Best and Worst Times to Visit Roatan

The best time to visit Roatán for dry weather is during the late winter and early spring. The worst times are September and October during the rainy season.

With a new cruise ship terminal, a new professional golf course at Pristine Bay and aggressive marketing of Roatán as a top ecotourism destination in this part of Central America, Honduras is poised to make a steady comeback from the hurricanes that have ravaged its shores.

Average Roatan Temperatures

The average high temperature for this cruise destination ranges from the low 80s Fahrenheit during the winter to the high 80s in the summer. Average low temperatures, mostly at night, range from the mid 70s Fahrenheit in the winter to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

Like most Central American countries, average temperatures in Roatán do not change dramatically from season to season.

Rainy and Dry Seasons

Like most tropical countries, Honduras has a rainy season and a dry season, known locally as invierno (winter) and verano (summer).

In general, the rainy season runs from May to November in the interior and from September to January along the north coast. September through January is the worst time to visit Roatán, although December and January are less risky than September through November.

Despite wetter weather, December is a popular time to visit Roatán because of spring break from schools.

Similar to the Caribbean, the Roatán hurricane season runs from August to November. Direct hits are uncommon, but they can cause severe damage when they occur.

In the interior of Honduras, especially the west and south, the rainy season runs roughly from May to November. Rains usually come in the afternoon and last an hour or so. On the north coast and Bay Islands, the rainy season is later, around September to December, with storms possible into February.

The dry season for Roatán and the Caribbean coast of Honduras lasts from February to June. It is generally the best time to visit, with the coolest time of the year being the months from November to February.

Travel is easier during the dry season, especially for scuba diving and trips. On the other hand, the forests and countryside are lusher during the rainy season.

Furthermore, when the rains come they are usually in short bursts, heaviest between August and December.

February and March are good months to visit because the weather is fairly stable across the country. During this period, the trails and roads begin to dry out but the trees and underbrush are still full and green. Apart from the lushness, the air is also fresh, and it is a nice contrast to the parched conditions you may see in March and April.

Tourist Season

December through April is the major tourist season in Honduras as northerners flee the frigid temperatures. As such, lodgings quickly fill up, so reservations are always advisable. Indeed, they are a must during Christmas and Easter weeks, when Hondurans are apt to be traveling and competing for available hotel space.

The country experiences a second, shorter high season during July and August, prime North American and European vacation time.

The Holidays

Christmas Week is a popular time to travel to Central America to see religious ceremonies, etc.  Easter Week is also when many North Americans have their vacations.

Keep these two things in mind, if you are planning to go during the holiday season, everyone with a job in Honduras takes this week off. As such, certain places may be closed.

Generally, most people visit during the dry season with a few others opting to travel during the rainy period.  Still, if we had to pick one no-go month, it might be October, when the entire country can be deluged with rain.

How to Visit Roatán Island in the Caribbean

roatan honduras best time to visit

 Chris VR / TripSavvy

In terms of sheer distance, Roatán, Honduras is one of the closest  Caribbean islands to the United States—but when it comes to culture, value, and even good looks, Roatán is worlds away.

Part of Honduras' Bay Islands (which also include Utila and Guanaja), this 40-mile-long island has endured centuries of shuffling under British, American, and Spanish influences. Add the island's Indigenous tribes and afro-Carib settlers, and it's no wonder Roatán's people are some of the most diverse in Central America.

Most visitors to Roatán are united by a passion for scuba diving—the island is bordered by the second-largest barrier reef in the world. However, you don't need to even know how to dive to enjoy the island: Roatán attracts every type of traveler. Whether you're a luxury cruiser or a budget backpacker, here's how to visit Roatán, Honduras.

Best Places on Roatán Island

Because Roatán, Honduras is so long and skinny, most of its resorts and luxury hotels are located on private beaches outside of the island's towns. But that's where the island's life and flavor are found! Roatáns principal communities include:

  • Coxen Hole: The capital of the Bay Islands is Coxen Hole, Roatán's largest city and the first place you'll see—both the boat dock and the airstrip are located in Coxen Hole. Though travelers don't tend to remain in the city, it's the island's center for politics and commerce.
  • Sandy Bay: Most of Roatán's cultural attractions are located in Sandy Bay, such as the Institute of Marine Sciences and the Carambola Gardens and Marine Reserve. Sandy Bay is just across the narrow width of the island from Coxen Hole.
  • French Harbour: Lively French Harbour is the core of Roatán's fishing trade. Several of Roatán's most exclusive hotels are located here, as well as the island's only Iguana conservatory.
  • Punta Gorda: The only Garifuna settlement on Roatán, Punta Gorda boasts a dynamic culture that has remained largely unchanged since the late 1700s. Travelers are welcome. Many of Roatán's other local villages are found on this part of the island, like Jonesville, Oak Ridge, Port Royal, and Camp Bay.

Things to Do on Roatán Island

Luckily, there's no end to Roatán's diversions, but many of the island's best activities center around its beautiful waters.

