How Sun Mountain is making a golf bag that's sustainable without sacrificing durability or innovation

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/products/2023/8/10/20230810-sun-mountain-eco-lite-bag-2024.jpg

In its four-decade history, Sun Mountain has made a name for itself by revolutionizing lightweight, easy-haul golf bags. Its innovations have included pioneering the ingenious golf bag “kickstand.” And now, with the launch of the “Eco-Lite” cart bag and stand bag, the Montana-based company is taking on its latest challenge: giving its high-tech model a sustainable, environmentally friendly makeover as the brand aims to hold environmental stewardship as highly as performance. The models, which come in six color-ways, coincide with Sun Mountain’s ongoing commitment to donating one percent of annual profits to organizations benefiting the planet, especially important for golfers whose sport, game, love—whatever you choose to call it—is so tied to nature.

To accomplish their goal, Sun Mountain designers partnered with Repreve, a leading manufacturer of sustainable performance fibers with a specialty in turning plastic water bottles (35 billion and counting) into a durable polyester yarn. That material serves as the fabric basis for the Eco-Lite body.

The Eco-Lite Stand Bag’s design features many of the hacks you’ll likely recognize from other award-winning Sun Mountain styles, like the hydration sleeve, rangefinder pouch, velour-lined valuables pocket, and the infamous “Dual Strap System” for easy on-and-off access to your clubs and apparel when you’re trekking on the course—all weighing around 4 pounds. And it retails for a cool $250.

With a similar look, but cart-ready design, the Eco-Lite Cart Bag ($280) features an additional four pockets, a vented cooler compartment, and two utility handles designed with the architecture of a golf cart in mind. In the upgraded version of the bag for 2024 (currently available only on the Sun Mountain website), the details get finer and finer; take the cart bag’s new nine-inch, 14-way divider top to keep all 14 shafts safe and sound in your bag for all 18 holes and any travel en route. And in the stand bag, a new 8.5-inch four-way top allows for increasing ease and access to clubs to help keep your focus on the game and not

Color options range from sporty navy-and-periwinkle, to classic black and steely gray. A neon lime edition offers a hint more zest and nods to the earth-saving genesis of the bag’s design. Another vibrant color way, called “Black-Ember-Cadet” features a fiery poppy red, perfect if you’re looking to stand out, and even, perhaps, intimidate the members of your fellow foursome. Our personal favorite is the “Java-Coyote-Pecan” shade, a warm, nutty, sophisticated compilation of neutrals and browns, an homage to the colors of the course.

REVIEW: Sun Mountain 2023 Eco-Lite Stand Bag – You Won’t Believe How Light It Is!

mm

In the past, I’ve reviewed the Titleist Players 4 Sta-Dry Golf Bag, and I even walked nine holes with it. It was lightweight, comfortable, and easy to carry for nine holes, even for someone who rarely walks a round of golf.

However, Sun Mountain decided to send me their 2023 iteration of the Eco-Lite Stand Bag , and when it arrived at my door, the box was so light that I had thought they had sent me a picture of the bag on some printer paper and not the bag itself. However, when I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Java-Coyote-Pecan colorway inside.

sun mountain travel lite bag review

I must admit, online images painted a different picture. It seemed smaller in the images Sun Mountain provided , but it seemed to be just as spacious as any bag I have that is a stand bag. I loved the colors, they are unique and classy, and reminded me of one of my favorite things to drink on a chilly morning when I play 18 with my friends: a cup of warm coffee.

Sun Mountain describes the bag on its site:

“Eco-lite bags have many of the great features offered in Sun Mountain’s top-selling bags and are made with Repreve fabric, which is made using recycled plastic bottles. Approximately twenty-five 20-oz bottles go into the material used in each bag.”

One of my main draws to this bag, in particular, is the recycled materials. My main job requires me to write about electric vehicles and sustainable energy; at one time, I was very passionate about it. While I still believe in recycling and being sustainable where we can, I am not as hellbent on it as I once was.

sun mountain travel lite bag review

With that being said, I really enjoy these types of everyday things that take recycled materials and take advantage of them. A nice golf bag that utilizes sustainable materials to decrease waste is a win-win in my book, and that was one of my favorite things about this bag, without a doubt. Shoutout to Repreve fabric for their great work here.

