City sports travel guides

Other than seeing the games, our favorite aspect of sports travel is seeing the cities themselves. We’ve done a lot of exploring over the years and enjoyed a wealth of non-sports experiences when we’re not watching games. That’s why we’ve written the city sports travel guides you see below.

Meant as a companion to our stadium guides , these city guides are meant to help you get the most out of your sports-themed trips to major cities.

Check them out for advice on transportation, hotels, restaurants and other things to do while you wait for kickoff, first pitch, tipoff or puck drop.

Note: Guides are listed in alphabetical order by city.

Atlanta The vibrant “Capital of the New South” is both a cultural and a sports mecca.

Baltimore The home of the first “retro” ballpark, Charm City is also a hotbed of history and culture.

Boston The region’s sports scene is full of tradition and history — and so is the city itself.

Buffalo Head to Western New York and hang out with some of the most fun-loving fans in sports.

Chicago See the Windy City from sky-high and eat deep-dish pizza before the games.

Cincinnati On the banks of the Ohio River lies a city full of history, culture and fervent sports fans.

Cleveland The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s home is as passionate about culture as about sports.

Dallas/Fort Worth They do everything big in Texas, including their stadiums and the events inside them.

Denver The Mile High City is a sportsman’s dream, from spectator sports to outdoor activities.

Detroit sports travel guide

Houston Sports and culture collide in the sprawling “Space City,” the largest metropolis in Texas.

Indianapolis The devotion to hoops and auto racing is apparent, and so is the culture in “Circle City.”

Kansas City Go for the sports, stay for the lip-smacking barbecue and a surprisingly cosmopolitan city.

Las Vegas One of the world’s preeminent tourist destinations is now a legitimate sports mecca.

Los Angeles/Anaheim Don’t let SoCal traffic stop you from seeing all the glitz and glamour L.A. has to offer.

Miami Enjoy the weather, beaches and everything South Florida has to offer besides the games.

Milwaukee Wisconsin’s largest city is well known for beer, brats and cheese — and sports, of course.

Milwaukee Art Museum sports travel guide

Minneapolis/St. Paul The Twin Cities region is full of culture and surprises — as long as it isn’t too cold.

Montreal Get a taste of Quebecois culture and see a variety of sports in this fascinating city.

Nashville Honky tonk, hockey and football — even in Music City, sports plays a big role.

New Orleans Amid all the great food, live music and nightlife, there’s room for sports in the Big Easy.

New York City With so many teams and so many sights to see, the Big Apple truly lives up to its name.

Philadelphia Eat a cheesesteak and learn about the Founding Fathers, but there’s more to see in Philly.

Phoenix The Valley of the Sun has quickly become a hub for some of sports’ biggest events.

Pittsburgh The Steel City offers rabid black-and-gold sports fans, beautiful scenery and good eats.

Portland More than a haven for hipsters, it’s a sports paradise for spectator and participant alike.

Expedia Data Reveals Where Brits Are Heading for Summer, With 28 July the Most Affordable Day to Depart for domestic destinations and 2 June for international destinations

Expedia® today released its Summer Travel Outlook, revealing Brits are opting to follow the football to Germany this Summer, with Dortmund 1 , Stuttgart and Düsseldorf leading the top trending destinations chart. A key sporting occasion in France is also driving Brits to Paris and its suburbs, with the French capital being the most popular destination this summer. Expedia’s data also shows the way to land the best deal this summer is to travel on 28 July 2 for domestic destinations and 2 June for international ones, with Wednesdays and Thursdays offering more affordable flight departures.

From pinpointing optimal flight times to revealing the trendiest destinations, Expedia’s Summer Travel Outlook equips travellers with essential tips for planning the perfect summer trip.

“This summer, British travellers find themselves drawn to a variety of experiences, whether it be immersing themselves in the excitement of sports events in Germany or France, indulging in the warmth of Greek sun, or embarking on unforgettable journeys to long-haul destinations, such us Beijing or Jaipur”, said Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations.

