Faceless Forever

  • View history

The Residents ultimately performed a truncated run of three Dog Stab! shows in California in September 2021. After further postponements, the retooled tour underwent further development and resumed as Faceless Forever with a special preview performance at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October 2022. On January 14th 2023, The Residents performed a "secret" 50th Anniversary show at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, featuring appearances from guests including Les Claypool of Primus , David J of Bauhaus and composer Ego Plum .

After three years of delays, cancellations and postponements, Faceless Forever officially commenced on January 26th with a show in Bourges, France, and concluded with three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco from April 17th through 19th. Most shows on the tour were preceded by a screening of The Residents' 2022 feature film, Triple Trouble .

The Residents ' Dog Stab! tour was announced on November 21st 2019, with dates in America and Canada in April and May 2020. The tour was intended to promote the release of the group's then-upcoming studio album Metal, Meat & Bone , as well as a number of selected songs from the 1978 album Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen . [2]

Beginning in late 2019, the COVID-19 coronavirus began to spread across the world. In March 2020, it was officially declared a global pandemic. The planned Dog Stab! tour dates were postponed until further notice. [3] On April 1st, rescheduled American and Canadian dates were announced for April and May 2021. [4] These shows were cancelled only a week before the tour was scheduled to begin, with the tour then being rescheduled to August and September, with a run of European shows announced the following month.

With the repeated postponements and delays, the start of the Dog Stab! tour had been pushed so close to The Residents ' 50th Anniversary in 2022 that it was decided the show would evolve in order to spotlight this as a theme. To this end, the show was split into halves dedicated to Metal, Meat & Bone and Duck Stab! , with an added encore featuring material from the 1976 album The Third Reich 'n Roll , [5] designed to further emphasize the "50th Anniversary" aspect of the show. [6]

With these changes to the set list, Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation noted that the show had changed so substantially from its original concept that, had it originally been conceived as such, it likely would not have been titled "Dog Stab!", but since a great deal of promotional material had already been created and released, it was decided (for the time being) to continue the tour using this title. [6] The Residents premiered the Duck Stab! portion of the show in June 2021, with the airing of the live-in-the-studio TV special Duck Stab Alive! on the streaming platform Night Flight Plus . [7]

On August 11th 2021, fans who had purchased tickets to a number of shows on the American leg of the Dog Stab! tour were notified that the tour would be cancelled. Shortly thereafter, the cancellation of all but the last three shows on the North American tour was confirmed through messages posted on The Residents ' official website . [8] [9] [10] The Residents ultimately commenced the truncated Dog Stab! tour with a show at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles on September 15th 2021. The mini-tour continued with a second show at the Castro in San Francisco on the 17th, and concluded with a third show at the Rio in Santa Cruz on the 18th.

Dog Stab! was then expected to continue in January and February 2022 with a string of dates across Europe and the United Kingdom. In December 2021, however, it was announced that this leg of the tour had been postponed by 12 months due to increasing COVID-19 restrictions. [11] All dates on the leg were then rescheduled to take place in January and February 2023. An additional German show at the Kampnagel in Hamburg on February 7th was added in August 2022; this addition followed the cancellation of a short residency of God In 3 Persons in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Faceless Forever [ ]

On September 9th 2022 The Residents announced a preview performance of their 50th Anniversary show, now titled Faceless Forever, as part of the Mill Valley Film Festival at the Sweetwater Music Hall on October 13th, in anticipation of the Californian premiere of the group's feature film Triple Trouble two days later. [12] At the end of the month The Residents released promotional poster art for Faceless Forever, with the subtitle "50th Anniversary Dog Stab Tour", reflecting the new show's origins in the earlier, planned Dog Stab! show.

The show's new title also matches that of a hardcover encyclopedia about The Residents written by Jim Knipfel and Brian Poole (among others), released through mail order by Cherry Red Records on December 9th. On December 8th The Residents announced a new string of American dates. On January 14th 2023, two weeks prior to the official debut of the tour, The Residents held a "secret" 50th Anniversary show at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, featuring several guest performers including the San Francisco Girls Chorus , pianist Sarah Cahill , Conspiracy of Beards , Les Claypool , Ego Plum , David J , and many others.

After three years of cancellations and delays, The Residents successfully commenced the first European leg of their 50th Anniversary tour, with a show at Conservatoire de Bourges, Bourges, France. The European leg concluded on February 21st with a show at the Savoy Theatre in Helsinki, Finland. The new version of the show offered a wider retrospective of The Residents' work, with less emphasis on Metal, Meat & Bone and Duck Stab! than had been seen in the earlier Dog Stab! shows.

