Popular on Variety

In the press release announcing the event Oliver quipped that he couldn’t make it because “I’m not allowed back in Vegas until I’m cleared of all charges,” while Meyers said, “I WILL be in Vegas but unable to attend as I gotta play my slots.”

Tickets will be available starting Friday, September 15 at 10 a.m. PT at Ticketmaster.com .

“Strike Force Five” was announced as a limited series that will run for at least 12 episodes, and was inspired by a regular gathering on Zoom to discuss the issues the work stoppage created. Per Spotify, what happened instead “was a series of hilarious and compelling conversations. Now, Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel, Meyers and Oliver invite you to listen in on their once-private chats on this all-new podcast.”

Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' is coming to Chicago this summer

Here's what we know so far about tickets.

Anna Rahmanan

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert , usually taped in NYC, is officially going on the road.

Colbert announced that he will move his setup to Chicago's Auditorium Theatre from August 19 to 22, during this summer's Democratic National Convention, which is also taking place in the city.

Although we assume that tickets to the taping will be available to the public, no information regarding potential passes has yet been made.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Late Show (@colbertlateshow)

Colbert revealed the news during last night's show.

“I lived in Chicago for 11 years, and it holds a special place in my heart—and not because of all the Polish sausage lodged in my aorta,” said the host. “Chicago is where I cut my teeth performing at the Second City, and it’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter. Did you know that tears can freeze? I didn’t know that before I lived there! You gotta keep blinking. So, get ready Chicago, because this summer it’s the return of daaaaaaaa Colbert. ”

The funnyman went on drawing laughs from the audience while joking about the location of the upcoming tapings.

“For one week, The Late Show will be broadcasting from the 130 year old Auditorium Theater,” he said. “It is absolutely gorgeous and so creatively named. The Auditorium Theater is right next to the Cafeteria Restaurant, and, of course, the historic Rooms Hotel.”

Lest you think Colbert will be following the nation's political campaigns with his crew all summer long, think again: the host will continue to tape his late-night show from New York's Ed Sullivan Theater during the 2024 Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to take over Milwaukee between July 15 and 18.

As for the program's guests during both conventions, no announcement has yet been made.

How to Get Tickets to See Stephen Colbert Live

Admission is Free, But Reserve Seats in Advance

stephen colbert tour 2023

Stephen Colbert, of "The Colbert Report" fame, debuted on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" in September 2015, following in the footsteps of longtime " Late Show " host David Letterman. If you're going on a trip to New York City  and are a fan, you can get tickets to see the show live.

You can request free tickets  to see "The Late Show." Tickets are generally available three to four weeks in advance. The show releases tickets for one calendar month at a time, so check the website frequently to find newly released tickets, follow the show's social media channels for updates on ticket release dates, or sign up for a free app to receive a push notification once tickets are available. There is a two-ticket limit per request, and you're only allowed to attend a taping once every six months. Guests must be over the age of 16. All attendees need a government-issued photo ID for entry; the person who reserved the tickets must have a government-issued ID with a name matching the reservation to claim the tickets.

This show is virtually always sold out (meaning ticket requests are all booked) well in advance, and it is impossible to get day-of-show tickets. You must plan well ahead if you want to see Colbert live.

The show tapes nightly at the Ed Sullivan Theater at 1697 Broadway, between 53rd and 54th streets. The closest subways are the N/Q/R trains to the 57th/7th Avenue stop and the B/D/E trains to the 7th Avenue stop.

Attending the Show

  • "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert " typically tapes Monday through Wednesday.
  • The show tapes at 5 p.m. and generally lasts until about 7 p.m. The line-up for ticket-holders begins at 3 p.m., and you must arrive no later than 4:00 p.m. or you risk having your spot given to someone on the standby line. All tapings are overbooked, and you are not guaranteed a ticket, so getting in line as early as possible is a must.
  • Large packages, shopping bags, backpacks, and suitcases are not permitted in the studio, so make sure to drop off your belongings at your hotel before you arrive. Small purses are allowed.
  • The dress code for the show is described thusly: "Your mom might see you on TV" casual. Bring along a sweater or jacket if you're attending a taping since they keep the studios pumped full of refrigerated air.
  • You are not allowed to use cell phones, cameras, or other recording devices while in the studio. If you do, you risk having them confiscated or being asked to leave the theater.
  • Food and beverages are not permitted inside the taping.
  • You must stay for the entire show.
  • If a show gets canceled for any reason, ticket holders will be notified via e-mail or phone by the Late Show staff.

