How to Get to Spiez

Spiez Trains

Spiez is serviced by a train station so it’s easy to reach the small town, regardless of where you’re coming from. There are direct trains to Spiez from Interlaken, Zurich, Basel, and Bern, but you will need to switch trains if you’re traveling to Spiez from a different location.

If you’re flying into Switzerland, you’ll most likely land at Zurich airport. It’s the biggest and busiest airport in the country, with the most international flights . There’s a direct train from Zurich Airport to Spiez, and you can be at the beautiful lakeside town in under two hours.

The airport at Bern is the closest airport to Spiez, but it’s a much smaller airport than the one in Zurich so it’s not very likely you’ll land there if you’re traveling from overseas. In any case, if you do land in Bern, you can be in Spiez in about an hour – just take the bus from the airport to Münsingen, where you can get on a direct train to Spiez.

Driving to Spiez is also possible – this isn’t one of those car-free villages, so you can easily just rent a car and drive up to Spiez. You will need a vignette to drive on the Swiss motorways and highways. Driving is great if you want the freedom to explore other towns in the region, but it’s not really cheaper or faster than getting around by train.

Best Things To Do in Spiez

Need some ideas on how to spend your time in Spiez? This guide to the best things to do in Spiez covers all the town’s top attractions!

Spiez Castle

Spiez Castle

One of the best things about this lovely town is that you get to discover historical buildings during long walks along the lake shore. The historical castle of Spiez is easily the most popular tourist attraction and one of the highlights of any visit to the town.

The medieval castle boasts a beautifully landscaped garden, a castle museum, and a 39-meter tower with an observation deck that offers magnificent panoramic views of Lake Thun and the lush hills that surround it.

The Castle Museum is great if you want to learn more about the history of the castle’s location and its owners. There’s also the Castle Church, the Castle Park with a baroque herb garden, and the beautiful greenhouse.

One thing to note about the Spiez Castle complex is that many of the buildings are rented out for private events, so it might not be possible to do a tour during your trip. The castle is also a popular location for weddings thanks to its perfect location in this picturesque bay.

Spiez Vineyard Sensory Adventure Trail

The Spiez Vineyard Sensory Adventure Trail is an easy walking trail that can be completed in about an hour. If you want to explore the nature around Spiez but you’re not exactly one for mountain climbing, this is the best thing to do in the area. The trailhead is at Seestrasse near the winemaker’s cooperative building, just some 15 minutes away from the Spiez train station.

The trail boasts beautiful natural scenery with 12 informative boards that tell the story of winemaking in Spiez. Each board also has a QR code that, when scanned, displays a short film about the life of Spiez winemakers. It’s an educational experience, but also a great opportunity to discover the fabulous scenery surrounding this charming town.

Walk to Faulensee

There’s a lakeshore path to Faulensee from Spiez, and it’s one of the top things to do in the area if you want to get out and explore. The start of the path is near the playground in Spiez, and it takes only around 30 minutes to walk all the way to the other town.

The beautiful lake promenade boasts stunning scenery, with plenty of benches along the way for quick breaks. Don’t forget to stop every now and then to take in the mesmerizing panoramic views.

Take some time to explore Faulensee while you’re in the area. The town is small but very charming, and it boasts beautiful nature and stunning lake views. There’s not much to do there in terms of tourist attractions and landmarks, but it is a great place for lunch/dinner with fabulous views.

To get back to Spiez from Faulensee, you can just walk along the same path. Alternatively, you can take the bus back into town, if you don’t feel like walking for 2.5 kilometers – the bus will get you back to Spiez in about 5 minutes.

Spiez Lake

Spiez Lido is a lake shore swimming cove and one of the most popular places in the town. Most people who come to Spiez for swimming and sunbathing will spend the majority of their time at this beach, which offers beautiful views of Lake Thun and the Spiez Castle in the background.

The Lido is also home to Spiez outdoor pool, which boasts the longest slide in the Bernese Oberland. The pool is heated so it offers a comfortable swimming experience even when the weather isn’t perfect, and it’s very popular among vacation goers in Spiez.

In addition to the heated pools and easy access to Lake Thun, you can also play table tennis, beach volleyball, football, and basketball at the Lido. An on-site restaurant means you don’t have to leave the beach to get a drink or something to eat, so you can easily spend an entire day here just enjoying life.

Lake Thun Cruise

Spiez Lake Thun

One of the best things you can do in Spiez is a cruise on the deep blue Lake Thun. It’s possible to go on proper boat cruises that include a meal and drinks, but we’d recommend getting on a ferry to Neuhaus. This is cheaper than a proper cruise, and you still get to discover more than half of Lake Thun.

It’s only about 10 minutes by bus from Neuhaus to Interlaken, so if you have enough time in Spiez, take this opportunity to explore the beautiful town between lakes Thun and Brienz. Interlaken is much bigger than Spiez and it has more content for visitors, including landmarks, tourist attractions, but also all sorts of adventurous activities.