  • Snorkel or Dive the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System: Roatán claims more than 100 named dive sites, so no matter your skill level, you'll find something that suits you. Some of the best places to dive off the island include El Aguila ("The Eagle"), a 230-foot-long cargo ship sunk 110 feet deep near Sandy Bay; Mandy's Eel Garden, a beginner-friendly wall that houses not only garden eels but also sea turtles, stingrays, and barracuda; and Cara a Cara ("Face to Face"), where you can spot more than a dozen reef sharks.
  • Go on a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour: If you'd rather stay above water but still want a glimpse of Roatán's marine ecosystem, there are several tour operators in the area—including Hyde Tours —that will take you on a safe yet memorable ride.
  • Zip Line Through the Roatán Jungle: For some different scenery, embark on a canopy tour of the island. Bodden Tours ' zipline excursions bring adventure-seekers to a monkey and sloth sanctuary, while JungleTop Zipline Tours offers 16 courses that you can race along.
  • Visit the Carambola Botanical Gardens: Located in Sandy Bay, this 40-acre arboretum welcomes a variety of birds like Smooth-billed ani and Golden-fronted woodpeckers, plus monkeys and Anole lizards. Hike several jungle trails, including a steep climb up to the peak of Carambola Mountain, and keep your eyes peeled for orchids, medicinal plants, and fruit trees.
  • Indulge in Local Seafood: Dinnertime on Roatán is always an adventure. While fresh fish and lobster are the most obvious choices, don't shy away from local Caribbean cuisine , like conch fritters and coconut bread.
  • Take a Day Trip to Other Honduran Islands: Book a boat out to other Honduran islands, like the pristine Cayos Cochinos, or a plane to the Copan ruins in western Honduras.

Best Time to Visit Roatán Island

Roatán's temperatures consistently remain in the 80s year-round. The rainy season begins in October and lasts until January or February, with November and December seeing the most precipitation. Despite it being called "the rainy season," the island still sees the sun this time of year, and tourists flock to Roatán in an effort to escape chilly temps further north. July and August can also be quite rainy.

The dry season runs from February to June, and it is a great time to visit Roatán if you want to spend your days in and around the island's beaches. March and early fall are some of the best times to visit Roatán, as the occasional rainfall can help you cool down.

How to Get to (and Around) Roatán Island

A number of airlines serve Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport in Coxen Hole—including United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines—with flights operating out of major U.S. cities such as Houston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and New Orleans. Overland travelers should head to the port city of La Ceiba, where they can book a ferry out to the island; ferries depart twice a day, at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Once you're on the island, take a bus or a taxi. Or if you prefer to navigate yourself, Roatán has several car rental companies.

Tips and Practicalities

  • It pays (literally) to exchange your money for Honduran currency, the lempira, at a bank in French Harbour or Coxen Hole. Prices in U.S. dollars are usually hiked a bit.
  • When Columbus landed on Guanaja, Roatán's   sister island just 10 miles to the east, in the early 1500s, he wrote: "I have never tasted sweeter water of better quality." As much as we'd like to believe him, we always recommend drinking bottled water in Central America.

West Bay Roatan Most Beautiful Places

Similarly, West Bay beach is a popular area for resorts, but has more of a touristy atmosphere than the West End’s laid-back vibe. There are plenty of sports activities to enjoy here, but the beach does get crowded especially on cruise days. Still, it is considered the most beautiful white sand beach on the island and is home to the best snorkeling on Roatan.

Explore the Wild East End

A top recommendation in our Roatan travel guides for those staying longer in Roatan is to explore the East End. Unlike the rest of the island, the East End of Roatán is undeveloped and feels much more in keeping with traditional country island living. At this end of the island, travelers can find a variety of birds, armadillos, iguanas, butterflies and watusi (island rabbit) and the original forest growth make for a beautiful jungle hike. Also, cattle, horse and island farmers are often seen selling melons and bananas to anyone who passes by.

Jonesville Roatan the Most Beautiful Places in Honduras

One of the East End’s main highlights is the quaint fishing village of Oak Ridge, which looks like Roatán’s equivalent of Venice. Here, narrow streets, waterways and canals are adorned with wooden houses, while nearby communities can be reached by boat, such as Jonesville Point Marina. Here, The Hole in the Wall Bar is open for lunch and dinner, serving lobster and shrimp – a local speciality.

A short distance from here is Camp Bay, a beautiful stretch of white-sand beach where travellers can experience lunch on a floating palapa bar. It should be noted that locals living on Roatan spend their vacations on the East End’s Camp Bay beach. From here, there’s a fantastic water taxi expedition to see the mangroves. Depending on who you tour with, you’ll see a half-sunken shipwreck called “Twitter’ and hear stories about the 16 th Century pirates.

Visit the Carambola Botanical Gardens

With 40 acres of natural wonders, the Carambola Botanical Gardens promises ‘a walk on the wild side”. Here, travelers can explore their many jungle trails that offer excellent wildlife photography, bird watching and the Monkey La-La can be seen playing here. There are hundreds of plant species, orchids, exotic flowers, medicinal plants, fruit and nut trees, the “Chocolate Tree” and the famous Honduran mahogany tree that’ll capture the hearts of any plant lover. While here, make sure not to miss the chance to hike your way to the summit of Carambola Mountain, as there’s a cliff opening to some magnificent views.

Visit the Local Roatan Villages & Harbors

There are many towns and harbors on Roatán Island, and the most commercial of them is Coxen Hole. Otherwise known as Roatan Town, this is where all the main shops and bus stops are.

From Coxen Hole, the road leads to the small French Harbour , the islands second-largest town and busy fishing port. The French Harbour offers guests the chance to interact with rescue Sloths and Monkeys at Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hang Out .

Sloth Hangout Roatan Travel Guide Best Things to Do

Also, French Harbour holds the only Mall on Roatán, so if you’re looking for a day of shopping, this is the place to go before chilling in one of its many down-to-earth coffee shops and restaurants.

Visit Local Communities

If you’re into history and culture, then visiting some local communities on the island will tick all your boxes. Just 5km from Oak Ridge is Punta Gorda, the oldest Garífuna community in Honduras, keeping many of its ancient traditions alive. The best time to visit is on a Sunday. Every Sunday, the community celebrates with traditional food, dancing and music. Alternatively, on the 12 th of April, the community celebrates the anniversary of their settlement’s founding, and all are welcome to join in!

