• Freeze water bottles and juice boxes so they can serve as both “ice blocks” that keep coolers cold, and drinks
• Pack sturdy fruits that don’t easily bruise, like oranges, apples and cantaloupes
• Freeze your favorite pasta sauce in sealable plastic bags for easy storage, laying them flat in a cooler
• Hard boiled eggs and individual yogurts are made for boating!

Stock Your Galley

When it comes to your galley, you want only what you will use. For utensils, think of the basics, like a spatula/turner, tongs, large spoon, scissors, bottle opener, and at least one quality all-purpose knife. You’ll also need a few multi-purpose pans; a frying pan, a small saucepan and an 8-quart pot for favorites like spaghetti. And don’t forget a few versatile spices, like Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper. They go a long way.

Two Coolers are Better Than One

If you have the room, bring two ice chests on board. One you can use for foods that need to stay cold or frozen. The other you can use for items like sodas, fruit and snacks. By using the two-cooler system, one cooler can be opened on a regular basis, while the other can stay closed, and colder longer. Now here’s a good idea some smart boater came up with; wash out empty gallon milk jugs, fill them with fresh water and then freeze them. Not only do they work as frozen blocks of ice, but they’re drinkable fresh water once melted.

Safe Grilling

Even though many boats have galleys, we love our grills. Portable charcoal and gas grills have always been a popular cooking alternative for boaters. However, smart boaters take great precautions when grilling on board. The fact is, unless a grill is designed specifically to be used on board a boat, don’t use it. If your grill is not designed for on board, you can always take it to the beach, and cook there.

Extra Power

Some boaters opt to bring a portable generator on board to run those luxury items they just can’t live without. You can easily find a small generator that’s lightweight and can be used to run a variety of appliances. But when shopping around, keep in mind that it will take up valuable space. Make sure it’s worth the cost in square inches.

An Inflatable has Many Uses

If it makes good sense for your particular cruise, consider towing an inflatable behind your boat. It can serve as significant stowage space, giving you more room in your boat. You can also use it as a shore tender. Win, win! However, before sunset, make sure to tie it tightly to your stern, so passing boats don’t accidentally run over your line.

A Smart Boater’s Bedtime Ritual

The most experienced boaters know that it’s very important to get settled for the night before it gets dark. That’s because chores that are simple during the day, like anchoring , putting up canvas and fetching items from your towed inflatable, are far more difficult in the dark.

Reserve Your Slip Ahead of Time

If you’re planning a trip away from home, having a slip ready and waiting at the end of a long day of cruising is a must. Good planning includes knowing where you will be docking – for your whole time away, or each night. Leaving it to the last minute may mean you don’t get your first choice. 10 Things You Need to Pack For Your Next Boat Trip

Planning a day long boat trip? Here’s a quick list of 10 things you need on a boat to help make your day a wonderful memory!

Some of you may laugh at this topic. But, take it from a girl who grew up on the prairies of Montana – not all of us know how to “do” a day of boating!;)

Thanks to some wonderful friends of ours, I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy a few day boat trips! Each time I go, I learn more tips and tricks, and I thought you’d like it if I’d pass on my new-found wisdom to you. So, get out your list and start packing. It’s time for a fun boating day on the ocean – or lake!

10+ Things for a Boat Trip + Tips and Tricks to help make the day wonderful!

1.Sunscreen + Sunglasses

I do everything in my power to avoid sunburn. Not only do I believe it to be un-healthy for my skin, I really dislike the discomfort of it!

To prevent sunburn, apply your first coat of sunscreen before you even leave the house, and reapply it throughout the day.

Also, put on your sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright glare of the sun on the water.

Although a little pricey, this sunscreen works for my sensitive and allergy prone skin happy.

2. Thin, quick-dry towel

I guess any towel would do, but a thin, quick-dry towel ( like this ) takes up less room in your bag – and yes, it will dry quick! It’s perfect if you decide to go for a swim and also doubles as a sunshade for your legs or a poncho if you get chilly in the evening!

3. Bucket hat

I admit that I don’t own one of these yet, but I want to get one like this! I borrowed one yesterday and discovered it is a perfect thing for boat day. Look for a wide brim, neck strap (so you won’t lose it in the wind), and an adjustable strap on the back of the hat that will help it fit snug on all sizes of heads. 

4.Water bottle and plenty of water!

Water is one of the most important necessities when out in the sun for a day. Be sure to drink lots of it so you don’t get sun stroke.   This type of water bottle is my highest recommendation and my friend raved about how incredible this one is. We put ice cubes in ours, then water – and our ice cubes were still clinking at the end of the day! Cold, cold water is so refreshing on a hot day.

5. Snacks in a cooler

We love this inexpensive small cooler for day trips on the boat. We fill ours with a few small ice packs and then pack snacks like:

• Tortilla roll-ups (with lunch meat, veggies, and cheese)
• Fresh fruit (cherries, blueberries, or strawberries are our favorite)
• Granola Bars

6. Shoes that can get wet

Sometimes you may decide to anchor near the shore and walk onto a beach. It’s helpful to have shoes that can go right in the water if you need on a rocky beach. These are my favorite Summer sandals that are all-purpose for me. These and these also look like nice options that are made for water.

7. A swimsuit

Although you may think you don’t want to swim, you just might change your mind after a few hours in the sun. Pack the swimsuit just in case!

(Sidenote. The older I get, the more I dislike wearing a swimsuit! However, I LOVE to swim, so I put on my swimsuit anyway. I prefer wearing a tankini top and swimsuit shorts bottoms. I think this striped  tankini top and navy swim shorts are so cute.)

8. Lip Balm with sunscreen

Swollen, chapped, sunburned lips feel awful. Don’t forget take lip balm with sunscreen to give your lips a little love throughout the day. (See what I did there?;))

9. Binoculars

You just might see some whales in the distance! Have a pair of binoculars on hand to see them up closer.