If you want to go parasailing, paragliding, ride jet skis, or even go bungee jumping, you’ll be able to in Interlaken. The town is immensely popular with outdoor lovers, and it’s one of the best places in the region for lovers of nature and adventurers.

You can head back to Spiez on a boat and get to see even more of the beautiful Lake Thun. Alternatively, it’s possible to travel by train and bus from Interlaken to Spiez, and the journey shouldn’t take more than 25 minutes.

Museum of Local History and Viticulture

If you are fascinated by the winemaking tradition of Spiez, you have to visit the Museum of Local History and Viticulture . It boasts detailed exhibitions on the winemaking tradition of the region as well as local history. Discover what life was like in Spiez centuries ago, and see which traditions passed the test of time.

This popular Spiez museum is located in a typical Simmentaler 18th-century house. There’s a fully equipped coopers’ workshop in the basement that can be visited, and which details the art of making wooden barrels. Other exhibitions throughout the house display what life was like in a typical farming household.

In addition to the main building, museum visitors are also invited to see the Trüel, which has the last remaining Spiezer barn with a spectacular grape press. This exhibition is dedicated to the equipment and process of making wine, and it’s very educational for people with a genuine interest in the process.

Niesen Mountain

Niesen Mountain

Spiez is popular among outdoor adventurers for its incredible surrounding mountains. Niesen is one of those – the pyramid-shaped peak is absolutely iconic, and it’s one of the best places to visit in the area if you want to enjoy a magnificent panorama of Lake Thun.

The mountain is popular for its scenic views, hiking, and biking trails. It’s possible to hike to the top of the mountain, but this adventure is suitable only for experienced hikers who aren’t afraid of grueling uphill trails.

There’s a much easier (and quicker) way of reaching the top of Niesen and it’s the funicular. From Spiez, take the train to Mülenen – it’s only about a five-minute ride, and the train station is just a few minutes away from the bottom station of the funicular. A train will then take you to the top of Niesen in about 30 minutes – the ride is incredibly scenic, and you can enjoy gorgeous views while ascending the mountain.

It’s worth noting that there’s a restaurant atop Niesen, which also happens to be one of the best mountain hotels in Switzerland ! Enjoy tasty local dishes while admiring the wonderful views from the top of the pyramid-shaped mountain – what’s not to love about this easy excursion from Spiez?!

Where to Stay in Spiez

Spiez Switzerland

Spiez is a very small town so the location of your hotel/apartment doesn’t matter too much. No matter where you stay, the top attractions will be within walking distance.

The best hotels in Spiez are all situated near the lake shore, with most mid-range and high-end options near the castle area. However, it’s important to note that the hotels and apartments that are situated outside the city center are just 10-15 minutes away from the lakeshore (on foot), so it might not be worth it to pay for a premium location.

On top of that, you can consider staying outside of Spiez, if you want to save some money. The villages nearby offer more affordable accommodation, and they’re all just a short walk or train ride outside the town.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Spiez

Spiez Waterfront

The best time to visit Spiez depends on why you’re traveling to the lakeside town. If you want to enjoy the beach, swim in the lake, and just have a great summer vacation overall, the best time to visit Spiez is June-August. July and August are the warmest months, with the best weather for swimming and sunbathing.

Spiez is most popular in May, so you might want to avoid a spring visit if you don’t want to deal with crowds. The town gets a lot of tourists in the summer season as well, with an average of 80% of visitors that it gets in May.

If you’re more interested in the popular winter sports resorts near Spiez, then travel to the lakeside town sometime in December-March. That’s when most winter sports resorts in the area are open, and you’re free to enjoy as much skiing, snowboarding, and sledging as you like.

Is Spiez Worth Visiting

Spiez Aerial

That depends on why you’re considering this town in the first place. If you want to travel to a calm lakeside town in Switzerland, Spiez is one of the best places in the country. It’s not packed with features and content, but it has just enough attractions to keep you occupied for a few days.

The town boasts an impressive mountain backdrop with numerous hiking and biking trails that are just waiting to be explored, so it’s a great place for all outdoor enthusiasts. If you want to spend your time in Switzerland exploring nature, climbing mountains, or just having fun on the lake, Spiez is a great town for you.

On the other hand, if you’d rather stay in a place full of content, maybe Spiez isn’t the best Lake Thun destination for you. Consider Interlaken instead – it’s a bigger town with more things to do, plus it has better connections to other towns in the area.

How to get to Spiez

Spiez is a beautiful town located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. I love how easily accessible it is via various modes of transportation:

Spiez is lucky to have a well-connected train station served by various trains from major Swiss cities such as Zurich , Geneva, and Bern .

The train journey from Zurich to Spiez takes as little as 1 hour 30 minutes, while the journey from Geneva to Spiez takes around 2 hours 20 minutes.

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

Good to know: You can get to Spiez from nearby Lauterbrunnen in under an hour by rail. Lauterbrunnen is a stop on the Wengernalpbahn Railway, one of the most scenic train rides in Switzerland .

The Wengernalpbahn Railway is included as part of the Swiss Travel Pass .

