Johnny Depp Announces Summer 2023 UK Tour with Hollywood Vampires Band amid Shows with Jeff Beck

Also featuring Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen, Depp's band added six UK dates to their 2023 summer tour — more than four months since his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard

Johnny Depp 's Hollywood Vampires band has added a string of UK concert dates to its upcoming 2023 tour.

In a video posted to social media on Monday, the 59-year-old actor announced the rock group — which also features Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen — will be performing at six arena venues across England in July 2023 with special guests Seether and The Tubes.

Tickets go on presale for the supergroup's fan club on Tuesday at 10 a.m. BST, then venue presales launch Wednesday at 10 a.m. BST for Glasgow, Manchester and London and the following day at 10 a.m. BST for all other venues. General on-sale tickets become available Friday at 10 a.m. BST. Information regarding tickets can be found at Hollywood Vampires' website .

The new tour dates, along with previously announced European concerts set to take place in June 2023, were originally planned for 2021 before Hollywood Vampires canceled all their shows due to pandemic travel restrictions. "We kept trying to make it happen, but unfortunately due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 travel restrictions, it is just not possible," wrote the band in a March 2021 statement.

Hollywood Vampires formed in 2012 and has since released two albums, 2015's Hollywood Vampires and 2019's Rise .

Earlier this month, Depp and Jeff Beck, who released an album together over the summer, began their U.S. tour (which goes through November and has stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville and more) at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. — just over four months since a verdict was reached in his Virginia defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard . His attorneys from the Fairfax, Virginia, trial, Camille Vasquez and Benjamin Chew, attended the show and posed for photos backstage wearing VIP passes.

On June 1, the jury sided mostly with Depp and awarded him more than $10 million in damages. They found that Heard, 36, defamed him in her 2018 op-ed about domestic abuse, though she didn't mention him by name in the article. Additionally, Heard won one of her defamation counterclaims, awarded $2 million in damages. They are both appealing the verdicts.

Earlier this month, Depp spoke to SiriusXM about how it's felt to play concerts again for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. "Jeff very simply and kindly — and his wife, Sandra — just took me into their house, and I lived with them for months and months and months. Then, we went on the first tour together," he said. "For me, having had to deal with other things at the same time, once those things are down the road and you drop into the tour, it's like you're home."

Johnny Depp set to take the stage in Glasgow as jury ponders verdict

Depp will join guitar legend Jeff Beck onstage at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall on June 3.

Hollywood star Johnny Depp is set to join Jeff Beck onstage in Glasgow just days after jurors began deliberations in his legal case against Amber Heard.

Depp first popped up onstage at Beck’s London and Sheffield dates earlier this week.

Fans found his initial appearance at the Sheffield date particularly surprising, as it was only two days after final evidence was given at his six-week court case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

He then went on to join Beck onstage for two shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

A PR agency managing the ‘Isolation’ tour confirmed to STV News that the Pirates of the Caribbean star will be joining all remaining dates of the tour’s UK leg.

Depp will join Beck onstage at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on June 3.

It comes as the world awaits the verdict in his highly-publicised defamation trial against Ms Heard.

Depp is suing the Aquaman actress for $50m over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse”.

The article does not mention Depp by name, however his legal team says it falsely implied he abused the actress while they were together.

“Musical soulmates” Depp and Beck released their first single as a duo in 2020, a re-imagining of John Lennon’s ‘Isolation’.

At the time, Beck said that fans would hear more from the duo “in a little while”, but hoped they would find “some comfort and solidarity in our take on this Lennon classic”.

Upcoming UK tour dates:

  • Thursday, June 2, 2022 – Gateshead (The Sage)
  • Friday, June 3, 2022 – Glasgow (Royal Concert Hall)
  • Saturday, June 4, 2022 – Manchester (O2 Apollo)
  • Monday, June 6, 2022 – Birmingham (Symphony Hall)
  • Tuesday, June 7, 2022 – York (Barbican Centre)

Johnny Depp has officially been added to the line-up for the remainder of Jeff Beck’s UK tour, after he won his multi-million dollar lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard .

In what is the first step of the Hollywood actor, 58, being "given my life back", Johnny will officially perform alongside his guitarist pal in Gateshead, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and York.

Johnny celebrated his legal win at a Newcastle's Bridge Tavern pub with Jeff and singer Sam Fender, enjoying a meal of fish and chips before the jury read out their verdict at Fairfax County Court in Virginia.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star was awarded compensatory damages of $10million (£8 million) and a further $5 million (£4 million) in punitive damages, following a six-week long blockbuster defamation case.

Depp had jetted across to the U.K as he awaited their verdict and surprised fans as he gave an impromptu performance at Sheffield City Hall on Sunday night, before taking to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall.

And after proving a hit with the audience, Johnny has now officially been added to the line-up for the remainder of Jeff's UK tour.

The actor sued Heard, 36, over a newspaper article titled: “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

The article did not mention Depp by name, but his lawyers said it falsely implied he physically and sexually abused the Heard while they were together.

In his statement after his win, issued through his spokesperson, Depp said: “Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed.

“All in the blink of an eye.

“False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me. It had already travelled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.

“And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.”

Heard appeared downcast as the ruling was read out. She was awarded $2million after proving one of her counterclaims.

Following the verdict, Amber said she felt “heartbroken” by the ruling, adding she was “sadder still” that she had “lost a right” to “speak freely and openly”.

“The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband,” she said in a statement.

“I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women.

“It is a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.

“It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously.

“I believe Johnny’s attorneys succeeded in getting the jury to overlook the key issue of freedom of speech and ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in the UK.

“I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”

Hollywood star Johnny Depp , awaiting a ruling in a US defamation case involving his former wife Amber Heard , turned up on stage at a rock concert in British city of Sheffield on Sunday, surprising an unsuspecting crowd.

Depp appeared with English guitarist Jeff Beck to perform music covers, including John Lennon’s Isolation , a track on which they collaborated and released in 2020.

The Telegraph reports that Depp is planning to join Jeff Beck for the rest of his concert dates in the UK.

Jurors in Virginia deliberating the defamation claims from Depp and Heard adjourned on Friday without returning a verdict.

They will resume discussions on Tuesday after the US Memorial Day holiday.

On his tour of the UK, the Pirates of the Caribbean star will probably miss the climax of his bitter court battle to appear in cities including Manchester, York, Birmingham and Gateshead.

Depp’s UK tour appearances are reportedly causing venues security concerns, as they expect to have to manage his diehard fans and supporters of Heard, who could protest outside.

The Telegraph reports that the Royal Albert Hall in London , where Beck plays twice this week, chose to increase security after learning Depp would be performing.

Depp, 58, sued the actress for $50 million, claiming she defamed him when she called herself "a public figure representing domestic abuse" in an opinion piece she wrote.

Heard, 36, countersued for $100m, saying Depp smeared her reputation when his lawyer called her accusations a "hoax".

WASHINGTON (7News) — Johnny Depp did not have a quiet Memorial Day weekend as he awaits a verdict from a Fairfax County jury in the $50M defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over allegations Amber Heard made about domestic abuse when she penned a 2018 opinion piece in the Washington Post about being a survivor of domestic abuse. Heard has filed a countersuit that includes a request for $100 million in damages. A Fairfax County, Va. jury will be asked to decide both claims as they return to deliberate Tuesday morning.

Twitter user Alain Mauri said, "Awesome concert as usual, with a great opening act and a special guest."

He previously testified that he came to Hollywood expecting to be a musician, Depp's true passion, TMZ said.

Johnny Depp has said he prefers living a quiet life in the United Kingdom, where he currently resides on an 850-acre estate in Somerset .