10. Your wallet or cash

There are some really cute marinas in nooks and crannies around Vancouver Island. You just may stop at one with a store. Buying an ice cold Hagaan Daas salted caramel ice cream bar will be a special treat! You’ll need some moolah to do that. This is my husband’s favorite slim wallet that is so handy!

11. Sweatshirt/ Sweatpants

Dressing in layers is the appropriate attire for boating adventures. Although the day might start sunny and hot – perfect for shorts and a tank top – it will most likely end up being chilly as the sun goes down. Packing a sweatshirt and sweatpants are perfect for the changes in weather temperature. (Also, if it looks rainy, definitely throw in some rain gear!!)

I have a sweatshirt very similar to this and I LOVE it. A pair of sweatpants are handy to just pull over a pair of shorts as the evening gets chilly.

12. Simple First Aid Kit

Although the boat you’re going on probably has its own first aid kit, I like to pack a small cosmetic bag with a few simple first aid items like band aides, tylenol or advil, & non- drowsy Dramamine (if someone gets seasick).

The Ultimate Boating Trip Checklist

According to data from Statista , over 87 million U.S. adults participate in recreational boating—which includes fishing, skiing and travelling . Each boating trip is different, but what you need to bring on your boat still remains the same. It’s important to plan your your trip the right way. Whether it’s warm or cold out, everyone loves a good boating trip. Here’s a checklist of what to bring on every boat trip, courtesy of USA Today.

Safety Equipment

First things first, safety is always of the utmost importance. It’s always good to plan in case for emergencies, and there are some basic necessities that you’ll need to bring no matter where you’re going.

• First Aid Kit – Take a first aid kit stocked to the brim with all of the essentials. Sunscreen, lip balm and anti-seasickness medications should be at the top of the list. Also take any other medications that you have to bring with you. You never know when the seas could go wild or someone could fall ill, and if you’re far from shore you’ll need to take care of them quickly.
• Life Jackets – Make sure there’s a life jacket for every single person on the boat. It’s imperative that everyone has a life jacket, whether you know how to swim or not, and whether they’re planning on going in the water or not . This includes infants and young children .
• Nautical Charts – These can make up for where GPS may fail. If anything, they’ll perfectly supplement any GPS system on board.
• Two-Way Radio – Since cell phones don’t always work at sea, it’s especially important to make sure you have one of these handy. This way you can stay in contact while at a port. Be sure to also take an international calling card with you, just in case you need it.

Sun Protection

If you’re planning on venturing out during the day, make sure to take these items to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

• Hats – Definitely don’t forget that your face needs to be covered. Whether it’s warm or cold out, you’re going to need to be able to see properly. Make sure your face is properly shielded with a nice hat.
• Polarized sunglasses – These will come in handy on top if the hat, especially when venturing out during the day.
• Sunscreen – Even if you applied sunscreen before setting sail, don’t forget to reapply throughout the day.

Don’t forget to have fun on the water! Here are some things to bring to enhance your good time.

• Camera – You’re going to want one of these for all those sunset and ocean photos.
• Binoculars – These will come in handy if you see something out at sea and want a closer look.
• Fishing gear – This includes chum kits.
• Games – Books for leisure reading time are helpful for when it’s slow, and games will be a great addition if you’re bringing your family (particularly children) out with you.

Miscellaneous Necessities

There are a few items that fall into the category of “must-haves” for your boating trip. These are:

• Adequate clothing – Bring a couple days’ worth of clothing; you’ll thank yourself later. It’ll come in handy. If you plan on going ashore for some shopping, bring clothing suitable to walk around in, and bring an extra set to change into just in case you happen to get wet.
• Toiletries – Bring everything. Pack extra soap, deodorant and lotion.
• Snacks – There will be downtime, and you’ll get hungry and sluggish. Bring gum and mints as well.
• Water – Bottled water is a necessity, particularly if you’re taking a long trip in the hot sun. The last thing you want is to become dehydrated.

Harry Harris Beach and Park

Black Point Park and Marina

Popularly known as Black Point, this is the largest public marina in Miami, Florida. It’s a beautiful spot for diving expeditions and fishing. Also, Black Point is home to the Ocean Grill Restaurant, which is one of the best eateries in the area.

Homestead Bayfront Park

Homestead Bayfront Park is a family-friendly park located in South Dade. This beachfront park is a popular jump-off point for exploring Biscayne National Park which is located nearby. It features a shallow swimming area, a beach, a full-service marina as well as a restaurant.

Attractions at Key West

Key West will be your final destination during your boat trip. Located at the tip of Florida, this tiny island is a great destination for someone who wants to unwind. It has amazing reefs, crystal blue waters, the most beautiful sunsets as well as fun restaurants.

Also, there will be fewer crowds, meaning you will have plenty of opportunities to explore the surroundings, without feeling rushed. Also, the hotels will be affordably priced during this time of the year.

Boating is a popular way to explore Southwest Florida at your own pace and enjoy nearly unlimited freedom. However, a little planning is necessary before you can head for idyllic islands and other destinations near Cape Coral. If you want to know how long it takes to get to your destination and which route to take, this tool from our cooperation partner is your perfect choice.

Just follow these 3 simple steps:

• Type in your starting point , e.g. our boat dock (3637 Del Prado Blvd S, Cape Coral, FL 33904) in close proximity to open waters. Of course, we will also deliver the rental boat to your house if you want to start from there. In this case, just type in your address. Auto-correction will do the rest. Notice that the tool only works if your house is situated at the saltwater canal with access to the Gulf of Mexico.
•  In the dropdown menu on the right, choose a  destination  for your boat trip. For example, you can display the  fastest route to the Gulf of Mexico  via Cape Coral´s canals by selecting Little Shell Island. Vacationers based in the Northwest of the city choose Matlacha Pass Bridge (Pine Island Road) instead. This option will show you the quickest way to the Gulf of Mexico.
• Click on “Show” to see the length of the route in miles, as well as the estimated travel time . Most salt water canals are designated “No Wake zones”. Therefore, the tool accounts for a boat speed of 5 mph.