Spiez is easily accessible by car via the A6 motorway. The journey from Bern to Spiez takes around 30 minutes, while the journey from Zurich takes around 1 hour 45 minutes.

You can rent a car to explore the gorgeous Swiss towns from major car rental companies located at the airports or in the city centres.

Discover more of my favourite day trips from Zurich or unearth my pick of the best hotels in Zurich .

The nearest airport to Spiez is Bern Airport, which is located just over 30 kilometres away. You can take a train or a taxi from the airport to Spiez.

Alternatively, visitors can also fly into either Zurich Airport or Geneva Airport, which are located between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes away by train.

It’s also possible to reach Spiez by boat, as the town is located on the shores of Lake Thun. Boats operate from various towns on the lakeside, such as Thun and Interlaken .

Good to know: I’d recommend checking the timetable and booking tickets online on the BLS website .

Swiss Travel Pass

I know that travelling in Switzerland can be expensive, especially if you plan on visiting multiple cities or attractions.

Fortunately, the Swiss Travel Pass can help save you money while providing unlimited access to public transportation, including trains, buses, and boats – I’d really advise investing in one.

The Swiss Travel Pass is available for purchase for a duration of three, four, eight, or 15 consecutive days, and it provides access to over 90 museums and attractions in the country.

Additionally, children under the age of 16 can travel for free with a parent or guardian who has a Swiss Travel Pass.

Jungfraujoch train

One of the key benefits of the Swiss Travel Pass is that it eliminates the need to purchase individual tickets for each mode of transportation.

This can save time and hassle, especially for anyone who plans on travelling frequently during their trip.

Additionally, the pass allows for unlimited travel on scenic routes, such as the awe-inspiring Golden Pass Line or the bucket list worthy Glacier Express, which I think is just fantastic!

Good to know: The Swiss Travel Pass does not cover private mountain railways, cable cars, or other forms of transportation that are not part of the public transportation network.

However, pass holders can receive discounts on these types of transportation.

Best time of the year to visit Spiez

The best time to visit Spiez depends on the type of experience you are hoping for on your trip.

Spring (March – May)

Spring is my personal favourite time to visit Spiez, with the snow in the higher regions starting to melt and the flowers beginning to bloom.

The town is surrounded by luscious greenery, making it the perfect time to go on hikes and walks in the mountains and forests or visit the local gardens and parks.

Spiez also hosts various spring events, such as seasonal markets and the Spiez Tulip Festival.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is the peak season in Spiez, with warm temperatures and long days bringing visitors wanting to enjoy some outdoor activities.

The town is bustling with tourists during this time, and the lake is filled with boats and swimmers. You can enjoy hiking, cycling, and more in the surrounding mountains and forests.

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is a quieter time in Spiez, with fewer tourists and cooler temperatures. The town is surrounded by beautiful autumn foliage, making it a great time to explore the true natural beauty of the area.

This is a good time to visit the vineyards and taste the local wines, or simply sit back and relax by the lake. I think it sounds dreamy!

Spiez View

Winter (December – February)

Winter is a magical time in Spiez, with snowy mountains and frozen lakes creating a Swiss winter wonderland.

Now is the time to go skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the snow-covered landscape.

It’s worth noting that Spiez hosts its own Christmas market, so expect the town to be busier during the festive season. Although I think the increased number of visitors is worth it for the magical festive atmosphere!

Spiez Castle

This mediaeval castle is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Thun, providing an ideal spot to soak up the breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Spiez Castle was built in the 13th century and has stood the test of time. While visiting, you can explore the castle and learn about its engaging history through interactive exhibits and informative displays.

The castle’s chapel is particularly noteworthy, featuring beautiful stained glass windows that cast rainbow hues on the intricate wood carvings.

In addition to its immense historical significance, Spiez Castle has also become a popular venue for weddings and other events searching for a unique twist.

The castle’s picturesque setting and stunning architecture make it the perfect backdrop for a romantic ceremony or special celebration.

Good to know: If you’re taken by the castle’s immense history, I’d recommend opting for a professional guided tour to find out all there is to know.

2. Walk the Spiez Vineyard Sensory Adventure Trail

Spiez Vineyard Sensory Adventure Trail is a unique outdoor experience that allows you to explore the vast vineyards while engaging all of your senses.

It’s designed to showcase the beauty and history of the vineyards while providing an interactive and educational experience.

The trail is 0.96 kilometres long and along the way, you can stop at various stations that offer different sensory experiences and panels with QR codes to scan to learn more.

Spiez Vineyard Sensory Adventure Trail

These stations include tasting different grape varieties, smelling the different aromas of the vineyard, and feeling the different textures of the soil that is used.

My favourite part of the trail is the wine tasting station, where visitors can sample some of the local wines produced in the vineyards.

The wines are paired with local cheeses and bread, providing a true taste of the region. Note that this is only available on Wednesdays between 13:00 and 19:00 in the shop of the Viticulture Association, so time your walk right!

Good to know: The total ascent for this trail is around 50 metres, so this may not be suitable for people with mobility issues.

