Omg this tour was INCREDIBLE. Sumudu our tour guide gave us the perfect combination of tour and free time, whist still allowing us to see sooo much extra on the trip. His calming presence and genuine love for his country was absolutely perfect. I cannot state which day was the highlight as they were all absolutely spectacular. As a first tour I do not know how any other could live up to this. The trip even though it was only 12 days feels like 3 weeks of fun and relaxation, where all the burdens of life just wash away. Thanks Sumudu and One life for an incredible adventure.

It was an ecxellent tour which was way above my expectations. The tour guide, INDIKA, contributed greatlly to my knowledge of Sri Lanka, its culture, its history, and its Buddhist and Hindu heritage. The religious sites of the North and the trecking / hiking in the second half of the tour presented a very good balanse on the whole two weeks experience. It is one of the best tours I have been so far. Thanks INDIKA and Intrepid.

Wajee was an amazing tour guide with so much knowledge! He would always tell us about the places we where going which made them so much more enjoyable and added to the experience. You really get a sense of Sri Lanka from the tour and feel like you have seen a lot of the country! Some great activities included for example the safari park and beautiful hikes. All of the accommodation is lovely. Wajee made the tour so fun with suggestions for any free time and creating a great atmosphere at every activity; couldn’t ask for more from him!

I wholeheartedly recommend this type of holiday! A well-arranged plan and the entire travel route, which included the most interesting places and attractions. Each attraction brought us closer to getting to know this beautiful country of Sri Lanka. All thanks to our great guide named Indrajith! Indra is a very positive and cheerful person who knows his job very well. He is very flexible, adapts to the client 100% and, above all, listens and finds things that we have previously asked for. He has a lot of experience and great connections. He will arrange everything and everywhere, such as the best seats on the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella (Traveling along this iconic route is a great experience!), an excellent jeep driver for Safari or cooking lessons in Ella. It's all thanks to Indra!

Oh, Sri Lanka, you beauty! Rajh, our driver, was a legend - knew every nook and cranny of the place. The hotels were top-notch, and the food? Delicious! Got to see an elephant in the wild, which was like spotting a celebrity. Sri Lanka's beaches, tea plantations, and cheeky monkeys made my trip unforgettable.

I highly recommend using ASY Tours. We used this service for a 14 day trip road trip from Colombo to Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Mirissa. We would never have been able to see so much in such a short space of time without the help of our driver, Tharindu. He has expert knowledge about the culture and history of Sri Lanka and knows all the best local places to eat and shop. He is extremely easy going and a pleasure to be around. We greatly appreciated that he went out of his way to ensure we experienced as much as possible on our travels. Thank you for the incredible experience!!

What people love about Sri Lanka Tours

Fantastic. Great group, lead was awesome and inclusive and knowledgeable. Different things happened every day. Very well organised. Highly recommend.
This is a fab tour, slower paced than some with a mix of fantastic activities and much needed down time. The food and sights are amazing. The highlights have to include the turtle sanctuary and sunrise/set hike. Sumudu is a credit to the company, ensuring he does all he can to satisfy :)
The tour was perfect for my needs. Day in Kandy a bit of a muddle and wash out. Hotel to far out of town and no choice for food but the hotel and whilst ok not great. Prefer to Sri Lankan food. Amba estate amazing. Hotel J in Negombo and Unawatuna little more than a hostel Didn’t like at all. Same group as Jetwing and they are nice hotels. Guide very knowledgable and friendly. Not great value for money would have been better without using hotel j

Sri Lankan nationals can obtain a Nepal visa at the airport. The visit is often brief, lasting up to 60 days. When applying for a Nepal visa on arrival, the applicant is not necessary to be present. Three documents in total are needed to apply for a visa to Nepal upon arrival. Additionally, you can get advice from other travelers.

Sri Lankan nationals can obtain a visa upon arrival in Nepal if:

  • The “On Arrival” visa application process is fairly quick and easy. During the busiest tourist season, you might anticipate some lines. Consider obtaining a visa in advance from a Nepalese diplomatic mission stationed overseas if you want to avoid those lines.
  • Tourist visas are “ON Arrival” visas. They have several Reentry facilities. The only type of entry visa for Nepal is a “Tourist Visa On Arrival.”
  • Fill out the “Arrival Card” before going to the immigration desk to get your passport, payment receipts, and online form processed for visas.

What is tour from sri lanka to Nepal is About?