However, there are a lot of great things about this bag that are applicable to the golf course:

  • Five pockets of storage
  • Incredibly lightweight at just 4.2 pounds
  • Four dividers
  • The *most* comfortable straps I’ve ever felt on a golf bag

There is so much storage on this bag that it is insane. I haven’t yet found a use for the side pocket, but usually, that’s where my rain gear ends up. As you can see, when I took this bad boy out to the range for some pictures, it was a beautiful day, so I didn’t pack it.

However, the ball pocket is huge, and you can fit more than a dozen in here with additional space for your rangefinder, gloves, or whatever else you want to put in here. I also thought fitting two standard water bottles in that particular pocket was a nice touch. Usually, it’s perfect for one on other bags.

sun mountain travel lite bag review

There’s so much room for things here that it is no wonder this bag weighs nothing on its own. Fill it up with a lot of necessary things, and it will probably get heavy, simply because there is so much room for accessories and necessities you’ll need for the round.

Four Dividers and Plenty of Room

sun mountain travel lite bag review

I play the T100s from Titleist, a blade that is minimal. I asked my friend with Callaway CBs to put his irons in here to see if there was any difficulty with space. Needless to say, there was not.

We fit his mallet Odyssey Putter in there as well, as I also play a Scotty Cameron Newport, a blade. I tried to be as invasive as possible with clubs in here, and it was no issue. Everything went in and came out with ease. In the past, I’ve had bags that are extremely tight when certain grip thicknesses are concerned or even club head sizes, even with four dividers.

This managed to handle all of his clubs, the oversized putter head, and wedges, with no issue. I was very impressed.

These Straps…Goodness Gracious

These straps are like a fresh bookbag on the first day of middle school: they’re thick, comfortable, and provide more support than any bag I’ve had in the past.

When I reviewed the Titleist Sta-Dry 4, my biggest complaint was the straps, and I wasn’t sure if much could be done.

Sun Mountain proved me wrong.

sun mountain travel lite bag review

Because I couldn’t get a great image of them myself, I decided to use Sun Mountain’s. I promise you, you won’t have any discomfort with these.

The Bottom Line

This is a quality bag. I am excited to see if the material holds up and how the colors respond to the elements. But all in all, for $249 , this is a great pickup. Well done, Sun Mountain.

REVIEW: Sun Mountain Golf Eco-Lite stand bag

sun mountain travel lite bag review

Plastics makes perfect -- in this case anyway. If you’re someone who steadfastly uses recycled bags at the supermarket, is obsessive about sorting your home trash, hugs trees after hitting them with errant shots and/or genuinely cares about the wellbeing of the earth, then the Sun Mountain Eco-Lite golf bag will make you grin.

You’ll gladly bear it, considering it weighs less than 4 pounds. It’s like playing naked, with clothes on.

NEW FEATURES: The fabric used on the Eco-Lite golf bag is made from recycled plastic bottles. I thought that would be weird and that it would feel cheap. Not at all. If anything, it feels stronger.

DEFINING FEATURES: It has six external pockets, including a velour-lined pouch for valuables, a hydration sleeve and a full-length pocket for apparel (and extra golf balls). The 9-inch top has a wide-open, solid, four-part divider and a comfort-grip handle. The strap system is Sun Mountain’s patented E-Z Lite Dual Strap and yet, impressively, all of that equals less than four pounds (before I add too many extra golf balls).

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES: The material is amazingly durable. The legs extend logically and don’t wobble. The straps are easy to adjust. The color schemes are fire. (Slang for “hot.”) The weight is, again, impressively minimal. This bag is everything I look for in an ideal carry bag. It’s not waterproof, but neither am I, so, if you don’t want to get wet, don’t play in the rain.

COMPARABILITY: There is literally nothing else on the market like it. If you like unique products, that alone should be a strong selling point. The bag comes in four different bold color schemes: Black-White-Gunmetal-Red, Cadet-Inferno-Gunmetal, Navy-Red-Cobalt and (my personal favorite) the “Irish” Rush-Green.

COST AND VALUE: With a retail price of only $220, it comes in well below many similarly built products by other companies. If you tell yourself they used 25 Fiji water bottles to build your specific bag, you can almost feel like you got $100 for free ($150 if you buy your bottled water at the airport). At that rate it’s a steal. At that rate, I’d buy two of them. And maybe even carry both at the same time if that means I can play with 28 clubs.

