Visit a Canyon & a Boat Ride

Board a trolley with a guide and head to the entrance of one of Starved Rock’s most scenic canyons. The walk is less than a mile and takes about 45 minutes. Following the hike, relax with a boat ride on the picturesque Illinois River. A snack, bottle of water and souvenir drawstring backpack are included. Canyon chosen may vary, depending on weather, river and trail conditions. Reservations are required. Capacity is limited.

Sainte Genevieve Riverboat arrives in Ottawa

Starved Rock Country has long been a popular destination for recreational boating in north central Illinois, with its beautiful sandstone cliff faces and calm, wide waters drawing countless leisure boaters and the occasional river cruise stopover. Now, thanks to the newly established Ottawa Packet Company, exploring the Illinois River will be easier than ever before.

The Sainte Genevieve, a 149-passenger sternwheeler, soon will offer daily tours of the scenic waterway. Spearheaded by Gentry Nordstrom, owner of The Chrysalis Group Management and Realty, and Nathan Weiss, owner of Ottawa Millwork Company, this passion project finally is coming to fruition as the vessel arrives home at its new port in downtown Ottawa on Saturday, March 12.

So why did they choose Ottawa for the exciting new tour boat venture?

“We saw an opportunity – Ottawa is this historic riverfront town – but the river isn’t very accessible,” Nordstrom said. “Unless you own a boat or know someone who owns one, you don’t get to spend much time out on the water. Outside of rentals at Heritage Harbor, there’s not many ways to enjoy the river. This is a way to make it more accessible and provide some great, much needed, event space.”

Nordstrom sees this as a large tourism draw for the city, bringing in overnight stays and day-trippers alike with high-quality, evening sight-seeing excursions, one of the many one- to two-and-a-half-hour tours they plan on hosting aboard The Ste. Genevieve riverboat. Most trips will take place in the stretch of water between Starved Rock and Marseilles, with hopes of expanding to include longer duration trips that will show guests how the lock system works. Dinner cruises, featuring small plates from favorite local restaurants, and regularly scheduled live events also are expected to be cornerstones of their activity calendar.

The Ottawa Packet Company has been working in conjunction with the city of Ottawa to have their home port be located right along the downtown riverfront, near the site of the former River Rescue building, adding a beautiful new addition to the city’s vintage skyline.

The journey to owning a riverboat began in late September 2021, when Weiss reached out to Nordstrom about the possibility of partnering together and purchasing the Julia Belle Swain, a legendary steamboat located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The pair even had a personal connection to the vessel, as Weiss’ father, Tom, with the help of Nordstrom’s father, John, handcrafted and installed a custom, ornamental mahogany bar and millwork for the Julia Belle Swain back in 1985.

While the Julia Belle Swain deal ultimately didn’t materialize, Nordstrom and Weiss now had the riverboat bug and were doubly committed to tracking down the perfect vessel for Ottawa.

“That boat was more than we could bite off, but we knew that this was a good idea and that we wanted to keep exploring it,” Nordstrom said. “Nathan stayed on the hunt, he was connected with Kevin Stier, who operates the Riverboat Twilight out of Le Claire, Iowa. Kevin called him up one day and said he’d found us the perfect starter boat.”

That perfect sternwheeler was The Mark Twain, a 149-passenger excursion vessel docked in Cincinnati, Ohio, and already Coast Guard-certified and fully operational. Nordstrom and Weiss jumped on the opportunity, and drove out east for a tour and sea trial.

“Right away, we knew that if we’re going to do this, it has to be this boat and it has to be right now,” Nordstrom said.

By early December, they closed on The Mark Twain, and began preparations for the planned two-week trek down the Ohio, and up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. However, the voyage to the new home port was not without its challenges.

About a week into the trip, Weiss, along with the crew on board, encountered a bad windstorm, and the boat was blown into an outcropping of rocks near the shoreline. The vessel’s hull was breached, and quickly began taking on water. Luckily, they were able to get towed to a nearby quarry in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

“That was our saving grace; they were very hospitable to us and really helped us out at a difficult time,” Nordstrom said. “Starting out, I knew the boat was going to name itself on the trip. We knew we wanted to change the name from The Mark Twain to set it apart from similar boats with the same name.”

After the boat safely landed in Ste. Genevieve, Weiss’ wife, Jessica, proposed Ste. Genevieve as a possible name for the vessel. So they began researching the history of Ste. Genevieve’s namesake, the patroness saint of Paris in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions, and discovered some parallels.

“At one point during her story, Ste. Genevieve’s enemies conspire to drown her in a lake, and they’re unsuccessful,” Nordstrom said. “After reading that, we knew the boat had named itself.”

The boat spent about a month in St. Louis getting repairs to the hull on a dry dock. While they had the vessel out of the water, they went ahead and made several more modifications and repairs that will keep the paddlewheels turning for decades to come. The newly minted Ste. Genevieve resumed her journey to Ottawa on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Setting the boat apart from the herd, the twin paddlewheels on The Ste. Genevieve aren’t just for show – they’re the boat’s sole source of propulsion. This creates a leisurely throwback experience, best enjoyed from the vessel’s open-air, top deck.

The Ottawa Packet Co. hopes to kick off its season in late May and, weather dependent, host tours through late November or early December. During the off-season, the boat will be docked at Heritage Harbor, serving as additional event space in the winter months.