The American leg of the Faceless Forever tour began on March 16th 2023 with a show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, and continued throughout America (with one show in Canada) over the following month, ending with three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco from April 17th through 19th. The set list of the American leg of the tour featured two songs not performed on the European tour, " She Called Me Doggy " and " When We Were Young ".

At "the stroke of midnight" on April 20th 2023, immediately after the conclusion of the tour, The Residents parted ways with their long-time collaborator, guitarist Nolan Cook . [13] [14] Although Cook was planned to join the group on a UK/Europe mini-tour of their theatrical show God In 3 Persons - Live! in April 2024, [15] those shows were ultimately cancelled, leaving the last date of the Faceless Forever tour as Cook's final performance with The Residents.

‘Faceless Forever’: The Residents hit the road for their fiftieth anniversary!

When everyone lives in the future, the present is au revoir. —Delta Nudes

Last Christmas marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Residents’ first release, “Santa Dog.” Ralph Records gave away most of the initial pressing as a free gift, mailing copies of the double seven-inch record, which presented itself as a compilation of songs by four groovy groups, to friends, tastemakers, and prominent figures.

If the White House had not refused its complimentary copy of “Santa Dog,” President Nixon, his wife Pat, and their daughters, Tricia and Julie, would not have been deprived of the chance to spin it a few times on the Blue Room hi-fi as the Yule log crackled in the fireplace and the bombs of Operation Linebacker II pulverized North Vietnam. Though side one, “Fire,” credited to Ivory and the Brain Eaters, would have been the Nixons’ likely favorite, the First Family would have read in the sleeve notes that side four, “Aircraft Damage” (B Barnes–C America), credited to Arf and Omega featuring the Singing Lawn Chairs, was “FROM THE RALPH FILM ‘VILENESS FATS’ COMING SOON TO A THEATER NEAR YOU.”

Fifty years is a long time. Today, Dick and Pat are buried in the cold ground, original copies of “Santa Dog” fetch as much as a Pontiac Grand Prix, and you can tell Tricia and Julie that Vileness Fats really is coming to a theater near them! Sort of: every date of the imminent “Faceless Forever” U.S. tour will open with a screening of Triple Trouble , the Residents’ new feature film, which revisits their abandoned movie project of the early seventies and incorporates some of its footage into a brain-syruping psychodrama about Randy Rose, Jr., a lapsed priest harried by fungus in his encore career as a plumber.

Like the new Residents encyclopedia by Jim Knipfel and Brian Poole (also titled Faceless Forever ), the Triple Trouble screenings and live shows are part of the Residents’ fiftieth anniversary festivities. I caught up with the group’s spokesperson, Cryptic Corporation President Homer Flynn, who once again graciously fielded my questions about the Residents’ diet, wardrobe, hair products, LaserDisc easter eggs and CD-ROM cheat codes.

the residents faceless forever tour

What can you tell me about the tour?

Well, you know, it’s a fiftieth anniversary tour, so it’s really retrospective. I mean, the selection of material for this tour, you know, came about in a kind of almost random, haphazard way. I mean, this is the third time it’s been scheduled. So it started out two, three years ago as a “Dog Stab” tour with the idea at that time that we were mainly interested in having them promote the Metal, Meat & Bone album, which was new at that point. But then we added a good chunk of Duck Stab! material to that. Kind of trying to come up with a balance between what was new and we wanted to promote and what the band wanted to play and then what the fans were interested in. And then that tour got cancelled, and then rescheduled and slightly jiggered around a little bit, and then that one got cancelled.

the residents faceless forever tour

I’m still kicking myself for missing the Duck Stab! shows. There was a Third Reich ‘n Roll encore?

There was indeed. Yeah, and you know they had a lot of fun with that. I mean, you know interestingly, there is a guy, [Scott Colburn], an audio engineer in Seattle, who has been doing a lot of the remastering of the back catalog series that Cherry Red has been putting out, and he’s a huge fan. He’s a great guy. And basically, he volunteered to go back and digitize all of the old multitrack original tapes. So all of a sudden, you know, you could take all of the original tracks from Duck Stab! and put them into Logic if you wanted to. And then all of a sudden that material was accessible again, and they got very excited about that idea.

They only did, that was kind of like, I call it the “California mini-tour.” It was the tour a year and a half ago that then ultimately, most of it was canceled other than four or five, three or four California shows. So they never really got to the point with the Third Reich ‘n Roll material where they were super comfortable with it, because part of what’s happening is stuff is coming from the original tapes, and then part of it is being played, and it’s all pretty loose. And I think everybody would agree that some of it works better than others.

