Projekt Revolution's Origins:

Projekt Revolution is a summer tour organized by the rap-rock band Linkin Park that began in 2002. Working under the mandate of bringing the worlds of rock and hip-hop together for one concert series, Projekt Revolution started small, encompassing only four bands, but has since evolved into a larger event that now tours both the United States and Europe. Linkin Park are the one constant for each tour, with other acts over the years including Jay-Z , Cypress Hill, Korn , Snoop Dogg , Chris Cornell and 10 Years.

The First Tour (2002):

When Projekt Revolution kicked off its inaugural U.S. tour in 2002, the lineup consisted of Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, DJ Z-Trip and Adema, a healthy mix of hard rock and rap groups, with both Cypress Hill and Linkin Park demonstrating their ability to bridge the two genres. Unlike subsequent tours, the first Projekt Revolution took place in the winter, running from January through the end of February.

Projekt Revolution Gets Ill ... Literally (2003):

The following year’s tour was planned to run through the month of April, but organizers had to reschedule some dates, including its opening night in Rochester, New York, when Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington suffered a throat infection. As a result, three shows were moved to July. Because of the rescheduled dates, there were different groups that performed for each section of Projekt Revolution 2003, including Mudvayne, Xzibit and Jurassic 5. The 2003 tour played fewer cities, focusing less on the West Coast and more on the East Coast and Midwest.

The Tour Adds a Second Stage (2004):

Projekt Revolution 2004 saw the addition of the Revolution Stage, a second stage that featured niche rock and hip-hop acts. Since 2004, the tour has included both stages, allowing for a larger and more diverse list of artists to perform. That year’s edition also began the tradition of touring during the lucrative summer months, and with over 30 dates in the U.S., it was also the longest tour in Projekt Revolution’s history to that point. The Main Stage consisted of Linkin Park, Korn, Snoop Dogg, the Used and Less Than Jake. The Revolution Stage featured, among others, Ghostface Killah and Funeral for a Friend.

Hiatus (2005-2006):

With the tour gaining in size and stature, it was perhaps surprising that no subsequent Projekt Revolution festivals occurred in 2005 and 2006. The absence can be attributed to the members of Linkin Park concentrating on side projects, such as singer Mike Shinoda’s one-man group Fort Minor. Additionally, the band reconvened in the studio in 2006 to record their third album, Minutes to Midnight , with touring taking a backseat to completing the CD.

Projekt Revolution Returns ... Without the Rap (2007):

A week before Minutes to Midnight was released in May 2007, Linkin Park announced the relaunch of Projekt Revolution. Starting at the end of July and running until early September, Projekt Revolution 2007 focused heavily on metal and alternative rock, offering only one hip-hop act, the little-known Styles of Beyond, on the Revolution Stage. Meanwhile, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and other rock bands dominated the Main Stage. This shift in musical priorities brought criticism from some, who accused Projekt Revolution of abandoning its original mission of catering to both rock and rap audiences.

Expanding to Europe (2008):

Projekt Revolution 2007 also marked the festival’s first trip to Canada, setting the stage for next year’s more global ambitions. For the 2008 tour, Linkin Park announced that the festival would do four European dates in June that would cover Germany and the United Kingdom. Inviting Jay-Z and N.E.R.D. to participate helped restore the show’s balance between rock and hip-hop groups, although the subsequent American dates continued to lean toward hard rock, including sets from Chris Cornell, Atreyu, Ashes Divide and 10 Years.

Shortest Tour to Date (2011):

After 2008 Projekt Revolution went on hiatus until June 2011 when a four date tour was held only in Europe with one date in Finland and three dates in Germany. The bands Anberlin , Dreng, Middle Class Rut, Guano Apes, and Die Antwoord opened for Linkin Park in different arrangements for these shows. Since 2011 Project Revolution has put been on hiatus. In 2012 Linkin Park and Incubus performed as co-headliners for the Honda Civic tour. In 2014 Linkin Park and 30 Seconds to Mars co-headlined the Carnivores tour. Linkin Park has headlined world tours from 2009 to 2015 with various opening acts.

