do we want?
A flight over the 30000 islands
The crew of Georgian Bay Airways welcomes us in their small terminal at the port of Parry Sound, which is the departure point for day trippers and cottage owners on the 30000 islands. The "deckhand" is a young man who is responsible for everything that needs to be done before departure. He takes care of the refueling of the aircraft, care and maintenance of the machines, etc. He then leads us over the swaying jetty to our aircraft. Having flown seaplanes many times in Alaska and the Yukon, I am amazed at how small these planes are on Georgian Bay. However, if you consider that this does not necessarily have to be used to transport food for a whole year, as is often necessary in the far north of the country, then it makes sense to use smaller aircraft in these regions.
Georgian Bay Airways crew
Four people are supposed to fly on our flight: the two of us, the pilot – James Ferguson – and his co-pilot Steve, who, as a newcomer to the region, is supposed to get to know the route. There is not much space in the machine, but it is enough to get an overview of the water and island world below us. And photography and filming is also possible.
Parry Sound Plane Tours provide an overview of the island world
After takeoff, we first look for deeper fairways for the takeoff, because with a fully fueled aircraft and four people on board we can't take off straight away from the harbor bay - due to the heavy weight. Then we start with a view of the open lake. James takes off at full throttle, the engine accelerating, and the outer suburbs of Parry Sound and the salt mounds already ready for the coming winter in the port regions whiz past us faster and faster. When the sea is calm you don't get much of the actual take-off in a seaplane. Suddenly you are in the air with a fantastic view of the world below of deep forests, small lakes and ponds and streams separating large and small islands.
Villas and Cottages in the Georgian Bay Islands
Only from the air do we get an impression of the size of the island world that characterizes the southeast corner of Georgian Bay. There are literally thousands of islands here - some so large that they can accommodate large villas with tennis courts and swimming pools, others are no more than a small rock sticking out of the water's surface. However, the islands with large estates can be counted on one hand. Small cottages and wooden houses are much more common on the 30000 Islands than the posh mansions of the rich city dwellers in Canada.
Soft landing in front of Henry's Restaurant
On the way we are shaken by slight turbulence, so it is not easy to take photos that are not blurred. It is even more difficult to shoot short films in which the image is not distorted by sudden flight movements. But we hardly notice our landing in front of Henry's Restaurant, the seaplane dives so gently into the calm waters of the lake. It will take some time before we arrive at the jetty - the propellers must not remain switched on here. Aircraft noise should be avoided as far as possible, because there are a few summer cottages right next to the landing stage.
An island world almost to ourselves on our Parry Sound Plane Tour
Arriving at the jetty we see a number of jetties that are likely to be teeming with boats in the summer. However, we are only here a few days before Henry's closes for the winter and we are the only guests. A very special feeling to have the island world of the 30000 islands almost to ourselves.
Summary of our Parry Sound Plane Tour:
We have discovered this beautiful region at the east end of Lake Huron in Canada, which has a unique archipelago of 30000 islands. She totally amazed us!
The best part? We got a bird's eye view of Georgian Bay! We took a Georgian Bay Airways Parry Sound Plane Tour and flew over the islands in a seaplane. We were lucky enough to have lunch at Henry's Restaurant on one of the outer islands of the archipelago.
The flight was an unforgettable experience. We flew on a small seaplane that seats four including the pilot and his co-pilot. The island world that passed below us was breathtaking. There was everything from small rocks to large villas. The autumn colors of the forests were particularly intense, but the flight is also a great experience in summer.
The Georgian Bay Airways crew was very friendly and the landing in front of Henry's Restaurant was so smooth we barely noticed it. Once there, we almost had the island world to ourselves, as the restaurant closes shortly after for the winter.
Don't miss the Georgian Bay Islands by Air!
If you have a penchant for nature and adventure, you should definitely experience this unique island world from a bird's eye view. Fly over the 30000 Islands with Georgian Bay Airways and enjoy the beauty of this region. It is an unforgettable experience that you should not miss!

Excellent float plane trip!
I booked my parents onto the Sunset Champagne flight as a surprise for their anniversary whilst we were visiting Muskoka from the UK. During the booking process the administrative staff were friendly, helpful and excellent. It has always been a dream of my father's to go on a float plane and the experience far surpassed his expectations. Alan was a great pilot and my parents loved every minute of it. I would highly recommend Georgian Bay Airways and I hope to fly with them again soon!