Another unassuming community lives in Sandy Bay. There’s the Institute for Marine Sciences here, with exhibitions on marine life and the island’s geology. There’s also a museum narrating the local history and archaeology. Sandy Bay is a history lover’s paradise!

Take a Weekend Trip to Utila

Utila Beautiful Places in Honduras

Staying in Roatan for at least a week? Why not hop on the ferry and head over to Utila. This can be done as an overnight trip or a weekend getaway. Utila is a small island (much smaller than Roatan) so you can explore it in only a couple of days. If you’re a diver, diving in Utila is very different than Roatan.

Although they are on the same large reef system, the reef in Roatan is actually different than what you see in Utila. It is also a very healthy, beautiful reef. There is an opportunity to swim with whale sharks or swim with Dolphins in Utila in between dives. This makes a dive trip a whole day trip experience.

Hopefully our Roatan travel guide has managed to convince you that Roatán Honduras is the perfect location for an island vacation . Its culture and history will surprise you, and its natural beauty will leave you speechless! Discover it for yourself before it becomes a tourist hotspot!

Where is Roatan, Honduras?

Roatan Honduras is a just a small, narrow island, being just under 40 miles long and only 5 miles wide at its longest stretch.

It’s small, but it’s perfectly situated in the middle of the beautiful Meso-American Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world – after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia of course.

The island is found 40 miles off the northern coastline of Honduras, and it is the largest of the seven Bay Islands, and largest settlement in the region.

How to Travel to Roatan, Honduras

Being a popular diving and holiday destination, Roatan is well connected and relatively easy to travel to. Several major airlines offer direct flights from the US, from transport hubs such as Miami and New York, however, these tend to be only seasonal in keeping with demand.

Roatan is well connected to the large Honduran city, San Pedro Sula. There are daily flights from the city to the island, and San Pedro Sula is itself well connected internationally, especially to the US and surrounding central and southern American nations.

The more adventurous traveler can even take a ferry from the Honduran mainland to Roatan. The island is just a short ride away from the coastal city of La Ceiba and a fast, modern catamaran makes the journey twice a day, in the morning and again in the afternoon, connecting Roatan to Honduras in 70 minutes.

Many cruise ships also visit the island during the Caribbean cruising season, and this can be a great way to see the highlights of Roatan on a whistle-stop tour. It can get busy though when the ships are docked.

Getting around Roatan is easy, considering the island’s small size. The airport and ferry terminal are located in Coxen’s Hole, which serves as the main transport hub of the island, and the best spot to find amenities and shops.

From here, buses run the length of the island at regular intervals. There are many taxi drivers on the island looking for fares too, just ensure you barter before accepting a lift.

Scooters can be rented daily and are an efficient way to travel around Roatan, but can be potentially dangerous for those unused to riding them or unused to the roads.

Make sure to check out   Fodor’s Caribbean Cruise Ports of Call   if arriving by cruise ship.

Best Time to Visit Roatan, Honduras

Roatan experiences very consistent temperatures throughout the year, with hot, warm weather all year around. The tropical weather though means that the island does experience distinct wet and dry seasons.

The dry season runs from July to January while the wet season runs from February to June. The area does, however, experience the odd shower even in the supposed dry season, so be prepared for this.

The best time to visit is, of course, the dry season, especially if you are visiting Roatan to snorkel or dive. The water is clearest at the end of the dry season when the runoff from the rainy season has dissipated, and the surrounding coral looks at its best.

The dry season, of course, is also when the cruise ships tend to visit and prices may be significantly higher than in the offseason.

Where to Stay in Roatan Honduras

The vast majority of the accommodation in Roatan can be found located in the west of the island. Coxen Hole may be the transport hub, however, most tourists will choose to stay elsewhere, along the more scenic stretches of coastline.

West Bay and West End are not far from Coxen Hole and are favorites for those on holiday. There’s quite a range of standards and prices available across the island, from high-end luxury hotels like Xbalanque Resort to more modest hotels for the budget traveler like Reef House Resort , you will be sure to find accommodation for all travel styles and budgets.

Read reviews and check prices with our Hotel Search Engine , that gives you the best hotel deals found on the web. Our search engine pulls results from all of the major booking places, including Expedia, Hotels, Booking and more. All the options, all the deals, all in one place and just for you.

Language and Currency in Roatan

Drone view of Roatan

Roatan is part of Honduras, which is a majority Spanish speaking nation, however, due to its complicated colonial history, the primary language – unlike the rest of the mainland – is in fact English.

This is reflected in the place names and the names of the locals and you will find that English is the number one language to use.

US Dollars are widely accepted on the island, however, you will find that paying in US Dollars will cost a premium, so it’s best to change up your money on arrival in Coxen Hole at the many currency exchanges, for the best rates on the island. The local currency is the Honduran Lempira.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe?

Honduras hammock at the beach for sunset

Mainland Honduras has an infamous reputation for violent, gang-related crime and many of the cities are not that safe for tourists to visit. Don’t let that put you off traveling to Roatan however, because the island is a very separate entity to the rest of the country.

The violent crime of the mainland is rarely found on the island and with the local economy reliant on tourism, they go out of their way to ensure visitors feel safe. Petty theft may occur, as it does anywhere in the world, but Roatan is a safe destination for a vacation.

Roatan is my favorite spot in the western Caribbean! I must have visited 12-13 times in the last 8 years. People are friendly, English and US currency is used widely, and you get a lot more than the eastern Caribbean for your money.

I appreciate you helping me learn more about Roatan. I like how you said that the main language is English. My husband and I are thinking of going somewhere foreign that has beaches but has English speakers as well. We should look at Roatan.