Projekt Revolution 2002

Introduction.

Projekt Revolution 2002 was Linkin Park's first edition of Projekt Revolution and was Linkin Park's first ever headlining arena tour in The United States. It was also Linkin Park's last tour in support of their debut album, Hybrid Theory. The tour ran from late January and ended in late February consisting of 21 shows.

Before the tour

Linkin Park ended 2001 by playing two shows in Universal City, CA for Almost Acoustic Christmas.

Coming off the most successful year in the band's history (2001), the band took a few weeks to prepare for Projekt Revolution in late January of 2002. During rehearsals for the tour, Mike had this to say to the fans, "Hi guys. Today is the first day of rehearsal for projekt:revolution. We took a break for the holdiays, and to write some new stuff. We're not going to play any of it yet, but we will be doing some cool stuff at the shows. Its very exciting to be coming back to a lot of the cities that we haven't been to since this time last year. At this point, i'm most excited about the DJ battles we're hosting. At every show, two local, unsigned DJs will be facing off to win a trip with the band to play with us and KORN in mexico city, in front of 40,000 people. and the judges will be YOU -- we're putting live audio from the winner of each night online, for you to vote on and you will choose who best DJ is overall. The winner of every night gets a little gift from vestax. anyway, see you at the show, and LP underground members: don't forget to bring your membership card."

The band switched the setlist up a little bit during the course of the tour. For the first six shows of the tour, And One was part of the set each night. However, the song was dropped at the seventh show of the tour in Wilkes-Barre, PA and has never been played since.

The setlist also featured a cover of the Deftones song My Own Summer , which Linkin Park said they used to jam to at rehearsals in their earlier days. Since we do not the set information for each night of the tour, there is no way to technically know how many times each of these songs were played on the tour.

The Detroit, MI stop of the tour was long rumored in the LP fanbase for having Eminem & D12 come out on One Step Closer. However, it has never been proven, or denied, so there is no way to know for sure. Although, through years of extensive researching, is believed that this performance never happened.

The band held a DJ battle contest on the tour, where prominent DJs from certain cities would "battle" at preliminaries and the winner would get to play in between Cypress Hill and Linkin Park on the tour. One of the DJ's featured during this named DJ Focus has become a name in the LP community, because a vinyl entitled "Projekt Revolution Breaks" from 2002 surfaced online years after the tour ended and featured a lot of Linkin Park samples and mash-ups, etc.

Contrary to popular belief, another rumor was that Mr. Hahn hosted a DJ battle against Z-Trip at the Philadelphia, PA stop of the tour. This never actually happened.

During the Fort Worth, TX stop of the tour, someone let off a fire cracker in the pit during the show, which caused Linkin Park to stop playing and kick the person out. It is reported that Mike cursed more than he ever has at any Linkin Park show in history because of the incident.

The band had to stop songs twice at the show in Phoenix, AZ because of rowdy fans and the crowd was getting out of control. Further more, Chester had to stop Runway three different times at that show in Long Beach, CA because fans were too out of control. This continued at the rest of the shows on the tour, the worst incident being in Las Vegas, NV on the final stop of the tour. A lot of fights occurred at the show in the crowd. A few of the fights ended up with drunken men running through the floor, some ended with others falling off the balcony area and onto the floor, others ended with the members just being thrown into the floor. After one of the songs, Chester thanked the security guards, to which the crowd responded with a prompt chorus of boos.

Since it was the last show of Projekt Revolution 2002, Chester invited every person from every band on the tour out to join them for the end of One Step Closer. He also asked the roadies to come out.

Collaborations

Members of Cypress Hill came out on One Step Closer at various shows of the tour. Marky Chavez from Adema came out on One Step Closer at various shows of the tour.

Z-Trip came out on It's Goin' Down at various shows of the tour. Riff Raff also came out on the song at various shows, alongside Z-Trip.

The X-Ecutioners came out on It's Goin' Down at the Long Beach, CA stop of the tour, as well as the San Diego, CA stop of the tour.