What to Do Before or After You Attend the Show

The Ed Sullivan Theater is located on Broadway just north of Times Square , so it's a very convenient location for New York City visitors with lots of other things to do . You could hit the TKTS booth before lining up for the taping and attend a Broadway show after your taping. If you want to get dinner after seeing Stephen Colbert, there are plenty of restaurants in Times Square , as well as great places for  pre-theater dining .

Louis Cato: Tiny Desk Concert

Nikki Birch

There is something special about Louis Cato 's ability to captivate an audience. During this Tiny Desk, he expresses his belief that music is most powerful when experienced in a live setting — it's there that we build community. With rhythmic strumming and a winning smile, he draws us into his honest, thoughtful and vulnerable storytelling.

Not only does Cato sing and excel at multiple instruments, he holds his own on the other side of the microphone, producing, mixing and, most visibly, serving as bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert . If this is your first encounter with Cato, you'll quickly get a sense of his immense musicality. He's the type of musician who inspires other musicians and, as such, is very much in demand. Indeed, at the Tiny Desk, it's a fellowship of good vibes as Cato and his band — bassist Jeremy McDonald, guitarist Randy Runyon and drummer James Williams — guide us through an introspective journey of the love we have for others, ourselves and humanity.

Stephen Colbert Once Laughed So Hard at ‘Tropic Thunder’ His Wife Thought He Was Dying

Watch most comedians long enough and you’ll start to hear the same stories. But watch Stephen Colbert long enough and you’ll always find he has a new reason for audiences to fall in love with his wife, Evie.

On Sunday, April 21 at The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California, “The Late Show” host and Ben Schwartz closed out PaleyFest LA 2024 with a wide-ranging and goofy Q&A that included Colbert retelling some of his career-best stories while gently negging his interviewer’s questioning style .

“And OK, we’re going to the next question, you guys!,” Schwartz said with a laugh.

Always well-paired for these kinds of media events, the improv veterans talked comedy shop and mimed the big move from “Dirty Dancing” among other antics. They capped off their chat with a discussion of the moments that have made Colbert laugh the hardest from throughout his time in Hollywood as the farcical centerpiece on “The Colbert Report” and now eight seasons as CBS’s leading man in late night.

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 21: Stephen Colbert attends

Making full use of the stage (with Schwartz’s back to the audience for ease of presentation) Colbert regaled a packed theater — more than eight times the size of his beloved Ed Sullivan back in New York — about the time ABC paid $15,000 to drop a horse out of a plane for “The Dana Carvey Show.” Diehard fans will know the actor first told that story on “Conan” in 2017 ; you can watch that telling on YouTube right now. But Colbert gave two answers and the other was a story about, you guessed it, Evie.

Describing traveling with his family for the holidays, “The Late Show” host recalled a time he found a film he was watching on a flight so funny that his wife nearly made their kids call for medical attention.

Reacting to one of the final scenes in director Ben Stiller’s legendary satire about the action genre from 2008, Colbert said he made a wheezing sound watching Tugg Speedman (Stiller) get rescued by Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr. in a controversial role he doesn’t regret ). Evie confused that “busy” sound, Colbert said, for some sort of medical attack.

“It’s so dumb ,” Colbert noted not of his wife’s adorable concern, but of the meta moment that made him lose it at 40,000 feet. “It’s where they come in at the end and [Tugg] goes, ‘This is my son. He’s called Twigman…’ because he’s built a little boy out twigs. And [Kirk] is like, ‘Tugg, we got to get you out of here.’ And they’re trying to drop character, but they’re too deep. It’s making fun of actors because they’re too deep in character and they can’t get out of character and they have to get out of character before they can escape this drug den.”

The scene sees Downey removing various costume pieces (a wig, for example) and transitioning through a set of increasingly funny caricatures. Still, it’s the button reveal at the end about the fictional in-universe film “Moon Shot” that caused Colbert to scare his wife with a suffocating sound.

“And I went, ‘Oh, fuck! He played Neil Armstrong as a pirate?!,’” he said with a laugh. “The backstory you saw in that! And then I started choking. I couldn’t breathe.”