We’ve all been there. You’re sitting aboard a boat, floating your way down a tranquil river while a guide points out the beautiful attractions as you pass them by. Suddenly, some guy named Jerry decides it’s lunchtime and whips out the egg sandwiches his wife made for him the previous day. Nausea sweeps through the passengers and crew aboard the boat, while everyone throws disdainful glances at Jerry. Don’t be a Jerry!

Wondering what food to bring on a boat trip? For journeys that last for longer than a few hours, often a meal will be provided. But in instances that you need to bring your own meal, you need to make sure that it’s boat friendly. 

Because boats often rock up and down by nature, you need to make sure that it’s food that won’t rock around too much. It’s also best to have a meal that doesn’t emit a strong odor (for the sake of the other passengers onboard). You never know when someone might have a slightly sensitive stomach. 

1. Pasta salad

There’s nothing that grounds the stomach and fills you up all at once like a good portion of carbs. A cold pasta salad is a great thing to bring on a boat as you won’t need to reheat it before eating, and it’s easy to slip a container into your bag. 

Whether you prefer pesto pasta or a more traditional chicken and mushroom, it’s sure to go down a treat on your boat trip. 

2. Sandwich wraps

Good ol’ sandwiches have never let me down. This is a great meal to pack for yourself if you’re in a hurry to get out the door. It’s quick and easy to make, and easy to unwrap during your trip on the boat. You can also switch it up with a variety of toppings if you happen to be someone who takes frequent boat trips. 

3. Cold fruit

Indulging in some icy cold fruit goes down such a treat while you’re sitting aboard a boat, especially if you are sitting in the sun. Not only does is it aid in cooling you down, and working as a refreshing snack, but there’s something about a cold meal that makes you feel a little more grounded aboard a boat. 

4. Pigs in a blanket

Pigs in blankets are an old classic, and while they may be more popular amongst kids, they do make for a great meal no matter your age. My preference is to pair them with a little tomato sauce, but if you prefer to eat them as is then this meal just got a whole lot easier to pack.

Boating snacks are something you’ll need if you’re going on a trip that is longer than an hour. You don’t want to be trapped on the water when your stomach starts to growl. Having a light snack also helps if you start to feel seasick as it makes your tummy feel a little more grounded. Trust me when I say, a snack can come in very handy when you’re out on the water. These are some of the very best snacks for boating. 

5. Trail mix

Trail mix is one of those trusty easy-to-pack and easy-to-eat snacks that always go down well. Not only does trail mix offer a variety of items, it is also very filling for its size. Which is exactly the sort of great boat snacks that everyone needs. 

Muffins, whether home made of store bought, offer a nice boost of energy and taste delicious. They are also fairly small, making it easy to slip one in your bag, negating the need to bring a cooler bag with you. And in my personal experience, having one less thing to carry on a boat trip is something I’ve always been grateful for.

Lemonade fruit popsicles are incredibly easy to make, and are a refreshing treat when you’re aboard a boat. All it entails is pouring lemonade and a couple of pieces of fruit into a popsicle maker, and popping it into the freezer overnight. When your boat is out on the water, you generally feel like something a little healthy, and light snacks always keep the seasickness away (if you’re prone to feeling a little queasy on the water). Adding a dip like hummus to the mix just makes the snack that much more appealing. If you’re looking for boating snacks for a party, these will be winners. 

11. Chips & salsa

Chips and dip, or chips and salsa are typical party foods, and there’s a reason for that. Cookies are my guilty pleasure, and it hasn’t taken me long to realize that many people bare this same affliction. There’s nothing better to follow up a savoury snack than a sweet one. So be sure to provide your boat party guests with something to satisfy their sweet tooth as well. A nice chocolate chip cookie is a snack that most people are unable to say no to. 

Food to Take on a Pontoon Boat

Are you heading out on a tour and wondering what food to bring on a pontoon boat? While touring, it’s often best to take snack foods, as well as foods that won’t take too much noise. It doesn’t get easier that popping a granola bar in your bag before heading to the jetty. This is perfect for travelers that are always on the move, and don’t have time to meal prep before their boat trip. It’s also a tasty treat, so you won’t be complaining that you didn’t plan ahead.

It is possible to travel from the United States to Europe without flying. This guide explains how to travel by ship from the USA to Europe. 

For one reason or another, you came here to look for information about crossing the Atlantic from America to Europe. This guide covers three different ship travel options from USA to Europe:

• Freighter Travel

I’ve previously written about flightless routes from Europe to America , but this guide focuses on the opposite direction. The examples in this post were checked in 2023.

Traveling from the United States to Europe without flying is not always easy. I know some of you will choose to fly anyway because it’s easier. In that case, I ask you to consider donating 10% of your ticket cost to a high-impact climate charity. Carbon offsetting isn’t very effective , so it’s better to support charities suggested by Giving Green instead.

1. Cruise from the USA to Europe

How can i find a transatlantic cruise from the usa to europe.

Plenty of travel companies offer cruises from the United States to various European destinations. As of now, the website Seascanner listed 108 one-way cruises from the United States to different parts of Europe .

Where do transatlantic cruises to Europe depart from?

Most transatlantic cruises from America to Europe leave from Florida. Fort Lauderdale – a part of the Miami metropolitan area – is the most popular port of departure. New York also serves as a departure point for many cruise ships, and there are even departures from Massachusetts (Boston), New Jersey (Boston), and even Texas (Galveston)!

Which are the most popular ports of entry in Europe?

For transatlantic cruises, Southampton in England, Barcelona in Spain, and Lisbon in Portugal are the top destinations. Other cruises also travel to countries like Germany, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands.

How much does it cost to travel from the USA to Europe on a cruise ship?

The cheapest cruises from the United States to Europe start at around $1100-1500 for a cabin, including meals. For example, a 7-day voyage from New York to Southampton on the luxury cruise ship Queen Mary 2 start at approximately $1400.