Touring Bands

Main Stage: Linkin Park, Cypress Hill, Adema, Z-Trip

Originally, Linkin Park had wanted Korn to join the tour, but scheduling did not allow for it. Instead, Korn joined two years later for Projekt Revolution 2004.

Chester had this to say about the tour and the touring bands, "What makes this tour great is the collaboration of the heavy guitars and drums along with the hip-hop . B-Real from Cypress Hill also had this to say about the tour. Not only are you getting Linkin Park, a band that does the fusion of hip-hop/metal stuff, you got Cypress Hill that's hip-hop and dabbles with the metal. So we cover all bases."

Adema had to cancel their shows in Lowell, MA, Fairfax, VA and Philadelphia, PA due to a family emergency.

Cancelled Shows

There were shows announced in Little Rock, AR and Albuquerque, NM for the middle of the tour, but these shows were later canceled and shows in Memphis, TN and Phoenix, AZ, respectively, were added in their place. This was just a small re-routing of the tour before it began - the same thing happened with the North American Arena Tour for Meteora in 2004.

The band released several tracks from the San Diego, CA stop of the tour on the Somewhere I Belong CD single. The tracks were Step Up and My December.

There are also various videos from the tour available, one being One Step Closer from the Colorado Springs, CO stop of the tour shown on MTV, as well as My December from the Valley Center, KS stop of the tour, which was released a video on LP Underground.

After the tour

After the last show of the tour, Linkin Park flew to Mexico City for their first show ever in Mexico. They would not return until 2012, over ten years later. This was a show at Foro Solo for over 60,000 people, opening for Korn. The setlist at this show was just twelve songs...dropping It's Goin' Down, Forgotten, and My December.

Two days later, Linkin Park played a benefit concert planned by Los Angeles-area teens for Los Angeles' first pediatric hospice. The "Young Angels Concert," to benefit the city's TrinityKids Care, was open only to students and their families, with tickets starting at $85. Admission included a buffet dinner, while all proceeds went to the hospice. The concert was a fulfillment of a community service project by a dozen 13-year-olds from the Mirman School in West Los Angeles. It was held at the House of Blues in West Hollywood.

Occasionally, a show would have DJ Z-Trip as the master of ceremonies.

For 2007 , Linkin Park decided to make the tour green by donating $1 of every ticket to American Forests through their charity Music for Relief and using biodiesel on a majority of their buses, eliminating an estimated 350 tons of carbon emissions. [1] There will also be informative booths that will show concert goers how to lower their greenhouse gas emissions . [2]

It was revealed in Revolver magazine that Muse was in the list of bands Linkin Park had picked but couldn't join Projekt Revolution as they had other commitments to deal with.

On August 22 , 2007 , MySpace.com streamed the concert live, allowing MySpace users to watch the concert for free from their performance at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI . The event was hosted by Matt Pinfield .

Linkin Park is selling their performance from the 2007 PR tour at the merchandise booths, each CD comes with a blank disc and a special code that allows you to download and burn that specific Linkin Park performance from the venue it was purchased at. The price of purchase for the CDs are $11.00.

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell on Projekt Revolution

By Steve Baltin

Steve Baltin

On the eve of the launch of the fifth Projekt Revolution — the multi-genre tour founded by Linkin Park in 2002 — Rolling Stone checked in with two of its acts, LP’s Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell . The pair of famous frontmen chatted about the greatest rock singers and classic Lollapalooza fests.

How does being around all these different artists on the Projekt Revolution tour inspire you? Chris Cornell : Being on tour can sometimes be less complicated than being at home because your day is regimented. You wake up in the morning, you warm up, you do a soundcheck, you play your show, you sleep or get on the bus — every single day is like that. There’s someone putting a sheet of paper under your door telling you what time you’re gonna do what. But a festival tour like this is very different. It’s much less predictable and a lot of different things can happen. And seeing other bands perform for me changes my whole mood in terms of what I end up bringing onstage. I’ve often watched live performance footage from any band before I go onstage just ’cause it gets me in that mindset.