Roatán is the largest and most developed of the Bay Islands. Long and thin (31 miles (50km) long, but only 1.2 miles (2km) to 2.5 miles (4km) wide), the island is (like neighboring Utila) a diving and snorkeling paradise – virtually its entire coastline is fringed by an astonishingly diverse coral reef teeming with tropical fish. On land, exquisite white-sand beaches like West Bay, a mountainous interior of pine-forested hills and the remote wild east of the island (once a pirate hangout) beg to be explored.

Brief history

Interesting facts

Roatán is a relatively small island and can easily be explored in a relatively short space of time. The island stretches 50km long, yet only 2-4km wide. One of the more popular areas of the island is West End, which is the young and trendy part that is great for a night out and a thriving hub to meet new travellers. The laid-back vibe makes it one of the hotspots of the island where people congregate.

The east of the island offers a more relaxed atmosphere, with a small strip of restaurants and bars along the beach. This area has pristine white beaches stretching towards calm waters, making it a great spot for snorkelling straight from the shore. Here is where you’ll find more luxurious places to stay as well, along with a calmer atmosphere.

Eastern Roatán offers up pristine beaches and an alluring wildness, away from the cruise ships and tourist sites. Known as what used to be a pirate hangout, where the road ends nature takes over. This area of the island is where the locals inhabit and you’re likely to find a more authentic experience opposed to the tourist hotspots on the Western side of the island.

The best beaches in Roatán

Diving is one of the most popular of Roatán’s activities. People come from far and wide to explore the islands crystal clear waters in search of marine wildlife and 1000-foot coral walls. Roatán sits on the lower section of the world’s second-largest barrier reef system, called the Mesoamerican Reef. This natural wonder stretches nearly 700 miles from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay Islands, providing the island with a rare place for divers to see a coral reef teeming with life. The long sandy beaches make Roatán a favourite compared to its touristy island cousin of Utila. The waters surrounding the island offer plenty of interesting dive sites for both novices and experts from fascinating shipwrecks to nerve-wracking shark dives.

Other water activities which are incredibly popular including fishing, kayaking and exploring the area in a glass-bottom boat. The beaches provide the perfect place to snorkel in shallow water for those less confident in their abilities with the opportunity to see vibrant coral and a diverse selection of tropical fish. In the eastern end of Roatán, you can explore the deep mangroves on a motorised canoe and see some of the colourful wildlife of the island including endangered spiny-tailed iguanas and yellow-naped parrots.

Another popular tourist activity is to just… relax. Roatán is great for those looking to get away from it all with miles of untouched, sandy beaches that offer the perfect backdrop to read a book, have a drink or watch the sunset. Walks around Roatán will unearth glorious mountainous landscapes with lush tropical foliage and varied wildlife. A range of wildlife sanctuaries dots the area that allows you to interact with the tropical birds and endangered wildlife of the island while learning about their habitats, challenges and future.

Everything you need to know about diving in Roatán

The best times to visit Roátan are in May and September. These months are just before and after the high season for tourists, which means that the weather is hot and sunny and you get to avoid the crowded streets that come with the higher season. May is great for endless sunny days, while September is incredibly cheap but you run the risk of having a few downpours.

From December to Easter, Roátan experiences it’s high season. This is when the cruise ships come in and the island is taken over by tourists. Usually, the weather during this time is unpleasant in the US and they start to run more direct flights. Due to this, the prices for everything rises but the island has a pleasant hum of activity. If you’re looking for a holiday where you want to interact with plenty of new people and don’t mind a busy environment, this is definitely the time for you.

October to December is regarded as the low season for tourists. The island is quieter, there are fewer activities taking place and the wet season has begun. The bad weather creates a knock-on effect across the island meaning that accommodation and food become much cheaper but the amount of sunny days diminishes. That means less time for sunbathing!

Like most Caribbean islands, Roátan is full of luxurious resorts and hotels that offer every accommodation you could possibly dream of, from luxury spas to jungle-themed properties.

The most luxurious places to stay tend to be found at West Bay with a mix of beachfront and hillside options. During the day this part of the island will be a flurry of activity with the arrival of enormous cruise ships, but in the evening it turns into a tropical hideaway. Ideal for families and honeymooners, West Bay provides private resorts, garden bungalows and luxury B&Bs.

The island offers some amazing diving opportunities making it popular with a younger crowd. Due to this, you’ll find hostels dotted around the coastline offering a cheaper stay for those looking to soak in all Roátan has to offer while watching their wallet. Options for backpackers tend to be found in the West End that offers a range of diverse shoestring accommodation. Properties on the main road tend to be booked by people looking for adventure and to experience the vibrant nightlife of West End.

Those looking for an off the beaten path experience can stay in Eastern Roátan, the wild and quieter side of the island. Resorts that dot along this unspoiled beachfront are few and far between, and the ones that do reside on this side of the island are private and intimate. Staying on this side of the island will have you interacting with the locals for a much more personalised experience than the busier Western side.

A guide to the best hotels in Roatán

Although Roátan is a fairly small island in the Caribbean, you’ll still need to utilise their public transport to get around. The island has plenty of buses and taxis, making it easy for you to travel around if you don’t want to rent a car. In fact, there are about 400 taxis on the island and they’re all based on the Western side of the island due to its popularity with tourists. There are no addresses on the island so to get around by taxi you’ll need to be good with directions. You’ll likely be telling the taxi driver when to turn so make sure you have clear instructions on how to get to your accommodation, or at least know a popular landmark close by!