Forget five-star accommodations, five-course meals, and resorts where you can laze around in comfort. Only those who believe it must be expensive find traveling to be expensive. Everybody in the world has a pinkish tongue. Finding areas that other people don’t visit is the purpose of travel. discovering the local cultures, customs, and population. We’ll lead you to locations worth seeing with the assistance of locals. We’ll give you the chance to meet locals and get a glimpse into everyday life in Nepal. You will consume food cooked over fire with your hands. You’ll travel locally on rickshaws, buses, and three-wheelers. You’ll gain knowledge of regional cultures and religions. Additionally, you’ll assist the locals.

Here are some suggestions for lowering your expenses when exploring Nepal from Sri lanka on a tight budget.

Travel During Off Season:

The most expensive time to travel to Nepal is between October and November, when the weather is ideal for trekking. Visit during the shoulder season, which is from March to April, when the weather is still ideal for hiking and animal viewing and hotel rates are a little bit lower. Traveling to Nepal in the winter offers even greater financial savings and is a great opportunity to explore the Terai and other milder lowland regions. The monsoon season (approximately June to September) is the least expensive period to visit Nepal, but views are obscured by thick clouds, and travel can be difficult because of flooding and landslides.

Eat Like a Local

Restaurants providing meals from around the world are abundant in tourist areas like Pokhara and Kathmandu. Prices, while reasonable by international standards, are often higher than at establishments serving regional cuisine to a local clientele. If you’re on a tight budget, eating out can quickly add up in prices. Instead, go to the neighborhood bhojanalayas, which are modest eateries catering to Nepali customers and offering cheap regional specialties like daal bhaat tarkari (dal, rice and vegetable curry). Samsa (samosas) and momos (meat or veggie dumplings), two delicious and affordable street foods from Nepal, pair perfectly with a cup of sweet chiya (tea).

Slash your phone bill

To prevent being hit with a huge mobile phone bill when you get home, purchase a local SIM card at the airport in Kathmandu or from shops all throughout the nation. You need have your phone unlocked, and to register, you’ll need a passport photo. Use regional call centers rather than your hotel room phone if you need to make landline calls.

Enjoy the SAARC Discount

Visitors from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal pay less for admission than other foreigners do to the majority of museums, national parks, and historical sites. To qualify, you could be asked to present identification.

Don't forget to visit the Maritime Museum and take a leisurely walk along the fort's ramparts.

Why to Buy Sri Lanka Tour Package?

Opting for a Sri Lanka tour package is a strategic choice that effectively addresses the challenges travelers might encounter during their journey. Here's why purchasing a tour package is a smart decision: 1. Expert Navigation of Transportation : Navigating Sri Lanka's transportation complexities can be overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors. A tour package offers a well-organized transportation plan that eliminates the stress of figuring out routes, schedules, and transfers. This ensures that you can seamlessly move between destinations without worrying about transportation challenges. 2. Cultural Immersion with Confidence: Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage demands respect for local customs and traditions. A reputable tour package is designed by experts who understand these nuances, guiding you through cultural sites with sensitivity. This allows you to immerse yourself in the local way of life with confidence. 3. Language Barrier Mitigation: Communication can be a hurdle, particularly in rural areas. A tour package often includes knowledgeable local guides who can bridge the language gap, ensuring smooth interactions and helping you navigate unfamiliar situations effortlessly. 4. Preventive Measures for Health and Safety: Addressing food safety concerns and ensuring access to clean water is paramount. Reputable tour operators prioritize your well-being by recommending trusted eateries and providing bottled water, significantly reducing the risk of health-related challenges. 5. Optimal Time Management: Sri Lanka's diverse attractions and activities can be time-consuming to plan individually. A tour package optimizes your itinerary, ensuring you make the most of your time while minimizing unnecessary waiting or downtime. 6. Exclusive Access to Offbeat Experiences: Certain unique experiences, such as staying in properties listed exclusively to local agents, can be challenging to secure independently. Tour packages often provide access to such offbeat gems, allowing you to enjoy enriching experiences that might otherwise be missed. 7. Guided Insights and Local Expertise:  A well-crafted tour package includes the expertise of local guides who offer in-depth insights into each destination's history, culture, and significance. This enhances your overall understanding and appreciation of the places you visit. 8. Efficient Management of Crowded Sites: Popular tourist sites in Sri Lanka can get crowded, impacting your experience. Tour packages often incorporate strategies to visit these attractions during quieter times, enabling you to enjoy them more fully. 9. Tailored to Personal Preferences: Whether you're seeking cultural encounters, wildlife adventures, or relaxation on pristine beaches, there's a tour package that suits your interests. Customizable itineraries ensure that your travel experience aligns with your preferences. By choosing a Sri Lanka tour package, you're essentially investing in a hassle-free and enriching journey. With transportation, accommodations, cultural nuances, and safety considerations expertly managed, you can focus on immersing yourself in the beauty and diversity that Sri Lanka offers. The result is a memorable and fulfilling adventure that transcends the challenges and ensures a seamless and enjoyable exploration of this captivating island nation.