Unless you exclusively fly Southwest Airlines, you’re well aware of “the 50 pound rule," a flying golfer’s archenemy. Not with this bag.

“You can take four more boxes of balls along,” my son said, implying I might somehow lose the four dozen I’d already jammed in my travel bag.

He’s right. This bag is so light, and yet so well built it’s almost unbelievable. I’ll no longer be the guy the caddies dread, and my son might even let me play with him and his friends. Why would the weight of the bag matter to him and his friends? It’s not the weight.

“That bag is sick, Dad,” he says. “Totally sick.”

Sick in a good way, apparently. I get a lot of products to test that I’ll never use. I shan’t say that about this bag. This sucker is loaded and ready to go. Now, if only having the coolest bag on the course made me the best golfer on the course, too. Definitely not the case. My game is still sick. Just in a bad way.

Sun Mountian ClubGlider Meridian Overview

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian is an impressive golf travel bag with easy motion, excellent protection, and plenty of features to keep golf geeks happy. The name of the game here is peace of mind, and Sun Mountain does a good job of providing it. Look at our experience traveling with the Sun Mountain ClubGlider to see if this is a bag for you.

ClubGlider Meridian Features and Benefits

To help you get a better idea of The ClubGlider Meridian got a total of 4.6/5.0 in our golf travel bag testing. This star rating was one of the top three of all the golf bags we tested. To be honest, I expected this with the Sun Mountain name on the golf bag.

The features of the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian travel cover include large internal dimensions (52” x 14” x 14”), a retracting leg mechanism, exterior access pockets, dense foam padding, and pivoting wheels.

The entire design of this bag is built around the idea of being the best travel bag for maneuverability, and that is exactly what we found. In addition, the number of colors that you can find in the Meridian line is kind of a nice bonus. I know when all the bags start coming out, I like having a bright color that stands out.

Maneuverability

The maneuverability is where the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian stands out. With the ability to use the retractable wheels when loading or pulling, you can move at whatever pace. The wheels are also built on a swivel, so turning and getting around tight spaces is not a problem.

You won’t find a better travel bag from Ogio, Bag Boy, Callaway, and other top brands that has better maneuverability than this.

The protection is good, not the best on the market. After all, this is a soft sided travel cover. However, the wear areas are very well reinforced, and the top part of the bag has extra protection for woods and drivers that may need it the most.

I know anything can happen when you hand your clubs over to baggage, but I wasn’t concerned with this Meridian holding on to my gear, and when arriving at my destination, everything was intact.

Internal straps also help to secure things exceptionally well.

The overall storage and size of the Meridian is good, but the outdoor storage doesn’t help the bag stand out. Sun Mountain may have been trying to keep the weight down, but the exterior pockets are not all that great.

However, inside the bag, I had no trouble storing extra golf balls, my shoes, tees, the two putters I have as backup (if you know you know), and all the rest of my golf gear. Essentially, there is plenty of storage.

The bag is designed to hold a single cart or carry bag; staff bags will not fit. I like this bag best with a stand or carry bag; it just sets up really easily to hold all of the extra gear around the bag and fits in with ease.

Sun Mountain beside bag

The ballistic grade nylon does not rip or tear easily and will hold up well over time, even if you travel quite a bit. My bag was also left out in the rain for a little bit, and the material dried well and didn’t show marks.

The only negative to the SunMountain ClubGlider Meridian packing system is that it is just a single zipper. However, the rest of the packing process should be one of the best on the market. I don’t know about you but kneeling on a hotel carpet to sort through my golf gear is not a favorite pastime.

With the retractable leg system in the Meridian, I can stand and work on packing and unpacking my gear without having to think about the last time that hotel floor was cleaned! Keeping everything up higher like this also seems to make packing neater.

Getting the golf shoes to fit in was really not a big deal.

The total weight of the bag is 11.3 pounds. Overall, this is pretty light and helped with the maneuverability we saw from this product. If you can keep your golf bag weight down just a bit, this model is not even that difficult to lift into the car, but for the most part, you will be using the impressive wheels.