Within the main areas, most places are within walking distance and the surrounding beaches provide the perfect backdrop for a pleasant walk. If you’re thinking of travelling further afield, then there’s the option to hire a car. It takes roughly an hour and a half to drive from the West Bay of the island to Camp Bay Beach in the East, so if you want to go exploring the Eastern beaches away from the city then hiring a car to take the trip at your leisure is ideal.

Visa requirements

As Roátan is part of Honduras a visa is required to visit the island and country as a whole. Visiting the country is a fairly simple process as you will be issued a visa on arrival without any prior paperwork. On your arrival to Roátan Juan Manuel Galvez Airport, you will be granted a 90-day tourist visa. If you decide that you love Honduras enough to want to stay longer the visa can be extended for an additional 30 days while you’re in the country. That’s 120 days of paradise.

When travelling to Roátan you must also have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after arrival or else you may not be able to enter the country.

The island of Roátan was first discovered by Christopher Columbas as the first European visitor to the island on his fourth voyage between 1502 and 1504. Since then Roátan has been invaded by the Spanish and British; essentially starting a tug of war between the countries for the island’s plentiful natural resources. Due to this, Roátan has very varied ancestry that ranges from the Garifunas, who have been recognised as a UNESCO World Intangible Heritage of Humanity, to the Caracoles of European and British-Afro-Caribbean descent, the Mestizo people from the mainland and the people from modern countries who have chosen Roátan as their home.

Roátan is also well known for its history of harbouring a number of pirates, and played a large part in the pirates of the Caribbean era. The island is said to have been home to a pirate stronghold called Port Royal. Some say that the pirates’ influence is still strong on the island, but mostly it’s just the consumption of rum.

Further reading – Where is Roátan?

As you’d expect, Roátan’s cuisine is rich in freshly caught fish from the surrounding oceans and decadent fruit such as bananas, oranges and limes, which all grow locally on the island. Typically restaurants serve western food intended for tourists, but in some hidden areas you’ll find places selling local delicacies. Lobster, shrimp and conch are always on the menu, and are usually made into stews and soups.

The most popular food in Roátan is Balaedas; homemade flour tortillas that are heated and filled with refried beans and cheese, then topped with a variety of options including shredded chicken, scrambled eggs and avocado. They’re usually sold for a very cheap price and are easily available, providing the perfect morning snack before a long day of diving.

It’s always important to research the country that you’re travelling to which will help prevent you from offending someone by doing a seemingly innocent act. Every country has its own quirks, which means navigating one without the proper research can leave you in a sticky situation.

When travelling to Roátan, a few things to keep in mind are:

  • Although Honduras is a primarily Spanish speaking country, the most common language on Roátan is English.
  • The residents are very proud of their island and all it’s natural to beauty. It goes without saying that leaving rubbish on the beach and breaking coral is a surefire way to annoy the locals.
  • Although Iguanas are protected in the island and it is illegal to do so, locals of Roatan will hunt down these creatures to eat. The lizards have a reputation in Honduras of curing all ailments from colds to poor sexual performance, making them a popular dish. Iguanas are most prized when they are served with their eggs, making it a huge problem for the endangered species.
  • Roatan used to be a pirate hotspot, with more than 5000 pirates living on the island in the 17th century. The island has had some famous pirates step on its shores including Blackbeard, Henry Morgan and John Coxen, who the town of Coxen Hole has been named after.
  • It is prohibited to build higher than 3 stories on Roatan. This means you won’t find any high-rise buildings on the island, just endless rolling mountains and beautiful coastlines.

When is the Best Time to Visit Roatan?

A Caribbean island north of Honduras’ north shore, Roatan is an ideal holiday destination. From long sandy beaches and tropical forests to vast marine life, it has a lot to offer for any kind of holiday, but choosing the best time to visit Roatan can be tricky.

Since the annual temperature only differs by 8°C, day and night, with lows at a very mild 25°C, the climate can be welcoming all year, especially to divers who can enjoy the warm waters and aquatic life. However, the rainy season may be off-putting to some, so it’s important to time your stay well.

We’ve put together the best parts of each season, to help you decide when to visit Roatan .

Hibiscus-flower-spring-roatan

Jun-Jul-Aug

At the beginning of summer in Roatan, the weather starts to heat up, reaching around 32°C daily. This humid, tropical heat can be very enticing to some people, so if you visit the island in the summer months, make sure you bring a good sunscreen. July is considered the hottest month, and the heat makes the sea all the more inviting, so pack your swimming costume and snorkel if you have one – if not, there are plenty of places to rent gear all along the coastline.

A common question when talking of the Roatan climate is: “are there mosquitoes in Roatan?” And yes, there are. Since the island has a regular eastern wind, however, the mosquitoes don’t pose much of a problem, and cases of malaria and dengue fever on the island are incredibly rare.

You can witness more turtle nesting in summer with Camp Bay welcoming more of these cute sea creatures in June.

Dec-Jan-Feb

Rain continues into December, however January sees the peak of the rainfall. Unlike other tropical countries, rainy season largely means heavy showers rather than continual rain, and most of it occurs in the early mornings, so you can still enjoy a pleasant day out. Thanks to this, the island is still a popular destination for the Christmas holidays and New Year celebrations.

The brilliant greenery in the island’s forests remains luscious through to spring as the rains end, so to get the most out of it while still staying dry, February is a great month to stay in Roatan. February is also the month of love, with Valentine’s Day in the middle, and at Camp Bay Lodge, we can make your romantic getaway extra special, find out more here .

Marilou-Chris-Camp-Bay-Lodge-Owners

Mar-Apr-May

Spring is possibly the best time to visit Roatan as the combination of great weather, animal life, and holidays and events means there is plenty of time to sunbathe and unwind, or, if you prefer, get active. March marks the beginning of the dry season in Roatan so you won’t be bothered by any showers, and the temperature is starting to warm up again towards 30°C so you can really make the most of the pristine beaches and crystal clear waters.