A basic fare of Rs. 40-50 per km is the general rule of thumb for taxis, while bus rides cost Rs. 25 per km.

It includes miniature models of buildings in the ancient capital located at Polonnaruwa, many of which are now in ruins.

Sri Maha Bodhi is an ancient tree in the Mahamevnāwa Gardens. The statues, water canals, and golden fences surround this ancient tree. This tree is associated with Gautam Buddha as its cutting was brought from Bodh Gaya where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment. This is considered sacred by all Buddhists and has been preserved for many years.

Journey Through the Jewel Nations: A Tale of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka

Our 3 weeks of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka trip was outstanding. Very pleased with Netra’s smooth planning from accommodation to 5-star boutique hotels, nice and friendly guides, experienced drivers, and top-notch services. In Nepal, had a great time learning about Nepal’s recent government history as well as what life is like in the rural mountain areas. A special thanks to our friendly and experienced guide Dipak. Create some best memories in the lovely, peaceful, and nature-filled country of Bhutan with our funny, informative, and thoughtful guide Sonam. A big shout out for being a great cheerleader for our Tiger’s Nest hike. The bountiful produce and friendly people along with our guide and driver Maddu in Sri Lanka were extremely delightful. An amazing island Sri Lanka tour with visits to beautiful temples, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of wildlife was the highlight of our trip. Throughout our tour of these 3 nations, we felt safe with our guide, and while driving with drivers. Especially in Kathmandu where the driving is a little chaotic! Thank you Netra for a memorable and seamless trip!

Amazing Bangladesh-Bhutan-Sri Lanka

Asia Experience offers tours in many Asian countries and our tour organizer Netra has explored each of the destinations. We are very pleased with Netra for perfectly planning our Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka tours considering our duration and budget. All 3 nations were beautiful and unique and the inclusion of UNESCO sites and National Parks in our itinerary made each day more exciting and diverse.

Delighted with the top-notch services of the hotel with a nice breakfast that exceeded our expectations. A cherry on the top is big upgrades at no extra cost along with guides occasionally providing extra meals at no extra cost. Very thoughtful of the hotel to provide a to-go box on early morning departures. Similarly, entrance fees to National Parks, temples, and historic sites were mostly covered. We loved every minute and wished we had another day or two in each country.

A nice surprise with unexpected 24-hour layovers in Bangkok and Kathmandu due to our airlines rescheduling flights for the next day (which happened twice). More pleased with the warm gesture of Netra who adjusted our itinerary at no extra cost to accommodate the change so we wouldn’t miss anything in our itinerary.

In the future, we will book through Asia Experience again when we want to explore more countries in Asia.

The Most Wonderful Private Tour of Nepal/Bhutan

We were very delighted with our private tour of Nepal/Bhutan which was the most wonderful experience we ever witnessed in two amazing countries. We were unfamiliar with Netra and his company before hiring them. Netra provided us with the the utmost level of personal service in the itinerary preparation including making frequent changes due to flight cancellations. In both countries, the team and guide were amazing. They also became friends in the process- the highest compliment we could give. Throughout the trek, Netra communicated with required updates, and all the documents/tickets were delivered well in advance of departure. Our guide Dipak in Nepal made sure of all things and went way beyond the call of duty. In beautiful Bhutan our guide took us to every place on the itinerary. One lunch restaurant in Thimpu ( Cloud 9) was amazing. It was thoughtful of Netra to arrange a spiritual experience in Bhutan which was not on the itinerary. All recommended hotels were fabulous in both countries. We could not do shopping on our first day in Nepal as numerous fine stores were closed. A final day in Kathmandu was remarkable with an equally fabulous guide Rajan and able to do some shopping for exquisite artifacts that now grace our home in Mexico. Rajan went out of his way to personally wrap our goods and take them to the shipper for us. On our last night in Nepal, Netra himself took us out for a fabulous Nepalese dinner as a compliment and for our valuable feedback to improve his service. The trip which was fairly priced was worth every dollar and much more. Overall, everything was top-notch from start to end.

