Prospective students can now take a virtual tour of Staffordshire University's new £40 million flagship building.
A fly-through video takes visitors around The Catalyst - an 8,800sqm, four-storey study base set to open in August 2021 at the university's Leek Road campus in Shelton .
Construction of the new building, which will include social learning areas, a food court and a flexible event space, has continued throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
So far the building columns between the ground floor and mezzanine have been installed while work continues on the upper floors of the concrete frame. The next phase of the project will see the installation of the building envelope and internal fit out.
Once complete, The Catalyst will act as a study base for 6,500 new apprenticeships by 2030.
Professor Martin Jones, deputy vice-chancellor at Staffordshire University said: "The University is very much looking forward to watching The Catalyst continue to take shape over the next 12 months.

Why go to an open day?
When you attend an open day, you'll get a gut feeling about the university. Open days will help give you clarity if you're not sure what course to choose. You'll be able to visit different departments and chat with lecturers and other department staff, there are often subject talks too. You'll also get to speak to current students. They can tell you whether they're satisfied with the teaching, what the local nightlife is like, what the best halls of residence are – pretty much anything. Don't forget to look at the accommodation for yourself and make time to walk around the surrounding area to see if you like it.
Where is it located?
Staffordshire University has one main campus in Stoke-on-Trent and four other campuses in Stafford, Lichfield, Shrewsbury and London.
The Stoke-on-Trent campus is the largest and is close to the city making it easy to get there by bus, train or car.
Stoke-on-Trent is a lively, compact and affordable city. Keele University is close by so the city is home to a sizeable student population with plenty to do. The area is known for its pottery industry and is the location for the TV series, The Great Pottery Throw Down. The Potteries shopping centre is a popular hub and there's a diverse range of restaurants, bars and clubs to choose from. There's also a great train service to Birmingham which is only an hour away if you fancy a change of scene.

Where We Are
We are based at Here East, within the grounds of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford. The site was previously home to the 2012 Olympic Games.
Here East is now a centre for innovative, digital and creative businesses. Companies include Sports Interactive – which is behind the hit Football Manager game - design specialist D-Ford, high-end cinematography firm Hawk London, Plexal innovation centre and the museum V&A East.
Stratford is one of the most well-connected areas in London, with the Jubilee Line, Central Line, DLR, London Overground and Elizabeth Line services.
What Makes Us Different?
Our London campus is designed in a radically different way to a traditional university. From the moment you step inside, you’ll feel like you are in a real-world business and tech environment, putting your skills into action. Work, study and social spaces are combined to create a buzzing atmosphere and next generation experiences.
Split into different zones spread across two floors, the area is ideal for collaborative work, creative sessions and personalised learning. It’s also a welcoming place where you can feel at home and get the support you need.
The building won the prestigious Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award at the 2020 Education Estates Awards. With industrial-style ceilings and an open plan layout, it’s packed with exciting features.
Production Warehouse
Our Production Warehouse is a hub of innovation and creativity, boasting a wide range of cutting-edge facilities that cater to a variety of study areas.
Step inside our Games Labs, where you'll find top-of-the-line dual-screen monitors and high-quality graphics cards that will bring your gaming and design ideas to life.
This is also where you’ll find our impressive gaming arena, an immersive space capable of hosting top-flight gaming events. With custom-designed lighting, a portable green screen kit for projects and a six-presenter desk, you can also test out your own games here.
Production Warehouse has breakout areas where you can relax on comfy sofas, use the kitchen facilities and store your personal items safely in lockers.
Then as you walk into the main teaching area, the room is divided into cool learning zones. There are glass pods for independent study, which double up as soundproofed spaces for recording podcasts or videos. There are also neon-lit signs and a games lab.
Data Junction
Housing our Computer Science and Cyber Security programmes, this mega-laboratory is truly ‘plugged in’ to the latest digital technology. Even the blue pipes which run round the edge of the space feel like pulsating data connections.
We have our own private, isolated network so you can test out scenarios and complete hands-on challenges. You can even ‘break into’ this network to learn all about ethical hacking - the expert role that helps companies identify vulnerabilities within their infrastructure.
The flexible learning space means it can also be shared by multiple classes at any one time. Students can put on headsets and listen to their individual lecturer. They can also collaborate and take part in live projects, reflecting industry practice.
Reload Café and Students’ Union Zone
Located in the Digital Loft, this is a student-led café. Students who want a part-time job alongside their studies can work at Reload.
The retro gaming café is popular with students who want to chill out and chat with friends. Hot and cold drinks and food are available throughout the day, all at affordable prices. You can play a variety of gaming machines here.
The space is used for events as well, along with informal activities organised through our Students’ Union clubs and societies.
Digital Loft
This is where nature meets technology. Inspired by the look of a New York loft apartment, there are plants dangling from the ceiling and growing up internal walls.
You can even book sessions in one of the funky ‘aviaries’ – metal-framed booths draped in wispy curtains. Inside, they contain seating and are ideal for students to present their projects to small groups.
Other features include the Knowledge Exchange lab where you can share your work on screen. And there’s The Stage, a glass box kitted out with VR and seating for student discussions.
The Digital Loft also hosts a range of services, including an academic hub, meeting rooms and a faith space. There’s a support hub too, where students can get information and advice on any personal, emotional or academic issues. Staff based here include the Wellbeing Officer and the Students’ Union Coordinator.

Virtual Open Day and VR Experience
Staffordshire University is an tech-savvy institution at the heart of the UK, who aim to attract more domestic and international students to their centres of excellence in Stoke, Stafford and London.
In collaboration with their marketing and admissions teams, we created a bespoke microsite which would act as an immersive interactive portal to the campus, courses and facilities.
It uses high-resolution 360 photography, 360 video and drone footage to create tours of each campus, all tied together with a custom-branded design.
One technical innovation is a virtual guide, which prompts visitors to discover more, and to suggest locations they might want to see next. All powered by a text-to-speech engine, which gives the guide the impact and personality of a narrator, with the flexibility to change what it says at any time via the CMS. As well as being updateable via the CMS, the site is fully accessible to WCAG2.1 AA standard.
We also created a VR version of the experience which travels the country on the university’s battle bus visiting student fairs and events.
The game was extremely well-received, and is now being used by other teams at their virtual events this year
“Circus does a great job of presenting high-quality, visually engaging content that tells a convincing story. I don’t hesitate to recommend them.” Staffordshire University