March also sees the beginning of turtle nesting season on the island. There are many different nesting sites across the island, but in March, they can be seen nesting on the Camp Bay beaches on Roatan’s East End.

Also sometimes in March, but more often in April, we have the Easter holidays. This is a popular time for tourists to visit the island due to school holidays, however it’s also a great time to see how the locals celebrate. Roatan has a large cultural mix, so you can see different celebrations across the communities on the island.

April is also the month of the annual Garifuna festival in Punta Gorda . With singing, dancing, eating and drinking, this is a fun event to get involved with.

For fans of apnoea diving, despite being able to enjoy the island all year round, you can also visit in May to witness the island’s annual freediving competition. Also, while kitesurfing season may already be well under way, by spring, there are fewer showers than in January and February, so more time to get out on the water.

sunbather-beach-roatan

Sep-Oct-Nov

The end of summer also sees the tourist season wind down as the temperature begins to drop and the rainy season begins. September is usually very pleasant, as in spring, however the rains in October through to December mean the end of the kitesurfing season and less pleasant beach walks and swimming. However, the rainy season in Roatan can be incredibly scenic, so if you prefer to get out of the crowds and enjoy a quiet break on the island, complete with incredible thunderstorms and hikes through strikingly lush greenery, then autumn is the best time for you to visit Roatan .

In Autumn we also have a few Honduran national holidays on the island. Come join in the celebrations on 15 September for Independence Day, 3 October for Soldier’s Day or 21 October for Army Day celebrating the overthrow of dictator Julio Lozano Díaz in 1956.

What’s more, since the temperatures are falling and schools are restarting, the off-peak season in Roatan can often make everything from flights and car rental to accommodation much cheaper.

beach-bonfire-camp-bay-roatan

There is no definitive ‘best time to visit Roatan’ as each season has great positives for every interest. Camp Bay Lodge has something for everyone, whether you’re looking to get away from the city and unwind surrounded by nature, or get active out at sea.

Roatán guide: Why this Honduran island needs to be on your go-list

And where to eat, stay, and play on this underrated island..

Rosalind Cummings-Yeates

With its golden beaches, turquoise water teeming with marine life, and varied landscapes—from rain forests to mangroves to mountains—it’s a wonder Roatán isn’t more widely known. And yet, the tiny island off the north coast of Honduras remains blissfully off the radar of most travelers (save for backpackers who have long loved it for its budget prices).

Later in 2023, Kimpton will open its first Honduran property on Roatán, likely bringing with it a rush of new interest in the island. For now, however, it remains one of the best destinations for a Caribbean vacation without the high costs or crowds. Read on for where to eat, stay, and play and get started planning the perfect tropical trip.

What to do in Roatán

Green sea turtle resting near a coral reef in Roatan, Honduras

Framed by the second-largest coral reef in the world, Roatán is all about getting in the water. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottomed boat tours with outfitters like Hyde Tours and Las Moskitia Eco Adventures are popular ways to see the reef, but for a more special experience, go with Las Cascadas Lodge to Cayos Cochinos , an isolated archipelago and marine preserve where you can spot jewel-toned fish and sea turtles in the healthiest water in the country. It takes about an hour to sail to this archipelago, inhabited only by the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people. Once there, you’ll take a dip in the pristine water, then go hiking to try and spot native pink boa constrictors.

To learn more about Roatán’s Garifuna population, pay a visit to Punta Gorda on the northeast end of the island. The town is Roatán’s oldest permanent settlement, founded in 1797 by Garifuna deportees from Saint Vincent, who were stranded here by the British. On Sundays, the village comes alive with a festive street party featuring live music, dancing, and food like sopa de pescado (a fish-and-coconut-milk soup that’s scooped up with machuca, bites of mashed yellow and green plantains).

Another must-do is Las Cascada Lodge’s waterfall rappelling tour , which tests you physically and mentally with a trek through the rainforest before descending a waterfall on a rope. If you’re after something slightly less extreme, go floating through serene mangrove tunnels with a local guide to learn about Roatán’s fascinating ecosystem and natural history, or tour Gumbalimba Park to see local Capuchin monkeys, macaws, sloths, and iguanas.

What to eat

Grilled octopus, spicy shrimp, and fried ceviche at Azul restaurant

Honduran food is a delicious blend of local seafood and Indigenous, Spanish, and Caribbean flavors. The most beloved dish, baleada, involves a wheat-flour tortilla stuffed with refried beans, cheese, and cream, all sprinkled with your choice of toppings like scrambled eggs, chorizo, and avocado. A popular breakfast food, baleadas can be found at Calelu ’s, a West End cafe and grocery, where you can also enjoy hearty dishes like seafood soup and chicken with rice and beans.

For elegant dining, try Romeo’s Restaurant , a waterfront bistro on French Harbour that serves Italian and Caribbean cuisine. Here, you can pair dishes like chorizo-and-gorgonzola pizza and whole red snapper in Creole sauce with live music and ocean views. Also check out Yurumei Sports Bar and Restaurant in Punta Gorda for Garifuna specialties like sopa de caracol (a rich conch soup that’s a favorite all over Honduras) and gifity (a spirit made with herbs and rum). The spot sits right on the beach, so you can watch the fishermen catching the ingredients for your meal.

Roatán’s top gourmet experience can be found at Azul , the main restaurant at the upscale Blue Roatán Resort in West Bay. The chef’s menu offers an array of elevated Caribbean dishes, from conch carpaccio to coconut-cream lobster.