The duration of the journey varies depending on the departure and arrival points. The fastest transatlantic cruises to Europe leave from New York. Cruises from New York to Southampton, England, take around 7 days, while cruises to Hamburg take two days longer.

Yes, you can! At least if COVID restrictions allow it.

Compared to cruises, freighter travel is considered nearly CO2 neutral . To book a freighter voyage, you can use specialized travel agencies or contact shipping companies directly, though the latter may be more challenging.

Popular freighter travel companies include Cargo Ship Voyages , Freighter Travel (NZ) , Slowtravel , and Voyages en Cargo . I have personally used Freighter Travel, but I’m sure other companies work just as well.

What about COVID? Does the global pandemic limit freighter voyages?

Unfortunately, yes. At the time of writing (early 2023), many freighter companies around the world were not taking passengers. Some sources expect passenger sailing to resume normally in January/February 2024.

How much does it cost to travel from the USA to Europe on a freighter?

On average, traveling on a cargo ship costs $100-150 per day. A transatlantic journey typically takes around 10-15 days, resulting in a total cost between $1000-3000.

Which are the most popular ports of departure for cargo ship travel from the United States to Europe?

There are plenty! Cargo ships head out to Europe from many harbors on the East Coast. Listed from north to south, these include Boston (Massachusetts), New York, Charleston (South Carolina), Savannah (Georgia), New Orleans (Louisiana), and Houston (Texas).

Where do cargo ship voyages from America to Europe arrive?

Popular destinations in Europe for freighter voyages include Antwerp (Belgium), Cork (Ireland), Le Havre (France), Rotterdam (Netherlands), and Southampton (England). Many ships make multiple stops along the European coast, with Mediterranean cities also being accessible.

Here are a few examples with estimated prices for one person:

• This northern route includes a stop in Halifax, Canada, before crossing the Atlantic.
• At the time of writing, this route wasn’t available, but it was expected to open to passengers in mid-2023.
• Freighter voyages to the south of Europe are less common, but here’s one example of a southern route.

What else should I know about freighter travel?

Freighter travel offers an intriguing and sustainable way to explore the world. I personally haven’t traveled between America and Europe on a freighter, but I did cross the Pacific on a cargo ship during my 2-year trip around the world .

In summary, the journey was quite uneventful, but I loved it. I passed the time playing games on my laptop, savoring delicious meals, and marveling the waves. My trusty Amazon Kindle Paperwhite e-reader – one of my favorite travel essentials – kept me company.

3. Sail from the USA to Europe

Yes, traveling from the United States to Europe by boat is possible, although the reverse journey is more common. Also, direct boat travel from the United States to Europe is less prevalent. Starting your voyage from or making a stop in Bermuda is more typical.

Why is crossing the Atlantic from east to west more popular?

The trade winds are to blame. These prevailing winds blow east-to-west near the equator. The prevailing winds make a clockwise loop along the northern Atlantic.

As a result, sailing westward is aided by the wind in a warmer environment. Sailing eastward against the wind entails enduring harsher weather in the north.

I don’t own a boat. Can I still travel from the USA to Europe by boat?

Even if you don’t own a sailboat or a yacht, you can hitch a ride on a boat across the Atlantic. Websites such as Find a Crew and CrewSeekers connect captains with individuals willing to work as crewmates in exchange for the voyage.

Yacht clubs in harbors may also have notice boards for those seeking a boat or a crew. While many captains prefer crewmates with experience, it is not always necessary.

Where and when should I depart?

First, you should head to Bermuda, an archipelago about 600 miles (~1000 kilometers) away from the US East Coast. A cruise or a sailing trip from the US to Bermuda typically takes a week or less.

However, traveling to the Caribbean first before continuing to Bermuda might be more convenient. To reach the Caribbean, you can hitch a ride on a sailboat or take a ferry from Florida to the Bahamas .

According to World Cruising Wiki , the best time to sail to Bermuda is in May/June. At that point, the weather is warm but the hurricane season hasn’t reached its peak yet.

How long does it take to sail from the USA to Europe?

According to Life of Sailing , an eastward crossing of the Atlantic takes around 4 weeks. This includes a week of sailing to Bermuda, two weeks or more from Bermuda to the Azores, and another week from the Azores to the coast of Portugal.

The journey from Europe to America tends to be slightly faster.

How can I sail from the US to Europe?

From what I’ve understood, cargo ships don’t allow pets, and finding a sailing captain willing to take cats and dohs would also be a challenge. In that case, a cruise would be your best option. Lake Lucerne Cruise (Routes, Prices & More)

Lake Lucerne is one of the country’s largest lakes and a popular tourist destination in central Switzerland. Luzern has many things to do and is easily accessible by various mountain railways, including the panoramic trains that are so popular among first-time visitors to Switzerland.

A cruise on Lake Lucerne is even included in the Gotthard Panorama Express experience, and it’s one of the highlights of the entire trip. But you can explore the lake without riding any trains first, and this detailed guide to cruises on Lake Lucerne will tell you all you need to know to plan that adventure!

Lake Lucerne Tour Suggestions

If you just want to jump on a cruise and enjoy a short trip or a full day out on the lake, then the following three options might be just the ticket.

The first one is a Lake Lucerne Panoramic Sightseeing cruise which you can take at whichever time you like (as long as there is a boat). It is a one-hour affair that shows you all the highlights and an audio explanation in your choice of language.

The second option is an excellent combination of a small group Lucerne Tour , which covers all the highlights and ends with a one-hour lake cruise.

The third option is one of my favorite trips in Switzerland. A boat trip on Lake Lucerne to the lovely lakeside town of Vitznau followed by a ride up Mt Rigi on the stunning cogwheel railway.

Or, you can book a full day on the lake with all your friends on your own private boat , including stops at all the best spots, lunch at a fantastic restaurant and time to jump in the lake and swim. You can drive the boat yourself if you are up for it!