Woman in red dress standing next to a tuk tuk taxi in Sri Lankan street

Pristine rainforest. Ancient rock fortresses. Wildlife aplenty. And some of the most perfect beaches on the planet. There are so many reasons to visit Sri Lanka.

One day you could be hiking the Knuckles Mountain Range, high in Sri Lanka’s hill country; the next, travelling by train through tea plantations and into the mountains. And when you start each morning with curry, hoppers and a cup of the local tea , you   know   it’s going to be a good day. Climb Lion Rock, a dramatic carved-rock fortress in Sigiriya, and explore Jaffna in the island’s north, previously off-limits to travellers. The only struggle you’ll have in   Sri Lanka   is knowing where to start.

Best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka is blessed with a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s throughout most of the year. To soak up some sunshine, be sure to come during the dry seasons (June - August and December – March). The rest of the time it's the monsoon season, so expect rain during this time.

Culture and customs

As an important stop on ancient trade routes, there’s a great mix of cultural influences present in modern-day Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists, followed by Tamils (who are mostly Hindu) and a small amount of Christians and Muslims. Various religious festivals and holy times are celebrated regularly in Sri Lanka, from large nationwide holidays to local village celebrations. As a fairly conservative nation, most locals dress modestly and displays of affection are not considered appropriate in public.

The British influence is still evident in Sri Lanka’s culture, cuisine and buildings. Drinking tea and playing cricket are the most obvious remnants of British colonial rule, although you’ll also find country cottages dotted throughout some rural regions with some serving traditional English fare like roast chicken and beef. Travellers will find that most Sri Lankans, despite having little, are quick to share their food and friendship. Known for being hospitable, generous and kind, when being offered tea or food in someone’s home, it is considered impolite to decline.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chilli, garlic, turmeric and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.

Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster and squid - or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.

These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.

With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.

Geography and environment

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka lies just under the Indian subcontinent, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Much of Sri Lanka receives a high level of rainfall during the monsoon season, with the dry northern areas being the exception. Due to the high level of rainfall, tropical evergreen forest proliferates around the country. Despite extensive land clearing for agriculture, there are still pockets of national parks and biosphere reserves around the country that hold much flora and fauna, including herds of wild elephants, deer and a wide range of birds. Sri Lanka’s remaining forests and protected areas are rich in biological diversity and remain popular with tourists looking for wildlife and adventure.

Sri Lanka’s main cities are typically built up, busy and increasingly becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan. In comparison to Sri Lanka’s fast-paced, city-dwelling residents, many Sri Lankans still live in villages with simple housing and work predominantly in the agriculture and fishing industries.

History and government

Early history.

Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of Sinhalese tribal groups in the 6th century BC. Buddhism arrived on the island sometime during the 3rd century BC and as a result, the city of Anuradhapura became the capital and centre of Buddhism. This Buddhist Kingdom endured years of Tamil raids until Anuradhapura was abandoned in favour of Polonnaruwa in the south. By the 12th century, Tamil rulers had a permanent presence in the north, where Hinduism still flourishes today.

The harbours of the south soon became important trading centres for Arab traders but by the 16th century a new wave of foreign influence began with the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch. Sri Lanka’s wealth of cinnamon and geographic trading advantage appealed to the Portuguese, who slowly took over the island until the Dutch drove them out in the early 17th century. Remnants of this time can still be found in modern-day Sri Lanka, with colonial forts, cannons and other ruins dotted throughout the country, especially along the coast. By 1795, the British arrived and captured the island from the Dutch. Sugar, coffee, tea and rubber plantations were soon established by the British, along with Western schools, churches and colleges.

Recent history

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was officially granted its independence in 1948 but continued to maintain relatively good relations with the British. By 1960, Ceylon had the world’s first female prime minister and in 1972, the name Ceylon was replaced with Sri Lanka, which had just become a republic (but remained a member of the Commonwealth). These changes in government and moves towards independence were largely Sinhalese-centric, which created some tension with parts of the Tamil population.

From 1983 to 2009 Sri Lanka endured an intermittent civil war, which resulted in some displacement of people and human rights violations. More recently, parts of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 tsunami, yet Sri Lanka has rebounded with an increasingly stable economy based on agriculture, tourism and telecommunications. With one of the best-performing stock exchanges in the world, Sri Lanka has emerged from conflict, natural disasters and colonisation to become a rising tourist and economic hotspot.

