Hiking : Tour des Dents du Midi

The most western part of the Valais Region.

switzerland virtual tour

The ‘Tour des Dents-du-Midi’ is a pioneering hike of the Valais inaugurated in 1972, and owes its reputation to the marathon that has been run here for almost 40 years. You may organise the stages of your walk as you wish, using the various huts along the route for accommodation, to eat meals in or simply to buy refreshments. Champéry and the Portes du Soleil also offers exceptional mountain biking opportunities with 24 lifts are open during the summer season.

The village of Champéry houses one of the last ten bell foundries in Switzerland. In a small and dark workshop in the center of the village, father and son perpetuate alpine traditions when farmers gave their cows a bell in order to identify them in the fog or darkness. The bells are also symbolic, being marked with a divine cross in so as to bless pastures and protect animals from evil spells.

The bronze bells are now a symbol of the region and an authentic souvenir that delights tourists and collectors alike. Passionate about casting bells, Mr. Perrin keeps the craft alive, using traditional tools and methods and manufactures about 200 bells a year. Each bell sounding out the unique sound that characterizes it.

Nendaz...the alphorn festival capital.

switzerland virtual tour

Each summer, the enchanting Nendaz provides the stage for the Valais Drink Pure Alphorn Festival and welcomes more than 100 participants of different nationalities. Alphorn initiation courses and visits to alphorn makers are organized regularly. On the spacious meadow high above Nendaz, 150 men and women stand in a circle, each holding an alphorn: the tension is palpable. A bell rings, and the air is filled with sounds from another century. This extraordinary performance is the highlight of the Valais Drink Pure Alphorn Festival that takes place over three days each summer in this village high above the Rhone valley, framed by some of the Alps’ highest peaks.

Throughout the year, too, this hauntingly beautiful instrument features prominently in the life of Nendaz, offering a chance to try it yourself . Take a single lesson or a week-long course, from beginner level upwards. You’ll discover that the sound you make depends on the alphorn’s material, thickness and shape, and of course the way you work your lips: the greater the tension, the higher the tone.

Impressive reservoirs of energy

switzerland virtual tour

Thanks to its topography Valais has the ideal conditions for using water power. At the beginning of the seventies almost 90% of the country’s energy production was already provided by hydro electric power. Following Switzerland’s decision to withdraw from atomic energy the great reservoir works once again became highly significant.

Grande Dixence (pictured right) is the most famous reservoir in Valais. It is the tallest gravity dam in the world and lies at the head of the Dix Valley. In every respect it is a record holder. The height of the dam wall, 285m, has never been exceeded; it weighs 15 million tonnes and is higher than the Cheops Pyramid. At its base the dam wall is 200m wide and at its crown it tapers off to 15m.

Grande Dixence can be visited from mid-June to mid-September. There are four guided tours per day through the interior of the wall. A wealth of fascinating and scientific information is available from the information pavilion and at the top of the dam wall which can be reached on foot or by cable car.

The Valaisan hydro-electric energy park also includes such large reservoirs as Mauvoisin (in panorama), Mattmark, Emosson and Gougra. However the small reservoirs are also of great economic significance to individual districts. Many of the lakes can be hiked around and offer an impressive counterpart to the natural mountain lakes in the Valaisan Alps.

Mountain Lakes

Idyllic and refreshing

switzerland virtual tour

A hike to an idyllic mountain lake must be one of the most wonderful experiences that you can enjoy in the Alps. Hikers can take an invigorating swim in the cold water or at least cool their tired feet.

The lake near Derborence is one of the loveliest to visit. In 1714 and again in 1749 there were two huge landslides from Les Diablerets. The 100m high mass of debris created a lake that for a long time was considered as a curse so nature was left to spread out unhindered. Today the wild Derborence Valley is protected.

There are around a dozen mountain lakes in the Binn Valley landscape park. Halse Lake, set in a moorland landscape of national significance, is particularly beautiful and easy to reach. The blue lake at Riederalp provides plenty of enjoyment for families. It is situated at 2207m altitude and the water can reach 20 degrees in summer. There is free access to the lake and the possibility to have a barbecue. This lake also has breathtaking views of nearby 4000m peaks such as the Weisshorn, Matterhorn and Dom.

Taney lake is in a picture book setting cradled between the twin peaks of the “Jumelles”, Grammont and the Taney Pass. It is a small paradise at 1,500m high above the Rhone Valley and has been a nature reserve since the sixties.

Stelli Lake near Zermatt is another idyllic spot which is only a 20-minute walk from Blauherd station. The most prominent side of the Matterhorn is reflected in the waters of the lake making it one of the favourite photo subjects in the region.