“30 June and 24 July are going to be the busiest air travel days for domestic and international destinations, but if you’re able to plan your holidays in advance, departing on 28 July and 2 June could bag you the best deal. Whether it’s a sport experience supporting their national team or an adventure in the Far East, the best hack to save hundreds of pounds is to bundle flights, hotels and car hire on the Expedia app.”

Read the full Expedia Summer Travel Outlook below, including top destinations and tips for saving on flights.

Expedia Summer Travel Outlook

Brits and a Sporty Summer

The forthcoming football tournament has propelled Germany into the spotlight, leading to highly coveted destinations for British travellers. The excitement surrounding the event has ignited interest, as the trending summer destination list is topped by German cities with a massive surge in searches for accommodations in Dortmund (+765%), Stuttgart (+515%) and Düsseldorf (+330%). Other German cities such as Munich (+305%), Bonn (+300%), Cologne (+250%) and Frankfurt (+215%) also show a high increase year-over-year.

France will also be home to a major sporting occasion this summer, so it’s no surprise that Paris and its surrounding areas are garnering significant attention. This has propelled the City of Lights to be the most popular international destinations for UK travellers, but Expedia’s data also reveals a surge in searches for accommodation in smaller towns and villages just outside the French capital, such as Val d’Oise (+155%), Essonne (+125%) and Yvelines (+35%). Searches for Lyon were also up 50%, with Marseille, Nantes and Bordeaux, the home of major sporting events, all up more than 15%.

Chasing the European Sun

Outside of travelling for sports events, cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, New York and Barcelona, along with beach resorts Mallorca and Ibiza continue to be popular, but Brits are focused on chasing the sun this Summer. According to Expedia’s trending destination data, travellers will be flocking to mainland Greece, which is seeing a +50% increase in searches, whilst Greek islands Santorini and Corfu continue to be popular but their demand remains static.

Interest in Malta is also surging, as it climbs the popularity ranks (+25%), given it is one of the more affordable Mediterranean destinations, offering both culture in the form of its three Unesco World Heritage Sites, and sunny climes. Gozo Island is also having a moment, drawing travellers to Malta to experience its natural beauty.

Searches are also up for Albania (+50%), known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning beaches, and Tunis (+130%), the only short-haul hotspot to make the trending destination list. Both appeal to the budget-conscious traveller, looking to make their money go further.

Experiences in Asia and Beyond

The more adventurous British travellers are looking to experience a trip of a lifetime this summer and discover the wonders offered by Asian long-haul destinations. Data shows that the trendiest spots can be found in China, with searches for Beijing increasing by 320% and by 150% for Shanghai, but also in India, with Jaipur appearing in the list of the fastest-growing destinations, thanks to new direct flights launching to the city this summer. (+165%).

The adventure seekers are also looking to head to Peru, with Cusco, the starting point for the journey to see Machu Pichu, up 145%. The lush greenery of Kandy in Sri Lanka is also calling Brits this summer, with the city up 125% versus last year.

Domestic Destination Insights     Expedia revealed that the top four most popular domestic destinations remained the same as 2023 — London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool. However, Glasgow and Cardiff are surging in popularity, shooting up to number 5 and 6 in the charts and up 15% and 10% year-on-year, respectively.

A Scottish summer seems to be on the cards for many Brits, as Stirling (+40%), Dumfries and Galloway (+20%), Glasgow (+15%) and Ayrshire (+15%) all top the domestic trending destination list.  Brits also continue to explore new destinations at home, a trend that has continued post-pandemic, with Milton Keynes (+60%), Bedfordshire (+20%) and Sudbury (+20%) all trending this summer.

Best Times to Travel This Summer

For this year’s Summer holidays, running from the 1 June – 1 September, Expedia has predicted that the most affordable day to fly will be Wednesday for domestic trips, where you can save up to 20% compared to weekends, and Thursday for international ones, where you can save up to 15%. In 2023, 28 July and 2 June saw the cheapest average ticket price for domestic and international flights respectively, with 30 June and 16 July being the most expensive.