Another flexible and cheap option is this all-day ticket to jump on and off the local boats on Lake Lucerne, which include some fantastic historic steamboats. My favorite way to get to somewhere like Mt Rigi via Vitznau.

Cruising on Lake Lucerne: Overview

The important thing you need to know before you book a boat ride on Lake Lucerne is that there are two main types of lake cruises – culinary and panoramic. Panoramic boat tours take you across the lake, allowing you to discover jaw-dropping views.

On the other hand, culinary cruises are usually themed – think fondue cruises, fajita cruises, etc. You’re seated at a dining table and enjoy a delicious meal while views of the lake and surrounding mountains flash in the background.

Panoramic boat rides are affordable and usually free or discounted with the various travel passes. Culinary boat rides are more expensive because they include a meal and drinks, and you can’t get a huge discount.

Choose a sunset cruise if money isn’t an object. Lake views are more magical when contrasted against the colors of a sunset, and dinner is much more delicious when paired with such stunning views.

Also, it is possible to choose from almost 20 different boats. The fleet includes five paddle steamers and 14 motor vessels, so feel free to board the boat you like the most.

Although there are piers in many towns along the lake shore, your best bet for a cruise is to head to Lucerne. There are seven piers in the city alone, and it’s where you’ll have the most options for Lake Lucerne boat trips. Piers 1, 2, and 3 operate boat trips to all the bigger towns on the lake shore.

There’s another reason why Lucerne is the best starting point for lake cruises, and that is easy public transport access. It’s the biggest city on the shore of the lake, and it has the best train connections to other cities in Switzerland. So, if you rely on public transport, you’ll be glad to know that you can easily travel to Lucerne by train from most other towns and cities in Switzerland.

The main train station in Lucerne is directly adjacent to piers 1, 2, and 3. It’s impossible to miss – look for the large steamboats and head in their direction.

Boats operate on Lake Lucerne year-round, so you can go on a lake cruise whenever you want. The main difference between summer and winter timetables is that the boats are more frequent in the summer. Also, some cruise routes are seasonal, so you won’t be able to do all the routes if you visit in the off-season.

Generally speaking, cruising on the lake in the summer is best. It’s a much more enjoyable experience when it’s warm and sunny, plus you have many more options for cruise routes. Winter cruises can be just as magical, especially when the boats are adorned with lovely Christmas decorations, but it can be freezing on the open decks.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices depend on factors and range from 10 CHF to more than 100 CHF. You can get a day pass for the lake that lets you ride multiple boats or purchase point-to-point tickets to hop from one town to the next.

If you get a day pass for the region then you can do what you want. I believe it may also be possible to do it on a return ticket to your final destination, but you should check at the SBB train station or boat counter. Local boats on the lakes are the same as public transport in Switzerland, so the same rules apply as for normal travel passes.

I would like to take Lucerne boat cruise to Stans so I can take cable car to Mt. Stanserhorn. I will purchase Swiss Travel Pass. Where can I catch cruise to Stans? Is there an address for the pier as may be coming from Grand Europe Hotel in Lucerne.

Hi Duane Lee, All the boats in Lucerne leave right opposite the train station on the lake. You should take the bus into town to the train station. It is right on the water there near where the bus will come in. Just type in : Lucerne Bahnhofquai on google maps and you will see. I am not 100% sure which quai the stans boat leaves from, but just ask around once you get there.

Whether you are visiting Lake Como for a day or staying longer , jump aboard a boat, relax and reach your favourite destination: Bellagio ,  Varenna ,  Como , or maybe one of the  historical villas  on the shores of the lake.

The local public navigation service (Navigazione Laghi) provides several routes that connect all of the most popular towns along Lake Como’s shores, at a convenient price .

PUBLIC BOAT TOURS around Lake Como

The public boat service is provided by  Navigazione Laghi . The service operates all year round (with the exception of the southeastern branch, where it only operates in the summer), although in the low season it has a reduced frequency of service .

Below I collected the most useful information that will help you organize your transfers, but if you don’t find what you are looking for, or if you have specific questions, please contact Navigazione Laghi directly .

About the routes

There are three main routes:

Como - Colico (and back)

This passenger-only route connects the city of Como , on the southwestern tip of the lake, to Colico , on the northern tip, with intermediate stops that vary depending on the route .

The Como-Colico ferry line offers two different types of service:

• Regular service ( Corse battello in the map). This is the slowest service, stopping at most towns along the route (which vary by ride) and is perfect for those who want to enjoy the ride and take lots of pictures . In winter, this service is more limited than in summer, in favor of the express service.
• Express service ( Corse rapide ). This service has fewer stops, which vary depending on the ride. It costs a little more than the regular service, but is perfect for those with limited time .

Ferries operating only in the central area of Lake Como

There are two different types of services in this area as well:

• Ferries that allow the transport of vehicles ( Corse traghetto in the map) only operate between the towns of Bellagio , Varenna , Menaggio , and Cadenabbia . In the Navigazione Laghi search form , these piers are characterized by the word "Traghetto".
• Due to the high influx of tourists, this area also has several passenger-only shuttle services connecting towns in the central area. Since stops may vary by shuttle type, always use the search form on the Navigazione Laghi website to get the most up-to-date schedules.

Lecco - Bellagio (and back)

This passenger-only route connects Lecco , on the southeastern tip of the lake, to Bellagio, on the promontory between the three branches of the lake. It only operates in the summer .

You can buy different types of tickets, the rates of which vary depending on several factors: distance between the point of departure and the point of arrival, presence of intermediate stops, surcharges for fast service , etc.

The best thing you can do to know the exact price of your trip is to visit the website of the company and use their search form . However, below is an overview of what you can get.

Types of tickets

• One-way and round-trip tickets : buy this ticket if you want to travel (and travel back) to a specific destination, without intermediate stops (you can sail from Como to Bellagio but without getting off at Argegno for a coffee).
• Free-circulation tickets : holders of these tickets are entitled to make intermediate stops between the piers for which the ticket was issued (if you want to visit multiple destinations by lake in a single day, this is probably the best choice). If available, this type of pass can be valid for one day or six days , depending on your travel needs.