Following the Hollywood actor’s highly publicised defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard last year, Depp has now relocated to Somerset in southwest England. In 2014, the 59-year-old actor purchased the Downton Abbey -like estate for £13m, complete with 12 bedrooms and eight bathrooms inside a 19th-century style mansion, dubbed Somerset Mansion.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star opened up about his newfound introverted lifestyle in an interview for Somerset Life magazine’s April 2023 issue, in which he posed for a photoshoot on the 850-acre property.

“I just love places with character,” Depp told the magazine, per the Somerset County Gazette . “I have various houses in various places and they all mean something special. I don’t have them just to say I own them, I have them for use and because they are a bit special.”

The Somerset property boasts a great manor house surrounded by walled gardens and a dairy farm. The Sweeney Todd star shared that “one of the many things I love about Britain” is that “everywhere you go there is history and buildings with great character.”

Depp added that now he “can go into shops without being surrounded by people wanting selfies,” which he doesn’t mind “up to a point” but it can sometimes get “a little too crowded.”

“British people are cool and will greet you as if you are a neighbour – without going over the top,” he said. “I like going to places, seeing things and meeting people – but I’m not the great extrovert that people think.”

“In truth, I’m quite a shy person,” he continued. “That’s one of the great things about Britain, and especially Somerset. I can just be me – and that’s nice.”

When Depp purchased Somerset Mansion, he was newly engaged to Heard, whom he married in 2015 before they divorced in 2017. The former couple recently settled their contentious defamation case after the months-long trial was watched by viewers around the world.

Depp sued his ex-wife for $50m over a 2018 op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post that implied she was a victim of domestic abuse. Though she did not name Depp, he claimed her allegations have made it difficult for the actor to land movie roles. In June, a jury determined Heard defamed Depp on all three counts and awarded him $10m (£8.2m) in compensatory damages and $5m (£4.1m) in punitive damages. Heard was awarded $2m (£1.6m) in compensatory damages.

Heard then filed a notice of appeal one month after the initial verdict, with her attorney citing “errors” made by the court. However, the Aquaman star decided to withdraw the appeal last December, calling the decision to settle with Depp “very difficult”, and something that had required “a great deal of deliberation”.

Earlier this month, Depp was spotted at an antiques centre in Lincolnshire, where he arrived by helicopter and was taken on a private tour. The Fantastic Beasts actor bought three guitars, a skull-encrusted vase, and an easel during his visit to Hemswell Antiques Centres.

Owner Robert Miller told the PA news agency: “He just bought a lot of very quirky items. A desk chair, three guitars, paint sets, easels, a few pictures, posters, just a whole range of things for decorative items for his own personal property.”

Miller said he was told a special guest would arrive at 4.30pm that day, but had to conceal his identity because Depp “just wanted to relax and walk around without being bombarded by the general public”.

“We hosted refreshments for him and he was able to walk around,” Miller said. “It was great because he was his normal self and he was very relaxed and was able to spend time looking at things and playing on the guitars that he wanted to play on.

“He felt very at home.”

Johnny Depp's IN.2 Execs Talk ‘Jeanne Du Barry' UK Release, ‘Modi' Plans & Projects With Charlotte Colbert, Julien Temple & Murray Lachlan Young

EXCLUSIVE:  Johnny Depp's London-based film company IN.2 is adding a new string to its bow with the release this Friday of French historical drama  Jeanne du Barry.

Starring Depp as Louis XV opposite French actress and director Maïwenn in the titular role, the picture opened the Cannes Film Festival last year.

As per Cannes' stipulation for opening films, it released theatrically in France the same day, enjoying a successful run for distributor Le Pacte with the highest French gross for a Cannes opener since  The Great Gatsby  in 2013.

IN.2 will release the movie on 70 screens on April 19 across the UK in a campaign spearheaded by Head of Production Stephen Malit.

The UK release will be followed by the U.S. launch by Vertical Entertainment on May 2, which has confirmed 600 theatres so far.

Deadline caught up with Malit as well as IN.2 CEO Stephen Deuters and Development Coordinator Vivi Stone at the company offices in Notting Hill ahead of the UK premiere at London's Curzon Mayfair on Monday night.