We had a fantastic day. Our pilot Sam flew us to the Ridge at Manitou and it was an awesome experience. Sam gave us a fantastic commentary of the lakes area. Thefkiggt was a fantastic experience and something very Canadian to do while we were visiting. We would highly recommend this experience.
We recently went on the fly and fish tour (July 18,2018) Thanks to our pilot Keith for a excellent experience, the flight was gorgeous and the fishing was great, we had a beautiful peaceful day by ourselves on the lake, we caught some nice pike, pickerel and small mouth bass. Keith did a great job of setting us up and making sure we were set for the day. I would recommend the experience to anyone who's looking for something different to try. Thanks again !!
We have been taking this tour annually for years and it is always such a wonderful experience. Can't say enough good things about the Management and staff of Georgian Bay Airways................. love you all will keep coming back. Summer and fall and will recommend you to all our friends. Will soon be able to start bringing the grandkids to enjoy Henry's !!
Wonderful....So happy to hear we have repeat customers! Fall is an amazing time to see the colours of this beautiful area. We look forward to flying with you again and your grandkids! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
We were driving back to Toronto after visiting a friend in sudbury and called into Parry Sound for a coffee, A seaplane journey has been something that i have always wanted to do so this was a perfect opportunity to do it, so myself and my husband did the 30.000 islands trip and it was fantastic our pilot Alex was very knowledgable on the area and habitat and clearly has a passion for his job and he made our trip a treasured memory
My wife and I had a 40 minute flight to see 12 Mile Bay and then out to the islands on the flight back. Jessie was very knowledgeable and could identify things for us from the air making it very meaningful.

The food is hit and miss but the service and view is very good. Great on a summer day.
Came into town looking for a nice sit down restaurant, I was told by a local to try this place so went with a friend. We were greeted very quickly as it wasn't very busy, the waitress was excellent , and the environment was catered for small town lakeside pardon the wires they tried to hide with fake vines. I got the pickerel it was ok but small portion and very boney which was to be expected my girlfriend got the brisket sandwich which was dry and tasteless. So yes you should go here for the Parry sound experience if your looking for a great view of the lake and would like to see the sea planes taking off and landing but don't go if your hungry luckily had snacks in the car.
Have enjoyed eating here several times before. Tonight we arrived at 8:40 after a long drive from the US. They said they couldn't serve us because the kitchen was backed up and they close at 9 pm. Very disappointing. Fortunately, a place across the street, Turtle Jack's, which also closes at 9, was willing to feed us. Don't count on getting served near closing time at Tailwinds. It's hard to find anything but pizza after 9 pm in Parry Sound even in the summer. A charming town, however.
The restaurant just opened so the menu was limited and they are waiting for a liquor license, but the dishes we had were great. Garlic shrimp with rice was excellent and the fries were crispy. Can't wait to see what comes on the regular menu. Staff was super friendly.
A few family members and I came to Flight Deck on a trip to Parry Sound for groceries for the cabin. After recently talking about how restaurants on Bay St. have gone down hill, we came here seeing it was new...and hopefully better than the others. It was! Much to our pleasure. Small, clean, casual. Friendly and attentive staff. Nice view for the planes taking off and landing for the Georgian Bay tour flights. This is one of the only place in The Georgian Bay/Parry Sound area that has a menu item that specifically has a vegan option!! This was thrilling to me. It was a pulled "pork" sandwich, done brilliantly with jack fruit. Great flavor and texture with an amazing pickled coleslaw on top. Huge serving and an enormous amount of fries. Very happy and will return when up.
Went in for dinner. Stood at the hostess stand for several minutes as multiple employees walked by, no one addressing us. Finally were seated inside, no server came by. We asked to be moved outside where we sat for over 15 minutes more with no one welcoming us or even taking our drink order. We asked a passing staff member to help locate our server. Waited a while longer and nothing. We got up and left. The place was not that crowded and there were staff members everywhere. Very disappointed, however the limited menu did not look that exciting anyway.