But I think they have in mind going back and revisiting that again. I mean, you know, they could do a suite from Eskimo if they wanted to. There’s a lot of possibilities with that material.

Since you mentioned it, there was a plan for an Eskimo opera or stage show at one time, right? But I don’t think that’s ever been a live show.

No, there never has. I mean, interestingly, this is my favorite story about that: there is a guy who was a programmer at the South Bank Center in London, a guy named Glenn Max. And Glenn was a big Residents fan. He booked them for a few different festivals and events while he was there. And there was a period, I don’t know, ten or twelve years ago, something like that, when the South Bank Center was shut down for remodeling, and he had it in his mind, he was looking for other venues around London in order to try to do different shows. One of his ideas was to do a version of Eskimo on ice.

That’s wonderful!

the residents faceless forever tour

I saw a screener of Triple Trouble yesterday, and I was wondering if there was a similar process for the soundtrack, because it does seem like there’s bits of Vileness Fats music and some kind of gamelan-sounding, maybe late- or mid-seventies Residents stuff kind of worked into that.

In a way, Triple Trouble is Vileness Fats brought forward, and so there is definitely nods to Vileness Fats within it and there are places where that soundtrack music was used. I mean, as far as the gamelan stuff goes, it makes me kind of curious as to what specifically you heard that you thought that about, ‘cause there’s no other—I’m trying to think—I don’t think there’s any other legacy material than Vileness Fats in there. I think all the rest of it was composed new.

I was probably using my imagination.

Well, the Residents love that. I mean, anytime they can enable somebody’s imagination, that’s a win.

I sort of thought of Al and Ollie Gump as maybe a reflection of Arf and Omega Berry, in terms of nods to Vileness Fats .

Yeah, yeah, well that’s definitely there. And you know, there was a whole script. You know, Triple Trouble is Triple Trouble because what happened was that, you know, filmmaker Don Hardy made a documentary on the Residents, Theory of Obscurity, in 2015. And he was in the process of gathering up as much Residents visual material as he could as he edited the film. And he became so intrigued with the original Vileness Fats material that ultimately that inspired the Residents, not so much to want to finish it, but really to kind of go back and revisit it, and they wrote the Double Trouble screenplay. The Double Trouble screenplay is where the protagonist of that has just found a footlocker full of all the original Vileness Fats material. He becomes obsessed with it and realizes that, or he fantasizes that, his own life is paralleling the life of the protagonist of Vileness Fats. And so that’s the reason why, you know, Al and Ollie are echoing Arf and Omega from Vileness Fats .

And interestingly, that idea for the protagonist whose life is echoing the life of a character in a fictitious world, ultimately, that came from a movie, I think it was 1946? Ronald Colman, and it was called A Double Life. I think that movie either won an Academy Award or Ronald Colman won an Academy Award for Best Actor for that. In that movie, Ronald Colman is playing Othello, I think, and starts feeling like his life is paralleling the life of Othello. It’s a very interesting movie. That’s kind of where they lifted that idea for the parallel lives. We were in the process of raising money for that film when the lockdown came along, bam!

the residents faceless forever tour

Sutro Tower [which features prominently in Triple Trouble ] was a big deal when the Residents came to San Francisco, I imagine, right? Wasn’t that a big local political issue?

It was, and that was right around that time. I forget exactly when Sutro Tower [went up], but I think it was ‘70, ‘71, ‘72, and ‘72 is when they started shooting Vileness Fats. So they were definitely overlapping there, and it was a big deal. I mean, you know, you always wonder how politicians pull stuff off, and it was like Sutro Tower just kind of appeared overnight [laughs]. And, you know, in some ways, it’s a monstrosity. In other ways, you know, it’s become kind of an interesting landmark over time. But I think if people had been given a choice as to whether that was going to go up or not, they would have definitely been thumbs down.

I guess it’s probably part of necessity and the fact that COVID lockdowns were going on. But watching the movie, often, when I think of San Francisco these days, I think of how much it’s changed over the last 30 or 40 years. But seeing these locations without any people in the background, I don’t know, it made me think that San Francisco maybe hadn’t changed all that much.

Well, I mean, you know, it’s kind of yes and no. I mean, people talk about how much it’s changed. You know, I moved here in 1969 and, you know, at that time and early, mid seventies and stuff, there were people that were telling me how much it had changed!