Maïwenn and Johnny Depp at Jean du Barry UK premiere

Malit says the decision to handle the release came out of a conversation late last summer with sales supremo Vincent Maraval at French company Goodfellas, after only middling offers for the UK rights.

"I thought, 'Why don't we do it?' it’s a really good opportunity to have another aspect to IN.2. We're co-producers on the film and would be very careful in terms of money coming in and profit share afterwards," he recounts.

He bats back a question on whether negative press around the Johnny Depp V Amber Heard trial had deterred UK distributors from acquiring the film.

"I like to think everyone's moved on," he says. "I don't think it was anything to do with Johnny but rather because it's a French film. Even though it's got Johnny in it, it's a French-Language period drama. It would be very different if it were a Johnny film of a commercial nature."

Malit, who is the long-time producer of Julien Temple on films such as Oil City Confidentia l, London: The Modern Babylon and Suggs: My Life Stor y is drawing on his past experience in event cinema.

As well as organizing event screenings for those films he also produced the Glastonbury Festival's Cineramageddon drive-in cinema, through which he first connected with Depp when the actor was its inaugural guest of honor in 2017.

The veteran producer has put together an ad-hoc team for the Jeanne du Barry theatrical push in the UK, which includes veteran independent booker Martin Myer as well as Emma McCorkell and Cheyl's Mayer's Team PR agency.

"We got Vue, Odeon, a load of indies, we're happy," says Malit on the theatre bookings. ""Our target audience is your classic ABC1, from 40 to 70. It's a costume drama."

IN.2 has recut and simplified a trailer produced for Cannes and the French release and also kept Maïwenn, who co-wrote, directed and stars in the film, front and centre of the campaign.

The filmmaker travelled to London for the UK premiere and also participated in a sold-out event with Jeanne du Barry c ostume designer Jürgen Doering organized by the Cinema & Fashion platform at the Soho Hotel, exploring how they created the costumes in collaboration with Chanel.

"We've kept it very balanced and led a lot with Maïwenn. Johnny is on the poster too but we're not billing it as a comeback film or anything like that," says Malit of the campaign.

Although the UK market for non-English films is tough right now, Malit is upbeat saying he expects to turn a profit with the combination of theatrical and an eventual digital release.

He adds that the plan is for INA.2 to release more films in the future but could not confirm whether the company would go the same route with Depp's upcoming directorial credit Modi .

"It will be on a project-by-project basis," he says.

Modi update

On the set of Modi

IN.2’s main focus remains production.

Depp's Amadeo Modigliani bio-pic Modi , starring Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio as the Italian sculptor with Al Pacino and Steve Graham also in the cast, is currently in post-production.

"We sent an 84 second teaser to Berlin to whet the appetite and that seemed to go down quite well," says Deuters.

The film is currently wrapping editing and will soon head into post-production and sound, with IN.2 eyeing a fall festival launch.

"It’s most certainly a Johnny Depp film, with an amazing group of collaborators," he adds, citing costume designer Penny Rose (Pirates of the Caribbean ), art director Dave Warren ( The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus ) and cinematographers Nicola Pecorini and Dariusz Wolski.

Deuters describes the shoot in Budapest last summer as "a lot of fun" while Malit gives a shout out to Hungarian producer Viktória Petrányi and director Kornél Mundruczó's company Proton Cinema for their local support.

"They’re beautifully positioned for us, doing the top-end Hungarian art films and European films. They’re not simply a service company for the studios but actual filmmakers in their own right," says Malit.

"Through them we were able to access a ‘caring crew'. We provided the heads of departments from abroad but basically ran with the Hungarian crew."

Malit suggests the shoot was able to go-ahead fairly under the radar – even if there was excitement around the presence of Depp in the city – thanks to the fact so many other shoots were taking place there at the same time, including Dune 2.

"We only built the art studio in a studio, everything else was location," he says, adding that due to less urban development Budapest looks more like early 20th Century Paris than the real city these days.