Where to stay

Aerial view of the Grand Roatan Caribbean Resort in Roatan, Honduras

Though small in size, Roatán boasts everything from budget rooms for backpackers to five-star resorts. The best places to stay, however, highlight the island’s natural resources. The Lodge & Spa at Pico Bonito plunges guests into tropical splendor with spacious cabins surrounded by lush gardens and cacao groves, plus a striking mountain backdrop. Each cabin has a private porch and hammock for taking in the scenery, and the resort features its own hiking trails as well as a spa that uses organic ingredients grown in on-site gardens.

Ibagari Boutique Hotel 's open-air lobby displays local art and wooden furniture, while the infinity pool offers sweeping ocean views. In the plush rooms, balconies and deep-soaking tubs make for a luxurious stay. There’s also a fantastic restaurant, Luna Muna, serving king crab tortellini and beef tenderloin with mushroom risotto.

In summer 2023, the already stunning Grand Roatan Resort will become a Kimpton hotel after a major expansion that includes 126 renovated guest rooms and seven new suites with plunge pools overlooking the Caribbean Sea. For the time being, guests can still look forward to suites with outdoor showers and private terraces surrounded by bougainvillea, as well as the show-stopping Kao Kamasa Spa, which draws inspiration from indigenous Pech culture for treatments like an obsidian palm stone massage in a temazcal (sauna).

When is the Best Time to Visit Roatan?

avatar

Roatan is a beautiful and vibrant island located in the Caribbean Sea off Honduras’s northern coast. It’s known for its white-sand beaches, lush jungles, and crystal-clear waters. While you can visit Roatan any time of year, there are certain times that offer the best experiences. Read on to learn more about when to go to get the most out of your trip!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Roatan, Honduras?

The best time to visit Roatan is typically during the dry season from mid-December through April as this is when the weather is at its best with low humidity and temperatures.

The Weather in Roatan

Roatan has a tropical climate all year round, with temperatures averaging between 25°C (77°F) and 30°C (86°F). The wet season runs from May through October and brings higher humidity levels as well as more frequent rain showers. December through April is generally considered the dry season and is usually the best time to visit if you want to take advantage of sunny days and minimal rainfall.

When is Hurricane Season in Roatan?

Hurricane season in Roatan, Honduras tends to be between July-November. Truly damaging hurricanes are rare in Roatan, Honduras. If you choose to go during this time, you can expect to experience a bit of rain and high winds. I visit Roatan a few times a year, and I have gone plenty of times during its hurricane season.

The biggest thing to worry about is if it’s going to be sunny or cloudy. If you’re going for longer than a week, you will definitely have plenty of beach days. Just be prepared and bring a few books! I went for a week last November and read 3 books! I guess that’s all you have to rely on when you visit a beach and it’s cloudy.

However, I personally like the wind when it’s sunny, because the ocean breeze cools you off from the beating sun. Don’t get me wrong, Roatan is still just as beautiful, hot, and sunny as it is during the rest of the year, however the sun sleeps a bit more than usual.

When is Rainy Season in Roatan?

Rainy season in Roatan, Honduras tends to be between May-October. However, it’s worth noting that the rain takes a short break in between July and August, making it the perfect time for a summer vacation.

If you are looking for a summer vacation and cannot travel during the dry season (November-April), July or August is the perfect time to plan your trip!

When is Tourist Season in Roatan?

Roatan can be quite crowded during peak tourist seasons such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Easter, and other major holidays. Additionally, most US school summer holidays attract a great number of tourists looking for some sun and fun. If you want to avoid crowds but still enjoy warm weather, consider visiting during shoulder months such as March or November. During these times, you will find that prices are lower than usual too!

Activities in Roatan

The activities available on Roatan depend greatly on when you visit. For example, whale shark sightings occur mainly from April to September due to their migration patterns; scuba diving can be enjoyed all year round; fishing charters run from December through June; snorkeling tours tend to be offered only from December through April; sailing excursions are available throughout the year except during hurricane season which runs from June through November; kayak trips can be taken any time; horseback riding can be enjoyed all year round.

Conclusion:

While you can certainly visit Roatan at any time of year, the best time for you may depend on your budget and preferences. Are you looking for a relaxing beach vacation to read your book? What about an adventure of a life time? Ready to meet lots of new people?

If you want the perfect combination of warm weather, low crowds, and plenty of activities then plan your trip for late winter/early spring or late summer/early fall—these are considered some of the best times of year to visit this beautiful island! No matter when you decide to go however, make sure that you’re prepared for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at you!

Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

Things to Do in Roatan Cruise Port

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

How to Get to Roatan

roatan honduras best time to visit

Reaching the tropical Caribbean island of Roatan is easier than you may think! There are multiple options for direct international flights, several domestic flight options, and plenty of ways to get to Roatan by sea. Let’s break down all the ways you can get to Roatan for that much-needed vacation!

Where is Roatan?

Roatan is an island located off the northern coast of Honduras in Central America. It is the largest of the Bay Islands and is often called the Gem of the Caribbean for its stunning green rolling hills surrounded by turquoise Caribbean Sea.

Direct International Flights to Roatan

Roatan can be reached by any of a variety of direct international flights. The airport on Roatan, the Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (code RTB), receives flights throughout the year from both domestic and international airlines.

To fly to Roatan directly from the U.S., you can use American Airlines out of Dallas or Miami, Delta Airlines out of Atlanta, or United Airlines out of Houston. Most West Coast airports will send you via Houston, or you can take advantage of the Avianca Airlines hub of San Salvador airport (in El Salvador); from there you can fly to Roatan in less than an hour on daily flights.