Chester Bennington : What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I’m part of the reason they’re there. For me, last Projekt Revolution was probably the best touring experience I’ve ever had. For me to be able to bring out Mindless Self Indulgence — a band that I’ve always liked and I’ve felt that they’ve never really gotten the love that they deserve — to see them show up and play with another band like Saosin and 5,000 kids are showing up at noon, just like, “Yes, it’s happening.” And I felt really proud that they got to do that and that Gerard [Way, of My Chemical Romance] and Lyn-Z [Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lindsey Ballato] reignited their friendship and then ended up getting married backstage on the last show. I was like, “This is freaking awesome.” When we did Ozzfest I couldn’t go to the main stage because I had the wrong pass. I felt like I was segregated from everybody else. The main stage guys were in their superstar land and it was just like, “I don’t feel comfortable here.” Everyone needs to feel respected and everyone needs to be able to go wherever they wanna go and do whatever they wanna do.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Chris, going back to what you said, how does seeing live music affect the way you approach playing? Cornell : Energy and enthusiasm, those are the things that I’m talking about. To stand up in front of thousands of people and perform whatever way it is, whether it’s in a rock band or a string quartet, it’s an intense thing to do. As soon as I see it, it’s like I immediately absorb it. The other way to do it is sit in a room by yourself and then you go out and suddenly stand in front of a bunch of people for the first time. At Lollapalooza ’92 I would go into the pit, put my hair in a hat, and watch Ministry and try to see if I could jump over the security guards and stage dive and really get into being a fan. Bennington : That was a great tour [ laughs ]. Cornell : That was also very diverse and seeing all those bands in one day I could see it sort of changing everybody. But the enthusiasm, the passion for doing it is what I connect with immediately just by seeing it happening in front of me. When we toured Australia, Chester broke his wrist on like, the third song and then finished the whole set with a broken wrist. That kind of dedication and passion, like, “This is what I’m doing, this is the most important thing there is, I’m onstage right now.” That affects me.

You guys are regarded as two of the greatest voices in rock. How much will you be watching what the other is doing onstage? Bennington : For me, I’m such a fan I think that’s the most important aspect of why I do what I do and how I do it. I’ve got to play with a lot of guys that I’ve grown up loving; I get to sing on stage with Chris Cornell, I got to play with Metallica and Black Sabbath, and I’ve performed songs with Jane’s Addiction, members of Guns n’ Roses, did the Doors 40th anniversary with the Doors and Perry Farrell onstage — I’m just like, “What world do I live in, ’cause this can’t be real?” And I love watching other guys play and I love being pushed mentally to try to do my best. It made me really uncomfortable when Donovan Leitch [at a Camp Freddy show], said [I have] “The best voice in rock & roll.” I was just like, “Ugh,” and Steven Tyler walks onstage and in my opinion he has one of the best voices ever. Cornell : Yeah, there’s no quantifying. It’s weird to even think that way. I’m sure the best singer in the world, nobody knows who that is. He’s somewhere, or she’s somewhere, and they’re out there. I get blown away by singers all the time and almost feel embarrassed that I would be referred to or regarded as one of the best singers in rock ever.

Chester Bennington, Linkin Park Singer, Dead at 41

What’s one of the best shows you’ve ever seen? Bennington : I’ll never forget this show, I saw Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers, in my opinion, all on their best records. You had Pearl Jam out with Ten — the band was great, they’ve got two of the shreddingest guitar players alive, and they were just killing it. And then Nirvana came out, and it was so different, so new and so fresh, it felt like when I discovered Jane’s Addiction. I felt like the Chili Peppers didn’t say, “Okay, you guys can’t blow things up because we’re gonna blow things up. And just have Pearl Jam do basic lights.” Everybody got to do what they wanted to do and I think that, for me, was the reason why it was so special. No one freaked out when Eddie Vedder ran across the arena and was climbing up the wall and singing while swinging from the lighting fixtures over his band. I was like, “He’s gonna fucking kill everybody.” But it was really great. And then for Kurt Cobain to come out and destroy his set and to feel that pure raw passion and then the Chili Peppers are one of the best bands ever. It was a really memorable thing and I remember being like, “I wanna do that. I want to be part of something like that.” And going back to Lollapalooza, there was Ice Cube, Ministry and you guys [Soundgarden], it was like, “What is happening right now ’cause this doesn’t normally happen?” And that kind of inspired me and I think it inspired all the guys in my band ’cause we were like, “How can we take all this stuff and put it in one thing? And how can we take all of our inspiration and all of our passion for all these other bands and bring that out on a tour?”

