A Winning Family Menu

Safari MK is a national multi award-winning children’s soft play and party venue based in Milton Keynes. As well as providing a place where families can play and spend time together, it is committed to serving high-quality, home cooked family food for both children and adults. Take Stock went to find out the secret to their success…

There is nothing on Safari MK’s menu which a parent wouldn’t let their child order.

“We’re sneaking healthy ingredients into children’s favourite foods and presenting them in a fun way,” says Gordon Forster, owner. “So, if a child wants a burger they can have it!”

Gordon’s background is in hospitality and his wife Fiona in accountancy, and they set up the family-run business four years ago.

“The vision for Safari MK was to create something unique both in Milton Keynes and within the indoor play industry,” explains Gordon. “We wanted families to want to come and eat together as well as play. We have three children under the age of 11 so understand the demands of young children and what parents need to enjoy a relaxing day out with them. And an important part of that day is eating a delicious, nutritious meal.”

Food plays an important role within Safari MK, which is why Gordon and his wife hired a head chef to create the menu and run the kitchen, setting a standard way beyond the level that the majority of leisure venues enjoy.

“We wanted Safari MK to produce modern, good quality lunchtime food to the same standard as a fancy cafe, and knew the only way to do that was to get an experienced and skilled chef,” says Gordon. The kitchen also houses a sous chef and three full time trainee chefs.

The burgers at Safari MK are made by local butchers with good quality meat containing a minimal fat content, lower salt and sugar.

This ethos also goes for their ‘chicken nuggets’ which are actually real strips of chicken oven baked, and served with their chunky oven chips.

“Nothing here is fried,” says Gordon proudly. “Everything is either baked or steamed in our many ovens. Healthy eating is just thinking a little bit more about the food we eat. People think ‘healthy’ is boring but it isn’t – it’s just eating a balanced diet and taking more time to think about the ingredients that go into your dish, and the method in which you cook it. We are not the sort of place where food goes from the fryer to the plate.”

The menu is so impressive that most people – including parents – who visit the play centre always stay to eat.

“In every meal we produce we make a conscious, determined effort to reduce the fat, sugar and salt content without compromising the quality or taste,” says Gordon. “And that’s a promise I can make to all the parents who bring their children to us.”

Many first time visitors to the centre are always pleasantly surprised and impressed by the menu; a clear testament to the good job Gordon and his team are doing.

“We also work really hard at the presentation and how our food is served,” adds Gordon. “We use the correct cutlery and have lovely plates – there is no plastic in Safari MK. We want our customers to feel that when they come here to play they are also have a nice lunch out – like a special treat. And as a result, nearly everyone who visits Safari MK eats with us.”

Vegetables are added to every child’s meal and the sandwiches are garnished with carrot and cucumber sticks. Only a small handful of handcooked crisps are added to adult sandwiches and they are also asked if they want a complimentary salad garnish.

“We decided it’s better to give customers the choice,” says Gordon. “That way if they want to be extra healthy they can and if not the salad isn’t wasted.”

The menu is changed seasonally and they have a weekly specials board. The main meals like bolognese and curry are the same for adults and children – just smaller portions.

Open from 8.30am during the school holidays and 9.30am term time they offer a continental breakfast for children and adults have the choice of bacon, sausage or egg baps. There’s a gluten-free bread option for their sandwiches and a range of snacks for those customers with allergies. A folder is available detailing all ingredients and allergens in everything so parents and children know exactly what they are eating.

The cafe also offers a range of sugar-free and low sugar drinks, however, full fat alternatives are still available as eating in moderation is key believes Gordon.

Safari MK won three awards at the BALPPA (The British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers & Attractions) in 2018. It won Attraction Of The Year, Employee of Excellence award for its centre manager Jen and second place in the Food and Beverage Excellence award.

So, what’s the key to their success?

“We are consistent and don’t cut corners,” replies Gordon. “Use the best quality products and cook them correctly. Think about how you can make the best panini, not the cheapest way you can produce it. Lots of food outlets easily over complicate their menu – but there is no need. We keep it simple. Serving good meals isn’t rocket science. It’s what every customer deserves.”

When I first moved to the area, I began asking anyone I came in contact with where I should go for the best food in Half Moon Bay. Some were obvious ones that are in the more touristy areas, and are popular for a reason. Some were random spots that mostly locals only go to. This list is a mix of them.

Built out of an old container, this quick coffee stop is perfect before a long beach walk or after a water excursion out on the bay. And coffee won’t disappoint!

AJ’s Coffee

• Address: 198 San Mateo Rd Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Drive-thru or walk-up window. Grab a coffee for the road or just keep your hands warm as you go nursery shopping on Route 92.

Cafe Society

• Address: 522 Main St Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

A sweet little cafe that offers a few pastries and a good latte when needed. One of the top places for coffee in Half Moon Bay.

Navio’s at the Ritz-Carlton

**Special Occasion Alert**

Reach deep into your pocketbooks for this one-of-a-kind treat. A seated all-you-can-eat tasting brunch at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton. Ocean to table menu. Research prices and book ahead. Also a good dinner spot but most talk about their brunch. All the right ingredients make this one of the best restaurants in Half Moon Bay with a view.

Locals Tip: If you don’t want to pay for a valet, park at the coast side trail parking lot and walk. It’s a 10 minute walk and free.