How great it was back in the fifties and stuff. San Francisco is a lovely city. I really enjoy living here. And there’s definitely a homeless problem, for sure. But I guess it’s worse than it had—it’s always been there. But I guess it’s worse. There certainly weren’t people sleeping in tents on sidewalks twenty years ago.

the residents faceless forever tour

Can you tell me anything about the genesis of the encyclopedia, how that came about?

Well, honestly, Richard [Anderson] is the one who kind of motivated that and honestly, I have to say, I was kind of skeptical at the time. You know, it seemed like an awful lot of work. You know, personally, I had too much, I was terrified [laughing] that they were gonna try to pull me into it, because I had too much stuff going on already. And then you know, [encyclopedia co-author] Jim Knipfel, I’m good friends with, and I can remember Jim reporting to me once or twice going, “Oh, God, this thing, it’s horrible. It’s just not coming together. Writing’s not very good, and blah, blah, blah.” And I’m going, ugh.

But then ultimately over time, Jim became convinced. And in all honesty, I have seen the book, I haven’t gone through it page by page, but I’ve actually been quite impressed with what I’ve seen.

Faceless Forever is the name of both the tour and the book. Is there any connection between those names?

No, not really.

Or maybe the better question is where the title came from.

It just kind of popped up in a conversation between me and some of the Residents. And they’ve been referred to any number of times by me and other people as “the Faceless Four,” kind of a nice, catchy alliteration. And there was just some point that the phrase “faceless forever” popped up. And I kind of went, oh, hmm, I have to go back and revisit that. And ultimately, it just more or less evolved into a branding term for the fiftieth anniversary.

I guess I like it in part ‘cause it points to the future. Faceless then, faceless now, faceless tomorrow.

the residents faceless forever tour

How long have they been working with Eric Drew Feldman?

You know, they’ve worked off and on with Eric. You know, Eric was Snakefinger’s band leader.

As an interesting aside, when Philip [“Snakefinger” Lithman] had his heart attack in Austria and died, they had just played at a club that night. And the club actually had a few rooms that they let bands stay in. And Eric was the one who found Philip’s body the next morning.

Yeah. But so the connection with Eric goes back that far. Now, he played with them… oh, I think it was the Demons Dance Alone tour that he played on. But had never been closely associated, more of a colleague, friend. But what happened, Hardy Fox was my partner in crime, whatever, managing, running, dealing with the Residents for well over forty years, and he died in 2018. Well, Hardy was really the architect of the Residents’ sound. And for them to continue, we needed somebody that could fill that role. And I wasn’t even aware of what an incredibly accomplished producer Eric is. And so ultimately people started talking to him. He was expressing interest, and the transition in my mind was almost seamless, much, much more so than than I had expected.

the residents faceless forever tour

Anything on the horizon, any recording projects coming out or anything the Residents are working on this year that you can tell me about?

Well, they are working on a new project. And they’ve already recorded about ninety minutes worth of new music. And this is actually for a project—it will certainly be their next album. Now, what they would like to do—they were extremely happy with the God in Three Persons production. The only real problem with that is that it’s an expensive show. It takes 14 or 15 people to do it, and they haven’t been able to get it out as much as they wanted. I mean, they’re still—they haven’t gotten it to Europe. I think it’s a show that could virtually play forever in Europe. So ultimately, though, the new thing that they’re writing, in a way, the hope is that it would ultimately be more of a theatrical thing if it goes on to a stage production beyond the album. And they have recently made contact with a classical composer who is a huge Residents fan, and so the whole idea is to get the album done and then see what they can do with him in terms of making a stage production out of it. But that would be two, three, four years down the line. And hopefully [the album] will get finished sometime this year.

Well, that would be the first time they’ve done that kind of a collaboration, right? I’m trying to think if there’s been a collaboration like that with a composer.

He’s really a conductor. If I said composer, that was wrong. Although, I mean, I’m sure he does compose, but he’s primarily a classical conductor. And so he would probably bring players in to do parts, as the album starts coming together. And then he’s very connected in that world in terms of hoping to find interest in terms of turning it into a theater piece.