Five Years on, a Musical Revolution Marches in a Different Direction

By Kelefa Sanneh

  • Aug. 17, 2007

WANTAGH, N.Y., Aug. 15 — In 2002 the rap-rock juggernaut Linkin Park set out on the first Projekt Revolution tour. The lineup was meant to bridge the rap-rock divide: it included the veteran hip-hop act Cypress Hill, the nu-metal band Adema, and DJ Z-Trip, known for his cross-genre mash-ups.

Five years later, the old rap-rock “revolution” seems like ancient history. (These days when rap and rock collide, it’s often the rappers doing the cultural appropriation: think of the Shop Boyz, partying like rock stars; or Gym-Class Heroes, a hip-hop group with an emo fan base; or Kanye West, who recently hired the indie band Peter, Bjorn & John to play backup.)

The 2007 Projekt Revolution tour, which came to the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater here on Wednesday night, didn’t bother much with hip-hop; the other headliner was My Chemical Romance, a band as theatrical as Linkin Park is un-. The rise of emo has pulled this tour — and, it seems, this audience — in a different direction.

Pulled Linkin Park, too: the band’s recent album, “Minutes to Midnight” (Warner Brothers), plays down Mike Shinoda’s rapping to emphasize Chester Bennington’s melancholy confessions and Brad Delson’s de-metalified guitar. On Wednesday night Mr. Shinoda spent much of the time holding a guitar or sitting behind a keyboard, and Joe Hahn, the D.J., was pleasantly unobtrusive.

With the exception of Styles of Beyond, rappers relegated to the front of the lineup, the event was all rock, including a fistful of (more or less) emo bands. One of them, Taking Back Sunday from Long Island, came close to stealing the show with an infectious and slightly chaotic set of love songs. No doubt the hometown advantage helped: the singer, Adam Lazzara (who has adopted a faux-ksy drawl not unlike Jack White’s), earned a cheer when he reminisced about his old job at Pete’s Deli in Farmingdale.

There was also room for some outliers: the willfully ridiculous techno-punk act Mindless Self- Indulgence; the new-wavey Placebo. HIM, the Finnish goth-rock band, has plenty of irresistibly melodramatic songs, all sweetness and gloom, but sounded surprisingly wan. Perhaps HIM’s rather vampiric lead singer, Ville Valo, was puzzled by the strange glow that illuminated the stage and the seats while his band played. It’s called daylight, and it doesn’t seem to suit him.

Linkin Park has sold millions of albums by being charmless but proficient, and on Wednesday the members underscored both extremes. They look less like rock ’n’ roll royalty and more like a bunch of technocrats; considering the meticulous way they make music, that might be an apt description. The huge refrains of “Numb,” “In the End” and other old hits shook the bleachers as effectively as ever. Some of the more restrained new songs (including “Shadow of the Day,” which owes U2 a debt, and maybe even a check) received a more restrained response, but so far this band’s new business plan seems to be working.

Still, Linkin Park wasn’t nearly as much fun as My Chemical Romance, the New Jersey band that has become a top seller by evolving from emo tantrums to glam-rock epics. As darkness fell and the stage exploded with fire and lights, Gerard Way, the singer, acknowledged the notably unweird young men who now form a significant minority in his band’s fan base. He mischievously asked them — “Just the boys!” — to take off their shirts and wave them in the air, and though he never removed his own tight jacket, he seemed to enjoy the spectacle. This might be the perfect way for a coy misfit to deal with an influx of beefy male fans: flirt with them.