For those travellers who are flexible on the departure date, Expedia revealed that the least busy dates to travel for domestic trips are 10 and 19 July, and 27 and 30 August for international flights.

Summer Travel Hacks

Here are the most valuable travel tools from Expedia identifying the best time to book, saving on flight fares and streamlined planning.

  • Set up flight alerts: Find the right time to book and get notified when flight prices drop with Price Tracking in the Expedia app.
  • Choose a morning flight: According to Expedia’s 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report , flights departing after 3 p.m. are 50% more susceptible to cancellations than their earlier counterparts, proving it pays to be a morning person.
  • Reserve a hotel with flexible policies: Use Expedia’s search filters to look for properties offering “free cancellation” or “reserve now, pay later,” and opt for the refundable room.
  • Bundling: With flights, car hire, hotels and activities, Expedia offers customisable holiday packages in one place, allowing travellers to save hundreds of pounds on average when booking multiple items on Expedia. Travellers then also have their itinerary all in one place, making it easier to keep track of their journey.

Still Time to Book

With summer holidays just around the corner, holiday home expert, Vrbo, recommends that families and groups book holiday homes no later than 8 June* to ensure they have the best choice of properties available.

In popular UK staycation destinations like East Sussex and Somerset, 60%** of holiday homes available on Vrbo are still free to book this summer. In London, Suffolk, Pembrokeshire, North Yorkshire, Kent, Hampshire, or Devon availability is lower at around 55%, so travellers shouldn’t wait too long to book.

For Brits looking to travel abroad, there is still availability for family getaways in the most popular*** destinations of Spain and Portugal, like the Balearic Islands (30%), Málaga region (50%), Alicante (45%) and Faro District (40%). Likewise, there is availability in the popular Dordogne in France (50%).

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Aang using Airbending in the air in Fortnite.

All Air Chakra quests in Fortnite Avatar Elements

Image of Kacee Fay

The fourth part of the Fortnite Avatar Elements event focuses on Airbending to complete the Air Chakra quests . If you want to get all the rewards presented on the exclusive battle pass, you need to take to the skies with Airbending to work through these tasks.

You have to use a lot of special mechanics based on the Avatar Mythics for each set of Chakra quests, which can make actually finishing them a bit tricky. If you’re having trouble with these tasks, here are  all the Air Chakra quests featured in the  Fortnite   Avatar  Elements event and how to complete them .

All Fortnite Air Chakra quests in Avatar Elements event

All Air Chakra quests in Fortnite.

There are six quests you can tackle for the Air Chakra series , although you only have to finish four to unlock the Air Chakra and get one step closer to opening all six Chakras . The Air Chakra tasks follow the Water Chakra quests , the Earth Chakra quests , and the Fire Chakra quests .

  • Land at an Elemental Shrine.
  • Travel distance while gliding.
  • Jump while using the Air Wheel.
  • Deal damage to opponents with ranged weapons while airborne.
  • Air Jump at the Windmill or The Other Windmill.
  • Travel distance outside of named locations.

How to land at an Elemental Shrine in Fortnite

To land at an Elemental Shrine, you need to jump straight out of the Battle Bus with one of these locations in mind and head straight there . It’s crucial you aim carefully and glide to stay in the air if needed because you have to land exactly in an Elemental Shrine to check this one off.

There are eight different Elemental Shrines you can visit for this task. I recommend visiting one of the two Air Elemental Shrines since you need Airbending for other tasks, but keep in mind many other players might be trying to visit them for the Air Chakra quests too.

  • Air Elemental Shrine  north of Grand Glacier.
  • Air Elemental Shrine  north of Brawler’s Battleground.
  • Fire Elemental Shrine  north of Rebel’s Roost.
  • Fire Elemental Shrine  east of Snooty Steppes.
  • Water Elemental Shrine  south of Classy Courts.
  • Water Elemental Shrine  east of Grand Glacier.
  • Earth Elemental Shrine  east of Restored Reels.
  • Earth Elemental Shrine  south of Pleasant Piazza.

All Elemental Shrine locations on the Fortnite map.