Watch the Walkmen’s First Public Performance in 10 Years on Colbert

By Evan Minsker

The Walkmen on The Late Show

The Walkmen will begin their 2023 reunion tour on April 22 at Rhode Island’s Westerly Sound before playing a handful of shows at New York’s Webster Hall. Tonight, they delivered their first performance in 10 years with an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert . The band performed “The Rat” from 2004’s “Bows and Arrows.” Watch it happen below.

The Walkmen offered a statement in advance of the Colbert performance: “Ever since we started the Walkmen, we’ve done everything by the seat of our pants. We don’t ‘plan’ much. So during our Zoom ‘planning’ meeting, we decided the best way to play together for the very first time would be on national television without a single rehearsal.” They clarified that it would be their first performance in 10 years. “I guess there will be a soundcheck but we don’t even know if this equipment works.”

The band’s tour includes dates in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., as well as at Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival.

Stephen Colbert's "The Late Show" going live from Chicago during Democratic National Convention

By John Dodge

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 2:58 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

Stephen Colbert is taking his show on the road for the first time. The destination is Chicago during the Democratic National Convention this summer.

Colbert told the audience of "The Late Show" on Wednesday that the show would be broadcast from Chicago's storied Auditorium Theater from Aug. 19 to 22 on the CBS Television Network.

"This is exciting; summer is around the corner, and so is the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois," Colbert said. "It should be a fun time because historically, all the Democratic conventions in Chicago have gone super smooth."

That punch line included a picture of police with rifles in riot gear during the violent clashes with anti-Vietnam War protesters at the 1968 convention .

Ticket information for Late Show in Chicago

A spokeswoman for the show said ticket information is not yet available, but she expected seats would eventually be available on the show's usual ticketing site.

The theatre is "absolutely gorgeous and so creatively named," Colbert joked.

Colbert lived in Chicago for 11 years, performing and "cutting his comedy teeth" at the legendary Second City and attending Northwestern University.

"It holds a special place in my heart, and not just because of the Polish sausage that is still lodged in my aorta," Colbert said. "Get ready, Chicago, because it's the return of "DAAA COL-BERT."

The show will broadcast from New York's Ed Sullivan Theater during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on July 15-18. Guests for both weeks of shows will be announced at a later date.

You’ll need a combination of persistence, luck and, ideally, flexibility to score tickets. Each month’s openings are posted roughly a month ahead of time (so for June’s tapings, online bookings would be made available sometime around late April or early May; check the show’s Twitter and Facebook feeds for announcements). Certain tickets are issued for “priority” entrance, which gives you a better chance of admittance than “general admission” bookings—but as long as you show up in advance of check-in time with either type of email confirmation, you should be good to go.

If you don’t manage to secure either of the above, another option is to look for VIP tickets . These are tickets you have to bid and pay for, and can cost a pretty penny—but they entitle you to cool bonuses, including a studio tour.

Courtesy, CBS

Five Rules to Keep in Mind

· You have to be 16 or older to attend a taping.

· There’s a two-ticket limit.

· There is no photography in the studio.

· Dress appropriately—you might be shown on-screen. (And leave any large bags at home or in your hotel room. And please, don’t bring your own Big Furry Hat .)

· Tapings take place Mondays through Thursdays. On Thursdays, two shows are taped back to back (they’ll use the second one on Friday).

So you’ve scored a ticket. Now what?

Plan on devoting at least half of your day to the show. While check-in for priority admission typically begins at 3pm—you’ll receive a check-in deadline time on your email-ticket confirmation, and a notification beforehand of what time check-in opens—people sometimes show up as early as noon to stake their place in line. Count on arriving at least an hour before your prescribed time.

You’ll get a number when you get a ticket; that corresponds to your place in line when you come back to enter the theater and then the studio. So you’ve got a better chance of sitting up front (where you might get to slap hands with the host as he enters) if you arrive early.

It’s good to come as a pair. That way one of you can wait in line while the other, say, grabs a cup of coffee or a quick bite and returns.

As mentioned, check-in for priority admission begins at 3pm. You’ll receive a ticket with a time stating when you should return—usually around 4pm. So you’ve got an hour to wander around and have a snack or poke around the area (the southern end of Central Park is just a half-dozen blocks away) if you like.

Once you’re allowed into the theater, you’ll wait in a bit of a holding pen in the lobby, perhaps for 30–45 minutes. It’s a good time—your only time once inside—to go to the bathroom or take some selfies with cutout images of Colbert. Or do some last-minute texting and posting to jealous friends; once you’re in the seating area, those phones should be off.