For detailed information regarding DUCK STAB!; METAL, MEAT & BONE; and Triple Trouble, please see below:

DUCK STAB ! Released in 1978, DUCK STAB! was an EP featuring seven songs sung clearly, with understandable (if nonsensical) lyrics -- a first for The Residents. The EP was a runaway success. Quickly selling out of the first pressing, The Cryptic Corporation soon did a second pressing. Unfortunately, the sound quality of the EP was poor because The Residents had tried to squeeze sixteen minutes of music onto the record. The band decided to re-release the songs in an album in order to improve the sound. They took a similar, unreleased EP called Buster & Glen and made it into side two of the new album. DUCK STAB! / Buster & Glen was released the following November, and was later renamed as simply DUCK STAB. The album was a big critical success thanks to the accessibility of the music and the clever, Lewis Carroll-flavored lyrics (not to mention Snakefinger's amazing guitar work).

METAL, MEAT & BONE The Residents released a new double disc recording, METAL, MEAT & BONE, based on newly discovered recordings of Alvin Snow (a.k.a. Dyin' Dog). METAL, MEAT & BONE features 10 Dyin' Dog Demos, 10 interpretations of the demos by The Residents, and six new works inspired by Dyin' Dog. Black Francis of the Pixies is featured on the track "DIE! DIE! DIE!". Rolling Stone premiered the music video for "DIE! DIE! DIE!", which can be viewed HERE .

Triple Trouble : Written and directed by Homer Flynn and The Residents and produced by Starr Sutherland, Triple Trouble premiered at the Chicago Underground Film Festival 2022 and went on to appear at the 45th Mill Valley Film Festival as well as other renowned festivals. Triple Trouble takes place in the near future, following the death of Randy Rose, former lead singer of The Residents. His son Randy Juniordiscovers that his father's ashes have been stolen and listed for sale on eBay by a mysterious culprit. While investigating, Junior discovers the footage for the group's unfinished feature film, Vileness Fats, in a foot locker in his mother's basement. Vileness Fats was left uncompleted following its initial filming in the 1970s -- and never released due to its format on half inch "industrial" video tape. The Residents resurrect Vileness Fats with a rewritten screenplay for Triple Trouble and feature an all-star cast of independent actors including Dustin York, Gerri Lawlor, Isabelle Ellingson, and Isabelle Barbier.

Triple Trouble Synopsis : A former priest who lost faith in the church, Randall "Junior" Rose has become a plumber and instead of the simple life he envisioned, Junior's new occupation reveals an unexpected danger: a foreign fungus plugging sinks all over the city. Convinced that the fungus is a threat to humanity, Junior records a series of reports detailing the emergence of the strange white growth. Accompanied by his only companion Cherry, an AI enhanced drone, the plumber slowly gathers evidence to support his bizarre theory: an epidemic of white vans, a repeated pattern of black and white sidewalk drawings, a pervasive communications tower, and a massive increase in stopped-up drains. He's further provoked by news of a "white flu" infiltrating the culture.

The death of his mother and a recent divorce have left Junior emotionally isolated, a victim of his own deeply rooted anxiety, but despite the cautions received from Cherry and Suzi, his ex-wife, his obsession continues to swell at an alarming rate. Encouraged by the ghost of his father, Junior spirals out of control while being plagued by a mysterious figure menacing the edges of his solitary world. Panic-stricken, the plumber retreats to his apartment and begins to drink.

Drunk and unhinged, Junior staggers around his apartment, neurotically craving the company of his dead mother. Desperate for a breath of fresh air, he opens his patio door just as an ominous figure bursts in. It's Al Gump, the former custodian of the crematory where Junior's father was incinerated. Five years earlier, Gump and his brother Ollie had kidnapped his ex-wife Suzi; in the ensuing aftermath, Junior's mom shot and killed Ollie and the raging Al is demanding revenge. But with the brute's fingers tightening around the hapless plumber's neck, Gump suddenly gurgles, snorts, and lurches around the room, falling to the floor with a massive thud as a foamy white substance ripples and oozes from his mouth.

Staring in amazement, Junior can utter but one word, "FUNGUS!."

About The Residents The Residents (band, writers, artists; they/them) are an American art collective best known for creating avant-garde music and multimedia works. Since their first official release, Santa Dog (1972), the group has released over sixty albums, numerous music videos and short films, three CD-ROM projects, and ten DVDs. They have undertaken ten major tours and scored multiple films. Pioneers in exploring the potential of CD-ROM and similar technologies, the Residents have won several awards for their multimedia projects. Ralph Records, a record label focusing on avant-garde music, was started by the band. Throughout the group's existence, the individual members have ostensibly attempted to operate under anonymity, preferring instead to have attention focused on their art output. Much outside speculation and rumor has focused on this aspect of the group. In public, the group appears silent and costumed, often wearing eyeball helmets, top hats and tails -- a long-lasting costume now recognized as its signature iconography. Its albums generally fall into two categories: deconstructions of Western popular music, and complex conceptual pieces composed around a theme, theory, or plot. The group is noted for surrealistic lyrics and sound, disregard for conventional music composition, and the over-the-top theatrical spectacle of their live performances. In addition to their groundbreaking work in the areas of trance, world fusion, electronica, punk, industrial and lounge music, the group has also been credited with being among the originators of performance art and music video. Two of their videos are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and their Freak Show CD- ROM has recently been featured in MoMA's "Looking at Music 3.0" exhibition. The Theory of Obscurity, a documentary about The Residents, premiered at SXSW in 2015.