No matter which mountain lake you choose for an excursion, it is well worth taking the time to observe and enjoy unspoilt nature in all its beauty. In Valais – the water tower of Europe!

Grindelwald, Switzerland Virtual Walking Tour

Hotels and street in Grindelwald Switzerland

Take in the views and sites of Grindelwald, Switzerland that make it one of the best places to stay in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland. The views are kind of mind bending.

The virtual Walking Tour:

Hiking Switzerland Grindelwald – Virtual Walk Walking Treadmill Video

Today we take a virtual walking tour along the streets of famous Grindelwald, Switzerland. The small city lies just over the mountain from Lauterbrunnen and up the valley from Interlaken in the Jungfrau region of the Bernese Oberland. Grindelwald, Switzerland has become a major tourist destination in the Swiss alps and is one of the best places to travel in my opinion. Switzerland hiking is some of the best and most easily accessible but you can easily find other things to do in Grindelwald. And if you don’t want to take on steep mountain trails, Grindelwald has some very nice paved walking paths down to the river and back.

If you plan to travel here, it’s all very easy and straightforward. Also, our kids loved the playground and you can take the bergbahn to First or up to Pfingstegg . You can rent bikes and scooters and go paragliding as well.

Grindelwald Valley with Mountains

The area has numerous hiking trails. You will see lots of tourist shops and restaurants and lots of hotels and vacation rentals in Grindelwald. We walk from the train station down around the hill and then up a ways, past the gondola station that leads up to First and back to the train station. The views of the mountains are stunning.

Grindelwald, Switzerland dates back to at least the 12th century. While the current population is a mere 3800 or so, it can feel crowded.

Grindelwald gets very busy in the summer with tourist traffic. Because of its picturesque views and easy access, it attracts people from all over the world. It has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We could have spent a week there easily. I’d love to have rented the carts or bikes and ridden down from First or to have explored the canyon below Pfingsstegg. I hope you enjoy this tour and exploration of Grindelwald. Thanks for joining us and keep on steppin’. -Henry

World  /  Europe  /  Switzerland  / St.Moritz, Swiss Alps, Virtual Tour

switzerland virtual tour

St.Moritz, Swiss Alps, Virtual Tour

St. Moritz is one of the most respectable ski resorts in the Swiss Alps. In the brochures of tourist operators, St. Moritz is described as a place of "leisure for the demanding clients". This resort has managed to astonish me more than once. However, it is not because of the restaurants located among the ski tracks, where visitors are served black caviar in ski boots and truffles, it is not because of the orchestra with live musicians, and it is lastly not because of the "light, healing, and sparkling champagne air".

I was first surprised by a story told by my friends, who had come back from St. Moritz. According to them and as well as statistics, this blissful place has 360 sunny days a year, which is extremely important for skiers. So, my friends stayed at St. Moritz for a week and were "lucky" to get those five cloudy days. On the other hand, the sixth day, as expected, was sunny. :)

The next time I was surprised was when I was visiting St. Moritz myself. I stopped at a small local store to see if I could find a sweater for myself. I picked a nice one off the shelf, automatically checked the price tag and was completely shocked. It immediately reminded me of an old joke about a visitor carefully studying a menu in a restaurant and then asking the waiter; "Are these prices or phone numbers?" :)

The sweater that had caught my eye had a price tag of 6,000 Euros (about 8,000 US dollars). Apparently, my face expressed such surprise that the elderly and very polite owner of the store told me that the sweaters on the other shelf were cheaper. I approached that shelf and checked the price: indeed, they were cheaper — only 4,000 Euros.

So I decided to forego purchasing clothing for now, and I instead called the AirGrisha Company and hired a helicopter for three hours — all for the price of one sweater. During that flight I created 40 panoramas, 9 of which are shown on this website.

Now, here is some information about St. Moritz.

Swiss St. Moritz is rightfully considered the "King" of the Alpine ski resorts. "Aristocratic", "cosmopolitan", and "respectable" all describe St. Moritz, a favorite place of leisure for the representatives of royal dynasties, multi-millionaires, politicians, and show business stars.

St. Moritz is located 1,856 meters above sea level on the shores of the lake bearing the same name, in the Engadin region in Graubünden Canton. Today the settlement itself counts 5,600 residents; at the peak of the season you can add about 3,000 service personnel, as well as thousands of tourists. This place has perfect conditions for downhill ski training: the 36 "black" tracks and 136 "red" tracks provide many possibilities for snowboarders, beginner cross country skiers, and skaters. The total length of the regional downhill ski tracks is 350 km, and the length of the cross country tracks is 150 km.