Just had a delicious, fun lunch at The Flight Deck Grill. The haddock and chips were very good. They just got the okay to serve beer and wine. We sat outside on their new patio and watched big and small boats come and go and seaplanes taxi out and take off right in front of us...is that fun or what ? Small menu but what they do is delicious. Our waiter was great even though we were in the far corner of the patio. There is a walk-up ice cream bar attached to this combination seaplane terminal/restaurant. For a nice afternoon watching the water, birds, boats and planes while sipping a beer, should try The Flight Deck.
Came here tonight for a nice dinner with my grandparents (they came here a few weeks ago and loved it!). We were disappointed to find out that the Pickerel was sold out however we were happy to select something different. Our table had the shrimp cocktail and the lobster toast to begin. The shrimp were very good though a bit small for $13. The lobster toast was great and very generous. We all had the fish and chips and agreed that it was a great meal! Unfortunately the same could not be said for our server Laura. From the moment we sat down she was rushed and appeared overwhelmed. She also had poor (if any) manners - when asked for side plates she dropped baskets on our table and replied "we don't have side plates here", she reached in front of my face multiple times with no apologies and did not check to see if we needed anything once our food arrived (we helped ourselves to cutlery). We would come back for the food and atmosphere but would request a different server.
Had the fish and chips and enjoyed it very much. Nice patio on the harbor to take in the surroundings

TRAINING FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS
To obtain a Float Endorsement (Seaplane Rating) on your foreign pilot’s licence you are required to have either a “Foreign Licence Validation Certificate” or a Canadian Private Pilot Licence that is issued on the “Basis of your foreign Private Pilot Licence”, as issued from Transport Canada. Georgian Bay Airways can help you obtain the FLVC document to conduct your training with us. This does not allow you to work as a pilot in Canada. Once you have completed training with GBA, will will provide you with copies of the documents you need to take to your Aviation Authority to have the Seaplane Rating added to your existing licence.
My wife and I had a 40 minute flight to see 12 Mile Bay and then out to the islands on the flight back. Jessie was very knowledgeable and could identify things for us from the air making it very meaningful.

seaplane rating - Georgian Bay Airways Ltd.
Seaplane rating.
Last summer I decided to do a seaplane rating in Canada. I eventually chose Georgian Bay Airways. The instruction was first class. The instructors were professional yet relaxed and both the ground and the flight training were thorough and practical. The office staff were friendly and helpful. There are two Cessna 180s used for instruction, great machines to fly. The whole operation seemed to be very well run. The base at Parry Sound is ideal. On the water there is plenty of room to manoeuver and the airspace around is completely open. Instruction begins right from the dock. The bays and inlets along the coast together with the countless lakes inland offer endless opportunities to practice take-offs and landings. All in all I found the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable. I would recommend Georgian Bay Airways to anyone considering doing a seaplane rating in Canada.
Hi Howard, Thanks for the kind endorsement (pun intended) of our float training program. We work really hard behind the scenes to be up to date on the most effective teaching techniques out there. Nicole and I believe that surrounding yourself with good-natured, diligent professionals will help you in any field! I'll pass along your kinds words to our crew. Cheers Keith
We emailed before we left the UK, as their website had said they were closed for the season. They responded immediately to say that they were still doing a few trips and that they could fit us in. Unfortunately our chosen date was very windy and so we rebooked to fly on 23rd October 2014 - a wonderfully bright and sunny day. The trip is well worth the cost (just under £85 per person at current exchange rates). Everyone at Georgian Bay was very professional and enthuastic and I would thoroughly recommend flying with them. Don't forget to stroke Berkeley, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever before you leave!
Thank you for understanding our October winds. Sometimes, when they come off Georgian Bay in late Fall, they can pack quite a punch! Berkley is almost a year now and still greets people with her smiling face! She is an amazing addition to the team. I'll update her picture here shortly. Cheers Keith
Take a ride on their seaplane. We didn't book in advance, we just showed up. We had to wait 45 minutes, there are some restaurants across the street so we just had lunch till it was time to go up. The view was amazing!
Thank you for your patience! I hope that it was worth your time. Georgian Bay's rugged coastline is truly something to witness! Cheers Keith
Highly recommend to view the islands of the Georgian Bay by air. The views are spectacular and it's definitively worth the money. Pilot and other staff were very friendly and professional.