Top 10 spiritual spots in Sri Lanka

1. bodhi tree.

Located at the ancient site of Anuradhapura, this sacred fig tree is said to have grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree that Buddha was sitting under when he became enlightened. This holy spot has long been a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans and is now becoming a place of spiritual interest for visitors too.

2. Dewatagaha Mosque

One of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, this prayer place for worshippers of Islam has stood in Colombo for hundreds of years. The striking domes and minarets stand out in the Colombo skyline and provide a spiritual epicentre for Sri Lanka’s Muslims.

3. Temple of the Tooth

This Buddhist temple, located in Kandy, is named for the holy relic (said to be Buddha’s tooth) that is housed inside. It's a World Heritage site that has survived bombings and the ravages of time - visit here to see worshippers deep in prayer under the elaborate golden roof.

4. Dambulla Cave Temple

This well-preserved series of cave temples is brimming with paintings and statues that date all the way back to the 1st century. With colourful depictions of Buddha, Sri Lankan kings and various Hindu gods and goddesses, this is one of the most elaborate cave complexes in Asia.

Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims, Adam’s Peak is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by wildlife reserves, the walking trail leading to the mountain is a stunning walk regardless of religious persuasion. Watching a stirring sunrise from the holy summit is nothing short of magnificent.

6. Polonnaruwa Ruins

These impressive ruins of an ancient kingdom are home to massive palaces, huge statues, imposing temples and an artificial lake. Although historically and culturally important, witnessing orange-robed monks praying at Gal Vihara (a Buddhist rock temple) is a spiritual moment you won’t soon forget.

7. Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock)

This magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site was once a mountain monastery many centuries ago. The rock inscriptions, paintings and ancient ‘graffiti’ show insight into the lives of the monks who lived within the caves and grottoes before King Kasyapa took to the throne and established a capital there.

8. Anuradhapura

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are a significant holy place for Sri Lanka Buddhists. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, there are many monasteries surrounding this area of supreme veneration.

9. Munneswaram Temple

This elaborate Hindu temple complex is known for its vibrant festivals in celebration of Navaratri and Sivaratri. During this time, the complex is filled with the buzz of devotees who come to attend daily pujas and bathe in the nearby holy river.

10. Mihintale

If you choose to climb the thousand or so steps to the top of Mihintale’s hill, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as this is the site where Buddhism is said to have originated in Sri Lanka.

Known for its fragrant spices, vibrant fabrics, stunning silver jewellery and one-of-a-kind antiques, it’s difficult to leave Sri Lanka without a backpack full of mementos. From far-flung rural marketplaces to the boutiques and galleries of Galle and Colombo, shopping in Sri Lanka has something for everyone at a relatively low cost.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Sri Lanka

1. Handicrafts

Although available all over the country, Kandy is one of the best places to buy locally-made handicrafts. Choose from handmade brass and silver jewellery, vibrant fabric bags and scarves, and batik wall hangings.

Home to a multitude of plantations and spice gardens, it’s no wonder some of the world’s best spices come from Sri Lanka. Perhaps buy some saffron, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom to take home a taste of Sri Lanka with you.

3. Gem stones

If you’re after a low-cost gemstone, Sri Lanka is a top place to pick up a stone at a great price. Birthstones are popular, as are girls' best friends – diamonds! As always, buy from a licensed gem store to guarantee authenticity.

Festivals and events

Vesak festival.

People all over Sri Lanka commemorate Buddha’s birthday by visiting temples, giving alms and singing devotional songs. Simple, luminous paper lanterns are hung outside homes and food is freely distributed to the public via roadside stalls.

Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka?

Usually, Sri Lanka is a safe country to visit, however, recent developments have seen the capital of Colombo and surrounding regions subject to often violent protests and civil unrest. While travel to Sri Lanka hasn't been banned for international travellers at this stage, it is advised to be alert and on guard when moving through the country and steer clear of any congregating crowds or potential demonstration areas.

Intrepid is working with our team on the ground in Sri Lanka to closely monitor the situation for travellers currently on trips and those looking to depart in the future.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Sri Lanka?

What are the toilets like in Sri Lanka?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in Sri Lanka. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in upmarket restaurants, newer hotels and in some tourist areas.

Is Sri Lanka safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

While travelling through Sri Lanka as an LGBTQIA+ is not necessarily dangerous, same-sex sexual activity is still illegal, and we advise that travellers are discreet in public.