3. Take a stroll along the Spiez Promenade

I love taking a stroll along the lakeside promenade at Spiez. It’s scattered with cafés and restaurants too, making it an ideal walk to take if you want to stop off for a bite to eat.

It’s well-maintained, meaning that it is suitable for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy.

Spiez in Switzerland

Enjoy the stunning sights of Lake Thun’s bright blue waters glistening against a backdrop of magnificent mountains.

I’d recommend taking a moment to relax on one of the many benches on the promenade to simply soak up the beauty of the Swiss landscape.

Niesen Mountain

Tourists from all around the world visit Spiez to take on the challenge of ascending the Niesen Mountain.

Standing at 2,362 metres tall and part of the Bernese Alps, the Niesen Mountain offers unparalleled views of the surrounding Swiss landscape.

To reach the summit of Niesen Mountain, you can either take a funicular railway that takes you to the top in just 30 minutes (my option of choice!), or take up the challenge of the hike.

The funicular railway is the longest in Europe and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Once at the summit, you can enjoy an immense panoramic view of the Swiss Alps, Lake Thun, and the surrounding valleys.

Luckily, there is also a restaurant at the summit where you can indulge a delicious meal while taking in the breathtaking views and hikers can refuel.

Good to know: For the daredevils among us, paragliding activities are available at the summit – undoubtedly an unforgettable experience!

5. Experience a Lake Thun boat cruise

To experience the beauty of Spiez, I’d really recommend taking a boat cruise on Lake Thun.

The lake is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and fairytale towns , and the cruise offers breathtaking panoramic views that are hard to beat on land.

The boats depart from the Spiez harbour, and there are several different Lake Thun cruise options available to choose from.

Lake Thun Boats

My favourite option is a round trip to the wonderful town of Interlaken and back. On the way, you’ll pass by small Swiss villages, historic sites, and lush green forests.

During the summer months, there are also special sunset cruises available, which offer a romantic and unforgettable experience.

The boats depart in the evening and take you on a leisurely tour of Lake Thun as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Good to know: The boats themselves are comfortable and spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating available. Many also have a bar on board where you can purchase mid-cruise drinks and snacks.

6. Try your hand at watersports on Lake Thun

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just looking for a relaxing day on the water, I know you’ll find an activity to suit at Spiez’s Lake Thun.

Personally, I’d recommend a spot of kayaking on Lake Thun – simply rent a kayak and explore the lake at your own pace.

Spiez Lake

For those looking for a more thrilling experience, wakeboarding and waterskiing are also available on Lake Thun.

These sports are perfect for those who love a challenge and want to push themselves to the limit. Don’t worry – lessons are available from experienced instructors to help you get started.

Good to know: If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, I’d advise trying stand-up paddleboarding.

You can rent a board and paddle around the lake, taking in the beautiful scenery and enjoying the peacefulness of the water.

7. Go swimming at Spiez Lido

Opening times: May – September

  • Adults: CHF 6.60
  • Children: CHF 3.30
  • Apprentices: CHF 5.50

Spiez Lido

Spiez Lido is a popular spot for open-air swimming in Spiez – and I can see why. The lido is situated right on the shores of Lake Thun, and is an ideal spot for a refreshing dip on a hot summer’s day.

The lido has a large swimming pool, a children’s pool, and a diving board. Sun loungers and parasols are available, and I’m happy to report that the water in the pool is heated, making it comfortable for swimming even on cooler days.

Aside from swimming, there are plenty of other exciting activities available at the Spiez lido for the whole family. You can play beach volleyball or try your hand at table tennis and mini-golf.

There is a playground to keep little ones entertained and a restaurant serving up snacks, drinks and other refreshments throughout the day.

Good to know: The lido is easily accessible by public transportation, with a bus stop just a short walk away. There is also plenty of parking available for those who prefer to drive.

8. Release your inner child at the Toy Museum

Opening times:

  • April – October: Tuesday – Sunday 14:00 – 17:00
  • November – March: Tuesday – Sunday 14:00 – 16:00
  • Adults: CHF 8
  • Children under 12: free
  • Guided tour for up to 11 people: CHF 50

A must-visit destination for both toy enthusiasts and families with young children, the Toy Museum in Spiez houses a vast collection of toys spanning various eras and countries.

Visitors can explore the museum’s extensive collection of dolls, teddy bears, trains, cars, and other toys. The museum also has a play area where children (and adults) can interact with various toys and games.

I think the highlight of the Toy Museum is the model train exhibit featuring a large collection of model trains and railways, including a replica of the famous Swiss Jungfrau railway.

You can watch the trains in action and learn about the history of Swiss railways.

Good to know: The museum also hosts various events and workshops throughout the year. These events include toy-making workshops, puppet shows, and special exhibitions.

9. Walk to Faulensee

Spiez has a picturesque walkway that stretches for around 2.5 kilometres along the shores of Lake Thun to Faulensee, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the turquoise waters of the lake.

It’s one of my favourite spots in the area, and the path has plenty of benches and picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Plus, there are also barbecue pits for a sunset feast.