St. Moritz is considered to be the "brightest" resort of Switzerland; there are 322 sunny days a year. This explains why there is no shortage of tourists, even after the ski season is over (in the summer, late spring, and the early fall). During the warm seasons, tourists enjoy water cruisers, nice walks, bike rides, thermal water, stunning landscapes, and the elite ambience of the resort.

You can ride the air tram directly from St. Moritz to Corviglia station at a height of 2,486 meters, while taking in the dizzying view of Piz Noir (3,057 meters above the sea level). Experienced skiers value this steep track for its ultimate challenge.

Several luxurious ski resorts adjoin Corviglia station, including Piz Corvatsch (3,451 meter above the sea level). This is one of the most stunning places to ski. The track runs along the glacier.

Piz Bernina is raised 4,048 meters above sea level, which makes it the highest point of the Eastern Alps. The "Mark and Rosa" cabin, which is a key rest point for climbers, is located here at a height of 3,600 meters. Usually, climbers go down to the cabin at the end of their route. Despite its shabby exterior, the cabins are equipped for a very civilized break. The service personnel are constantly on duty, and everybody is always welcome to stay. If all comfortable places are taken, you will still be able to stay in an unheated shed on a very basic bed.

Bregaglia Valley, a wonderful Alpine valley, is located southwest of Graubünden Canton. Nowadays, its lower region belongs to Italy; while in the upper Swiss region, you can find the artificial Lake Albigna, created in 1959 to supply hydroelectric power plants. Passing by, one can see the wall of the dam unexpectedly appearing among the snow-covered mountains, and then the same idyllic landscapes of Switzerland with their dollhouses, and, lastly, the majestic mountain massifs.

In our panoramas you will also see two alpine lakes (Silvaplauna and Silsersee) with surrounding villages. Because of the steady winds blowing from Maloja Pass, Silvaplauna Lake is popular among windsurfers, yachtsmen, and kite lovers. At the end of the 19 th century, a famous German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, lived in one of the local villages for 7 years. He took walks on the Silvaplauna Lake so frequently and enjoyed the heavenly beauty of the landscape so much that a memorable plaque was installed in his honor.

In the Engadin Valley, 5 kilometers from St. Moritz, at a height of 1,797 meters above the sea level, there is a small airport called Samedan (with only one landing strip). It is the most elevated European airport. The airport used to have a regular schedule with regular flights. Unfortunately, all flights were canceled due to numerous plane crashes. However, you can catch a flight into Samedan on a private jet. The local air is very thin, especially during summertime. This is why less powerful light helicopters, which usually fly here from the valley, have a hard time taking off and flying back home. And if a helicopter has heavy cargo and a full tank of fuel, it cannot take off vertically, (like helicopters typically do) but instead has to take off in an aircraft manner, driving along the runway, gradually increasing the speed to achieve acceleration, and then gaining altitude.

The fact is that the cargo weight, which would cause no problems at the usual altitude in the valley, becomes excessive in the thin air, and a helicopter engine does not have sufficient capacity to take off vertically.

Great work! But a lot of mountain labels are wrong. For example, in the Bernina's panorama, Piz Corvatsch is Pizzo Scalino; Piz Alv is Piz Roseg. Best regards from Italy!

L ast year's winner Adam Yates and third-placed Damiano Caruso both return to this six day-stage race in Romandie, the French speaking area of west Switzerland to battle again in the region's beautiful mountain scenery.

Tour de Romandie 2024 stages

The race starts with a very short 2.3km prologue which will be contested by the overall favorites, keen to install a pecking order early on, and the short TT specialists looking for a chance to gain a leaders jersey in a big stage race.

Stage one follows the next day and it’s a lumpy 165.7km from Château d’Oex to Fribourg which will likely end in a sprint finish, although there are very view big name sprinters on the start sheet.

Stage two is where the GC action will really kick off with two huge mountains and a summit finish at Salvan/Les Marécottes. This 10km final ascent, averaging 7.3%, has slopes maxing out at 14% so will be a proper test for the climbers.

Those same climbers will the next day have to take on the 15.5km continuously undulating time trial around Oron and utilise another skill needed to win a stage race.

Stage four from Saillon to Leysin is 151.7km and takes the riders into higher territory with five classified climbs including the 10km summit finish at the end.

After this the GC battle should be stitched up with just the laps around Vernier to contend with on the final stage which will likely end in a sprint.

Prologue | Tuesday April 23, | Payerne - Payerne. 2.3km

Stage 1 | Wednesday April 24, Château d’Oex - Fribourg. 165.7km