Courtesy, CBS

Before the main act, a warm-up comedian ( Paul Mecurio ) aims to put you in a laughing mood starting at around 5pm. Also expect music from Jon Batiste and the Stay Human band before the host steps out to do an audience Q&A. Then the real business begins.

The actual taping tends to more or less mirror real time; it may not be an hour, but it should be no more than an hour and a half. Though it may end earlier, count on being there until 7pm (and, if something arises, beyond). In other words, think twice before booking a dinner reservation at 7pm or making an early curtain time at a Broadway show.

All seats are good, whether you’re up close or in the balcony; however, there may be times, particularly on the floor, when cameras get in your way. Of course, you might also be in just the right seat to be selected for a part in a sketch like First Drafts .

The Theater

The neo-gothic Ed Sullivan Theater , at 1697–1699 Broadway, was the former home of the Late Show with David Letterman and, before that, of The Ed Sullivan Show. It was extensively remodeled  for Colbert’s moving in, including the marquee and the C-O-L-B-E-R-T lettering that hangs vertically on the side of the building; note, the host’s office is right by the “C” on top.

CBS had lost the lease a few years after The Ed Sullivan Show ended its run in 1971 but bought back the building after it signed Letterman away from NBC. It was originally built in 1927 by Arthur Hammerstein (yes, part of that entertainment family) and was known then as Hammerstein’s Theater. The interior is landmarked. The long-obscured domed ceiling of the 1927 theater has been restored (with Colbert’s face projected on it, and sometimes it bears an animation of a different lofty being for a recurring sketch ; skip to 3:38 in the video, if you like). There’s stained glass all around, to go along with other elaborate touches.

Halal Guys   A food truck with enormous plates of chicken or beef over rice; it’s all just a vehicle for the addictive white sauce.

Hello Deli   The place made famous by Letterman has fully transitioned to Colbert; honor the house with a Colbert sandwich: chicken cutlet, American cheese, sweet peppers, lettuce, tomato and mayo on hero . The deli also serves as a stand-in for an official merchandise shop; pick up a Late Show cap, T-shirt or mug for a keepsake.

Neapolitan Express   It’s right on the street corner; they make thin, crisp personal pizza pies.

Original Soupman   In keeping with a TV theme, this is the place lampooned in  Seinfeld  episode “The Soup Nazi”; besides soup, it’s known for a very affordable lobster roll.

Five fast facts

· Colbert’s version of The Late Show debuted September 8, 2015, and celebrated its 500th episode on February 21, 2018.

· The studio seating holds 370 people.

· The host’s former show, The Colbert Report , was filmed just a few blocks away at 513 W. 54th St.

· Colbert sometimes makes use, like Letterman before him, of locations in proximity of the studio. Like this one of the many local Duane Reade stores (from 2:30 on in the video).

· According to The Onion’s AV Club, Colbert’s most frequent guest has been astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson . You can find more Tyson in the City at the American Museum of Natural History, where he narrates Dark Universe  and serves as director of the Hayden Planetarium.

Congrats. Now make sure to get back to your hotel room by 11:35pm to watch the show. And know that you’ll need to wait six months before trying to get a ticket for another Late Show taping.

Stephen Colbert felt some trepidation as he transitioned to CBS’s late-night show

Stephen Colbert was interviewed by Ben Schwartz (right) at the annual PaleyFest TV festival in Los Angeles on Sunday.

As host of CBS’s late-night show, Stephen Colbert seems like a natural, someone who’s doing the job he was born to do.

But Colbert didn’t necessarily see it that way as he contemplated the gig a decade ago, when it came open because David Letterman was stepping down.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, when he was interviewed on Sunday by writer-comedian Ben Schwartz at the annual PaleyFest TV festival in Los Angeles, Colbert said that when he discussed the late-night show with his agent back then, he pointed out that “I’m an actor. Like, if I do the show, it’s the first time in my life I wasn’t inhabiting a character all the time.”

“And he goes, ‘Yeah, you can be an actor any time. No one’s ever going to offer you this job again.’ And I went, ‘Oh that’s kind of true.’ Then it seemed like an adventure to me.”

Of course, by that point Colbert had hosted “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central for a decade. But that was within the guise of a persona. That “Stephen Colbert” was a character, a bloviating, performatively patriotic right-wing know-it-all whom Colbert fashioned as a parody of commentators like Bill O’Reilly. (Whom “Colbert” called “Papa Bear.”)