Sun Mountain bag inside

Construction

This is a soft sided golf travel bag made with heavy duty ballistic nylon. For those set on hard covers, the Meridian may not do it for you. It’s not as rigid. However, considering this is a soft-sided cover, I was impressed with its overall protection.

In addition, the driver fits in easily, and I didn’t feel like it had excess pressure on it when the golf bag was zipped closed. I had no issues getting a full-length driver into the bag with how the material moves and stretches.

The bottom part of the bag does have some plastic to help support the area where the retracting wheels will be stored. This is heavy-duty plastic and does not feel flimsy in any way.

Size/Compact

The overall size of the ClubGlider Meridian is about average. You can get it smaller when compacted but remember that the retractable leg mechanism still takes up some space. This means that it won’t get quite as small as some other soft-sided covers.

However, when extended, this travel cover becomes an excellent option for both men’s and women’s golf clubs because of the average size and the easy ability to maneuver the clubs around the airport. Save some space in your closet for this model but don’t be incredibly concerned with overall size.

Additional Sun Mountain Golf Travel Cover Options

The ClubGlider Meridian tends to be the most popular of the golf travel bag options from SunMountain, but there are a few other models to choose from as well.

ClubGlider Journey

The Journey is the most affordable of all the Sun Mountain travel solutions for golfers. It still has plenty of foam padding and easy loading but slightly smaller internal dimensions than other options on the market. The pivoting wheels make this travel cover much easier when it comes to maneuverability through the airport.

ClubGlider Tour Series

The Tour Series can hold a single cart bag or stand bag; the leg mechanism is very easy to use with the Tour Series and will hold up quite well over time. The biggest difference you will see here is the extra external pockets for storing that last-minute gear.

ClubGlider Pro

The ClubGlider Pro is for a professional traveler. If you are looking for something a bit more heavy-duty to take care of your golf equipment, this could be it. In addition, the ClubGlider Pro can manage a staff bag or two smaller bags. The leg mechanism is durable and will hold up this heavy golf equipment. Even though this travel case is large, the maneuverability is still quite good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions about the ClubGlider Meridian and what it brings to the market.

Does the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian have a warranty?

Sun Mountain has a one-year warranty on any defects in materials and workmanship for one year after the date of purchase. This will likely not be the case as the quality control at Sun Mountain is quite good.

Can you return the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian travel bag?

The return policy on the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian is not excellent. You have to return it within 7 days of purchasing. You can get store credit or a return to your original credit card, depending on where you purchase the golf bag.

Is the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian made out of plastic or metal?

Most of the ClubGlider Meridian is made with a Nylon material. However, some hard plastic is also incorporated into the retractable wheels and the bottom part of the bag that holds the wheels in place. The nylon and plastic make up help to make the bag more lightweight without losing stability.

Why is the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian called a “glider”?

The glider name for the SunMountain Meridian comes from the ease of maneuverability you will see with this golf travel bag. The bag pulls through the airport easily, spins around, and can turn corners without you having to fight with it. The bag truly glides, even when holding quite a few pounds worth of clubs and gear.

What is the weight limit for the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian?

Sun Mountain does not advertise a top weight capacity for the ClubGlider Meridian, but your airline certainly will! Since this bag weighs just 11 pounds, we had no problem keeping the total weight under 50 pounds and making it easy to keep the bag within the proper weight requirements to avoid overage charges.

Who Is The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian For?

One of the things that I find interesting is when golfers purchase Titleist, Mizuno, or Miura golf clubs and then get a $30 travel cover from Amazon and throw all of this gear inside and hope for the best. This just doesn’t make sense to me. If you care about your golf equipment and travel fairly often, this is a great golf travel bag.

Sun Mountain products have good quality that holds up over time and encourage more travel. I trusted putting everything from my rain gear to rangefinders, golf shoes, and brand new driver in this travel bag, and it worked out well on several trips.

Final Thoughts: Is The Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Worth It?

If you are shopping for a new golf travel bag in 2022, put the Sun Mountain ClubGlider on your list. For a soft sided cover, we were impressed with the protection; in addition, the maneuverability beats all other options on the market. I liked the ability to choose colors that would stand out and make it easier to find my clubs when they all get dumped out at the same time. Overall, Sun Mountain continues to create products with excellent durability and longevity, and even though they aren’t the cheapest, this one is worth the money.