The walkway starts in Spiez and ends at Faulensee and is relatively flat, making it both wheelchair accessible and suitable for prams.

Dotted along the path are many impressive art sculptures, showing off the rich Spiez culture.

Start of the Walk to Faulensee in Spiez

One of the highlights of the walk along the Spiez pathway is the stunning view of the iconic Niesen mountain towering over the lake and providing a dramatic backdrop for photos.

If you’re brave enough, you can also take a dip in the lake from one of the designated swimming spots along the path or rent a paddleboat to explore the waters. I’ll admit, I couldn’t quite face the cold!

Good to know: The route finishes by the dock at Faulensee, so if you don’t feel up to walking back down the path, I’d recommend hopping on a boat or ferry for the return journey.

10. Indulge in a spa day at Eden Spiez

If you’re hoping for a relaxing and rejuvenating experience while you’re in Spiez, I’d highly recommend a visit to Eden Spiez is an absolute must. It’s where I stayed throughout my time in Spiez.

Located right in the heart of the town, this luxurious spa offers a range of delightful treatments and facilities to help you unwind, de-stress and feel pampered.

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a perfectly serene and tranquil atmosphere. The spa’s interior is tastefully decorated with calming tones and natural materials, helping to create a sense of complete peace and ultimate relaxation.

Found just a short drive away from Spiez, Diemtigtal Nature Park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

The park itself is home to some incredibly diverse plants and animals, including rare species, which you might be lucky enough to spot.

One of the most popular hiking trails in the park is the Niesen-Diemtigtal Panorama Trail.

This route takes you on a 12 kilometre journey through some of the park’s most beautiful landscapes, ascending almost 80 metres.

Seebergsee lake in Swiss Alps

Good to know: Alongside hiking and guided tours, Diemtigtal Nature Park offers a range of other activities, including fishing, horseback riding and adrenaline-fuelled mountain biking.

12. Take a day trip to Interlaken

Interlaken is one of my favourite Swiss tourist destinations located just under 20 kilometres from Spiez. Nestled between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the town is surrounded by the majestic Swiss Alps.

The Jungfrau Railway, which runs from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch, is one of the most famous train rides in the world, transporting you through tunnels and over bridges, offering breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps.

I’d recommend joining a guided day trip to Jungfraujoch for the ultimate experience.

Victoria Terrace Tuna Tartare

Frequently asked questions

Is spiez worth visiting.

Absolutely! I adored Spiez and was surprised at how quiet it was compared to other Swiss towns. It seamlessly blends old-world charm and history with astonishing natural beauty.

As well as having an incredibly rich local history and culture, there are plenty of things to do in Spiez that make it a worthwhile visit.

Spiez Travel Guide

What are the best day trips from Spiez?

What I love about Spiez is that it makes a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding Swiss towns and attractions.

You can easily take a train or drive to the nearby town of Interlaken , a popular tourist destination known for its adventure sports and stunning scenery.

The famous peaks and glaciers of the Jungfrau region make for another great day trip from Spiez.

For a more laid back day trip, I’d really recommend taking a boat trip to the picturesque town of Thun or visiting the charming village of Lauterbrunnen , known for its brilliant waterfalls and scenic hiking trails.

spiez tourist information

Gruyères is a fairytale-inspired mediaeval town in the rolling green hills of the Swiss countryside. Full of character – and cheese – this town is a great day trip from Spiez, taking under 1 hour 20 minutes by car.

Slightly further afield at 1 hour 30 minutes away, you can find Montreux , an intriguing Swiss town that has something for everyone – from a chocolate train to exhilarating watersports.

A similar distance away from Spiez is Lucerne , a serene town and true hidden gem of Switzerland.

Can you go skiing near Spiez in winter?

Yes, there are plenty of ski resorts near Spiez that offer a variety of snowy slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

The closest ski resort is the Aeschi Ski Area, which is less than a 10 minute drive from Spiez. It has 10 kilometres of ski runs and is the ideal starting point for families and beginners.

Gstaad

For more advanced skiers, I’d recommend the luxury ski resort of Gstaad is just over an hour’s drive away and offers a wide range of slopes and off-piste skiing.

The Jungfrau Ski Region, which includes the famous resorts of Grindelwald , Wengen, and Murren, is also easily accessible from Spiez and offers some of the best skiing in Switzerland.

Spiez itself is easy to discover just by "getting around". So you can catch this special "holiday feeling", which made Spiez a famous wellness and wellbeing location. Discover the "Spirit of Spiez" while walking - from the train station - towards the lakeshore and the castle. In 1954 Germany's football national team found this spirit too and won the world cup.

Don't forget to take a tour through the vineyards: There you'll get a great view all over the city, the lake and the whole panorama of the always snow-covered Alps.

Don't be shy: ask the people, where to go. Almost everyone speaks English, most speak French and some speak Italian. So ask them, where to go, where to get a drink or beer and where to spend the night or to enjoy the nightlife.

If you travel by car you'll be able to park in one of the many parking lots. For your first visit, you can park at the train station next to the tourist information office.