IN.2 was first announced in 2021 as a sister company to Depp's U.S.-based banner Infinitum Nihil (headed by Sam Sarkar), on the back of a successful collaboration of Temple’s documentary Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan .

Deuters first connected with Depp in a support staff role on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , and then worked as his assistant before officially segueing into producing on war photographer bio-pic W. Eugene Smith Minamata.

He says Depp first started floating the idea of creating a European-based company as early as 2007.

"It was in his head for a long, long time and it wasn't necessarily about getting away from Hollywood. It was just about sort of just following the independent spirit and being able to be a bit freer," he explains.

"He's also spent a lot of time here on Sleepy Hollow and stuff like that, so he already had a connection with the country.”

Connecting with Malit at Glastonbury in 2017 was the turning point, says Deuters. Filmmaker Temple was the programmer on the Cineramageddon initiative and secured his long-time friend Depp as its star guest.

The meeting would lead to the making of the Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan about The Pogues frontman Shane McGowan who was also long-time friend of Depp.

"We all got on really famously and hung out a lot…. and said, let’s make a documentary on Shane McGowan. Johnny wanted to do it and Julian is obviously the great auteur for rock’n’roll films," says Malit.

The doc went on to win the Special Jury Award in San Sebastian and then released worldwide, with Magnolia Pictures taking North American rights, and was the catalyst for the creation of IN.2 with Depp as its President.

Three years on, the company has a raft of projects in various stages of development, with Deuters summing up the ‘modus operandi' as being  "American accessibility with European sensibility".

He says the vibe of the slate reflects the tone of Depp's earlier films such as Benny and Joon , Ed Wood , Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and later titles including The Libertine and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street .

"That sort of feral, pioneering spirit, something that doesn’t attach itself to formula," explains Deuters.

"We’ve got a multitude of different projects…. Period punk is a term we’ve thrown around a few times because a lot of the projects we’re developing tend to be period but with a modern bent," he adds.

Projects in this vein include IN.2's first TV drama, an Elizabethan era piece to which writer Oliver Lansley is attached with Temple on board as showrunner, as well as the second feature from artist and director Charlotte Colbert , who made waves with horror mystery She Will .

"We can't say too much right now because they're in different stages of development but they all have a European art house sensibility with heavy hitters attached," says Development Coordinator Stone.

The company is also developing a first feature by UK poet and stand-up performer Murray Lachlan Young.

"It's an original story with poetry involved," says Stone. "I've never seen anything quite like it."

Malit notes that the projects are financed on a case by case with a mixture of equity finance, pre-sales soft money, private investors and industry backers including Spanish distributor A Contracorriente Films.

"We operate like a normal, independent film company," he says.

Deuters says that while Depp may have a small cameo role in Temple's upcoming drama series, his appearance in the IN.2 projects is not a given.

"We don't want to be reliant on Johnny. If he takes a liking to something, then he gets first dibs but while we don’t rely on Johnny. It’s his company but we’re on our own road," he says, adding that Jack Whigham at Range Media Talent Agency remains the first port of call for third party producers wishing to solicit Depp for a role.

Depp had the last word as he jokingly presented Gilliam to the assembled photographers and videographers, declaring “Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tim Burton.”

The actor also met briefly with aspiring filmmakers from the London branch of the Ghetto Film School, which also has hubs in Los Angeles and New York, before heading into the screening.

Depp was at Monday night’s premiere in the company of Maïwenn, who co-wrote, directed and stars in the historic love story that opened the Cannes Film Festival last year.

Maïwenn plays the titular courtesan opposite Depp in the role of King Louis XV, who falls under her charm and establishes her at the Court of Versailles as his last official mistress.

Depp told Monday night’s audience that he had been surprised when Maïwenn approached him for the role of Louis XV.

“Instantly what happens in your brain is that you go back to Eastern Kentucky … you realize that you come from the ‘ombelico,’ ‘nombril,’ the belly button of nowhere and you’re playing the king of France,” he said.