Where to buy tickets

You can currently purchase tickets online   (on Navigazione Laghi's website ) for regular service trips only (which means: no vehicle transportation, no express service) for the following trip types:

• one-way/return trips
• free-circulation tickets (trips with intermediate stops)

Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at the ticket office near the dock  of almost any town ( onboard purchase – with cash/credit card and without any additional cost – is allowed in case of towns with no ticket office). People with disabilities can always buy the ticket on board without extra charge.

Keep in mind that during the peak season the turnout at ticket offices can be very high. If you can, buy your ticket online to avoid standing in line under the sun.

All mid-lake towns have their own charm, maybe I would suggest you to choose one of the less crowded (such as Cadenabbia or Lenno), then consider that you can reach all others by ferry in a matter of minutes. Is it possible to take the car across Lake Como from Varenna to the Villa? I saw that there’s a Griante to Varenna ferry, but it looks separate from the Navigazione Laghi ferry service. Hi Judy, the ferry from Varenna to Cadenabbia is also operated by Navigazione Laghi. So, as you said, if you want to take your own car, the best option is to get to Cadenabbia by ferry and then drive to Via degli Artigiani (8 minute drive), where you will leave your car and then decide whether to walk or take a taxi boat to Villa Balbianello . I hope this helps you!

We want to make a round trip starting from Como (around 10 am), with 2 stops. First one in Varenna than in Bellagio from where we have to return to Como (no later than 21 hrs). Timetables and routes are a little bit complicated to organise easily our trip. Could you give us a hint which would be the best option considering our limited time to visit (about 8 hrs) both towns and a resonable fares for this (either regular or rapid boats)?

Hi Claudio, in my opinion the opposite is preferable, that is: first, take the ferry from Como to Bellagio (about an hour via fast service ferry). From there, take the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna (15 minutes, max 30). Once you’ve visited Varenna, you can take the fast service from Varenna to Como (not too late-I think the last one of the day is around 7 p.m.). I know it is difficult to read their timetables, which is why I suggest you use the search form directly.

On the navigazionelaghi.it website, there are two options to select – eg. Varenna or Varenna (Traghetto). The first one I believe is the mid lake shuttle and the first service from Varenna is 9:23, while the second one is the car ferry and has earlier services. If I buy a one way ticket or a free circulation ticket, can I take any of these services or do I have to stick to only the one I buy a ticket for? Is the free circulation ticket only for the mid lake shuttle? Is there a different dock for the shuttle and the ferry at Varenna and Bellagio? Thank you!

Hi Claudine, useful questions for other readers as well. You don’t have to worry: if you buy the free circulation ticket you can take any kind of ferry you want, as long as you move within the validity area of the ticket you chose to buy. The piers may be different (for example, in Bellagio there is one where you take the regular ferry and another where you have to board if you have a car – or even if you don’t have it), but in any case it is best to ask the shore staff to make sure you take the right boat 😀 Best!

At this time, the boats are certainly quieter than in the high season. But the thing that worries me is that with the current winter schedule you will hardly be able to visit all these towns in one day, taking even two-hour breaks. I think it’s better to split the visits into two days!

Ciao Alessandro, we are arriving in Como by train on 25May23. Two questions please: 1) We are staying in Griante. That is the Tremezzo boat stop, yes? 2) Roughly how often do boats leave from Como? Hi John, Griante is a hamlet of Cadenabbia, where the pier from which car ferries also depart is located. But yes, there is also the pier in Tremezzo a short distance away. What they told you is correct, there are not very many boats, even in the high season. Basically, while waiting for the new schedules to come out, consider one or maximum two rides per hour.

I am planning to spend 1 day travelling to Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio from Como. Hello Marco, yes, what you say is theoretically correct. But I honestly wouldn’t advise you to visit all these destinations in one day: the distances are greater than you might think, the boat rides are not that frequent, and then I would recommend devoting at least a couple of hours to each town. I’m afraid you’ll have to extend your trip or remove a town from the itinerary!

For example, from Bellagio you can take the c30 that takes you to Nesso in about 25-30 minutes, whereas to reach Lenno you can take the ferry to one of the more connected villages on the other side (e.g., Cadenabbia), and from there take the C10 that takes you to Lenno.

When I try to search fast service tickets online, I see following error: “You have included the express service or selected accompanying vehicle: you can purchase these services EXCLUSIVELY at the ground ticket offices.” 2. How many hours minimum should we budget for if we want to travel from “Como” via ferry and we want to cover Bellagio and Varena (couple of hours at each of those locations , and come back. 3. We will be travelling from Milan with 3 suitcases to Giovanni S Como station. Is there luggage storage available at the station ? We want to take a train to Lugano from that station in evening.

Hi Umesh, so sorry for the delay but I had missed your comment! Anyway I confirm that currently fast service tickets can only be done at ground ticket offices. Online you can only check for the actual ride. I know, it’s all a bit strange…. Anyway, if you want to easily visit both Bellagio and Varenna from Como, I recommend budgeting for a full day (say from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Here you can find some luggage storage facilities available in the city of Como. Hope this helps!

Hi Michele, yes, it is possible to do what you said, but you have to plan your trip carefully, because the rides are generally not that frequent. I’ve just checked on Navigazione Laghi website and it looks like you can’t buy the free circulation ticket that covers the Varenna – Nesso area… one of Lake Como’s mysteries! So in this case I recommend you buy separate individual tickets, you can easily do this online so you will avoid standing in line. Hope this helps!