You will find more parking in the city centre (Coop, Lötschbergzentrum, Spiez-Park) and at the lake near the castle.

There's a cinema and a bowling centre, too.

There are many activities to do around the lake, as sailing, wind-surfing, river-rafting, bungee-jumping, biking, swimming, canyoning, climbing, paragliding - ask at the tourist office for reservation, rates and further details.

Drink [ edit ]

In summer, take a rest at the lake in the afternoon and check out the nightlife of Spiez's suburbs Thun or Interlaken. For a drink, choose some of the many bars in Spiez and don't forget to taste the local "Spiezer" wine . This wine is an excellent choice with your meal. It is produced from the vineyards around Spiez and is available in white or red.

The local beer, called Rugenbräu , is brewed in Interlaken. Great taste with the typical alpine freshness.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN SPIEZ, SWITZERLAND

SPIEZ TRAVEL INFO – WHAT TO DO + MORE INFO

Table of Contents

If you thought Switzerland is all tiny villages of wooden houses perched on mountain tops the town of Spiez will surprise you!

Located on the shores of Lake Thun , the atmosphere in Spiez is very unique and almost Mediterranean. Though I have traveled extensively in Switzerland and been to all parts and areas of the country, I have not seen any place like Spiez. Here you have a French Riviera atmosphere nestled amongst the Swiss Alps . What a beautiful combination.

Besides the natural scenery of lush hills and vineyards, this small town of 12000 inhabitants boasts some gorgeous landmarks.

No surprise, I highly recommend adding Spiez to your Switzerland itinerary .

Also, Spiez makes a perfect base for day trips . Due to its location, trains normally pass Spiez in the direction of Zermatt , Kandersteg, Montreux , and more. Basing yourself in this pretty village makes getting around very easy.

Keep reading to find out more about one of the most beautiful towns in Switzerland : the best things to do in Spiez, and some useful travel tips.

SPIEZ TRAVEL INFORMATION

Spiez is located in the German-speaking canton of the Bernese Oberland region, which is more or less in central Switzerland.

It sits on the southern shores of emerald-green Lake Thun , approximately halfway between the towns of Thun and Interlaken, at 558 meters (1,830 feet) above sea level. At a short distance to the south, the impressive Alps are a magnificent panorama.

HOW TO GET TO SPIEZ

Spiez is easily reachable via boat, trains, buses, and cars.

SPIEZ TRAIN STATION

  • Though there are many trains running through Spiez train station, it is a small train station that you can easily navigate through.
  • Trains from Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost as well as from Lake Geneva (Montreux), Bern, and many other Swiss destinations stop here.
  • The train station stands at 628 meters above sea level – if you get out of the train station you have a beautiful view of Spiez Castle, Spiez, and Lake Thun.
  • You have to walk about 10 minutes downhill until you reach the main attractions at the lake.

SPIEZ BUS STATION

  • Alternatively, you can take a bus to Spiez. They stop at the Spiez train station but if you do not want to walk all the way down to the promenade, then take another bus.

SPIEZ BOAT STATION

  • Another scenic way to reach Spiez (yes, buses and trains offer nice window views) is via boat. Located on the shores of Lake Thun, the boat station is just at the promenade.
  • Boats run more often in the summer months but also in the winter months (1-3 times a day). By boat, you can get to Thun, Interlaken, St.Beatus Caves, or many other villages on the shores of Lake Thun.
  • Driving along the shores of northern shores of Lake Thun is a highlight. So getting to Spiez by car is another option to get to Thun. Parking – especially on busy days – might be tricky but there are (paid) parking spots near the promenade if you get there by car.

SWISS TRAVEL PASS

If you use public transportation, I recommend getting a Swiss Travel Pass . I visit Switzerland often, and most of the time I get one – even if it’s a road trip. It is only for non-Swiss residents though.

  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to use trains and buses without any extra costs.
  • You can also do boat cruises without additional costs – including a cruise on Lake Thun with regular boats.
  • It also gives you a 50% discount on most mountain rides (you can get up via cable car/funicular for half of the price, and if you follow my tips, you will need it twice).

The initial prices for a Swiss Travel Pass are quite high – but it pays for itself if you get around via public transportation and are active in Switzerland for more than three or four days.

For me, it usually makes sense as I am very active and use public transportation/mountain rides often (even if I road trip Switzerland ). I also love boat rides – which means many, many boat cruises for me whenever I have a Swiss Travel Pass. Check out prices for a Swiss Travel Pass here.

If you stay overnight in Spiez, you will get a Guest Card that allows you to use the buses in Spiez for free. However, if you plan to do day trips and a Lake Thun boat cruise, a Swiss Travel Pass might be the better option that helps you save money.

WHERE TO STAY IN SPIEZ

Spiez is rather small but given its perfect location, quite busy. If you want to visit in the main season (summer) I suggest booking quite early before hotels are fully booked.