How to travel distance while gliding in Fortnite

The easiest way to travel distance while gliding is to deploy your Glider as soon as possible after jumping from the Battle Bus . Then, you want to stay in the air with your Glider until you have traveled a total of 1,000 distance with it.

You can technically find Launch Pads around the map to get back in the air with your Glider later in the match, but these items are decently rare and there’s a much higher chance of someone trying to shoot you down. Because of this, it’s best to tackle this quest at the start of the match.

How to jump while using the Air Wheel in Fortnite

You can jump while using the Air Wheel with Mythic Airbending . With this item equipped and active, you can either press the jump button or specifically activate Air Jump by pressing the button located near the left edge of the screen just above your health bar. Once you jump using this tool five times , this task will be completed.

How to deal damage to opponents with ranged weapons while airborne in Fortnite

There are many different ways you can deal damage to opponents with ranged weapons while airborne in Fortnite . Any method you might think of probably works as long as you’re in the air, but if you’re unsure what exactly needs to be done, here are some options.

  • Launch into the air with Mythic Airbending then swap to a ranged weapon and shoot at an opponent.
  • Jump into the air normally and shoot with a ranged tool while you’re in the air. You don’t get much airtime with the basic jump, so timing is key for this method, but regular jumping does count for this task as long as you’re off the ground when you shoot.
  • Drink a FlowBerry Fizz and use the massive jump boost it temporarily grants to shoot at enemies while in the air.

Regardless of which method you choose, a total of 200 damage has to be dealt against other players with this method.

Two players fighting with one jumping in the air in Fortnite.

How to Air Jump at the Windmill or The Other Windmill in Fortnite

To Air Jump at the Windmill or The Other Windmill, you need to visit one of the two locations with Mythic Airbending and jump into the air while there. You have to be actively using Mythic Airbending for this to work, so make sure you swap from any other weapons you might be using to this Mythic item .

  • The Windmill is located to the south of Fencing Fields.
  • The Other Windmill is located just north of Grim Gate where you can fight the Olympian Boss Cerberus for an Aspect of the Gods .

You just have to jump once for this task, which means you only need to visit one of the two spots.

The Windmill or The Other Windmill in Fortnite.

How to travel distance outside of named locations in Fortnite

You can travel distance outside of named locations by ensuring you’re walking, running, using Mythic Airbending, or otherwise moving around outside of the major locations with names throughout the map. Anywhere around the map that isn’t one of the named regions works for this task, so just pick wherever you want to wander around and keep moving until you’ve traveled 1,000 distance .

There’s a good chance you’ll work on this task naturally as you play a couple of matches, so you might consider just focusing on the other Air Chakra quests or playing normally and letting this task progress in the background.

Working Parents, Plan for the Week with This Simple Exercise

  • Avni Patel Thompson

sports travel locations

To avoid surprises and decision fatigue, take 20 minutes to preview your family’s commitments.

As work travel and hours in the office mount, work parents are feeling the logistical challenges of making every week happen — from kid pickup and dropoff and sports practice to meal planning and doctor’s appointments. The main difficulties lie in managing the firehose of information, coping with decision fatigue, and dealing with surprises like an illness or a forgotten event. The best approach for avoiding — or mitigating — these obstacles is the weekly preview: A planning session between the core adults in the family each week to go over what’s coming. The week’s plan is documented and discussed, highlighting variances from typical weeks and indicating back-up plans for particularly tricky spots.

It’s been nearly four years since we first met Amir and Ria as they were navigating the early months of Covid with two jobs and two young children at home.

  • AT Avni Patel Thompson  is the founder and CEO of  Milo, the world’s first app to tackle the invisible load of running and raising a family. She is a third-time founder building technology solutions that make everyday parenting lighter and more connected. Previously she was the founder of YC-backed Poppy. Prior to taking the entrepreneurial plunge, she spent over a decade building consumer businesses at P&G, adidas, and Starbucks. She has an MBA (HBS ’08) and a BSc Chemistry from the University of British Columbia. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and two daughters.