Hi Taylor, I’m afraid visiting 3 towns in one day is a bit much. I would advise you to choose only 2 towns from Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna or, if you don’t want to give up, make sure you plan your travels well, leave early in the morning and travel at a good pace. That said, you can certainly buy the Como-Menaggio free circulation day pass and move freely in this area (as the name of the pass suggests :D). Keep in mind, however, that if you want to return to Como using the fast boat service, you will have to go to the Menaggio ticket office to purchase the appropriate supplement (as it is not purchasable online). Hi there! Trying to purchase tickets online but am unsure which option to choose. I’m staying in Varenna in late August and am trying to get to Lenno (to visit Villa del Balbianello) and visit Bellagio and maybe Mennagio all in a day. I know the start point would obviously be Varenna, but what would the end point be for the ticket. If I enter Varenna and Lenno and purchase the day pass would i be able to visit Bellagio and Menaggio or how does that work. Hi Araceli, since all of the destinations you mentioned are in the central area of the lake, you can purchase a “Free circulation ticket” that has Varenna as its starting point and any of the above towns as its destination. As you can see from – sorry – this very complicated table , the type of route connecting Varenna to Lenno / Bellagio / Menaggio is always marked with the number 3. So, a Free circulation ticket will cost you €15 for the whole day (valid only for regular service, not rapid service). Hope this helps!

Hi Wendy, the best thing to do in my opinion is to buy online a “Free circulation ticket” which covers the Como-Varenna area and costs €25.80 for the whole day. Remember though that with this ticket you cannot take the express service. If you want to use an express service for one of the rides you want to take, you will have to buy the corresponding supplement at the ground ticket offices.

It appears the best option is to buy a day pass cono- varenna. Please correct me if I am wrong. 1 person travelling with me is above 65 years old. Hi, yes, you can purchase the day pass that covers the entire area. The drawback is that, online, you can only purchase this type of pass if, for the travel times you are interested in, there is actually a regular run that connects both destinations (either directly or with a stopover). If this type of ride does not exist, but the return from Varenna is only available through the express service, you do not have the option of purchasing the day-pass online – you can do this at the ticket office, but if the only service that will take you back to Como is the express ride, then when you are in Varenna you will still have to stand in line to buy the supplement. I’m sorry, I know it’s a mess, but that’s how Lake Como ferry service is currently run 🥲 For any other information, please contact the company’s website directly.

Hi Rose, yes I suggest you buy it in advance (preferably around late afternoon when the queues for purchasing tickets are shorter). I honestly don’t know the opening hours but I don’t think they close much past 7 pm.

Hello ! I come to Lake Como in early September, and i’d like to walk the Greenway del Lago, from Colonno to Cadenabbia. My Bnb is located in Varenna. What would you recommend ? As i don’t see how to go with the ferry from Varenna to Colonno in the morning and then back to Varenna from Cadenabbia in the afternoon. Thank you for the help !

Hi, you can do it the other way around. Take the ferry from Varenna to Cadenabbia, and from there proceed south. At the end of your walk, once you get to Colonno, you can go back north on the C10 bus and, again, take the ferry from Cadenabbia to Varenna.

Hi – Can you take the Traghetto ferry even if you do not have a car? If yes, how easy is the walk between the Bellagio passenger ferry terminal and the Bellagio Treghetto terminal? Will be arriving on a passenger ferry at 17:57 at the Bellagio passenger ferry and hoping to catch the 18:15 Bellagio Traghetto ferry to Varenna. Hi Diane, yes, you can take the vehicle ferry even without a vehicle. The distance between the two different terminals in Bellagio is a 5-minute walk, so I’d say you’re just in time 🙂

Hi, I’m getting the train to Varenna, I want to visit Bellagio and Menaggio. Can I get a one day pass to cover these towns and come back to Varenna? Which destination do I put into the ticket to cover all three destinations?

Also if I wanted to visit como as well as Bellagio and menaggio before returning to Varenna is this all included in the one day pass? And what do I put in the destination for the one day pass?

Hi Natasha, currently it seems impossible to purchase the day-pass on the Navigazione Laghi website. I recommend that you purchase tickets for each route separately (the service charge for connecting between destinations in the central lake area is always 4.60€ each way). I suggest you buy the tickets a few days in advance as online they sell out very soon (if it happens you can still head to the land-based ticket offices). For any other information, please write directly to the company so that sooner or later they will be able to offer a service that meets expectations 🙂

Hi Alessandro, We will be traveling from Saronno, is the Como Nord Lago the right station that is a 5 min walk from the ferry pier at Piazza Cavour? We are hoping to get to Bellagio and take in some views, are the hydrofoil boats’ seat inside and what kind of views do they provide? Hi Hannah, I confirm that Como Lago station is a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Cavour, in front of which is the boat ticket office. If you are interested in enjoying the beautiful views on the ferry from Como to Bellagio (in this regard, I invite you to see my Reel !) you may be better off using the regular service, as the hydrofoils have mostly indoor seats. The advantage is also that you can buy this kind of ticket online. As for the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna, again you can safely buy your ticket online (but I advise you not to do it at the last minute because tickets can be sold-out). Hope this helps!

Hi Will, as far as I know it is: the ticket you buy online must be used on the day itself but not necessarily for a ride at a specific time. On this, I suggest you write to the company’s website so they can give you more accurate information. October is one of the best times to visit Lake Como: the area is not congested with tourists, the weather is still good, and transportation services are operating pretty much like in summer, so go easy!

Hi Alessandro, we are traveling from Milan to Bellagio by train spending the night in Bellano. Do you know if there is a luggage storage at the Bellagio ferry port or Bellagio train stop? Is it easy to take a ferry from Bellano to Bellagio and back? Do they run as frequently as from Bellagio to Varenna?

Hi Hannah, take a look at these luggage storage facilities around Lake Como (there is also one in Bellano). Consider that there are not very many boats connecting Bellano to Bellagio. Every day there are about 2 or 3 that go from Bellagio to Bellano and as many that go the other way around. I recommend that you get an idea of how the Lake Como ferry tours work in this current page and for any other information on this you can contact the official company. What I can recommend, as an alternative, is to embark in Varenna (from which departures are more frequent) and which can be reached by train or D21 bus .