The Eco-Lite offers five pockets in all, as well as an oversized apparel pocket and range finder pouch with pass-through to cart strap. Carry straps are contoured for comfort, and feature a carry assist grab loop; its colors include Cadet-Inferno-Gunmetal which I tested. I would highly recommend it as a lightweight yet eco-friendly golf bag since its fabric uses recycled plastic bottles as its material; its weight is about four pounds while the 9" top will accommodate most clubs comfortably.

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover Review

This unique and compact design saves space when stored away, but how did it fare when we took it on our travels?

Sun Mountain Kube Travel Cover review

A superb travel cover that benefits from a unique system that offers hard-shell protection while folding away into a pint-sized cube shape when not in use. Those who like to travel close to the weight limit will really appreciate the lightweight nature of the design.

Dan Parker

Modern travel covers now come in all different shapes and sizes, all with the goal of safely transporting your golf clubs on their journey through baggage handling for your golf trip. Much innovation has been seen in this area of the market and the new Sun Mountain Kube travel cover is evidence of that. It is a uniquely designed cover that offers hard shell casing around key areas of the cover, all while folding up to a pint-sized cube shape for easy storage at home and on holiday. I took it on four flights across Europe to test out this system for myself. Most importantly, could it do the basics right and keep my golf clubs protected on my travels?

Folded up, the Kube has dimensions of just 23cm x 33cm x 38cm - barely making a mark wherever you have the space to store your travel bags. I found it especially useful in a hotel room, where standard travel covers can often take up much of the floor space while you're trying to enjoy your trip. The only other travel bag to offer such a fantastic way of storage is the Motocaddy Flightsafe travel cover which is slightly larger and heavier in its execution.

The Sun Mountain travel cover folded away on a hotel room floor

Neatly packed away on the hotel room floor, the storage solution really comes into its own when you're away on trips.

The handy byproduct of this unique system is the extra padding it provides when the bag is in use. The hard-case shell expands to the top and bottom end of the bag, giving robust protection, especially to the top end of the bag where protection is needed the most. There are also two internal and two external compression straps that tightly hold down your bag to stop it from moving around whilst on its travels. On the four flights I've used the Kube on so far, my clubs have come back perfectly intact with everything placed in the bag remaining exactly where I put it before departure.

I think my favorite thing about the Kube aside from the way it folds away is how lightweight it is. Coming in at just 3.08kg (6.8lbs) it leaves you with so much weight to add to the bag. Compared to the Ram Fx travel cover , which weighs in at 4.08kg (9lbs), you'll be able to take more away with you in the Kube. Most airlines will allow a golf bag to be no more than 20kg - it can be up to 23kg on some airlines - and you certainly want to make the most of that booked baggage. The lightweight nature of the Kube allows for this and I was able to pack - alongside a full set of golf clubs - three pairs of golf shoes, my golf clothes for the trip, and a toiletries bag. All told this was exactly 20kg on one flight I took earlier this year, leaving me an extra 3kg on the more generous airline. It negates the need to book an extra checked bag for trips and it'll save you money booking more baggage in the long run. It's worth noting I'm not a light traveler either...

The two internal pockets on the Sun Mountain Kube travel cover

The two internal pockets on the Kube lacked much depth. You could conceivably squeeze a pair of shoes in each, but it would be a squeeze. I opted for belts and dirty washing!

The only thing the Kube was lacking for me was some extra pockets. There are two small internal pockets that I used to carry belts and dirty washing, but in truth, they're not very large. This leaves things like golf shoes, caps, toiletries, or whatever else you pack next to your clubs, freely floating around inside. Some travel covers like the Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian , Ram FX and Macgregor VIP II travel cover also feature outer pockets for more organized storage, something the Kube lacks. Whether you want to store things in external pockets on a travel cover is another topic entirely.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience of traveling with the Kube. Its unique storage functionality is incredibly useful but, most importantly, it does the basics right by keeping golf clubs well protected. Those who like to travel as close to the weight limit as possible will deeply appreciate the extra weight you can pack into it thanks to the lightweight design and I fully expect to be racking up plenty more air miles with the Kube in tow.