Maïwenn recounted how Jeanne du Barry was a passion project driven by her fascination with the 18th century heroine and parallels she felt between their lives.

“It’s a movie that I have wanted to make since 2016, and I was obsessed by Jeanne du Barry for many years because she was a feminist before everybody else,” the filmmaker told the audience.

Speaking with The Independent , the French director, writer and actor spoke about the film, in which she plays a sex worker in 18th century France, who becomes the mistress to King Louis XV, played by Depp.

Maïwenn also opened up about the crew’s experience of working with the Pirates Of The Caribbean star.

“I have to be honest. It’s difficult to shoot with him,” she shared.

“All the crew were scared because he has a different kind of humour and we didn’t know if he was going to be on time, or if he was going to be OK to say his lines,” she continued.

“I mean, even if he was there on set, on time, the crew were afraid of him.”

She detailed Depp’s accent development for the movie, and how she was led to cut some of his dialogue, saying: “There was no time for rehearsals. I asked for time but, for whatever reason, he wasn’t available”.

“He had a coach, but he couldn’t work with her beforehand,” she continued. “So. OK. I discovered his accent wasn’t perfect. So a few times I decided to cut his lines. But that also happened with the French actors. It happens!”

She expanded on the pair’s relationship since wrapping the film, which was released in the UK and Ireland on April 19, and is set for a US release on May 2.

“There’s been no normal relationship since the shoot,” she said. “Johnny for me is a huge genius but he’s in another world. I cannot communicate with him.”

Maïwenn revealed in the interview that the pair had a close relationship prior to making the film. “Before the shoot, me and Johnny were texting and talking on the phone. It was completely simple and natural.”

As quoted in The Hollywood Reporter , Depp also praised Maïwenn, who co-wrote, directed and produced Jeanne du Barry , saying that she did “a beautiful job on set”.

Johnny Depp: ‘I’m not remotely close to being normal’

Johnny Depp poses for portrait photographs for the film 'Jeanne du Barry', at the 76th international film festival, Cannes, southern France,

‘I’ve been scrutinised since I was 23 years old . Now I’m kicking 60 in the ass. That’s a long time!’

Johnny Depp , one of world’s most famous faces, is relaxing – adorned with tattoos and silver rings – on a hotel rooftop on the French Riviera. He’s conversational, friendly and refreshingly honest.

‘I’ve been very lucky and I can’t complain about anything. None of it. I won’t,’ he says.

But fame does funny things to a man. ‘The thing hits you and then you can’t go anywhere without people looking at you. And that’s a very interesting way to grow up. But after 38 years of something like that…’

He trails off for a second, collecting his thoughts. ‘The first thing that’s really mad is to expect anyone who’s lived in that kind of situation to be anything remotely close to normal.

‘Now, to make matters worse,
I wasn’t normal before that. So I’ve had to adapt my world into the way that I have to live. How do I live? I live behind windows. I live behind car windows, train windows, plane windows, hotel room windows… f***ing windows!

Portraits - Day Three - The Red Sea International Film Festival 2023

With the release of Depp’s new movie, Jeanne Du Barry , the word ‘comeback’ is on everyone’s lips.

Certainly, it’s a treacherous period of his career, following the ugly fallout around his marriage to former wife Amber Heard.

In 2020, he lost a libel case against The Sun newspaper, which branded him a ‘wife beater’.

Dropped from the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, he’s been persona non grata in Hollywood ever since.

For the past few years, though, he has found work in European cinema – films such as Waiting For The Barbarians, Minamata and now Jeanne Du Barry.

When French director Maïwenn asked him to play King Louis XV, opposite her turn as the ruler’s last mistress, Jeanne, Depp says his thought process went something like this: ‘Haven’t done this before. There’s a possibility of total failure. I could fall flat on my face. I like it! It’s what
I should do.’

The Rum Diary Premiere - London

Speaking his role in French, learned from his time with singer-actress Vanessa Paradis – the mother of his children, Lily-Rose and Jack – Depp dug in.