To fly to Roatan from Canada , you can leave directly from Toronto or Montreal on either Sunwing or Transat Airways during the winter. Direct service is usually offered from late November through April.

To fly to Roatan from other points in Central America (outside of Honduras), you can use Tropic Air direct from Belize City, in addition to Avianca Airlines coming from San Salvador. San Salvador serves as a major hub for the region, so you’ll find many flights coming from elsewhere in Central America, as well as South America, flying through there en route to Roatan.

Domestic Flights to Roatan

Local flights are available to Roatan from Honduras’ airports in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Copan, and La Ceiba. The domestic airlines are Isleña, Lanhsa, CM Airlines, and SOSA. You can also utilize domestic airlines to travel between the Bay Islands of Utila or Guanaja.

Cruise Ships Coming to Roatan

There are two cruise ship terminals in Roatan: Port of Roatan is located in Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay  is near French Harbour. Between the two ports, Roatan receives cruise ships throughout the year, bringing over a million tourists to the island for a day at a time. Western Caribbean cruises on Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Regent Seven Seas, Costa, and more might see Roatan pop up on the itinerary. For those cruise ships docking at Mahogany Bay, you might only see Mahogany Bay listed as the destination – that’s us, right here in Roatan!

Other Ways to Get to Roatan

Roatan also receives the Galaxy Wave Ferry from the coastal city of La Ceiba twice daily: once in the morning and once in the afternoon. This is an alternative to the short domestic flight from the coast if you’re traveling from mainland Honduras. There is also a ferry service from the Bay Island of Utila, in addition to charter boat services between the islands.

Alternatively, you can also book private charters to reach Roatan from wherever you’re traveling from! There are plenty of options by both air and sea that will offer you the unique experience of arriving to a tropical paradise via your own private transportation.

Whatever way you get to Roatan, we’ll be happy to greet you!

Top things to do in Roatán

Now let’s take a look at some of the very best things to in Roatán.

Whilst areas such as The Riviera Maya in Mexico are more known for their waters, the hands-down best are actually found here around Roatán (and the other Bay Islands).

Here you’ll have crystal-clear waters all times of the year , which is unlike many other destinations which tend to be seasonal. And it’ll also be nice and warm too – it is the Caribbean after all!

You’ll see lots of beautiful marine wildlife such as Octopuses, Sharks and Tuna. It’s also one of the most renowned spots for spotting the elusive Hammerhead Shark too. When diving you’ll also be taken to explore some really cool shipwreck sites too – which include the famous Odyssey.

Whilst diving is great year-round, those looking to spot the incredible Whale Sharks will want to come between February and May, which are the best months for spotting them. We recommend heading with this diving tour which includes all transport and diving gear.

Enjoy a memorable trip on a Glass-Bottom Boat Tour

Perhaps you’re not overly into getting wet, or are also scared of being in the open sea (George was petrified before learning to dive here).

If this is you, yet you still want to see under the waters, then this Glass-Bottom Boat Tour is perfect for you. Here you’ll set sail in a comfortable boat, where you can head under the deck for some awesome underwater views.

As you’ll be cruising 6ft under the waves , you’ll be able to see many incredible and rare species without even getting a drop on you! After you’ve enjoyed the scenery, you’ll step off the boat and then head to a monkey sanctuary (included in the tour) where you can also spot some sloths too.

You’ll finally visit the Chocolate & Rum Factory, where you can learn how the processes work as well as try some of the very best stuff .

Relax on one of the most beautiful beaches on Earth

Quite a statement we know – however it’s true given how West Bay Beach makes its way onto the top 20 lists annually without breaking so much as a sweat.

baleada honduras

Around a mile long, here you’ll find many spots between the swinging palm trees and the multi-colored turquoise waters for setting up camp on. Those who enjoy snorkelling will feel like they’re in paradise here too, given how transparent these waters are (you’ll find many bright-coloured schools of fish passing you by every now and then).

It can get quite warm during midday, and as such we recommend coming in the morning or during sunset with some beers to enjoy the incredible sunset over the horizon .

Along West Bay you’ll also find lots of amenities too such as restaurants, rental shops and even dive centres for those ready to explore this incredible reef. This means you can easily spend the day (or multiple) without ever really having to leave!

Zip-Lining through the jungle canopy

Most who have heard of Roatán (and it’s the same with all of the Bay Islands) think that it’s just sandy beaches, vast oceans and nothing more. This couldn’t be any further from the truth!

These island also have lots of lush vegetation, and on Roatán (which is the overall biggest of the three) you’ll find a large swath of incredible Honduran jungle . One of the most fun things you can do when on the island is to go on this adventurous zip-lining tour .

Here you can ride the 11 different routes through the thick canopy, which can be as high as 120 ft above the ground. They’re also pretty long too, and those who want to really savour their experience will want to head on the longest which measures a whopping 1,500 ft!

As well as having professional photos included, you’ll also have an English-speaking guide who will explain how to use the ropes and also other interesting facts about this slice of Honduran paradise.

Swim with Dolphins

In this area of the Caribbean Sea you’ll find many beautiful Dolphins species such as the Bottlenose Dolphin . They’re found in these waters throughout the year, which is perfect if you want to get up-close to swim with them.

One of the most reliable areas to see them is on Anthony’s Key, which is situated on the west-end portion of the island (near West Bay). Here you can swim with trained dolphins with instructors in the water with you in case you’re not feeling so confident or are a first-timer.

Along West Bay you’ll also find many local companies offering tours out to spot Dolphins in the wild, so if this sounds more like your thing then you simply need to have a chat, agree a price and go for it!

There are other dolphin species in these waters to keep an eye out for too, which include the Rough-toothed Dolphin and Spinner Dolphin .