Prior to that, Colbert was the star correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” playing a pompous, exaggerated version of himself. There were several talented correspondents during that era of “The Daily Show,” but the one you most looked forward to was Colbert. His field pieces and his exchanges with Stewart — who played straight man and comic foil — were often hilarious.

Early in his career, he’d performed improv at Second City in Chicago. In the late ‘90s, he co-created and performed in the Comedy Central series (later a film) “Strangers with Candy.’'

Now he gets to be fully himself in the Ed Sullivan Theater in CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” with his surname down the side of the building in vertically arranged, gigantic letters. He delivers scorching political satire at a time when it’s badly needed. It’s all worked out pretty well, for Colbert and his viewers.

Stephen Colbert will travel to Chicago this summer and host The Late Show from the Windy City during the week of the DNC (Democratic National Convention).

The CBS late-night talk show host announced he was hosting a full week of episodes from the Auditorium Theatre from August 19 through August 22.

Colbert said he lived in Chicago for 11 years “and it holds a special place in my heart,” noting it wasn’t “just because of all the Polish sausage that’s still lodged in my aorta.”

“Chicago is where I cut my comedy teeth performing at the Second City. That’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter,” he said. “Did you know that tears can freeze? I didn’t know that before I lived there. You gotta keep blinking.”

The 2024 Democratic National Convention is where the delegates of the United States Democratic Party will select the party’s nominees for president and vice president for this year’s presidential election. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the presumptive nominees and will take the stage at the United Center in Chicago during the week of August 19.

Stephen Colbert to Air ‘The Late Show’ Live From the 2024 DNC in Chicago | Video

The CBS show’s first-ever on-location broadcast happens Aug. 19-22

stephen colbert tour 2023

For the first time ever, Stephen Colbert is taking “The Late Show” on the road. The late night host will broadcast live from the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August. In a statement shared with TheWrap, Colbert said, “I am very excited to broadcast from the beautiful Auditorium. I started my career in Chicago, let’s see if I can end it there.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Late Show (@colbertlateshow)

“Summer’s around the corner,” Colbert told the audience in a clip shared on Instagram , “and so is the Democratic Convention in Chicago, Illinois. It should be a fun time.”

Historically, all the Democratic Conventions in Chicago have gone super smooth,” he joked as an image of police bearing guns faced off against protestors of the Vietnam War in 1968 flashed on screen. “And guess who’s going to be there this year? Me! Because ‘The Late Show’ is doing shows from Chicago for the entire Democratic Convention. For one week!”

“Look at that,” he added. “Sweet home. For one week, ‘The Late Show’ will be broadcasting from the 130 year old Auditorium Theater. It is absolutely gorgeous and so creatively named. The Auditorium Theater is right next to the Cafeteria Restaurant, and, of course, the historic Rooms Hotel.”

“Now here’s the thing. Some of you may know I lived in Chicago for 11 years and it holds a special place in my heart—and not just because of all the Polish sausage that’s still lodged in my aorta. Chicago is where I cut my comedy teeth, performing at The Second City. And it’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter.”

“Did you, did you know that tears can freeze?” Colbert added. “I didn’t know that before I lived there! You gotta keep blinking. So, get ready Chicago, because this summer it’s the return of daaaaaaaa Colbert.”

The DNC is slated for Aug. 19 to Aug. 22 and will take place at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. Colbert spent a decade living in Chicago and honing his comedic skills as an undergrad at Northwestern before he moved to New York.

“The Late Show” will also air live from its usual home at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York during the Republican National Convention (RNC) in July. The show as broadcast live during the political conventions for both parties in 2016 and 2020.

In 2020, Colbert was joined by Trevor Noah as the pair picked apart the events of each convention. In one skit, Colbert reimagined various Democrat leaders as the members of the Avengers, including President Biden as Captain America and President Barack Obama as Iron Man—and Republican Donald Trump was subbed in for Thanos.

In January, DNC host committee Executive Director Christy George told WTTW Chicago that the event will have a major impact on the city, but it’s nothing that it can’t handle. “Chicago is no stranger to hosting large-scale events. This will be our 26th political convention, or 12th DNC,” George said.

“We are working with partners across the city and state to identify and connect diverse vendors with convention opportunities and crate lasting infrastructure that can be used for future events,” she added.