Is Sri Lanka accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travellers with disabilities will likely find it difficult to travel around Sri Lanka. Public transport has not been adapted for those with mobility, visual or auditory limitations, and pavements and roads are often in poor condition. Accommodation, too, is unlikely to be accessible for those in wheelchairs, except perhaps in top-end hotels.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What kind of transport will I use in Sri Lanka?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Hire a bike and pedal around ancient cities full of fascinating ruins for a fun and interactive way to learn about Sri Lanka’s deep history.

Experience some of the world's most beautiful train journeys in the hill country of Sri Lanka.

Tuk Tuks are the best and cheapest way to make your way around Sri Lanka's towns and cities.

Jump in a jeep for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka's national parks.

What to wear in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is warm. Sri Lanka is very warm. Sri Lanka will have you sweating unless you’re up visiting the tea plantations in the hills, so light, breathable clothing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t wear any clothing depicting the Buddha – this can get you arrested, as can having a Buddha tattoo.

Does my trip to Sri Lanka support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Sri Lanka directly support our foundation partner, Zero Plastic.

Zero Plastic aims to reduce plastic waste in Sri Lankan communities through education and volunteer programs. Donations from our trips help them raise awareness for the impact of plastic on the environment and local wildlife and reduce plastic pollution at the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya (and surrounding communities).

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

India bears Sri Lanka ferry costs for one year

sri lanka tour package from nepal

The Government of India has decided to bear the cost towards relevant charges and operating cost at Nagapattinam port to the tune of over LKR 25 million per month for a period of one year for the passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam in India and Kankesanthurai (KKS).

The passenger ferry service, which was launched in October 2023 by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), will tentatively resume on May 13, 2024. It will be operated by a private operator, IndSri Ferry Services, selected by SCI in consultation with the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL).

In order to make the service affordable and attractive for passengers, the Government of India has decided to bear the cost towards applicable taxes and other charges to the tune of over LKR 25 million per month for a period of one year.

Similarly, the GOSL has reduced the deviation tax currently charged from passengers leaving Sri Lanka by passenger vessels and ships.

It should be recalled that the Government of India has also extended a grant assistance of USD 63.65 million to the GOSL for the rehabilitation of the KKS Harbour, which was earlier envisaged to be undertaken under a Line of Credit.

Its already very cheap for someone from South India to fly to Jaffna Airport. What's the reason to make it even cheaper? Is there a hidden agenda between RW and Indian Government? Is the ferry precursor to a bridge that will ultimately allow Indian takeover of Sri Lanka? Have you not learn from the Visa fiasco? That's exactly what they will do if you allow them in. Give them an inch, they will take a mile.

Good move. Something long overdue to connect South India and northern SL. Most insecure Sri Lankans will not like the idea, but economically this is the way to go. I would even support a bridge connecting the two countries.

Tissa Fernando Sunday, 05 May 2024 06:15 PM

Like the high interest credit line that paved the way for dumping substandard goods and capture of strategic assets, they have calculated their longer term benefits to far exceed the amount they spend.

Our so called leaders should be held responsible for harsh decisions they make. Air service from India to Sri Lanka, boat service and also even establishing a roadway. Are we going to be made a colony of India by our politicians.

Nava Lanka Sunday, 05 May 2024 07:47 PM

There are more poor people in both countries, particularly in the northern province of Sri Lanka and state of Tamil Nadu in South India and if both countries can remove travel restrictions and taxes and make travel between KKS

Jayasena Sunday, 05 May 2024 07:49 PM

The cost of the 30 years war loss is in Trillions of US Dollars in terms of damage to infrastructure, loss of valuable human resources to war and migration, slow speed of development resulting in other poorer countries overtaking us, negative consequences from migration, decline in inter ethnic unity, loss of national identity, cost of health care for disabled victims of war, money required for human and infrastructure development diverted to war, interest expenses for war related loans, selling off national assets to obtain funds etc etc. Ferry expenses of LKR 300 million can be deducted against this massive loss to the Sri Lankan people.

Good; we can bi-cycle into India.

India is making Sri Lanka less and less independent day by day by making sure Sri Lanka to go though India for everything. Now they talk of the India Mid East Europe Corridor. Why should we go through India to get to Europe. The same game they play in middle east by ensuring bosses are Indian thereby affecting career prospects of Sri Lankans. When will Sri Lanka stand on its own feet