‘I was in the trenches with Maïwenn and the rest of the crew,’ he says. ‘I did the best I could. I did what I felt was right for the character, and for the story and for Maïwenn. So if it works, I’m a lucky motherf***er, really lucky.’

Now 60, Depp was surprised he was invited to play such an iconic figure in French history. ‘Actually, when we met, I asked Maïwenn, “Are you sure you don’t want a French actor?”’

The film is a fine balance of drama with comedy, not least when every courtier shuffles backwards as they leave the room, because no one is allowed to turn their back on King Louis.

‘He was a complicated guy. I thought it was important to start defining the character, showing he was not, as they say, completely “feather in the ass”,’ says Depp. ‘There was a humanity to him. It’s as if… his appendix burst and suddenly everything changed.’

The film marks a rare period piece for Depp, unless you count the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise in which he played Jack Sparrow.

Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis

Shooting in France’s dramatic Palace of Versailles was a major plus, he says.

‘When you’re walking through Versailles and you hear in the distance the din, the murmur – the people, the extras – and then you turn the corner and you’re in a mirrored corridor, and suddenly it’s time travel. It was quite shocking but oddly it was never uncomfortable. It felt like home.’

Is it any wonder he felt like a king? For much of his career, Depp
has experienced what it’s like to
be revered.

‘By and large, for the majority of the years I’ve been wandering around aimlessly talking to people, they really want the same thing,’ he says.

‘They don’t want to be fed dreck. They’re happy when they experience something new or different. So that’s why I’ve always felt, as an actor, it’s your responsibility. When you come out of the gate each time… you’re putting as much at stake as anybody.’

Given he hasn’t worked in Hollywood for years – ‘they threw me in the bin’ – Depp isn’t fussed about ripping into the studio heads.

JOHNNY DEPP in JEANNE DU BARRY (2023), directed by MAIWENN.

‘They’re disposable and they realise it. Glorified accountants who have the ability to press the green light and make studio films… but they press the green light, they spent s***loads of money. Budgets are ridiculous on these films… some romantic comedy with two very popular people. People – the real people – they’re sick of it.’

Whether they will ever get to see Depp again in a big studio movie is another matter.

The spiky director Ruben Östlund ( Triangle of Sadness ) suggested in an interview last week that anyone planning to use a movie camera should need a licence, like a gun owner. The logic may need extending in the wake of French historical biography Jeanne du Barry . A permit should surely be required for this scale of powdered wigs.

Proceed at your own risk, then, with the perfumed study of the famed courtesan and lover of Louis XV. Actor and filmmaker Maïwenn directs herself in the title role; a serene Johnny Depp plays the king, speaking French in a bass murmur. The mode is pointedly classical. Beginning, middle and end all arrive, and very much in that order.

Still, as befits a tale of social climbing, the movie is notably quick to get to Versailles. (It is otherwise not in a hurry at all.)

French historians may have cause to squint, but at least early on, the film’s blank gaze can be persuasive. A marriage to Comte Guillaume du Barry is painted as an exercise in knowing cuckoldry, the French aristocracy offering up their wives to “Louis the Beloved”. Depp is grandly understated as a character used to people hanging on his every gesture.

Installed at Versailles, the heroine is Mean Girl ed by the king’s mediocre daughters and an easily led Marie Antoinette. But the movie is still endlessly smitten with the splendour of the palace and the glam costumery, much of it created by Chanel, a partner of the production.

Somehow, through it all, Madame du Barry remains an enigma. A vague positioning as a prophet of feminism and social mobility seems a stretch. “Harlotry is better than cooking” is the closest we get to a credo. And for a relationship founded on sex, Maïwenn and Depp spend a lot of time taking tea. Most of the actual biographical detail, meanwhile, comes in voiceover, delivered in the tone of a weary Versailles tour guide, still some way from their next cigarette break.

In UK cinemas from April 19 and US cinemas in May