Hi Alessandro, great feedback for everyone – hope you can help us? 5 adults coming from Milan on an early train to Como in June 2024. We will have a one day Free Circulation Pass and hoping to go to Lenno to catch a boat shuttle to see Villa del Balbianello and visit Bellagio and Varenna back to Como to catch train to Milan. Hi Kym, I think your plan requires more time than just one day. Instead, my advice is to take the train to Varenna, from where you can take the ferry to Bellagio. This would greatly reduce the time and you could also include in your day a visit to Villa Monastero or Villa Melzi ! How about it?

Hi, Argegno is definitely an important junction and therefore can count on several daily runs, for example going north now I counted about 10. To start the Lake Como Greenway you can take the C10 bus from Argegno and get off immediately afterwards, at Colonno, where the starting point is located.

Hi Olivia, Bellagio has two piers. This one allows you to board ferries that also admit vehicles (those that only take you to Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Varenna). This one , on the other hand, is for ferries designed to transport people only. Bellano’s pier can be found here . I hope I have helped you!

What to know about the cargo ship Dali, a mid-sized ocean monster that took down a Baltimore bridge

Crews were set to begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge in Baltimore on Friday. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said a large crane, which can lift up to 1,000 tons, would be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that collided with it this week.

Here’s what to know about the cargo ship Dali that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and leaving six bridge construction workers presumed dead.

MONSTERS OF THE OCEAN

If stood upright, the Dali would reach almost to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or about two-thirds of the way up the Empire State Building in New York.

It can carry the equivalent of almost 10,000 standard-sized metal shipping containers, and at the time of the accident was carrying nearly 4,700 containers. But while those figures are impressive, the Dali pales in comparison to the world’s largest container ships, which can carry more than 24,000 containers. There are environmental and economic advantages to operating giant container ships , but their sheer size and weight make them difficult to maneuver and stop — especially when something goes wrong.

Dali length: 984 feet (300 meters). Weight: 95,000 tons when empty.

Capacity: 10,000 20-foot (6-meter) containers.

MAYDAY CALL SAVES LIVES

The ship shares a name with one of history’s most celebrated artists, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the Dali was launched in late 2014. It’s owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, flies a Singapore flag and is powered by diesel engines.

Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the Dali for a planned trip from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the ship didn’t get far, with the crew sending a mayday call early Tuesday saying they had lost power and had no control of the steering system. Minutes later, the ship rammed one of the bridge’s columns, causing the entire structure to collapse within seconds.

The ship was moving at about 8 knots, or 9 mph (15 kph). The mayday gave just enough time for authorities to stop bridge traffic and likely prevent more deaths , but not enough time to clear the construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge. Divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of two of the workers.

All of the nearly two dozen crew members from the Dali were accounted for after the accident, with one taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

PASSED PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS

The Dali passed a June 2023 inspection in Chile. A faulty pressure gauge for the fuel heaters was identified but fixed before the vessel left the port, according to authorities. The Dali was then inspected in September by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York, and no problems were found. Before it left Baltimore, the ship underwent routine engine maintenance, according to the Coast Guard.

Federal and state officials say the crash appears to be an accident.

The Coast Guard has downloaded the voyage data recorder and sent it to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is building a timeline of what led to the crash, and a preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks. Singapore also plans to carry out its own investigation, which it says will be to identify lessons for the future rather than determine liability.

WHAT’S NEXT

In addition to trying to clear the channel floor of the bridge debris, officials will need to assess the damage to the Dali and make sure it doesn’t leak fuel or sink. Investigators found damage to at least 13 containers on the ship.

The Dali will then likely be towed back to the port and the cargo offloaded.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says it’s too early to say how long it will take to reopen the Port of Baltimore or replace the destroyed bridge. He noted it initially took five years to build the bridge .

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

Eight unlucky tourists were forced to add some unexpected stops to their vacation when a Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) ship marooned them off the west coast of Africa , turning their dream getaway into a travel nightmare.

The group—which included a pregnant woman, four elderly people, and one person with a heart condition—was stranded on São Tomé and Príncipe without any credit cards or medication. They had failed to make it back to the Norwegian Dawn by its 3 p.m. departure time on Wednesday, and said the cruise ship refused to answer their calls for help as they crossed international borders and tried to catch up with it.

“We’ve never had anything like this happen before,” Jill Campbell, one of the passengers, told WRAL .

The Dawn was still docked when the passengers arrived after the cutoff time, Campbell and her husband, Jay, told U.S. media outlets. But to their dismay, cruise personnel refused to let the group aboard and ignored their calls.

“The harbor master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call,” Jay Campbell told ABC 4 News . He described a frustrating conversation with NCL’s customer service that sent him in circles trying to get in touch with someone.

“We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number, they said ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Campbell said.

They were even ferried out to the cruise ship by speedboat, thanks to the island’s coast guard, but again refused entry, Campbell said. Cruise personnel returned their passports to the dock but held onto any credit cards, medications, and other essentials that were left on board.

Back on the island, the group encountered yet another cruise passenger who’d been abandoned—an 80-year-old who was hospitalized and then left without money when the ship took off without her. Thankfully, the group helped the 80-year-old on a flight back to the U.S., while the rest of the group appealed to the U.S. embassy in nearby Angola to figure out how to reunite with the ship.

On Sunday, the passengers traveled to The Gambia in the hopes of catching the Norwegian Dawn at port. But the ship never made port in The Gambia—a low tide prevented it from docking, and instead it sailed on towards neighboring Senegal, where the passengers will try to catch it again.

In response, Norwegian Cruise Line called the situation “unfortunate” but shifted responsibility to the passengers for missing the departure deadline.

“Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” they said in a statement , adding that the departure time was “communicated broadly” all over the vessel. “Guests are responsible for any necessary travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

The cruise line also said it had been coordinating with “local authorities” to understand what the guests would need if they were to rejoin the ship, and that it was “in communication with the guests.”

That statement is at odds with what the Campbells told American media. As of Sunday, they said they had not heard back from the cruise line.