Isn't Fall in Parry Sound just an amazing experience? As soon as the trees start pulling the sugars out of their leaves the colours just become so breathtakingly vibrant. Thank you for taking the time to see them with us! Cheers Keith
My husband, 87 year old mother-in-law and I had the most amazing experience flying with Keith and Georgian Bay Airways. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were treated so specially and with such enthusiasm. Our flight began with a complete safety check and emergency procedures - just the right amount of information without being made fearful. Our pilot Keith, asked if we had any destinations in mind and he accommodated every request. The Bush Hawk was comfortable, roomy and provided splendid views. Although we couldn't stop talking we were left speechless. We'll be back and will give this as a gift to family members.
Hi Jamie, those are the fun ones for us too. This kind of flying is special as we get to meet people from all over the world and from all walks of life. Thank you for trusting your travel plans with GBA and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Cheers Keith
Being a frequent visitor to Parry Sound and knowing the area, it truly was eye-opening to see the region from the skies above. The 30,000 Islands and the Georgian Bay area that we flew over seemed so much more expansive than what I've come to know by land. The staff at the desk were genuinely friendly and were happy to accommodate our requested detour from their usual route on the 35 minute flight. A special thank you to Lois, whose sense of humour and laid-back but professional style, made it that much more fun to fly. And another special thank you to Jesse for being such a great pilot and offering a helping hand when needed. We hope to fly again with you soon!
Hi Halyna, thank you for the kind words about our operation. Everyone here loves living in Parry Sound and sharing our part of the world with others. Jesse is out on another tour right now! Cheers Keith

Parry Sound: The Bay & Beyond
Nestled on the rugged shores of Canada’s largest fresh water archipelago and part of the UNESCO-designated Georgian Bay Biosphere Mnidoo Gamii , the west Parry Sound district is home to some of Ontario’s best outdoor adventuring.
From guided paddle tours with Georgian Bay Tours to expeditions with Diamond Waters Sailing , to on-and-off road cycling with rentals from Parry Sound Bikes , the area is a four-season magnet for on-the-water and on-the-trails enthusiasts ( snowmobiling, anyone?) And don’t forget all the fabulous golf courses, including the Ridge at Manitou Club , Seguin Valley Golf Club and Parry Sound Golf & Country Club .
From Parry Sound harbour you can set out along the region’s famous shoreline with 30,000 Islands Cruise Lines aboard the Island Queen or Islander X , or enjoy a dinner cruise on the MV Chippewa III . Get a birds-eye-view of this remarkable ecosystem during a flight with Georgian Bay Airways and take a guided island tour, or just enjoy the scenery from the float plane as you head out to lunch at the world famous Henry’s Fish Restaurant on Frying Pan Island. You can take a guided fishing expedition out of Georgian Bay Marina or spend the day visiting the makers of “Made in Parry Sound.”
Explore the stunning provincial parks located nearby, including Killbear , Massassauga , Oastler Lake , Grundy , Sturgeon Bay and French River – and take part in interpretive programming during the summer months to learn a little bit more about wildlife and ecosystems in this part of Ontario. You can also traverse the Park-to-Park Trail system – over 200kms of linking trails – and naturalist and Indigenous representatives from the Georgian Bay Biosphere Mnidoo Gamii also sometimes offer guided opportunities to explore the unique ecology area.
Downtown Parry Sound , check out the fascinating exhibits at the West Parry Sound District Museum , then afterwards head up the iconic on-site fire tower for an exceptional view of the bay, or enjoy a rest among the beautiful displays of Tower Hill Heritage Garden . Also discover the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame and the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts (home to great concerts, the Bands on the Bay series in summer, and the world-renowned classical music Festival of the Sound ).
When you’re ready to experience some local flavor, enjoy dining at one of the many fine eateries located here. And if you’re a craft beer enthusiast then you’re in luck – the west Parry Sound district has two: Norse Brewery is located just north of town in Nobel and you’ll find Trestle Brewing Company nestled just underneath its namesake landmark, the Parry Sound Trestle Bridge, which was once painted by legendary Canadian artist Tom Thomson. And if you’re into craft spirits you’ll want to check out Legend Spirits Co. , they can be found here too.
Additionally, there are many incredible marinas that dot the coast, welcoming sailors and motorboaters alike.
Be sure to explore all the municipalities of the west Parry Sound district, each with their own unique sense of place and wonderful stops along the way!