A quick tip : Since they don’t serve food but deserve a shout-out, Hop Dogma in Pillar Point Harbor area is a great brewery with lots of seating. They are completely fine if you want to BYOF (bring your own food). Many of the sandwich and seafood spots in the area would be perfect for a to-go order so you can pair it with some great beer. Just an idea if you want to kill two birds on the bucket list.

Looking for a restaurant in Half Moon Bay with outdoor dining? Check this laidback eatery with a chill vibe, great location, and good food. Good outdoor space for eating and even has a fire pit for chilly days. Good for dinner but has more of a brunch/lunch feel. Occasional live music too.

Dad’s Luncheonette

This cute little caboose is take-out only but there are a few tables around if needed. The mushroom sandwich and homemade chips are always popular.

Sam’s Chowderhouse

Probably the most famous restaurant in Half Moon Bay. Award famous even. Always packed and most likely a line. But the food and views are all known for a reason. Popular opinion is the hot buttered lobster roll is better than the cold lobster sandwich. But you choose for yourself.

A personal favorite among all the places to eat in Half Monn Bay. Here, I slowly make my way through the menu, but I always order a salad. Lots of outdoor seating, quality ingredients, and consistently good. Right off the highway as you come into HMB from the city, you can’t miss the adorable Barn.

Jersey Joe’s Coastside Hoagies

It’s more of a local’s fave if you’re not in the mood for seafood or burgers. Consistently good cheesesteaks and the garlic fries are a yummy addition too. Good for fuel after a hills hike.

Barbara’s Fishtrap

• Address: 281 Capistrano Rd Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Another staple of the go-to seafood restaurants in Half Moon Bay, Barbara’s is a quaint little space along the water that does fried seafood right. Their chowder is awesome too. Please be aware though that this it’s CASH ONLY. And be prepared for lines.

El Gran Amigo Taqueria

If you’re coming from SF, you might blink and miss this little gem off the side of the road before you hit HMB. It’s a simple authentic taqueria that makes great tacos and burritos. Don’t let the lean-to, small shack facade fool you. It’s delicious and quick.

Flying Fish Grill

Going last for a reason, this is a great lunch spot but also has a great oyster happy hour, so could be perfect for an early bird dinner. Their crab cheesy bread is amazing, but it’s good to order a few things on the menu for the table and try as much as you can.

Starting first on the list because this place is great for lunch or an early dinner. They do a fun beer and dinner pairing, and always have some creative mixes going on. Friendly and open atmosphere. Great vibe.

Jettywave Distillery

This newer addition is a grateful reprieve from some of the more well know touristy places. With suburb cocktails and small bites, this is the perfect stop before dinner in the Pillar Point area.

Moss Beach Distillery

Location is everything for this place. Tucked away on a cliffside, it’s a great spot to sit by the fire pit with a few appetizers and some signature cocktails and watch the sunset. Be prepared to dress warm and make reservations.

Cantina at San Benito House

With a great happy hour and friendly vibe, this is a great way to get an early dinner and some cocktails in. Order at the bar and find a spot to relax in the chill atmosphere.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company

Another obvious choice for the list because of its popularity and location. The beer is good, the food is good and you can’t beat the location. I’ve never gone wrong with the fish tacos but there are all kinds of things to try. If going for lunch or dinner dress warm. Both inside and outside can be chilly.

Seville Tapas

Sweet little tapas bar, perfect for foodies who like to try all the things. Yummy sangria and dog-friendly in the outdoor patio.

With a focus on local produce, the proposals are fresh and consistently good. Lots of seating while still having a romantic cozy ambiance. Highly recommend and make reservations if possible.

Try some Nepal flavors in a lively fun environment. I suggest checking out their Yelp page for an idea of the food, but I will say they take their flavors seriously with homemade spices and attention to detail and authenticity. A great option for vegetarian food in Half Moon Bay.

Another local favorite a little off the beaten less touristy path is some great Thai food. They deliver on the staples with a sweet friendly staff.

Don’t let the location fool you. Tucked away in the quiet mall in Pillar Point is this great Peruvian and Mexican food spot. They serve a mean cocktail and a great price point for a meal. Don’t be surprised if you see their food truck around the town as well.

Buying Safari MK tickets online

Safari MK indoor play and party venue has had a GREAT refurbishment n December 2021 as well as some additions to the already massive range of play equipment.  Remember we have an AWARD WINNING MENU so if you want to have a family meal, this is the venue for your trip out!

PEAK TWILIGHT OFFER:  Amazing value, up to 32% off normal peak entrance. After 4pm, entry time for up to 2 hours play until close, normally 6.00pm.  

OFF-PEAK OFFER - After school from 3:30pm - up to 27% off off peak tickets so a discount on a discount! Stay until we close, normally 6pm.

Tops Tips On Our Prices

We recommend booking online as there is an additional £1 per person charge for over-the-phone and on-the-door prices.  You also guarantee your space :-) 

All prices include 2.5 hours of play during peak times, and 3.5 hours of play during off-peak times. At the moment, we are unable to allow overstays and if you stay over your allotted time there is an overstay charge. 

Online peak times: normally weekends & school holidays.  Online discounted off-peak times: normally mid-week, term time

There is normally a really good discount at the end of the day.  The Twilight or After School discount where you can play until we close :-)