  • La belle vue Boutique Hotel & Cafe is located uphill, close to the train station, and offers great views of Lake Thun and Spiez Castle. It just takes a few minutes to get to the harbor area and its proximity to the train station is great if you plan some day trips from Spiez.  Find out more and check out rates here.
  • Hotel Restaurant Seegarten-Marina is situated right on the shore of Lake Thun. Most rooms offer panoramic lake and mountain views – plus, it has a lakeside restaurant which is perfect for enjoying more great views! Check out rates here.

Castle of Spiez

Spiez is small so you will not find an endless list of things to do in Spiez, but believe me, you will get to see some beautiful spots!

VISIT SPIEZ CASTLE

Switzerland might be famous for its mountains and lakes, but it is also home to some pretty historic castles. The beautiful Spiez Castle is built right by the lakeside. With its imposing tower, it really looks like a castle from a fairy tale.

Beautiful Spiez Castle one of the most beautiful castles in Switzerland

The view from the top is just amazing! You have to climb some stairs, but it’s definitely worth it. From there you also have some stunning views of the pyramid-shaped Niesen Mountain .

View from Spiez Castle of Mount Niesen

Enjoy the beautiful garden in front of the castle – a perfect place to relax and soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

You can visit the castle which houses furnished rooms dating between the 13th and the 18th century, including a wood-paneled Renaissance room and an early Baroque banquet room. The exhibitions showcase the history of the location and the castle owners.

The castle church nearby is open to the public – this early Romanesque church was built around the year 1000! Lots of events take place there, including concerts. The garden with roses and fountains makes this place even prettier.

  • Open only in spring and summer. Check out more here.
  • Calculate a couple of hours to explore and enjoy the area

SPIEZ PROMENADE

Wherever you are in Spiez, make sure to walk towards the “harbor“. The promenade here is one of the prettiest in Switzerland and here you will experience some Mediterranean vibes (especially in the warmer months) with all the palms, flowers, and sailing boats while you are in central Switzerland.

Spiez Promenade, French Riviera

A couple of benches invite you to enjoy a day at the lake – alternatively, bring your own drink and something to eat and snatch one of the benches.

Spiez promenade

The view: priceless . Especially the view of Niesen Mountain is just superb!

At the promenade, you also have the boat stop station.

SPIEZ BAY

The bay of Spiez has so much more to offer apart from the promenade and the fantastic, fantastic views.

Bay of Spiez in Switzerland

Play some beach volleyball, handball (playground free to use), or some Pétanque, or enjoy some minigolf. It is a perfect place for active people – however, I admit, this is not for the rainy days in Spiez.

  • Some of the activities can only be done from April to October.

SPIEZ LIDO

Like almost any town in Switzerland, Spiez has its own lido. You might be wondering what a lido is?!

A lido is a public outdoor swimming pool and surrounding facilities, or part of a beach where people can swim. In Switzerland, a landlocked country, lidos are often right on the shores of a lake which allows swimming at the lake but some have pool areas as well.

The Spiez Lido, with its lakeside lawn and sun loungers, comes with great views of Spiez Bay, the castle, and the surrounding mountains.

You can choose whether you want to swim in Lake Thun or in the heated pool which also has several diving boards and the longest water slide in the Bernese Oberland (86 meters long).

  • The lido is open daily from May to September – tickets for adults are about 7 CHF.

LAKE THUN BOAT CRUISE

  • Free with a Swiss Travel Pass

A boat tour on Lake Thun is a must-do activity in Spiez.  As I have probably mentioned before (because I keep saying it); Lake Thun is one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland . And hopping on a boat will allow you to experience its beauty from a different angle.

Lake Thun at Spiez boat station

Lake Thun is located between Interlaken and Thun, with Spiez in between. With more than 48 square kilometers, it is the largest of Swiss lakes located within a single canton (Bernese Oberland).

Lake Thun has some stunning scenery and gorgeous towns & villages to offer.

If you do a Lake Thun boat tour (complete tours take about 1,5 hours even if you do not get off, as the lake is so huge), you will get to see these along the shores of Lake Thun.

You could get out in Interlaken (though there are many great spots to get out) and then do a Lake Brienz boat tour or explore Lake Brienz.

SPIEZ VINEYARD SENSORY ADVENTURE TRAIL

One of the hikes you can easily do from Spiez includes a vineyard hike. You will see the vineyards which surrender Spiez Castle but there is more.

Vineyards at Spiez Castle

You can find out about wine production at the Spiez vineyard when you follow the themed trail with 12 information boards which gives visitors information about the wine production while enjoying breathtaking views across Lake Thun and the castle.

Spiez Castle with the lake, alps in background on hiking

It is quite an easy hike that comes with a fantastic panorama – do not miss out on this hike that takes about 1,5/2 hours with little downhill or uphill hiking.

  • Starting point: At Spiez Castle, just before the Rebbaugenossenschaft cooperative on Schlossstrasse, turn left into Rebbergweg. The Unteres Räbhüsli is located on the left-hand side at the start of the vineyard.

WALK TO FAULENSEE

From the harbor, a path leads along Lake Thun in the direction of Interlaken. It is a beautiful walk between the lake and the woods, sometimes with a small pebble beach, until the neighborhood of Faulensee.