Day 1: august 19th: arrival into quebec city, qc, upon arrival at the quebec city international airport you will be met by a guide and transferred to your hotel by motorcoach. please note: we will have 2 transfer times available which will coincide with the majority of the arrival times of the group flights., join your hosts, tom and ryan for a welcome cocktail at the hotel. (1 alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage per guest), accommodation:  hotel chateau laurier, quebec city, hotel château laurier québec is a four-star hotel known for its outstanding service and ideal location in the heart of the city., meals provided:  none, day 2: august 20th: quebec city sightseeing, this morning, enjoy a guided tour of quebec city, the crown jewel of french canada. explore unesco – listed vieux quebec, with its cobbled streets, ancient city walls and colourful victorian facades. your tour will also pass the colonial citadel and the majestic chateau frontenac, as well as the imposing 19th century parliament buildings. a one-way ride on the “funiculare”, a gondola connecting upper & lower town, is included., afternoon at leisure.  join your fellow travelers for dinner at a local restaurant within walking distance to your hotel., meals provided:  breakfast, dinner, day 3: august 21st: quebec city culinary tour & leisure time, best explored by foot, see hidden treasures while learning about quebec’s heritage sites (unesco), history and culture. during your 2.5 hour tour, walk through the narrow cobblestone streets, admire the views from dufferin terrace’s boardwalk and do not forget to take great “selfies” along the way. you will also see château frontenac, place royale, petit champlain. along the way enjoy sampling local foods concocted by quebec artisans., tasting includes: poutine, maple cake, fudge, cider and a special surprise to take home, remainder of the day is at leisure in this fascinating town that still exudes the spirit of new france., meals provided:  breakfast, day 4: august 22nd: quebec city – ile d’orleans & montmorency falls – board cruise ship, we start the day with a stop at montmorency falls, quebec`s greatest waterfall which stands even taller than niagara falls explore the walking trails and bridge over the waterfall. after lunch, we explore nearby ile d`orleans, a time capsule into an era of traditional vegetable cellars, ancient farms, bread ovens, and sugar shacks. riddled with old stone houses and with all of its pristinely preserved land, this island just 5 km from the city centre is truly a can’t miss enjoy the afternoon sightseeing on the island. a stop will be made at a traditional winery for a guided tour & tasting. later, we also stop at the chocolatier of the island, where the group will be able to pick-up a souvenir box of chocolates before returning back to the city to board the cruise ship., 17:30 – passenger boarding commences at quebec city, 18:00 – captain’s punch & cheese reception, 18:30 – captain’s welcome remarks – safety instructions & crew introductions., 18:50 – depart the harbour to cruise the city’s waterfront, 19:30 – empress class roast prime rib of beef buffet; harbour cruise, montmorency falls and the beauty of quebec city at night, complimentary liqueurs will be provided, 22:00 – return to port – piano music on the player piano & lounge services, accommodation:  m/v canadian empress, the canadian empress is a grand ship with a warm and friendly personality, and the size and design of the vessel serves to enhance the intimacy of river cruising. the exterior of the ship emulates the classic steamboats of the victorian era, while the interior is a mix of charming early heritage style, with brass handrails and ornate metal ceilings, and contemporary fashion. this classic riverboat style is combined with modern technology to provide all of the safety, comfort, and amenities expected by today’s travellers. all staterooms are above the waterline and include daily maid service., meals provided:  breakfast, lunch, dinner, day 5: august 23rd: quebec city – trois riviéres.

16:30-17:15 – Return to Trois Riviéres. Time permitting – guests are welcome to do a self-guided walking tour of the Old City.  Afterwards, return to the ship.

Day 6: August 24th: Trois Riviéres – Montreal – Lachine

06:30 – depart trois riviéres bound for montreal / shipboard activities, 15:15 – disembark at port of montreal for a 2 hour guided tour via motorcoach.

18:30 – Depart Montreal to enter the Seaway Lock system and overnight at Lachine

Accommodation:  m/v canadian empress, meals provided:  breakfast, lunch, dinner, day 7: august 25th: lachine – lake st. lawrence – upper canada village, 07:30 – depart lachine bound for upper canada village / pass through beauharnois locks (2) lower and upper  shipboard activities, 16:00 – pass through eisenhower & snell locks (u.s.a.) into lake st. lawrence, early evening – ship arrives upper canada village, crysler park marina, evening – relax and stroll the marina and grounds / fun-loving entertainment, day 8: august 26th: upper canada village – prescott (fort wellington) – brockville, 09:00 – miniature train departs to meet horse-drawn wagons to tour upper canada village, 12:00 – transportation returns from the village, 12:30 – depart marina bound for prescott – pass through lock at seaway control dam iroquois, 16:00 – disembark at prescott for a tour of fort wellington (national historic site), 17:30 – coach returns from fort wellington, 17:45 –  depart prescott bound for brockville, 19:15 – arrive brockville, “the city of the 1000 islands” for overnight, evening – relax and stroll along the park walkways / fun-loving entertainment, day 9: august 27th: brockville – ivy lea (1000 islands tower).

09:15 – Transfer by motorcoach for a tour of Fulford Mansion

11:15 – coach returns from fulford mansion to the ship, 11:30 – depart brockville bound for millionaires’ row and turn-about at rock island light – bound for ivy lea, 15:30 – disembark at ivy lea for a coach transfer to 1000 islands tower, 17:00 – return to the ship and overnight at ivy lea, evening – dance the night away to big band sounds & vocals (new & old), day 10: august 28th: ivy lea – gananoque, ontario – kingston.

08:15 – Depart Ivy Lea bound for Gananoque, Ontario

Check out of your hotel after breakfast and transfer via motorcoach to ottawa intl. airport for your departure flight or continue with your ottawa post extension.  (transfer is unassisted and will be leaving at a set time which will be determined at a later date and based on flight schedules), accommodation:  n/a (depart home).