In January, 2020, resurrecting their widely acclaimed 1988 album, God in 3 Persons, The Residents, in collaboration with noted video artist John Sanborn, created a major multimedia performance at the Museum of Modern Art. In addition, based on the newly discovered recordings of Alvin Snow, aka Dyin' Dog, the group completed their 49th studio album, METAL, MEAT & BONE. In August, 2021, featuring the music of Snow, The Residents performed select concerts revisiting The Third Reich 'n' Roll and Duck Stab, two quintessential Residents albums. In winter/spring 2023, The Residents embark on their FACELESS FOREVER 50th Anniversary Tour throughout Europe and North America. residents.com

Triple Trouble , the long-awaited first feature film from The Residents, San Francisco’s premier underground band since 1972, is now available for screenings at festivals, theaters and clubs throughout the world. Triple Trouble tells the story of Junior Rose, a former priest who lost faith in the church and became a plumber. Accompanied by Cherry, an AI enhanced drone, the plumber slowly gathers evidence to support a bizarre theory: a fungus plugging sinks all over the city is a threat to humanity. Emotionally isolated after a divorce and the death of this mother, the former priest’s obsession swells at an alarming rate as his world slowly spirals out of control.

Long considered to be one of the originators of music videos, The Residents’ reputation also extends into experimental music, performance art, soundtrack music and episodic internet series. Having somehow survived for fifty years, the group is thrilled to finally produce its first feature film…

The North American trek kicks off in Portland, Oregon on March 16th and hits 22 cities including Chicago, New York, and New Orleans. Kuznetski Most area in Moscow

Kuznetski Most is a small area between Tverskaya street, Kremlin, and Kitai Gorod (Lubyanka) and it's a downtown of Moscow. First of all, 'Kuznya' is a great place to walk: it is a real Moscow area, not a postcard at all, hectic busy streets neighbour tranquil lanes and courtyards with traditional architecture. There are also many very nice cafes, restaurants, clubs, and shops. If you want a cool place to meet people, go for a walk and to get the real feeling of the city, check out this area.

Kuznetsky Most area - photo by Sergey Rodovichenkov @FlickR

Long time ago there were only half-broken low wooden houses in Kuznetski Most area, and it was the place where poor blacksmithes lived. Blacksmith is 'Kuznets' in Russia, hence the name. In the beginning of the street (on top) there was a bridge over a small river, later this river was put underground, so there's no bridge anymore. About 200 years ago there was a rich Moscovitan noble buying this area. He immediately put away all the blacksmiths' houses and started to build a fancy new district. Just in few years he built up beautiful houses, with impressive ornaments, rich decoration, pools in the courtyards. Also, he opened some French boutiques in the area. That's when Kuznetski Most started to become fashionable. In a short time all the elite moved to this  area, and those who wasn't so fast were coming here to make some shopping and to sit in many of the restaurants and cafes around.  In the 20th century, when the communist times arrived, most of the buildings were given to government offices, some were given to soviet shops. The area became boring, the architecture was slowly deteriorating , but nobody seemed to care. In the beginning of the 90s  the area was revived again: the buildings were  restored , there was many new cafes being opened, boutiques, and shops. One important landmark of Kuznetsky Most is that it's home to FSB (Federal Security Bureau - former KGB) offices, and if you walk along Kuznetsky Most street you can get to the FSB reception, which is open 24 hours (in case you have something to report).

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

the residents faceless forever tour

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

the residents faceless forever tour

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

the residents faceless forever tour

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

the residents faceless forever tour

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

the residents faceless forever tour

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

the residents faceless forever tour

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

the residents faceless forever tour

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

the residents faceless forever tour

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

the residents faceless forever tour

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

the residents faceless forever tour

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

the residents faceless forever tour

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

the residents faceless forever tour

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

the residents faceless forever tour

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

the residents faceless forever tour

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

the residents faceless forever tour

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