Faulsensee boat station

If you are looking for some relaxation, this is the perfect place: just sit at one of the numerous benches and admire the wonderful scenery.

While I have never visited myself, the Toy Museum is a popular place to visit in Spiez near Thun. Twelve rooms feature many children’s games from 1850 to 1960 – a place where visitors can embark on a journey into the world of childhood from times gone by.

Since 2005, you will find dolls, teddy bears, construction sets, play shops and kitchens, trains, model cars, tin soldiers, children’s books, social games, and much more at this museum.

This is probably not only interesting for kids (to see what previous generations, including grandparents, played with) but also for people of all ages.

  • Ticket prices are around CHF 8 for adults. There is a discount if you have a Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Opening hours : Tuesday to Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm, from October to the end of March from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. Closed on Mondays and from 21st – 24th of Juni
  • Check out the website for more information.

WATERSPORT ACTIVITIES

If you have such a stunning lake just in front of you, you will miss out if you do not spend time on Lake Thun. While I have recommended a Lake Thun boat cruise already, there are many more options to enjoy Lake Thun – water sports activities are big here.

Watersports on Lake Thun from Spiez

If you don’t have your own equipment, you can rent canoes, SUPs, motor- and sailing boats, pedalos, or Zealanders.

Yes, that is quite a lot – especially the Zealanders are quite unique and can be described as electrical boats in the shape of a little van. As mentioned, Spiez is not your regular Swiss town.

NIESEN MOUNTAIN

One of the most distinctive mountains on the shores of Lake Thun is the Niesen Mountain at almost 2400 meters above sea level. The pyramid-shaped mountain is one of my favorite mountains in all of Switzerland and when you are in Spiez you will actually always see it.

Interlaken places to visit near Interlaken, Switzerland

And the best: You can get on top of Niesen Mountain without much effort.

Yes, like many other mountain summits , Niesen is also quite accessible by cable car/funicular. So, my tip – look at it first but then get up via cable car or hike up all the way.

On top is tons to do and see: including some nice hiking trails and paragliding. You will see the many paragliders from there, but it is also very family-friendly and has a restaurant on top, making it a great place to spend a few hours.

From Spiez, you can   – and you should – also visit Thun for at least a few hours.

Thun town center at Lake Thun

Thun is a town on the western shores of Lake Thun – and name giver for the lake. It is more lively and bigger than Thun – actually, it is the biggest town in the area (and bigger than Interlaken).

You can get to Thun by bus, train, or boat –   so head to Thun and explore different castles (like Schloss Schadau or Thun Castle) and the Old Town. My highlight was the view from Thun Castle – it is just very, very pretty!

Thun is very lovely and totally different than Spiez and one of my top tips for Spiez excursions.

INTERLAKEN

The famous, famous town of Interlaken is the town, everybody, flocks to. And rightfully so. The town itself is not the most spectacular as it is not a very charming old town (sorry Interlaken – I still love you) but the landscapes and choices of outdoor adventures are spectacular. Thus it is often called the capital of adventure.

Interlaken Where to go, Höhenmmatte

If you plan to spend time in Interlaken, get to Interlaken West by boat. Just at the boat station is the Harder Kulm funicular station. Harder Kulm is a mountain standing at 1322 meters above sea level. From there, you have a fantastic panorama of Lake Thun AND Lake Brienz . Alternatively, you can also hike up – it is one of the easier hikes but it is quite a steep uphill hike.

After these amazing views, you can then head to Höhenmatte – a beautiful park area with fantastic views of the famous Jungfraujoch Mountain.

There you will – on sunny days even more so – see all the many paragliders who seem to have an amazing eye bird’s view!

Interlaken is located on the northeastern shores of Lake Thun and you can easily visit by boat, but also by train or bus.

  • Check out my Interlaken post for more travel inspiration.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON  SPIEZ ACTIVITIES

Spiez Castle. the lake promenade, together with its picturesque harbor with small boats and sailboats – the many sports activities like hiking and windsurfing, visiting nearby places, or a cruise on Lake Thun –   there are tons of things to do in Spiez!

Spiez makes a great base for fun day trips but also is a pretty village by itself, well worth visiting and exploring.

On the slopes of Spiez’s local mountain a one-hour viticultural trail reveals the secrets of winemaking in a fun way.

The start of the trail is just 15 minutes from the train station, behind the winemaker’s cooperative building on Seestrasse. You can walk the full one-hour adventure trail or just part of it, as you wish. Flyers are provided in small boxes that direct visitors to the 12 information boards. Alternatively, you can also use your smartphone for an interactive experience. Scan the QR code on the boards to watch 12 short films that portray a year in the life of a winemaker.

Making a small detour to the Spiezberg is highly recommended for the impressive views of Lake Thun and Spiez itself. If you’re looking for a cultural experience, pay a visit to Spiez Castle or drop into the viticulture museum to find out more about winemaking. On hot summer days, Spiez Lido on Lake Thun is the perfect place to cool off.
